Design guidance for stainless steel structures has become more comprehensive and widely available in recent years. This, coupled with a growing range of structural products and increasing emphasis being placed on sustainable and durable infrastructure, has resulted in greater use of stainless steel in construction. A recent addition to the range of structural stainless steel products is that of laser-welded sections. Owing to the high precision and low heat input of the fabrication process, the resulting sections have smaller heat affected zones, lower thermal distortions and lower residual stresses than would typically arise from traditional welding processes. There currently exists very limited experimental data on laser-welded stainless steel members and their design is not covered by current design standards. The focus of this study is therefore to investigate the cross-sectional behaviour of laser-welded stainless steel I-sections in bending. The present paper describes a series of laboratory tests performed on laser-welded stainless steel I-sections, including tensile coupon tests, initial geometric imperfection measurements and in-plane bending tests. Results of the bending tests are used to validate finite element (FE) models, which are subsequently employed for parametric investigations. The obtained experimental and FE results are used to assess the applicability of the existing design provisions of EN 1993-1-4, AISC Design Guide 27 and the continuous strength method (CSM) to laser-welded stainless steel sections. It was found that the scope of application of these existing design provisions may be safely extended to laser-welded sections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The general organization of the male genital system, the spermatogenesis and the sperm structure of the proturan Acerella muscorum have been described. At the apex of testis apical huge cells are present; their cytoplasm contains a conventional centriole, a large amount of dense material and several less electron-dense masses surrounded by mitochondria. Spermatocytes have normal centrioles and are interconnected by cytoplasmic bridges. Such bridges seem to be absent between spermatid cells and justify the lack of synchronization of cell maturation. Spermatids are almost globular cells with a spheroidal nucleus and a large mass of dense material corresponding to the centriole adjunct. Within this mass a centriole is preserved. Mitochondria of normal structure are located between the nucleus and the plasma membrane. The spermatids are surrounded by a thick membrane. No flagellar structure is formed. Sperm have a compact spheroidal nucleus, a large cap of centriole adjunct material within which a centriole is still visible. A layer of mitochondria is located over the nucleus. The cytoplasm is reduced in comparison to spermatids; many dense bodies are interspersed with sperm in the testicular lumen. The sperm are small, immotile cells of about 2.5–3μm in diameter. Electrical tests have been used to characterize the microstructure of porous materials, the measured electrical response being determined by the contribution of the microstructure (porosity and tortuosity) and the electrical properties of the solution (conductivity of the pore solution) inside the pores of the material. This study has shown how differences in concentration between the pore solution (i.e., the solution in the pores) and the storage solution surrounding the test specimen leads to significant transport (leaching) of the conductive ionic species between the pore solution and the storage solution. Leaching influences the resistivity of the pore solution, thereby influencing electrical measurements on the bulk material from either a surface or uniaxial bulk resistance test. This paper has three main conclusions: 1.) Leaching of conductive species does occur with concentration gradients and that a diffusion based approach can be used to estimate the time scale associated with this change. 2.) Leaching of ions in the pore solution can influence resistivity measurements, and the ratio of surface to uniaxial resistivity can be used as a method to assess the presence of leaching and 3.) Recent developments in proton conducting oxides (PCOs) present a promise of economic and sustainable energy conversion and storage devices such as protonic ceramic fuel cells, protonic ceramic electrolysis cells, gas purification, syn-gas membrane, and ammonia synthesis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development and recent trends in electrochemical cells based on the PCOs. Various protonic electrochemical cells are described here with basic working principles and critical parameters affecting the performance. Also, the electrochemical properties and recent progress on the PCO materials are reviewed and discussed. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in diabetes and obesity but few have clinically significant liver fibrosis. Improved risk-assessment is needed as the commonly used clinical-risk algorithm, the NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS), is often inconclusive. Aims To determine whether circulating fibroblast activation protein (cFAP), which is elevated in cirrhosis, has value in excluding significant fibrosis, particularly combined with NFS. Methods cFAP was measured in 106 with type 2 diabetes who had transient elastography (Cohort 1) and 146 with morbid obesity who had liver biopsy (Cohort 2). Results In Cohort 1, cFAP (per SD) independently associated with median liver stiffness (LSM) ≥10.3 kPa with OR of 2.0 (95% CI 1.2–3.4), p = 0.006. There was 0.12 OR (95% CI 0.03–0.61) of LSM ≥ 10.3 kPa for those in the lowest compared with the highest FAP tertile ( p = 0.010). FAP levels below 730 pmol AMC/min/mL had 95% NPV for LSM ≥ 10.3 kPa and reclassified 41% of 64 subjects from NFS ‘indeterminate-risk’ to ‘low-risk’. In Cohort 2, cFAP (per SD), associated with 1.7 fold (95% CI 1.1–2.8) increased odds of significant fibrosis ( F ≥ 2), p = 0.021, and low cFAP reclassified 49% of 73 subjects from ‘indeterminate-risk’ to ‘low-risk’. Conclusions Lower cFAP, when combined with NFS, may have clinical utility in excluding significant fibrosis in diabetes and obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wearable electronic devices have received increasing interests because of their excellent flexibility, stretchability, and human friendliness. As the core components, flexible strain sensors integrated with wide working range, high sensitivity, and environment stability, especially in moisture or corrosive environments, remain a huge challenge. Herein, synergistic carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) dual conductive layer decorated elastic rubber band (RB) was successfully developed and treated with hydrophobic fumed silica (Hf-SiO
2 ) for preparing superhydrophobic strain sensor. As expected, stable entangled CNTs layer and ultrasensitive microcracked rGO layer endow the sensor with extremely low detection limit (0.1%), high sensitivity (gauge factor is 685.3 at 482% strain), wide workable strain range (0-482%), fast response/recovery (200 ms/200 ms) and favorable reliability and reproducibility over 1000 cycles. Besides, the constructed Hf-SiO2 coating also makes the sensor exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning property, and corrosion-resistance. As a proof of concept, our prepared high-performance strain sensor can realize the full-range monitoring of human motions and physiological signals even in the water environment, including pulse, vocalization, joint bending, running, and gesture recognition. Interestingly, it can also be knitted into a tactile electronic textile for spatial pressure distribution measurement. With the rapid development of wearable intelligent devices, low-cost wearable strain sensors with high sensitivity and low detection limit are urgently demanded. Meanwhile, sensing stability of sensor in wet or corrosive environments should also be considered in practical applications. Here, superhydrophobic microcracked conductive paper-based strain sensor was fabricated by coating conductive Ti
3 C2 Tx MXene on printing paper via dip-coating process and followed by depositing superhydrophobic candle soot layer on its surface. Owing to the ultrasensitive microcrack structure in the conductive coating layer induced by the mismatch of elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient between conductive coating layer and paper substrate during the drying process, the prepared paper-based strain sensor exhibited a high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 17.4) in the strain range of 0-0.6%, ultralow detection limit (0.1% strain) and good fatigue resistance over 1000 cycles towards bending deformation. Interestingly, it was also applicable for torsion deformation detection, showing excellent torsion angle dependent, repeatable and stable sensing performances. Meanwhile, it displayed brilliant waterproof, self-cleaning and corrosion-resistant properties due to the existence of micro/nano-structured and the low surface energy candle soot layer. As a result, the prepared paper-based strain sensor can effectively monitor a series of large-scale and small-scale human motions even under water environment, showing the great promising in practical harsh outdoor environments. Importantly, it also demonstrated good applicability for spatial strain distribution detection of skin upon body movement when assembled into electronic-skin (E-skin).
