Abstract

Abstract: FLUKA is a Monte-Carlo code able to simulate interaction and transport of hadrons, heavy ions and electromagnetic particles from few keV (or thermal neutron) to cosmic ray energies in whichever material. The highest priority in the design and development of the code has always been the implementation and improvement of sound and modern physical models. A summary of the FLUKA physical models is given, while recent developments are described in detail: among the others, extensions of the intermediate energy hadronic interaction generator, refinements in photon cross sections and interaction models, analytical on-line evolution of radio-activation and remnant dose. In particular, new developments in the nucleus–nucleus interaction models are discussed. Comparisons with experimental data and examples of applications of relevance for space radiation are also provided. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The East Area at CERN's Proton Synchrotron delivers since over 56 years primary proton and ion beams as well as mixed secondary beams of hadrons, electrons and muons in a range of 0.5 GeV/c to 12 GeV/c. The CERN Management approved in 2016 a full renovation of this intensively used facility. It includes a new flexible beam design to meet todays physics requirements, which concern R&D detector tests, samples analyses under high flux irradiation or physics studies (like the CLOUD experiment). This will result in the ability to run with highly pure electron, hadron or muon beams. The upgrade of the East Area also improves energy consumption with a pulsed powering scheme with new laminated magnets and energy recovering power converters that will reduce both power and cooling requirements. Abstract

Abstract CERN CHARM facility provides a unique complex radiation environment characterized by particle energy spectra representative of high-energy accelerators, ground and atmospheric conditions and space applications. CHARM is conceived to be an irradiation facility for the qualification of large electronic systems and components in a mixed field radiation environment generated from the interaction of a 24 GeV/c proton beam with a copper or aluminium target. A movable shielding made of layers of concrete and iron allows changing the hardness and the particle population (neutron, proton, kaon, pion, muon, electron, positron, and photon) in predefined test locations. To ensure a full representativeness and reproducibility of the tests, an accurate dosimetry of the complex mixed irradiation field is mandatory. The significant size of the available test area, the multiple facility configurations as well as the strong radiation gradient present in some of the test locations make the radiation monitoring a challenge. This work provides a first characterization of the absorbed dose gradient in two specific test locations: T0, a high dose rate test location close the target revolver; R11, a standard test location for irradiation tests on electronics equipment and devices. Experimental measurements conducted with RPL dosimeters and pMOS RadFET sensors were coupled with FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation. The concluding comparison shows an overall good agreement, considering the strong dose gradient and the limitation of the dosimeters in the mixed field environment. Abstract

All Programmable System-on-Chip (APSoC) devices are designed to provide higher overall programmable flexibility and system performance at lower costs. Such characteristics make APSoCs very suitable and attractive for critical environments, such as the one encountered in the accelerators chain of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), where electronic components can be exposed to high-energy hadrons (protons, neutrons, pions), heavy ions, and other particles, at the same time. However, APSoCs may be prone to experience Single Event Effects (SEE). We investigate how the configuration of the Processing System (PS) influences the reliability of a FLASH-based APSoC. We experimentally study the differences in the radiation-induced error rate of the PS, under various configurations while executing an application. We also propose two approaches for increasing the reliability of programs running on the embedded processor. Furthermore, we analyze the sensitivity of the system taking into account not only the cross section, but also the system reliability and the Mean Workload Between Failures (MWBF). Preliminary results show that it is possible to double the performance and to increase the system reliability up to one order of magnitude by managing processor features such as cache memory usage, error correcting codes, and processor exception handlers. Abstract

Abstract: The neutron sensitivity of the C6D6 detector setup used at n_TOF facility for capture measurements has been studied by means of detailed GEANT4 simulations. A realistic software replica of the entire n_TOF experimental hall, including the neutron beam line, sample, detector supports and the walls of the experimental area has been implemented in the simulations. The simulations have been analyzed in the same manner as experimental data, in particular by applying the Pulse Height Weighting Technique. The simulations have been validated against a measurement of the neutron background performed with a natC sample, showing an excellent agreement above 1keV. At lower energies, an additional component in the measured natC yield has been discovered, which prevents the use of natC data for neutron background estimates at neutron energies below a few hundred eV. The origin and time structure of the neutron background have been derived from the simulations. Examples of the neutron background for two different samples are demonstrating the important role of accurate simulations of the neutron background in capture cross-section measurements. Abstract: At the n_TOF experiment at CERN a dedicated single-crystal chemical vapor deposition (sCVD) Diamond Mosaic-Detector has been developed for (n, ) cross-section measurements. The detector, characterized by an excellent time and energy resolution, consists of an array of 9 sCVD diamond diodes. The detector has been characterized and a cross-section measurement has been performed for the 59Ni(n, )56Fe reaction in 2012.
