Pressure ulcers are a significant health problem that affects a large population, especially the elderly and individuals with physical limitations. These injuries cause pain, are difficult to heal, and can be expensive to manage, leading to a negative impact on the quality of life of those affected. This scientific paper provides an overview of medical devices such as support surfaces, dressings, and topical agents for preventing and managing pressure ulcers. This review focuses on the importance of understanding the viscoelastic mechanical properties, water vapor transmission rate, and biocompatibility testing of medical devices, which can help define performance criteria needed to prevent and manage pressure ulcers effectively. The paper highlights the potential use of alginate, polyurethane, silicone, polyvinyl alcohol, and collagen as pressure relief and wound care solutions. This study aimed to detect the biocompatibility of bioactivated polycaprolactone/silk fibroin-based nanofibers in vivo using zebrafish embryos. Anti-Bisphenol A (BPA) antibody or lactase enzyme was immobilized on electrospun nanofibers, for making the nanofiber bioactive. Lactase immobilized nanofiber was developed to hydrolyze lactose and produce milk with reduced lactose. Anti-BPA antibody immobilized nanofiber was developed to remove bisphenol A from liquids. To test the biocompatibility of the bioactive nanofibers, the zebrafish embryos were divided into 4 groups; control, raw nanofiber, lactase immobilized nanofiber, and anti-BPAantibody immobilized nanofiber groups. In nanofiber-based exposure groups; nanofibers were incubated separately in the embryonic development medium. Subsequently, the embryos were kept in these development mediums for 72 h post-fertilization (72 hpf) and their developmental analyzes were performed. At the end of 72 hpf, zebrafish embryos were homogenized. Lipid peroxidation and nitrite oxide levels, and superoxide dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase activities were determined to monitor the disturbance of oxidant-antioxidant balance in zebrafish embryos. Exposure to bioactive nanofibers slightly disrupted the oxidant-antioxidant balance, but this change did not affect the mortality and hatching times of the embryos. In conclusion, zebrafish embryos have been effectively used in biocompatibility testing for bioactive nanofibers suggesting that these materials are biocompatible. • This study tested the biocompatibility of bioactivated nanofibers using zebrafish embryos. • PCL/SF based nanofibers were bioactivated with lactase enzyme and anti-BPA antibody. • Exposure slightly disrupted the oxidant-antioxidant balance without affecting embryo mortality. • Bioactive nanofibers were found to be biocompatible. Human endothelial cells (ECs) were sent to the International Space Station (ISS) to determine the impact of microgravity on the formation of three-dimensional structures. For this project, an automatic experiment unit (EU) was designed allowing cell culture in space. In order to enable a safe cell culture, cell nourishment and fixation after a pre-programmed timeframe, the materials used for construction of the EUs were tested in regard to their biocompatibility. These tests revealed a high biocompatibility for all parts of the EUs, which were in contact with the cells or the medium used. Most importantly, we found polyether ether ketones for surrounding the incubation chamber, which kept cellular viability above 80% and allowed the cells to adhere as long as they were exposed to normal gravity. After assembling the EU the ECs were cultured therein, where they showed good cell viability at least for 14 days. In addition, the functionality of the automatic medium exchange, and fixation procedures were confirmed. Two days before launch, the ECs were cultured in the EUs, which were afterwards mounted on the SpaceX CRS-8 rocket. 5 and 12 days after launch the cells were fixed.
