Abstract Clinical experiences are an essential foundation of nursing education. While there have been many significant investigations into models of clinical education and student learning, how students 'make sense' of their experiences is less well investigated. Senior nursing staff in a tertiary health service partnered with nurse researchers to explore how students can learn more about practice through structured discussions with peers to promote shared understandings. The study aimed to evaluate the contributions to student learning from structured peer discussions about patient care. Exploratory observational study of the effects of learning circle discussions on individual understanding of patient care. A metropolitan health service in southeast Queensland, Australia. 72 Bachelor of Nursing students in Years 2 and 3. Students developed concept maps about patient care prior to peer discussions, and subsequently added further concepts (in another colour of text) after those discussions. Researchers' review of student generated concept maps and coded concepts indicated a five a priori ways of knowing categories: empirical, aesthetic, ethical, personal and socio-political. Descriptive analysis of categories was then conducted. Empirical knowing was high in both groups, with more concepts included in Year 3 student maps. Aesthetic knowing was relatively high in both groups. Socio-political knowing was lower than anticipated overall. Personal and ethical forms of knowing were rarely included on the concept maps. While clinical placement is valued for developing empirical and aesthetic forms of knowing, the other forms of knowing have value for patient and family care and warrant strategies to improve their further development. There is growing interest by governments, industry, students and employers in providing tertiary education students with experiences in practice settings (i.e., workplaces) and then integrating those experiences into their educational programs. Yet, the bases for organising and securing such integrations remain unclear. There are quite diverse explanatory accounts about what constitutes such integrations and, therefore, how they might be best enacted and supported within tertiary education. These accounts often differ through their privileging of particular emphases in their conceptualisations. One emphasis is on the qualities and characteristics of each physical and social setting (i.e., workplace and tertiary educational institution) and their potential contributions to students' learning, and reconciling what arises from experiences in each of these settings. Another privileges individuals as meaning makers and their reconciliation of what they experiences in these settings. Advanced here is an account that acknowledges and reconciles these two emphases. This explanatory account comprising a duality that emphasises both what each setting affords students, on the one hand, and, on the other, how learners elect to engage, construe and construct from each setting and then reconcile those experiences as directed by their interests, capacities and cognitive experience. This socio-personal explanation is supported by literature emphasising the contributions between the mediations of social and physical world, and individuals' construing and construction of them, but also the relations amongst them. Having discussed this account as a means to understand the process of integrating those experiences, some considerations of curriculum, pedagogy and epistemological factors are advanced. Abstract: Intuition has been long seen as an element of effective human performance in demanding tasks (i.e. expertise). But its form, constitutive elements and development remain subject to diverse explanations. This paper discusses these elements and explores theories and empirical evidence about what constitutes intuitive expertise, and offers an account arising from a review of these explanations. Commencing with a consideration of examples of intuition from distinct fields of working life, it uses a cognitive perspective to open up the discussion for theorizing about intuition from an information processing perspective. It evaluates the widely acknowledged theory of two systems of information processing that proposes two parallel operating systems: the rational and intuitive. This theory provides foundations for understanding experts’ abilities to act intuitively in high-performance-level activities. Research on expertise, finally, opens an educational perspective on intuition, with the progression from novice to expert being understood as an enduring and long-term learning process that inherently generates intuitive capabilities. The paper concludes by returning to and making connections with the literature on workplace and professional learning to provide insights into how individual and social learning processes support the development of intuitive expertise. Abstract: Transfer is usually cast as an educational, rather than learning, problem. Yet, seeking to adapt what individuals know from one circumstance to another is a process more helpfully associated with learning, than a hybrid one called transfer. Adaptability comprises individuals construing what they experience, then aligning and reconciling with what they know, and enacting responses. This learning process is mediated by societal and cultural contributions shaping tasks, their goals and solutions and also by individuals’ capacities and interest, as shaped by their ontogenies (i.e. socially derived life histories). Labelling this process ‘transfer’ arises from concerns about educational institutions’ key rationale: that what is learnt through them should be applicable elsewhere. However, expectations of educational provisions generating wholesale adaptable learning (i.e. transferable knowledge) are unrealistic because this learning is mediated by culturally, societally and situationally derived facts and personal factors. To moderate expectations and inform practice, transfer of knowledge needs to be understood as human thinking and acting mediated both internally (intra-psychologically) as well as inter-psychologically (from social and brute suggestions beyond the individual). Consequently, a socio-personal conception of adaptability is advanced here to illuminate this process. Through intra- as well inter-psychological mediation, it comprises individuals construing what is experienced, reconciliation with what they know and constructing new knowledge or adaptability. This paper elaborates the role and development of personal epistemologies when learning through and for work. It does this by drawing on explanatory propositions from psychology, sociology and philosophical accounts. The aim here is to go beyond conceptions of epistemological beliefs and to position personal epistemologies as being active, intentional, derived in personally particular ways through the unique set of socially derived experiences that comprise individuals’ life histories or ontogenies. In this way, they are held to be comprehensive and encompassing as a conception to explain individuals’ learning and as constructed through social experiences, albeit in person-specific ways. Given their active and constructive character, these epistemologies are placed centre stage in the dual processes of learning and remaking culturally derived practices, such as with paid work. These propositions are discussed and elaborated through a consideration of engagement and learning in forms of work that provide, respectively, relatively weak and rich forms of direct social guidance, and which require the enactment in different ways of individuals’ personal epistemologies in the conduct of and learning through paid work. Summary: Introduction: How student nurses are permitted to participate in healthcare settings during placements is central to their skill development, formation of occupational identity and retention in nursing. Novices’ participation and learning was mapped through their clinical experiences from student to graduate, as part of a multi-method longitudinal study examining nurses’ workplace learning. Methods: Twenty-nine second and third year nursing students participated in a series of interviews over a two year period. Six students, representing a cross-section of a student cohort form the basis of this case study. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically coded. Results: Four themes encapsulating the participants’ journeys through clinical situations were identified; (a) creating learning opportunities, (b) gaining independence, (c) becoming part of the team and (d) generational differences. The themes reflect the development of novice nurses and the nuances of the workplace as a learning environment. Discussion: The cases highlight the importance of supportive placements that comprise openness with opportunities, tolerance of inter-generational differences and invitations to become part of the nursing team. The challenge for nurse educators is how to best prepare students for the complexities of the social, cultural and political arena of clinical practice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

To determine the efficacy of learning circles on developing intersubjectivity and teamwork skills and determine barriers to and facilitators of, learning circles as a learning tool. Teamwork skills are vital for safe, effective nursing care and are dependent on individual team members' shared understandings or intersubjectivity. Work-based learning circles offer a potential pedagogic strategy to promote teamwork. In work-based learning circles conducted in 2018, students drew a concept map based on a clinical case and discussed an element of it with the group. Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, a cross-sectional survey of students using a student clinical experience questionnaire and a qualitative descriptive approach for interviews with clinical facilitators was conducted. Overall, 128 Bachelor of Nursing students (88.9% response) completed the survey and five facilitators (50%) attended group interviews. Students agreed that core teamwork skills were developed during their placement and clinical facilitators reported (1) student engagement in the learning circle processes; (2) learning much about students' abilities; and (3) developing subtle teaching skills to enhance discussion. Sharing experiences from different wards and clinical experiences was a platform for developing intersubjectivity. To promote intra-professional teamwork skills, conducting learning circles with students from different disciplines may further enhance intersubjectivity and is an area for further research. Abstract: This paper provides an account of the inter-psychological processes that constitute learning through work. It does this by drawing on deliberations about the relative contributions of the immediate social world (i.e., workplace setting) that individuals encounter and the personal premises for individuals’ learning. This account is realised through analyses of workers’ experiences of working and learning in both large and small enterprises. Together, these premises and their contributions are used to elaborate how learning through work proceeds as a process of relational interdependence between the affordance of the workplace and the engagement of workers. This relational process is evident in work of different kinds, from the labours of coalminers through to the entrepreneurial activities of small business operators. Instances of learning through work are elaborated through studies that identify how workplaces’ affordances—those that invite workers in particular ways to participate, access support and reward—are generated and projected. These contributions to engaging in and learning through work can be conceptualised as the immediate social contribution or experience that is shaped by cultural and situational factors and the social legacies that shape how individuals construe, engage in, and learn through those practices. It concludes by discussing issues related to both the inter-psychological process and outcomes (e.g., inter-subjectivity) arising from learning through work. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Successful preparation of newly graduated nurses (NGN) is a critical concern for the healthcare sector. This study explores the learning processes enacted in a transition program with NGNs implemented in hospitals in western Sweden. Group interviews with NGNs and ward managers were conducted, with the data analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The following themes were identified as the learning processes secured through the program: Recognizing the NGNs' role as novice practitioners, Emphasizing newly graduated nurses as learners, and Progressing towards a comprehensive nursing role. To support these learning processes, the program should provide opportunies to consolidate and reconcile NGNs' experiences as novices in healthcare environments where effective performance is crucial. If NGNs are supported in these ways, the program can make salient contributions to develop the knowledge bases of their occupational expertise. • Transitioning from undergraduate education to nursing work practice is a challenging process. • Transition programs provide formal arenas for sharing knowledge and learning across sites. • Transition programs needs to be integrated into everyday work to support novice practitioners as learners. • The everyday work environment and management influence learning processes in transition programs. • Several educational components must be addressed for development of occupational expertise. There is currently a lack of tools that focus on strengthening resilient performance of healthcare systems through learning from positive healthcare events. Such tools are needed to operationalize and translate resilience in healthcare and, thus, advance the field of patient safety by learning from both positive and negative events and outcomes. The purpose of this study is to describe the developmental process of one such tool to enable operationalization of resilient healthcare and aid future tool development. The development process featured a complex, multi-step, design through involvement of a range of different stakeholders. A combination of publicly available platforms, cross-sectional knowledge, step-by step instructions and a learning tool that engages participants in collaborative practice to facilitate discussions across stakeholders and system levels is proposed as a means to create awareness of when and what contributes to resilient performance is fundamental to understanding and improving healthcare system resilience.
