22. A multispectral UV–vis absorption technique for quantitative high-speed field-sequential imaging of fuel films and soot in combustion.

Abstract

Non-evaporated liquid fuel films are the main cause of soot formation in gasoline direct-injection engines. In this study, a UV–vis absorption technique was developed to image the fuel-film thickness after direct injection in a heated constant-flow experiment. A six-hole GDI injector sprayed fuel at 100 bar onto a transparent plate 30 mm from the nozzle. The fuel consisted of a mixture of 30% toluene / 70% isooctane (boiling points 383 and 372 K, respectively). The gas and wall temperature were 376 and 352 K, respectively, and the gas pressure 1 bar. The evaporated part of the fuel was ignited, and the ensuing combustion next to the evaporating fuel film led to soot formation. Transmission of diffused backlighting from pulsed LED illumination was imaged on an intensified high-speed CMOS camera. The UV absorbance of liquid toluene was targeted with an LED at 265 nm. However, at this wavelength, absorption by toluene vapor, scattering by the liquid, extinction by soot and soot precursors, and soot incandescence all interfere with the liquid-fuel absorbance. To estimate the contributions of scattering and soot extinction, LEDs at 310, 365, and 520 nm were added to the beam path and pulsed to coincide with consecutive frames on the high-speed camera at a frame rate of 32 kHz. A dark frame was acquired to account for soot incandescence, such that the repetition rate of the resulting 5-image sequence was 6.4 kHz. Absorption by toluene vapor was estimated with a morphological image processing developed in a previous work to separate the diffuse, moving vapor cloud from the sharp, stationary features of the fuel film. The multi-spectral approach permitted obtaining spatio-temporally resolved fuel-film thickness measurements and additional information on the soot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brady Keywords: Shyness; Loneliness; Instant messaging; Computer-mediated communication Abstract: Existing research suggests shy people may satisfy their affiliation needs through computerized forms of communication such as instant messaging (IM). Fifty-five undergraduates completed an IM use index, the shyness scale and a motives for IM use scale developed for this study. It was found that the strongest motives for IM use were to increase personal contact as opposed to gain social ease or to decrease loneliness. While a direct association between shyness and IM use intensity was not found, shyness was associated with using IM to decrease loneliness in comparison to other motives. It was concluded that shyer people have multiple motives for using IM, but that decreasing loneliness is particularly important for them. Future research could examine how IM and other computerized communications compare to face-to-face interactions between shy and non-shy people. Abstract

Objectives To describe clinical characteristics, management and outcome of individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); and to evaluate risk factors for all-cause in-hospital mortality. Methods This retrospective study from a University tertiary care hospital in northern Italy, included hospitalized adult patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 between 25 February 2020 and 25 March 2020. Results Overall, 317 individuals were enrolled. Their median age was 71 years and 67.2% were male (213/317). The most common underlying diseases were hypertension (149/317; 47.0%), cardiovascular disease (63/317; 19.9%) and diabetes (49/317; 15.5%). Common symptoms at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis included fever (285/317; 89.9%), shortness of breath (167/317; 52.7%) and dry cough (156/317; 49.2%). An ‘atypical' presentation including at least one among mental confusion, diarrhoea or nausea and vomiting was observed in 53/317 patients (16.7%). Hypokalaemia occurred in 25.8% (78/302) and 18.5% (56/303) had acute kidney injury. During hospitalization, 111/317 patients (35.0%) received non-invasive respiratory support, 65/317 (20.5%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 60/317 (18.5%) required invasive mechanical ventilation. All-cause in-hospital mortality, assessed in 275 patients, was 43.6% (120/275). On multivariable analysis, age (per-year increase OR 1.07; 95% CI 1.04–1.10; p Conclusions COVID-19 mainly affected elderly patients with predisposing conditions and caused severe illness, frequently requiring non-invasive respiratory support or ICU admission. Despite supportive care, COVID-19 remains associated with a substantial risk of all-cause in-hospital mortality.

Abstract

Four experiments conducted to explore how receivers cope in situations of unfocused suspicion show that suspicious individuals indulge in greater elaborations on the messages received than unsuspicious individuals. Results also show that suspicious individuals entertain multiple interpretations of the messages to cope with the invalid information. However, the unsuspicious individuals analyze messages within a single interpretive frame. The costs and benefits that such preparatory strategies may give rise to and its limiting conditions are discussed.

Abstract

Although in heart failure (HF) there is a strict correlation between heart and kidney, no data are available on the potential relationship in HF between renal dysfunction (RD) and the impaired sympathetic innervation. Aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between RD and cardiac sympathetic innervation in HF patients with reduced ejection fraction. Two hundred and sixty-three patients with mild-to-severe HF underwent iodine-123 meta-iodobenzylguanidine myocardial scintigraphy to assess sympathetic innervation, evaluating early and late heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratios and washout rate. In all patients, glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formula was assessed. A direct association was found between EPI-eGFR and late H/M (r = .215; P < .001). Dividing the population into moderate-to-severe eGFR reduction and normal-to-mildly reduced eGFR (cutoff ≤ 60 mL·min-1·1.73 m-2), a statistically significant reduction of late H/M value was found in patients with RD compared to patients with preserved eGFR (P = .030). By multivariable linear regression analysis, eGFR resulted in the prediction of impaired late H/M in patients with RD (P = .005). Patients with RD and HF show more impaired cardiac sympathetic activity than HF patients with preserved renal function, and reduced eGFR is a predictor of reduced late H/M. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
