Abstract

Preterm birth (PTB) increases the risk of various acute and chronic morbidities and premature mortality in children under 5 years of age. The present study examines the association between different maternal obstetric factors and PTB. In addition, this study estimates the risk of neonatal mortality among children born preterm. Retrospective two-stage stratified sample design. The weighted prevalence of PTB was estimated using data on 148,746 most recent institutional births from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4, 2015–16. The Poisson regression model was used to investigate the association between maternal obstetric factors and PTB. Using Cox's proportional hazard model, the risk of neonatal mortality among PTBs was estimated. Maternal obstetric factors, such as minimal antenatal care, delivery complications, history of previous caesarean delivery and delivery at private health facilities, were significantly associated with an increased risk of PTB. The survival probability of preterm babies sharply declined in the first week of life and thereafter was found to stabilise. The risk of mortality in the first 28 days of life increased 2.5-fold if the baby was born preterm. Optimising antenatal care was found to lower the likelihood of PTB and improve their chances of survival. Antenatal care services and delivery care practices in private facilities were strongly associated with the incidence and survival of PTB. Evaluating associations of history of caesarean births on future pregnancies can help understand their deleterious effects on PTB. Affordable, accessible and available antenatal care services, in both public and private facilities, can increase the survival rates of PTBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Self-supported and carbon/aluminum-backed isotopically enriched thin boron targets were prepared by the vapour deposition technique using electron beam. To mitigate spitting effects observed during this process, boron powder was evaporated in both paste and pellet forms. Effective reduction of spitting was achieved by initially heating boron at low currents followed by its step-wise increase. Analysis of boron samples at various stages of evaporation was done by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Direct exposure to high-energy electron beams contributed to a decrease in boron oxide and hydride compounds, thereby aiding in minimizing spitting. However, upon exposure to air, the evaporated film underwent surface oxidation, confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Further investigations into the longevity of the film (target) were conducted using optical microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. These analyses revealed hydrogenation and oxidation of the film upon exposure to atmosphere, resulting in increased fragility and noticeable colour changes over time. • The boron target was fabricated using electron beam induced vapour deposition technique. • The impact of spitting during the vapour deposition process and methods to mitigate it are discussed. • Exposure to high energy electron beam reduced the presence of boron oxide and hydride which reduces the spitting effect. Abstract

Double differential neutron fluence distributions were measured in the 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be reaction for proton beam energies 7, 9 and 12 MeV. Seven liquid scintillator based detectors were employed to measure neutron fluence distributions using the Time of Flight technique. Neutron ambient dose equivalents were determined from the measured fluence distribution using ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) recommended fluence to dose equivalent conversion coefficients. Neutron dose equivalents were also measured using a conventional B F 3 detector based REM counter. Ambient dose equivalent measured by the REM counter is found to be in agreement with that determined from the neutron fluence spectra within their uncertainties. Angular distributions of the ambient dose equivalents were also determined from the measured fluence distributions at different angles. • Measurement of neutron ambient dose from 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be reaction using thin target. • Organic scintillator detector and REM counter were used to measure the ambient neutron dose. • Neutron time of flight technique was used to measure neutron fluence distribution. Abstract

Seagrass meadows are recognized as one of the most productive ecosystems in the coastal zone supporting a wide variety of keystone and ecologically important marine species from diverse trophic levels. This paper examines existing policies and legislations that can help in the protection, conservation and threats to seagrass ecosystems. The paper i) reviews the key legislations with provisions to conserve seagrass ecosystems in India such as the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification (2011) issued under the Environment (Protection), Act 1986, the Wildlife (Protection) Act, (1972), Biodiversity Act, 2002 and the Marine Fishing Regulation Acts of different coastal states in India; ii) identifies threats to the seagrass meadows and iii) suggests measures for enhancing conservation of seagrass. Abstract

The regulatory ecosystem services in terms of carbon sequestration and storage by Indian seagrass ecosystems were coupled with their monetary values in the context of climate change mitigation in the seagrass meadows of Palk Bay and Chilika Lagoon, two major seagrass ecosystems of India. The results showed that the meadows acted as a net sink of atmospheric CO 2 ; however, they may also act as a minor source of CO 2 to the atmosphere depending on the degree of anthropogenic influence. The mean ecosystem productivity ranged between 6.31 and 11.9 kg C ha −1 d −1 , which is equivalent to the capture of 8.44 and 15.9 Mg CO 2 ha −1 year −1 . This captured carbon was apportioned primarily in sediments (129 Mg C org ha −1 in top 1 m soil), which was much higher than the carbon stored as above and below ground biomass (0.20–0.96 Mg C org ha −1 and 0.30–2.90 Mg C org ha −1 , respectively). The economic valuation of regulatory ecosystem services in the form of C sequestration by an estimated 51,700 ha of total seagrass cover in India was largely dependent on the sequestration rates and the average social cost of carbon. The estimated values ranged between $ 1.02 million and $ 3.65 million per year. In addition, monetary values of the stored carbon in live biomass of Indian seagrass systems ranged between $ 0.45 million and $ 3.89 million, whereas, in the top 1 m soil it ranged between $ 109 million and $ 146 million. Abstract

A compact and efficient beam dump shield has been designed using Monte Carlo simulation code FLUKA to facilitate low background measurement of neutron and gamma rays using K130 cyclotron at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata (VECC). Iron, lead and high density Polyethylene (HDPE) were considered in the design of the beam dump shield. Representative FLUKA simulation results have been validated using in-beam experiment performed on the same beam dump constituents. Experimental neutron and gamma-rays energy spectra have been found to be in fair agreement with the simulation results. Activation of various beam dump shield components were also carried out. Abstract

Arsenite [As(III)] is much more toxic and difficult in removal than arsenate [As(V)]. Therefore, a method for removing As(III) is more urgently needed than for As(V). The precondition for better As(III) removal is to oxidize it to As(V). This study investigates the oxidation ability of ferrate, Fe(VI), under different pH conditions, different initial concentrations of As(III) and different dosages of Fe(VI). The results show that Fe(VI) is an effective oxidizer for As(III) under basic condition. The pH value of tested water is a significant factor affecting the oxidation efficiency of As(III) by Fe(VI). Although theoretical redox analyses suggest that Fe(VI) is a better oxidizer under acidic condition, the experimental results show that basic condition is more efficient than acidic condition for As(III) oxidation by Fe(VI) due to the acid-catalyzed redox reaction between Fe(VI) and H2O. Initial As(III) concentration does not play an important role in affecting the oxidation efficiency. The results in this study also reveal that the final product of Fe(VI) is Fe(III) and the needed mole ratio of Fe(VI):As(III) for complete As(III) oxidation under basic condition is 2:3. Abstract

Abstract: Response functions of monoenergetic neutrons at various energies, corresponding to a measured neutron energy spectrum have been extracted. The experimental response functions for neutron energies in the range of have been compared with the respective GEANT4 predictions. It has been found that, there is some discrepancy between the experimental and the GEANT4 simulated neutron response functions at lower pulse height regions, which increases with the increase of neutron energy. This might be due to the incompleteness of the physics processes used in the present GEANT4 simulations. In particular, higher order reaction processes which become more significant at higher energies should be properly taken into account in the calculation of response function. Abstract

Abstract: A method that uses X-ray scanning to detect subsurface cracks is described. The method deals with samples typical of aircraft structures for which access is limited to one surface and a crack is hidden within the first substrate layer beneath the surface layer. A single-scatter model for the total response due to all X-rays that scatter once in one of the substrate layers and then pass through the top surface of the crack region and escape the target is developed. In this model, the crack is treated as a region of lower average density, and hence interaction coefficient, than the unaffected bulk material. The EGS4 Monte Carlo code also is used to estimate multiple-scattering response assuming the crack region is a thin void. These two models provide consistent results which indicate that properly designed X-ray back-scatter scanners can identify the presence of hidden cracks that extend through the substrate layer and are greater than about 1cm in length.
