Abstract Efficient hybrid materials based adsorbents are highly recommended for potentially toxic metals removal from polluted water media. Herein, novel silica particles modified with a new bispyrazolylpropane Schiff base were synthesized and characterized using relevant physical techniques. The resulting hybrid material (SiNAL3) was studied for its ability to uptake ZnII, CuII, PbII and CdII ions in aqueous solution via kinetics studies. The maximum adsorption capacities of SiNAL3 for ZnII, CuII, PbII and CdII were approximately 1.23, 0.32, 0.29 and 0.23 mmol g−1 , respectively, with an equilibrium reached after only 25 min for all metals. The adsorption process was found spontaneous and endothermic. Interestingly, our hybrid material could selectively adsorb ZnII in the presence of other metal ions from an aqueous solution, a useful property which was applied to real water samples. The adsorbent can be easily reused with no significant decrease in adsorption capacity after not less than five adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating its high stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The safety and effectiveness of hepatic transarterial embolic locoregional therapy (LRT) was assessed, including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and transarterial radioembolization (TARE), in patients who underwent portal vein embolization (PVE) before major hepatectomy in whom surgery was then contraindicated. Adverse events (AEs) were graded according to the Society of Interventional Radiology classification of AEs. Tumor response was assessed based on the Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors 1.1. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were estimated. Fifteen patients underwent 37 transarterial LRTs (25 TACEs, 11 TAREs, and 1 bland embolization), most (73%) with hepatocellular carcinoma. Eleven AEs occurred in 7 patients, including 2 Grade 3/5 (severe) and 2 Grade 4/5 (life-threatening) events. The best response was partial response in 4 (27%) and stable disease in 10 (66%) patients. The median OS and PFS were 42 (95% CI, 35–49 months) and 33 months (95% CI, 24–42 months), respectively. In conclusion, hepatic transarterial LRT can be considered as a therapeutic option in patients with contraindicated liver surgery after PVE. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New design material based on ketoenol–pyridine-immobilized silica was fabricated for quantitative removal of Zinc. Analysis of surface chemistry was evaluated using BET, BJH, EA, FT-IR, 13 C NMR, SEM and XRD. TGA was also used to certify the good chemical and thermal stability of the new surface. Adsorption studies have demonstrated the ability to highlight the surface designed for quantitative and selective removal of Zn(II) from aqueous solutions and real samples using ICP-AES. All experimental parameters that can affect the adsorption, such as kinetics, time of contact, pH, concentration and temperature of the system were studied. The adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters of Δ H° and Δ S° were positive while Δ G° was negative, and revealed that the process was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The adsorption process was found to follow a pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorption parameters showed that the material presents further improvements and has the largest capacity and highest selectivity for the effective adsorption of Zn(II) (112.5 mg of Zn(II)/g of silica) compared to others described adsorbents. The newly material was used for the extraction of metals from natural water and showed efficiency and selectivity results for Zn(II). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a registry of 250 patients treated for atrial fibrillation (160 recurrent, 90 permanent forms), we prospectively looked for associated risk factors for cerebrovascular complications. After a 4-years follow-up, 19 patients had presented a cerebral accident (13 strokes, 4 transient ischemic attacks, 2 cerebral hemorrhages). Prognostic factors for cerebrovascular complications were hypertension, valvular heart disease, and age ≥70 years. When restricting the analysis to stroke and transient ischemic attacks, prognostic factors were limited to hypertension and age ≥70 years. In conclusion, hypertension and age ≥70 years are the main independent risk factors for cerebral ischemic attacks in out-of-hospital patients treated for atrial fibrillation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
