Magnetic fiber composites combining superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and electrospun fibers have shown promise in tissue engineering fields. Controlled grafting of SPIONs to the fibers post-electrospinning generates biocompatible magnetic composites without altering desired fiber morphology. Here, for the first time, we assess the potential of SPION-grafted scaffolds combined with magnetic fields to promote neurite outgrowth by providing contact guidance from the aligned fibers and mechanical stimulation from the SPIONs in the magnetic field. Neurite outgrowth from primary rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) was assessed from explants cultured on aligned control and SPION-grafted electrospun fibers as well as on non-grafted fibers with SPIONs dispersed in the culture media. To determine the optimal magnetic field stimulation to promote neurite outgrowth, we generated a static, alternating, and linearly moving magnet and simulated the magnetic flux density at different areas of the scaffold over time. The alternating magnetic field increased neurite length by 40% on control fibers compared to a static magnetic field. Additionally, stimulation with an alternating magnetic field resulted in a 30% increase in neurite length and 62% increase in neurite area on SPION-grafted fibers compared to DRG cultured on PLLA fibers with untethered SPIONs added to the culture media. These findings demonstrate that SPION-grafted fiber composites in combination with magnetic fields are more beneficial for stimulating neurite outgrowth on electrospun fibers than dispersed SPIONs. Aligned electrospun fibers improve axonal regeneration by acting as a passive guidance cue but do not actively interact with cells, while magnetic nanoparticles can be remotely manipulated to interact with neurons and elicit neurite outgrowth. Here, for the first time, we examine the combination of magnetic fields, magnetic nanoparticles, and aligned electrospun fibers to enhance neurite outgrowth. We show an alternating magnetic field alone increases neurite outgrowth on aligned electrospun fibers. However, combining the alternating field with magnetic nanoparticle-grafted fibers does not affect neurite outgrowth compared to control fibers but improves outgrowth compared to freely dispersed magnetic nanoparticles. Study Objective: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains a frequent postoperative complication in non-fast-track surgeries, with negative implications for return to daily activities and work. In fast-track total hip and -knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) an 8-9% incidence of POCD after 3 months has been reported, but without details on specific perioperative risk factors. Thus, we re-investigated the incidence and role of suggested factors for POCD in a well-controlled patient cohort, to guide future preventive interventions.Design: A subanalysis of a prospective study.Setting: Hospital ward, patients own home.Patients: One-hundred-and-four patients undergoing elective THA/TKA.Interventions: A full contextual and validated cognitive test battery pre- and 2-3 weeks postoperatively by interview by research nurse.Measurements: Results from the cognitive test battery were corrected for learning effect by normative data from an age-matched unoperated control group. Potential perioperative risk factors (age, procedure, gender, inflammation, blood-percentage, opioids etc.) associated with POCD was investigated by univariate and multivariate logistic analysis, with a 5% significance level.Main Results: Four patients (3.9%) developed POCD. POCD-positive patients consumed higher dose of opioids in the acute postoperative period (postoperative days 0-3: median 214 mg), vs. POCD-negative patients (postoperative days 0-3: median 98 mg, p = 0.008), and during the 2-3-week study period (POCD-positive vs. POCD-negative patients, median 739 mg vs. 208 mg, respectively). Other pre and postoperative factors were non-significant but associated with the development of POCD.Conclusion: POCD is rare in fast-track THA/TKA patients and may be related to postoperative opioid consumption, supporting the ongoing focus on opioid-sparing analgesia. This review highlights recent developments in the grafting of conjugated polymers onto various substrates for organic electronic devices. The rapid development of multi-layer architectures demands the preparation of well-defined interfaces between both compatible and incompatible materials. It is promising therefore that interface-engineering is now known to help passivate charge trap states, control energy level alignments, enhance charge extraction, guide active-layer morphologies, and improve material compatibility, adhesion and device stability. In organic electronic devices, conjugated polymers are in contact with a wide range of constituents, such as metals, metal oxides, organic materials, and inorganic particles. Covalent bonds between these materials and macromolecules are desired to yield intimate contacts and well-defined interfaces. Following an overview of the various synthetic methodologies of conjugated polymers, the chemistry of tethering macromolecular chains onto nanoparticles and flat surfaces is described. Two donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymers containing dithienosilole (DTS) donor unit and unsubstituted benzothiadiazole (BT) or fluorinated benzothiadiazole (ffBT) acceptor unit, PDTSBT and PDTSffBT, were synthesized by Stille cross coupling polymerization and tested for application in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The new alternating copolymer (PDTSffBT) possesses both a low optical bandgap ( E g = 1.54 eV) and a deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy level (HOMO) (−5.46 eV). It was found that the introduction of the two electron-withdrawing fluorine atoms on the benzothiadiazole unit results in a decrease of the HOMO energy level with slight effect on the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) as observed through cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. Inclusion of fluorine atoms also leads to an increase in the interchain interaction in the PDTSffBT copolymer with respect to its analogue PDTSBT copolymer according to the X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD). When PDTSffBT:PC 71 BM blends are tested in bulk heterojunction (BHJ)-polymer solar cells, the cells display a short-circuit current ( J SC ) of 8.82 mA/cm 2 , a high open circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 0.74 V, and a Fill Factor (FF) of 45%, giving an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.93%, compared to 1.64% for the BT-containing cells prepared in parallel under identical conditions. The significant performance enhancement results from the higher V OC and J SC in the ffBT-containing cells. These results unambiguously indicate that the fluorination is an efficient method to modulate the energetic levels and improve the photovoltaic performances of the widely used benzothiadiazole-based low bandgap copolymers.
