Food and feed stocks heavily contaminated with mycotoxins are rendered unfit for consumption and therefore discarded as waste. Due to the lack of guidelines and in accordance with the prudent avoidance principle, these waste streams are often incinerated. For better valorization, these streams could be used as input for anaerobic digestion. However, the degradation of multiple mycotoxins during anaerobic digestion and their effect on the methane production is currently unknown. In batch tests spiked with mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and T-2 toxin were degraded for more than 90%. For mesophile and thermophile digestion respectively, fumonisin B1 was degraded for 70% and 85%, and most ergot alkaloids for 64% and 98%. Neither biogas production, nor methane production were influenced by the presence of the mycotoxins. Subsequently, semi-continuous reactors fed with contaminated maize resulted in more than 99% degradation for all mycotoxins after 1.8 hydraulic retention time with stable biogas production and process parameters. Abstract: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most destructive fungal diseases of small grain cereals resulting in a reduced grain yield and quality. FHB is the result of a complex interaction between weather conditions and agricultural practices including crop rotation, tillage, fungicide application and host resistance. This study deals with the results of field experiments conducted during the growing seasons 2009–2010 until 2011–2012 at Bottelare (Belgium). The experiments were set up to evaluate the influence of maize–wheat rotation on the visual symptoms of FHB and deoxynivalenol (DON) content in winter wheat. Using a randomised complete block design with four replications, we studied the impact of (a) maize variety as previous crop, (b) maize harvest method (grain or silage maize), (c) tillage method and (d) the influence of the wheat variety resistance on the FHB incidence and DON content. The experimental results showed that the susceptibility of the maize varieties for Fusarium and maize harvest method had only a minor effect on the FHB incidence and DON content of the wheat crop during the subsequent growing season. The tillage method and wheat variety resistance were more important; both factors had a significant influence on the FHB incidence and DON content. Furthermore, the quantitative effect of these factors depended on the disease pressure. The DON content reduction obtained by ploughing and by sowing moderately resistant wheat varieties was higher in case the weather conditions favoured FHB development. Furthermore, it was shown that repeated maize–wheat rotation in combination with favourable weather conditions for FHB could result in an accumulation of inoculum, which, for instance, led to DON contents up to 9.90 mg/kg in August 2012. Abstract: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating wheat disease and is influenced by weather conditions and agronomic factors. Since FHB is a mostly monocyclic disease, the quantity of primary inoculum is a key factor influencing its incidence. To investigate the connection between the primary Fusarium inoculum and the final population on wheat ears, naturally occurring populations of Fusarium avenaceum, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium poae and Microdochium nivale were studied at eight locations in Flanders, Belgium during the growing seasons of 2008–2009 and 2009–2010. To determine the composition of the primary inoculums in November, weeds, wheat and maize residues as well as soil samples were examined. At the end of the growing season, in July, the population on wheat ears was determined. In both growing seasons, the population was characterized by a large complexity and a differential composition at each location and for each type of sample. Nevertheless, some clear correspondences were observed: F. culmorum was a predominant species in crop residues and in soil samples in November, while the population on wheat ears in July consisted mainly of F. graminearum and F. poae, with only a lower frequency of F. culmorum, indicating that soil is not an important source of primary inoculum. The presence of M. nivale was restricted to weeds, crop residues and soil samples in November, and was nearly absent in July at the majority of locations. Finally, our results also indicate that the Fusarium population in July is more complex than the population at the beginning of the season in November. The information of the primary inoculum and the composition of the FHB population at the end of the growing season is important to predict FHB incidence and to implement control strategies for FHB. Abstract: This paper presents a fully documented case of a mass murder. The offender willingly underwent a psychological assessment and discussed his motivation and subjective experience of the slaying. The researchers also had access to the official records maintained by criminal justice entities. The data thus were gathered from both interviews with the offender and a review of the official record. The diagnosed borderline personality disorder was coherent with the offender''s pervasive feelings of loneliness, the lack of availability of the attachment figure in childhood and the clinical depression during the incubation phase of the murders. The ruminations about revenge appeared to be compulsive and ego-dystonic, which is in line with what has emerged as the goal of predatory violence, namely relief. The crime also grew out of the offender''s perception of himself as a powerless victim of a malevolent world and his systematic rejection of responsibility. The mild psychopathic dimension that was found may characterize the anxious, secondary psychopath. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The current study sought to examine differences in personality-related characteristics between restricting anorexia nervosa (RAN), binging/purging anorexia (BPAN), and purging bulimia nervosa (BN) patients. Scores on the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and on the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ) were compared for 166 RAN, 78 BPAN, and 151 BN patients. Bingers/purgers showed a higher score for restrained, external and emotional eating and a lower score for a subscale of "self-directedness" compared to patients who never binge and purge. Personality differences were most marked between RAN and BN patients, while personality char acteristics of BPAN patients tended to be similar to those of BN patients. BN patients showed higher scores on "novelty seeking" and the subscales "exploratory excitability," "impulsivity," and "extravagance," and lower scores on "self-directedness," compared to restricting patients. Moreover RAN patients also showed higher scores on subscales of character dimensions, compared to BN patients. The higher the scores on novelty seeking, the lower the scores on several character scales, which has important implications for the reinforcement of behavior and the treatment of eating disorders. Knowledge on the presence of mycotoxins in Africa is fragmentary, although it can be assumed that both concentrations and prevalence in food commodities is high. The present study focuses on the presence of Fusarium species and their associated mycotoxins in maize from two geographically distant agro ecological systems in Tanzania. In a two-year survey, both Fusarium species and concomitant mycotoxins were surveyed in the Northern highlands (Hanang district) and the Eastern lowlands (Kilosa district). Parallel with this, a questionnaire on agricultural practices in both agro-ecosystems was included in this study. This allowed us to put the presence of the toxigenic Fusarium species and their mycotoxins within a relevant agricultural framework. Fusarium verticillioides , Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium poae were the predominant species in both locations although the population in the Eastern lowlands was slightly more complex comprising also Fusarium culmorum , Fusarium avenaceum and Fusarium sporotrichioides . The predominant presence of F. verticillioides resulted in a high prevalence of fumonisins in both regions. The importance of F. graminearum in the population was reflected by the presence of deoxynivalenol in the mycotoxin analysis. Although the agricultural practices differed significantly amongst both locations, only few significant correlations were detected between mycotoxin presence and crop rotation, storage conditions, and insect control measures. Abstract: Suicidality is a major challenge for today''s health care. Evidence suggests that there are differences in cognitive functioning of suicidal patients but the knowledge about the underlying neurobiology is limited. Brain imaging offers the advantage of a non-invasive in vivo direct estimation of detailed brain structure, regional brain functioning and estimation of molecular processes in the brain. We have reviewed the literature on neuroimaging studies of the suicidal brain. This article contains studies on structural imaging such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and functional imaging, consisting of Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT) and functional MRI (fMRI). We classified the results of the different imaging modalities in structural and functional imaging. Within our research, we found no significant differences in the suicidal brain demonstrated by Computed Tomography. Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies in subjects with a history of suicide attempt on the other hand deliver differing results, mostly pointing at a higher prevalence of white (especially deep white matter and periventricular) and grey matter hyperintensities in the frontal, temporal and/or parietal lobe and decreased volumes in the frontal and temporal lobe. There seems to be a trend towards findings of reduced grey matter volume in the frontal lobe. Overall, there is no consensus of opinion on structural imaging of the suicidal brain. Research on functional imaging is further divided into studies in resting state, studies in activation conditions and studies on brain neurotransmitters, transporters and receptors. A common finding in functional neuroimaging in resting conditions is a decreased perfusion in the prefrontal cortex of suicidal patients. During cognitive activation, perfusion deficits in the prefrontal cortex have been observed. After fenfluramine challenge, the prefrontal cortex metabolism seems to be inversely correlated to the lethality of previous suicide attempt. The few studies that examined the serotonin transporter in suicide found no significant differences in binding potential. In suicide attempters there seems to be a negative correlation between impulsivity and SERT binding. Our group found a reduced 5-HT2A binding in the frontal cortex in patients with a recent suicide attempt. The binding index was significantly lower in the deliberate self injury patients compared to the deliberate self poisoning patients. The few authors that examined DAT binding in suicide found no significant DAT differences between patients and controls. However they demonstrated significant negative correlations between DAT binding potential and mental energy among suicide attempters, but not in healthy control subjects. We did not find studies measuring the binding potential of the noradrenalin or gamma amino butyric acid transporter or receptor in suicidal subjects. Several reports have suggested abnormalities of GABA neurotransmission in depression. During our literature search, we have focused on neuroimaging studies in suicidal populations, but in the absence of evidence in the literature on this group or when further collateral evidence is appropriate, this overview expands to results in impulsive aggressive or in depressed subjects. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed as a treatment for several neuropsychiatric disorders in human beings, but the neurobiological effects of rTMS in dogs have not been investigated to date. A proof of concept study was designed to evaluate the effect of rTMS on cerebral perfusion, measured with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), in dogs. An accelerated high frequency (aHF)-rTMS (20 Hz) protocol was applied to the canine left frontal cortex. To accurately target this area, eight dogs underwent a 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan before stimulation. The left frontal cortex was subjected to five consecutive aHF-rTMS sessions with a figure-of-eight coil designed for human beings at an intensity of 110% of the motor threshold. The dogs underwent 99m Tc-d,1 hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO) SPECT scans 1 week prior to and 1 day after the stimulations. Perfusion indices (PIs) were determined semi-quantitatively; aHF-rTMS resulted in significantly increased PIs in the left frontal cortex and the subcortical region, whereas no significant differences were noted for the other regions. Behaviour was not influenced by the stimulation sessions. As has been observed in human beings, aHF-rTMS applied to the left frontal cortex alters regional cerebral perfusion in dogs. The recent focus on extending risk assessment and treatment in forensic mental health with protective factors relates to the increasing interest in strengths-based approaches in various professional disciplines: law (e.g. human rights), criminology (e.g. desistance), mental health care (e.g. recovery), forensic psychology (e.g. the Good Lives Model), special needs education (e.g. Quality of Life) and family studies (e.g. family recovery). In this article, we will discuss the available knowledge with regard to strengths-based approaches for offenders with mental illness, in relation to these different disciplines. Several dilemmas are observed across these disciplines: (1) “Living apart together”: the integration of different disciplines; (2) “Beyond Babylonian confusion and towards more theoretical research”: conceptualization of strengths-based practices in different fields; (3) “No agency without autonomy”: the individual in context; and (4) “Risks, strengths and capabilities”: the search for an integrated paradigm. In our view, these different disciplines share a shift in how humankind is viewed, respecting agency in the interaction with people who have offended. Yet, differences apply to the objectives that the disciplines strive for, which warrants not to eclectically consider strengths-based working in each of the disciplines as ‘being small variations of the same theme’. Information on the presence of ochratoxin A (OTA) in local Ethiopian coffee is scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to type the fungal and mycotoxin contamination levels in Ethiopian coffee consumed by the local community. Coffee samples were collected from six major coffee growing districts in Jimma zone of Oromiya regional state in Ethiopia. Total fungal incidence mounted up to 87% and Aspergillus (79%), Fusarium (8%) and Penicillium (5%) were the predominant toxigenic genera. OTA producing species A. westerdijkiae , Aspergillus ochraceus , and Aspergillus steynii were identified for the first time in Ethiopia and were shown to be the predominant species while aflatoxin (AF) producing Aspergillus species were scarce. Using an in vitro approach, the OTA production potential was assessed under standardized conditions. Based on this experiment, it was concluded that Aspergillus westerdijkiae isolates were clearly the most potent producers of OTA. The median OTA level in the locally sold Ethiopian coffee was 1.53 μg/kg. Notwithstanding this low median value, significant differences in fungal and toxin incidences were observed between the different coffee processing types, coffee sample types, and storage characteristics. Brain perfusion can be investigated using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and the intravenous injection of 99mtechnetium ethyl cysteinate dimer (99mTC-ECD). However, sedation using medetomidine, an α2-agonist, or anaesthesia using medetomidine and ketamine, an N-methyl-o-aspar-tate-(NMDA)-antagonist, may be required for SPECT studies in cats but can affect the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). The effects of medetomidine, with or without ketamine, on regional brain perfusion were therefore investigated in six cats under three conditions. Injection of tracer occurred before sedation or anaesthesia (condition A), following intramuscular (IM) sedation with medetomidine (condition M) or after IM anaesthesia with medetomidine and ketamine (condition MK). Medetomidine and medetomidine with ketamine caused a significantly higher total tracer uptake in all brain regions. Semi-quantification of brain perfusion gave lower perfusion indices in several sub-cortical regions in conditions M and MK, compared to A. Left-right differences were observed in the temporal cortex (A), the temporal, parietal cortex and the thalamus (M) and the frontal cortex (MK). A significantly higher perfusion index in the sub-cortical regions, compared to the whole cortex, was only present in condition A. Abstract: Sedatives and anaesthetics are known to cause changes in the regional cerebral blood flow. In dogs intramuscular sedation with medetomidine, a potent sedative frequently used in veterinary medicine, is sometimes indicated prior to intravenous injection of 99mTechnetium-Ethyl Cysteinate Dimer (99mTc-ECD) in brain perfusion studies using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). Based on the knowledge of the distribution of alpha2-receptors in the brain, we hypothesized altered regional brain perfusion in dogs receiving medetomidine prior to 99mTc-ECD. Two conditions were compared in 10 dogs; tracer injection before and after intramuscular sedation with medetomidine. In our study, medetomidine caused a significantly higher tracer uptake in all brain regions. Semi-quantification of brain perfusion rendered a lower perfusion index in the subcortical region and an imbalance between left and right cortical perfusion induced by medetomidine. Abstract: Due to its different mix composition (e.g. use of superplasticizer, lower water/powder ratio (W/P) and higher paste volume) and its denser microstructure, different mechanisms and magnitudes concerning the time-dependent deformability, i.e. shrinkage and creep, hold for limestone powder type self-compacting concrete (SCC). For this reason, experimental investigations concerning the shrinkage and creep behaviour of 7 limestone powder type SCC mixtures and 1 reference, traditionally vibrated, concrete mixture (TC1) are performed. The water/cement ratio (W/C), cement/powder ratio (C/P), aggregate type and cement type are studied. The experimental data have been used to verify the accuracy of the CEB-FIP Model Code 1990 (MC-90) in terms of long-term deformations. Test results revealed generally higher shrinkage and creep deformations for the SCC mixtures compared with the TC1 mix. However, whereas the shrinkage deformations are underestimated by MC-90 the creep and overall behaviour of the limestone powder type SCC mixtures are rather well predicted by the same model. In order to properly predict the time-dependent behaviour of limestone powder type SCC in cases of concrete structures (highly) sensitive to shrinkage and creep, a modification of the MC-90 in terms of the total shrinkage strain prediction is proposed by the authors. Serotonin (5-HT) and more specifically the 5-HT2A receptor is involved in cognitive and non-cognitive behavior and plays an important role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The objective was to assess the 5-HT2A binding potential (BP) in healthy volunteers and AD with SPECT and 123I-5-I-R91150, a selective radio-iodinated 5-HT2A receptor antagonist. Twenty-six controls and nine AD patients were included. A semiquantitive analysis with normalization on cerebellar uptake provided estimates of BP for 26 cortical regions of interest. An age-related decline of neocortical BP was found (11.6% per decade). Compared to age-matched controls, a generally decreased neocortical BP in AD was found with a significant regional reduction in the orbitofrontal, prefrontal, lateral frontal, cingulate, sensorimotor, parietal inferior, and occipital region. These results are in line with previous postmortem, in vitro, and PET findings. The age-related decline highlights the necessity for matched advanced age study samples. The fact that the 5-HT2A receptor is differentially affected in AD patients has implications for both the etiological basis and therapeutic management of AD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
