37. Enhancement of blowout limit in a Mach 2.92 cavity-based scramjet combustor by a gliding arc discharge.

Abstract

Plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) has shown excellent performance in the ignition and combustion enhancement of scramjet combustors. A multi-channel gliding arc (MCGA) plasma placed on the sidewall surface of a scramjet combustor was employed to enhance combustion near the flame blowout limit (BL) in a C 2 H 4 -fueled and cavity-based model scramjet combustor. Wall static pressure measurements, simultaneous 10 kHz CH* chemiluminescence imaging from the top and side views, optical emission spectroscopy, and discharge waveform measurements were used to elucidate the combustion physics throughout the PAC events. For the current cavity configuration and fueling condition, a general estimate of the flame BL in a rich-fuel environment was provided, in which a fuel flow rate (FFR) was 7.5 g/s. Once the FFR was exceeded, the flame was unstable and blown out, whereas the MCGA plasma demonstrated an excellent flame stabilization ability. The flame BL of the scramjet combustor in the presence of the MCGA plasma has an increase of ∼29%. Two PAC processes, including enhancement mode and re-ignition mode, were distinguished to play a vital role in extending the flame BL. The two PAC processes showed that the spark-type discharge generated by the MCGA could ignite the local fuel-rich mixture and increase the flame BL. The local ignition is dominated by the continuous accumulation of the massive flame kernels with the local fuel-rich mixture, as well as more heat and species exchanges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the mental health and well-being of medical personnel, including nursing students. Network analysis provides a deeper characterization of symptom-symptom interactions in mental disorders. The aim of this study was to elucidate characteristics of anxiety and depressive symptom networks of Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: A total of 932 nursing students were included. Anxiety and depressive symptom were measured using the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), respectively. Central symptoms and bridge symptoms were identified via centrality indices and bridge centrality indices, respectively. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure. Results: Irritability, Uncontrollable worry, Trouble relaxing, and Depressed mood had the highest centrality values. Three bridge symptoms (Depressed mood, Nervousness, and Anhedonia) were also identified. Neither gender nor region of residence was associated with network global strength, distribution of edge weights or individual edge weights. Limitations: Data were collected in a cross-sectional study design, therefore, causal relations and dynamic changes between anxiety and depressive symptoms over time could not be inferred. Generalizability of findings may be limited to Chinese nursing students during a particular phase of the current pandemic. Conclusions: Irritability, Uncontrollable worry, Trouble relaxing, and Depressed mood constituted central symptoms maintaining the anxiety-depression network structure of Chinese nursing students during the pandemic. Timely, systemic multi-level interventions targeting central symptoms and bridge symptoms may be effective in alleviating co-occurring experiences of anxiety and depression in this population.

This study examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms (depression hereafter) and their correlates and the association between depression and quality of life (QOL) in Emergency Department (ED) nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Methods This national, cross-sectional online survey was conducted between March 15 and March 20, 2020 in China. Depression and QOL were measured using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-Brief Version, respectively. 41. Phillyrin promotes autophagosome formation in A53T-αSyn-induced Parkinson's disease model via modulation of REEP1.

Abstract

The preservation of autophagosome formation presents a promising strategy for tackling neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes (MAM) serve not only as a focal point linked to various neurological disorders but also play a crucial role in supporting the biogenesis of autophagosomes. This investigation aimed to elucidate the neuroprotective properties of phillyrin against PD and its underlying mechanisms in promoting autophagosome formation. ER and mitochondria co-localization was assessed via fluorescent staining. Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorescence was employed to quantify accessible cardiolipin (CL) on mitochondrial surfaces. The levels of CL within the MAM fraction of SH-SY5Y cells were evaluated using a CL probe assay kit. Monodansylcadaverine staining was utilized to detect autophagosome formation in SH-SY5Y cells. In an A53T-alpha-synuclein (αSyn)-induced PD mouse model, the anti-PD properties of phillyrin were assessed using open field, pole climbing, and rotarod tests, as well as immunohistochemistry staining of TH+ neurons in the brain sections. In A53T-αSyn-treated SH-SY5Y cells, phillyrin facilitated autophagosome formation by suppressing CL externalization and restoring MAM integrity. Phillyrin enhanced the localization of receptor expression-enhancing protein 1 (REEP1) within MAM and mitochondria, bolstering MAM formation. Increased REEP1 levels in mitochondria, attributed to phillyrin, enhanced the interaction between REEP1 and NDPK-D, thereby reducing CL externalization. Furthermore, phillyrin exhibited a dose-dependent enhancement of motor function in mice, accompanied by an increase in the abundance of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra. These findings illuminate phillyrin's ability to enhance MAM formation through upregulation of REEP1 expression within MAM, while concurrently attenuating CL externalization via the REEP1-NDPK-D interaction. These mechanisms bolster autophagosome biogenesis, offering resilience against A53T-αSyn-induced PD. Thus, our study advances the understanding of phillyrin's complex mechanisms and underscores its potential as a therapeutic approach for PD, opening new avenues in natural product pharmacology.
