Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) outbreaks remain a huge challenge to the healthcare sectors worldwide. Their impact on morbidity and mortality, economic and healthcare burden remains a public health problem and a challenge to the HAI surveillance system, infection control, and HAI management strategies. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological patterns, distribution, causative agents of HAI outbreaks and the influence of age, COVID-19 co-infection, medical invasive procedures, and hospital units on mortality among HAI outbreaks cases. This chart review study involved HAI outbreak cases recorded in Ministry of Health hospitals during 2020–2021 in Saudi Arabia. HAI outbreak notification and investigation forms were used for data collection. A binary logistic regression model was performed to determine the significant predictors of mortality. Univariate analyses were performed to determine the association between hospital units, organisms, and COVID-19 co-infection to the site of infection. A total of 217 HAI outbreaks with 1003 cases were recorded in 2020–2021. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from 73.8% of the cases. The overall specific case fatality rate was 47.5%. The significant predictors of mortality were age, invasive medical procedures, COVID-19 co-infection, and intensive care units' admission. Moreover, ventilator-associated events were more associated with cases co-infected with COVID-19. HAI outbreaks were most prevalent in the Western and Central region and in intensive care units. Gram negative bacteria were responsible for most of cases while ventilator-associated events and central line-associated bloodstream infections were the most common infection sites. Healthcare workers (HCWs) have been highly affected by COVID-19 due to their fundamental duties in diagnosing, caring, and treating the rapidly increasing number of infected patients. Thus, are facing the occupational risk of COVID-19 infection and mortality. To investigate the COVID-19 disease clinical characteristic and associated factors among HCWs in Saudi Arabia. This was a nationwide, retrospective analytical study conducted from 5th of March 2020–21 st of August 2021. All deceased HCWs who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were included in this study. As of August 21, 2021, a total of 305 deaths were recorded due to COVID-19 infection among HCWs in all Saudi healthcare facilities. The case fatality rate was 0.35%. Deaths were highest among physicians (40.0%). Most of deceased HCWs acquired the infection from the community (80%). 71% of deceased HCWs had at least one chronic medical condition. Most of them were admitted to ICU before they passed away (83.6%). Three significant variables predicting ICU admission were presence of one or more comorbidities, hypertension, and chronic respiratory diseases HCWs are at higher risk for exposure to COVID‐19 due to their occupational risk. Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly infectious serious acute respiratory syndrome that has emerged in Wuhan, China, and has spread rapidly throughout the world including Saudi Arabia. An important source of infection of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is healthcare-associated infection (HAI). Healthcare workers (HCWs) have a greater risk of acquiring COVID-19 infection than the general population. Globally, thousands of HCWs have lost their lives due to COVID-19 infection. Identify Incidence Rate and epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 infection among health workers in Saudi Arabia. A retrospective cohort study carried from March to November 2020. HCWs selected by a Complete Enumeration Survey method. Data analyzed in frequencies and percentage tables. To test the differences, post hoc after chi-square-(χ2) tests were used. As of November 30, 2020, a total of 57,159 HCWs tested positive with COVID-19. Their median age was 34 years, and 53% were male. Nurses were the most infected HCWs category (36%). The most common source of infection was from the community (78%). The majority of HCWs who acquired the infection from healthcare facilities got the infection from another HCW (63%). There was a significant difference between community and healthcare-acquired COVID-19 in relation to gender (P < 0.001) nationality (P < 0.001) job categories (P < 0.001) three age groups (<26: P = 0.012, 26–35 and 36–45: P < 0.001), and among HCWs who worked in MOH and private healthcare facilities (P < 0.001). The total number of reported deaths among HCWs during the study period was 198, with a case fatality rate of (0.35%). This study findings show that infected HCWs characteristics were similar to the previous studies and indicate incidence rates of 10% among COVID-19 infected HCWs in Saudi Arabia. Analysis of the infection status of HCWs is critical, to understand their needs and challenges, improve protective measures, and provide effective recommendations for policymakers. Abstract Honey is becoming accepted as a reputable and effective therapeutic agent by practitioners of conventional medicine and by the general public. It has many biological activities and has been effectively used in the treatment of many diseases, e.g. gastrointestinal diseases, skin diseases, cancer, heart diseases, and neurological degeneration. Honey is an excellent source of energy containing mainly carbohydrates and water, as well as, small amounts of organic acids, vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and enzymes. As a natural product with a relatively high price, honey has been for a long time a target for adulteration. The authenticity of honey is of great importance from commercial and health aspects. The study of the physical and chemical properties of honey has been increasingly applied as a certification process for the purpose of qualification of honey samples. The current work focusses on studying the authenticity of various types of honey sold in Riyadh market (24 samples). For this purpose, physical properties (pH, hydroxylmethylfurfural HMF, and pollen test) were measured. Besides, sugar composition was evaluated using Fehling test and an HPLC method. Elemental analysis was carried out using inductively coupled plasma (ICP). In addition, the presence of drug additives was assessed by means of GC–MS. The obtained results were compared with the Saudi Arabian standards, Codex Alimentarius Commission (2001), and harmonized methods of the international honey commission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) has been the standard of care for revascularization for patients with obstructive unprotected left main coronary disease (ULMCA). There have been multiple randomized and registry data demonstrating the technical and clinical efficacy of PCI in certain patients with ULMCA. The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of ULMCA PCI as compared to CABG in patients requiring revascularization in three Gulf countries. All ULMCA cases treated by PCI with DES versus CABG were retrospectively identified from 14 centers in 3 Arab Gulf countries (KSA, UAE, and Bahrain) from January 2015 to December 2019. In total, 2138 patients were included: 1222 were treated with PCI versus 916 with CABG. Patients undergoing PCI were older, and had higher comorbidities and mean European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE). Aborted cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock were reported more in the PCI group at hospital presentation. In addition, lower ejection fractions were reported in the PCI group. In hospital mortality and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) occurred more in patients undergoing CABG than PCI. At median follow-up of 15 months (interquartile range, 30), no difference was observed in freedom from revascularization, MACCE, or total mortality between those treated with PCI and CABG. The COVID-19 pandemic had significant impact on health care worldwide which has led to a reduction in all elective admissions and management of patients through virtual care. The purpose of this study is to assess changes in STEMI volumes, door to reperfusion, and the time from the onset of symptoms until reperfusion therapy, and in-hospital events between the pre-COVID-19 (PC) and after COVID-19 (AC) period. All acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases were retrospectively identified from 16 centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 period from January 01 to April 30, 2020. These cases were compared to a pre-COVID period from January 01 to April 30, 2018 and 2019. One thousand seven hundred and eighty-five patients with a mean age 56.3 (SD ± 12.4) years, 88.3% were male. During COVID-19 Pandemic the total STEMI volumes was reduced (28%, n = 500), STEMI volumes for those treated with reperfusion therapy was reduced too (27.6%, n= 450). Door to balloon time < 90 minutes was achieved in (73.1%, no = 307) during 2020. Timing from the onset of symptoms to the balloon of more than 12 hours was higher during 2020 comparing to pre-COVID 19 years (17.2% vs <3%, respectively). There were no differences between the AC and PC period with respect to in-hospital events and the length of hospital stay. There was a reduction in the STEMI volumes during 2020. Our data reflected the standard of care for STEMI patients continued during the COVID-19 pandemic while demonstrating patients delayed presenting to the hospital. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The enhanced optical properties of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond have been pursued in academia and industry for many applications. However, the barrier of CVD technology limits the application field of diamond. Herein, the performance of CVD polycrystalline diamond thick films was improved by high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) treatment. The microstructures of CVD polycrystalline diamond films before and after HPHT treatments were thoroughly examined using optical microscope, UV–visible and infrared absorption, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). It is found that the transparency of the CVD samples at 10 GPa increases dramatically with processing temperatures, from the original opacity to almost full optical transparency. Through spectroscopic and microstructural analyses, the modification mechanism of CVD polycrystalline diamond under HPHT conditions is proposed. The results show that the HPHT treatment can significantly enhance the optical properties of the starting CVD polycrystalline diamond films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
