The glaucoma is an eye disease that causes blindness when it progresses in an advanced stage. Early glaucoma diagnosis is essential to prevent the vision loss. However, early detection is not covered due to the lack of ophthalmologists and the limited accessibility to retinal image capture devices. In this paper, we present an automated method for glaucoma screening dedicated for Smartphone Captured Fundus Images (SCFIs). The implementation of the method into a smartphone associated to an optical lens for retina capturing leads to a mobile aided screening system for glaucoma. The challenge consists in insuring higher performance detection despite the moderate quality of SCFIs, with a reduced execution time to be adequate for the clinical use. The main idea consists in deducing glaucoma based on the vessel displacement inside the Optic Disk (OD), where the vessel tree remains sufficiently modeled on SCFIs. Within this objective, our major contribution consists in proposing: (1) a robust processing for locating vessel centroids in order to adequately model the vessel distribution, and (2) a feature vector that relevantly reflect two main glaucoma biomarkers in terms of vessel displacement. Furthermore, all processing steps are carefully chosen based on lower complexity, to be suitable for fast clinical screening. A first evaluation of our method is performed using the two public DRISHTI-DB and DRIONS-DB databases, where 99% and 95% accuracy, 96.77% and 97,5% specificity and 100% and 95% sensitivity are respectively achieved. Thereafter, the method is evaluated using two fundus image databases respectively captured through a smartphone and retinograph for the same persons. We achieve 100% accuracy using both databases which assesses the robustness of our method. In addition, the detection is performed on 0.027 and 0.029 second when executed respectively on the Samsung-M51 on the Samsung-A70 smartphone devices. Our proposed smartphone app provides a cost-effective and widely accessible mobile platform for early screening of glaucoma in remote clinics or areas with limited access to fundus cameras and ophthalmologists. Catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) is involved in the inactivation of catecholamines, including the neurotransmitter dopamine. A Val108/158 Met functional polymorphism of the COMT gene has been shown to affect working memory-associated frontal lobe function in humans. In the present study, in situ hybridization histochemistry was employed to determine the mRNA expression profile of COMT in the human prefrontal cortex, striatum and midbrain and in the rat forebrain. In both species, COMT mRNA signals were observed in large pyramidal and smaller neurons in all cortical layers of the prefrontal cortex as well as in medium and large neurons in the striatum. Levels of COMT mRNA were obviously higher in neurons than in glia. The striatum, which receives a dense dopaminergic input, expressed lower levels of COMT mRNA as compared with the prefrontal cortex. Consistent with previous protein expression data, COMT mRNA was abundant in ependymal cells lining the cerebral ventricles. In the midbrain, COMT mRNA was detected in dopaminergic neurons in both species, albeit at low levels. In the rat forebrain, dense labeling was also detected in choroid plexus and hippocampal dentate gyrus and Ammon’s horn neurons. Contrary to expectations that COMT would be expressed predominantly in non-neuronal cells, the present study shows that neurons are the main cell populations expressing COMT mRNA in the prefrontal cortex and striatum. Combined with previous data about protein localization, the present results suggest that the membrane-bound isoform of COMT having a high affinity for dopamine is expressed at neuronal dendritic processes in human cortex, consistent with functional evidence that it plays an important role in dopaminergic neurotransmission. Abstract: We present a new set of brittle microtectonic measurements carried out in the Pliocene and Quaternary rocks outcropping in several key sectors of the western Betic and Rif orogen, the so-called Gibraltar orogenic arc. This data set, along with available earthquake focal mechanisms and borehole breakouts, allowed us to compile the Pliocene and Quaternary stress map of this area. This map provides new constraints for tectonic models and the present-day tectonic activity of the proposed active eastward subduction of oceanic lithosphere beneath the Gibraltar Arc and roll-back. The horizontal maximum compressive stress (S Hmax) is NW-SE in the Betic Orogen and N-S/NNW-SSE in the southern Rif Cordillera. There is a significant consistency between S Hmax and the displacement field deduced from GPS measurements with respect to the African plate: both appear to reflect the NW-SE convergence between the African and the European plates that is perturbed in the Rif. We propose that part of the eastern Rif behaves as a quasi-rigid block welded to the stable African plate. This block is bounded by important faults that localized most of the deformation disturbing the stress and surface displacement field. Pliocene to Quaternary N-S to NW-SE Africa-Europe plate convergence seem to be associated to the reorganization of the remnant Early Miocene subduction system in a continental–continental collision framework. Three-dimensional reconstruction of available seismic tomography plotted against the intermediate seismicity shows that only part of the old subduction system, whose orientation ranges from N20°E to N100°E, remains active: the portion ranging from N30°E to N40°E, orthogonal to the regional convergence. Abstract: Dopamine in the prefrontal cortex plays a critical role in normal cognition throughout the lifespan and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder. Little is known, however, about the postnatal development of the dopaminergic system in the human prefrontal cortex. In this study, we examined pre- and post-synaptic markers of the dopaminergic system in postmortem tissue specimens from 37 individuals ranging in age from 2 months to 86 years. We measured the levels of tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate limiting enzyme in dopamine biosynthesis, using Western immunoblotting. We also examined the gene expression of the three most abundant dopamine receptors (DARs) in the human prefrontal cortex: DAR1, DAR2 and DAR4, by in situ hybridization. We found that tyrosine hydroxylase concentrations and DAR2 mRNA levels were highest in the cortex of neonates. In contrast, the gene expression of DAR1 was highest in adolescents and young adults. No significant changes across age groups were detected in mRNA levels of DAR4. Both DAR1 and DAR2 mRNA were significantly lower in the aged cortex. Taken together, our data suggest dynamic changes in markers of the dopamine system in the human frontal cortex during postnatal development at both pre-and post-synaptic sites. The peak in DAR1 mRNA levels around adolescence/early adulthood may be of particular relevance to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia in which symptoms manifest during the same developmental period.
