- Abstract
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale experiment made of TeO2 bolometers that will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Excellent energy resolution, low threshold and low background make CUORE sensitive to nuclear recoils, allowing a search for dark matter interactions. With a total mass of 741 kg of TeO2, CUORE can search for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We present data obtained with CUORE-like detectors and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE-0, a 40-kg prototype, and CUORE.

Abstract: A large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with a Lagrangian stochastic model has been applied to the study of droplet dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer. Droplets are tracked in a Lagrangian way. The velocity of the fluid particle along the droplet trajectory is considered to have a large-scale part and a small-scale part given by a modified three-dimensional Langevin model using the filtered subgrid scale (SGS) statistics. An appropriate Lagrangian correlation timescale is considered in order to include the influences of gravity and inertia. Two-way coupling is also taken into account. The inter-droplet collision has been introduced as the main mechanism of secondary breakup. A stochastic model for breakup has been generalized for coalescence simulation, thereby two phenomena, coalescence and breakup are simulated in the framework of a single stochastic model. The parameters of this model, selectively for coalescence and for breakup, are computed dynamically by relating them to the local resolved properties of the dispersed phase compared to the main fluid. The model is validated by comparison with an agglomeration model and with experimental results on secondary breakup. The LES coupled with Lagrangian particle tracking and the model for droplet coalescence and breakup is applied to the study of the atmospheric dispersion of wet cooling tower plumes. The simulations are done for different droplet size distributions and volume fractions. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are future promising therapeutics, but their instability in vivo after administration remains an important barrier to their further development. Many groups evaluated EV surface modification strategies to add a targeting group with the aim of controlling EV biodistribution. Conversely, fewer groups focused on their stabilization to obtain "stealth" allogenic EVs. Modulating their stabilization and biodistribution is an essential prerequisite for their development as nano-therapeutics. Here, we explored polyoxazolines with lipid anchors association to the EV membrane (POxylation as an alternative to PEGylation) to stabilize EVs in plasma and control their biodistribution, while preserving their native properties. We found that this modification maintained and seemed to potentiate the immunomodulatory properties of EVs derived from mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSC). Using a radiolabeling protocol to track EVs at a therapeutically relevant concentration in vivo , we demonstrated that POxylation is a promising option to stabilize EVs in plasma because it increased EV half-life by 6 fold at 6 h post-injection. Moreover, EV accumulation in tumors was higher after POxylation than after PEGylation. Abstract: 17ß-Estradiol and progesterone exert a number of physiological effects throughout the brain due to interactions with several types of receptors belonging to the traditional family of intracellular hormonal receptors as well as to membrane-bound receptors. In particular, both hormones elicit rapid modifications of neuronal excitability that have been postulated to underlie their effects on synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. Likewise, both hormones have been shown to be neuroprotective under certain conditions, possibly due to the activation of pro-survival pathways and the inhibition of pro-apoptotic cascades. Because of the similarities in their cellular effects, there have been a number of questions raised by numerous observations that progesterone inhibits the effects of estrogen. In this manuscript, we first review the interactions between 17ß-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in synaptic plasticity, and conclude that, while E2 exerts a clear and important role in long-term potentiation of synaptic transmission in hippocampal neurons, the role of P4 is much less clear, and could be accounted by the direct or indirect regulation of GABAA receptors. We then discuss the neuroprotective roles of both hormones, in particular against excitotoxicity. In this case, the neuroprotective effects of these hormones are very similar to those of the neurotrophic factor BDNF. Interestingly, P4 antagonizes the effects of E2, possibly through the regulation of estrogen receptors or of proteins associated with the receptors or interactions with signaling pathways activated by E2. Overall, this review emphasizes the existence of common molecules and pathways that participate in the regulation of both synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An upper limit of 16% (at 95% c.l.) is derived for the photon fraction in cosmic rays with energies greater than 1019 eV, based on observations of the depth of shower maximum performed with the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. This is the first such limit on photons obtained by observing the fluorescence light profile of air showers. This upper limit confirms and improves on previous results from the Haverah Park and AGASA surface arrays. Additional data recorded with the Auger surface detectors for a subset of the event sample support the conclusion that a photon origin of the observed events is not favored. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents a first application of a novel Continuous and Structural Autoregressive Moving Average (CSARMA) modeling approach to BWR noise analysis. The CSARMA approach derives a unique representation of the system dynamics by more robust and reliable canonical models as basis for signal analysis in general and for reactor diagnostics in particular. In this paper, a stability event that occurred in a Swiss BWR plant during power ascension phase is analyzed as well as the time periods that preceded and followed the event. Focusing only on qualitative trends at this stage, the obtained results clearly indicate a different dynamical state during the unstable event compared to the two other stable periods. Also, they could be interpreted as pointing out a disturbance in the pressure control system as primary cause for the event. To benchmark these findings, the frequency-domain based signal transmission-path (STP) method is also applied. And with the STP method, we obtained similar relationships as mentioned above. This consistency between both methods can be considered as being a confirmation that the event was caused by a pressure control system disturbance and not induced by the core. Also, it is worth noting that the STP analysis failed to catch the relations among the processes during the stable periods, that were clearly indicated by the CSARMA method, since the last uses more precise models as basis. Abstract: Background: Induction therapies in kidney transplantation have led to prescriptions of lower doses of maintenance immunosuppression and fewer acute rejection episodes. We sought to assess the use of an affordable monoclonal antibody in terms of the incidences of rejection episodes as well as graft and patient survivals and cytomegalovirus (CMV) and opportunistic infections among our kidney transplant recipients between August 2005 and December 2010. Data were obtained for patients who had more than 20 months'' follow-up. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from kidney recipients between August 2005 and December 2010, using descriptive statistics and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. We performed a multivariate analysis with logistic regression for the dependent variables of rejection episodes and death. Results: Among 425 transplant patients graft survival was 89.2% and patient survival was 94.1% after 76.2% of patients received alemtuzumab, 10.7% daclizumab, 3.6% basiliximab, 2.4% thymoglobulin, and 7%, no induction therapy. Rejection incidence in general in the first year was 10.8% and CMV incidence 10%. There was an increased risk of rejection among subjects without any us with alemtuzumab induction therapy. Conclusion: Induction therapies show an important reduction in kidney transplant rejection incidence during the first year, allowing low doses of maintenance immunosuppressants, thereby diminishing long-term adverse effects. Alemtuzumab seemed to be a safe alternative with similar results to those obtained with standard immunosuppression. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aim: The plant species reported here are traditionally used in Northern Peru to treat bacterial infections, often addressed by the local healers as “inflammation”. The aim of this study was to evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of their antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Materials and methods: The antimicrobial activity of ethanolic and water extracts of 141 plant species was determined using a deep-well broth microdilution method on commercially available bacterial strains. Results: The ethanolic extracts of 51 species inhibited Escherichia coli, and 114 ethanolic extracts inhibited Staphylococcus aureus. In contrast, only 30 aqueous extracts showed activity against Escherichia coli and 38 extracts against Staphylococcus aureus. The MIC concentrations were mostly very high and ranged from 0.008 to 256mg/ml, with only 36 species showing inhibitory concentrations of <4mg/ml. The ethanolic extracts exhibited stronger activity and a much broader spectrum of action than the aqueous extracts. Hypericum laricifolium, Hura crepitans, Caesalpinia paipai, Cassia fistula, Hyptis sidifolia, Salvia sp., Banisteriopsis caapi, Miconia salicifolia and Polygonum hydropiperoides showed the lowest MIC values and would be interesting candidates for future research. Conclusions: The presence of antibacterial activity could be confirmed in most species used in traditional medicine in Peru which were assayed in this study. However, the MIC for the species employed showed a very large range, and were mostly very high. Nevertheless, traditional knowledge might provide some leads to elucidate potential candidates for future development of new antibiotic agents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A method is developed to search for air showers initiated by photons using data recorded by the surface detector of the Auger Observatory. The approach is based on observables sensitive to the longitudinal shower development, the signal risetime and the curvature of the shower front. Applying this method to the data, upper limits on the flux of photons of , above , are derived, with corresponding limits on the fraction of photons being 2.0%, 5.1%, and 31% (all limits at 95% c.l.). These photon limits disfavor certain exotic models of sources of cosmic rays. The results also show that the approach adopted by the Auger Observatory to calibrate the shower energy is not strongly biased by a contamination from photons. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The kinetically controlled synthesis of cephalexin in ethylene glycol was previously optimized at moderate substrate concentrations obtaining yields close to stoichiometric. A study is now presented on the production of cephalexin at very high substrates concentrations, up to 750mM acyl donor, with immobilized and cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEA) of penicillin acylase. Since conversion yield close to 100% was already obtained, attention was given to productivity under the hypothesis that increasing substrates concentration will produce a substantial increase in productivity without reducing yield. An increase of 29 times in volumetric productivity and 4.5 times in specific productivity was obtained with PGA-450 with respect to the results obtained at moderate substrates concentrations (below 100mM acyl donor). Volumetric productivity was lower for CLEA than for PGA-450, but specific productivity was almost the same for both. Sequential batch reactor operations were conducted to assess the biocatalyst operational stability and global productivity, considering one half-life as biocatalyst life cycle. Under such criterion, 40.1 and 135.5g of cephalexin/g of biocatalyst were obtained for PGA-450 and CLEA, respectively. Yields remained close to 100% during the whole cycle. These are very good values which can be improved by optimizing the biocatalyst replacement criterion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new methodology for the boiling water reactor core stability evaluation from measured noise signals has been recently developed and adopted at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). This methodology consists in a general reactor noise analysis where as much as possible information recorded during the tests is investigated prior to determining core representative stability parameters, i.e. the decay ratio (DR) and the resonance frequency, along with an associated estimate of the uncertainty range. A central part in this approach is that the evaluation of the core stability parameters is performed not only for a few but for ALL recorded neutron flux signals, allowing thereby the assessment of signal-related uncertainties. In addition, for each signal, three different model-order optimization methods are systematically employed to take into account the sensitivity upon the model-order. The current methodology is then applied to the evaluation of the core stability measurements performed at the Leibstadt NPP, Switzerland, during cycles 10, 13 and 19. The results show that as the core becomes very stable, the method-related uncertainty becomes the major contributor to the overall uncertainty range while for intermediate DR values, the signal-related uncertainty becomes dominant. However, as the core stability deteriorates, the method-related and signal-related spreads have similar contributions to the overall uncertainty, and both are found to be small. The PSI methodology identifies the origin of the different contributions to the uncertainty. Furthermore, in order to assess the results obtained with the current methodology, a comparative study is for completeness carried out with respect to results from previously developed and applied procedures.
