The aim of the paper is to simulate the response of a deep excavation supported by sheet pile walls and lime-cement columns. The application of the deep mixing technique using lime-cement products in deep excavations changes the initial state of the natural soil and creates substantial displacements associated with the installation effects. In this paper, the influence of lime-cement stabilisation was investigated using the finite element method for an instrumented braced excavation. The 2D finite element analyses were performed with advanced constitutive models for both natural clay and stabilised soil, exploiting the laboratory test made on both field mixed and laboratory mixed stabilised clay samples. The numerical results show that taking account of installation effects provides realistic predictions of deformation, excess pore water pressure evolution, as well as the structural forces in the struts. This paper describes a thermo-hydro-mechanical framework suitable for modelling the behaviour of unsaturated soils. In particular, this paper focuses on bentonite clay subjected to a thermo-hydro-mechanical load, as in the case of nuclear waste engineering barriers. The paper gives a theoretical derivation of the full set of coupled balance equations governing the material behaviour as well as an extended physical interpretation. Finally, a finite element discretisation of the equations and number of simulations verifying their implementation into a custom finite element code is provided. This paper introduces a novel explicit algorithm to solve the finite element equation linking the nodal displacements of the elements with the external forces applied via means of non-linear global stiffness matrix. The proposed method solves the equation using Runge-Kutta scheme with automatic error control. The method allows any Runge-Kutta scheme, with the paper demonstrating the algorithm efficiency for Runge-Kutta schemes of second to fifth order of accuracy. The paper discusses the theoretical background, the implementation steps and validates the proposed algorithm. The numerical tests show that the proposed method is robust and stable. In comparison to the iterative implicit methods (e.g. Newton-Raphson method), the new algorithm overcomes the problem of occasional divergence. Furthermore, considering the computation time, the fifth-order accurate scheme proves to be competitive with the iterative method. It seems that the proposed algorithm could be a powerful alternative to the standard solution procedures for the cases with strong nonlinearity, where the typical algorithms may diverge. • Grid-type settlement data were integrated with large scale damage assessment. • The total settlement parameter is uncorrelated with other damage parameters. • Rotation and limiting tensile strains showed high correlation with each other. • Evaluated damage is sensitive to chosen threshold values for each damage class. • Higher grid resolution yields higher damage severity for damage parameter rotation. Leakage into underground constructions can result in time-dependent settlements in soft clays. In urban areas with spatial variability in geologic stratification, groundwater conditions and soil compressibility, differential settlements may occur, causing damage to buildings. Current methods for damage assessment that rely on 1D formulations for settlement prediction are not representative for drawdown-induced settlements in heterogeneous environments. Thus, in this paper, we propose a stand-alone approach to integrating spatially distributed, non-Gaussian settlement data into early-stage building damage assessments at a district scale. Deformations computed using a 2D coupled hydro-mechanical finite element model with an advanced constitutive model were then employed to get the time-dependent settlements computed as a 3D grid (along x- and y-directions) over a large area. Building damage was then calculated from these green-field simulations with typically used damage parameters for each building-specific settlement profile and comparing these with damage criteria. The approach was applied to 215 buildings in central Gothenburg, Sweden by simulating scenarios of 10 kPa and 40 kPa pore pressure drawdown in the lower (confined) aquifer. Several scenarios were studied, and the correlation between damage parameters and damage criteria was assessed. Finally, a sensitivity study on grid resolution was performed, as well as a validation against observed damage data. The proposed methodology offers an effective way for early-stage damage assessments at a large area for non-Gaussian settlements so that further investigations and mitigation measures can be targeted to the buildings and locations at the highest risk for damage. Abstract This article introduces a new procedure to model two cases related to the simulation of the movements of the Tower of Pisa: installation of micropiles and soil extraction. Standard FEM requires geometry definition in the initial configuration. In this case the initial configuration is much different from the final one. m-PISE procedure overcomes this limit. Previous models based these two simulations on a back-analysis procedure. In m-PISE the volume changes are the same as the extracted or injected in-situ, providing a forecasting of the movements.
