4. The Effects of Listening to the Qur'an in the Postoperative Management of the Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the Day Surgery Unit.

- Abstract
To determine if listening to verses of the Qur'an during the immediate postoperative period has an effect on patients' anxiety levels, the number of opioids used to control pain, and the length of stay (LOS) in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Randomized Control Trial. Adult Muslim patients who had undergone a laparoscopic cholecystectomy through the Day Surgery Unit were randomly selected using computer-generated sequence into two groups, interventional and control groups. The control group listened to the natural environment and received Fentanyl for pain relief, and the interventional group listened to the Qur'an recitation and received Fentanyl for pain relief. A total of 112 (79.4%) participants completed the study. The level of the pain and anxiety was measured using the Wong-Baker Faces pain scale and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS version 9.3 (Statistical Analysis System, SAS Institute Inc, Cary, North Carolina). This study compared the effects of Qur'an audio therapy on patients' anxiety levels, opioid consumption, pain, and LOS in the PACU. The findings showed that by listening to chosen verses from the Qur'an in the recovery period post-anaesthesia, anxiety scores were significantly reduced (P =.0001), opiate use was reduced (P =.0081), and overall PACU LOS was also reduced (P =.0083). Adding the use of listening to the Qur'an as a complementary therapy is a simple and cost-effective measure to reduce the need for narcotics in the PACU, and reduce the overall PACU length of stay. 5. Parents' Experiences of Affiliate Stigma when Caring for a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

Stigma affects not only children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) themselves, but also people connected with them (i.e., parents, siblings). The capacity of parents to provide care is affected by the stigma they perceive. This meta-synthesis encompasses the experiences of affiliate stigma among parents of children with ASD. Articles were limited to the English language, those reported on stigma experienced by parents of children with ASD aged 2–18 years, published between 1940 and 2019. PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Scopus and The Cochrane Library databases were searched for eligible studies. Titles and abstracts were reviewed, and twelve articles fitted the selection criteria. The texts of the selected research papers were reviewed by two independent reviewers. Four common themes across parental experiences included felt stigma, enacted stigma, variations in stigma, and contributors to stigmatizing experiences. Highlighting the differences in parents' views on affiliate stigma is necessary to create awareness about ASD and the stigma linked with this disorder. The findings asserted that healthcare professionals, especially those in pediatric settings, and society need to have a greater awareness of the stigma and challenges that these parents encounter as this has implications on their mental and physical health. This awareness will lead to more compassionate health care delivery which will support them and create a better environment for families and children with ASD. • Parents reported experiencing stigma, blame, judgment and embarrassment due to their children's behavior. • Avoidance, rude comments or reactions from others and overt staring are prominent examples of enacted stigma. • Parents' characteristics and the child's behavior influenced the intensity of stigma experienced by parents. • The child's behaviors , lack of knowledge, awareness, acceptance and support from the public are possible factors contributing to stigma • Pediatric nurses play a crucial role in developing strategies to help families in alleviating their stress and isolation. 6. The effect of peer learning on professional competence development among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students: A quasi-experimental study.

- Abstract
Peer learning has enabled undergraduate nursing students to develop competence and clinical skills. It is rare to find quantitative studies examining the effect of peer learning on professional competence development among undergraduate nursing students comprehensively. To examine the effect of peer learning on professional competence development among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students. A quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control group pre-test post-test design. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants. Seventy-five students completed the study (37 in the intervention group and 38 in the control group). The intervention group received the peer learning program, while the control group received conventional learning during clinical practice. The Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) was used to collect data at pre-test and post-test measurement. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Professional competence had significantly increased in the intervention group. A significant interaction effect of time (pre-test and post-test) and group on professional competence development was also found. The effect of peer learning on professional competence development was significantly greater than the conventional method. Peer learning was demonstrated as an innovative learning method to develop professional competence during clinical practice among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students. It is recommended for nurse educators to consider implementing peer learning during clinical education. • Peer learning appears as an effective learning strategy. • Professional competence increases following peer learning program intervention. • Medical/technical care is the highest competence area of professional competence. Abstract Background Peer learning experiences have been reported in previous qualitative studies, however individual findings could limit practical leverage due to small sample size. Thus it is necessary to integrate invaluable findings from various qualitative studies to consider appropriateness and acceptability of peer learning in professional nurse education. Objective To identify and synthesize qualitative evidence of peer learning experiences of undergraduate nursing students so as to understand their perceptions on peer learning experiences. Design A qualitative systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) statement. Data sources Database searching was conducted on electronic databases such as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Science Direct, and MEDLINE that published from 2007 to 2017. Review Methods Qualitative studies were appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data using line by line coding, organising coding into descriptive themes, and interpreting further to generate new insights. Results Six studies were included in this review. The most common themes identified were integrated into two new insights including personal development and professional development. Conclusion This review has revealed that peer learning experiences contribute to the learning process of undergraduate nursing students in preparing them to become professional nurses through personal development and professional development. Abstract The use of physical restraint exposes patients and staff to negative effects, including death. Therefore, teaching nursing staff to develop the improve knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding physical restraint has become necessary. A quasi-experimental pre-post design was used to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on nurses' knowledge, attitude, intention, practice and incidence rate of physical restraint in 12 wards of a hospital using a self-reported questionnaire and a restraint order form in Malaysia. The educational intervention, which included a one-day session on minimising physical restraint use in hospital, was presented to 245 nurses. The results showed a significant increase in the mean knowledge, attitude sand practice score and a significant decrease in the mean intention score of nurses to use physical restraint after intervention. There was a statistically significant decrease in the incidence rate of physical restraint use in the wards of the hospital except geriatric-rehabilitation wards after intervention. Highlights • The knowledge, attitudes and intentions of nurses towards physical restraint use are essential factors that may contribute to this practice. • The best approach to improve knowledge and attitudes towards the use of physical restraint is through educational interventions. • Educational intervention could improve nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice and reduce their intention to use physical restraint. • Reduction in physical restraint use indicates the effectiveness of the educational intervention. 10. Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Sleep Disturbance among Jordanian Mothers and Fathers of Infants Admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Preliminary Study.

- Abstract
Purpose To investigate the stressors and stress levels among Jordanian parents of infants in the NICU and their relationship to three factors: anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. Design and Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in two hospitals in Jordan among 310 parents of infants in the NICU by using PSS: NICU and PROMIS. Results Both parents experienced high levels of stress, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. There was a significant difference in stress level between mothers and fathers [ t (308) = 3.471, p = 0.001], with the mothers experiencing higher stress than the fathers [mean: mothers = 108.58; fathers = 101.68]. The highest and lowest sources of stress were infant behavior and appearance (M = 4.09) and sights and sounds in the NICU (M = 3.54), respectively. The correlation between stress levels with anxiety ( r = 0.79) and depression ( r = 0.75) was strong and positive while sleep disturbance was significant and moderate ( r = 0.43). Conclusions The mothers experienced higher levels of stress compared to fathers, with positive correlations between stress and anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. Practical Implications The findings of this study create nursing awareness of parent stress and its impact, which will help them to improve nursing care for parents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Access to, interest in and attitude toward e-learning for continuous education among Malaysian nurses.

Summary Background Continuous nursing education (CNE) courses delivered through e-learning is believed to be an effective mode of learning for nurses. Implementation of e-learning modules requires pre-assessment of infrastructure and learners’ characteristics. Understanding the learners’ needs and their perspectives would facilitate effective e-learning delivery by addressing the underlying issues and providing necessary support to learners. Objective The aim of this study was to examine access to computer and Internet facilities, interest in and preferences regarding e-learning, and attitudes toward e-learning among nurses in Peninsular Malaysia. Design The study utilized a cross-sectional descriptive survey. Setting Government hospitals and community clinics in four main regions of Peninsular Malaysia. Participants A total of 300 registered nurses. Method Data were collected using questionnaires, which consisted of demographic and background items and questions on access to computer and Internet facilities, interest and preferences in e-learning, and attitudes toward e-learning. Descriptive analysis and a chi-squared test were used to identify associations between variables. Results Most Malaysian nurses had access to a personal or home computer (85.3%, n = 256) and computer access at work (85.3%, n = 256). The majority had Internet access at home (84%, n = 252) and at work (71.8%, n = 215); however, average hours of weekly computer use were low. Most nurses (83%, n = 249) did not have an e-learning experience but were interested in e-learning activities. Most nurses displayed positive attitudes toward e-learning. Average weekly computer use and interest in e-learning were positively associated with attitudes toward e-learning. Conclusion Study findings suggest that organizational support is needed to promote accessibility of information and communications technology (ICT) facilities for Malaysian nurses to motivate their involvement in e-learning. This paper describes the development and validation of an educational information web page designed for family members who have relatives in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Family members with relatives in the ICU always encounter a stressful experience. Hence, healthcare providers play a crucial in educating and alleviating the psychological distress experienced by family members with relatives in the ICU. This study was a methodology research design. The educational information material was conducted in three stages: 1. Bibliographic survey; 2. Design and development of educational material; and 3. Validation of those materials by experts in the subject and representatives of the target audience and evaluation. The validation was performed by nine experts and 30 representatives of the target audience. A minimum value of 0.78 was recommended for Content Validation Index while a standard usability score value of 0.68 indicates good app usability. The educational information material achieved acceptable CVI values (0.83) and the usability score of the web material was higher than 0.68. Meanwhile, the experts proposed changes to the educational information, which were accepted and updated for the final edition of the content. The educational information material was validated in terms of content and relevance and should be used by nurses to fulfil the needed information. Based on the knowledge given, healthcare providers can support, provide comfort, assurance and proximity to family members or relatives in the ICU. Future studies with this application are necessary to assess educational information effectiveness to reduce the psychological distress experienced by family members in the ICU. • Knowledge in terms of Triage decision-making skills and accuracy of triage decisions for adult trauma patients in emergency departments is important to enhance accurate triage. • Skills and accuracy in triage decision-making were low but significantly improved after exposure to intervention. Skills and accuracy of triage decision-making can be significantly improved by exposure to triage training. • Appropriate triage training should be provided for nurses and medical officer assistants prior to executing triage roles in emergency departments. Patients who visit emergency departments need to undergo a precise assessment to determine their priority and accurate triage category to ensure they receive the right treatment. To identify the effect of triage training on the skills and accuracy of triage decisions for adult trauma patients. A randomized controlled trial design was conducted in ten emergency department of public hospitals. A total of 143 registered nurses and medical officer assistants who performed triage roles were recruited for the control group (n = 74) and the intervention group (n = 69). The skill and accuracy of triage decisions were measured two weeks and four weeks after the intervention group were exposed to the intervention. There was a significant effect on the skill of triage decision-making between the control and the intervention group p < 0.001, η
2 partial = 0.31. Concerning the accuracy of triage decisions, the effect was significantly different between the control group and the intervention group p < 0.001, η2 partial = 0.66 across time. Undergraduate nursing students are required to acquire professional values during professional nurse education to provide safe and high quality patient care. However, there was no documentation in professional values among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students and the factors influencing its development. The purpose of this study was to determine professional values among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students and examine the relationship between students' demographic factors and professional values. A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling was applied to recruit 391 Indonesian undergraduate nursing students. The 26 items of Nurses Professional Values Scale Revision (NPVS-R) with five dimensions was employed to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistics, independent samples t -test were applied to analyse and interpret data. The result showed that the total score of nurse professional values was high (95.80 ± 12.93). The most important professional value dimension was caring, while activism was the least important values. The NPVS-R total score had a significant association with length of professional clinical practice of the students (p <.05). Nurse educators need to consider the integration of professional values when developing nursing curriculum, in order to ensure that the students develop their own understanding of these values and their importance in practice. • Indonesian nursing students acquired high level of professional values. • Caring was perceived as the most important professional values among Indonesian nursing students. • Activism was perceived as the least important professional values among Indonesian nursing students. • Age, gender, and working experience had significant relationship with professional values. • Length of clinical practice had significant relationship with professional values.
