Abstract

We report the first experimental measurements of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the γp→π+π−p reaction, obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements cover the invariant mass range of the final state hadrons from 1.6 GeV Δ(1620)1/2−, Δ(1700)3/2−, N(1720)3/2+, and Δ(1905)5/2+ resonances, which have dominant decays into the ππN final states rather than the more extensively studied single meson decay channels.

Abstract

Abstract: Engineering functional muscle tissue requires the formation of densely packed, aligned, and mature myotubes. To enhance the formation of aligned myotubes with improved contractibility, we fabricated aligned electrospun gelatin multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) hybrid fibers that were used as scaffolds for the growth of myoblasts (C2C12). The MWNTs significantly enhanced myotube formation by improving the mechanical properties of the resulting fibers and upregulated the activation of mechanotransduction related genes. In addition, the fibers enhanced the maturation of the myotubes and the amplitude of the myotube contractions under electrical stimulation (ES). Such hybrid material scaffolds may be useful to direct skeletal muscle cellular organization, improve cellular functionality and tissue formation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: Interface tissue engineering (ITE) is a rapidly developing field that aims to fabricate biological tissue alternates with the goal of repairing or regenerating the functions of diseased or damaged zones at the interface of different tissue types (also called “interface tissues”). Notable examples of the interface tissues in the human body include ligament-to-bone, tendon-to-bone and cartilage-to-bone. Engineering interface tissues is a complex process, which requires a combination of specialized biomaterials with spatially organized material composition, cell types and signaling molecules. Therefore, the use of conventional biomaterials (monophasic or composites) for ITE has certain limitations to help stimulate the tissue integration or recreating the structural organization at the junction of different tissue types. The advancement of micro- and nanotechnologies enable us to develop systems with gradients in biomaterials properties that encourage the differentiation of multiple cell phenotypes and subsequent tissue development. In this review we discuss recent developments in the fabrication of gradient biomaterials for controlling cellular behavior such as migration, differentiation and heterotypic interactions. Moreover, we give an overview of potential uses of gradient biomaterials in engineering interface tissues such as soft tissues (e.g. cartilage) to hard tissues (e.g. bone), with illustrated experimental examples. We also address fundamentals of interface tissue organization, various gradient biomaterials used in ITE, micro- and nanotechnologies employed for the fabrication of those gradients, and certain challenges that must be met in order for ITE to reach its full potential. Abstract

We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry $A_1$ on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton ($^{15}$NH$_3$) and deuteron ($^{15}$ND$_3$) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present paper, we concentrate on our results for $A_1(x,Q^2)$ and the related ratio $g_1/F_1(x,Q^2)$ in the resonance and the deep inelastic regions for our lowest and highest beam energies, covering a range in momentum transfer $Q^2$ from 0.05 to 5.0 GeV$^2$ and in final-state invariant mass $W$ up to about 3 GeV. Our data show detailed structure in the resonance region, which leads to a strong $Q^2$--dependence of $A_1(x,Q^2)$ for $W$ below 2 GeV. At higher $W$, a smooth approach to the scaling limit, established by earlier experiments, can be seen, but $A_1(x,Q^2)$ is not strictly $Q^2$--independent. We add significantly to the world data set at high $x$, up to $x = 0.6$. Our data exceed the SU(6)-symmetric quark model expectation for both the proton and the deuteron while being consistent with a negative $d$-quark polarization up to our highest $x$. Abstract

Spatial coordination of cell orientation is of central importance in tissue/organ construction. In this study, we developed microfabricated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoribbon sheets with unique structures, using spin-coating and micropatterning techniques, in order to generate a hierarchically assembled cellular structure consisting of murine skeletal myoblasts (C2C12). The nanoribbon sheets were composed of aligned PLGA nanoribbons in the center, and strips on four sides which take a role as bridges to connect and immobilize the aligned nanoribbons. Such unique structures facilitated the alignment of C2C12 cells into bilayer cell sheets, and cellular alignment was directed by the aligned direction of nanoribbons. The nanoribbon sheets also facilitated the construction of multilayer cell sheets with anisotropic (orthogonal) and isotropic (parallel) orientations. The enhanced expression of myogenic genes of C2C12 cells on the bilayer cell sheets demonstrated that the nanoribbons induced C2C12 cell differentiation into mature myoblasts. The micropatterned nanoribbon sheets may be a useful tool for directing cellular organization with defined alignment for regenerative medicine and drug screening applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Effective wound management is important, as millions of people suffer traumatic injuries and surgical operations annually. Proper wound closure is essential for the structural and functional restoration of damaged tissues. In addition to conventional sutures, various advanced surgical materials with multiple functions have been developed for more reliable and improved wound healing performance in the past few years. Here, polymeric surgical materials for soft tissue wound closure are comprehensively reviewed, including both commercially available materials and newly developed materials. These materials, based on natural, synthetic or composite polymers, are classified and discussed as invasive and non-invasive surgical materials. Their properties (antibacterial, hemostatic, stimuli-responsive, drug delivery, or a combination thereof) are critically analysed in the context of improving wound healing. Moreover, how to tune these properties (e.g., chemical grafting of antibacterial moieties, nano-enabled regulation of hemostasis, dual stimuli-responsive design, etc.) are clearly discussed. Finally, challenges in the field and potential solutions to tackle them are also proposed.
