- Abstract
The growth of multi-layer germanium-tin (GeSn) quantum wells offers an intriguing pathway towards the integration of lasers in a CMOS platform. An important step in growing high quality quantum well interfaces is the formation of an initial wetting layer. However, key atomic-scale details of this process have not previously been discussed. We use scanning tunneling microscopy combined with density functional theory to study the deposition of Sn on Ge(1 0 0) at room temperature over a coverage range of 0.01 to 1.24 monolayers. We demonstrate the formation of a sub-2% Ge content GeSn wetting layer from three atomic-scale characteristic ad-dimer structural components, and show that small quantities of Sn incorporate into the Ge surface forming two atomic configurations. The ratio of the ad-dimer structures changes with increasing Sn coverage, indicating a change in growth kinetics. At sub-monolayer coverage, the least densely packing ad-dimer structure is most abundant. As the layer closes, forming a two-dimensional wetting layer, the more densely packing ad-dimer structure become dominant. These results demonstrate the capability to form an atomically smooth wetting layer at room temperature, and provide critical atomic-scale insights for the optimization of growth processes of GeSn multi-quantum-wells to meet the quality requirements of optical GeSn-based devices.

The metastable hexagonal-diamond phase of Si and Ge (and of SiGe alloys) displays superior optical properties with respect to the cubic-diamond one. Based on first-principle calculations we show that the surface energy of the typical facets exposed in Si and Ge nanowires is lower in the hexagonal-diamond phase than in the cubic one. By exploiting a synergic approach based also on a recent state-of-the-art interatomic potential and on a simple geometrical model, we investigate the relative stability of nanowires in the two phases up to few tens of nm in radius, highlighting the surface-related driving force and discussing its relevance in recent experiments. We also explore the stability of Si and Ge core-shell nanowires with hexagonal cores (made of GaP for Si nanowires, of GaAs for Ge nanowires). In this case, the stability of the hexagonal shell over the cubic one is also favored by the energy cost associated with the interface linking the two phases. Interestingly, our calculations indicate a critical radius of the hexagonal shell much lower than the one reported in recent experiments, indicating the presence of a large kinetic barrier allowing for the enlargement of the wire in a metastable phase.

- Abstract
Compositional segregation is commonly observed during the growth of III-V alloys in core-shell nanowires. Nanometer-thin stripes, enriched in one of the alloy components, are observed along the six <1 1 2> directions perpendicular to the [1 1 1]-wire axis, departing from the core to the outer shell edges in between the {1 1 0} faceted sidewalls. While it has been well established that the phenomenon occurs because of the different mobility of the alloy components, the actual mechanisms by which it happens are yet unclear. A phase-field model, coupling deposition and surface diffusion dynamics, is here developed to inspect the simultaneous evolution of the shell morphology and composition during growth. Both surface energy anisotropy and orientation-dependent growth rates are taken into account to identify their different role. Simulations reveal that the observed segregation is mainly triggered by the enhanced growth rate at the facet edges, while surface anisotropy keeps the stripes thin. Polarity effects are also included to differentiate the behavior between <1 1 2>A and <1 1 2>B orientations, so to reproduce the experimental observation of a 3-fold symmetry.

- Abstract
We present an investigation of the structural quality of arrays of 3C-SiC micropillars and microridges grown epitaxially on deeply etched Si(0 0 1) substrates offcut towards [1 1 0]. Using high resolution X-ray diffraction with reciprocal space mapping and optical as well as scanning electron microscopy, we obtain information about the stacking fault (SF) formation in different crystallographic directions. The SF density is strongly correlated with the microcrystal size and orientation and a reduction of the SF density is found in the [1 1 1] and [1 −1 1] directions. No variation of the average SF size was detected for varying SiC microcrystal size and shape.

This study is focused on the use of a hybrid organic-inorganic silica (Silica-SOM) for the removal of Rhodamine B dye (RhB) from water media. Because of its hybrid structure, Silica-SOM has the unique property of being swellable in the presence of an organic solvent, thus increasing the volume available for pollutants adsorption. The adsorption capacity of the Silica-SOM to adsorb RhB from water media has been determined. In particular, if the material is previously swollen with an organic solvent, it is able to sequester more than 99 % of dye molecules in a 1.0 × 10−5 M RhB solution in less than 1 h at ambient conditions. In addition, the ability of Silica-SOM to be re-generated by mild sonication in ethanol after one RhB adsorption cycle was tested for the first time: the material was easily regenerated and used for six consecutive adsorption cycles; in each of them there is no loss in adsorption performance, which remains quantitatively high and extremely fast. - Abstract
We simulate the morphological evolution of Ge microcrystals, grown out-of-equilibrium on deeply patterned Si substrates, as resulting from surface diffusion driven by the tendency toward the minimization of the surface energy. In particular, we report three-dimensional phase-field simulations accounting for the realistic surface energy anisotropy of Ge/Si crystals. In Salvalaglio et al. (2015) [10] it has been shown both by experiments and simulations that annealing of closely spaced crystals leads to a coalescence process with the formation of a suspended film. However, this was explained only by considering an isotropic surface energy. Here, we extend such a study by showing first the morphological changes of faceted isolated crystals. Then, the evolution of dense arrays is considered, describing their coalescence along with the evolution of facets. Combined with the previous results without anisotropy in the surface energy, this work allows us to confirm and assess the key features of the coalescence process.

We simulate the morphological evolution of Ge microcrystals, grown out-of-equilibrium on deeply patterned Si substrates, as resulting from surface diffusion driven by the tendency toward the minimization of the surface energy. In particular, we report three-dimensional phase-field simulations accounting for the realistic surface energy anisotropy of Ge/Si crystals. In Salvalaglio et al. (2015) [10] it has been shown both by experiments and simulations that annealing of closely spaced crystals leads to a coalescence process with the formation of a suspended film. However, this was explained only by considering an isotropic surface energy. Here, we extend such a study by showing first the morphological changes of faceted isolated crystals. Then, the evolution of dense arrays is considered, describing their coalescence along with the evolution of facets. Combined with the previous results without anisotropy in the surface energy, this work allows us to confirm and assess the key features of the coalescence process.

47. A "risk-induced" emission mitigation pathway for Kazakhstan.

- Abstract
The key goal of this research is to propose a method (and a tool) to explore the evolution of the energy sector in Kazakhstan subject to a flexible "user-defined" criterion (e.g. perception of risk of competitiveness loss for the system), so as to trigger the transition towards the emission reduction in an "indirect" manner. The undertaken experiments show that risk reduction policies can be very "synergic" with mitigation ambitions, or, in other words, that the transition towards GHG mitigation can be pushed by other forces (rather than by pure environmental concerns only). The potential beneficiaries of such a type of analysis are groups of stakeholders of various nature: decision makers, academia, civil society, experts interested in proposing/testing alternative formulation of the additional criterion of the analysis (risky configuration of the energy mix) and in assessing the impacts on the energy and climate dynamics of Kazakhstan. The "basic" structure of the model (upon which the updated and more targeted version of the model used in this study is built) is available on a collaborative platform. This study is part of the research material that aims to support the investigation of carbon neutrality pathways in Kazakhstan and it can be seen as a continuation and further development of the "Kazakhstan's Road to Net Zero GHG Emission Vision". • This study contributes to filling a critical research (and discussion) gap on the net-zero emissions transition for Kazakhstan. • The goal is to show to what extent emissions mitigation pathways can be induced by risk-related criteria. • A (model-based) trade-off analysis is used to explore the synergies between risk and emissions mitigation ambitions.
