• Zenith sky brightness maps in the V and B bands of the region of Catalonia are presented in this paper. • The maps have been created using the light pollution numerical model Illumina v2. • The methodology was tested successfully by comparing simulated values to measurements. • The resulting maps have been compared to the zenith sky brightness world atlas and also to Sky Quality Meter (SQM) dynamic measurements. Zenith sky brightness maps in the V and B bands of the region of Catalonia are presented in this paper. For creating them we have used the light pollution numerical model Illumina v2. The maps have a sampling of 5 × 5 km for the whole region with an improved resolution of 1 × 1 km for one of the provinces within Catalonia, Tarragona. Before creating the final maps, the methodology was tested successfully by comparing the computed values to measurements in nineteen different locations spread out throughout the territory. The resulting maps have been compared to the zenith sky brightness world atlas and also to Sky Quality Meter (SQM) dynamic measurements. When comparing to measurements we found small differences mainly due to mismatching in the location of the points studied, and also due to differences in the natural sky brightness and atmospheric content. In the comparison to the world atlas some differences were expected as we are taking into account the blocking effect of topography and obstacles, and also due to a more precise light sources characterization. The results of this work confirm the conclusion found in other studies that the minimum sampling for studying sky brightness fine details is of 1 × 1 km. However, a sampling of 5 × 5 km is interesting when studying general trends, mainly for vast areas, due to the reduction of the time required to create the maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the built environment is among the main contributing sectors to climate change, it is needed to investigate new paradigms to push decarbonization efforts towards the ambitious objectives defined internationally. It is a shared understanding that shifting the perspective from the single building to the district perspective is required to fully take into consideration the complexity of all interactions undergoing within the built environment, thus the concept of Positive Energy District emerged as a district with annual net zero energy import and net zero CO 2 emission working towards an annual local surplus production of renewable energy. In this framework, this paper explores the investigation of the potential for achieving the level of Positive Energy District in a group of non-residential buildings in Balaguer, Catalonia, Spain. These buildings, occupying 8,825 m2 in the city centre, require significant refurbishment for improved energy performance. The analysis includes building energy modelling and simulation, renovation studies, several alternative balance calculations, and carbon emissions assessment. The paper also considers mobility and embodied energy and their impact on energy/carbon balances. The results show that Positive Energy Districts carbon and primary energy balances are not met with rooftop PV installations when retrofitting an existing district towards the Positive energy target but further significant PV areas (roughly + 50%) are required to meet merely the use stage balances: negative results are traced when mobility and embodied energy are computed. A formulation alternative to the simple mathematical balance to facilitate the diffusion of Positive Energy District as catalyst of urban decarbonisation could be needed, including context factors and alternative systems (e.g., rating systems). The challenge of sustainability is not about producing more or better managerial knowledge. It is in fact a transformation of the systems and structures that perpetuate environmental problems that is emerging as the key sustainability goal. In this paper we show the relevance of this argument, by using wildfires as symptoms of the challenges posed by global change to western societies, where wildfires are becoming increasingly problematic. Climate change, land abandonment, exurban expansion and fire suppression schemes are some of the main reasons behind this. Tackling the increasing intensity and complexity of wildfires is consequently emerging as an important research and policy topic. A central question in the literature is how to achieve a more sustainable coexistence with wildfire. Fuel reduction treatments, fire restoration, the reform of current suppression policies and adaptive institutional arrangements have all been debated. However, the social-ecological transformations needed to effectively implement these management options are not sufficiently understood. This paper looks at the efforts of the Catalan wildfire management system to cope with wildfire risk over the last decades. In particular, the emergence of GRAF, a group of wildfire fighting specialists in the Fire Department, is described. Emphasizing the need to understand wildfires as an inherent part of Mediterranean ecosystems, the expansion of GRAF highlights how learning to coexist with wildfire in Catalonia has triggered a set of transformative processes in institutional arrangements and power relationships of the wildfire management system. Our data also illustrate how coexisting with wildfire entails a dramatic social-ecological transformation in terms of land-uses, settlement patterns, energy supply systems and social values about wildfires. Moreover, we warn that in the absence of such systemic changes, management improvements might paradoxically reinforce risk. We conclude that wildfire researchers and practitioners should link the proposed management options to a deeper debate on how to produce alternative, less flammable landscapes, as agents of a broader social-ecological transformation to sustainability. In this paper we estimate the impact of higher early preschool access on offending behavior later in time, exploiting a nationwide public preschool expansion that took place in Spain over the 1990s. This is the first study providing evidence on the relationship between preschool and crime using a large-scale, universal-access program rather than targeted initiatives reserved for disadvantaged children. Our identification strategy relies on the staggered implementation of the Spanish preschool expansion across regions and birth cohorts. We link the education data to a unique administrative crime dataset recording the offenses committed in the region of Catalonia over the period 2009–2014. On average, a 1 percentage point increase in preschool access among the age 0–3 population yields 1.6% fewer crime actions during youth and young adulthood. Larger effects on impulsive-crime categories provide suggestive evidence for non-cognitive-skills improvements being important drivers of our results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary The aim of this paper is to analyse the potential relationship between flash flood events and convective precipitation in Catalonia, as well as any related trends. The paper starts with an overview of flash floods and their trends in the Mediterranean region, along with their associated factors, followed by the definition of, identification of, and trends in convective precipitation. After this introduction the paper focuses on the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula, for which there is a long-term precipitation series (since 1928) of 1-min precipitation from the Fabra Observatory, as well as a shorter (1996–2011) but more extensive precipitation series (43 rain gauges) of 5-min precipitation. Both series have been used to characterise the degree of convective contribution to rainfall, introducing the β parameter as the ratio between convective precipitation versus total precipitation in any period. Information about flood events was obtained from the INUNGAMA database (a flood database created by the GAMA team), with the aim of finding any potential links to convective precipitation. These flood data were gathered using information on damage where flood is treated as a multifactorial risk, and where any trend or anomaly might have been caused by one or more factors affecting hazard, vulnerability or exposure. Trend analysis has shown an increase in flash flood events. The fact that no trends were detected in terms of extreme values of precipitation on a daily scale, nor on the associated ETCCDI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices) extreme index, could point to an increase in vulnerability, an increase in exposure, or changes in land use. However, the summer increase in convective precipitation was concentrated in less torrential events, which could partially explain this positive trend in flash flood events. The β parameter has been also used to characterise the type of flood event according to the features of the precipitation. The highest values correspond to short and local events, usually with daily β values above 0.5, while the minimum threshold of daily β for catastrophic flash floods is 0.31. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of a detailed method for developing cost-optimal studies for the energy refurbishment of residential buildings. The method takes part of an innovative approach: two-step evaluation considering thermal comfort, energy and economic criteria. The first step, the passive evaluation, was presented previously [1] and the results are used to develop the active evaluation, which is the focus of this paper. The active evaluation develops a cost-optimal analysis to compare a set of passive and active measures for the refurbishment of residential buildings. The cost-optimal methodology follows the European Directives and analysed the measures from the point of view of non-renewable primary energy consumption and the global costs over 30 years. The energy uses included in the study are heating, domestic hot water, cooling, lighting and appliances. In addition, the results have been represented following the energy labelling scale. The paper shows the results of a multi-family building built in the years 1990–2007 and located in Barcelona with two configurations: with natural ventilation and without natural ventilation. The persistence of information communicated between humans is difficult to measure as it is affected by many features. This paper presents an approach to computationally model the cognitive processes of information sharing to describe persistence or extinction of communication in Twitter over time. The adaptive mental network model explains, for example, how an individual can experience information overflow on a topic, and how this affects the sharing of information. Parameter tuning by Simulated Annealing is used to identify characteristics of the network model that fit to empirical data from Twitter. This paper presents a detailed method to develop cost-optimal studies for the energy renovation of residential buildings. A realistic characterization of the building has been introduced, using measurement and survey data. The method allows improving the interaction between the occupancy and the building, and the characterization of the real state of the construction. In addition, the building simulation includes vernacular strategies of the Mediterranean architecture, as for example the natural ventilation and the use of solar protection. The method presented takes part of an innovative approach: two-step evaluation considering thermal comfort, energy and economic criteria. The passive evaluation is the focus of the paper and evaluates the passive measures from an economic and thermal comfort point of view. This method prioritizes the passive measures rather than the active ones, considering the thermal comfort of the users as a criterion of decision. The paper shows the results of a multi-family building built in the years 1990–2007 and located in two climates C2 and B3 (Barcelona and Tarragona). The method provides technical and economic information about a set of passive energy efficiency measures, with the objective to help to make decisions for choosing the appropriate combination of passive measures. The main aim of this paper is to build a Real Time Leading Economic Indicator (RT-LEI) that improves Composite Leading Indicators (CLI)'s performance to anticipate GDP trends and turning points for the Spanish economy. The indicator has been constructed using a Factor Analysis and is composed of 21 variables concerning motor vehicle activity, financial activity, real estate activity, economic sentiment, and industrial sector. The data sources used are Google Trends and Thomson Reuters Eikon-Datastream. This work contributes to the literature, studying the dynamics of GDP, CLI and RT-LEI using Fractional Cointegration VAR (FCVAR model) and Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) for its resolution. The results show that the model does not present mean reversion and it is expected the RT-LEI reveals a bear trend in the next two years, alike IMF and Consensus FUNCAS′ forecasts. This paper proposes to use chromatographic fingerprints coupled to multivariate techniques to authenticate the geographical origin of extra-virgin olive oils (EVOO) of the Arbequina botanical variety. This methodology uses the whole or part of the chromatogram as input data for the classification models but does not identify or quantify the chemicals constituents. Arbequina monovarietal EVOOs from three geographical origins were studied: two from adjacent European Protected Designation of Origin areas, Siurana and Les Garrigues, in Catalonia in the northeast of Spain; and the third from the south of Spain (Andalucia and Murcia). Three chromatographic fingerprints of each sample were obtained by both reverse and normal phase liquid chromatography coupled to charged aerosol detector (HPLC-CAD), and high temperature gas chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector [(HT)GC-FID]. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used as exploratory technique and soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) and partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were used as classification methods. High and low-level data fusion strategies were also applied to improve the classification results obtained when the data acquired from each analytical technique were separately used. The results were best for the PLS-DA model with low-level fusion of two techniques (HT)GC-FID with HPLC-CAD, independently of the phase mode. Sensitivity and specificity were 100% in almost all classes, error was 0% for all classes and an inconclusive ratio of just 4% was obtained for the Les Garrigues class due to double assignations. • People with diabetes are at higher risk of suffering from vascular diseases. • This paper aims to predict diabetes-related complications using machine learning (ML) algorithms. • ML methods reported good performance as prediction tools. • The results allow for the identification of populations at risk. Using machine learning algorithms and administrative data, we aimed to predict the risk of being diagnosed with several diabetes-related complications after one-, two- and three-year post-diabetes diagnosis. We used longitudinal data from administrative registers of 610,019 individuals in Catalonia with a diagnosis of diabetes and checked the presence of several complications after diabetes onset from 2013 to 2017: hypertension, renal failure, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke. Four different machine learning (ML) algorithms (logistic regression (LR), Decision tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB)) will be used to assess their prediction performance and to evaluate the prediction accuracy of complications changes over the period considered. 610,019 people with diabetes were included. After three years since diabetes diagnosis, the area under the curve values ranged from 60% (retinopathy) to 69% (congestive heart failure), whereas accuracy rates varied between 60% (retinopathy) to 75% (hypertension). RF was the most relevant technique for hypertension, myocardial and retinopathy, and LR for the rest of the comorbidities. The Shapley additive explanations values showed that age was associated with an elevated risk for all diabetes-related complications except retinopathy. Gender, other comorbidities, co-payment levels and age were the most relevant factors for comorbidity diagnosis prediction. Our ML models allow for the identification of individuals newly diagnosed with diabetes who are at increased risk of developing diabetes-related complications. Abstract: This article examines the governance structures for managing the location and operation of Intensive Livestock Farming Operations (ILFOs). The article focuses on the hog sector and compares two very different jurisdictions: Manitoba, Canada and Catalonia, Spain. Both are regions that have witnessed recent increases in hog production, including increasing spatial concentration of ILFOs and an increase in size of those ILFOs. Policy has both fostered and sought to manage the increased production. The paper draws on the literature on regulatory regimes, environmental regulation, and political economy to frame the comparative case studies of the impacts of environmental regulations on hog production. Following a brief background description of restructuring, the changing legislative frameworks for Manitoba and Catalonia are described. The paper concludes that environmental policy in Manitoba and Catalonia has been more successful in managing overall production (e.g., manure management, and location of operations) than in limiting total production. Abstract: The paper has three objectives: firstly, to evaluate how the extent of clustering in wildfires differs across the years they occurred; secondly, to analyse the influence of covariates on trends in the intensity of wildfire locations; and thirdly, to build maps of wildfire risks, by year and cause of ignition, in order to provide a tool for preventing and managing vulnerability levels. For these objectives we analysed the spatio-temporal patterns produced by wildfire incidences in Catalonia, located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. The methodology used has allowed us to quantify and assess possible spatial relationships between the distribution of risk of ignition and causes. These results may be useful in fire management decision-making and planning. • First model multi farm, multi stage and multi period to optimize a Pig Supply Chain. • Fattening planning under all-in-all-out management in a multi farm environment. • Collaborative research supported by a Spanish pig company. This paper presents a production planning model for managing the pig herd production system operating as a Pig Supply Chain (PSC). The model is formulated as a multiperiod mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). The production system may represent a large farmer, a private company or a cooperative managing several farms operating according to the so-called three site system (sow, rearing and fattening farms; the latter under all-in-all-out management). The model is intended for practical use and illustrated with a case study based on a real instance in Catalonia (Spain). The model helps PSC managers when making decisions by providing an overall view for planning production over time. The objective is to maximize the total revenue calculated by the total amount of sales to the abattoir minus production costs. The latter depend on the feeding system, veterinary and medical care, labor and transportation. Practical results include a schedule of animal transfers between farms, batch management and deliveries to the abattoir from fattening farms, number of trips and the occupancy rate of all facilities. Bottlenecks in the production process regarding flow of animals, throughput and capacities along the PSC were detected beforehand allowing the company to react accordingly. Then, as three fattening farms were found to be redundant, farm occupation rate could be improved by 22% purchasing additional piglets. Abstract: This paper measures the effects of beach characteristics and hotel location with respect to the beach on sun-and-beach hotel prices by using a well-established hedonic perspective. The paper’s main results are that, after controlling for the relevant variables, location in front of a beach increases the price of a room in costal hotels of Catalonia by a figure between 13 and 17%, and that a Blue Flag increases the price by around 11.5%. The effects on hotels’ prices of other beach characteristics (such as beach length, width, sand type or beach services) are also estimated. With these estimates, the paper ranks beaches according to their characteristics and provides a setting to assess different policies regarding beaches from the point of view of hotels, such as regeneration, maintenance or achieving a Blue Flag award. Tourist destination image (TDI) is considered crucial when planning a trip. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology to analyse and measure the (in)congruity or gap between the two sides of the TDI (supply-side projected vs. demand-side perceived) based on the difference between proportions of appearance. This method is applied to an outstanding Mediterranean destination, Catalonia, based on three different information sources: induced (Catalan Tourist Board dossier), autonomous (Lonely Planet travel guide), and organic (UGC: user-generated content). UGC consists of a random sample of 80,000 online travel reviews written in English by tourists who visited Catalonia during 2015. Our findings emphasize discrepancies in three aspects of the TDI, namely spatial, cognitive and affective image. The measurement of the gap between these TDI components shows that organic images (perceived) are significantly different from autonomous and induced images (projected), and that, the last two resemble one another much more. Abstract: Physical hydronomics (PH) is the specific application of thermodynamics that physically characterizes the governance of water bodies, i.e., the Water Framework Directive (WFD) for European Union citizens. In this paper, calculation procedures for the exergy analysis of river basins are developed within the WFD guidelines and a case study is developed. Therefore, it serves as an example for the feasible application of PH in the environmental cost assessment of water bodies, accordingly to the principle of recovery of the costs related to water services in accordance with the polluter pays principle, one of the milestones of the WFD. The Foix River watershed, a small river located at the Inland Basins of Catalonia (IBC), has been analyzed. Main results, difficulties, and constraints encountered are shown in the paper. Following WFD''s quantity and quality objectives previously defined, water costs are calculated and the equivalence between the exergy loss due to water users and the exergy variation along the river are also analyzed. Abstract: The main interest of the methodology for the investigation of wastewater reclamation and reuse systems which is proposed in this paper is that all costs and benefits (social and private) are considered in the economic and technological analysis. This general concern allows an improvement in the design of investment decisions. Traditionally, an economic-financial analysis of wastewater reclamation and reuse systems focuses exclusively on the study of costs and private benefits. The methodology that is presented in this paper takes into account not only the private impacts but also the project spillovers which could have relevance on the project. In this research, the use value of the reclaimed water in the Natural Wildlife Park of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà is estimated. The travel cost technique is applied to estimate the external value of the Park. According to the final results, the price of the reclaimed water in the Park should have to be between 0.75 €/m3 (without opportunity cost) and 1.20 €/m3 (with opportunity cost). Abstract: The present paper deals with plants used in veterinary medicine in Montseny. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the Montseny massif, which is situated in north-east Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula), covers 826km2 and has a population of 80,000. The information was obtained through 120 ethnobotanical interviews to 180 informants. Out of 584 species reported, 351 are claimed to be used in the health field (human and veterinary medicine), 280 in human and animal food and 236 have another kind of popular use. Medicinal species represent around 16.5% of Montseny''s vascular flora. In a previous paper we addressed plant use in human medicine, and the present paper deals with veterinarian uses. As a reflection of the importance of rural life in the region, at least until recent times, a substantial number of medicinal plants (89 species, representing 6% of the flora of the territory and 6.4% of all medicinal use-reports in the region) is used in veterinary medicine. These remedies are mostly for cows, calves, sheep, pigs and horses, and secondarily, to poultry, rabbits and dogs. The main ailments treated are postnatal problems, intestinal troubles, wounds and dermatological problems. In many cases, the use of these remedies in veterinary medicine is fully consistent with their use in human medicine. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show a climatology of Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS) in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, on the basis of meteorological radar observations. Special attention was paid to those cases that have produced heavy rainfalls during the period 1996–2000. Identification of the MCS was undertaken using two procedures. Firstly, the precipitation structures at the lowest level were recognised by means of a 2D algorithm that distinguishes between convective and non-convective contribution. Secondly, the convective cells were identified using a 3D procedure quite similar to the SCIT (Storm Cell Identification and Tracking) algorithm that looks for the reflectivity cores in each radar volume. Finally, the convective cells (3D) were associated with the 2D structures (convective rainfall areas), in order to characterize the complete MCS. Once this methodology was presented the paper offers a proposal for classifying the precipitation systems, and particularly the MCS. 57 MCS structures were classified: 49% of them were identified as linearly well-organised systems, called TS (39%), LS (18%) and NS (43%). In addition to the classification, the following items were analysed for each MCS found: duration, season, time of day, area affected and direction of movement, and main radar parameters related with convection. The average features of those MCS show an area of about 25000 km2, Z max values of 47 dBz, an echotop of 12 km, the maximum frequency at 12 UTC and early afternoon and a displacement towards E-NE. The study was completed by analysing the field at surface, the presence of a mesoscale low near the system and the quasi-stationary features of three cases related with heavy rainfalls. Maximum rainfall (more then 200 mm in 6 h) was related with the presence of a cyclone in combination with the production of a convective train effect. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Landscape is the result of a collective transformation of nature. It is the cultural translation of a society on a particular portion of nature, and this translation is not only material, but also spiritual, ideological and symbolic. In this sense, landscape acts as a centre of meaning and symbolism, and creates a sense of belonging and a territorial identity that is particularly strong in some nations. This paper analyses the relevant role of landscape in the creation of national identity in Catalonia, from a historical and contemporary perspective. The historical perspective analyses this role at the dawn of Catalan nationalism in the late 19th century, and, in this context, stresses the importance of mountainous landscapes in the process of forming the Catalan nation. The contemporary perspective centres on the existence of two current “discourses” linked to the territory and the landscape, the legacy of the two main cultural discourses in nineteenth century Catalonia: the romantic “Modernista” movement and the more realistic, pragmatic “Noucentista” movement. These two discourses enjoyed a peaceful coexistence up until recently, but now, after two decades of nationalist government over a period of great economic development, the inherent contradictions are beginning to emerge and give rise to unprecedented territorial conflicts.This paper sets out to show how landscape, seen as the cultural projection of a society on a certain space, becomes a fundamental element in the creation process of a national identity, in this case the Catalan identity, both in its late 19th century origins and in its present form. In this context, we would like to stress the importance of mountainous landscapes in the formative process of the Catalan nation. Like other nations that began to structure their identity discourse in political and cultural terms at that time, the interpretation and use of the landscape in Catalonia are rooted in readings and meanings of “Modernista” romanticism. However, the equally rhetorical but much more useful “Noucentista” vision soon appeared as a justification for the transformation of the territory. The article charts the course of these two discourses and their singular interaction in Catalonia. The first section shows how the subject of nationalism is approached through political geography and the second section gives an overview of the relationship between landscape and identity. Finally, the epilogue proposes a reading of the contemporary territorial and landscape conflicts in Catalonia that have emerged now that the “Modernista” and “Noucentista” visions have outrun their course of peaceful coexistence. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the region called Pallars—consisting of two districts, Pallars Sobira` and Pallars Jussa`—, situated in the Central Pyrenees, in North West Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula), with an approximate area of 2530 km2 and a population of 19 000. Through interviews with 264 people, we obtained data on 437 plant species used for health care. We detected 867 unreported or uncommon uses corresponding to 272 plant species, 52 of which had never or very rarely been cited as medicinal. This is the second paper of a series intended to present the most important findings concerning the ethnopharmacology of the area studied; it includes unreported or very uncommon uses of known medicinal plant species. A previous paper reported the general results and the new or very scarcely reported medicinal vascular plants, and a further one will deal with medicinal non vascular plants. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the region called Pallars—constituted by two districts, Pallars Sobira` and Pallars Jussa`—, situated in the Central Pyrenees, in North West Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula), with an approximate area of 2530 km2 and a population of 19 000. Through interviews with 264 people, we obtained data on 437 plant species used for health care. We detected 867 unreported or uncommon uses corresponding to 272 plant species, 52 of which had never or very rarely been cited as medicinal. This is the third paper of a series intended to present the most important findings concerning the ethnopharmacology of the area studied; it includes information on 18 pharmaceutical uses of 16 non-vascular plant species (two algae, eight fungi, five lichens and one moss). Two previous papers reported the general results and the new or very scarcely reported medicinal vascular plants, and the unreported or very uncommon uses of already known medicinal plants. • The plurilingual model in Catalonia represents the politics of innovation. • There are many interests at play behind the introduction of innovations in education. • International educational trends are invoked for political purposes. • Translanguaging is uncritically appropriated and included in the plurilingual model. • Sociolinguistic concepts are neutralised in discourses of educational innovation. • Research may become a sociopolitical tool external to sociolinguistics. This paper aims to investigate the politics of plurilingualism in education and, more concretely, the various interests at play behind the introduction of innovations by education authorities in Catalonia, Spain. To do this, the paper critically examines the linguistic model of language in education and the public debate that its introduction generated, focusing on three themes: immersion, translanguaging, and school autonomy. The model, which acknowledges cultural diversity and values plurilingualism, would appear to embrace developments in the field of multi/plurilingual research, although there have been disparate interpretations of the policy. But this case also represents the "politics of innovation", that is, the invocation of international educational trends for political purposes. In the input-output literature, structural decomposition analysis (SDA) has largely been used to disentangle changes in key variables over time. This paper uses the demand-driven input-output model and proposes a simple method to decompose the changes in energy gross output into different determinants. Specifically, the total changes in energy output are divided into two elements: technological changes, showing the effects of changing the technological coefficients of the input-output model, and structural changes, showing the effects of changing the final demand components. In addition, technological changes are divided into production effects, capturing the impacts of modifying the intermediate purchases of sectors, the substitution effects, capturing the impacts of modifying the selling structure, and the mixed effects, capturing the impacts of changes in total intermediate relations. The empirical application, which is for the Spanish region of Catalonia, uses two input-output tables that cover an entire decade (2001 and 2011). The results show a positive contribution of technology to increasing energy output, while the contribution of the final demand for energy is negative. In addition, the various energy activities exert a different repercussion on energy gross output changes. This highlights the importance of using detailed methods in the study of energy issues. Most of the adverse weather phenomena in Catalonia (northeast Iberian Peninsula) are caused by convective events, which can produce heavy rains, large hailstones, strong winds, lightning and/or tornadoes. These thunderstorms usually have marked paths. However, their trajectories can vary sharply at any given time, completely changing direction from the path they have previously followed. Furthermore, some thunderstorms split or merge with each other, creating new formations with different behaviour. In order to identify the potentially anomalous movements that some thunderstorms make, this paper presents a two-step methodology using a database with 8 years of daily rainfall fields data for the Catalonia region (2008–2015). First, it classifies daily rainfall fields between days with “no rain”, “non-potentially convective rain” and “potentially convective rain”, based on daily accumulated precipitation and extension thresholds. Second, it categorises convective structures within rainfall fields and briefly identifies their main features, distinguishing whether there were any anomalous thunderstorm movements in each case. This methodology has been applied to the 2008–2015 period, and the main climatic features of convective and non-convective days were obtained. The methodology can be exported to other regions that do not have the necessary radar-based algorithms to detect convective cells, but where there is a good rain gauge network in place. • Ostreopsis blooms are addressed with a coupled natural - human systems perspective. • Recurrent exposure to Ostreopsis blooms may have chronic effects on human health. • Beach monitoring and surveillance in summer effectively prevent human health. • Confirmed alert thresholds are 3·104 cells L-1 water or 2·105 cells·g FW-1 macroalgae. • Potential economic impacts of increasing Ostreopsis blooms cannot be projected yet. This paper summarizes the research conducted by the partners of the EU co-funded CoCliME project to ascertain the ecological, human health and economic impacts of Ostreopsis (mainly O. cf. ovata) blooms in the NW Mediterranean coasts of France, Monaco and Spain. This knowledge is necessary to design strategies to prevent, mitigate and, if necessary, adapt to the impacts of these events in the future and in other regions. Ostreopsis proliferations in the Mediterranean have been related to massive mortalities of benthic organisms and to symptoms of respiratory and cutaneous irritation in humans. A six-year epidemiologic study in a Ostreopsis hot spot in Catalonia and the accumulated experience of the French Mediterranean National Ostreopsis Surveillance Network confirm the main effects of these blooms on human health in the NW Mediterranean. The impacts are associated to direct exposure to seawater with high Ostreopsis cell concentrations and to inhalation of aerosols containing unknown irritative chemicals produced under certain circumstances during the blooms. A series of mild acute symptoms, affecting the entire body as well as the ophthalmic, digestive, respiratory and dermatologic systems have been identified. A main remaining challenge is to ascertain the effects of the chronic exposure to toxic Ostreopsis blooms. Still, the mechanisms involved in the deletereous effects of Ostreopsis blooms are poorly understood. Characterizing the chemical nature of the harmful compounds synthesized by Ostreopsis as well as the role of the mucus by which cells attach to benthic surfaces, requires new technical approaches (e.g., metabolomics) and realistic and standardized ecotoxicology tests. It is also necessary to investigate how palytoxin analogues produced by O. cf. ovata could be transferred through the marine food webs, and to evaluate the real risk of seafood poisonings in the area. On the other hand, the implementation of beach monitoring and surveillance systems in the summer constitutes an effective strategy to prevent the impacts of Ostreopsis on human health. In spite of the confirmed noxious effects, a survey of tourists and residents in Nice and Monaco to ascertain the socioeconomic costs of Ostreopsis blooms indicated that the occurrence of these events and their impacts are poorly known by the general public. In relationship with a plausible near future increase of Ostreopsis blooms in the NW Mediterranean coast, this survey showed that a substantial part of the population might continue to go to the beaches during Ostreopsis proliferations and thus could be exposed to health risks. In contrast, some people would not visit the affected areas, with the potential subsequent negative impacts on coastal recreational and touristic activities. However, at this stage, it is too early to accurately assess all the economic impacts that a potentially increasing frequency and biogeographic expansion of the events might cause in the future. In certain regions of Southern Europe, mature coastal resorts are currently coexisting with rural tourism areas several kilometers inland. This paper analyzes the inter-relationship of these two types of tourism and the conditions for sustaining both in Mediterranean destinations. To do so, common and uncommon characteristics of the tourist product in rural and mass tourism are identified. The case study focuses on the region of Catalonia, Spain. By applying a hedonic price model, the valuation of some traditional mass tourism characteristics in rural tourism is tested. The results show that rural and mass tourism in the region share several attributes, some of them with opposite effects. The general conclusion is that both types of tourism are compatible, but should be developed and promoted independently to preserve the attractiveness of the destination. Fifteen water flow-dependent ecosystem services (ES) are modelled for the case of the Ter (Catalonia, Spain), a river with persisting intra- and inter-basin conflicts on water flows. The aim is to analyse ES response (and ensuing social reaction) to changes in water flow management, in a context of several tradeoffs and synergies driven by access to water use. We argue for a new modelling approach to integrate diverse values and perspectives through engaging with stakeholders' concerns and claims. This is done under different conditions, including droughts, wet years, and different options for managing flows. Our approach involves two stages, namely water allocation modelling, including scenario development, and ES provision modelling, including participatory design of service suitability curves. The method presented allows analysing spatial/temporal patterns and ES performance. In this paper, a sensor data validation/reconstruction methodology applicable to water networks and its implementation by means of a software tool are presented. The aim is to guarantee that the sensor data are reliable and complete in case that sensor faults occur. The availability of such dataset is of paramount importance in order to successfully use the sensor data for further tasks e.g. water billing, network efficiency assessment, leak localization and real-time operational control. The methodology presented here is based on a sequence of tests and on the combined use of spatial models (SM) and time series models (TSM) applied to the sensors used for real-time monitoring and control of the water network. Spatial models take advantage of the physical relations between different system variables (e.g. flow and level sensors in hydraulic systems) while time series models take advantage of the temporal redundancy of the measured variables (here by means of a Holt–Winters (HW) time series model). First, the data validation approach, based on several tests of different complexity, is described to detect potential invalid or missing data. Then, the reconstruction process is based on a set of spatial and time series models used to reconstruct the missing/invalid data with the model estimation providing the best fit. A software tool implementing the proposed data validation and reconstruction methodology is also described. Politics in regions or countries with a salient ethno-regionalist cleavage take on a unique dynamic. In addition to ideological positioning on economic and social stances, centre-periphery issues add a third ideological dimension that needs to be acknowledged. Yet, electoral research has rarely given appropriate attention to these three ideological dimensions independently. This paper takes up this challenge by presenting a three-dimensional ideological model of vote choice. The three dimensions are each theoretically portrayed as having a determining and independent influence on voting. Using survey data from the Making Electoral Democracy Work project, we explore determinants of vote choice in recent sub-national elections in Catalonia and Quebec. This paper estimates effects of long-term care (LTC) benefits on utilization of primary and secondary healthcare in Catalonia (Spain). Identification comes from plausibly exogenous variation in the leniency of LTC needs assessment. We estimate that receiving LTC benefits worth 365 euros per month, on average, reduces the probability of avoidable hospital admissions by 66%, and has no significant effect on planned hospitalisations nor on hospitalisation for any reason. Receiving LTC benefits is estimated to reduce unscheduled primary care visits by 44% and has no significant effect on scheduled visits. These findings have important policy implications suggesting that allocating resources to LTC may not only increase the welfare of LTC beneficiaries but also reduce avoidable and unscheduled utilisation of healthcare. This article analyses two long-lived supercell thunderstorms formed on 11th May 2017 afternoon in a complex topographic area in northern Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula). The objectives of this paper are (i) to document a case study that affected a mountainous region in the southern side of the Pyrenees, (ii) to describe thermodynamic and dynamic environmental conditions, (iii) to study how the topography affects the life cycle of both storm cells and (iv) to demonstrate the high correlation between Lightning Jump and radar parameters in complex terrain. ERA5 reanalysis was used to assess the synoptic framework and environmental storm conditions, whereas remote-sensing data (Doppler radar, satellite and lightning observations) and terrain characteristics were considered to study the evolution of both cells. Reanalysis data revealed some differences between preconvective environments for both thunderstorms, showing more favourable conditions for supporting supercells (i.e. stronger deep-layer shear) for the first thunderstorm than for the second one. The analysis suggests substantial interaction between topography and storm cells, influencing their internal dynamics and the development of mesocyclones. The results of this study contribute to enhance our understanding of supercell storms evolution on mountain areas and may be useful to increase the situational awareness of weather forecasters in future similar convective storm events over complex terrain regions. • Supercells rarely occur in the Pyrenees and its surrounding area, and few cases have been reported. • The event shows an extraordinary case with two probable supercells in few hours. • Remote sensing and NWP fields show many supercell signatures, although the ground registers lack makes difficult to confirm. • There were many differences between both supercells, although the track and the environment were similar. • The topography played a significant role in the life cycle of the supercells in the thunderstorm scale. This article illustrates how students' ‘funds of identity’ can be used pedagogically to enrich the ‘funds of knowledge’ approach. The concept ‘funds of identity’ emphasizes students' interests through the incorporation of their creative works within the pedagogical space conducted by the teacher. Students invest their identities in the creation of some artifacts, which become educational resources used by teachers in class to affirm students' identities and foster their academic development. The paper shows how a teaching unit using the funds of identity approach is created and discusses about the significance of working through study groups for teacher development. This paper examines the adoption of environmental practices in small and medium sized companies in the surface mining industry in Catalonia (Spain). To fulfill this aim, a survey of 41 items concerning environmental management systems and environmentally sustainable practices has been conducted. Results show that companies have committed themselves to environmental and sustainable issues. The majority of companies claim to understand the effects of their activities on the environment and they care for responsible access and management of natural resources. Restoration plans and the annual waste declaration are mandatory in Catalonia, and rational resources exploitation practices have been adopted by a high percentage of mines. In this paper, the implementation of effective waste management practices in construction projects and sites is analyzed, using data from a survey answered by 74 Spanish construction companies based in Catalonia. Most commonly implemented practices were found to be on-site cleanliness and order, correct storage of raw materials, and prioritization of the nearest authorized waste managers. The least widespread practices were the use of a mobile crusher on site, the creation of individualized drawings for each construction site, and the dissemination of the contents of the waste management plan to all workers, to help them to meet its requirements. Waste regulations for construction and demolition, and the corresponding construction waste management facilities, were designed before the recession in the Spanish construction sector. Current waste generation rates are still below predicted levels, and the infrastructure was designed for five times more waste generation. Even so, the percentage of reused and recycled waste currently amounts to 43%. Survey respondents highlighted various instruments and measures that would make the management of construction and demolition waste more sustainable. Most of the opportunities identified by construction firms are within the scope of government and related to a combined system of bonus and penalties and the establishment of environmental awareness and training programmes for all the stakeholders. Within the scope of authorized waste managers, firms suggested improvements such as the standardization of fees, a reduction of the time until the issue of waste management certificates, a higher number of inspections, and a change in the current model of a few large construction waste management facilities. This research is useful to better understand the current status of construction and demolition waste management in construction projects and sites. Thus, the results of this research will guide policy makers and relevant stakeholders such as contractors, clients, architects and engineers to achieve the EU target of recovering 70% of construction and demolition waste in 2020. Synopsis In this paper we critically analyze the genealogy of the adoption of SRH R approaches in Catalonia. The reflections are based on a two-stage research project carried out within the Catalan Sexual and Reproductive Health Program (PASSIR). The main finding of the first part of our inquiry is a clear gap between discourse and practice. While the PASSIR design appears to incorporate the SRH R paradigm, the service is still targeting heterosexual women of reproductive age and mostly adopting a medical approach. Furthermore, as shown in the second part, the data analyzed evidence that the discourse of achieved transformation is far from being consolidated. In fact, the new Spanish and Catalan governments' turn to the right in conjunction with the austerity policies related to the global crisis seems to question the whole basis of the SRH R approach. The present paper shows an in-depth analysis of the evolution of floods and precipitation in Catalonia for the period 1981–2010. In order to have homogeneous information, and having in mind that not gauge data was available for all the events, neither for all the rivers and stream flows, daily press from a specific newspaper has been systematically analysed for this period. Furthermore a comparison with a longer period starting in 1900 has been done. 219 flood events (mainly flash flood events) have been identified for the period of 30 years (375 starting in 1900), 79 of them were ordinary, 117 of them were extraordinary and 23 of them were catastrophic, being autumn and summer the seasons with the maxima values. 19% of the events caused a total of 110 casualties. 60% of them died when they tried to cross the street or the stream. Factors like the evolution of precipitation, population density and other socio-economical aspects have been considered. The trend analysis shows an increase of 1 flood/decade that probably has been mainly due to inter-annual and intra-annual changes in population density and in land-use and land-cover. Background: Over the last two decades, the rise in opioid prescription has worsened health outcomes worldwide, increasing both levels of abuse and mortality rates. In order to reduce the scale of this public health problem, new policies have been implemented in many countries. In 2012, Spain adopted new legislation on opioid prescription (the ROE law), which meant that practitioners no longer needed to obtain extra authorisation in order to prescribe strong opioids. The objective of the paper is to assess the impact of this law on opioid use and abuse in Catalonia, Spain.Methods: We established two measures of the use of strong and weak opioids: DDDs, and abuse. We used benzodiazepines and antidepressants as controls, and adjusted for age, sex, drug co-payment level, death or near death, cancer diagnosis, morbidity group, and type of prescription. The data were obtained from administrative and dispensing drug databases in a population of 7.5 million inhabitants. We estimated two-way fixed effects using difference in difference models.Results: The ROE law impacted reducing the monthly use of strong opioids by 0.903 DDDs, representing a 3.15% decrease in the mean monthly use of strong opioids. However, abuse rose 1.86 times compared with the average pre-ROE value, which represents an increase of 11,190 months of opioid abuse (i.e., an 11.33% of all monthly opioids use).Conclusion: The abolition of the duplicate prescription programme for strong opioids led to a reduction in the average monthly use of strong opioids, but an increase in abuse. Osonachelus decorata nov. gen., nov. sp., is the first named chelonioid turtle from the Iberian Peninsula. This Eocene turtle was found in the marine sediments of the Vespella Marls Member (Vic-Manlleu Marls Formation, upper Bartonian) that occur in the Osona county (eastern Ebro Basin, Province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain). The area is rich in invertebrate, fish, and plant fossils but various vertebrates, including several chelonian taxa, have remained unpublished. This paper is the first dedicated to the fossil turtles of this area. Osonachelus nov. gen. is a large turtle with an impressive, massive skull revealing a specialized diet, a large and well-fenestrated shell (well ornamented dorsally and much lightened ventrally), and large paddles for high-sea locomotion. It is phylogenetically located among relatively advanced cheloniids, just basal to modern forms. Although apparent similarities in shell morphology exist with Allopleuron from the Maastrichtian of Holland, Osonachelus nov. gen. is distinct due to its masticatory apparatus, less usual among cheloniids and seemingly closer to that of the Lutetian Eochelone from Belgium. Based on the deeply concave and smooth lower jaw symphysis, its diet probably consisted of soft animals or plants rather than hard-food items. Therefore, it occupied a specialized ecological niche that is unique for the Eocene of the Iberian Peninsula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Pesticide contamination of groundwater is of paramount importance because it is the most sensitive and the largest body of freshwater in the European Union. In this paper, an isotopic dilution method based on on-line solid phase extraction–liquid chromatography (electrospray)–tandem mass spectrometry (SPE–LC(ESI)–MS/MS) was used for the analysis of 22 pesticides in groundwater. Results were evaluated from monitoring 112 wells and piezometers coming from 29 different aquifers located in 18 ground water bodies (GWBs), from Catalonia, Spain, for 4years as part of the surveillance and operational monitoring programs conducted by the Catalan Water Agency. The analytical method developed allows the determination of the target pesticides (6 triazines, 4 phenylureas, 4 organophosphorous, 1 anilide, 2 chloroacetanilides, 1 thiocarbamate, and 4 acid herbicides) in groundwater with good sensitivity (limits of detection <5ng/L), accuracy (relative recoveries between 85 and 116%, except for molinate), and repeatability (RSD<23%), and in a fully automated way. The most ubiquitous compounds were simazine, atrazine, desethylatrazine and diuron. Direct relation between frequency of detection of each target compound and Groundwater Ubiquity Score index (GUS index) is observed. Desethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine, metabolites of atrazine and simazine, respectively, presented the highest mean concentrations. Compounds detected in less than 5% of the samples were cyanazine, molinate, fenitrothion and mecoprop. According to the Directive 2006/118/EC, 13 pesticides have individual values above the requested limits (desethylatrazine, atrazine and terbuthylazine lead the list) and 14 samples have total pesticide levels above 500ng/L. The GWB with the highest levels of total pesticides is located in Lleida (NE-Spain), with 9 samples showing total pesticide levels above 500ng/L. Several factors such as regulation of the use of pesticides, type of activities in the area, and irrigation were discussed in relation to the observed levels of pesticides. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Projecting forest dynamics as a function of alternative management strategies and climatic conditions is key to develop sound forest policy and management planning. In Spain there is a need for a full set of climate-sensitive individual-tree growth and yield models suitable for country-level simulations. In this paper we present environmentally driven models for forest stand dynamics based on distance-independent individual-tree growth and yield. The data for model calibration are based on the second, third and fourth surveys of the Spanish National Forest Inventory, including 50,359 plots and 838,620 trees, representing a broad gradient in forest types and environmental conditions. The results develop a total of 182 models for diameter increment, height increment, total height, survival and ingrowth for 27 species and species groups. The models are integrated into a full forest projection system to perform simulations of forest dynamics and resulting changes in the provision of ecosystem services, including the effects of climate, and forest management. Its potential is illustrated through an array of simulations of forest dynamics in the region of Catalonia under alternative climatic and management scenarios. The resulting models and projections provide a solid basis for the simulation of national or regional climate-sensitive forest scenarios, with the possibility of being applied to other regions, and may be used for future management and planning efforts. Intensive livestock production has a negative environmental impact by producing large amounts of animal dejections, which, if not properly managed, can contaminate nearby water bodies with nutrient excess. However, if the animal manure could be transferred efficiently to nearby crops and used as a fertilizer for the plants, pollution/contamination would be mitigated, transforming manure from a waste to a resource. This valorization of manure from waste to a resource falls within the circular economy principles, but the transportation of manure also comes at an environmental and economic cost. It is a single-objective optimization problem regarding finding the best solution for the logistics process of satisfying nutrient crops needs through livestock manure. This paper uses a centralized optimal algorithm (COA) to solve the problem, based on a realistic simulator that considers numerous real-world constraints that related work has not yet addressed. Implementation and evaluation of this method have been carried out based on extensive geolocalized data from Catalonia (Spain), one of the densest European farming regions, as a case study. Abstract: The separation of biowaste at home is key to improving, facilitating and reducing the operational costs of the treatment of organic municipal waste. The conventional method of collecting such waste and separating it at home is usually done by using a sealed bin with a plastic bag. The use of modern compostable bags is starting to be implemented in some European countries. These compostable bags are made of biodegradable polymers, often from renewable sources. In addition to compostable bags, a new model of bin is also promoted that has a perforated surface that, together with the compostable bag, makes the so-called “aerated system”. In this study, different combinations of home collection systems have been systematically studied in the laboratory and at home. The results obtained quantitatively demonstrate that the aerated bin and compostable bag system combination is effective at improving the collection of biowaste without significant gaseous emissions and preparing the organic waste for further composting as concluded from the respiration indices. In terms of weight loss, temperature, gas emissions, respiration index and organic matter reduction, the best results were achieved with the aerated system. Abstract: A method for the determination of five polyether ionophores in urban sewage sludge has been developed. The extraction of compounds was performed by pressurised liquid extraction using acetone, while florisil was used for in-cell clean-up to minimise the matrix effect in the sludge extracts. An amide polar-embedded reversed-phase column was used for the chromatographic separation with a rapid-resolution liquid chromatograph coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer. Moreover, several clean-up strategies such as in-cell and on-cell clean-up and solid-phase extraction clean-up, among others, were tested and their results are discussed in the present paper. Recoveries (10 and 250μg/kg in dry weight (d.w.), n =6) were close to 90%, repeatability and reproducibility (%RSD, 10 and 250μg/kg (d.w.), n =6) were less than 10% and12%, respectively. Limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged between 0.5 and 1μg/kg (d.w.) and between 1 and 5μg/kg (d.w.), respectively. Abstract: There has been a growing literature on alternative food networks (AFNs); structures that reconfigure the systems of production, distribution and consumption of food. Part of this literature emphasises the local scale and the idea of proximity. In a world that is increasingly urban, AFNs at a local scale can be more easily developed by linking peri-urban farmlands and cities. However, agriculture in the rural–urban fringe struggles to survive in the face of urban pressures and sprawl; a process which undermines viable agricultural production in the city''s countryside. A widely used strategy to address these pressures has been farmland protection, undertaken in different ways depending on the legal framework of particular countries. This paper considers farmland conservation and AFNs development issues through a case-study of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park (BLAP) in metropolitan Barcelona. It concludes that AFNs in peri-urban areas are only possible if farmland preservation is guaranteed, and that the former does not come as a direct consequence of the latter. Abstract: This paper shows a study to find out which technology proves to be the most sustainable to use to build schools in a place where an important shortage of this type of buildings exists. This study searches for the architectural technology which has the least economic, environmental and social impact to solve the need for the urgent construction of hundreds of educational centers in Catalonia, Spain, in the early 2000s. The Integrated Value Model for Sustainable Assessment (Modelo Integrado de Valor para una Evaluación Sostenible – MIVES) has been used in this research to generate a dynamic assessment tool which has been optimized for this case study. To that end exclusively the most significant and discriminatory indicators have been considered: timeframes, initial and maintenance cost; waste, emissions and energy consumption by different life cycle phases; safety, edifice enlargements and function changes… MIVES is a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) which includes the value function concept and relies upon seminars by experts. Assigning weights and value functions during these workshops brings rigor and objectivity to the assessment. The resulting tool has been tested analyzing 4 technologies: on site concrete, prefabricated concrete, prefabricated steel and prefabricated timber; in order to obtain their sustainability indexes. This tool has proven very useful assessing these technologies and will also be helpful during decision making processes to choose which technology should be used to build the most sustainable school center. Abstract: Energy consumption in buildings accounts for a significant percentage of total world energy utilization. Great efforts have been made in order to reduce fossil energy consumption and mitigate its depletion by means of energy efficiency directives. The national transposition of such directives generates regional regulations that might be counterproductive if it is not clear which one is more restrictive. The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the potential of energetic savings of the dwellings in Catalonia and its economic impact, according to different scenarios of efficiency that have been defined according to current regulations at state and autonomic level. To achieve this objective, thirteen typologies of dwellings have been defined in order to categorize the stock of buildings in Catalonia. Simulations with LIDER software have been carried out in order to obtain the heating and cooling demand for each typology of dwelling in different climatic zones and orientations. The economic impact of each scenario has been stated as well. We show that the best normative scenario is not the regional but the national one, and only when full limitations imposed by the state regulations are fulfilled. Following the latter 6.4% reduction in CO2 emissions would be achieved, whereas following the former gives us only 2.8% reduction for year 2015. This paper assesses whether economic voting plays any role in a parliamentary, decentralized polity. Decentralization is argued to blur lines of responsibility and confuse voters about whom to blame for poor economic performance at the national and regional levels. National and Regional Economic Voting (NEV and REV, respectively) are tested in Catalonia (Spain). The initial empirical test suggests that only NEV takes place in this region. Four hypotheses are considered to explain REV’s absence: blame-shifting, blinding nationalism, coalition government, and misinformation regarding Policy Responsibility Distribution across tiers of government. Using reasonable counterfactuals and Bayesian techniques, the first three hypotheses are dismissed, whereas the last is confirmed. Abstract: In this paper we investigate how schoolmates influence high school dropout intentions in Catalonia, Spain. Our analysis uses self-reported friends to identify possible peers by assuming that peer influence flows in one direction in cases where one student identifies another as a friend, but the other does not reciprocate. We first estimate the effects of education aspirations of non-reciprocating friends on students’ own education aspirations, with and without conditioning on a large set of personality and cognitive characteristics. We then investigate the extent to which the estimated effects are associated with friends’ height, weight, BMI, gender and cognitive ability. The estimated impact of non-reciprocating peers’ dropout intentions is small and generally not statistically significant: a 10 percentage point increase in the fraction of non-reciprocating peers that intend to drop out increases students’ chances of dropping out by about .2 percentage points.
