The COVID-19 vaccine coverage among children in countries where COVID-19 vaccines are recommended has been suboptimal. Conflicting information in the media leads to parental anxiety and confusion around COVID-19 vaccination in children. The scepticism expressed by certain experts regarding the importance of COVID-19 vaccines in children has also had a negative impact on parental attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination. This study aimed to understand parental concerns and preferences for paediatric COVID-19 vaccination, and identify potential vaccination promotion ("nudge") interventions to optimise paediatric COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Mixed methods including Focus Group Discussions and a Discrete Choice Experiment survey were used. The Discrete Choice Experiment survey design was based on a literature review and the findings of Focus Group Discussions. The study was conducted on a nationally representative sample of parents in Australia. In total, 1039 parents participated in the study. Parents showed strong preferences for a COVID-19 vaccine with lower risk of serious side effects and longer protection duration, followed by higher vaccine effectiveness and delivery via oral tablets. Promotion strategies were similarly preferred by parents. Latent class logit analysis identified three groups, interpretable as COVID-19 vaccine "accepters (35.3%)", "deliberators (31.7%)", and "rejecters (33.1%)". The "deliberators" composed of more parents, residing in metropolitan areas, having concerns about vaccine effectiveness, and believing that disease risks outweigh vaccine benefits than the "accepters". The "rejecters" were more likely to not be vaccinated themselves, and generally have less trust in vaccines than the "accepters". The "deliberators" and "rejecters" were less likely to be parents aged ≥25 years and complete final year of high school than the "accepters". Parents' sociodemographic factors and vaccine perceptions were associated with different levels of acceptance toward paediatric COVID-19 vaccination, which may help to better understand how to "nudge" vaccine hesitancy. • We ran a cross-sectional population study on the changes in cannabis-related attitudes of Australian parents from 2016 to 2019. • The estimated proportion of parents who supported legalisation and approved regular cannabis use increased significantly. • Parents who would try cannabis if it was legal grew from 5.9 % (95 %CI: 5.2, 6.7) to 8.1 % (95 %CI: 7.2, 9.0). • Parents who said they would use cannabis more often increased 81% over the three years. • The strongest associations were observed between high levels of psychological distress and regular smoking and drinking. With recent policy changes around medicinal cannabis in Australia, there is concern about the influence of changing norms of cannabis use on adults who are actively parenting. This repeated cross-sectional population study used National and Drug Strategy and Household Surveys to estimate the changes and correlates of cannabis-related attitudes (support of legalisation, approve of regular use, would try or use if legal) among Australian parents from 2016 to 2019. The estimated proportion of parents who supported legalisation and approved regular cannabis use increased significantly. Parents who would try cannabis if it was legal grew from 5.9% (95 %CI: 5.2, 6.7) to 8.1% (95 %CI: 7.2, 9.0). Parents who said they would use cannabis more often increased from 1.6 (95 % CI: 1.2, 1.9) to 2.9 (95 %CI: 2.4, 3.4), an 81% jump in the three years. The strongest associations were observed between a very high level of psychological distress and regular smoking and drinking. For example, people with a very high level of psychological distress were 2.16 times (95 %CI: 1.42, 3.28) and 2.48 times (95 %CI: 1.61, 3.83) more likely to approve legalisation and regular cannabis use, respectively. Daily drinking was associated with higher odds of trying cannabis (OR = 1.66; CI: 1.25–2.20). The proportion of parents who would try or use cannabis more often represents a sizeable pool of potential new and frequent users. This highlights the need for education and intervention strategies for parents who use cannabis and care for young children. A limited body of empirical evidence suggests a strong sense of cultural identity promotes wellbeing and other socio-economic outcomes for First Nations people, including for Indigenous Australians. A challenge to this evidence is potential endogeneity: that Indigenous people who achieve positive outcomes are then more likely to maintain and engage in their traditional culture. Data from Australia's Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children were used to address that challenge. Indigenous parents' attitudes and practices with respect to passing on traditional culture to their children in early childhood were related to children's later health and socio-emotional adjustment. Exploratory factor analysis identified three key elements of parental transmission of Indigenous culture to their children: connection to country, connection to kin and traditional knowledge. Parents fostering a strong kinship connection was found to contribute to positive child development. Positive effects of connection to country and parental desires to pass on traditional knowledge were also identified in some regional contexts, providing further evidence that traditional Indigenous cultures should be seen as a resource for addressing Indigenous disadvantage, not a contributing factor. The research design eliminates the possibility of (the child's) outcomes 'causing' greater cultural identity or engagement, but not the possibility of omitted variables shaping both parents' practices toward cultural engagement and child outcomes. Abstract The purpose of this paper is to highlight how commonalities and differences between Australian children, parents and practitioners in terms of how they understand child resilience could inform the design and delivery of initiatives that aim to promote child resilience. A qualitative analysis of data from focus groups with children (n = 44), parents (n = 42) and practitioners (n = 107) undertaken in six Australian states and territories found key differences between the three groups in terms of: what they think resilience looks like in a child; and the factors that influence child resilience. The analysis also found a common agreement about the importance of supportive relationships to children's resilience. The findings suggest that initiatives that aim to promote child resilience may be more engaging and useful to children and parents if they: educate parents about the factors that influence child resilience; communicate the aims of resilience interventions to parents and children; focus on building supportive relationships for children; and explore community attitudes towards risk-taking. Abstract Rationale Childhood vaccination is a safe and effective way of reducing infectious diseases. Yet, public confidence in vaccination is waning, driven in part by the 'manufacture of doubt' by anti-vaccination activists and websites. However, there is little research examining the psychological underpinnings of anti-vaccination rhetoric among parents. Objectives Here, we examined the structure and moral roots of anti-vaccination attitudes amongst Australian parents active on social media parenting sites. Methods Participants (N = 296) completed questionnaires assessing their vaccination attitudes, behavioural intentions, and moral preferences. Results Using Latent Profile Analysis, we identified three profiles (i.e., groups), interpretable as vaccine "accepters", "fence sitters", and "rejecters", each characterised by a distinct pattern of vaccination attitudes and moral preferences. Accepters exhibited positive vaccination attitudes and strong intentions to vaccinate; rejecters exhibited the opposite pattern of responses; whilst fence sitters exhibited an intermediate pattern of responses. Compared to accepters, rejecters and fence sitters exhibited a heightened moral preference for liberty (belief in the rights of the individual) and harm (concern about the wellbeing of others). Compared to acceptors and fence sitters, rejecters exhibited a heightened moral preference for purity (an abhorrence for impurity of body), and a diminished moral preference for authority (deference to those in positions of power). Conclusion Given the sensitivity of fence sitters and rejecters to liberty-related moral concerns, our research cautions against the use of adversarial approaches—e.g., No Jab, No Pay legislation—that promote vaccination uptake by restricting parental freedoms, as they may backfire amongst parents ambivalent toward vaccination. Childhood injury is the largest cause of paediatric hospitalisation in Australia. Parents' psychological wellbeing is important in enabling them to support their children's recovery, however little is known about parents' psychosocial support needs during their child's admission to the emergency department. This study explores the experiences and support needs of parents of critically injured children in the emergency department. An exploratory qualitative approach was used. Semi-structured face to face interviews were conducted with 40 parents of 30 critically injured children aged 0–12 years across 4 Australian hospitals. Transcribed data were managed using NVivo 10 and qualitative content analysis was performed. Four themes of parent experience emerged from analysis: being in shock and distress; feeling challenged by the ed environment; dealing with urgent priorities; and having immediate needs met. There is a need for easy-to-understand information for parents in the ED following their child's injury. Recommendations include use of a checklist for emergency clinicians on what information to provide parents and provision of anticipatory guidance to parents on what to expect psychologically following injury. Abstract Objective To investigate the patterns and the determinants of mental health service use by children and adolescents in Australia. Method Data from Young Minds Matter (YMM): The Second Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing is used in this study. YMM is a face-to-face household survey conducted in 2013–2014 that collected information from 6310 parents/carers of children aged 4–17 years (55% of eligible households). A self-reported survey of 2967 (89% of eligible youth) 11- to 17-year-olds from these households was also conducted. Bivariate analyses are used in this study to examine the variables and their distributions over the outcome variables. Binary logit models are used to investigate the determinants of mental health service use. Results Parent reported data shows that among children aged 4–17 years, 12%, 1.2% and 0.6% utilised health services, school services and telephone services, respectively. Youth reported data reveals that approximately 7.2%, 2% and 4% and 23.5% of children aged 11–17 years used health services, school services, telephone services and online services, respectively. Youth reported data further shows that online services were the most popular type of mental health service among adolescents. Those with anxiety or ADHD constituted the highest proportion of children that used any type of mental health services. Logistic analysis of parent reported data shows that children from step, blended and sole-parent households compared to original parent households were more likely to use any type of mental health service, and the same trend was seen for children living in inner regional areas compared to those living in major cities. Children of parents with lower education or unemployed parents were also more likely to utilise health services. Conclusion From the findings, it is concluded that age-relevant mental health services should be improved and made available for children and adolescents. Secondly, school and health services should have a particular focus on complex disorders like ADHD, anxiety and conduct disorders, as these are the services most used by children who suffer from these conditions. Finally, areas of low socio-economic status should focus on improving their school and health services as these are the services used most by children from these backgrounds. • Family inclusion in child protection is a critical but unrealised aim in Australia. • Parents who have had children removed from their care feel powerless and voiceless. • Parents seek collaboration and meaningful roles in their children's lives. • Parents' advocacy and passion can be reconceptualised as an asset for inclusion. The inclusion of families throughout the child protection process can improve lifelong outcomes for children who have been removed from their parents' care. However, child protection authorities have struggled to prioritize principles of family inclusion within systems that position families as risky. While parents' experiences of powerlessness within child protection systems have been well documented, little is known about parents' perspectives on family inclusion specifically. We engaged six parents who had experienced removal of children from their care in interviews and focus groups as part of a larger study that examined practitioners', carers', lawyers' and parents' views on family inclusion in Australia. In this article we report on parents' experiences and recommendations for improving family inclusion. Through the analytical framework of Foucauldian concepts of power, knowledge and acts of resistance we highlight the complexities of parents' lives and intersections in their experiences of systemic and social exclusion. In identifying the importance of collaboration, decision making and parental identity these findings suggest that the advocacy of parents for inclusion in the lives of their children is an underutilized asset in child protection systems. Neighbourhood-level factors can exert unique influence on children's development, independent of individual parent, child, and family factors. We investigated the contribution of neighbourhood socioeconomic status (using government-generated definitions) to directly-observed parent–child interactions among 596 Australian parents and their 7–8-year-old children. Parents' sensitive responding and parent–child positive mutuality were rated according to the SCARP:7 – 8 Years (Short Coding of Attachment-Related Parenting). Adjusting for individual family characteristics, multilevel modelling revealed evidence of an association between neighbourhood socioeconomic status and sensitive responding (β =.10, p=.004) but not for parent–child positive mutuality (β =−.01, p =.90). Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parental involvement in youth sport is largely unknown. The objective of the study presented in this paper was to understand parental involvement in relation to their child's participation in organised sport during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an interpretive descriptive methodology, online qualitative interviews and online focus groups with parents and youth (15–18 years) (n = 29) were conducted during June 2020. Following a rigorous reflexive thematic analysis, four themes illustrated the nature of sport parenting during this stressful and uncertain period: (a) reshaping sport parenting identity, (b) the unexpected growth of sport parenting responsibilities, (c) responding to children's loss of sport, and (d) policies impact family commitment and attitudes to returning to sport. The findings are discussed considering Harwood and Knight's (2015) postulates of parenting expertise in sport and offer potential ideas to better support parents and children situated in unexpectedly stressful situations. • Parents reshaped their sport identity during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. • Parents experienced a rapid and unexpected growth in responsibility as a sport parent. • Parental attunement and responsiveness to their children's needs was higher during lockdown. • Constant policy changes challenged parents' capacity to provide logistical support. Carers are at the frontline working with children in the care of the child protection system. This paper reports carer's views about key factors influencing the placement trajectories of children and young people living in out-of-home care in Queensland, Australia. The study sample included 21 foster and kinship carers with a minimum two-year experience in the carer role. Study data were from semi-structured telephone interviews in which carers shared their experiences of the factors impacting upon placement stability and placement movement. Carers' responses were analysed thematically. Data analysis yielded an overarching theme regarding placement trajectory: Carer engagement, and its three sub-themes; with the child; with the child protection system; and, with the caring role. Findings suggested that carer engagement and ‘fit’ are complex constructs that play critical influential roles in placement outcomes (stability or movement) for individual children in out-of-home care. Limited literature has examined parents' perceptions of children's pickiness in relation to all the five core food groups (vegetables, legumes/beans; fruits; dairy and alternatives; meat and alternatives; cereals), which is representative of a nutritionally balanced diet and critical for optimal growth and development in children. This study aimed to develop and validate two questionnaires in Australian-Indian mothers and children 7–12 years (N = 482). The core food Picky Eating Questionnaire (PEQ), completed by mothers, identified maternal perceptions of their child's pickiness. The Child-reported Food Preference Questionnaire (C-FPQ) studied children's self-reported food preferences. The questionnaires comprised specific food items commonly available in Australia across the five core food groups (PEQ, N = 32; C-FPQ, N = 33) and discretionary foods (C-FPQ, N = 11). Exploratory Factor Analysis identified the initial factor structure, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis provided construct validity. The PEQ observed five constructs, and C-FPQ observed three constructs for food items perceived as picky/non-preferred-green leafy vegetables; other vegetables, pulses/legumes; fruits; wholegrain/wholemeal cereals (PEQ only) and dairy (PEQ only). The PEQ and C-FPQ observed four constructs for food items perceived as not picky/preferred-green vegetables; other vegetables; fruits and nuts, and dairy. C-FPQ also observed savoury and sweet discretionary food constructs. All constructs observed acceptable reliability (test–retest, internal consistency) and validity (convergent, relative, predictive) testing. Mean scores indicated that mothers' perceptions of pickiness were positively correlated with their children's report of non-preference. In conclusion, this study pilot validated two questionnaires to examine maternal perceptions of pickiness and children's self-reported food preferences among Australian-Indians, Australia's largest ethnic community. Objective: Assess the effect of counter-advertisements on parents’ appraisals of unhealthy foods featuring front-of-package promotions (FOPPs). Design: A 2 × 2 × 5 between-subjects Web-based experiment. Parents were randomly shown an advertisement (counter-advertisement challenging FOPP/control advertisement) and then a pair of food products from the same category: an unhealthy product featuring an FOPP (nutrient content claim/sports celebrity endorsement) and a healthier control product with no FOPP. Setting: Australia. Participants: A total ot 1,269 Australian-based parents of children aged 5–12 years recruited from an online panel. Main Outcome Measures: Parents nominated which product they would prefer to buy and which they thought was healthier, then rated the unhealthy product and FOPP on various characteristics. Analysis: Differences between advertisement conditions were assessed using logistic regression (product choice tasks) and analysis of variance tests (ratings of unhealthy product and FOPP). Results. Compared with parents who saw a control advertisement, parents who saw a counter-advertisement perceived unhealthy products featuring FOPPs as less healthy, expressed weaker intentions for buying such products, and were more likely to read the nutrition facts panel before nominating choices (all P < .001). Conclusions and Implications: Counter-advertising may help reduce the misleading influence of unhealthy food marketing and improve the accuracy of parents’ evaluations of how nutritious promoted food products are. • Children often hold significant power around what food is purchased and eaten. • Eating habits of children can interfere with parents' well-intentioned plans. • Parents are conflicted with needing children to eat and their desire for healthy food. • Supermarkets encourage impulse buying by targeting children with appealing promotions. This study reports parents' perceptions about children's influence on the generation of household food by collecting qualitative data from 15 focus groups of Australian householders from five culturally diverse communities. Key findings include food over-purchase to some extent results from children applying pressure on their parents to impulse buy supermarkets promoted products, fussy eating behaviours, and frequently changing preferences. Children's selective eating behaviours and preferences also cause food over-preparation and over-provisioning by parents. This study also identified that campaigns promoting imperfect shaped fruit and vegetables tend to be less effective with children as they desire perfect shaped fresh produce. We also identified that migrant communities tend to face the added complication of balancing traditional food for adults with their children requesting Australian foods. Our research presents policy implications in identifying children as quiet powerhouses in Australian households and suggests the need for targeted interventions to change children's food behaviour. Additionally, parents need to mirror these interventions in their households to reinforce desired changes in their children's food behaviours. There is also an opportunity for supermarkets, local councils and government agencies to redesign their marketing campaigns to educate children and parents about reducing food waste. • Cultural and language needs of Vietnamese parents of children with a disability are poorly understood. • Disability workers need to consider how to support Vietnamese parents using a cultural safety approach. • Culturally and linguistically oriented support groups should be explored as a promising intervention to support ethnic minority parents in host countries. There are limited studies which investigate the perceived needs and wellbeing of parents caring for their children with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. This qualitative study uniquely explored the experiences and cultural factors of Vietnamese parents caring for children with a disability in multicultural Australia. The study recruited Vietnamese parents who were attending a culturally and linguistically oriented support group in Sydney. The Carers' and Users' Expectations of Services (Carer version) was used to examine the perspectives of the parents. The data were analysed thematically. Three main themes were found. First, Vietnamese parents wanted to obtain more information and support, and to be more involved and better engaged with the treatment plan of their children with disability. They were currently receiving inadequate information and faced language and structural barriers in attaining help. Second, they experienced complex and multiple needs such as social isolation, financial problems and limited caring choices. Third, they received significant emotional and social support from their support group, showing the benefits of providing culturally and linguistically oriented support groups. Service providers need to consider the needs of Vietnamese parents with children with disabilities holistically and aim to address those needs within a complex health and social care context. Disability workers should adopt cultural safety in their practice to support parents and children from ethnic minority groups. Abstract: This study investigated parents’ attitudes, knowledge and behaviours relating to safe child occupant travel following new Australian legislation regarding child restraint system (CRS) and motor vehicle restraint use for children aged 7 years and under. A questionnaire exploring attitudes, knowledge and behaviours regarding general road safety, as well as safe child occupant travel, was completed by 272 participants with at least one child aged between 3 and 10 years residing in the Australian state of Victoria. Responses to the questionnaire revealed that participants’ attitudes, knowledge and behaviours towards road safety in general were fairly positive, with most participants reporting that they restrict their alcohol consumption or do not drink at all while driving (87%), drive at or below the speed limit (85%) and ‘always’ wear their seatbelts (98%). However, more than half of the participants reported engaging in distracting behaviours ‘sometimes’ or ‘often’ (54%) and a small proportion of participants indicated that they ‘sometimes’ engaged in aggressive driving (14%). Regarding their attitudes, knowledge and behaviours relating to safe child occupant travel, most participants reported that they ‘always’ restrain their children (99%). However, there was a surprisingly high proportion of participants who did not know the appropriate age thresholds’ to transition their child from a booster seat to an adult seatbelt (53%) or the age for which it is appropriate for their child to sit in the front passenger seat of the vehicle (20%). Logistic regression analyses revealed that parents’ knowledge regarding safe child occupant travel was significantly related to their attitudes, knowledge and behaviours towards road safety in general, such as drinking habits while driving and CRS safety knowledge. Based on the findings of this study, a number of recommendations are made for strategies to enhance parents’ attitudes, knowledge and behaviours relating to safe child occupant travel, as well as for future research. Abstract: Background: Support and education for parents faced with managing a child with atopic dermatitis is crucial to the success of current treatments. Interventions aiming to improve parent management of this condition are promising. Unfortunately, evaluation is hampered by lack of precise research tools to measure change. Objectives: To develop a suite of valid and reliable research instruments to appraise parents’ self-efficacy for performing atopic dermatitis management tasks; outcome expectations of performing management tasks; and self-reported task performance in a community sample of parents of children with atopic dermatitis. Methods: The Parents’ Eczema Management Scale (PEMS) and the Parents’ Outcome Expectations of Eczema Management Scale (POEEMS) were developed from an existing self-efficacy scale, the Parental Self-Efficacy with Eczema Care Index (PASECI). Each scale was presented in a single self-administered questionnaire, to measure self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and self-reported task performance related to managing child atopic dermatitis. Each was tested with a community sample of parents of children with atopic dermatitis, and psychometric evaluation of the scales’ reliability and validity was conducted. Setting and participants: A community-based convenience sample of 120 parents of children with atopic dermatitis completed the self-administered questionnaire. Participants were recruited through schools across Australia. Results: Satisfactory internal consistency and test–retest reliability was demonstrated for all three scales. Construct validity was satisfactory, with positive relationships between self-efficacy for managing atopic dermatitis and general perceived self-efficacy; self-efficacy for managing atopic dermatitis and self-reported task performance; and self-efficacy for managing atopic dermatitis and outcome expectations. Factor analyses revealed two-factor structures for PEMS and PASECI alike, with both scales containing factors related to performing routine management tasks, and managing the child''s symptoms and behaviour. Factor analysis was also applied to POEEMS resulting in a three-factor structure. Factors relating to independent management of atopic dermatitis by the parent, involving healthcare professionals in management, and involving the child in the management of atopic dermatitis were found. Parents’ self-efficacy and outcome expectations had a significant influence on self-reported task performance. Conclusions: Findings suggest that PEMS and POEEMS are valid and reliable instruments worthy of further psychometric evaluation. Likewise, validity and reliability of PASECI was confirmed. This study investigates the transnational experiences of young Taiwanese-background children living in Australia, who sojourn to their parents' homeland during the school holidays to improve their linguistic and cultural skills, as reported by their mothers. Although this appears to be a frequent practice in the Taiwanese diaspora, showcasing the agency of this community, little research has systematically investigated this practice, and in particular its impact on the children and their families. Data for this study were obtained through online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with mothers who engage in this practice, to gather information on family histories and participants' backgrounds, family language policies, and parents' perceptions of children's experiences and challenges. The data show that parents aim to enhance their children's proficiency levels in the home language as well as their Taiwanese identity. Children, however, take an agentive role with regard to identity choices, so parents' aims are not always fulfilled. Sojourning is presented as a clear example not only of enacted family language policy, but also as an explicit management practice, positioning the Taiwanese diaspora within both their new as well as their old homeland. Sociological contributions on digital health have acknowledged the enduring significance of sensory work in diagnosis and practices of care. Previous explorations of these digital and sensory entanglements have focused separately on healthcare providers or patients/caregivers, rarely bringing these worlds together. Our analysis, based on the collation of ethnographic fieldwork in clinics, medical schools, and homes in Australia, offers rare insights into caregiver and practitioner perspectives. We interrogate the work involved in digital-sensory becoming, as caregivers (in our case parents) learn to assign diagnostic meaning to potential childhood disease. Working with Karen Barad's concept of 'intra-action', we demonstrate how diagnostic knowing is enacted between practitioners, parents, senses, and devices. We identify seven aspects of digital-sensory learning: attention to the change from normal; testing/searching for signs and symptoms; confirmation and direction from more experienced others; mimicry; analogy/metaphor; digital archiving; and reference to validated digitised signs. We found that this learning does not take place discretely in the clinic or at home. Doctors and parents both do digital-sensory work to register, co-witness, and mutually enact disease by interpreting signs and symptoms together in their caregiving intra-actions. Recent research illuminates the characteristics of non-vaccinating parents in well-defined geographic communities, however the process by which they came to reject vaccines is less clearly understood. Between September 11th, 2017 and February 20th, 2019, we recruited a nationally derived sample of Australian parents of children under 18 years who rejected some or all vaccines for semi-structured interviews. We used various strategies, including advertising on national radio, in community centres and playgrounds in low coverage areas, and snowballing. Grounded Theory methodology guided data collection and analysis. Twenty-one parents from regional and urban locations were interviewed. All spoke of wanting happy, healthy, robust children. All endorsed parenting values and approaches aligned with modern societal expectations of taking responsibility for their child's health. They varied, however, in their lifestyle and vaccination trajectories. Participants self-identified as situated along an 'alternative' to 'mainstream' lifestyle spectrum and had moved both away from and toward vaccination over time. Some had decided before birth that they never would vaccinate their children and had not changed. Others stopped vaccinating after perceived post-vaccine reactions in their children. Still others initially rejected vaccines, but eventually accepted them. The variation and dynamic nature of the vaccination trajectories described in this study suggests that vaccine refusal is not a static trait but rather the result of ever-changing experience and continual risk assessment; not all non-vaccinating parents fit the 'alternative lifestyle' stereotype. • Most parents of young children do not define bullying in the same way that researchers do. • Most parents can recognise bullying and cyberbullying behaviours. • Some parents mislabel some forms of aggression, fighting and playful jokes as bullying. • Parents know fighting and bullying are different but are not always able to clearly articulate the differences. School bullying is a global phenomenon and parents play a key role in supporting young children and reducing bullying incidents. Parents' understanding of bullying will influence the way they respond to the behaviour, so it is important to know what parents believe bullying to be. A total of 201 Australian parents of young children between the ages of 5 and 10 participated in an online survey to define bullying and fighting in their own words and identify the differences between the two behaviours. Parents were also presented with 20 scenarios that depicted five traditional bullying behaviours, five cyberbullying behaviours, five non-bullying face-to-face behaviours and five non-cyberbullying behaviours and asked to identify whether these behaviours were bullying or not bullying. The results showed that these parents described some of the attributes which researchers define as bullying such as, the intention to harm, a power difference and repetition but they were unable to define clearly the differences between bullying and fighting. The vast majority of parents recognised when the scenario was describing bullying behaviour however, some parents classified fighting and even playful behaviour as bullying in the scenarios that did not show bullying behaviours. The intergenerational transmission of ineffective parenting practices and the cycle of crime are well documented. Despite this, insufficient research has examined parenting support services for parents who are involved in the Criminal Justice System (CJS), particularly community corrections. Research suggests that barriers exist to offender parents utilizing support services in the community, including parenting services. This study examined the key barriers that prevent offender parents from accessing parenting services in the community, pathways to parenting support for parents through Corrective Services and community agencies, and the key parenting challenges that parents experience. 14 focus groups were conducted in Australia with professional staff from Corrective Services' Probation and Parole (n = 53), community agencies (n = 9), and parents serving community-based corrections orders (n = 8). Inductive thematic analysis led to the identification of five themes that elucidate the key barriers to service access and parenting challenges including: insufficient available parenting programs, concerns and fear of child protection, intergenerational parenting problems, multiple presenting issues, and the fear of being judged. Overall, there was strong convergence in perspectives between professionals and parents, the key difference pertained to parental perceptions of child protection interventions. In addition to their empirical contribution, the findings have resulted in recommendations on how to address barriers to service access, improve parent engagement and improve the implementation of evidence-based parenting programs for CJS-involved parents in the community. Objectives To describe the qualitative research methods used in the Parenting Eating and Activity for Child Health ( PEACH ) randomized controlled trial and to examine parent-reported facilitators and barriers to the achievement of program goals. Design Qualitative study using semistructured interviews. Setting Parents enrolled in the Australian PEACH randomized controlled trial, a family-focused child weight management program conducted blinded for review. Participants A total of 95 parents of overweight children aged 5–10 years participated in face-to-face semistructured interviews. Phenomenon of Interest Factors external to the PEACH intervention that facilitated or inhibited their success. Analysis Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. Results Three facilitator themes were identified: (1) internal locus of parental control, (2) external locus of parental control, and (3) child factors. Six barrier themes were identified: (1) internal locus of parental control, (2) external locus of parental control, and (3) child factors; (4) maintenance and managing special occasions; (5) time management challenges; and (6) inconsistencies or lack of support. Conclusions and Implications The social and environmental barriers and time pressures identified by parents are a common feature of Western family life such that many parents are raising families in stressful situations. Insights provided by this qualitative research provide an important understanding of these experiences. Consideration of such issues in the design and implementation of future child weight management interventions may help to increase the acceptability and effectiveness of such programs.
