Sediment Bypass Tunnels (SBTs) are proven to be an effective measure to reduce or even stop reservoir sedimentation by bypassing sediment laden flows around reservoir dams to the downstream river reach. They are mostly used in Switzerland, Japan, and Taiwan. However, hydraulic and sedimentological operating conditions and the resistance of the invert materials against hydroabrasive erosion affect their cost-effectiveness. Hydroabrasion is a pressing issue at SBTs, other hydraulic structures and steep bedrock rivers exposed to high sediment transport rates under supercritical flow conditions. The present study was therefore conducted to address this issue by aiming at improving knowledge on abrasion mechanics and calibrating a mechanistic saltation abrasion model enhanced by Demiral-Yüzügüllü (2021). To this end, the abrasion resistance of fourteen different invert materials installed at Solis, Pfaffensprung and Runcahez SBTs in Switzerland was quantified by annual 3D laser scanning and the hydraulic conditions and sediment transport rates were regularly monitored between 2017 and 2021. The analysis of invert scans and hydraulic conditions revealed that Prandtl's first and second kinds of secondary currents occurring in the bends and straight sections of the SBTs, respectively, and the observed abrasion patterns were strongly interrelated. The tested potassium aluminate cement and steel fibre concretes, granite, cast basalt and steel plates had better abrasion resistance against impact of sediment-laden flows compared to other materials. Sediment mineralogical composition i.e., bulk hardness relative to the invert material properties significantly affected hydroabrasion. The enhanced abrasion prediction model was calibrated with the present data and a quasi-constant abrasion coefficient of k v = (4.8 ± 2.2) × 104 was obtained. The enhanced model is well-suited for both laboratory and field scales. The present findings will contribute to the sustainable utilization and operational safety of hydraulic structures, optimization of SBT and reservoir operations regarding bypassing efficiency and reservoir lifetime and modelling of bedrock river erosion. Sediments are considered to be refractory materials with limited influences on dissolved iron (dFe) pool in the ocean. However, recent field observations and laboratory experiments suggest that iron released from resuspended sediment particles and transported from continental margins is prone to fertilize large areas of the world ocean. Here we conducted a dissolution experiment to quantify the amount of dFe released from two types of resuspended sediments (silicate and calcite-rich) to open ocean surface seawater under two temperatures (5 and 15 °C). We followed pH, dissolved oxygen (dO 2), phosphate, silicate, dissolved Fe and Mn concentrations (dFe and dMn), and bacterial abundance over 250 days. Extremely low and undetectable phosphate concentrations (<50 pmol kg−1) were measured throughout the duration of the experiment, causing limited bacteria growth and stable pH and dissolved O 2 concentrations under all conditions. Silicate and dFe concentrations increased through time and high temperature (15 °C) induced more iron dissolution from the two sediments than low temperature (5 °C). Temperature had no effect on the dissolution of Mn. Our results further show that Fe and Mn are not released concurrently from the sediment source and that their distribution can be very different. Scavenging of Fe likely caused a decrease of dFe observed during the experiment, which was probably linked to the formation of Mn oxides. We also observed elevated dissolved Fe isotope ratios after dissolution, around +0.16 to +0.27‰. Isotopically heavy Fe was released from sediments to the dissolved pool during the dissolution but no difference in Fe isotope ratios was observed between the two temperature conditions. The Fe isotope fractionation can likely be attributed to ligand complexation and scavenging of Fe. These two mechanisms can be important factors not only in controlling the amount of Fe released from sediments but also in fractionating Fe isotopes at the sediment–seawater boundary. A three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and morphodynamic numerical model was developed to analyze sediment dynamics in the Rance estuary, in response to the tidal power station (TPS) built near the mouth in the 1960s. The Rance estuary is a relatively small low-discharge steep-sided ria , located along the Brittany coast in northern France, with a maximum spring tidal range of 13.5m. Taking advantage of this significant tidal regime, the first and currently the second largest operational tidal power station in the world was built at the estuary's mouth, with peak output capacity of 240MW. After calibration and validation of the model for present-day conditions, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and bed level evolution were evaluated at tidal and fortnightly scales for different scenarios, with and without TPS. Peak SSC are reached during spring tides and specifically during the estuary's infilling (flood) stage where both turbines and sluice gates are open. Unbalanced with sediment transport during ebb, sediments are accumulated in the main channel of the upper estuary. Under natural tidal forcing (i.e., without TPS), simulations show that an estuarine turbidity maximum forms in the upper estuary, and sediment deposition is significant. However, sedimentation rates are two times lower than those observed in the presence of the TPS. A possible alternative for reducing sediment accumulation in the upper estuary would be the opening of sluice gates simultaneously with the turbines during falling tide, to enhance ebb currents that would allow particles transport towards the estuary's downstream. Riparian buffers are commonly used to mitigate the negative effects of forestry operations near water, particularly sediment transport to streams. In Sweden, current practices typically involve 5-7 m wide riparian buffers along small streams. Historical forest management, which favored conifers up to the channel edge, has resulted in these narrow buffers having a simplified tree species composition and structure, making them prone to windthrow. While windthrow can contribute large wood (LW) to streams, windthrow also risks increasing sediment inputs if rootwads are exposed near stream edges. This disturbance affects sediment connectivity, or the movement of particles through the fluvial system, but the interaction between LW dynamics and sediment connectivity in small boreal streams is not well understood. We investigated sediment connectivity at the Trollberget Experimental Area in northern Sweden, where six 100 m stream reaches had either 5 m or 15 m wide riparian buffers. Pre-harvest and one-year post-harvest data on windthrow, hydrology, and sediment yields were collected. Forest harvesting increased sediment connectivity in the streams regardless of buffer width, indicating that buffers wider than 15 m are necessary to reduce sediment input impacts in small headwater streams. Windthrow affecting stream channels was more common in the 5 m buffers, leading to significantly higher deposition of very fine sediments (<250 μm) compared to the 15 m buffers. Coarse (>1 mm) and fine sediments (250 μm – 1 mm) were also higher in the 5 m buffers. We found that sediment connectivity in streams was closely linked to LW dynamics, negatively before harvest but positively after harvest. Before harvest, LW trapped sediment and prevented downstream transport, but after harvest, the increased sediment input overwhelmed this function. This paper presents the relationship between environmental and anthropic factors, long-term dunefield migration, as well as sediment budget and overpassing process at Santinhos-Ingleses dunefield, in Southern Brazil. The study is based on two-decade (2002–2023) topographic data, meteorological and satellite images (for vegetation, urbanization and dune migration assessment). An analysis of historical rainfall data reveals a consistent rise in annual average precipitation, the events often correlated with north winds, which had lower average speeds compared to the stronger south winds. This, as the primary force driving the northward migration of the dunefield, has decreased, and the drift potential diminished. During rainy days, aeolian transport is limited as the sand becomes moistened, facilitating vegetation growth (approximately 10% between 2014 and 2023). The PDO average index (2002–2023) highlighting two distinct patterns: positive periods accounting for 18% and negative periods for 82%. These patterns have significant implications for sediment volume and rainfall variability in the region. Urban expansion, estimated at around 12% during this interval, emerges as a significant factor in the system. The northern part of Santinho's embayment features a flatter, wider, and more stable compared to the southern part. The higher energy levels in the surf zone facilitate aeolian sediment transport to the beach, which is crucial for the initiation of the transgressive dunefield. Additionally, the lower topography behind the foredune, contrasting with the higher elevation further inland, increases sediment accumulation and transport. The topography data shows consistent sediment input values over the last decade (2014–2023), ranging from 6000 to 7000 m³/year. In contrast, sediment supply values during the same period average around 8000 m³/year. Sediment supply downstream of dams through control techniques of reservoir sedimentation is attracting attention for promoting both sustainable water use and river ecosystem restoration. Sediment sluicing is a sediment control technique expected to recover natural sediment regimes because it allows sediment from an upstream reservoir to pass through a downstream dam during high flows. However, only a few studies have evaluated the restorative effects of sediment sluicing. We evaluated the restoration effects of sediment sluicing on macroinvertebrate assemblages in a dammed river using a before–after control–impact design. After sediment sluicing operations, the taxa richness of macroinvertebrates increased at sites downstream of the dam under free-flow conditions, where the reservoir was completely lotic and large amounts of sediment were transported. Meanwhile, there were few changes in macroinvertebrate richness and composition at sites downstream of the dam without sluicing operations and at the dam where sluicing was operational but did not achieve free flow. The increase in taxa richness was probably due to sediment supply from sluicing operations. As most taxa that increased in response to sluicing operations were grazers, sediment supply could provide benefits through indirect impacts via food resources. Negative impacts were observed on macroinvertebrates because of the first flush of excess sediment supply during the first sluicing; however, the extent of impact was spatiotemporally limited. Sluicing operation would be better than other sediment control techniques. This study suggests that sediment sluicing is an effective restoration method for not only macroinvertebrate assemblages but also for ecosystem functions. • A novel model integrating hillslope and in-stream sediment processes is developed. • We quantified the effects of soil-water conservation (SWC) on the Loess Plateau. • SWC contributes to 54.4% and 91.9% of the decline in discharge and sediment load. • Sediment reduction effect of hillslope SWC is more lasting compared to that of check dams. Soil erosion and sediment transport processes, which are intimately connected with hydrological processes, strongly affect land surface morphology and earth system dynamics. Over the past 60 years, intensive Soil-Water Conservation (SWC) measures implemented on the Loess Plateau have significantly reduced sediment load and concurrently exacerbated runoff declines, while the quantitative evaluation of the effects of SWC measures remains challenging. This study develops a sediment module which simulates the hillslope and in-stream sediment processes, and then incorporates the module into a Geomorphology-Based Ecohydrological Model (GBEHM). Besides, the model also couples with an explicit representation of different types of SWC measures, including both Hillslope SWC (HSWC) and River-network SWC (RSWC) measures. The newly developed hydro-sediment model is then applied to the Kuye River basin, a typical river basin on the Loess Plateau, and used for quantifying the effects of SWC measures on river discharge and sediment load during 1982–2019. Compared with Period 1 (1982–2000), the river discharge decreased by 48.7% in Period 2 (2001–2019), while the sediment load experienced a more substantial decrease of 95.3% between the two periods. Based on the numerical experiment results, HSWC and RSWC contributed to 25.4% (58 million m3/yr) and 28.9% (66 million m3/yr) of the annual runoff decline, as well as 58.1% (36 million t/yr) and 33.9% (21 million t/yr) of the annual sediment load reduction between the two periods, respectively. Besides, HSWC plays an increasingly important role in sediment reduction in recent years due to check dam silting. Developing a process-based soil erosion model that comprehensively considers the effects of vegetation is complex but crucial for evaluating sediment reduction during vegetation restoration. Current understanding of the effect of vegetation on sediment reduction along hillslopes across different land uses is limited. In this paper, we developed a dynamic model of hillslope erosion that integrates the effects of vegetation on soil detachability and hydrodynamics (VED) based on the feedback mechanism between soil detachment and sediment transport. The VED was calibrated and validated with runoff plot data for woodland, grassland, and farmland in the Wuding, Yan, Jing and Wei Rivers of the Loess Plateau in China. Unified baseline parameters and decay coefficients of vegetation were obtained. The model validation results indicated that the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe simulation efficiency and relative error ranged from 0.59 to 0.99, 0.56 to 0.90, and −45.99 % to 46.36 %, respectively. The decay coefficients for soil detachment capacity (Φ), sediment transport capacity (T c), and the sediment reduction effect of vegetation exhibited the following order: woodland > grassland > farmland. Compared with VED, existing process-based soil erosion models failed to effectively characterize the influence of vegetation on Φ and T c on the Loess Plateau, with differences of several orders of magnitude. The individual contributions of runoff, soil detachability, and hydrodynamics with vegetation impact on sediment yield were quantified by VED. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction decreased gradually with increasing slope length because the soil detachment capacity of bare slopes exceeded that of vegetated slopes, resulting in a faster increase in sediment yield. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction for woodland, grassland, and farmland with 20 %–60 % vegetation covers were 66.75 %–99.95 %, 57.43 %–99.63 %, and 27.91 %–88.63 % in the boundary conditions of this study, respectively. The results reveal the potential for integrating VED into other distributed watershed hydrological and sediment models to assess the effects of vegetation restoration on sediment reduction at a watershed scale. • Sediment sources prediction accuracy is high for no particle sorting. • Particle sorting caused low conservatism and prediction accuracy of five tracers. • Adding SOM correction factor could negatively affect model results. • Reliable result if source and sediment have consistent and narrow particle sizes. Sediment fingerprinting has proven highly efficient and rapid in identifying the sources and hotspots of sediment, thereby facilitating the targeted implementation of control measures. However, the unpredictable effect of particle sorting during sediment transport on source identification has increased the uncertainty associated with this method. Here, laboratory sieving experiments were carried out to simulate particle sorting during sediment transport. The conservatism of the five widely used tracers (geochemical elements, mid-infrared, near-infrared, visible, and color properties) and the accuracy of sediment source fingerprinting were investigated in the process of sorting. The results highlight that selected tracers exhibited high source contribution prediction accuracy (mean MAE 6.6 %) without particle sorting, with the exception of the color tracer. In contrast, the predictive ability of all tracers significantly reduced (mean MAE 16.2 %) in simulated particle sorting groups (especially for 125–31 μm) due to the enrichment of fine particles. Moreover, the correction factor failed to improve the accuracy of source contribution prediction in this study. The uncertainty caused by particle sorting can be effectively resolved by narrowing the source and sediment particle sizes to <63 μm (for all five tracers) or <31 μm (except for color tracer). This study contributes a deeper understanding of the role of particle size in sediment source fingerprinting, providing valuable insights to guide future tracer selection and associated particle size criteria. Large wood (LW) and log jams have important implications for sediment dynamics within river systems. Although many case studies explore this topic, far fewer synthesize these results at the reach and basin scales. In this paper, we present a conceptual model that relates valley setting and landscape history of forested, mountain streams to spatiotemporal patterns of sediment storage and transport via the formation and decay processes of logjams. This conceptual model explores the function of logjams as sediment transport moderators, significantly influencing sediment retention, channel morphology, and lateral and longitudinal connectivity. Detailed wood inventories, channel topographic surveys, and channel morphology from four case studies are used to illustrate the range of channel responses to logjam formation, evolution, and decay in different valley contexts. Valley setting is shown to influence logjam formation and dynamics by determining the mechanisms and timing of sediment and wood recruitment. In steep and narrow (and thus coupled, confined) reaches, colluvial processes are the dominant mechanisms of wood and sediment delivery, and logjams grow vertically as sediment is stored in a wedge behind the jam (longitudinal disconnectivity). In contrast, in unconfined reaches (decoupled hillslopes), wood and sediment recruitment occurs primarily through fluvial processes, and logjams grow laterally as the channel shifts across the valley bottom. These logjams have long lifespans, often over a century, and gradually release sediment as the logjam decomposes. Sediment deposits stabilized by riparian vegetation behind these structures may persist long after logjam decay. Uranium mill tailings (UMT) present a significant environmental concern due to high levels of radioactive and toxic elements, including uranium (U), thorium (Th), and lead (Pb), which can pose serious health risks to aquatic ecosystems. While Pb isotopic tracers have been widely utilized in environmental studies to identify elemental sources and geological processes, their application in U geochemistry remains relatively limited. In this study, we investigate the distribution and migration of U in stream-river sediments surrounding a decommissioned U hydrometallurgical area, employing Pb isotopes as tracers. Our findings reveal significant enrichment and ecological risk of U, Pb, and Th in the sediments. Uranium predominantly associates with quartz and silicate minerals, and its dispersion process is influenced by continuous leaching and precipitation cycles of typical U-bearing minerals. Furthermore, we establish a compelling positive relationship (r 2 = 0.97) between 208Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/207Pb in the stream-river sediments and sediment derived from UMT. Application of a binary Pb mixing model indicates that anthropogenic hydrometallurgical activities contribute to 2.5–62.7% of the stream-river sediments. Notably, these values are lower than the 6.6–89.6% recorded about 10 years ago, prior to the decommissioning of the U hydrometallurgical activity. Our results underscore the continued risk of U pollution dispersion even after decommission, highlighting the long-term environmental impact of UMT. Atolls in the South China Sea comprise 15% of the world's total in area. In contrast to most reef flats in the Indo-Pacific region, which typically develop up to contemporary sea level, a significant portion of their reef flats in the South China Sea are inundated at depths of 5–20 m. To gain insights into modern processes and determine whether these subtidal reef flats are actively shaped by hydrodynamics, we carried out an in situ observation on a 12 m-deep southwest-facing reef flat over a period of 8 months. The measurements revealed a prevalence of seasonally varying waves and stable tidal currents. While the reef flat remained sheltered from the northeast monsoon (January–May), the southwest monsoon (June–September) led to prolonged reef exposure to substantial waves (mean significant wave height of 1.3 m, with an orbital velocity of 0.22 m/s on average). Such an exposure resulted in the formation of mobile bed ripples and entrainment of coarse-grained coral sands. Estimates of potential bedload transport rate indicated that the combined action of waves and currents caused material loss from the reef flat, with movement into the lagoon or down the fore-reef slope of the atoll. This sediment loss was equivalent to reef bed erosion of up to 28 mm during the observation period. As these potential losses may be compensated by coral reef growth, our measurements implied that modern sediment budgeting has played a significant role in the maintenance of subtidal reef flats, in terms of bed elevation. Hence, the deep reef flat does not necessarily belong to the previously identified give-up pattern; a balance of coral sediment supply and transport-induced loss may result in an equilibrium morphology, or a "lock-up" pattern. • Combination of wave orbital motions and oceanic currents resulted in substantial shear stresses. • Sediment on the reef flat was mobile for over 75% of the 8-month observation period. • The morphology of the subtidal reef flat was maintained by modern processes. • On the global scale, there are "lock-up" atolls, in addition to keep-up, catch-up and give-up ones. Sediment samples were collected with a piston sampler (114 samples) and a box core sampler (266 samples) during research cruises on the R/V Tamhae 2 of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) from 2015 to 2019, to examine the characteristics of seafloor sediments from the western South Korea Plateau of East Sea. The in situ velocity was measured at four sites using a seafloor acoustic probe developed by KIGAM (KISAP). The samples were analyzed for their physical properties and the resulting data were examined to gain insights into the distribution patterns of the sediments and how the physical properties varied by burial depth. The actual velocity of the seafloor sediments was investigated by comparing the velocities in the laboratory and in situ velocity measurements at four sites. Overall, the physical properties agree well with the expected characteristics of marine sediments but there is considerable variation in the mean grain sizes. The sediment distributions either increases or decreases gradually with depth, reflecting transport from topographically high areas (e.g., possible source and/or shelf areas). The relationships between the physical properties of samples from two transects, one east-west and the other south-north, are different, and reflect the presence of tephra with a low grain density at the specified depth intervals. The laboratory velocity is higher (approximately 20–40 m/s) than the in situ velocity measured by the KISAP because of differences in the temperature (approximately 22 °C) and pressure (∼100 atmospheric pressure). However, the corrected laboratory velocity agrees well with the in situ velocity. Inconsistencies in the data, such as the measurement frequency and condition of each system, measurement interval, and sediment grain size, are probably responsible for some of the variations in the physical property data. As one of the most important margin seas around the west Pacific, the eastern China seas are important sink for terrigenous materials and forms multiple geology structures. So research the composition and spatial distribution of sediments could help us to understand the dynamics mechanism of the marine sedimentary environment, further to comprehend the land-sea interaction process. Based on high spatial resolution sediment survey in the eastern China seas, the distribution diagram of the sediment types was compiled to reveal the space regularities of sediment. In this study, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was used to identify the controlling factors that are the main controls of the sediment distribution in the study area, which revealed three factors (F1, F2 and –F1) representing grain size categories of >5.75φ, 4.25–5.75φ and 1.50–3.00φ, respectively. F1 represents fine sediments (>5.75φ), -F1 represents coarse sediments (1.50–3.00φ), and F2 represents intermediate-sized sediments (4.25–5.75φ). The sediment transport patterns of the different grain size categories in the eastern China seas are discussed in the context of a comprehensive analysis of sediment grain size composition, material sources, flow patterns, and other factors. The results show that fine-grained sediments represent a "distant" sink of terrigenous material that formed in a stable and low-energy sedimentary environment. The coarse sediment deposits were formed in the late Pleistocene when the hydrodynamic conditions were relatively strong, and the intermediate-sized sediments were distributed in an area with a high concentration of suspension representative of mid-strength hydrodynamic conditions. The dynamics of sediment grains picked-up from the seabed and dragged by the oscillatory flow induced by wind waves close to the bottom is investigated for moderate values of the Shields parameter. The results of particle-resolved direct numerical simulations are analysed, which consist of the flow field and the trajectories of spherical particles mimicking the dynamics of the sediment grains. The Reynolds number of the flow is large enough to observe the turbulent regime. Moreover, the interaction between the turbulent eddies and the small vortex structures shed by the sediment particles is explicitly computed. The trajectories of the moving grains are determined by means of Newton's laws and the evaluation of the force and torque that the fluid exerts on the surface of each sediment grain. The Wenchuan earthquake greatly reduced the forest water conservation capacity along the banks of Minjiang River. With the intensified soil erosion and the rapid increasing sediment transport, the sediment erosion of hydraulic turbines running on the river has become more and more serious, especially of high head Francis turbines. In this study, the k-ε multiphase flow turbulence model was used to calculate the sediment-water flow of a high head Francis turbine with long and short blades in Minjiang River. The distribution pattern of sediment concentration (sediment volume fraction) on the blade surface shows that the sediment particles mainly gather on the outlet edge at 10% of the blade height on the suction surface of the long blade, while the sediment concentration on the surface of the short blade is small. The erosion of the 0Cr13Ni5Mo runner blade was tested by the flow around erosion method, and the erosion amount on the blade surface in the severe erosion area was obtained. Based on the test data of erosion and the numerical calculation results of sediment flow, a formula to calculate the sediment erosion rate of flow passage components with 0Cr13Ni5Mo material was given for turbines operating in Minjiang River. As the tidal energy industry grows, developers are interested in the influence that large scale arrays might have on their surrounding environment including hydrodynamic and sediment. Understanding of local and regional sediment dynamics is an important element for environment impact and site assessments, as changes in sediment processes could alter bed ecosystems. In Australia, the Banks Strait located in the Northeast of Tasmania has been identified as a promising site for tidal energy. Very large sand waves have been observed near the area suitable for tidal turbines installation and they may interfere with human activities. Building from previous work, a 2D regional scale model investigated the influence of different tidal farms on the morphology of Banks Strait and especially the sand waves. Sediment transport is a complex hydrological phenomenon that influences water resources, ecosystems, soil and water quality. The evaluation of sediment yield and mitigation practices are the mechanism to enhance the water resource potential. The study was aimed at simulating the sediment yield and the impact of three best management scenarios in the Upper and Middle Awash River Basin (UMARB). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (ArcSWAT 2012) was used to simulate and identify high sediment yield prone areas in the catchment by the implementation of three management practices such as filter strips, terraces, and grassed waterways. The model results indicated a good agreement between observed and simulated streamflow and sediment yield in the baseline scenario. The mean annual sediment yield was 21.43 ton/ha/yr. The implementation of 5 and 10 m filter strips reduced the mean annual sediment yield by 31.68% and 46.6%, respectively. Terraces and grassed waterways were showed a reduction of sediment yield by 19.56% and 16.64%, respectively. Filter strips were found to provide the highest reduction of sediment yield in each sub-basin and the outlet of the catchment. Besides, the combination of the three management scenarios has reduced the values of sediment yield by 50.88% from the baseline, and the mean annual sediment yield becomes 10.53 ton/ha/yr. In these results, the efficiency of soil conservation practices would increase by applying more than two sediment management scenarios in the study area. An intermediate nepheloid layer (INL) serves as an important conduit for the cross-slope transport of particulate matter, including organic carbon, biological nutrients and other lithogenic minerals. Despite extensive reports on the substantial sediment influx from the Ayeyarwady River into the northern continental slope of the Andaman Sea (AS), the transport route and fate of these river-borne sediments remain poorly understood, due to lack of in situ observations of turbid INL over the slope. In this study, we present direct evidence of an INL over the northern continental slope of the AS during the winter of 2019/2020, accompanied by enhanced mid-water turbulent mixing. Mooring measurements reveal energetic internal tides with high-mode vertical structure in the study region; and beam-like structures of internal tides are observed, which could be responsible for the enhanced mid-water turbulent mixing coinciding with the INL. Moreover, available microstructure profiles reveal energetic turbulent mixing with bottom-intensified turbulent diffusivity over the study area. Numerical experiments suggest that inhomogeneous distribution of turbulent mixing over the continental slope could induce local convergence of the upwelling transport in the upslope direction, resulting in an intrusion from the boundary to the interior and consequently promoting the INL formation. Proglacial areas in the European Alps and other high-elevation mountains are currently undergoing rapid change due to global warming. Because of rising temperatures, glaciers and glacier forefields are subjected to increased melting and associated sediment export. This observation is increasingly important with respect to high-elevation geomorphological and ecological dynamics, emerging natural hazards and mitigation efforts, and hydropower plant management. It is therefore crucial to analyze the factors and feedback mechanisms governing sediment production, transport, and deposition in these rapidly changing areas. In this study, we investigated the sediment dynamics of a proglacial area located in the Eastern Italian Alps over the period 1969–2021 with the aims of: i) identifying the areas of sediment production; ii) quantifying volumes and rates of bedload sediment transport; and iii) determining the relative contribution of glacial export and fluvial erosion to the total sediment budget. We found that i) apart from glaciers, moraines and fluvial channels have been the most important sediment sources, albeit with substantial differences in terms of connectivity and thus supply rates; ii) the volumes and rates of sediment erosion varied by one order of magnitude (between tens and hundreds of mm per year), and were generally higher along the channel network; and iii) for a relatively shorter time interval between 2005 and 2021, the relative contribution of glacial bedload input with respect to the total sediment budget ranged between 34 % and 37 %, whereas 45 % to 59 % was derived from lateral fluvial erosion. Only a relatively small sediment volume was generated by net channel bed incision. These results imply that most of the sediment released from the proglacial area of the Sulden glacier is progressively transferred to the downstream sector of the channel network, with volumes that range between 931 and 1017 tons yr−1 km−2. These values are in the typical range of sediment export volumes from glaciated basins and highlight the high dynamicity of this region of the Alps. In general, our results confirm the complexity – in terms of spatial and temporal variability – of Alpine proglacial systems and highlight the need to systematically study these areas on a wide spatial and temporal scale, since the information provided by single locations or individual sectors of the sediment cascade, may not be adequate for understanding the dynamics acting in the entire proglacial regions. The occurrence of extreme rainfall events over mountain catchments is likely to trigger mass failure processes on hillslopes and sediment transport within the channel network. Understanding the degree of linkage between the sediment sources and transfer pathways downstream is essential in those catchments where settlements are affected by hydro-geomorphic processes, in order to plan suitable interventions for risk mitigation. A recent storm (October 2020) named "Alex", estimated to be an extratropical cyclone with a more than 100-year return period, hit the Mediterranean Alps at the border between Italy and France, triggering deadly landslides and flooding processes. This work focuses on two adjacent mountain catchments located in the Liguria region (Italy) which share the same outlet, where a small village was damaged by high-magnitude sediment transport and deposition processes during the storm. In order to analyze sediment dynamics at the catchment scale leading to severe damage to the urban settlements at the outlet, an integrated approach was used. Very high resolution (0.5 m) satellite imagery was employed to map the mass failure processes on the hillslopes with a visual interpretation. This dataset was then compared with a map of the Index of Connectivity created using the SedInConnect 2.3 software to characterize the pre-event structural connectivity in both catchments. The integration of these two datasets permitted understanding that debris slides evolving into debris flows downstream supplied most of the sediments to the channel network. These processes concentrated mainly in a specific catchment where hillslopes have the highest connectivity with the valley bottom. This outcome provided a clear evidence that inventory maps developed soon after an extreme event, coupled with sediment connectivity datasets, can provide relevant information for future land management and risk mitigation strategies. The morphodynamics of inlets and ebb-tidal deltas often exhibit cyclic behaviour, controlled by wave-tide interactions and the influence of these on sediment-bypassing processes. Variation in the form and timing of inlet dynamics can occur in response to changes in the key sediment transport processes and sediment supply, and particularly the relative dominance of differential wave direction driving alongshore sediment transport. This paper investigates the morphodynamics of the Deben ebb-tidal delta through multivariate analysis of multi-annual bathymetry and metocean parameters covering the period 1991 to 2023. Results show that sediment bypassing and associated morphological change in this ebb-tidal delta follows variable behaviour mid-cycle, leading to change in the morphology and configuration of the ebb-delta from cycle to cycle. In the most recent cycle (since 2003), delta volume followed a stepwise growth driven by sediment influx periods, evident primarily in the updrift shoal, followed by cross-shore redistribution. Interannual variability in wave climate was clustered into four groups that capture the relative balance between the dominant NE and SW forcing. Sediment influx periods are mostly associated with subdued SW and increased NE forcing, but the summer and winter NE wave climate play different roles on the up- and downdrift, and upper and lower components of the ebb-delta system. Tide level has increased in the last 33 years, which is strongly correlated with ebb-delta volume increase. In this review paper, the main geometrical characteristics of sea ripples (the smallest morphological patterns that are observed at the bottom of sea waves) are reviewed together with the physical mechanisms that give rise to their appearance and control their time development. Moreover, we provide a summary of both the mathematical tools (stability analyses) and empirical formulae that can be used to predict their appearance and some of their geometrical characteristics. The ripples play a relevant role in the mechanics of coastal sediment transport since usually the flow separates at the ripple crests and generates vortex structures that pick-up the sediments from the bottom and put them into suspension. Landslides, caused by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, or human development, are likely occur in steeper slopes, while some occur in moderate slopes (15°– 35°). Although landslides can contribute a significant amount of sediment transport in a watershed, landslides are rarely considered in hydrological models. To conduct a thorough investigation into the influence of landslides on sediment transport within rivers, a detailed analysis of landslide characteristics was performed. Subsequently, a dedicated landslide module was integrated into a hydrological model, known as SWAT-Twn 2.0 – an enhanced version of SWAT-Twn, originally developed by Chiang et al. (2021). This integration allowed for the simulation of sediment transport at the hydrologic response units (HRUs) within the Xiuguluan River Basin, a mountainous watershed located in Taiwan. The study explores multiple threshold values for landslide-triggering factors (PCP: rainfall and FSW: fraction of soil water content), emphasizing the influence of the number and locations of rainfall stations on landslide identification. In comparative scenario simulations (S1: no trigger, S2: single trigger, S3: dual trigger), the integration of dual triggers (PCP + FSW) significantly improves sediment simulation results, particularly for peak total load (S3: R2 = 0.83, NSE = 0.74, PBIAS = 23.69 %). It also emphasizes the importance of specifying the particle size distribution of landslides for accurate sediment deposition calculations. In summary, it is necessary to consider landslide-triggering factors in hydrological models to enhance accuracy in sediment yield simulations. To further improve landslide identification and sediment transport modeling, the study recommends incorporating additional triggering factors into HRU classification (i.e., elevation and aspect). Based on soil erosion and sediment transport processes, CAMF (Cellular Automata-based heuristic for Minimizing Flow) selects sites for afforestation to minimize sediment influx at a catchment's outlet. CAMF uses a raster representation of the catchment and a steepest ascent hill-climbing optimization heuristic, safeguarding spatial interaction. Its execution time can be prohibitively long for large data-sets. Parallelization results in a speedup of 20 to 24 on 28 cores. We present variants of the optimization method to reduce the number and cost of the iterations. We present a tuning algorithm for the meta-parameters of these variants. The results obtained for two contrasting catchments illustrate that the accelerations reduce the cost by a factor larger than 100, with negligible effect on the afforested cells and magnitude of the sediment reduction. • SY and Sr of the SL was the largest, but the sediment MWD was the smallest. • Change in the flow discharge did not affect the distribution pattern of sediment particles. • Dynamic coupling of runoff hydraulics and EG morphology drove soil loss. • SDR was the most direct influencing factor on the Sr in EGs. Ephemeral gully (EG) erosion represents the early stage of large-scale gully (locally named as "Benggang") development on Ultisols in the granite hilly area. However, the EG erosion process and the mechanism underlying sediment production have not been fully elucidated. In this study, a series of field scouring experiments were conducted under different flow discharge levels (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 L·min−1), and the primary EGs in three typical soil layers with different weathering degrees (red soil layer (RL), transition layer (TL), and sandy layer (SL)) was dynamically monitored. The results indicated that the ratio of width to depth of the EGs rapidly decreased as the flow discharge increased. At 30 L·min−1, the average sediment yield and transport rate (Sr) of the SL were 4.85 and 5.39 times, greater than those of the RL, respectively. The sediment particles were concentrated within the 1–2 mm particle size range, accounting for over 35 %. In addition, the mean weight diameter of the sediment particles in the RL was the largest. The sediment distribution characteristics did not respond to flow changes but were affected by EG morphological changes. With increasing flow discharge, the flow shear stress and stream power increased. Further analysis revealed that the coupling effect of flow hydraulic characteristics and EG morphological evolution drove the EG erosion sediment production process, and the Sr of the SL was highly sensitive to flow discharge changes. The soil disintegration rate was an internal factor that directly affected soil loss in the EGs, with a path coefficient of 0.71. The bulk density, organic matter content, and sand content were all indirect influencing factors. The RL exhibited greater anti-erodibility than the other layers and could serve as an effective protective layer for granite hilly areas. Water erosion, a notorious major threat to food security and ecosystem sustainability, is strongly conditioned by spatial and temporal scale effects. This paper systematically reviews the scale issues in runoff and sediment delivery (SIRSD) as a research field by integrating the traditional review approach and bibliometric analysis. This review summarises SIRSD's roots and the scale effect on runoff and sediment delivery. Then, we provide quantitative insights into the SIRSD domain's development history, thematic structure, geographic distribution, international cooperation, and methodologies. Findings show that: i) SIRSD arises from the gap between the non-linearity of runoff and sediment delivery across scales and our ability to measure it. Point-based and short-term measurements cannot capture the non-linearities from the spatio-temporal heterogeneities and cross-scale interactions of factors or processes. ii) Previous literature provides evidence that the spatial scaling of specific runoff (r), soil erosion (SE), sediment yield (SSY), or sediment delivery ratio (SDR) with drainage area (A) or slope length (L) exhibits contrasting patterns due to distinct mechanisms. Infiltration-excess and saturation-excess processes account for inverse and positive r - A relations, respectively. Interrill-erosion and rill-erosion cause inverse and positive SE-L relations. Hillslope-erosion and channel/bank-erosion explain inverse and positive SSY-A relations. Downstream increasing deposition and additional sediment inputs drive inverse and positive SDR-A relations. These scaling relationships can be nonlinear or complex due to spatial heterogeneities in land use, vegetation, topography, climate, lithology, and soil characteristics. Hence, applying an empirical scaling equation developed from the region with distinct environmental contexts is not recommended. Furthermore, the existing scaling patterns or equations may require updating given global climate and land use change. iii) SIRSD is a complex and multidisciplinary issue investigated by scientists from 93 countries since 1928. International research has substantially facilitated the understanding of SIRSD; still, more collaboration should focus on less-developed countries with high soil and water loss risks and urgent conservation needs, such as those in Africa and South America under cropland expansion. iv) Scale mismatch and scale break have discredited large-scale erosion and sediment assessments. Incorporating gully and bank erosion into modelling, extending the scale range of the L factor, and expanding the sediment scaling scope from watershed to slope may make a difference. Therefore, more research with nested design incorporating multiple scales is necessary for cross-scale analysis and scalable modelling. Turbidity currents play a significant role in sediment transport in deep ocean, profoundly impacting sedimentation in the abyssal sea. This study focused on a 375 cm long sediment core collected from the Manila Trench, revealing a distinctive 15 cm turbidite layer characterized by coarse sediment, an upward fining pattern, and a basal erosion surface. Analysis of rare earth elements and Nd isotope indicates that this turbidite layer originated from Taiwan Island. Initiated in the estuarine shelf region of southwestern Taiwan Island, the turbidity current transported substantial biogenic debris and marine fresh organic carbon into the Manila Trench. Consequently, the turbidite layer exhibited an elevated CaO content and more positive δ13C values. Despite lower TOC content in the turbidite layer due to coarse particle size, the mixture of marine fresh organic matter significantly lowered the carbon age of this layer compared to the strata both below and above it. The rapid sedimentation of the turbidite deposit led to an organic carbon burial flux comparable to the rate at which normal deep-sea sediment buries organic carbon over seven hundred years. Notably, finer sediment overlaying the turbidite layer acted as a cap, enhancing carbon sequestration within the trench. In contrast to nearby core GEO6, which documented over 11 turbidity currents, core S02 recorded only one event. Detailed bathymetric analysis highlights the crucial role of local topography in detecting and preserving turbidity currents. However, the temporal and spatial variations of sediment dynamics and associated morphodynamics in this region under the influence of TCs have been little explored due to the difficulty of implementing direct observation during these extreme events. Taking typhoon Lekima in August 2019 (No. 1909) as an example, this study simulated and comprehensively investigated the dynamic processes in the RSR area under the impacts of TCs based on the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM). During the passage of Lekima, the spatial patterns of residual flow (RF), sediment flux (SF) and morphology changes in the RSR area were totally different from that during the pre- and post-Lekima periods, especially in the offshore areas (the seaward edge of sand ridges). This is because TC Lekima can generate strong wind-driven currents and waves, increasing the bottom stress and influencing the sediment transport. Due to the shallow water depth of RSRs, wave height decreased significantly towards the coast, and tidal effects gradually dominated the nearshore sedimentary dynamic processes instead of wave effects. Furthermore, the effects of TCs with different tracks and intensities were discussed in this study, and we found that TCs passing the west/east side of the study domain can induce opposite directions of sediment transport and lead to the spatial asymmetry of geomorphological evolution. This research can contribute to an improved understanding of sedimentary dynamic processes during extreme events and indicates the importance of exploring sediment dynamics response to TCs with different characteristics for reducing TC-induced coastal risks in future climate change scenarios. The source-to-sink system of the northern South China Sea (SCS) has been widely discussed during the past few decades. Sr–Nd isotope, clay minerals and trace elements were extensively used as the proxies of sediment provenance, however, still little is known about the transport processes and controlling mechanisms on detailed spatiotemporal scales due to the limitations of these methods. Here we put forward the new provenance proxies RAK and RKCN based on major element compositions to study the spatiotemporal changes in sediment provenance since 150 ka mainly from four sites, DLW3101, MD12-3429, ZHS-176 and MD12-3432, which are located on the northern SCS continental slope. Our results show that, spatially, the pathways and intensities of contour currents and gravity flows play important roles in sediment transport. For alongslope processes, the South China Sea Branch of Kuroshio Current (SCSBKC) and the Deep Water Current (DWC) transport sediments from southwestern Taiwan, while the Intermediate Water Current (IWC) can carry sediments from Hainan, the Red River or the Indochina Peninsula. For downslope processes, gravity flows transport materials from the Pearl River delta and shelf to the slope. Moreover, seafloor bathymetry influences sediment transport by altering the pathways of ocean currents. Temporally, the impacts of sea level and monsoon rainfall fluctuations are always superimposed over the last 150 ka. Sea level fluctuations could significantly change the distance from the Pearl River estuary to the slope, while variations in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall would affect continental erosion rates in the source regions. An in-situ observational study was conducted to understand the sediment transport processes disturbed by the flood generation type of Sihwa tidal power plant (TPP). A surface mooring was deployed in Lake Sihwa (inside of TPP) to collect time-series data of the current velocity and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). A TPP with a capacity of 254 MW has four sequential phases (power generation–standby–drain–standby) of operation. The SSC during power generation was one order of magnitude higher than that during drain, which led to heavily unbalanced sediment fluxes. The total residual sediment flux was always negative (into the lake), which was attributed to the mean advection processes associated with the discharge. Over 18 day mooring period, 78.28 tons m−1 of sediment was delivered to the lake. The source of delivered sediment might be attributed to more local resuspension than the sediment inflow through the gates of TPP. Since the maximum sediment influx during power generation occurred within the water head difference of 4–6 m, the reduction in discharge rate can be a possible measure for solving the sediment accumulation within Lake Sihwa. • The operation of tidal power plant induced the unbalanced sediment flux. • The maximum sediment influx occurred within the water head difference of 4–6 m. • Sediment budget into the lake tends to increase due to the advective effect. Sediment transport plays a crucial role in coastal ecosystems and is one of the least known parameters in high energy sites. The recent development of tidal energy projects challenges the scientific community to better understand this natural phenomenon and the interactions with tidal turbines. Using MIKE21/3 software from DHI, a benchmark for sediment transport model was developed with simulations with and without a tidal farm in idealised two and three-dimensional tidal channels. Results reveal that a 2D approach is sufficient for regional scale morphological assessments, however 3D models allow for a closer examination of influences around the tidal farm. Differences in calculating sediment transport rates based on approaches after Engelund & Fredsøe and Van Rijn formulae illustrate the degree of uncertainty in modelling sediment transport rates. Results for the Engelund & Fredsøe models also show that they are sensitive to mesh resolution in equilibrium conditions and are more stable in non-equilibrium conditions for the bed level change rates. • Microtextures of quartz grains in the Bay of Bengal shoreline sediments in Bangladesh are investigated. • Microtextures are grouped as mechanical, chemical, and both mechanical/chemical origin. • V-shaped marks are abundant, indicating a high-energy storm event. • The solution and precipitation features suggested a silica-saturated subaqueous marine environment. • Well-rounded grains suggested aeolian origin, and angular to sub-angular grains support a local source. SEM and SEM-EDS studies of quartz grains in the shoreline sediments of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh were carried out to evaluate the mode of origin, paleoclimate, and depositional environment. A total of 38 microtexture types were identified, which were grouped into mechanical (23 features), mechanical/chemical (6 features), and chemical (9 features) origins. The morphology of quartz grains in the shorelines was dominantly sub-angular to sub-rounded in shape, which represents robust energy conditions, short residence time, low weathering, and nearby sediment provenance. The microtextures of mechanical origin such as straight and curved scratches, pits, broken edges, and crescent-shaped features were relatively abundant in the eastern site samples (Section-I) indicating high-energy, fluvial, and beach environments. The abundance of V-shaped marks and smooth surfaces of quartz grains indicate high-velocity storm conditions and/or high-energy impact events. The well-rounded outline, low relief with dish-shaped depressions, mechanically upturned plates, and arcuate steps were also observed on quartz grain surfaces. These features suggest that they were developed during an aeolian process in the beach berm environment. Etching, solution/irregular pits, and differential relief on quartz grains were somewhat elevated in the western site samples (Section-III), reflecting that these microtextures were associated with a subaqueous collision and humid climates in the fluvial and nearshore environments. Quartz grains in all sections represented microtextures of high energetic subaqueous environment as well as wind events. Important biogeochemical processes occur in sediments at fine scales. Sampling techniques capable of yielding information with high resolution are therefore needed to investigate chemical distributions and fluxes and to elucidate key processes affecting chemical fates. In this study, a high-resolution diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique was systematically developed and tested in a controlled sediment system to measure organic contaminants, antibiotics, for the first time. The DGT probe was used to resolve compound distributions at the mm scale. It also reflected the fluxes from the sediment pore-water and remobilization from the solid phase, providing more dynamic information. Through the fine scale detection, a reduction of re-supply was observed over time, which was concentration and location dependent. Compared to the Rhizon sampling method, antibiotic concentrations obtained by DGT probes were less than the pore-water concentrations, as DGT measures the labile fraction of the compounds. The DGT probe was also tested on an intact sediment core sampled from a lake in China and used to measure the distribution of labile antibiotics with depth in the core at the mm scale. The abuse of antibiotics and widespread of their residues influences the ecosystem, induces the generation of super-bacteria, and finally poses threat to human health. A mega-earthquake in a mountainous region can trigger thousands of landslides. Subsequently, these loose co-seismic materials will experience the erosion-transport-sediment process. This process is closely associated with a series of cascading hazards, such as landslides, debris flows and floods. The disturbance and legacy effects of earthquakes have become the focus of attention for post-earthquake reconstruction and disaster mitigation. By combining the modeling of seismic-induced landslide magnitude with an analysis of the coseismic material sediment connectivity and transfer processes, we assessed the impacts of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake on the mass balance and subsequent geohazard activities. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake produced 22,785 Mt of deposit storage, 37.9 % of which (∼8636 Mt) is connected to the channels and prone to erosion and transfer by hydrodynamic forces, and the remaining 62.1 % (∼14,149 Mt) was deposited on hillslopes far from the channel network and contributed little to the sediment dynamics. Long-term field observations found a causal relationship between decreasing surface erosion rate and gradual healing of co-seismic deposits due to coarsening by progressive removal of fine grains. We evaluated the residence time of fine-grained (<0.25 mm) landslide materials using the post-earthquake sediment evacuation rate and identified three stages regarding the enhanced erosion and surface mass wasting after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, namely, the high activity period (within 40.6 ± 5.4 years), the low activity period (40.6 ± 5.4–107.1 ± 14.2 years), and the steady period (after 107.1 ± 14.2 years). Submarine canyons serve as important sediment transport conduits from littoral zones to the deep sea, with strong impacts on the sedimentation patterns in marginal areas of the ocean. Moreover, such canyons can be major geohazards for submarine infrastructure, warranting a good understanding of their past and current behavior. Here, we present a study of the geological history and the recent activity of the Nahariya submarine canyon, the longest of a system of ∼15 small blind canyons located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, offshore Israel. Two piston cores retrieved from the middle and outlet of the canyon, at 650 m and 915 m water depth, respectively, were the focus of a multi-proxy study aiming to characterize sediment transport and deposition along the canyon during the Last Glacial and up to the present. Both cores reveal a sequence of homogenous sediment of late last glacial age, which are capped by an unconformity overlying by fine laminated sediment dated to the last ∼200 years. Thus, the deglacial and most of the Holocene intervals are absent from the record. Evidence for down canyon sediment transport are abundant and include a 70 cm interval of mud clasts with disordered glacial ages that appears immediately below the hiatus, as well as broken calcareous shells of dead benthic foraminiferal species of shallow marine habitats, which are abundant throughout both cores. Similarly, shelf-derived living benthic foraminiferal species were found in the core-tops, indicating that active sediment transport persists along this canyon today. We conclude that the history of Nahariya submarine canyon includes a period of sediment accumulation that lasted until the last deglaciation. Thereafter, the canyon was dominated by an erosive regime that persisted throughout the Holocene. Sediment accumulation resumed ∼200 years ago. We suggest that the recent resumption of sediment-accumulation is a result of anthropogenic amplification of on-land soil erosion accompanied by a wet period that persisted in the region and enhanced land to sea sediment transport. • The geological history of a blind submarine canyon of E. The calculation of sediment transport capacity is of great importance in modelling of morphodynamic processes in alluvial rivers. Recently, worldwide fluvial sediment load is reducing especially in the Lower Yellow River (LYR), while the commonly used formulas of sediment transport capacity are specially developed for relatively high sediment-laden flow, which needs some improvement for the varying flow and sediment regime. The measurements during a long period (1956–2020) covering 4974 datasets in a quasi-equilibrium state were collected at seven hydrometric stations of the LYR, and the hydrodynamic variables related to suspended bed-material load were classified, in order to determine the critical parameters (K and M) in the widely used formula proposed by H.W. Zhang. The calculation relations were firstly developed between K and M and the comprehensive flow-sediment factor (STP), under various combinations of flow and sediment, which reduce the uncertainty related to modifying model input parameters. The improved formula was further applied to simulate the morphodynamic processes in the LYR. Results indicated that the improved formula presented the best accuracy in the simulation of morphodynamic processes induced by low or high incoming sediment amount, compared with the other two formulas. This improved formula can be directly applicable to the varying flow-sediment regime and achieves the accurate simulation of the hydrograph of low sediment concentration in the LYR. The structural controls of sediment connectivity are poorly understood in low-gradient watersheds and stream networks. We developed a field- and modeling-based framework to understand the timescales and thresholds associated with the structural controls of sediment connectivity and continuity in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky, USA. Field reconnaissance was carried out to assess stream morphology and sediment connectivity, which was leveraged to derive instream sediment connectivity indices for 181 pool-riffle sequences in the low-gradient bedrock stream network. Our model framework coupled a probability-based connectivity formulation with the sediment continuity formula to assess sediment transport and connectivity in the stream network. Results indicated that the bedrock system reflects an end-member in which lithology controls longitudinal stream morphology. Specifically, we found that regional morphology controls pool-riffle length scales via bedrock outcrops, which therein controls the timescales of sediment connectivity over multiple hydrologic regimes. The pool to riffle length ratio was found to be 4.6, an order of magnitude greater than the ratio for alluvial systems. The new formulation of the sediment continuity formula coupled with the probability of connectivity framework adequately captured both short-term and long-term continuous dynamics of sediment transport, as indicated by evaluation metrics with measured sediment flux and field reconnaissance. Based on the analysis of 362 riffles and pools, we found that sediment in pools upstream of bedrock outcrop barriers are disconnected 93 % of the time whereas riffles are connected and allow full continuity 99 % of the time. • Contour currents with different physical natures observed over a drift-moat system • High SSC on the drift due to long-range sediment transport by contour currents • High SSC in the moat due to moat wall erosion by tidal-induced secondary flows • Formation of drifts forced by upslope sediment transport of tidal currents Contourite drifts are ubiquitous sedimentary features in the world′s oceans, and their formation are usually ascribed to sedimentation from contour currents. However, in-situ observations of contour currents and their associated sedimentary processes were inadequate. Here, we present mooring observation results from a drift-moat contourite system in the South China Sea to gain insight into its sediment dynamics and formation mechanism. We found that quasi-persistent contour currents develop in the moat, on and below the drift, yet subject to diverse physical oceanographic processes. High suspended sediment concentrations observed on the drift mainly occur in winter, induced by high levels of sediments transported by contour currents from Taiwan. In the moat, however, high suspended sediment concentrations are mostly caused by erosion of the moat wall during periods of strong tidal currents and low shear variance. Such results underscore the complexity of current patterns and sedimentary processes across various topographic units in the drift-moat contourite system. A novel formation mechanism of the contourite drift is thereby proposed, wherein sediment transport by contour currents brings materials for constructing the drift, while its formation is driven by near-critical reflection and upslope transport of sediments by tidal currents. In small headwater channels coupled to hillslopes, episodic supplies of sediment from events like landslides can dominate local channel morphodynamics and impact ecosystem health. In this study we investigate the response of a small mountain stream in British Columbia to a sediment input event that was up to 150 times the volume of sediment transported in an average flood year caused by the upstream installation of a road bridge. Using four years of repeated UAV surveys, bedload tracers, and other field monitoring techniques, we examined the spatial and temporal changes in sediment storage along the reach, identified changes to channel morphology, and characterized the interaction between the channel bed and the supplied sediment. Historical monitoring of the reach allowed for a comparison of the response to nearly 20 years of information about bedload transport and morphologic change. We observed that most of the change within the reach occurred during the first flood after bridge installation. The supplied sediment mostly moved across the bed surface with little interaction, as tracers installed in the bed had lower than expected rates of mobility. A narrow, steep segment of the channel proximal to the bridge installation stored little sediment, whereas a wider, less steep segment further downstream absorbed much of the change. This effect was exacerbated by a logjam that formed during the first flood after bridge installation. Despite the relative magnitude of the sediment transport event, there was little change to the channel pattern, with the added sediment increasing the relief of the already existing morphologic units. This suggests river managers should focus their restoration attention on segments likely to respond to a disturbance and that the pool-riffle channel morphology can persist across a wide range of sediment-supply conditions. Erosion and accumulation of coastal areas have become an increasing concern in recent years since they can result in important social and economic problems. In this framework, natural radionuclides have emerged as an alternative tool to study coastal sediment transport and help with the management of the littoral zone. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on how these radionuclides can be applied as tracers of coastal sediment dynamics and how the sediment characteristics can influence this use. Thus, a methodology is presented in this work to use natural radionuclides as tracers of coastal erosion, transport and accumulation of sediments. For this purpose, the spatial distributions of 226Ra, 228Ra, 40K and unsupported 210Pb (210Pb ex) in two periods of time were analysed and compared in a coastal area with diverse marine dynamics. The results showed that 226Ra, 228Ra and 40K identified the different sediment erosion, transport and accumulation occurring in the study region. In addition, it was found that changes in the activity concentrations of the samples were mostly related to variations in their mineralogical composition. Finally, the activity concentration values of 210Pb ex made it possible to trace the areas where accumulation due to the sedimentation of aerosol particles in the seabed is favoured. • The height of sediment traces is used as an alternative indicator to the functional connectivity. • The frequency and magnitude of sediment connectivity are not necessarily synchronized. • The response of sediment connectivity to rainfall is nonlinear in watersheds. • The spatial inhomogeneity and amount of rainfall are important factors influencing sediment connectivity. Sediment connectivity is a fundamental concept for understanding sediment dynamics within watersheds, serving as a crucial component in watershed management and soil and water conservation. However, quantifying sediment connectivity remains a challenging task due to its complexity and the difficulties associated with direct measurements of sediment flux at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Our research aims to address this challenge by monitoring functional sediment connectivity at various scales using two key indicators: sediment yield and sediment marks. Sediment yield is monitored at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and watershed outlets, while sediment marks provide additional insight into functional sediment connectivity along the sediment transport path, particularly in slope-channel cascades and channels following rainfall events. To record sediment marks, we used wooden sticks wrapped with clean gauze as an alternative to assessing functional connectivity. Our results revealed that the activation of sediment connectivity was influenced by rainfall amount, intensity, and type, with the highest activation observed at the slope plot, followed by the outlet of the slope-channel cascade and the watershed outlet. Notably, strong sediment connectivity at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and main channels exhibits a weak correlation with sediment connectivity at the watershed outlet. In upper contribution areas with lower vegetation coverage and higher human disturbance, rainfall amount and I 60 values associated with sediment connectivity activation tend to be lower. Furthermore, our research indicates that medium-duration and moderate-intensity rainfall events have a more significant impact on sediment connectivity at slope plots, while rainfall types characterized by longer durations, lower intensity, and larger amounts have a more pronounced effect on sediment transport paths. This suggests that the identification of sediment connectivity switch nodes can be achieved by considering both rainfall characteristics and underlying surface features. Looking ahead, future research can leverage long-term observations and data-driven models to explore rainfall thresholds for sediment connectivity at various scales, ultimately improving sediment transport prediction within watersheds. Estuarine deltas play a critical role in the interaction between the ocean and land and serve as the primary location for the deposition of terrestrial organic carbon and pollutants. However, many deltas are increasingly at risk of erosion due to natural processes and human activities. In particular, abandoned estuarine deltas are extremely prone to erosion in the absence of sediment replenishment. The erosion of sediment in these deltas is crucial in comprehending the evolution of delta erosion as it directly impacts coastal geomorphology, ecological environments, geochemical cycling, and carbon sequestration dynamics. Therefore, determining accurately the erosion characteristics of estuarine deltaic sediments is essential for assessing and managing these evolving coastal systems. Therefore, this study conducted erosion experiments on undisturbed sediment samples collected from the subaqueous delta of the abandoned Yellow River Estuary (Old Qingshuigou Estuary) utilizing the UMCES-Gust Erosion Microcosm System. The aim was to reveal the spatial distribution characteristics of sediment erodibility and explore the erosion process, characteristics, and influencing factors of the surface sediments in the area. Erosion characteristics exhibited a spatial distribution pattern of increased erodibility in nearshore sediment and reduced erodibility in offshore sediments. The critical erosion shear stress of surface sediments ranged from 0.2 to 0.68 N/m2, while the erosion rate increased linearly with an increase in erosion shear stress and reached a maximum value of 2.119 g/m2 s, suggesting that nearshore sediments exhibited strong erodibility. Furthermore, the erosion characteristics exhibited a strong correlation with the type of sediment. Silt exhibited surface erosion and Type I erosion (depth-limited erosion), whereas silty sand primarily underwent volume erosion and Type II erosion (steady-state erosion). Particle size characteristics played a crucial role in influencing erosion. Additionally, our results revealed that the effective particle size of sediment aggregates and the scale effect of turbulence were also important factors that affected sediment erosion characteristics. Understanding Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) spatial distribution in natural environments is crucial due to their environmental persistence and potential bioaccumulation. However, limited research has investigated PFASs spatial distribution at a high resolution, especially in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Here, we examined the composition and concentration of PFASs in 36 bulk surface sediments and grain-size fractionated sediments from 9 representative sites to determine the spatial distribution characteristics in Shenzhen Bay. We found that ΣPFASs decreased gradually from nearshore area to offshore area (0.680 and 0.297 ng g−1 dw, respectively). Furthermore, PFASs are easily adsorbed on fine-grained sediments, likely due to their chain length and hydrophobicity. We argue that the lateral movement of sediments may transport fine-grained sediments associated with ΣPFASs out of the bay, resulting in the spatial difference in ΣPFASs in Shenzhen Bay. The formation of the Jiangsu radial sand ridges (RSRs) in East China has received extensive attention. However, the provenance of the Jiangsu RSRs sediments is still controversial. In this study, the Pb isotopic compositions of residual fractions were used to elucidate the provenance of the Jiangsu RSRs sediments. The results showed that Pb isotopic compositions of sediments in onshore RSRs were not significantly different with those of the landward offshore RSRs, indicating the shoreward transport of sediments from the landward offshore RSRs. The combination of Pb–Nd isotopic compositions revealed that the seaward offshore sediments mainly originated from the Yangtze River Mouth, while the onshore and landward offshore sediments were dominantly supplied by the Old Yellow River Delta through the southward flow. • An improved depth-averaged two-phase continuum flow model is adopted to investigate the effects of pore-fluid pressure and bed sediment conditions on multi-size debris flow. • New mechanisms are proposed to numerically explain the phenomenon of "the larger sediment sizes of bed materials, the higher erosion rate" and front coarsen of debris flows on the erodible bed. • The non-dimension number and energetics of the debris flows are investigated to demonstrate it is necessary to incorporate water-sediment and particle-particle interactions. Debris flows are classical two-phase flows that are greatly affected by bed sediment conditions. However, the underlying mechanism remains uncertain from either a theoretical or numerical perspective. Here an existing depth-averaged two-phase continuum flow model is further improved by incorporating the effects of pore-fluid pressure and bed sediment conditions. By numerical simulation of the USGS experiments, we have numerically reproduced the mechanism that "the coarser the bed sediments and the larger the basal pore pressure, consequently the larger the erosion rates". Moreover, an additional mechanism for this phenomenon has been revealed. Specifically, debris flows on steep slopes are likely to fall into a high shear stress regime, under which conditions the sediment transport capacity always takes a maximum value and is independent of the sediment size. Therefore, the sediment settling velocity that is proportional to the sediment size affects the erosion rate directly. It is also observed that the added potential energy due to a net erosion has positive effects on the kinetic energy of the debris flow. Notably, coarse and fine particles exhibit distinct roles in energetics and the former is characterized by more intensive interactions with the water phase, which should be appropriately considered in the modeling. Finally, particle size coarsening is observed in the head region, which is attributed to the hiding/exposure mechanisms of nonuniform sediments. Soil erosion and accompanying sediment issues have a significant impact on environmental sustainability. However, there is not currently a clear understanding of the relationship between soil erosion and sediment sources at the catchment scale, which has led some researchers to regard areas with severe soil erosion as the main sediment source. This view does not apply in all circumstances. • This paper uses 137Cs to study the average annual erosion rate of different land use types. The results show that the erosion rates of woodland, sparse woodland and farmland areas were 400, 1756, and 2771 t·km−2·a−1, respectively, multiplied by the corresponding area. Surface soil erosion levels in the catchments of the three types accounted for 11%, 26% and 25%, respectively, and the total accounted for 62% when the gully bank accounted for 38%. • Fingerprinting technique results show that the relative source contributions of woodland, farmland, sparse woodland and gully bank areas to sediment at the small catchment outlet were 4%, 10%, 48% and 38%, respectively. • The meteorological Lepage test effectively anlyzed the temporal variation of the water and sediment discharge for the first time. • The increase in sediment transport within tributaries and during short-term flood events has become a key characteristic of the upper Yangtze River in recent years. • The reduction in sediment entering the Three Gorges Reservoir decreased its downstream sediment reduction effect. After the construction of the cascade reservoirs in the lower Jinsha River, it has become necessary to clarify the spatial and temporal variability of the volume of sediment entering the Three Gorges Reservoir in order to manage sediment within the basin considering the new situation of rapid sediment reduction. Previous studies were affected by the inaccurate analyses of transition points and associated causes and were unable to identify clear changes in the spatial and temporal characteristics. Therefore, the impact that the Three Gorges Reservoir has on sediment reduction in the upper Yangtze River needs to be reassessed. The Lepage test and sediment identity factor method were applied to reveal that the sediment transported by the Jinsha River has significantly decreased since 2013 due to the reservoir construction, while the sediment transported by the Min River and Jialing River has slightly increased since 2014 and 2015 due to heavy rainfall. However, this has ultimately led to a significant reduction in sediment entering the Three Gorges Reservoir since 2013. Accordingly, the spatial composition of sediment sources in the Three Gorges region has been dominated by tributaries in recent years, with the Jialing River accounting for 38.98 % of the total and the Jinsha River accounting for only 1.74 %. Under these new conditions, sediment transported during short-term floods becomes more important, with sediment entering the Three Gorges Reservoir during 7 day flood events accounting for up to 47.16 % of the total transport in a year. As a result of sediment trapping by the upstream reservoirs, the Three Gorges Reservoir is responsible for only 7.5 % to 22.75 % of the sediment reduction observed at Yichang Station. Understanding the weakened impact that the Three Gorges Reservoir has on the sediment reduction phenomenon in the upper Yangtze River is important for managing the schedules of the reservoirs in the upper Yangtze River. • Mass movement is an important erosion mode and sediment source in gully network. • Mass movement increased sediment concentration and led to peak sediment concentration. • Mass movement was prone to be triggered by rainfall with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity. • Rainfall amount and slope gradiet determined the trigger and total volume of mass movement. Mass movement erosion on the gully sidewalls is recognized as an important erosion mode and sediment source in hilly and gully watersheds. However, the trigger of mass movement erosion and transport of gravity-detached material remain poorly understood. A series of rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on six loess gully sidewall models, with a height (1 m), three rainfall (60 mm, 48 mm and 24 mm) and two slope gradients (70° and 80°), to quantitatively explore the sensitivity factor and transport mechanisms of mass movement. Results revealed that the accumulation volume and initiation of the mass failure were significantly influenced by rainfall amount. The accumulative volume of failure events was observed to increase in a linear pattern with increasing rainfall amount. The minimum cumulative rainfalls for the initiation of mass failure on the loess gully sidewalls were approximately 43.6, 28.2 and 65.6 mm for short-duration and high-intensity, medium-duration and moderate-intensity and short-duration and moderate-intensity rainfalls, respectively. This implied that the initiation of mass failure was more prone to rainfall events with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity than those with a high intensity and short duration. Rainfall amount and initial slope gradient were the most sensitive elements driving the number and volume of the mass movement erosion. Mass movement erosion raised sediment concentration, but the eroded material was unable to be transported by runoff in a timely manner. Average sediment concentrations at the model outlet increased by 1.9–11.9 times following the occurrence of mass failures compared to those before. A low instantaneous sediment delivery ratio of 0.032 for the mass movement erosion. The flux of suspended sediment and bedload in a watershed is closely linked to the resistance of soil, known as erodibility. However, the relation between the resistance generated by soil to sediment transport from the hillslope to the river flow is still a challenge. Typically, the bedload flux is related to the shear stress of the main channel. However, the link between lateral sediment flux from hillslopes to suspended sediment flux of the main channel and the relation between bedload and suspended sediment flux to soil erodibility need to be developed. For three Brazilian watersheds, suspended sediment and bedload transport, soils, and hydrological data were obtained to determine watershed soil erodibility. The landscape connectivity expressed by hydrological-sediment connectivity was applied to determine the lateral sediment transport to the primary watershed channel. The flow resistance and lateral suspended sediment discharge were represented by the curve number, which summarized the resistance from the soil-group complex leading to soil erodibility. The curve number addressed the lateral flow and suspended sediment transport to represent the lateral connectivity on the landscape.
