• A novel model integrating hillslope and in-stream sediment processes is developed. • We quantified the effects of soil-water conservation (SWC) on the Loess Plateau. • SWC contributes to 54.4% and 91.9% of the decline in discharge and sediment load. • Sediment reduction effect of hillslope SWC is more lasting compared to that of check dams. Soil erosion and sediment transport processes, which are intimately connected with hydrological processes, strongly affect land surface morphology and earth system dynamics. Over the past 60 years, intensive Soil-Water Conservation (SWC) measures implemented on the Loess Plateau have significantly reduced sediment load and concurrently exacerbated runoff declines, while the quantitative evaluation of the effects of SWC measures remains challenging. This study develops a sediment module which simulates the hillslope and in-stream sediment processes, and then incorporates the module into a Geomorphology-Based Ecohydrological Model (GBEHM). Besides, the model also couples with an explicit representation of different types of SWC measures, including both Hillslope SWC (HSWC) and River-network SWC (RSWC) measures. The newly developed hydro-sediment model is then applied to the Kuye River basin, a typical river basin on the Loess Plateau, and used for quantifying the effects of SWC measures on river discharge and sediment load during 1982–2019. Compared with Period 1 (1982–2000), the river discharge decreased by 48.7% in Period 2 (2001–2019), while the sediment load experienced a more substantial decrease of 95.3% between the two periods. Based on the numerical experiment results, HSWC and RSWC contributed to 25.4% (58 million m3/yr) and 28.9% (66 million m3/yr) of the annual runoff decline, as well as 58.1% (36 million t/yr) and 33.9% (21 million t/yr) of the annual sediment load reduction between the two periods, respectively. Besides, HSWC plays an increasingly important role in sediment reduction in recent years due to check dam silting. The Wenchuan earthquake greatly reduced the forest water conservation capacity along the banks of Minjiang River. With the intensified soil erosion and the rapid increasing sediment transport, the sediment erosion of hydraulic turbines running on the river has become more and more serious, especially of high head Francis turbines. In this study, the k-ε multiphase flow turbulence model was used to calculate the sediment-water flow of a high head Francis turbine with long and short blades in Minjiang River. The distribution pattern of sediment concentration (sediment volume fraction) on the blade surface shows that the sediment particles mainly gather on the outlet edge at 10% of the blade height on the suction surface of the long blade, while the sediment concentration on the surface of the short blade is small. The erosion of the 0Cr13Ni5Mo runner blade was tested by the flow around erosion method, and the erosion amount on the blade surface in the severe erosion area was obtained. Based on the test data of erosion and the numerical calculation results of sediment flow, a formula to calculate the sediment erosion rate of flow passage components with 0Cr13Ni5Mo material was given for turbines operating in Minjiang River. By using this formula, the sediment erosion of flow passage components in hydraulic turbines with 0Cr13Ni5Mo or similar materials operating in Minjiang River can be predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on soil erosion and sediment transport processes, CAMF (Cellular Automata-based heuristic for Minimizing Flow) selects sites for afforestation to minimize sediment influx at a catchment's outlet. CAMF uses a raster representation of the catchment and a steepest ascent hill-climbing optimization heuristic, safeguarding spatial interaction. Its execution time can be prohibitively long for large data-sets. Parallelization results in a speedup of 20 to 24 on 28 cores. We present variants of the optimization method to reduce the number and cost of the iterations. We present a tuning algorithm for the meta-parameters of these variants. The results obtained for two contrasting catchments illustrate that the accelerations reduce the cost by a factor larger than 100, with negligible effect on the afforested cells and magnitude of the sediment reduction. Water erosion, a notorious major threat to food security and ecosystem sustainability, is strongly conditioned by spatial and temporal scale effects. This paper systematically reviews the scale issues in runoff and sediment delivery (SIRSD) as a research field by integrating the traditional review approach and bibliometric analysis. This review summarises SIRSD's roots and the scale effect on runoff and sediment delivery. Then, we provide quantitative insights into the SIRSD domain's development history, thematic structure, geographic distribution, international cooperation, and methodologies. Findings show that: i) SIRSD arises from the gap between the non-linearity of runoff and sediment delivery across scales and our ability to measure it. Point-based and short-term measurements cannot capture the non-linearities from the spatio-temporal heterogeneities and cross-scale interactions of factors or processes. ii) Previous literature provides evidence that the spatial scaling of specific runoff (r), soil erosion (SE), sediment yield (SSY), or sediment delivery ratio (SDR) with drainage area (A) or slope length (L) exhibits contrasting patterns due to distinct mechanisms. Infiltration-excess and saturation-excess processes account for inverse and positive r - A relations, respectively. Interrill-erosion and rill-erosion cause inverse and positive SE-L relations. Hillslope-erosion and channel/bank-erosion explain inverse and positive SSY-A relations. Downstream increasing deposition and additional sediment inputs drive inverse and positive SDR-A relations. These scaling relationships can be nonlinear or complex due to spatial heterogeneities in land use, vegetation, topography, climate, lithology, and soil characteristics. Hence, applying an empirical scaling equation developed from the region with distinct environmental contexts is not recommended. Furthermore, the existing scaling patterns or equations may require updating given global climate and land use change. iii) SIRSD is a complex and multidisciplinary issue investigated by scientists from 93 countries since 1928. International research has substantially facilitated the understanding of SIRSD; still, more collaboration should focus on less-developed countries with high soil and water loss risks and urgent conservation needs, such as those in Africa and South America under cropland expansion. iv) Scale mismatch and scale break have discredited large-scale erosion and sediment assessments. Incorporating gully and bank erosion into modelling, extending the scale range of the L factor, and expanding the sediment scaling scope from watershed to slope may make a difference. Therefore, more research with nested design incorporating multiple scales is necessary for cross-scale analysis and scalable modelling. • The height of sediment traces is used as an alternative indicator to the functional connectivity. • The frequency and magnitude of sediment connectivity are not necessarily synchronized. • The response of sediment connectivity to rainfall is nonlinear in watersheds. • The spatial inhomogeneity and amount of rainfall are important factors influencing sediment connectivity. Sediment connectivity is a fundamental concept for understanding sediment dynamics within watersheds, serving as a crucial component in watershed management and soil and water conservation. However, quantifying sediment connectivity remains a challenging task due to its complexity and the difficulties associated with direct measurements of sediment flux at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Our research aims to address this challenge by monitoring functional sediment connectivity at various scales using two key indicators: sediment yield and sediment marks. Sediment yield is monitored at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and watershed outlets, while sediment marks provide additional insight into functional sediment connectivity along the sediment transport path, particularly in slope-channel cascades and channels following rainfall events. To record sediment marks, we used wooden sticks wrapped with clean gauze as an alternative to assessing functional connectivity. Our results revealed that the activation of sediment connectivity was influenced by rainfall amount, intensity, and type, with the highest activation observed at the slope plot, followed by the outlet of the slope-channel cascade and the watershed outlet. Notably, strong sediment connectivity at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and main channels exhibits a weak correlation with sediment connectivity at the watershed outlet. In upper contribution areas with lower vegetation coverage and higher human disturbance, rainfall amount and I 60 values associated with sediment connectivity activation tend to be lower. Furthermore, our research indicates that medium-duration and moderate-intensity rainfall events have a more significant impact on sediment connectivity at slope plots, while rainfall types characterized by longer durations, lower intensity, and larger amounts have a more pronounced effect on sediment transport paths. This suggests that the identification of sediment connectivity switch nodes can be achieved by considering both rainfall characteristics and underlying surface features. Looking ahead, future research can leverage long-term observations and data-driven models to explore rainfall thresholds for sediment connectivity at various scales, ultimately improving sediment transport prediction within watersheds. Soil erosion and accompanying sediment issues have a significant impact on environmental sustainability. However, there is not currently a clear understanding of the relationship between soil erosion and sediment sources at the catchment scale, which has led some researchers to regard areas with severe soil erosion as the main sediment source. This view does not apply in all circumstances. • This paper uses 137Cs to study the average annual erosion rate of different land use types. The results show that the erosion rates of woodland, sparse woodland and farmland areas were 400, 1756, and 2771 t·km−2·a−1, respectively, multiplied by the corresponding area. Surface soil erosion levels in the catchments of the three types accounted for 11%, 26% and 25%, respectively, and the total accounted for 62% when the gully bank accounted for 38%. • Fingerprinting technique results show that the relative source contributions of woodland, farmland, sparse woodland and gully bank areas to sediment at the small catchment outlet were 4%, 10%, 48% and 38%, respectively. The results reveal that the detachment process of soil and the transport process of sediment with runoff were internally related and independent of each other. • By comparing on-site erosion rates with downstream source contributions, we have a clearer understanding of soil erosion and subsequent sediment transport process in the agroforestry catchment in mountainous areas. We emphasize the importance of governance and management in areas with severe soil erosion, mainly targeting types such as hillslope framland. • Lateral sediment flux from hillslopes is directly connected to the curve number. • The curve number summarized the resistance from the soil-group complex. • The lateral sedimentologic connectivity was well represented by the curve number. • The soil-cover complex in a watershed is closely related to watershed erodibility. The flux of suspended sediment and bedload in a watershed is closely linked to the resistance of soil, known as erodibility. However, the relation between the resistance generated by soil to sediment transport from the hillslope to the river flow is still a challenge. Typically, the bedload flux is related to the shear stress of the main channel. However, the link between lateral sediment flux from hillslopes to suspended sediment flux of the main channel and the relation between bedload and suspended sediment flux to soil erodibility need to be developed. For three Brazilian watersheds, suspended sediment and bedload transport, soils, and hydrological data were obtained to determine watershed soil erodibility. The landscape connectivity expressed by hydrological-sediment connectivity was applied to determine the lateral sediment transport to the primary watershed channel. The flow resistance and lateral suspended sediment discharge were represented by the curve number, which summarized the resistance from the soil-group complex leading to soil erodibility. The curve number addressed the lateral flow and suspended sediment transport to represent the lateral connectivity on the landscape. Sediment transport (sand and suspended sediment) from hillslopes was added to the bedload transport along the longitudinal axis of the watershed, and the watershed soil erodibility (K W) was, thus, obtained for each of the three evaluated watersheds. Human activities and climate are two key factors affecting hydrological and soil erosion processes. Understanding their impacts on water discharge and sediment transport is very important for sustainable development of watersheds, particularly in subtropical regions with high precipitation and high sediment loads. We here compared the long-term dynamics of water discharge and sediment transport in four large contiguous watersheds in subtropical China and explored the importance of the main influencing factors including climate, nature endowment such as geology, and human activities. Significant differences have been observed between watersheds in terms of sediment and water discharge (p < 0.001). Pairwise comparison among the four basins demonstrated significant differences in sediment modulus among 5 of the 6 pairs (p < 0.05). The sediment modulus in the Lishui Basin was significantly higher than those in other basins, mainly due to the substantial presence of steep slopes in the mountainous region, which is prone to soil erosion. Temporally, sediment transport in the four basins was well synchronized showing significant decreasing trends with abrupt change points (p < 0.001). In contrast, no trends and abrupt change points were detected in water discharge, mainly influenced by precipitation. Human activities played a predominant role to the reduction of sediment transport (80% to 102%) compared with those of climate (-2% to 19%) across the four basins. Additionally, our study also showed land cover had various basin-independent impacts on the change of sediment transport. Through cross-basin comparisons of the long-term changes in water discharge and sediment transport, our study revealed the similarities and differences in their driving mechanisms, providing valuable information for land use planning and water resource management in large subtropical basins. The interaction between climate and tectonics chiefly governs the erosion and sedimentary budget in the tectonically active Himalayan Mountain chain. In the present study, the relative contribution from the various litho-tectonic units of the Himalaya to the sedimentary budget of the Teesta River System (TRS) (a major tributary of the Brahmaputra system) has been deciphered using the Sr and Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr, ε Nd) of bed sediments. The possible controlling factors for such observed sedimentary provenance have also been assessed. The discharge-weighted sediment transport amount has been translated into the quantification of the erosion rate in the basin. The 87Sr/86Sr and ε Nd values in the silicate fraction of bed sediments range from 0.74867 to 0.90529 and − 24.3 to −13.9, respectively. In the Teesta main channel, 87Sr/86Sr and ε Nd show large variability ranging from 0.74867 to 0.82288 and −21.8 to −13.9, respectively along its entire course. This large variability indicates changes in sediment sources i.e., Higher Himalaya and Lesser Himalaya. These data sets show that >60 % of TRS sediments are derived from the Lesser Himalaya, indicating a higher physical erosion over the catchments in the Lesser Himalaya. Our assessment suggests that the sedimentary budget of the Teesta Basin is chiefly governed by higher exhumation as well as the vertical uplift rate of the lesser Himalaya sector of the study area (due to the presence of Rangeet duplex) coupled with focused precipitations. Based on the sediment discharge method, we estimate the erosion rate in the Teesta basin to be 1.7 ± 0.5 mm/yr, which yields a total annual sediment flux of ~41.4 ± 12.4 Mtons. This estimate is comparable to other Himalayan River basins like the Ganga basin, however, lower than the erosion hotspots such as the Brahmaputra basin (Namche Barwa and eastern Syntaxis region) and Indus basin (western Syntaxis region). Abstract The future trend of water and sediment variation is closely related to the governance of the Yellow River. The increasingly frequent occurrence of extreme rainfall events has rendered the future water and sediment situation of the Yellow River uncertain. Understanding the characteristics of flood and sediment yield of the river basin under extreme rainfall conditions at different times is a prerequisite and foundation for accurate prediction of water and sediment situation in the Yellow River in the future period. We here used the July 26 extraordinary rainstorm event in 2017 in the Wuding River as a starting point for revealing the law of flood and sediment yields changes under extreme rainfall conditions around the year 2000. The results indicated that, during the period from 1960 to 2016, the average proportion of extreme rainfall depth in the middle Yellow River region over the total precipitation depth increased by 5.1%. Areas where extreme rainfall events frequently occur showed a trend of developing from localized regions in the Toudaoguai–Longmen reach to the majority of the middle reaches. There were obvious changes in the rainfall-flood and rainfall-sediment relations under extreme rainfall conditions. Compared with historical extreme rainfall events, the decline in flood and sediment yield in the river basin after 2000 under similar rainfall and intensity conditions was obvious. Among these results, flood decreased by 30.4–78.2%, sediment yield was decreased by 53.0–88.2% and sediment content in flood was decreased by >47.2% on average when compared with the same rainfall conditions in the previous century. Comparative watershed studies showed that, during extreme rainfall events, areas under soil and water loss management programs suffer 57.2% and 75.7% less flood runoff modulus and sediment transport modulus, respectively, than non-managed areas. This indicates that soil and water loss management is the major driving factor for changes in rainfall-flood and rainfall-sediment relations under extreme rainfall conditions. This study highlights the importance of soil and water loss management in the flood control and sediment reduction. We concluded that, with the implementation of soil and water conservation measures, the probability of large flood and sediment events will greatly decrease and the amount of sediment entering the Yellow River under extreme rainfall will further decrease in the next 30 years. Abstract The lower Amazon basin contains vast floodplains that exchange sediment with the main river. The exchange of sediment between the floodplain and the channel follows a seasonal cycle that is anticorrelated with the hydrological cycle. At low water stages, sediment that has been stored in the floodplain for potentially several thousands of years is eroded and transferred from the floodplain to the mainstem. During high water stages, most sediment transported in the main channel stems directly from the eroding source with little intermittent storage. We apply the meteoric cosmogenic 10Be to stable 9Be ratio (10Be/9Be) as a denudation and weathering proxy to investigate this seasonality in sediment transport. Single meteoric 10Be concentrations ([10Be]) have previously been shown to record floodplain storage; whereas fractions of mobilized 9Be, a trace metal released during weathering, provide degrees of weathering. The resulting 10Be/9Be ratio provides denudation rates of the sediment sources. We compare 10Be/9Be measured on suspended sediment from river depth profiles at two sites (Óbidos/Macapa) and during two hydrological seasons (high/low water stage in 2013). We show that careful construction of river depth profiles in combination with Rouse modeling is necessary to exclude the grain size dependence that together with hydrodynamic sorting introduces a bias into single [10Be] and [9Be]. In contrast, the 10Be/9Be is largely uniform across grain sizes and is thus unaffected by sorting. Our 10Be/9Be ratios, the denudation rates derived from them, and mobilized 9Be fractions do not show variations outside their uncertainties across seasons or sites. Thus, 10Be/9Be show that upstream sediment sources were well mixed by multiple cycles of storage and remobilization in the floodplain. In the northwestern East China Sea, sediment transport and mixing in both along-shelf and cross-shelf dimensions are distinguished using quantitative provenance analysis, with an aim to demonstrate a net transport pattern and thereby infer potential transport and dispersal processes over geological timescales. The dataset comprises 328 bottom sediment samples, which were characterized by detrital-mineral and grain-size analyses. Results show that only in the south of the study area the primary source of sediment is the Yangtze River. In the north, instead, three end-member sources, i.e., the Yangtze, Yellow and Huaihe Rivers, are quantified separately using an end-member mixing analysis. Along-coast mixing between the updrift Huaihe–Old Yellow and downdrift Yangtze River systems is minimized. In exchange, offshore sediment transport is enhanced instead. This conversion from along-shelf to cross-shelf transport is attributed to the presence of a large-scale radial tidal current system off the Jiangsu coast as well as the headland effect produced by the protruding north flank of the subaerial Yangtze delta and the Yangtze riverine plume. This radial tidal current system acts both as a trap for Huaihe–Old Yellow River sediments transported by the southward-direct longshore current, and as a transfer center for sediment dispersal offshore. Radiating transport pathways virtually indicate an extensive mixing of Yangtze sediments and Old/modern Yellow and Huaihe sediments in the southwestern Yellow and northernmost East China Seas. As an independent dynamic system, it acts as a critical link between the Yangtze and modern/Huaihe–Old Yellow River dispersal systems. Thus, we conclude that these three large-scale dispersal systems and their complex interplay dominate sediment transport, redistribution and mixing on the eastern China continental shelf. Road erosion is a global environmental issue. The transport of eroded sediment from road to stream can devastatingly impact water quality. Research efforts to combat this issue have prioritized maintaining roads and preventing erosion. Little research has explored the fate of eroded road materials in their transport from road to stream. Therefore, taking the Xiangchagou watershed in the Dabie Mountains of China as a case, this study investigated how local geography determines the formation and thresholds of different delivery pathways (gullied, partially gullied, and diffuse pathways) for road-eroded sediment through runoff, based on the binary logistic regression analysis, random forest model, and the lowest point data fitting methods. It explored how these different pathways have variable impacts on local plant and soil communities. Our results showed that soil D 50 , bulk density, shrub-grass coverage, and local plant diversity varied significantly (p < 0.05) between different delivery pathways. In particular, soil bulk density and local plant diversity varied significantly (p < 0.05) among different position of these delivery pathways. Specifically, the diffuse pathways are characterized by lower soil bulk density, looser soil structure, and higher species diversity, likely explained by the deposition of sediment-loaded runoff. Gullied pathways, conversely, had significantly more compacted surface soil and lower local plant diversity, likely as a result of scouring by sediment-loaded runoff. Slope gradient of upslope catchment (U s), road segment (R s), and lower hillslope (D s) and effective contributing area (E ca), which determine the intensity and kinetic energy of sediment-loaded runoff, are the main external drivers that determine the occurrence of gullied pathways. By contrast, the soil median particle size, surface roughness, and shrub-grass cover of lower hillslope, which contribute to erosion resistance of hillslope, are the primary intrinsic drivers promoting development of pathways from partial to full gully. Furthermore, we found that the critical topographic thresholds for the initiation of the gully pathways and the continued development of gully from partial to complete gully pathways could be expressed as D s = 0.35E ca −0.13 and D s = 0.41E ca −0.17, respectively. Plastic waste and its fragments (microplastics; <5 mm) have been observed in almost all types of environments. However, the mechanisms underlying the flow and transport processes of plastics are unknown. This is particularly valid for river sediments, where complex interactions occur between particles and influence their vertical and horizontal distribution patterns. In this study, we investigated the vertical redistribution of 14 pristine microplastics (MPs) with different densities, sizes, and shapes within disturbed sediment without lateral transport (i.e., low-velocity flow). MPs were spiked into sediments (height: 8 cm) in a column with a height of 1 m (diameter: 6 cm) filled to the top with water. The sediment was perturbed by turning the column upside-down to simulate remobilization and the subsequent deposition of sediment. After the complete sedimentation of the particles, the water column was filtered and the sediment was cut into vertical sections. MPs were then extracted from the sediment using sieves and a density separation method, and were counted under a stereomicroscope. Low-density polymers were mainly recovered in the water column and at the surface of the sediment, whereas high-density polymers were found within all sediment sections. The vertical distribution of high-density polymers changes primarily with the sediment grain size. The distribution of each polymer type changes depending on the size and/or shape of the particles with complex interactions. The observed distributions were compared with the expected distributions based only on the vertical velocity formulas. Overall, the formulas used did not explain the sedimentation of a portion of low-density polymers and predicted a lower distribution in the sediment than those observed in the experiment. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering MPs as multi-dimensional particles and provides clues to understand their fate in low-velocity flow systems, considering that they undergo scavenging in sediments. We hypothesized degradation rates vary across sediment type and are a function of the connectivity regimes for low gradient systems. We carried out aerobic incubation experiments to assess oxidation and mineralization-nitrification rates and changes in stable isotopic ratios for sediment and dissolved organic matter and nitrate. Sediment originated from erosion across the watershed's surface shows higher carbon oxidation rates (k = 3.9 × 10−3 d−1) and lower nitrogen mineralization-nitrification rates (k = 7.9 × 10−4 d−1) compared to sediment originated from the creek's streambed that integrates algae and other autotrophic matter (k = 1.6 × 10−3 d−1 and k = 3.4 × 10−3 d−1). Differences are attributed to sediment transport of humified and plant matter during storms of high watershed connectivity and sediment transport of autochthonous sediment for low connectivity. Results support our hypothesis and suggest that the sediment connectivity regime of the watershed exhibits control on biogeochemical cycling of the stream network. Cumulatively, sediment degradation rates were one to two orders magnitude higher than previously assumed. Sediment rates reflect aerobic waters and place the organic matter as active and comparable to reported turnover of algae and fine sized leaf litter. Stable isotopic ratios of sediment change marginally for the two sediment types for carbon (ε = 0.4 ‰ and 1.3 ‰) and nitrogen (ε = 3.5 ‰ and 1.5 ‰). Dissolved organic nitrogen of stream water degraded similarly across all experiments (k = 1.8 × 10−2 d−1), and turnover rates were an order of magnitude higher than recent rates reported for lake water. Nitrate concentration in the solute increased by an average 35 % during experiments and the nitrogen stable isotopic ratio of nitrate decreased by over 1 ‰ showing the potential of sediment and dissolved organic matter degradation to influence nitrate flux and its isotopic signal. The changes in runoff and sediment are the most active parts of river systems. Identifying the effect of precipitation, vegetation coverage (VC), landscape metrics, land-use and land-cover changes (LUCC) on runoff and sediment variations is essential for understanding hydrological processes and the environmental evolution mechanisms of watersheds. This study selected four watersheds located in the Qinling Mountains in China to quantify the effects of different driving forces on runoff and sediment variations at different scales. The results showed that VC increased significantly in the study watersheds (p < 0.05) by more than 16 % since 1990. Obvious increases in forest area were the main features of land use change after 2000. The annual sediment transport and sediment concentration in the wet season showed downward trends. The change of underlying surface contributed more than 58 % to reductions in runoff and sediment concentration in controlled watersheds in Xiangjiaping and Jingziguan. The factors influencing runoff and sediment variations displayed obvious spatial and temporal differences. The 2000 m buffer scale could better explain the runoff and sediment variations than other spatial scales. Rainfall and VC were the main factors affecting runoff and sediment variations at different spatial scales during the wet season, while the aggregation index at the watershed-scale and VC were the main influencing factors in the dry season. Moreover, the intersections between precipitation and landscape pattern, between precipitation and LUCC & VC, and between landscape pattern and LUCC & VC in the dry season and wet season were −31.9 %, −27.6 %, −29.0 % and −18.7 %, −11.1 % and −2.3 %, respectively. Among many 234U–238U disequilibrium applications, the " comminution age " approach enabled quantitative constraints of sediment transport timescale since the genesis of detrital sediment. This method requires a critical assumption regarding the initial bedrock (234U/238U) activity ratios (A 0), typically assumed to be in secular equilibrium (=1). However, this supposition needs further validation as more authors proposed preferential leaching as a vital mechanism that produces U-series disequilibrium among bedrocks. To address this uncertainty and to examine the extent of impacts responsible for the bedrock (234U/238U) disequilibrium, we compiled the published A 0 covering a wide range of lithologies. In this study, the global A 0 values ranged from 0.700 to 1.280, with an average of only 0.981 ± 0.070 (2σ; n = 160). This widely observed 234U deficiency among global bedrocks cannot be resulted from the direct α-recoil of 234U alone but is attributed to the preferential release of 234U from the microfissures created in rock diagenetic history. To further evaluate the impact of A 0 on comminution age calculation, the Zhuoshui River (Taiwan Island) sediment comminution age was re-calculated using the newly measured A 0 from the Zhuoshui River basin, which is 0.978 on average. The newly derived comminution age was nearly three-fifths shorter than the values estimated using A 0 = 1 in the previous study. We present detrital-zircon U–Pb geochronology from the Mississippi, Mobile, and Apalachicola rivers, as well as five beach and barrier island deposits to determine sediment sources, alongshore transport, and sediment mixing in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi River has a distinct age spectrum defined by prominent Cenozoic and Mesozoic populations coupled with minor Appalachian (490-270 Ma), Grenville (1200-900 Ma), Granite-Rhyolite (1500-1300 Ma), and Yavapai-Mazatzal (1800-1600 Ma) populations. The Mobile and Apalachicola rivers exhibit age spectra containing few to no Cenozoic grains, are proportionately dominated by Appalachian and Grenville populations, and have minor populations consisting of Iaptian Rifting/Gondwanan (850-550 Ma), Granite-Rhyolite, and Yavapai-Mazatzal ages. Comparison of U–Pb age spectra and inverse mixing models shows that beach and barrier island deposits are primarily derived of material from the Apalachicola River, with Mobile River contribution being dependent on geographic position west of Mobile Bay. Minor Mississippi River contribution in coastal deposits results from shelf bypass to deep marine sinks and when present is likely associated with recycling of Coastal Plain strata. Metamorphic zircon grain abundance (14–36%) in coastal deposits and chemical-age relationships to southern Appalachian eastern Blue Ridge and Inner Piedmont provinces corroborate Apalachicola and or Mobile river system provenance. Lacustrine mudstones developed in the synrift Wenchang and Enping formations are the major source rocks of the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB) and vary in both richness and quality of hydrocarbons generated. While organic productivity is known to have played a role in the development of these rocks, it has been mostly neglected in prior research. In this study, new zircon geochronological data from igneous intrusive and volcanic rocks in boreholes of the PRMB are used alongside compiled detrital zircon U-Pb ages from Paleogene sandstones to decipher the roles of sediment provenance and volcanic activity in the development of source rocks. The result suggests that during deposition of the Wenchang Formation (49-39 Ma), sediments were mainly derived from intrabasinal structural highs dominated by Yanshanian igneous rocks (180-90 Ma). Similarities in young ages (42–45 Ma) in volcanic and clastic units of the Wenchang Formation suggest volcanic activity concurrent with its deposition. Chemical weathering of the proximal source area together with volcanic materials provided abundant nutrients for the basin and enhanced the primary organic productivity, resulting in the development of high-quality lacustrine source rocks, derived mainly from plankton. In contrast, the detrital zircon provenance of the Enping Formation (39-33 Ma) suggests sediments were derived from the South China Block (SCB), far to the north, with complicated lithologies and more older zircon grains. The long-distance transport of SCB sediments diluted the productive nutrition conditions of the larger and shallower lakes, and introduced organic matter derived from higher terrestrial plants. The boom in water infrastructure in the Mekong Basin has raised concerns over the annual supply of water and sediment among its riparian communities. By consolidating various datasets, continuous series of sediment load data were estimated for several stations located within the Lower Mekong Basin. At Chiang Saen in Thailand, the nearest station to the Chinese dams, the average sediment load was 79 ± 32 Mt./yr during the pre-dam period of 1965–1991. However, from 2010 to 2019 – during which a series of mega-dams were built in China – the sediment load decreased drastically by 84 % to only 12.5 ± 4.6 Mt./yr. This phenomenon of reduced annual sediment load during the mega-dam era (2010–2019) as compared to during the pre-dam era (1965–1991) can be observed at stations downstream from Luang Prabang (−53 %) to Nong Khai (−62 %) to Khong Chiam (−33 %). One of the drivers of this sediment load crisis is the rapid development of upstream dams. Especially after 2003, Chinese dams have reduced sediment supply to the downstream Mekong Basin severely. Concurrently, there was an increase in sediment contribution from the stretch of the Mekong River from Chiang Saen to Khong Chiam. A positive outcome of this increased sediment contribution was its buffering effect against the reduction in sediment load from the Chinese part of the Mekong Basin. Although sediment load at Kratie – the gateway station before the alluvial stretch comprising the Cambodian floodplains and Vietnam Mekong Delta – decreased from 78 ± 22 Mt./yr (1995–2009) to only 60 ± 21 Mt./yr (2010–2019), the reduction would have been higher without the increased sediment from the Chiang Saen – Khong Chiam stretch. In this study, we quantified spatial patterns of sediment dynamics in a watershed of 311 km 2 over an extreme storm event using watershed modeling and statistical analyses. First, we calibrated a watershed model, Dynamic Watershed Simulation Model (DWSM) by comparing the predicted with calculated hydrograph and sedigraph at the outlet for this event. Then we predicted values of event runoff volume ( V ), peak flow ( Q peak ), and two types of event sediment yields for lumped morphological units that contain 42 overland elements and 21 channel segments within the study watershed. Two overland elements and the connected channel segment form a first-order subwatershed, several of which constitute a larger nested subwatershed. Next we examined (i) the relationships between these variables and area ( A ), precipitation ( P ), mean slope ( S ), soil erodibility factor, and percent of crop and pasture lands for all overland elements (i.e., the small spatial scale, SSS), and (ii) those between sediment yield, Q peak , A , P , and event runoff depth ( h ) for the first-order and nested subwatersheds along two main creeks of the study watershed (i.e., the larger spatial scales, LSS). We found that at the SSS, sediment yield was nonlinearly well related to A and P , but not Q peak and h ; whereas at the LSS, linear relationships between sediment yield and Q peak existed, so did the Q peak – A , and Q peak – P relationships. This linearity suggests the increased connectivity from the SSS to LSS, which was caused by ignorance of channel processes within overland elements. It also implies that sediment was transported at capacity during the extreme event. Although climate change projections underline the need for the creation of integrated strategies to protect water resources in the semiarid, sediment source apportionment data remain scant for this environment. Accordingly, we evaluated sediment source contributions in one of the most relevant Brazilian semiarid catchments by combining geochemical and colour tracer properties. In doing so, we explored the applicability of colour tracers as a low-cost alternative to the use of time-consuming and costly properties, such as geochemical tracers. Two source classification schemes were used based on environmentally contrasting regions within the catchment (upper, middle and lower catchment parts) and land use (Caatinga biome - natural vegetation, unpaved roads, and channel banks). Suspended sediments (SS) and bed sediments (BS) were used as target sediment. A total of 660 individual source material samples were collected and composited. Geochemical and colour tracers were measured on the source and target sediment samples and used as potential fingerprints to discriminate and quantify the sediment source contributions. The geochemical tracers provided weak source discrimination based on land use. However, combining geochemical and colour tracers improved the final outputs. Using the MixSIAR model, the lower catchment contributed more sediment than the other regional sources. The Caatinga (SS = 49 %; BS = 47 %) contributed more sediment than channel banks (SS = 35 %; BS = 39 %). Overall, our results suggest that the recovery and conservation of the Caatinga vegetation and the stabilization of channel banks, especially in the lower catchment part, are critical for improving sediment supply control in the semiarid study basin. • We determined the parameters of monthly sediment rating curve (SRC) in karst watersheds. • The SRC parameters of karst watersheds are compared with those of other watersheds in China. • PLS-SEM can decouple the direct and indirect effects of factors on SRC parameters. • Lithology and dam construction complicated the effect of climate and vegetation on SRC parameters. One of the largest contiguous karst areas in the world is southwest China, where special geological conditions, shallow soil layers, the frequency of precipitation extremes, unreasonable land use, and dam construction have rendered the relationship between water discharge and sediment load increasingly complex. Few studies have been devoted to this region to clarify the potential influencing factors of the water–sediment relationship on a monthly basis. Correspondingly, the present study evaluated the temporal variations in sediment rating curves (SRCs: Qs = a Q b , where Q s is the sediment concentration or load, Q is the water discharge, the coefficient a and index b are fitted parameters) and decoupled the effects of climate change and vegetation dynamics on SRC parameters using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). To these ends, 2003 to 2017 data on the monthly water discharge, sediment load, climatic and vegetation factors of six karst watersheds were collected and analyzed. No significant trends in interannual variations of SRC parameters occurred. The PLS-SEM showed that the combined effects of climate and vegetation explained 18% to 43% and 8% to 57% of the variations in coefficient a and index b , respectively. In most cases, however, no significant relationship was found among climate, vegetation-related factors, and the SRC parameters. Special hydrogeological conditions and dam construction in the area increasingly complicated the sediment transport process, thus potentially weakening the influence of climate and vegetation on the SRC parameters. The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in March 2011 resulted in the deposition of large quantities of radionuclides, such as 134 Cs and 137 Cs, over parts of eastern Japan. Since then high levels of radioactive contamination have been detected in large areas, including forests, agricultural land, and residential areas. Due to the strong adsorption capability of radiocesium to soil particles, radiocesium migrates with eroded sediments, follows the surface flow paths, and is delivered to more populated downstream regions and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. It is therefore important to understand the transport of contaminated sediments in the hydrological system and to predict changes in the spatial distribution of radiocesium concentrations by taking the land-surface processes related to sediment migration into consideration. In this study, we developed a distributed model to simulate the transport of water and contaminated sediment in a watershed hydrological system, and applied this model to a partially forested mountain catchment located in an area highly contaminated by the radioactive fallout. Observed discharge, sediment concentration, and cesium concentration measured from June 2011 until December 2012 were used for calibration of model parameters. The simulated discharge and sediment concentration both agreed well with observed values, while the cesium concentration was underestimated in the initial period following the accident. This result suggests that the leaching of radiocesium from the forest canopy, which was not considered in the model, played a significant role in its transport from the catchment. Based on the simulation results, we quantified the long-term fate of radiocesium over the study area and estimated that the effective half-life of 137 Cs deposited in the study area will be approximately 22 y due to the export of contaminated sediment by land-surface processes, and the amount of 137 Cs remaining in the catchment will be reduced to 39% of the initial total within 30 y after contamination. Tropical river systems, wherein much of the drainage basin experiences tropical climate are strongly influenced by the annual and inter-annual variations of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and its derivative monsoonal winds. Rivers draining rainforests and those subjected to tropical monsoons typically demonstrate high runoff, but with notable exceptions. High rainfall intensities from burst weather events are common in the tropics. The release of rain-forming aerosols also appears to uniquely increase regional rainfall, but its geomorphic manifestation is hard to detect. Compared to other more temperate river systems, climate-driven tropical rivers do not appear to transport a disproportionate amount of particulate load to the world's oceans, and their warmer, less viscous waters are less competent. Tropical biogeochemical environments do appear to influence the sedimentary environment. Multiple-year hydrographs reveal that seasonality is a dominant feature of most tropical rivers, but the rivers of Papua New Guinea are somewhat unique being less seasonally modulated. Modeled riverine suspended sediment flux through global catchments is used in conjunction with observational data for 35 tropical basins to highlight key basin scaling relationships. A 50 year, daily model simulation illuminates how precipitation, relief, lithology and drainage basin area affect sediment load, yield and concentration. Local sediment yield within the Amazon is highest near the Andes, but decreases towards the ocean as the river's discharge is diluted by water influxes from sediment-deprived rainforest tributaries. Bedload is strongly affected by the hydraulic gradient and discharge, and the interplay of these two parameters predicts foci of net bedload deposition or erosion. Predicting the potential impact of fires on runoff and soil erosion requires distributed hydrological modeling methods. This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a rainfall-runoff model, to investigate the hydrological consequences of forest fires and their impact on sediment load under different burnt scenarios. For the pre-fire (baseline) scenario, the watershed is calibrated by using the measured discharge and suspended sediment concentration data from the weather station during the time step to estimate post-fire changes at the sub-catchment scale. The total water and sediment yield for the selected sub-catchment in the post-fire scenario with the highest spatial distribution of forest fire, due to the excessive surface runoff (an increase of 14.5%) increased significantly, resulted in 6.5 times increase in sediment yield. The results obtained from the study indicate a significant increase in sediment transport into the stream in the post-fire scenario. A large volume of soil losses occurred during the time step. In contrast, due to removing trees and vegetation from the ground, less evapotranspiration and infiltration occurred in selected sub-catchment areas after forest fires. In terms of watershed management, understanding the consequences of forest fires on hydrological services will be an effective method for sediment budget control. Therefore, applying the rainfall-runoff and erosion models for the watershed with developing plausible forest fire scenarios can be a productive method to deal with the threats and hydrological risks such as soil erosion and sediment transfer to the downstream environment. Recent studies confirm that more than 50% of the sediment load of the Brahmaputra River originates from the Namche Barwa massif, whose area is just 2–3% of the total drainage area. This sediment flux anomaly cannot be attributed to only rapid erosion caused by extreme outburst floods because the young cooling age population of the Namche Barwa source sediment is disproportionally high even in the modern sediment transported by normal river flows. We propose a new mechanism for this anomaly by integrating new findings of palaeoflood sedimentary records with previous field surveys around Yigong Lake, a residual dammed lake in the lower Yigong River which is a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River, in the southeastern margin of Tibet. The magnitude of the palaeoflood event upstream of the lake, with a peak discharge of 64,500 m3/s estimated by using hydraulic reconstruction approaches, is far smaller than that of downstream flood events. Tibetan source sediment transport is truncated by the juxtaposition of broad valleys and barrier dams on the edge of the highly exhumated region with cooling ages of <2 Ma. This juxtaposition has three effects: trapping large amounts of the upstream sediment load, flattening the hydrograph of upstream extreme floods, and enlarging the magnitude of downstream outburst floods. Changes in river regime especially a dramatic reduction in sediment delivery increase challenges of the morphological and ecological sustainability of river deltas. In evaluating deltaic risks and sustainable solutions, researches are often limited to single geomorphic units of the deltaic system, and investigations of sediment source to sink transfer at river deltas under recent river regimes are often missing. The Yellow River Delta (YRD) presents as a typical megadelta under stressors induced by changing environments. This study utilizes a period of 20-yr high-resolution topography data of the deltaic channel and its subaqueous delta to investigate sediment transport and source to sink process by integrated methods of field measurements and numerical simulations. The results indicate that the deltaic channel has transitioned from net accretion to erosion after the implementation of the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) in 2002. The active river mouth experienced a slow accretion phase since the river channel diverted to Qing 8 channel, with a reduced vertical deposition rate of 0.15 m/yr, whilst its adjacent Gudong littoral zone had a −0.11 m/yr erosion rate. Under the new fluvial regime, the river-borne suspended sediment tends to transport southwards to the Laizhou Bay, followed by the river-derived sediment transport eastward and northward to the offshore delta. It is clear that with the continued human activities in the region, the YRD is at the potential state of deltaic transition both in the deltaic channel and its subaqueous delta. This transition is believed to be beneficial to the deltaic channel stability, but it could significantly impact on the geomorphic and ecologic sustainability of the entire deltaic system. • The Daling River, as a typical small mountainous river, responds strongly to instantaneous extreme flood events. • Restored vegetation is the root cause of the sharp decline of sediment flux, not reservoirs. • Vegetation has altered the characteristics of sediment transport. Understanding the riverine sediment load regime is crucial to sustainably managing fluvial-deltaic ecosystem restoration. However, in studies on global river sediment transport characteristics, small mountainous rivers (SMRs), transporting 45% of the global sediment flux into the sea, have been largely ignored. Furthermore, SMRs have hydrologic characteristics of instantaneous enormous fluxes under extreme climate, but the research on their driving factors affecting sediment transport is insufficient. Partial derivation method and multiple double mass curves were applied to a small mountainous river in North China, the Daling River to study how the three most variable factors—precipitation, vegetation coverage, and reservoirs—have quantitatively controlled sediment flux in the basin and its subregions in the last 50 years. The results of the two methods showed that the 78.55% reduction in sediment flux from 1961–1979 to 1980–2015 was due primarily to restored vegetation coverage (50.42%-61.11%), followed by reservoirs (18.13–44.09%) and precipitation (5.49–22.34%) in the Daling River Basin (DRB) and its subregions. The restored vegetation in the DRB has intercepted a large amount of sediment, reducing the sediment flux transported to the reservoirs. Besides, the Daling River releases enormous amounts of sediment during heavy rainfalls. However, increasing vegetation coverage in recent years has changed the transport characteristics of sediment into temperate changes in runoff and sediment flux under extreme climatic conditions; thus this river provides a useful example of studying the characteristics of sediment transport controlled by nature and human activities against extreme climate conditions. In the DRB, topography, lithology, and vegetation density are the motivators for the differences in sediment flux and its change rates, from upstream to downstream. In the past decade, sediment connectivity has become a widely recognized characteristic of a geomorphic system. However, the quantification of functional connectivity (i.e. connectivity which arises due to the actual occurrence of sediment transport processes) and its variation over space and time is still a challenge. In this context, this study assesses the effects of expected future phenomena in the context of climate change (i.e. glacier retreat, permafrost degradation or meteorological extreme events) on sediment transport dynamics in a glacierised Alpine basin. The study area is the Sulden river basin (drainage area 130 km2) in the Italian Alps, which is composed of two geomorphologically diverse sub-basins. Based on graph theory, we evaluated the spatio-temporal variations in functional connectivity in these two sub-basins. The graph-object, obtained by manually mapping sediment transport processes between landforms, was adapted to 6 different hydro-meteorological scenarios, which derive from combining base, heatwave and rainstorm conditions with snowmelt and glacier-melt periods. For each scenario and each sub-basin, the sediment transport network and related catchment characteristics were analysed. To compare the effects of the scenarios on functional connectivity, we introduced a connectivity degree, calculated based on the area of the landforms involved in sediment cascades. Results indicate that the area of the basin connected to its outlet in terms of sediment transport might feature a six-fold increase in case of rainstorm conditions compared to "average" meteorological conditions assumed for the base scenario. Surface runoff, channel activation and sediment transport processes in desert environments have been convincingly shown to strongly depend on the duration and intensity of local and convective rainfall events. Among these environments, the Atacama, considered the driest desert on Earth, is situated in a remote and rugged area, where documentation of historical and recent hydro-sedimentary processes is rare. We characterize the hydrological processes in an endorheic watershed of the Atacama's Altiplano Desert, where the occurrence of flash floods was evaluated on event-based signatures of water and sediment in a small ephemeral playa. Twelve pits were dug in the playa, with five identified event sediment couplets, each corresponding to computed flood volumes that gave rise to transport and depositional events occurring between 1978 and 2019. Detailed topography allowed reconstruction of a 3D terrain model, from which we estimated a 11.3 t/yr/km2 local historic sediment yield. The timing of the older identified events did not match local rainfall records, and proved to be uncorrelated with occurrences of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This suggests a high spatial patchiness of rainfall events in terms of depth and intensity, and implies that small playa records are not necessarily always helpful in reconstructing the regional climatic history of the recent past. The sediment concentration and volume of the reconstructed hypercontracted events are not well corrected with the magnitude of the rainfall event, suggesting the important role played by variable sediment availability and connectivity at basin scale. This spatiotemporal variability plays a major role in understanding the present and historic hydro-sedimentary processes in the Atacama's altiplano. • Sediment load decreased by about 88% in the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin. • The causes of sediment loads variations were explored. • Human activity contributes about 93% to sediment reduction in recent two decades. • ENSO is a dominant teleconnection pattern for explaining the sediment variations. The erosion, deposition and transport processes of sediment alter the basin surface environment, and affect the function and structure of ecosystems. The sediment loads showed a significant decreased trend under the impacts of climate changes and human activities in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). Understanding the sediment transport patterns and causes is a prerequisite of sediment management and ecological restoration of the river basins. This study explored the sediment long-term fluctuation characteristics and the influences of various driving factors on the sediment variations based on the sediment loads data from the source region to the delta of the YRB. We found that the sediment fluxes showed a significant decreasing trend in the mainstream and tributaries of the YRB. The average sediment loads of the upper basin decreased to 42.88 ± 26.14 Mt/yr in 2000–2019, which is less than 30% of the average value recorded before 1968. Compared with 1950–1968, the sediment loads in the middle and lower reaches decreased by approximately 88% and 89% from 2000 to 2019, respectively. In addition, the middle reaches of the Yellow River (YR) is in a persistent degradation state prior to 2000, the source-to-sink relationships of sediment downstream the Huayuankou station are changing frequently due to the operation of Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs. According to the sediment rating curves (SRCs), the sediment transport regimes have changed at time scale along the mainstream of the YR in recent three decades. Moreover, the human activities (reservoir constructions, water-soil conservation, etc.) are the dominant factors for explaining the progressively reduction trend of sediment loads, the contributions of human activities to sediment reduction was approximately 93% in recent two decades in the YRB. Precipitation and temperature are the predominant meteorological factors affecting sediment variations, and ENSO is the dominant teleconnection pattern for explaining the multiscale characteristics of sediment loads in the lower reaches of the YRB. As evidenced by recent earthquakes in Chi-Chi, Wenchuan and Gorkha, seismic triggered landslides can have a major impact on river basins and landscape evolution. The location of landslides with respect to river channels plays an important role in post-earthquake sediment dynamics. As well as direct impacts such as damming rivers, the connectivity of landslides to the fluvial network can alter how quickly sediment is moved and stored within river basins. Such "landslide-landscape relationships" are dominated by factors including geology, hydrological and geomorphic characteristics of the landscape, the location of landslides, and the geometric properties (e.g., size and runout length) of landslides. These factors will therefore control the magnitude and retention of associated sediment transportation. But key characteristics of this relationship and how it controls sediment dynamics are poorly understood. In this research, we probed the impact of landslide location on sediment dynamics and the response of sediment yields through numerical modelling. We modified the landscape evolution model, CAESAR-Lisflood (CL) to enable sediment from landslides to be tracked throughout the basin, and to include spatial changes in landslide failure angle. The model was then used to investigate impact of the different landslide location scenarios on basin morphology and sediment yields. Using a study area in the Hongxi river basin, four different regions (upstream-high, upstream-low, downstream-high, and downstream-low) were determined in terms of the distance to main stream for an upstream and downstream basin - and in each region landslides were generated for twenty times at random locations. The model results indicate that the location of landslides could alter the fluvial sediment yields and spatial pattern of the sediment dynamics, with low location landslides being more likely to link or connect to the drainage system (higher connectivity) thus leading to greater sediment yields at basin outlet. Whereas material generated by high location landslides tended to accumulate on hillslopes, which could lead to a lag sediment evacuation from the basin. Simulations also show a big latency of sediment yield between upstream and downstream scenarios, which is largely due to the differences of the flow length from landslides source to the basin outlet. Abstract: This study reports the concentrations of 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from managed burning of moorland vegetation and compares them to PAH in catchment vegetation, underlying peats, head water suspended sediment (HSS), stream water and reservoir sediment cores. Total PAH ranged from 203 to 11,112μg/kg in the blanket peats, 101–290μg/kg in the fresh moorland vegetation, 4186μg/kg at the burnt site, 17,439μg/kg in the HSS, 56ng/L in the stream water and 987 to 7346μg/kg in the reservoir sediments. No total or individual PAH concentrations exceeded the published sediment quality guidelines. The perylene content of selected moorland vegetation (sphagnum, heather and bilberry) ranged from 10 to 18% as compared to only 2% for the sediment hosted PAH. A comparison of whole and <250μm fractions from the burnt surface layer revealed a near threefold increase in PAH concentration in the fine fraction and a change in the PAH distribution such that naphthalene>>phenanthrene>2-methylnaphthalene. Elevated total PAH contents were observed close to the blanket peat sediment surface (0–10cm) and then declined at greater depths. The high PAH content of the HSS was attributed to the high sorption capacity of the organic-rich particles (TOC 25.8% (wt/wt)). The distribution of individual PAH in reservoir cores and HSS was consistent and the results of the principal component analysis and isomeric ratios suggest mainly pyrolytic inputs, from either vegetation burning and coal combustion. A comparison of the reservoir core PAH profiles shows that the source(s) have remained largely unchanged since the reservoir construction in 1929A.D. reflecting consistent moorland management practices. Abstract: Forest harvesting activities affect various hydrogeomorphic processes in forest terrain, including increases in occurrence of mass movements (i.e., landslides and debris flows), and changes in sediment transport rate in channels. Thus, the influence of harvesting on these processes needs to be assessed to protect aquatic ecosystems. In steep terrain with frequent mass movement, relationships between rainfall magnitude and frequency of mass movements associated with forest harvesting are needed to develop improved strategies for disaster prevention. We examined the effects of forest harvesting on the frequency of mass movements in the steep Sanko catchment (central Japan) using aerial photographs for six different years covering 1976 to 2003. We also investigated the spatial distribution of sediment stored in the system as well as sediment transport rate in selected subcatchments by field surveys. Landslides occur during moderate rainfall events (return period of daily rainfall<10years) in younger forests (<25years after harvesting), whereas the threshold magnitude of rainfall for landslides is higher in older forests (>25years after harvesting). The occurrence of mass movements substantially altered the volume of sediment storage in the channel that links sediment supply from hillslopes with sediment yield downstream. However, the volume and spatial distribution of sediment deposits in headwater channels were not clearly related to forest age because of the redistribution and evacuation of sediment by debris flows. Bedload transport rate was highly affected by sediment storage volume, whereas suspended sediment concentration was affected by the area of exposed sediment along channels that was carved by debris flows. Thus, the effect of harvesting on hydrogeomorphic processes cannot be estimated simply by the elapsed time after forest harvesting; rainfall magnitude and the history of mass movements need to be considered to better understand these linkages. Abstract: The tropics of northern Australia have received relatively little attention with regard to the impact of soil erosion on the many large river systems that are an important part of Australia''s water resource, especially given the high potential for erosion when long dry seasons are followed by intense wet season rain. Here we use 137Cs concentrations to determine the erosion processes supplying sediment to two major northern Australian Rivers; the Daly River (Northern Territory), and the Mitchell River (Queensland). We also present data from five sediment samples collected from a 100km reach of the Cloncurry River, a major tributary of the Flinders River (Queensland). Concentrations of 137Cs in the surface soil and subsurface (channel banks and gully) samples were used to derive ‘best fit’ probability density functions describing their distributions. These modelled distributions are then used to estimate the relative contribution of these two components to the river sediments. Our results are consistent with channel and gully erosion being the dominant source of sediment, with more than 90% of sediment transported along the main stem of these rivers originating from subsoil. We summarize the findings of similar studies on tropical Australian rivers and conclude that the primary source of sediment delivered to these systems is gully and channel bank erosion. Previously, as a result of catchment scale modelling, sheet-wash and rill erosion was considered to be the major sediment source in these rivers. Identifying the relative importance of sediment sources, as shown in this paper, will provide valuable information for land management planning in the region. Abstract: The ability to predict the effects of dam removal in highly sediment-filled systems is increasingly important as the number of such dam removal cases continues to grow. The cost and potential impacts of dam removal are site-specific and can vary substantially depending on local conditions. Of specific concern in sediment-impacted removals is the volume and rate of reservoir deposit erosion. The complexity and potential accuracy of modeling methods used to forecast the effects of such dam removals vary substantially. Current methods range from predictions based on simple analysis of pre-dam channel geometry to sophisticated data-intensive, three-dimensional numerical models. In the work presented here, we utilize data collected from past dam removals to develop an additional tool for predicting the rate and volume of sediment deposit erosion. Through the analysis of sediment, discharge, deposit, removal timeline, channel, and watershed data, in conjunction with post-removal monitoring data from a wide range of dam removal projects, some significant trends in the evolution of reservoir deposits following dam removal can be seen. Results indicate that parameters such as median grain size, level of cohesion, spatial variability of the deposit, and removal timeline are among the most influential factors in determining the rate and volume of sediment erosion. By comparing local conditions of dams and reservoirs slated for removal with those of past removals, we hope that predictions of the rate and volume of sediment deposit erosion can be usefully constrained. Abstract: Using discharge and sediment data collected from 23 events between 2008 and 2010 in a 311-km2 watershed of central New York, we investigated event sediment dynamics of the studied watershed. After showing the statistical difference of the data in different seasons, we examined the detailed hysteresis patterns of all events. Spring events had figure eight with anticlockwise (figure-8/AC), clockwise (C), anticlockwise (AC), and complicated patterns. Summer events had C, AC, figure-8/AC, figure-8/C, and complicated patterns. Fall and winter events had the same patterns as those in summer, as well as a weak loop pattern. The diversity of patterns within and between seasons suggests that detailed processes of sediment transport were not only complicated during one event but also varied from season to season. Although hysteresis analysis failed to identify these detailed processes and the associated sediment sources in such a relatively large watershed, it successfully revealed a common feature dominating the transport processes: event sediment transport was generally supply limited. Further analysis on the correlation between event sediment yield (SSY e ) and event peak discharge (Q peak ) indicated that (i) events with clockwise patterns tended to have more SSY e than those with other patterns for the same Q peak and (ii) data from all events may be statistically well described by a single SSY e –Q peak equation, regardless of hysteresis patterns. This equation (i) reveals that complicated event transport processes may be lumped into a simple process over events and (ii) reflects the general supply-limited nature identified by hysteresis analysis. Using this equation and the magnitude–frequency analysis, we further discovered that in the past 21years, sediment was mainly transported by more frequent but relatively small discharges with the recurrence interval no more than 0.5year. Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate four metrics to define the spatially variable (regionalised) hillslope sediment delivery ratio (HSDR). A catchment model that accounted for gully and streambank erosion and floodplain deposition was used to isolate the effects of hillslope gross erosion and hillslope delivery from other landscape processes. The analysis was carried out at the subcatchment (~40km2) and the cell scale (400m2) in the Avon-Richardson catchment (3300km2), south-east Australia. The four landscape metrics selected for the study were based on sediment travel time, sediment transport capacity, flux connectivity, and residence time. Model configurations with spatially-constant or regionalised HSDR were calibrated against sediment yield measured at five gauging stations. The impact of using regionalised HSDR was evaluated in terms of improved model performance against measured sediment yields in a nested monitoring network, the complexity and data requirements of the metric, and the resulting spatial relationship between hillslope erosion and landscape factors in the catchment and along hillslope transects. The introduction of a regionalised HSDR generally improved model predictions of specific sediment yields at the subcatchment scale, increasing model efficiency from 0.48 to >0.6 in the best cases. However, the introduction of regionalised HSDR metrics at the cell scale did not improve model performance. The flux connectivity was the most promising metric because it showed the largest improvement in predicting specific sediment yields, was easy to implement, was scale-independent and its formulation was consistent with sedimentological connectivity concepts. These properties make the flux connectivity metric preferable for applications to catchments where climatic conditions can be considered homogeneous, i.e. in small-medium sized basins (up to approximately 3000km2 for Australian conditions, with the Avon-Richardson catchment being at the upper boundary). The residence time metric improved model assessment of sediment yields and enabled accounting for climatic variability on sediment delivery, but at the cost of greater complexity and data requirements; this metric might be more suitable for application in catchments with important climatic gradients, i.e. large basins and at the regional scale. The application of a regionalised HSDR metric did not increase data or computational requirements substantially, and is recommended to improve assessment of hillslope erosion in empirical, semi-lumped erosion modelling applications. Abstract: To improve the modeling of water quality in watersheds, a model is developed to predict resuspension of Escherichia coli from sediment beds in streams. The resuspension rate is expressed as the product of the concentration of E. coli attached to sediment particles and an erosion rate adapted from work on sediment transport. The model uses parameter values mostly taken from previous work, and it accounts for properties of the flow through the bottom shear stress and properties of the sediment through the critical shear stresses for cohesive and non-cohesive sediment. Predictions were compared to resuspension rates inferred from a steady mass balance applied to measurements at sixteen locations in a watershed. The model’s predictions matched the inferred rates well, especially when the diameter of particles to which E. coli attach was allowed to depend on the bottom shear stress. The model’s sensitivity to the parameters depends on the contributions of particle packing and binding effects of clay to the critical shear stress. For the current data set, the uncertainty in the predictions is controlled by the concentration of E. coli attached to sediment particles and the slope used to estimate the bottom shear stress. Abstract: The fate and transport of mercury are of critical concern in lowland floodplains and wetlands worldwide, especially those with a history of upstream mining that increases the mobility of both dissolved and sediment-bound Hg in watersheds. A mass budget of total mercury (THg) quantifies sources and storage for particular areas — knowledge that is required for understanding of management options in lowland floodplains. In order to assess contaminant risk in the largest flood-control bypass, prime wetland, and restoration target in the Sacramento River basin, we estimated empirical relationships between THg, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and streamflow (Q) for each of the major inputs and outputs using data from various publicly available sources. These relationships were improved by incorporating statistical representations of the dynamics of seasonal and intra-flood exhaustion (hysteresis) of sediment and mercury. Using continuous records of Q to estimate SSC suspended sediment flux and SSC to estimate THg flux, we computed the net transfer of sediment-adsorbed mercury through the Yolo Bypass over a decade, 1993–2003. Flood control weirs spilling Sacramento River floodwaters into the bypass deliver ~75% of the water and ~50% of the river''s suspended sediment load, while one Coast Range tributary of the bypass, Cache Creek, contributes twice the THg load of the mainstem Sacramento. Although estimated sediment flux entering Yolo Bypass is balanced by efflux to the Sacramento/San Francisco Bay-Delta, there is much evidence of deposition and remobilization of sediment in Yolo Bypass during flooding. These factors point to the importance of the bypass as sedimentary reservoir and as an evolving substrate for biogeochemical processing of heavy metals. The estimates of mercury flux suggest net deposition of ~500kg in the 24,000ha floodway over a decade, dominated by two large floods, representing a storage reservoir for this important contaminant. Abstract: Following construction of the Three Gorges Dam, many farmers resettled in surrounding mountain areas and cultivated marginal lands, which are mostly on steep slopes with soil of poor structure. In general, high soil loss rates occur during intense storms. Therefore, soil erosion is a major environmental problem in the Three Gorges area (TGA) of China. Understanding and quantifying sediment load is important for sustainable agriculture and the environment in this region. This paper analyzes the relationships between rainfall, runoff, and sediment transport in the Wangjiaqiao watershed. Strong seasonal and monthly variability in sediment load was found. Sediment was strongly transported during summer months, a period when frequent flood events of high magnitude and intensity occurred. Analysis of the relationships between precipitation, discharge and sediment transport at an individual event scale showed significant correlations between total precipitation, peak discharge, total water yield, maximum 30min rainfall intensity, and sediment-related variables. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that rainfall amount is the major cause of runoff, while events producing a large discharge in a short time play an important role in inducing severe soil erosion. During 40 flood events, three different types of hysteretic loops were observed: clockwise (28 events, 70%), figure-eight (5 events, 12.5%), and complex (7 events, 17.5%). Abstract: Baseline data on rates of sediment transport provide useful information on the inherent variability of stream processes and may be used to assess departure in channel form or process from disturbances. In August 2000, wildfire burned portions of the Little Granite Creek watershed near Bondurant, WY where bedload and suspended sediment measurements had been collected during 13 previous runoff seasons. This presented an opportunity to quantify increases in sediment loads associated with a large-scale natural disturbance. The first three years post-fire were warm and dry, with low snowpacks and few significant summer storms. Despite relatively low flows during the first runoff season, the estimated sediment load was about five times that predicted from regression of data from the pre-burn record. Increased sediment loading occurred during the rising limb and peak of snowmelt (54%) and during the few summer storms (44%). While high during the first post-fire year, total annual sediment yield decreased during the next two years, indicating an eventual return to baseline levels. The results from this sediment monitoring lacked some of the more dramatic responses that have been observed in other watersheds following fire. In other environments, moderate-to-high intensity rainstorms caused significant flooding, widespread debris flows and channel incision and aggradation. A few moderate intensity storms (<2year recurrence interval) occurred in the Little Granite Creek watershed, but they did not trigger this type of response. Instead, ash and charcoal rich discharges (herein described as “blackwater flows”) and heavily sediment laden flows were observed without physical evidence of debris flows, as defined by channel incision into previously unchanneled areas. Speculatively, the sedimentation pattern and geomorphic response in Little Granite Creek may be fairly typical of stream responses to wildfire during times of continued drought and in the absence of widespread, significant rainfall, representing one type of response on a continuum of effects following wildfire. Abstract: Cosmogenic nuclide-based denudation rates and published erosion rates from recent river gauging in the Napo River basin (Peruvian Amazonia) are used to decipher erosion and sedimentation processes along a 600 km long transect from the headwaters to the lowlands. The sediment-producing headwaters to the Napo floodplain are the volcanically active Ecuadorian Andes, which discharge sediment at a cosmogenic nuclide-based denudation rate of 0.49 ± 0.12 mm/yr. This denudation rate was calculated from an average 10Be nuclide concentration of 2.2 ± 0.5 × 104 at/g(Qz) that was measured in bedload-derived quartz. Within the Napo lowlands, a significant drop in trunk stream 10Be nuclide concentrations relative to the Andean hinterland is recorded, with an average concentration of 1.2 ± 0.5 × 104 at/g(Qz). This nuclide concentration represents a mixture between the 10Be nuclide concentration of eroded floodplain deposits, and that of sediment eroded from the Andean hinterland that is now carried in the trunk stream. Evidence for addition of sediment from the floodplain to the trunk stream is provided by published decadal-scale sediment flux measurements from gauging stations operated in the Napo basin, from which an increase from 12 × 106 t/yr at the outflow of the Andes to ∼47 × 106 t/yr at the confluence with the Solimões (upper Amazon River) is recorded. Therefore, approximately 35 × 106 t of floodplain sediment are added annually to the active Napo trunk stream. Combined with our nuclide concentration measurements, we can estimate that the eroded floodplain deposits yield a nuclide concentration of ∼0.9 × 104 at/g(Qz) only. Under steady state surface erosion conditions, this nuclide concentration would translate to a denudation rate of the floodplain of ∼0.47 mm/yr. However, we have no geomorphologic explanation for this high denudation rate within the low relief floodplain and thus suggest that this low-nuclide concentrated sediment is Andean-derived and would have been deposited in the floodplain at a time when erosion rates of the Andes were elevated. Therefore, the recently eroded floodplain sediment provides an Andean “paleo denudation rate” of 1.2 mm/yr that was calculated for high Andean production rates. A likely period for elevated erosion rates is the LGM, where climate and vegetation cover of the Andes differed from that of the Holocene. A possible cause for the erosion of the floodplain is the tectonic uplift of the Eastern Andes, which progressively shifts the Napo River northwards. Abstract: The natural hydrologic regime of the Changjiang (Yangtze River) in China has been disturbed considerably by intensified human activities over the past five decades. In this study, sediment rating curves were analyzed based on monthly data of water discharge and suspended-sediment concentration at stations in the upper (Yichang station), middle (Hankou station) and lower (Datong station) reaches of the Changjiang in different periods from 1955 to 2007. Temporal and spatial variations of the sediment rating curves were analyzed with respect to the impact of human activities and watershed characteristics. Results indicate that human disturbances have had a substantial impact on sediment rating parameters, with the magnitude of the impact related to the scale of the river sections. As indicated by the sediment rating parameters, the sediment transport regimes between the upper and the mid-lower reaches differ significantly. In particular, the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam in 2003 changed the sediment transport regimes in the upper and mid-lower reaches of Changjiang into similar regimes characterized by a decrease in the sediment transport capacity of high water discharge. Furthermore, the sediment rating curve at the Datong station in 1955–1968 was applied to estimate the potential sediment load (1969–2007) in the absence of human influences. The mean annual sediment deficit caused by human activities has increased from 80Mt/yr (1969–1985) to 250Mt/yr (2003–2007). This indicates that intensified human activities in the Changjiang basin, especially the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, have altered the natural sediment transport process, and have thus become a dominant force in Changjiang sediment delivery to the sea. Abstract: Catchment scale suspended sediment (SS) transport studies in northwest Spain are of special interest as little research at this scale has been done in this region. However, the role of sediments in the transfer of nutrients and contaminants to coastal areas in this region has been highlighted. Data were collected from the Corbeira catchment during a 3-year period and the variability in SS load at different temporal scales (within-events variability, monthly/seasonal, and annual) was analyzed. The statistical relationship between discharge and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) from samples obtained every 15days as well as during runoff events in October 2004 to September 2007 showed a marked scatter of points. Hence, the rating curve method does not seem appropriate to estimate SSC in this catchment. The results also demonstrated that at the within-events scale, most of the SS peaks preceded the discharge peaks (70% of runoff events), implying that zones nearby or well connected to the stream are the dominant sediment source areas. In some cases, rills and ephemeral gullies developed in cropland were the main source of sediment delivered to the stream. Furthermore, a reduction in SSC was observed in sequences of events, which can be mainly linked to a phenomenon of sediment exhaustion. At the seasonal scale, most of the total annual SS load was transported during the autumn months, the period in which, generally, the largest number of events occurred, while in the summer, total annual SS load was very low (<1%). At the annual scale, specific SS yield (SSY) ranged from 5.4 to 11.2Mg km-2 y-1. The variability in SSY was correlated with the number and magnitude of runoff events recorded yearly, since runoff events dominated SS transport and yield. Abstract: Understanding and quantifying sediment load is important in catchments draining highly erodible materials that eventually contribute to siltation of downstream reservoirs. Within this context, the suspended sediment transport and its temporal dynamics have been studied in the River Isábena (445 km2, south-central Pyrenees, Ebro basin) by means of direct sampling and turbidity recording during a 3-year dry period. The average flood-suspended sediment concentration was 8 g l−1, with maximum instantaneous values above 350 g l−1. The high scatter between discharge and suspended sediment concentrations (up to five orders of magnitude) has not permitted the use of rating curve methods to estimate the total load. Interpolation techniques yielded a mean annual sediment load of 184,253 t y−1 for the study period, with a specific yield of 414 t km−2 y−1. This value resembles those reported for small torrents in nearby mountainous environments and is the result of the high connectivity between the badland source areas and stream courses, a fact that maximises sediment conveyance through the catchment. Floods dominated the sediment transport and yield. However, sediment transport was more constant through time than that observed in Mediterranean counterparts; this can be attributed to the role of base flows that entrain fine sediment temporarily stored in the channel and force the river to carry high sediment concentrations (i.e., generally in the order of 0.5 g l−1), even under minimum flow conditions. Abstract: Pinpointing erosional ‘hot spots’ or sediment source areas within a watershed can be difficult because of the highly non-linear and episodic nature of effective runoff and sediment transport. Continuous monitoring of stream networks can provide insight into sediment source areas not possible from routine sampling by capturing episodic events and integrating entire storm events. This paper presents the results of a three-year study of spring snowmelt runoff in watersheds of Lake Tahoe, California, USA, using a network of nine nephelometric turbidometers. We estimate that montane badlands, comprising 1.2% of the Ward Creek watershed (25 km2), contributed 10–39% of snowmelt-derived suspended sediment load. The badlands are comprised of poorly-vegetated and deeply-incised gullies formed in parent material of Miocene volcanic mudflow breccia. The larger (29.5 km2) Blackwood Creek watershed also showed high relative erosion rates from volcanic terrain. Tributaries draining forested granitic and metasedimentary headwater regions had minimal sediment loads. Monitoring networks indicated that temporary main channel storage regulated release of fine sediment eroded from steep headwater slopes. This lag between erosion and delivery may lead to underestimation of gully erosion contribution to sediment budgets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The spatially-distributed OpenLISEM model was applied to a burnt catchment. • Remote sensing and topographic analysis were substitute for field-based estimates. • The model was automatically calibrated for individual storms. • The model was validated using the jack-knife cross-validation procedure. • The model also predicted the spatial patterns of soil erosion. Models are typically applied to estimate the potential adverse effects of fire on land degradation and water resources and the potential benefits of post-wildfire rehabilitation treatments. However, few modeling studies have been conducted for meso -scale catchments, and only a fraction of these studies include transport and deposition of eroded material within the catchment or represent spatial erosion patterns. This study presents an application and evaluation of the OpenLISEM physically-based and spatially-distributed hydrological and soil erosion model for a burned Mediterranean meso -scale catchment (18.5 km2) in a data-scarce environment, using a robust parameterization and calibration procedure: (1) integrating satellite imagery and the topographic wetness index to support model parameterization; (2) event-based automated calibration using the Model-Independent Parameter Estimation and Uncertainty Analysis and parameters ensemble for before and after the fire; (3) a jack-knife cross-validation for model evaluation. The study shows that this procedure used in OpenLISEM provides reasonable results for pre- and post-wildfire catchment discharge and sediment transport (r2 and NSE > 0.5; absolute PBIAS < 25% for discharge and 55% for sediment transport). This may serve the needs of model applications in data-scarce burned areas. The results also provide recommended model parameters for burned areas with high severity such as random roughness (rr) = 2.41 cm, and slope manning's n (n) = 0.038; or post-wildfire to pre-wildfire ratios of model parameters such as saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s) = 0.98×, channel manning's n (chn) = 0.44×, grain size (d50) = 0.61 ×. The simulation results indicate that wildfire did not lead to significantly enhanced hydrological responses and soil erosion at the catchment outlet, partly explained by the spatial patterns of soil erosion. For both pre- and post-wildfire conditions, higher soil erosion was simulated in areas located far from the catchment outlet. The wildfire led to enhanced hillslope erosion, mostly in the upper part of the catchment, providing ample opportunities for transported sediment to deposit before reaching the outlet. Abstract: Estimation of sediment load from Himalayan basins is of considerable importance for the planning, designing, installation and operation of hydro-power projects, including management of reservoirs. In the present study, an assessment of physical and chemical load, sediment yield and erosion rate has been undertaken at eight different locations in the Sainj and Tirthan watersheds. The analysis revealed that the maximum load was transferred during the monsoon season. Moreover, the estimated average chemical erosion rate of the Sainj (83 t km−2 yr−1) and Tirthan (80 t km−2 yr−1) watersheds were higher than that of the Indian average (69 t km−2 yr−1) representing all the rivers. Both watersheds were eroding physically and chemically at a faster rate than that of the world global average erosion rate (185 t km−2 yr−1). The flattish nature of the channels in some segments of these watersheds showed a lower transport of sediments, where as the constricted segments having steep bed slopes increased the velocity of flow and the sediment transport rate. These findings have important implications for water resource management in the context of sediments mobilization, erosion, channel management, ecological functions and operation of the hydro-power projects in the Lesser Himalayan region.
