Since the seminal study by Bagnold in 1954, which was inspired by sand movement in the desert and sediment transport in rivers, researchers have continued to investigate inertial and collisional effects in flows of non-Brownian suspensions. This paper overviews several post-Bagnold experimental studies on neutrally-buoyant suspensions that focused on measuring the suspension effective viscosity for conditions in which the particle Reynolds number was greater than 1, Re p > 1. Similar to what was found with Bagnold's experiments, secondary flows and end-wall vortices impact the rheological measurements especially as the rotational speed is increased. Recent experiments using a specialized rheometer that decreases the effect of end vortices demonstrate that the inertial contribution to the effective viscosity increases with a Reynolds number based linearly on particle diameter, Re d. The magnitude of the increase, however, is modest with a doubling in the inertial viscosity as Re d increases from 1 to 500. Larger contributions from inertial and collisional stresses are expected for the flows originally considered by Bagnold — inertial flows involving particles denser than the surrounding fluid. Understanding the relationship between sediment loading and its environmental implications in river systems is crucial for water resource management and environmental protection. This study explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of sediment loading and their environmental relationships in seven large rivers in China, aiming to quantify the contributions of various factors to changes in sediment transport. Monitoring data spanning twenty-one years (2002 to 2022) on sediments, hydrology, and the environment collected by sixty-five stations were analysed. The multivariate statistical techniques employed included Spearman's correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and multivariate regression modeling. The results show that sediment transport in various river systems exhibited spatial heterogeneity, the maximum annual average sediment loadings (1.59 × 108 t/yr) occur in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, the middle reaches have the highest sediment concentration (41.54 kg/m3), followed by the downstream of the Yellow River (5.85 kg/m3). Sediment loading and runoff changes in the basins did not adhere universally to synchronous patterns. Eleven of the thirteen basins of these river systems showed upward trends in annual runoff volume, whereas nine basins showed downward trends in annual sediment loading. Runoff volume accounted for over 30 % explanatory of sediment loading variations in all seven large river systems, with the Yangtze, Huaihe, Qiantang, and Songhua rivers surpassing 60 % of the explanatory power. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index of all watersheds showed an increasing trend, whereas the index of nine of the thirteen watersheds was correlated negatively with sediment transport. The influence of human activities on basin sediment transport was higher than that of natural resilience, whereas afforestation significantly reduced sediment in arid regions. This study provides insight into the temporal and spatial characteristics of sediment loadings and the driving effects of environmental factors, which has great significance for watershed environmental management. We employed idealized numerical experiments using Delft3D to investigate how the interactions of coalescing buoyant river plumes with mangrove vegetation affect sediment transport and deposition in the coastal zone. Our model system, based on the Firth of Thames in the North Island of New Zealand, is designed to represent two mangrove-lined rivers debouching into a coastal bay. Sediment transport patterns into the three adjacent mangrove forest regions (central, western, and eastern) were assessed by quantifying the sediment fluxes over a tidal cycle. The interactions between the buoyant river plumes resulted in a coalesced river plume that flowed along the central mangrove forest between the rivers. The dominant contributors to the total sediment transport into the mangrove forests varied with both the total and the relative flows through the two rivers. When both rivers were forced with their respective flows at the 50th percentile of observed flow, the analysis of sediment transport fluxes along the central forest revealed sediment deposition inside the mangrove forests lining the river mouth nearly four times greater than in the intermediate regions along the central forest; consistent with satellite imagery of the Firth of Thames. Winds of 5 m s−1 modify the overall sediment transport patterns by deflecting the river plume in the direction of the wind. The magnitude of sediment flux is the highest (nearly 80% compared to the no-wind scenario) in the case of an easterly wind scenario as the alongshore transport is enhanced by Coriolis deflection and wind direction aligned with the alongshore flows of the larger plume. • Plume-to-plume interactions result in a coalesced river plume. • Sediment plume bulge of one river inhibits along-shore sediment transport of the other. • The presence of winds altered sediment transport patterns. • A novel model integrating hillslope and in-stream sediment processes is developed. • We quantified the effects of soil-water conservation (SWC) on the Loess Plateau. • SWC contributes to 54.4% and 91.9% of the decline in discharge and sediment load. • Sediment reduction effect of hillslope SWC is more lasting compared to that of check dams. Soil erosion and sediment transport processes, which are intimately connected with hydrological processes, strongly affect land surface morphology and earth system dynamics. Over the past 60 years, intensive Soil-Water Conservation (SWC) measures implemented on the Loess Plateau have significantly reduced sediment load and concurrently exacerbated runoff declines, while the quantitative evaluation of the effects of SWC measures remains challenging. This study develops a sediment module which simulates the hillslope and in-stream sediment processes, and then incorporates the module into a Geomorphology-Based Ecohydrological Model (GBEHM). Besides, the model also couples with an explicit representation of different types of SWC measures, including both Hillslope SWC (HSWC) and River-network SWC (RSWC) measures. The newly developed hydro-sediment model is then applied to the Kuye River basin, a typical river basin on the Loess Plateau, and used for quantifying the effects of SWC measures on river discharge and sediment load during 1982–2019. Compared with Period 1 (1982–2000), the river discharge decreased by 48.7% in Period 2 (2001–2019), while the sediment load experienced a more substantial decrease of 95.3% between the two periods. Based on the numerical experiment results, HSWC and RSWC contributed to 25.4% (58 million m3/yr) and 28.9% (66 million m3/yr) of the annual runoff decline, as well as 58.1% (36 million t/yr) and 33.9% (21 million t/yr) of the annual sediment load reduction between the two periods, respectively. Besides, HSWC plays an increasingly important role in sediment reduction in recent years due to check dam silting. Deciphering sedimentary provenance in the Okinawa Trough (OT) is vital for understanding the dispersal system from source to sink and the paleoenvironmental evolution in the East China Sea (ECS). Sources include the Huanghe, Changjiang, and Taiwan rivers, as well as the ECS shelf; however, there is controversy over which source has dominated sediment supply since the last deglaciation, and how the tidal currents, shelf circulation, and Kuroshio Current (KC) has controlled the sediment transport. Here, we present a high-resolution record of grain size and clay minerals over the last 14.3 kyrs in an AMS 14C dated piston core from the middle OT. We use these data to reconstruct changes in the KC, identify the provenance of fine-grained sediment, and unravel the impact of paleoenvironmental factors on these provenance changes. A grain size component of 15.6–31.3 μm was extracted to reconstruct the KC changes. These data show that the KC strengthened sharply until 10.2 ka, then kept strong and stable during the Holocene. Clay mineral assemblages indicate that the sediment was mainly derived from the ECS shelf between 14.3 and 8.6 ka, then from the Taiwan rivers after 8.6 ka. The shelf sediment was eroded and transported by intense tidal currents. Taiwan river sediment became the dominant source due to the development of Taiwan Warm Current rather than the strengthening of KC. The ratio of smectite and kaolinite to illite and chlorite content indicates that the sediment contribution from the Huanghe (old Huanghe delta) and Changjiang rivers increased from 7.6 to 5.0 ka and from 3.2 ka to the present. The analysis of suspended sediment transport and of its variations over time is crucial for understanding environmental evolution and it is the key to future challenges caused by current global warming. The Mediterranean area is a hot spot for global changes, and the variation of precipitation amount and intensity will modify the environment of this region. In this work, we analyse the time series of suspended sediment transport of two rivers located in central Italy by using statistical and artificial intelligence techniques. Our study aims to re-analyze time series of suspended sediment transport, in order to demonstrate that climate change is responsible for the substantial decrease in the amount of sediment over the past century, in relation to the atmospheric teleconnections of the North Atlantic. Anthropic pressures like reforestation, land use change, and dam building have influenced the sediment transport capacity of rivers, causing a reduction of sediment concentration in water. These results are key factors to determine the future management of the Mediterranean areas, where the future scenarios predict a greater drop in yearly precipitation, and therefore a possible further decrease in the sediment transport capacity of the rivers, with major consequences for coastal and fluvial environments. Pearl River sediments have been reported to have changed greatly in composition due to the impact of human activities on erosion and landscapes in southern China since 2500 years BP. Here, sediments from four cores (PRD-1, PRD-3, PRD-6 and PRD-7) from the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were collected for high-density clay mineral analyses to determine the vertical variations in clay mineral compositions since the middle Holocene. The results showed that the clay mineral compositions of these four cores remained constant. In the PRD, the clay mineral assemblage dominantly consists of illite and kaolinite (averaging more than 85%), with smaller amounts of chlorite (averaging 10%) and scarce smectite (averaging 1%). The stable clay mineral assemblages in the PRD confirm that the clay mineral compositions of the sediments continuously supplied by the Pearl River have not changed. However, the smectite percentage in core PRD-7 increased by 7% downward from a depth of 12.4 m, which was correlated with the weathering of local volcanic materials and sediment transport in the east of the Pearl River under the influence of the Guangdong coastal current in winter. The stable clay mineral compositions in the core sediments indicate that the Pearl River sediments have accumulated naturally in the PRD instead of under the influence of human activities, which would have altered the compositions of the core sediments. • Provenance of organic carbon (OC) in ECS 14–0 ka determined from δ13C & Δ14C. • 14C ages of OC are older than co-deposited sediments by 1.9 to 5.5 kyr. • Old 14C OC ages due to pre-aged terrigenous OC & aging during sediment transport. More than 80% of marine organic carbon (OC) burial occurs in sediments of marginal seas. Sedimentary OC 14C ages up to several millennia older than co-deposited coastal and pelagic sediments have been well documented but the cause of this phenomenon remains uncertain. We measured 14C and 13C contents of OC, along with the sedimentary content of terrestrial and marine lipid biomarkers, in sediment cores from the East China Sea to evaluate and quantify processes controlling OC ages over the last 14.3 kyr. We find that 14C ages of OC were persistently older than co-deposited sediments by 1930–5530 yr. Temporal variations of the calculated apparent initial radiocarbon ages of total OC (TOC-AIR) mirrored sea level changes, with higher values (4570 ± 1250 yr) during the transgression (14.1–7.8 kyr BP) and lower values (3170 ± 670 yr) during the mid-late Holocene (7.8–0 kyr BP), suggesting that transgression-induced coastline retreat reduced the transport of pre-aged terrestrial OC to the marginal sea. However, bulk OC 14C ages were consistently older than those expected from ternary mixing of Changjiang (Yangtze River), Huanghe (Yellow River) and marine sources based on δ13C and Δ14C end-members. We therefore propose that hydrodynamic processes during sediment transport and the addition of pre-aged OC from land and submerged coast were the main factors contributing to these old 14C ages of OC and their temporal variations. During the transgression, higher TOC-AIR values were observed during times of lower sea-level, which suggests that erosion of coastal deposits during transgression might have contributed old OC. Since sea level stabilized 7.8 kyr BP hydrodynamic processes were the primary cause of high 14C ages of OC. The significant role for hydrodynamic aging processes during the mid-late Holocene is hypothesized to result from longer transport distances between river mouths and sediment depocenters which can accommodate additional deposition-resuspension loops. Identifying the sources and weathering degree of sediments in the northern deserts of China is crucial to understand the evolution of the Asian monsoon system and corresponding induced changes in surface processes. Great progress has been made in the reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment from the Early Holocene onwards based on chronostratigraphy and proxies of aeolian sedimentary sequences in the Mu Us Desert (MUD). However, previous studies have given rise to some controversial over the timing of the Holocene optimum period, and there is a scarcity of studies on the sediment provenance evolution of the desert during the Holocene and its internal relationship with the East Asian summer (EASM) and winter (EAWM) monsoons. Here, we provide new elemental geochemical data from a fluvial–aeolian sedimentary sequence in the southern MUD; we then combine these data with other available elemental data and hydroclimatology information to investigate the characteristics of sediment source evolution and their possible connection with the EASM and EAWM on the southern margin of the MUD-desert/loess transition zone since the latter part of the Early-Holocene. The elemental composition and geochemical characteristics of the studied sedimentary sequence differed markedly in the periods before and after 6.4 ka BP, suggesting a change in the source of the sediments across this boundary. From the late Early-Holocene (10.6 cal. ka BP), sediments were dominated by the chemical weathering products of local source material, with a gradual increase in chemical weathering over time, indicating a gradual strengthening of the EASM; the EASM reached its peak Holocene strength at 8.4–6.4 ka BP, accompanied by a moderate level of chemical weathering. After 6.4 ka BP, with the weakening of monsoon precipitation, the EAWM began to strengthen, and long-distance transport of source material from the west and northwest increased; however, chemical weathering of local source material driven by the EASM remained dominant until 4.0 ka BP. After 4.0 ka BP, the EAWM became dominant, and sediments showed strong sedimentary cycles, mainly transported from long-distance sources by aeolian activity, and the MUD became an important sedimentary sink for the northern-central deserts. After 0.7 ka BP, the sediments in the MUD became a mixture of different-age sediments due to river scouring and the transport of pre-existing sediments along the shoreline. Collectively, the elemental geochemical and other proxy data from Holocene sediments on the southern margin of the MUD record an inverse relationship between the EASM and EAWM; these two monsoonal circulations have alternated in their control of the sedimentary source characteristics and geomorphological environmental evolution processes across the southern margin of the MUD during the Holocene. A tidal shear front (TSF) can be defined as an obvious horizontal gradient of flow velocity formed by opposing tidal currents (reversed TSF) or same-direction tidal currents (homogenous TSF) on both sides of the front with limited impact by river runoff. Observational and modeling studies have been conducted to investigate the impact of a reversed TSF on the transport of freshwater and sediment in the Yellow River Mouth (YRM). The reversed TSF existence period is only about 40% of a tidal cycle (around slack of flood and ebb); however, when this front disappears (around maximum flood and ebb), sediment transport across the frontal zone is still rare. This suggests that the dynamic mechanism of cross-frontal sediment transport in a tidal cycle remains unclear. In this study, synchronous observations of sea current and suspended sediment concentrations along the river mouth profiles at the YRM in 1995, 2003, and 2019 were used to investigate the long-term variation characteristics, mechanisms, and impacts of the TSF on cross-frontal sediment transport. The results indicate that in addition to the reversed TSF, there are also homogenous TSF during flood and ebb tides, with the ebb homogenous TSF being more significant due to tidal asymmetry in the YRM. The ebb homogenous TSF is located between shallow shoals and the slopes of the subaqueous delta front and lasts for about 3 h around the maximum ebb. Its maximum shear strength is similar to that of the reversed TSF, and the formation mechanism is also similar. The presence of the ebb homogenous TSF reduces the efficiency of cross-frontal sediment transport during the ebb. The reversed and homogenous TSFs alternately block sediment moving towards the sea. Thus, terrigenous sediment is difficult to cross the frontal zone to the central Bohai Sea by tidal currents solely. Over the past two decades of low discharge, with the Yellow River implementing artificial water and sediment regulation, the homogenous TSF during the ebb tide has become more and more important and cannot be neglected for cross-frontal sediment transport under normal conditions. Furthermore, from a long-term perspective, the shear strength of the TSF is positively correlated with the distance of river mouth siltation into the sea. Additionally, salinity and turbidity gradients are also positively correlated with the shear strength in the estuary. The structural controls of sediment connectivity are poorly understood in low-gradient watersheds and stream networks. We developed a field- and modeling-based framework to understand the timescales and thresholds associated with the structural controls of sediment connectivity and continuity in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky, USA. Field reconnaissance was carried out to assess stream morphology and sediment connectivity, which was leveraged to derive instream sediment connectivity indices for 181 pool-riffle sequences in the low-gradient bedrock stream network. Our model framework coupled a probability-based connectivity formulation with the sediment continuity formula to assess sediment transport and connectivity in the stream network. Results indicated that the bedrock system reflects an end-member in which lithology controls longitudinal stream morphology. Specifically, we found that regional morphology controls pool-riffle length scales via bedrock outcrops, which therein controls the timescales of sediment connectivity over multiple hydrologic regimes. The pool to riffle length ratio was found to be 4.6, an order of magnitude greater than the ratio for alluvial systems. The new formulation of the sediment continuity formula coupled with the probability of connectivity framework adequately captured both short-term and long-term continuous dynamics of sediment transport, as indicated by evaluation metrics with measured sediment flux and field reconnaissance. Based on the analysis of 362 riffles and pools, we found that sediment in pools upstream of bedrock outcrop barriers are disconnected 93 % of the time whereas riffles are connected and allow full continuity 99 % of the time. Intensive plantation management can affect catchment conditions, especially in large clear-cut areas that expose soil thereby encouraging sediment transport to streams. Harvesting strategies are needed to reduce these effects while enabling commercial logging. In this study, we examined the effects of harvested areas in suspended sediment production by selecting three catchments covered by Eucalyptus spp. forests with 15%, 60% and 88% harvested areas (hereafter H 15 , H 60 and H 88 , respectively) and monitoring suspended sediment during two years. We compared two approaches of estimating annual suspended sediment: weekly grab samples vs. weekly grab samples + bottle traps. Proportion harvest and suspended sediment yields were directly related on an annual basis. Such differences were more notable for H 15 and H 88 ; H 60 had intermediate values. Annual suspended sediment yields ranged from 3.0 to 208.2 kg ha−1 year−1, and in addition to harvest proportion, presence of buffer riparian forest possibly reduced concentrations of suspended sediments in streams. Uranium (U) isotopes can be used to estimate the comminution age of sediments , i.e. the time elapsed from sediment production on continents, via weathering and physical erosion, to deposition in the sedimentary record. The calculation of this comminution age is based on measured (234U/238U) activity ratios in river sediments, and inferred time-dependent recoil effect, which leads to the preferential release of 234U from mineral lattices during erosion processes. In this study, we report on a large-scale (234U/238U) investigation of modern river sediments worldwide, with the aim to determine the extent to which parameters such as grain size, lithology, weathering, climate and geomorphology may influence the distribution of U isotopes in fine-grained sediments. Our extensive dataset (N = 64) includes U isotopic measurements for many of the world's largest rivers, but also rivers draining particular climatic and geological settings. Our results indicate that sediments collected from river basins draining mostly igneous, metamorphic or volcanic rocks often display (234U/238U) ratios > 1, with clay-size fractions (<4 µm) being less depleted in 234U (higher 234U/238U) than corresponding silt-size fractions (4–63 µm). In contrast, sediments derived from multi-lithological basins or draining sedimentary rocks are typically characterized by (234U/238U) ratios <1, with clays generally exhibiting more depleted 234U signatures than silts. Taken together, these observations suggest that the formation of secondary clay minerals in soils from basins draining mostly igneous, metamorphic is accompanied by partial incorporation by recoil injection of 234U initially released during weathering processes, possibly from U-rich minerals, such as sphene or apatite. Instead, in multi-lithological catchments draining sedimentary rocks, we propose that the erosion of recycled sediments having experienced several cycles of weathering, possibly over glacial-interglacial timescales, could explain the much lower (234U/238U) ratios observed in clay-size fractions. While no direct relationships can be identified between sediment (234U/238U) ratios and lithology, weathering intensity, climatic or geomorphic parameters in corresponding river basins, we show that the catchment size probably plays an important role in controlling the distribution of (234U/238U) in river sediments, through its direct influence on the sediment residence time. Finally, a multiple regression analysis of our data, combining various environmental parameters for the lithology, climate and geomorphology of studied river basins, indicates predicted (234U/238U) values that are very similar to measured values (with R2 ∼ 0.8). This finding provides further support for the usefulness of (234U/238U) ratios in the sedimentary record for reconstructing past landscape changes and their effect on sediment transport and residence time in river basins. A riparian vegetation dynamics model was proposed to consider the mutual influence of hydro-morphology and vegetation dynamics in a sand-bed river. The simulation model consists of four sub-models: river flow and sediment transport, recruitment, growth and expansion, and destruction of vegetation. The numerical simulation was applied to the downstream part of a sand-bed river for predicting the vegetation dynamics over a long period. The model performance is validated by comparison with the field investigation results obtained from analysis of aerial photographs. The simulation results showed that the growth of vegetation starts from the shoreline and the downstream part of sandbars, and the riparian vegetation increases the stability and the relative elevation of the bars. From the good agreements of the temporal tendencies of vegetation recruitment, expansion, and destruction with those obtained from the aerial photographs analysis, the vegetation dynamics model proposed in this study was verified to reproduce the long-term trend of riparian vegetation dynamics fairly well. Finally, the model was applied to different sandbar modes, i.e., alternating bars and multiple bars. The simulation results indicated that the expansion and destruction rates of vegetation show similar tendencies for both bar mode cases, and they were mainly determined by the magnitude of the annual maximum flood. Previous studies have examined the effects of fluctuating flow and water temperature on spawning; however, insufficient attention has been paid to their effects on sediment transport. This study analysed changes in runoff and sediment load (SL) at the Xiangjiaba hydrologic station (XJB) and Zhutuo hydrologic station (ZT) in the upper reaches of the YR over the past 60 years. Based on the indicators of hydrological regimes and sediment transport, we used the generalized additive models (GAM) to investigate the effects of cascade hydropower operations from 2009 to 2018 on the spawning abundance of Coreius heterodon (C. H) in the upper YR Fish Reserve. Following the operation of cascade hydropower, the SL and sediment concentration decreased by 56.8% and 56.6%, respectively, while the median size of the bed-material load demonstrated an initial thinning trend followed by subsequent coarsening. In addition, the frequency of the high-flow pulse increased by 32.1%, whereas the peak flow and duration of the high-flow pulse decreased by 41.2% and 62.6%, respectively. However, no significant changes were noted in the indicators of the flooding process. The decrease in sediment transport and changes in the flow regime led to a reduction in the spawning abundance of C. H. Reductions in sediment transport and changes in high-flow pulses caused by cascade hydropower can negatively affect C. H spawning, and SL is the most important indicator of impacts on spawning abundance (contribution of 77.7%). Estuarine deltas play a critical role in the interaction between the ocean and land and serve as the primary location for the deposition of terrestrial organic carbon and pollutants. However, many deltas are increasingly at risk of erosion due to natural processes and human activities. In particular, abandoned estuarine deltas are extremely prone to erosion in the absence of sediment replenishment. The erosion of sediment in these deltas is crucial in comprehending the evolution of delta erosion as it directly impacts coastal geomorphology, ecological environments, geochemical cycling, and carbon sequestration dynamics. Therefore, determining accurately the erosion characteristics of estuarine deltaic sediments is essential for assessing and managing these evolving coastal systems. Therefore, this study conducted erosion experiments on undisturbed sediment samples collected from the subaqueous delta of the abandoned Yellow River Estuary (Old Qingshuigou Estuary) utilizing the UMCES-Gust Erosion Microcosm System. The aim was to reveal the spatial distribution characteristics of sediment erodibility and explore the erosion process, characteristics, and influencing factors of the surface sediments in the area. Erosion characteristics exhibited a spatial distribution pattern of increased erodibility in nearshore sediment and reduced erodibility in offshore sediments. The critical erosion shear stress of surface sediments ranged from 0.2 to 0.68 N/m2, while the erosion rate increased linearly with an increase in erosion shear stress and reached a maximum value of 2.119 g/m2 s, suggesting that nearshore sediments exhibited strong erodibility. Furthermore, the erosion characteristics exhibited a strong correlation with the type of sediment. Silt exhibited surface erosion and Type I erosion (depth-limited erosion), whereas silty sand primarily underwent volume erosion and Type II erosion (steady-state erosion). Particle size characteristics played a crucial role in influencing erosion. Additionally, our results revealed that the effective particle size of sediment aggregates and the scale effect of turbulence were also important factors that affected sediment erosion characteristics. Net primary productivity (NPP) has been the subject of numerous studies, but the qualitative and comparative study on NPP that considers human activities, climate change, and their interactions is still insufficient. The Grain for Green Program (GTGP) was established in the Loess Plateau since 1999, could be used as a reference study. The temporal and spatial patterns, change trend, and driving factors of vegetation NPP were analysed in Loess Plateau using data derived from GLASS NPP (the Global Land Surface Satellite Product), meteorology, atmospheric quality, hydrology and land use by correlation and improved residual trend analysis from 2000 to 2020. After GTGP implementation, the climate and human contributions to vegetation NPP were 62 % and 38 %. NPP increased at a rate of 6.3 g C m−2 a−1 from 2000 to 2020, which was higher in 2010–2020 (6.9 g C m−2 a−1) than it was in 2000–2010 (5.7 g C m−2 a−1). The same trend was followed by the contribution of climate change to NPP between 2010 and 2020 (70.6 %) and 2000–2010 (65 %). The GTGP core area was mostly where the vegetation NPP rising zone was located. From the original bare land in the desert area, 4442 km2 of vegetation grew and increased the NPP (68.7 g C m−2). Under the warm–humid climatic trend, the climate factors contributed to NPP more in grasslands (40 %) compared to woodlands (29 %) and precipitation (33 %) was more sensitive than temperature (12.7 %). Consequently, sediment transport, PM 2.5 and dusty weather decreased significantly. In conclusion, although climate change has a greater impact on vegetation, human activities have enhanced the impact faster in the first decade, which benefit and profit from the environment finally. To mitigate land losses in the Mississippi River Delta, sediment diversions are being employed to enable the flow of river water and sediments into wetlands experiencing degradation. A two-dimensional coupled flow-wave Delft3D model was used in this study to explore the hydrodynamics and sediment transport in Fourleague Bay (FLB), Louisiana, USA, which has been considered an analog site for studying the efficiency of sediment diversion projects. In-situ measurements of sediment accretion and hydrodynamic characteristics from 2015 to 2016 were utilized to calibrate and validate the morphodynamic model. The validated model was then applied to quantify sediment transport in FLB and surrounding marshes between May 2015 and May 2016. The results show that more sediment could be deposited to the surrounding marshes with high river discharges and strong winds. Thus, by strategically aligning the timing of pulses of river water from the diversion with the seasonal intensification of atmospheric forcing, it is possible to sustain and promote the growth of the surrounding wetlands. Moreover, we found that multiple sediment transport processes occurred during the entire study period, including the deposition of riverine sediment into the bay floor, direct deposition of riverine sediment in the surrounding marshes, resuspension of bay floor sediment, and redistribution of resuspended sediment to adjacent marshes and the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The results indicate that the riverine sediment tended to be directly deposited in the marshes when the river discharge was high. During calm weather conditions and normal river discharge, FLB acted as a reservoir, storing sediment from the upper river, and later acted as a sediment source to the nearby wetlands and the GoM during energetic atmospheric conditions. This suggests that using the bay floor as a reservoir can extend the distance over which wetlands can benefit from the sediment diversions, as the supply of sediment to the wetlands becomes a multi-step process. China's Loess Plateau remains one of the most serious water erosion areas on Earth, while runoff and sediments of the Yellow River continue to decrease due to soil and water conservation (SWC) measures. A total of 197 rainfall-runoff events from 1965 to 2020 in the Huangfuchuan catchment, which were divided into 3 sub-periods (P0: 1965 – 1982 limited measures; P1: 1983–1998 only dams and P2: 1999–2020 dams and revegetation), were selected to reveal the differences and mechanisms of runoff generation and sediment dynamics. The results show that: 1) anthropogenic activities played a leading role in water and sediment reduction; 2) infiltration-excess overland flow during the first two periods was dominant mechanism, but the results imply a potential shift towards saturation-excess overland flow occurring more often during P2; 3) the studied system, in a highly erodible region, is transport-limited; 4) sediment connectivity is reduced noticeably at the catchment scale, in which the decrease in index of connectivity (IC) values mainly resulted from the increase in proportion of the most disconnected areas of the catchment, especially in P2. These findings can help towards a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the changes in sediment dynamics, which can be applied to develop and implement sustainable water and soil conservation planning in the local or other similar areas. Chemical weathering contributes to the regulation of the global carbon cycle and biogeochemical cycles. Accordingly, the identification of the parameters that control weathering reactions and transport of weathering signals at the catchment scale is essential. The use of boron (B) isotopes have been shown to be a useful proxy in tracing weathering reactions due to large isotope fractionation during weathering processes. However, our knowledge of how boron isotopes record the weathering regime at the catchment scale and how that weathering signal is transported from source areas to the depositional environment remains limited. Here we characterize B isotope and major element behavior during chemical weathering and transport by analyzing the B isotopic (δ11B) and element compositions of riverine material (riverbank sands (<63 µm), clay fractions (<2 µm) extracted from sands, and dissolved load) along the course of the Murrumbidgee River (NSW, Australia), its upstream tributaries, and monolithologic subcatchments. In the Murrumbidgee, two distinct weathering regimes are present, one where mineral dissolution is associated with minimal neoformation at higher elevations and another where mineral neoformation dominates at lower elevations and in granitic lithologies. Significant B isotope difference between the clay fraction and the bedrock (Δ11B clay-bedrock) is observed in most monolithological catchments at high mean elevation (excluding granites), which correlates with a large B depletion. Smaller isotope difference between the clay fraction and bedrock is observed in monolithological catchments at lower elevations as well as in granitic catchments at all elevations and is associated with limited B removal. These results suggest that lithology and catchment topography influence B mobility during weathering and the isotopic composition of weathering products. By mass balance calculation, the B isotope and chemical composition of the clay and sand fractions in the Murrumbidgee River can be explained as a mixture of the clays and sands produced throughout the catchment delivered to the main channel by the tributaries. These results indicate that there is little or no chemical and isotopic modification of the river sediment during fluvial transport and that weathering signal produced in the sediment source areas is transferred to the depositional environment without significant modification. The boron content of the clay-sized fraction (∼40 ppm) is several orders of magnitude greater than that of the dissolved load while B isotope compositions of the clay-sized fraction are isotopically much lighter (up to 40‰). Because a maximum isotopic difference of 30‰ between the dissolved and solid phases is expected during adsorption processes, the observed isotope compositions in the dissolved load and the sediment clay fraction cannot be explained by pH-driven B partitioning. These observations suggest that clays are not directly precipitating from solutions compositionally similar to surface waters; deeper soil solutions are expected to play a significant role in clay formation. This research highlights the potential of B isotopes in river sediments to describe the present and past weathering regimes at the catchment scale, including possible paleoenvironment reconstruction as the B isotope signature of riverine material records the conditions of its formation. There are large differences in the grain sizes of incoming sediments in different source areas of aggrading rivers in desert areas. The scour-deposition characteristics of sediment fractions affect river governance decision-making. Based on a large number of prototype observation datasets, this study has systematically sorted and analysed the data of water and sediment (particularly, the sediment fractions) in the Ningxia-Inner Mongolia Reach (Ning-Meng Reach) of the Yellow River since the 1960s, specifically to determine the sources of coarse sediment. It has been clarified that the channel sediments are mainly composed of incoming sediments from the main stream and tributaries and that the corresponding coarse sediments mainly come from seasonal tributaries and aeolian sand that is transported into the Yellow River in the reach. It has been considered that the sediment in the reach has a low incipient velocity—when the discharge exceeds 1500 m³/s, the sediment in the riverbed generally meets the incipient velocity and transportation conditions. Meanwhile, the study has revealed the characteristics of sediment scour deposition during different floods in the Ning-Meng Reach. The results have shown that the sediments of aggrading rivers in desert areas come from the main stream and seasonal tributaries, along with aeolian sand that is transported into the Yellow River. The grain sizes of the majority of the sediments are smaller than 0.05 mm, but there is still a certain proportion of coarse sediment with grain sizes larger than 0.05 mm. Both the median and mean grain sizes of the riverbed sediment vary between approximately 0.12 and 0.22 mm, and almost all of the sediment grains have low incipient velocities. Furthermore, the scour deposition process of the channel mainly depends on the river sediment transportation capacity. The entire reach can evolve into scour deposition, or the deposition efficiency can decrease due to the increasing discharge during non-floodplain floods, while the conducive discharges are 2500–3000 m³/s for the transportation of each sediment fraction. Sediment transport over Sandy Point dredge pit in the northern Gulf of Mexico during a cold front event in November 2014 was examined using a finely resolved numerical model. The Delft3D model was used to perform numerical experiments that simulate the effect of wind-generated waves, wind-driven currents, river discharge, and tides on sediment dynamics in Sandy Point dredge pit. The hydrodynamics and sediment models were validated and calibrated using field data of current, wave, water level, and suspended sediment concentration. Two potential sources of sediment were examined: fluvial sediment from the Mississippi River and resuspended sediments from the seabed. Results showed that during a cold front, shear stress from wave motions played a significant role in the resuspension of sediments in Sandy Point dredge pit. The maximum cold front-related wave impact on sediment resuspension could increase near-bed sediment concentration in Sandy Point dredge pit by 20–50 times. In addition, the results suggest that the primary source of sediment for Sandy Point dredge pit during a cold front was resuspension from the ambient seabed due to increased bottom shear stress by wind-induced waves and strong southward wind-driven currents. Currents dispersed sediments from the Mississippi River passes and inhibited riverine sediment supply from Sandy Point dredge pit. The Lower Mekong Delta Coastal Zone (LMDCZ) is emblematic of the coastal erosion problem facing many tropical deltas. Over the last 3500 years, large river sediment fluxes expanded the delta seaward, and waves and currents formed the Ca Mau Peninsula to the southwest. Since the middle of the 20th century, the LMDCZ is affected by various human activities that include reduction of river fluxes due to damming and sand mining, land subsidence due to groundwater extraction, and reduction of protective coastal mangroves in favor of agriculture and aquaculture. Coastal erosion is observed along many sections of the delta, with a rate of up to 50 m per year in some areas. However, the role of human activities remains difficult to assess because of its complexity. The present modeling study is designed to sort out the contribution of natural hydrodynamic redistribution of sediments from man-induced erosion. The modeling system used is based on CROCO, forced by global reanalyses at the boundaries and at the surface, including wave statistics (required by the sediment transport model). Tides and realistic river forcing are also included. Calibration and validation relies on a combination of in situ and remotely-sensed observations, and laboratory experiments. Once validated, coastal dynamics are investigated by performing sensitivity experiments for both the hydro- and sediment dynamics. The results suggest that while wind is the main factor driving the coastal currents, the sediment dynamics is essentially the result of re-suspension due to wave-induced bed shear stress. The suspended sediments are then redistributed by coastal currents that are not limited to the nearshore zone. Strong seasonality of the process is observed with the northeast winter monsoon being the season of strongest re-suspension and sediment redistribution. The annual sediment budget is characterized by important local disequilibrium, with alongshore patterns that are in agreement with the observed shoreline evolution. The effect of a decrease in river sediment supply is difficult to evaluate because the estuarine zone is still in accretion, apart from the particular case of Go Cong shores. Far from the estuarine zone, subsidence is an additional strong candidate to explain erosion in areas that should naturally be accreting. Synthesizing these results, the study proposes a first attempt at a "taxonomy and geography" of processes along the coastal Mekong delta that can explain the recent observations of shoreline changes and help design protection measures. The southwestern South Yellow Sea (SYS) is influenced by tremendous sediment loads derived from the Yellow River (Huanghe) and the Yangtze River (Changjiang). However, the influence of Yangtze River sediments and their transport mechanism in this area remain unresolved. In this study, we present the grain size, clay minerals, and elemental compositions of surface sediments from the southwestern SYS, together with an analysis of field observation seawater salinity and suspended sediment data, to investigate the provenance and transport mechanism of the sediments. Discrimination diagrams of clay minerals, Cr/Th vs. Sc/Al, and rare earth elements (REEs) indicate that the southwestern SYS sediments are mainly derived from the old Yellow River subaqueous delta and the Yangtze River. Interestingly, Yangtze sediments enter the SYS in ways that differ seasonally. In summer, Yangtze sediments may be transported into the central SYS by the dispersion of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and may also be transported northwestward by the Subei Coastal Current (SCC) to the area off the Jiangsu coast. In winter, the Yangtze-derived sediments deposited off the Jiangsu coast in summer are transported into the central and/or even north SYS under the combined effects of the SCC, Yellow Sea Coastal Current (YSCC), and Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC). Throughout the transport processes, there is an alternation between a source and sink of Yangtze sediments off the Jiangsu coast; the coast serves as a sink of Yangtze sediments in summer but as a source of SYS sedimentation in winter. River confluences are key features of a river network, and their effects on contaminant transport and transformation need to be understood to control the contamination of a river network. This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of phosphorus (P) contamination on the surface sediment at a river confluence of the Huai River, China, where water and sediment contamination is severe. The results highlight that P contamination of the surface sediment at a river confluence is more severe than that of the main stream of the river network to which the river confluence belongs. Floods have critical impact on the transport of sediment and its surface texture. In the annual water cycle the initial small flood can convey much more contaminated sediment and pollute the downstream river, whereas the subsequent large flood leads to the coarsening of the surface sediment and decrease of the total P (TP) content on the surface sediment (TPS). Water temperature is one of the most important factors affecting the temporal variability of the TPS at the river confluence. Higher P amounts are adsorbed on the surface sediment during lower water temperatures in winter and spring. Calcium bound P (Ca-P) is a relatively stable fraction of the sedimentary P during the dynamic processes of contamination of the surface sediment, and the nonapatite P gets released from the surface sediment during the summer. Effects of P concentration of the surface water and that of pH on TPS variability are not discernable in the current study. • Ecosystem characterization of canyon system in the Ligurian basin is proposed. • New sedimentological, biogeochemical and meiofaunal data are provided. • The foraminiferal assemblages are more linked to water depth than to the location in open slope or canyon. • The first finding ever of a warm tropical species (Amphistegina lessonii) in the Ligurian Sea sediments. Living (Rose-Bengal stained) benthic foraminifera were investigated in eleven stations sampled along transects following a depth gradient from Polcevera and Bisagno canyons and the adjacent open slope (Ligurian Sea), in a depth interval ranging from 200 to 2000 m. In order to understand which environmental factors influence the abundance and taxonomical composition of the foraminiferal assemblages in these two domains (canyon and open slope), qualitative and quantitative foraminiferal data were correlated to the sediment biochemical composition (in terms of phytopigments, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and biopolymeric carbon), grain size and the main hydrological characteristics (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen). The Cluster Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis allowed us to detect two sectors (coastal and offshore) characterized by contrasting trophic conditions. The coastal sector reflects spread meso-eutrophic conditions in both physiographic domains being possibly more impacted by the river inputs and sediment transport processes from land. In fact, the narrow continental shelf of the Ligurian Sea favors the deposition of sediment transported by riverine processes on the immediately adjacent coastal areas. As a result homogenization of sea-bottom conditions occurs, leading to an unclear differentiation between open slope and canyon foraminiferal assemblages. Conversely, the offshore sector is less affected by physical disturbance due to the sedimentary flows decreasing in relation to the larger distance from the coastline. Consequently, the lower organic matter content and lower food quality (expressed in terms of contribution of the primary material to the biopolymeric carbon pool) lead to a more oligotrophic condition, which favors the development of peculiar assemblages dominated by Glomospira charoides , Ammolagena clavata and epifaunal taxa. The first finding ever of a warm tropical species (Amphistegina lessonii) in the Ligurian Sea sediments at 500-m depth can be considered the first evidence of upward expansion of tropical species to the Northern portion of the Mediterranean Sea, which is experiencing an evident water warming linked to the ongoing global climate change. Abstract Operations of amount of large and medium reservoirs have remarkably changed runoff and sediment loads, and consequently affected the fluvial processes intensively on the upper Yellow River. In this study, time series of runoff and sediment transport rates of four major hydrological stations on the upper Yellow River were used to analyze temporal and spatial variations of runoff and sediment loads. Mann-Kendall test and wavelet analysis were applied to analyze the datasets. Temporal variations in runoff and sediment loads were discerned in terms of changing trend, abrupt change year, and multi-periods from the time series. Additionally, a time series of runoffs was reconstructed based on a modeling scenario removing impact of reservoir impoundment and water diversion to indicate the status without human disturbances. Comparison of the measured and reconstructed datasets was conducted to evaluate the impact of reservoir impoundment and water diversion on hydrological variations. The measured runoff and sediment loads showed obvious decreasing trends due to impoundment and water diversion. However, the reconstructed runoffs regarded as only affected by climate change showed no significant changing trend at a 95% confidence level, confirming that, instead of climate change, human activities played the most important roles in variations. The measured datasets indicated that the reservoir construction and operation caused an abrupt change in runoff in 1986, while the reconstructed datasets indicated another abrupt change in 1995. Wavelet transform analysis distinguished the multi-periodical features of the time series. The first, second, and third dominant periodicities of the measured runoffs were 25–27, 16, and 8 years, respectively, whereas the first three dominant periodicities of the reconstructed runoffs were 26–31, 12, and 7 years, respectively. It was indicated that the high-frequency periodicities of runoffs decreased while the low-frequency periodicities increased, owing to reservoir impoundment and water diversion. Abstract The physical sustainability of deltaic environments is very much dependent on the volume of water and sediment coming from upstream and the way these fluxes recirculate within the delta system. Based on several past studies, the combined mean annual sediment load of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) systems has previously been estimated to vary from 1.0 to 2.4 BT/year which can be separated into components flowing from the Ganges (260 to 680 MT/year) and Brahmaputra (390 to 1160 MT/year). Due to very limited data and small contribution of the Meghna system (6–12 MT/year) to the total sediment flux of the GBM system, the data of the Meghna is not considered in the analysis assuming the sediment flux from GB system as the sediment flux of GBM. However, in this paper our analysis of sediment concentration data (1960–2008) collected by Bangladesh Water Development Board shows that the sediment flux is much lower: 150 to 590 MT/year for the Ganges versus 135 to 615 MT/year for the Brahmaputra, with an average total flux around 500 MT/year. Moreover, the new analysis provides a clear indication that the combined sediment flux delivered through these two major river systems is following a declining trend. In most of the planning documents in Bangladesh, the total sediment flux is assumed as a constant value of around 1 billion tons, while the present study indicates that the true value may be around 50% lower than this (with an average decreasing trend of around 10 MT/year). Samples (n = 107) collected from sedimentary sequences in the source area, upper, middle, and lower reaches were analyzed for grain size and major element contents. The results showed that sediments in the source area of the Yellow River mainly originated from the Tibetan Plateau, whereas the input of materials from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) gradually increased from the upper to lower reaches. The sediment transport was jointly controlled by simultaneous or alternating aeolian and fluvial processes. Asynchronism in aeolian activity and rainfall and the non-uniformity of runoff and sediment sources resulted in a concentration of aeolian-fluvial interactions in the river reaches traversing through the deserts and CLP. Fluvial sediments in the upper reaches consisted of wash loads deposited in slow-moving water, whereas rapid replenishment of sediment from the CLP in the middle reaches increased sediment transport capacity, thereby enhancing the uniformity of sedimentary characteristics from the upper to lower reaches. Moreover, numerous gullies in the CLP resulted in increased intensities of aeolian-fluvial interactions, thereby accelerating severe sedimentation in the lower reaches. Vegetation changes have a significant impact on the runoff and sediment process of rivers in arid areas. Since 2000, the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin have experienced rapid vegetation restoration, and the sediment transport in this area has also shown a significant decreasing trend. In this paper, we selected 10 rivers from north to south located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River as the research area, and analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of vegetation restoration and changes in runoff and sediment, as well as the effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment process. The results show that sediment transport modulus in the middle reaches of the Yellow River are very significantly decreasing (p < 0.001), and the rate of change of the northern rivers is higher than that of the southern rivers. During the periods of 1956–1979 and 1980–1999, the sediment transport modulus showed a very significant decreasing trend from north to south (p < 0.001), but the trend of significantly decreasing the sediment transport modulus from north to south from 2000 to 2020 no longer existed (p = 0.761), after 2000, the middle reaches of the Yellow River underwent a rapid process of vegetation restoration, vegetation restoration significantly reduced the spatial heterogeneity of river sediment transport. Partial correlation analysis and sensitivity analysis show that, there was no significant correlation between vegetation restoration and runoff reduction (R2 = 0.03, p = 0.63), but there was a significant correlation between vegetation restoration and reduced sediment transport modulus (R2 = 0.49, p < 0.05), and a significant correlation between vegetation restoration and decreased sediment concentration (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.01). During the periods of 1981–1999 and 2000 - 2020, the relationship between precipitation and sediment transport modulus was positively correlated. In the 1981–1999 period, NDVI showed a weak negative correlation with sediment transport modulus but in the 2000 - 2020 period, NDVI and sediment transport modulus showed a significant negative correlation. This study provides valuable insights into the natural response of river sediment transport to vegetation restoration, and the findings are critical for soil and water conservation planning in arid area. Abstract Heavy rainfall becomes more variable and erratic in the subtropical areas, increasing unpredictable risks of soil erosion and nutrient losses on the sloping farmland. Soil management practice also plays an important role in soil erosion. However, the effects of management practices on soil erosion and nutrient losses in response to heavy rainfall remain uncertain. A field study was carried out under natural rainfalls, including five treatments: bare land as control (CK), downslope tillage (DT), hedgerows with downslope tillage (DT + HG), contour ridge tillage (CT) and straw mulch (SM). The effects of management measures on runoff depth, sediment yield and nutrient losses were evaluated during peanut growth. The results indicated that heavy rainfalls caused severer soil erosion and nutrient losses. Significantly reduced runoff and sediment loss were found in all the conservation measures (p < 0.05). Compared with CK, the runoff depths under DT, DT + HG, CT and SM were reduced by 10%, 37%, 49% and 81% respectively under heavy rainfalls. In addition, sediment loss under DT, DT+HG, CT and SM were 30.81, 7.42, 1.83 and 1.34 Mg ha−1, respectively. These values were 42%, 86%, 97% and 97% lower than that for CK, respectively. TN and TP losses were mainly controlled by sediment yield. The majority of nutrient losses occurred in the particulate fraction (93% of TN and 99% of TP). Generally, much of the TN and TP were transported by the particles <0.05 mm. Over 51% of TN was transported by fractions of <0.05 mm in CK and DT sediments under heavy rainfalls; in CT and SM, this percentage increased to 61% and 74%, respectively. Regular sediment inputs are required for deltas to maintain their surface elevation relative to sea level, which is important for avoiding salinization, erosion, and flooding. However, fluvial sediment inputs to deltas are being threatened by changes in upstream catchments due to climate and land use change and, particularly, reservoir construction. In this research, the global hydrogeomorphic model WBMsed is used to project and contrast ‘pristine’ (no anthropogenic impacts) and ‘recent’ historical fluvial sediment delivery to the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, Mahanadi, and Volta deltas. Additionally, 12 potential future scenarios of environmental change comprising combinations of four climate and three socioeconomic pathways, combined with a single construction timeline for future reservoirs, were simulated and analysed. The simulations of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta showed a large decrease in sediment flux over time, regardless of future scenario, from 669 Mt/a in a ‘pristine’ world, through 566 Mt/a in the ‘recent’ past, to 79–92 Mt/a by the end of the 21st century across the scenarios (total average decline of 88%). In contrast, for the Mahanadi delta the simulated sediment delivery increased between the ‘pristine’ and ‘recent’ past from 23 Mt/a to 40 Mt/a (+77%), and then decreased to 7–25 Mt/a by the end of the 21st century. The Volta delta shows a large decrease in sediment delivery historically, from 8 to 0.3 Mt/a (96%) between the ‘pristine’ and ‘recent’ past, however over the 21st century the sediment flux changes little and is predicted to vary between 0.2 and 0.4 Mt/a dependent on scenario. For the Volta delta, catchment management short of removing or re-engineering the Volta dam would have little effect, however without careful management of the upstream catchments these deltas may be unable to maintain their current elevation relative to sea level, suggesting increasing salinization, erosion, flood hazards, and adaptation demands. Pollutants' dynamics in rivers flowing through industrial areas is linked to the entrainment and transport of contaminants attached to solid particles. The transport of sediment is mainly associated to high discharges and flood episodes, and these events constitute one of the main factors causing fluxes of buried pollutants in rivers. We performed a field study in the lower River Cinca (Ebro basin, Northeast Spain) to quantify the mobilization and transfer of several contaminants present in the river bed sediments. We focused on contaminants previously identified (PCBs, DDXs, PBDEs, HBCDs and PFRs) to occur in the river. River bed sediment samples were collected during low flows and a subsequent sampling campaign was used to capture sediment borne contaminants during a flood event. Water samples were taken at the same locations as the static sediment samples and used to determine the suspended sediment concentrations and the contaminants content (i.e. mass of contaminant per sediment mass unit) during the event. We estimated mass fluxes for both sediment and pollutants, and determined that sediment transport followed a clockwise hysteresis. This is typically observed in high flow events after dry summer periods. With sediments there was a large mobilization of PFRs (36 kg in 48 h in one of the main tributaries) and PCBs not previously observed in the static sediment. Observed contaminant load ranges during the two-day sampling campaign were: PCB (34–152 g), DDT (12–213 g), PBDE (50–1740 g), HBCD (0–2.2 g) and PFR (2410–35,895 g). An environmental risk assessment was carried out by comparing the pollutant concentrations found in the sediments with the Canadian quality guidelines (ISQC), showing a significant noncompliance for PCBs in dynamic sediments. Our results point out to the need of a regular assessment of the downstream transfer of the sediment-borne pollutants in drainage basins historically affected by intense industrial activities and associated contamination. Two decades after the construction of the first major dam, the Mekong basin and its six riparian countries have seen rapid economic growth and development of the river system. Hydropower dams, aggregate mines, flood-control dykes, and groundwater-irrigated agriculture have all provided short-term economic benefits throughout the basin. However, it is becoming evident that anthropic changes are significantly affecting the natural functioning of the river and its floodplains. We now ask if these changes are risking major adverse impacts for the 70 million people living in the Mekong Basin. Many livelihoods in the basin depend on ecosystem services that will be strongly impacted by alterations of the sediment transport processes that drive river and delta morpho-dynamics, which underpin a sustainable future for the Mekong basin and Delta. Drawing upon ongoing and recently published research, we provide an overview of key drivers of change (hydropower development, sand mining, dyking and water infrastructures, climate change, and accelerated subsidence from pumping) for the Mekong's sediment budget, and their likely individual and cumulative impacts on the river system. Our results quantify the degree to which the Mekong delta, which receives the impacts from the entire connected river basin, is increasingly vulnerable in the face of declining sediment loads, rising seas and subsiding land. Without concerted action, it is likely that nearly half of the Delta's land surface will be below sea level by 2100, with the remaining areas impacted by salinization and frequent flooding. The threat to the Delta can be understood only in the context of processes in the entire river basin. The Mekong River case can serve to raise awareness of how the connected functions of river systems in general depend on undisturbed sediment transport, thereby informing planning for other large river basins currently embarking on rapid economic development. Although the proxies based on elemental geochemistry of siliciclastic sediments have been well developed to indicate the intensity of chemical weathering in various catchments, their geological indications and limitations, and especially how the differentiation of minerals and sediment grain size influences the applications of these proxies needs more clarification. This paper investigates the interactive effects of weathering, hydraulic sorting and sedimentary recycling on river sediment chemistry, and further validates the application of various weathering indices by measuring mineralogical and geochemical compositions of bank sediments and suspended particulate matters (SPMs) from five rivers in East China bearing various sizes, geologic settings and climatic regimes. For a specific river, the silicate weathering intensity registered in the fine SPMs is systematically stronger than that in the coarse-grained bank sediments. Most of the weathering indices not only reflect the integrated weathering history of various catchments but also depend on hydraulic sorting effect during sediment transport and depositional processes. The correlation between CIA (chemical index of alteration) and WIP (weathering index of Parker) offers an approach to predict the weathering trends of the fine SPMs, coarse bank sediments and recycled sediments under the influence of quartz dilution. To minimize the effects of hydrodynamic sorting and sedimentary recycling, we suggest that the fine sediments (e.g. SPMs and <2 μm fraction of bank sediments) in rivers can better reflect the average of present-day weathering crust in catchments and the weathered terrigenous materials into marginal seas and oceans. After more than 50,000 dams were built in the Yangtze basin, especially the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) in 2003, the sediment discharge to the East China Sea decreased from 470 Mt/yr before dams to the current level of ~140 Mt/yr. The delta sediment's response to this decline has interested many researchers. Based on a dataset of repeated samplings at 44 stations in this study, we compared the surficial sediment grain sizes in the southern Yangtze subaqueous delta front for two periods: pre-TGD (1982) and post-TGD (2012). External factors of the Yangtze River, including water discharge, sediment discharge and suspended sediment grain size, were analysed, as well as wind speed, tidal range and wave height of the coastal ocean. We found that the average median size of the sediments in the delta front coarsened from 8.0 µm in 1982 to 15.4 µm in 2012. This coarsening was accompanied by a decrease of clay components, better sorting and more positive skewness. Moreover, the delta morphology in the study area changed from an overall accretion of 1.0 cm/yr to an erosion of − 0.6 cm/yr. At the same time, the riverine sediment discharge decreased by 70%, and the riverine suspended sediment grain size increased from 8.4 µm to 10.5 µm. The annual wind speed and wave height slightly increased by 2% and 3%, respectively, and the tidal range showed no change trend. Considering the increased wind speed and wave height, there was no evidence that the capability of the China Coastal Current to transport sediment southward has declined in recent years. The sediment coarsening in the Yangtze delta front was thus mainly attributed to the delta's transition from accumulation to erosion which was originally generated by river damming. Channel bars are a major depositional feature in alluvial rivers and their morphodynamics has been investigated intensively in the past several decades. However, relatively less is known about how channel bars in alluvial rivers respond to river engineering and regulations. In this study, we assessed 30-yr morphologic changes of 30 large emerged bars located in a 223 km reach of the highly regulated Lower Mississippi River from Vicksburg, Mississippi, to the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River diversion. Landsat imagery and river stage data between 1985 and 2015 were utilized to characterize bar morphologic features and quantify decadal changes. Based on bar surface areas estimated with the satellite images at different river stages, a rating curve was developed for each of the 30 bars to determine their volumes. Results from this study show that the highly regulated river reach favored the growth of mid-channel and attached bars, while more than half of the point bars showed degradation. Currently, the mid-channel and attached bars accounted for 38% and 34% of the total volume of the 30 bars. The average volume of a single mid-channel bar is over two times that of an attached bar and over four times that of a point bar. Overall, in the past three decades, the total volume of the studied 30 bars increased by 110,118,000 m 3 (41%). Total dike length in a dike field was found mostly contributing to the bar volume increase. Currently, the emerged volume of the 30 bars was estimated approximately 378,183,000 m 3 . The total bar volume is equivalent to ~ 530 million metric tons of coarse sand, based on an average measured bulk density of 1.4 t/m 3 for the bar sediment. Phthalates are an emerging class of environmental pollutants whose distribution and effects in aquatic environments are not well characterized. We analyzed intertidal and emerged beach sediments from the Abruzzo coastline, along the Adriatic Sea, finding significant phthalate concentrations in marine sediments. Phthalate baseline levels in the intertidal environment, marked by substantial interplay of sediment, water and air, were determined. We used statistical rank methods to select representative phthalate compositions, for which we derived risk levels for ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation. Our study shows that phthalates are a major cause of pollution along the Abruzzo coast, with river transport of sediments a continuous source of replenishment. Phthalate concentrations in two specific sites were determined to be of the same order of magnitude as the safety, remediation-warranting, threshold set by Italian law. Phthalates, heavy metals, PAHs appear to be correlated. We discuss possible intervention and mitigation strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tracking sediment movement is typically done with artificial radionuclides. However, this can be environmentally harmful and does not allow for sediment classification. Naturally occurring radionuclides are consequently offered as an alternative. In this study, a mobile Delta Underwater Gamma System (DUGS) capable of measuring low levels of natural radionuclides in sediment was deployed in an estuary, and a radiometric map of the sediment was constructed. Spatial autocorrelation using the Moran's I statistic was used to investigate the spatial distribution patterns of natural radionuclides in the sediments. Hotspot analysis using Getis-Ord* was used to validate and map areas that had been identified as clustered by the Moran's I statistic. The Moran's I analysis indicated that 40K displayed a positive spatial autocorrelation with a value of 0.4 and a standardized Z score of 16, thus indicating that the clustering was significant. 238U and 232Th displayed a low Moran's I value but a strong positive correlation, hence indicating some spots of clustering in the river channel. Further analysis of hotspots confirmed that the identified clusters were areas with relatively high radionuclide concentrations. This proved that the hotspot areas identified have a high deposition of sediment. Quantifying the timescale of sedimentary processes in river basins, such as erosion, transport and deposition, and their relationships with geomorphic parameters is important in the context of ongoing climate change. In this study, we combine uranium activity ratios (234U/238U) for fine-grained (<63 μm) fluvial sediments from the Var River basin (Southern French Alps) and inferred sediment residence times, to catchment-scale spatial analysis of geomorphic parameters with the aim to investigate the factors that influence the timescale of hillslope storage and alluvial transport. Our results show that the U isotope composition of sediments and inferred sediment residence time are mostly controlled by geomorphic parameters such as catchment elevation, slope and curvature, rather than catchment lithology. We show that sediment residence times are shorter in steep, high elevation terranes, but markedly increase wherever catchment-averaged slopes <30°, reflecting the transition from bedrock-dominated to soil-covered landscapes. Independent estimates of sediment residence times using spatial data for soil thickness and 10Be-derived denudation rates show good agreement with those calculated from U isotopes. This observation validates the suitability of U isotopes to quantify sediment residence times in river catchments and for investigating how geomorphic processes control the duration of hillslope storage and fluvial transport. Furthermore, these results show that the application of U isotopes to sedimentary deposits provides robust information on the relationship between climate variability and catchment erosion, allowing us to assess the role of intrinsic vs extrinsic controls on sediment routing at the millennial timescale. • Uranium isotopes were measured in sediments of the Var River basin (France). • Catchment elevation and slope are main controls on U isotopes, not lithology. • Elevation and slope also control sediment residence times derived from U isotopes. • Independent estimates of sediment residence times show agreement with U isotopes. In the northwestern East China Sea, sediment transport and mixing in both along-shelf and cross-shelf dimensions are distinguished using quantitative provenance analysis, with an aim to demonstrate a net transport pattern and thereby infer potential transport and dispersal processes over geological timescales. The dataset comprises 328 bottom sediment samples, which were characterized by detrital-mineral and grain-size analyses. Results show that only in the south of the study area the primary source of sediment is the Yangtze River. In the north, instead, three end-member sources, i.e., the Yangtze, Yellow and Huaihe Rivers, are quantified separately using an end-member mixing analysis. Along-coast mixing between the updrift Huaihe–Old Yellow and downdrift Yangtze River systems is minimized. In exchange, offshore sediment transport is enhanced instead. This conversion from along-shelf to cross-shelf transport is attributed to the presence of a large-scale radial tidal current system off the Jiangsu coast as well as the headland effect produced by the protruding north flank of the subaerial Yangtze delta and the Yangtze riverine plume. This radial tidal current system acts both as a trap for Huaihe–Old Yellow River sediments transported by the southward-direct longshore current, and as a transfer center for sediment dispersal offshore. Radiating transport pathways virtually indicate an extensive mixing of Yangtze sediments and Old/modern Yellow and Huaihe sediments in the southwestern Yellow and northernmost East China Seas. As an independent dynamic system, it acts as a critical link between the Yangtze and modern/Huaihe–Old Yellow River dispersal systems. Thus, we conclude that these three large-scale dispersal systems and their complex interplay dominate sediment transport, redistribution and mixing on the eastern China continental shelf. This study presents the development of a 3D numerical code for flow-sediment interactions with associated bed changes in free surface flows. To capture the water-air interface, a novel volume of fluid (VOF) formulation is implemented using the ghost fluid method with one-side extrapolation for dynamic pressure. Equations for fluid flow and free surface motion are decoupled due to separation of time scales. Accordingly, time step size can be increased by a factor of 3-orders of magnitude and still preserve numerical stability and computational efficiency. A novel finite area method (FAM) is utilized to discretize Exner equation on irregular bed surface providing a 3D finite volume-like discretization on curved surfaces. The evolution of the water-sediment interface is captured by a novel vertex-based unstructured mesh dynamic motion solve using Laplace operator with variable diffusivity. The code is implemented in foam-extend and tested against two classical experiments. Good results are obtained with correct trends and lower absolute error compared to previous mobile bed models. This shows that the developed code has a good potential of being applied to mobile-bed hydraulic real problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rivers can experience sudden pulses of sediment, from human and natural erosion processes, that can accumulate in the bed. Abundant studies have examined the sources and dynamics of sediment pulses, and problems caused by these pulses, particularly flooding, avulsions, and habitat simplification. Much less has been written about what managers can do about sediment pulses, and that is the purpose of this review. The first option for managers is to do nothing, and this decision can be informed by many case studies and by theory on the propagation and character of sediment pulses (their diffusion, translation, and celerity). Doing nothing should be informed by the secondary effects of sediment pulses on channels including; widening, avulsions, and tributary interactions. If managers decide that something needs to be done about the sediment, they have four options: (1) reducing the sediment supply at source, (2) trapping sediment in the channel (3) accelerating sediment transport through a reach, and, (4) directly extracting sediment. The most common of these actions is undoubtedly to reduce the supply at source, but there are few examples of the consequences of this for sediment pulses. There are even fewer examples of trapping, accelerating and extracting sediment. All of these options have great potential for managing sediment pulses, however, they also have the potential to trigger incision of tributaries and of the channel behind the passing sediment wave. Overall, the literature equips managers to understand the dynamics of sediment pulses, but it does not yet equip them to confidently manage these geomorphic events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information on recent changes in sediment yields from small catchments provides a better understanding of temporal trends in soil loss from certain physical and human-influenced landscapes that have been subjected to recent environmental changes, and will help bridge the current knowledge gap that exists between hillslope erosion and sediment transport in rivers. The Yimeng Mountain region, characterized by alternating granite and limestone, is one of the most susceptible regions to soil erosion in northern China, and has been subjected to intensive anthropogenic activity in recent years. Soil loss from areas underlain by granite is particularly obvious, and is the main sediment source for the Yihe River. In this study, we used reservoir deposits to estimate the changes in sediment yields over the past ~ 50 years from a small catchment underlain by granite, namely the Jiangzhuang catchment in the Yimeng Mountain region. Three cores were collected from the Jiangzhuang Reservoir in the catchment. The activities of 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex at different depths, clay (grain size < 5 μm) contents, and sedimentary organic carbon (SOC) contents in the cores were analysed with reference to human activity and environmental change in the catchment. The chronologies of the cores were established by 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex dating. The area-specific sediment yield ( SSY ) for different time periods since dam construction was estimated from each core by referring to the original capacity curve of the reservoir. The results indicate that the depth profiles of 137 Cs, 210 Pb ex , clay, and SOC contents in cores from the Jiangzhuang Reservoir reflect the general history of human disturbances on the catchment over the past ~ 50 years. The estimated SSY value from each core for each period ranged from 7.2 ± 2.7 to 23.7 ± 8.3 t ha − 1 y − 1 , with a mean of 12.5 ± 4.6 t ha − 1 y − 1 . SSY decreased during 1954–1972, and then showed a general tendency to increase. Many rivers in the Mediterranean region are regulated for urban and agricultural purposes. Reservoir presence and operation results in flow alteration and sediment discontinuity, altering the longitudinal structure of the fluvial system. This study presents a 3-year sediment budget of a highly dammed Mediterranean river (the Muga, southern Pyrenees), which has experienced flow regulation since the 1969 owing to a 61-hm 3 reservoir. Flow discharge and suspended sediment concentration were monitored immediately upstream and downstream from the reservoir, whereas bedload transport was estimated by means of bedload formulae and estimated from regional data. Results show how the dam modifies river flow, reducing the magnitude of floods and shortening its duration. At the same time, duration of low flows increases. The downstream flow regime follows reservoir releases that are mostly driven by the irrigation needs in the lowlands. Likewise, suspended sediment and bedload transport are shown to be notably affected by the dam. Sediment transport upstream was mainly associated with floods and was therefore concentrated in short periods of time (i.e., > 90% of the sediment load occurred in < 1% of the time). Downstream from the dam, sediments were transported more constantly (i.e., 90% of the load was carried during 50% of the time). Total sediment load upstream from the dam equalled 23,074 t, while downstream it was < 1000 t. Upstream, sediment load was equally distributed between suspension and bedload (i.e., 10,278 and 12,796 t respectively), whereas suspension dominated sediment transport downstream. More than 95% of the sediments transported from the upstream basins were trapped in the reservoir, a fact that explains the sediment deficit and the river bed armouring observed downstream. Overall, the dam disrupted the natural water and sediment fluxes, generating a highly modified environment downstream. River training works performed in the last couple of centuries constrained the natural dynamics of channel networks in locations that include the confluences between tributaries and main channels. As a result, the dynamics of these confluences are currently characterized by homogeneous flow depths, flow velocities, and morphologic conditions, which are associated with impoverished ecosystems. The widening of river reaches is seen as a useful measure for river restoration, as it enhances the heterogeneity in flow depths, flow velocities, sediment transport, and bed substrates. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of local widening of the tributary mouth as well as the effects of the ratio between the width of the tributary and that of the main channel on the flow dynamics and bed morphology of river confluences. For that purpose, 12 experiments were conducted in a 70° laboratory confluence. In these experiments, three unit-discharge ratios were tested ( q r = 0.37, 0.50, and 0.77) with two width ratios and two tributary configurations. The unit-discharge ratio is defined as the unit discharge in the tributary divided by that of the main channel, measured upstream of the confluence. The width ratio, which is defined as the width of the tributary divided by that of the main channel, was modified by changing the width of the main channel from 0.50 to 1.00 m (corresponding to B r = 0.30 and 0.15 respectively). The tributary configurations consisted of (i) a straight reach with a constant width (the so-called reference configuration ) and (ii) a straight reach with a local widening at the downstream end (the so-called widened configuration ). During the experiments, a uniform sediment mixture was continuously supplied to both channels. This experimental setup is novel among existing experimental studies on confluence dynamics, as it addresses new confluence configurations and includes a continuous sediment supply to both channels. The experiments were run until the outgoing sediment rate was nearly the same as the incoming; i.e., equilibrium had been achieved. The bed topography and water surface were then recorded in both channels. The results reveal that the width ratio and the locally widened tributary reach influence the dynamics of the confluence. The different width ratios influenced the size of the bank-attached bar at equilibrium, which was wider and longer for B r = 0.15 than for B r = 0.30. Other morphological differences were observed at equilibrium for the different width ratios, such as deeper scour holes and increased penetration of the tributary into the main channel. These differences were attributed to the different values of the ratio between the unit momentum-flux of the tributary and that of the main channel that were noted at equilibrium for the different width ratios. The local widening of the downstream reach of the tributary significantly enhanced the heterogeneity in flow depth, flow velocity, and bed morphology within the widened reach. This heterogeneity contrasts with the homogeneity observed in the tributary without widening (reference configuration). Fluvial sediment is the major source for the formation and development of the Mekong Delta. This paper aims to analyse the dynamics of suspended sediment and to investigate the roles of different processes in order to explore flux pattern changes. We applied modelling on two scales, comprising a large-scale model (the whole delta) to consider the upstream characteristics, particularly the Tonle Sap Lake's flood regulation, and a smaller-scale model (tidal rivers and shelf) to understand the sediment processes on the subaqueous delta. A comprehensive comparison to in-situ measurements and remote sensing data demonstrated that the model is capable of qualitatively simulating sediment dynamics on the subaqueous delta. It estimates that the Mekong River supplied an amount of 41.5 mil tons from April 2014 to April 2015. A substantial amount of sediment delivered by the Mekong River is deposited in front of the river mouths in the high flow season and resuspended in the low flow season. A sensitivity analysis shows that waves, baroclinic effects and bed composition strongly influence suspended sediment distribution and transport on the shelf. Waves in particular play an essential role in sediment resuspension. The development of this model is an important step towards an operational model for scientific and engineering applications, since the model is capable of predicting tidal propagation and discharge distribution through the main branches, and in predicting the seasonal SSC and erosion/deposition patterns on the shelf, while it is forced by readily available inputs: discharge at Kratie (Cambodia), GFS winds, ERA40 reanalysis waves, and TPXO 8v1 HR tidal forcing. This introduction to the special issue entitled, “Sediment- and hydro-dynamics of the Mekong Delta: from tidal river to continental shelf”, describes the setting and program design of collaborative studies with integrated field and modeling experiments in 2014–2015, along with associated research in the region. The Mekong River is among the largest on Earth in terms of water discharge, and much of the sediment delivered from the Tibetan Plateau has accumulated in the subaerial and subaqueous components of the Mekong Delta. As a group, the papers in this special issue describe the portion of the system where the sediment source signal is altered along the tidally influenced river and is delivered to the shorelines and continental shelf. The linked studies provide a holistic view of the system, and emphasize the interactions between hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in sub-environments as sediment makes its way along the path from source to sink. The seasonal pattern of sediment dynamics on an inner shelf characterized by the presence of sediment delivered by a small, mountainous river (with a “flash-flood” regime) was investigated. Near-bottom suspended sediment fluxes across the shelf (i.e. 20, 30 and 40 m water depth) were estimated using observations from three benthic tripods deployed from September 2007 to June 2008. Near-bottom sediment resuspension was controlled by wave-induced currents and river-born sediment availability, whereas the shelf currents played a secondary role. Fourteen sediment transport events were identified (eight in autumn, two in winter and four in spring), with transport rates according to storm intensity and sediment availability. These few energetic events induced a large percentage of the cumulative sediment transport near the bottom. However, the lack of proportionality between suspended sediment transport rates and the combined wave-current bottom shear stress in some events highlights the importance of the sequence of events in sediment dynamics. Since wave activity, hydrography and river discharges display a strong seasonal pattern in the NW Mediterranean, the resulting sediment dynamics across the shelf also correspond to a seasonal cycle. This seasonal variability leads to a temporal evolution of the bottom grain size (coarser in winter) and the near-bottom sediment transport rates (higher in spring and autumn) which is consistent with the seasonal pattern of the hydrodynamic events and the river discharge load. In this study, we aim to investigate the overall morphological evolution of the Jiangsu coast after 1855, when the Yellow River shifted northward. We focus on fine sediment transport between two large-scale geomorphological units, i.e., the Abandoned Yellow River Delta (AYD) and the Radial Sand Ridges (RSRs). An existing morphodynamic model, which was established for reproducing the development of the AYD before 1855, is modified and extended. In addition to the tidal forcing, waves and human interventions (i.e., revetments) are considered in the model. The model results are compared with the existing data. Both the evolution trend of the Jiangsu coast and the spatial distribution of the offshore shoals show good agreement. The simulated fine sediment depositions in different periods are consistent with the geological measurements. The results reveal that the old Yellow River-derived sediment not only contributes to the sedimentation in the RSRs but can also be transported to the adjacent zones, especially farther south/southeast. Moreover, the spatial distribution of fine sediment deposits varies in the RSRs. The different sedimentary environments in the Dongsha and Tiaozini ridges result in significant grain size differences in these two neighboring ridges. A sensitivity analysis indicates that tides play a key role in dominating the long-term morphological evolution of the Jiangsu coast and the total erosion from the AYD. On smaller scales, the effect of revetments (built since the 1930s) on the evolution of the nearshore zone and the effect of wind waves on the erosion of offshore shoals are relatively important. The effect of a gradual coarsening process of bottom sediment along the Jiangsu coast, which may be due to continuous fine sediment removal, is identified. Fine sediment depositions in the Tiaozini ridge and in the northern offshore zone of the RSRs are relatively more sensitive to the coarsening trend of bottom sediment than other areas.
