This study examines the extent to which depressive symptoms mediate the link between childhood friendship (CF) and physical function among middle-aged and older adults in China. China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data were used; specifically, CHARLS life history survey (conducted from June 1–December 31, 2014) and follow-up health survey (conducted from July 1–September 30, 2015) data were used. The Sobel test, Bootstrap test and multivariable logistic regression were performed to examine the mediating role of depressive symptoms (measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in the association between CF (measured by a standardized retrospective questionnaire) and physical function, which was measured by basic activities of daily living (BADL) disability, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability, and grip strength. A total of 12,170 participants aged 45 years or older were included in this cross-sectional study. After controlling for covariates, low-quality CF was associated with an increased prevalence of BADL disability (OR = 1.18; 95 % CI = 1.05–1.32), IADL disability (OR = 1.25; 95 % CI = 1.12–1.40), and low grip strength (OR = 1.21; 95 % CI = 1.09–1.34). The proportion of the mediating effect of depressive symptoms was 48 % for CF and BADL, 40 % for CF and IADL, and 11 % for CF and grip strength. Depressive symptoms and worse CF have a joint effect on BADL disability (OR = 3.30; 95 % CI = 2.82–3.85), IADL disability (OR = 3.52; 95 % CI = 3.03–4.09), and low grip strength (OR = 1.65; 95 % CI = 1.43–1.92). Not all potential confounding factors (such as childhood behavioural problems, genetic factors, and memory function) were measured in the analysis, and there may have been recall bias in the retrospective collection of CF data. Individuals with high-quality CF were more likely to have a decreased prevalence of impaired physical function in later life. Physical symptoms such as pain and cancer-related fatigue limit physical function and activities of daily living among patients with terminal cancer, which can lead to a decline in quality of life. Therefore, comprehensive functional impairments should be evaluated to determine the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of palliative treatment. To validate the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the Edmonton Functional Assessment Tool 2 (EFAT2-J). We developed a Japanese version of the EFAT-2 in accordance with international guidelines. To verify the reliability and validity of the EFAT2-J, patients were evaluated by a physiotherapist and a nurse separately, and correlations with existing evaluation scales for physical function, physical symptoms, and quality of life were analyzed, respectively. The significance level was set at 5%. Twenty patients participated in the reliability measurement. The average EFAT2-J scores were 7.95 ± 4.12 for physical therapists and 7.20 ± 4.23 for nurses, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.95. The weighted kappa coefficient (κ) for each item was 0.57–1.00. Fifty-five patients participated in the validity measurement. The EFAT2-J showed significant correlations with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status and the Karnofsky Performance Scale, Barthel Index, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 15-Palliative Care sub-item "physical function." These results indicate that the EFAT2-J has robust psychometric properties and is useful for evaluating physical function in patients with terminal cancer, and thus may be an acceptable clinical instrument in research and practice. Deficits in physical function that occur with aging contribute to declines in quality of life and increased mortality. There has been a growing interest in examining associations between physical function and neurobiology. Whereas high levels of white matter disease have been found in individuals with mobility impairments in structural brain studies, much less is known about the relationship between physical function and functional brain networks. Even less is known about the association between modifiable risk factors such as body mass index (BMI) and functional brain networks. The current study examined baseline functional brain networks in 192 individuals from the Brain Networks and mobility (B-NET) study, an ongoing longitudinal, observational study in community-dwelling adults aged 70 and older. Physical function and BMI were found to be associated with sensorimotor and dorsal attention network connectivity. There was a synergistic interaction such that high physical function and low BMI were associated with the highest network integrity. White matter disease did not modify these relationships. To examine the prevalence, severity, and co-occurrence of SPPADE symptoms as well as their association with cancer type and patient characteristics. The SPPADE symptoms (sleep disturbance, pain, physical function impairment, anxiety, depression, and low energy /fatigue) are prevalent, co-occurring, and undertreated in oncology and other clinical populations. Baseline SPPADE symptom data were analyzed from the E2C2 study, a stepped wedge pragmatic, population-level, cluster randomized clinical trial designed to evaluate a guideline-informed symptom management model targeting the six SPPADE symptoms. Symptom prevalence and severity were measured with a 0–10 numeric rating (NRS) scale for each of the six symptoms. Prevalence of severe (NRS ≥ 7) and potential clinically relevant (NRS ≥ 5) symptoms as well as co-occurrence of clinical symptoms were determined. Distribution-based methods were used to estimate the minimally important difference (MID). Associations of cancer type and patient characteristics with a SPPADE composite score were analyzed. A total of 31,886 patients were assessed for SPPADE symptoms prior to, during, or soon after an outpatient medical oncology encounter. The proportion of patients with a potential clinically relevant symptom ranged from 17.5% for depression to 33.4% for fatigue. Co-occurrence of symptoms was high, with the proportion of patients with three or more additional clinically relevant symptoms ranging from 45.2% for fatigue to 68.6% for depression. The summed SPPADE composite score demonstrated good internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha of 0.86), with preliminary MID estimates of 4.1–4.3. Symptom burden differed across several types of cancer but was generally similar across most sociodemographic characteristics. • This is the first prospective study of functional decline across glycemic transitions. • A transition from normal to diabetes was associated with an accelerated concomitant decline in cognition and functioning. • Associations with prediabetes were not observed. Evidence about the decline of cognition and physical function across glycemic status (normoglycemia, prediabetes, and diabetes) is inconsistent. We evaluated longitudinal changes in cognition and physical function according to glycemic status and also different glycemic transitions. Population-based cohort study. 9307 participants (mean age 59.7 years, 53.7 % women) were included from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011–2018). Global cognition (assessed by orientation, memory, and executive function) and physical function (calculated as the sum of impaired basic and instrumental activities of daily living) were assessed in each wave. The glycemic status was assessed in waves 2011 and 2015. Diabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L, HbA1c ≥6.5 %, self-reported diabetes, or glucose-lowering medication use. Prediabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose 5.6–6.9 mmol/L or an HbA1c of 5.7–6.4 %. Compared with normoglycemia, baseline diabetes was associated with a faster decline in orientation (−0.018 SD/year, 95%CI -0.032, −0.004) and a faster increase in physical function score (0.082 /year, 95%CI 0.038, 0.126). We did not observe any effect of prediabetes on the changing rate of cognition and physical function. Progression from normoglycemia to diabetes between waves 2011 and 2015 was associated with a significantly faster decline in global cognition, memory, executive function, and physical function compared with stable normoglycemia. Baseline diabetes was associated with accelerated decline of cognition and physical function. Patients with either diabetes (DM) or depression (DP) are prone to developing other diseases and require more medical resources than do the general population. This study aimed to examine health-related quality of life, medical resource use, and physical function of patients with both diabetes mellitus and depression, and the magnitude of effects among patients with different combinations of comorbid diseases. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2009 to 2014. Total 16,159 patients were studied and classified into one of 4 groups: both DM and DP(DM+/DP+), DM+/without DP(DP−), without DM (DM−)/DP+, and DM−/DP−, according to the perceived score in Patient Health Questionnaire and diabetes questionnaire in NHANES. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), medical resource use, and physical function were measured as outcomes of interests. Multivariate logistic regression models were used. Compared with DM−/DP− patients, the DM+/DP+ (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 2.59; 95 % CI: 1.77–3.80) and DM−/DP+ (AOR: 2.44; 95 % CI: 1.94–3.06) had greater likely to have worse health. In addition, the DM+/DP+ (AOR: 5.40; 95 % CI: 1.30–22.41) and DM+/DP− (AOR: 2.49; 95 % CI: 1.91–3.25) were more likely to have medical visits, and worse physical function. This study found that both depression and diabetes mellitus worsen HRQoL, increase medical resource use, and decrease physical function. Mental health and physical health are intrinsically linked, yet the mechanisms are not well understood. We investigated whether moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) mediated the association between depression and physical function (PF) in midlife. Individuals from two UK birth cohorts born within one week in 1958 (n = 7278) and 1970 (n = 6097) with data on depression (ages 33/34; Malaise Inventory), MVPA (age 42; self-reported) and PF (ages 50/56; Short Form-36 subscale). Covariates included sex, childhood and adulthood social class, maternal mental health, childhood mood, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, sleep, marital status, BMI and long-standing illness/disability. Linear or multinomial logistic regression models examined associations between depression, MVPA and PF. We used a parametric g-computation mediation analysis approach to estimate percent differences in PF. Depression was associated with less frequent MVPA and poorer PF. Lower MVPA was associated with worse PF. The direct effect – randomised analogue not operating via MVPA – of depression on PF was −18.8 % (95%CI:--25.8,-11.8) and −15.8 % (20.6,-11.0) in the 1958 and 1970 cohorts, respectively. The indirect effect – operating via MVPA – was −0.5 % (−1.0,-0.03) and −0.2 % (−0.6, 0.3), resulting in a total proportion mediated of 3.1 % (0.1, 6.0) and 0.9 % (−1.6, 3.4). MVPA was self-reported. Intermediate confounders and mediators were measured at the same age, however associations did not change in sensitivity analysis considering age 46 MVPA (1958 cohort). Although higher MVPA was protective against poor PF, there was only minor evidence that it mediated the association between depression and PF. The goal of this study is to determine whether preoperative patient activation measure (PAM) predicts minimum clinically important difference (MCID) for Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) pain, physical function, depression, and anxiety for patients undergoing elective spine surgery. Retrospective review. A single-institution, academic database of patients undergoing elective spine surgery. MCID at 1-year follow-up for PROMIS pain, physical function, depression and anxiety. We retrospectively reviewed a single-institution, academic database of patients undergoing elective spine surgery. Preoperative patient activation was evaluated using the PAM-13 survey, which was used to stratify patients into four activation stages. Primary outcome variable was achieving MCID at 1-year follow-up for PROMIS pain and physical function. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine impact of patient activation on PROMIS pain and the physical function. Of the 430 patients, 220 (51%) were female with a mean age of 58.2±16.8. Preoperatively, 34 (8%) were in activation stage 1, 45 (10%) in stage 2, 98 (23%) in stage 3, and 253 (59%) in stage 4. At 1-year follow up, 248 (58%) achieved MCID for PROMIS physical function, 256 (60%) achieved MCID for PROMIS pain, 151 (35.28%) achieved MCID for PROMIS depression, and 197 (46%) achieved MCID for PROMIS anxiety. For PROMIS physical function, when compared to patients at stage 1 activation, patients at stage 2 (aOR:3.49, 95% CI:1.27, 9.59), stage 3 (aOR:3.54, 95% CI:1.40, 8.98) and stage 4 (aOR:7.88, 95% CI:3.29, 18.9) were more likely to achieve MCID. For PROMIS pain, when compared against patients at stage 1, patients at stage 3 (aOR:2.82, 95% CI:1.18, 6.76) and stage 4 (aOR:5.44, 95% CI:2.41, 12.3) were more likely to achieve MCID. For PROMIS depression, when compared against patients at stage 1, patients at stage 4 were more likely to achieve MCID (Adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR):2.59, 95% CI:1.08–6.19). For PROMIS anxiety, when compared against patients at stage 1, stage 3 (Adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR):3.21, 95% CI:1.20–8.57), and stage 4 (aOR:5.56, 95% CI:2.20–14.01) were more likely to achieve MCID. Patients at higher stages of activation were more likely to achieve MCID for PROMIS pain, physical function, depression, and anxiety at 1-year follow-up. Purpose: We examined the associations between pulmonary impairments and physical function and whether age, HIV serostatus, or smoking modified these relationships.Methods: Using Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study data, we examined associations between pulmonary function (diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide [DLCO], one-second forced expiratory volume [FEV1]) and subsequent physical outcomes (gait speed, grip strength, frailty [non-frail, pre-frail, frail]) using mixed models.Results: Of 1,048 men, 55% were living with HIV, median age was 57(IQR=48,64) and median cumulative pack-years was 1.2(IQR = 0,18.1); 33% and 13% had impaired DLCO and FEV1(<80% predicted), respectively. Participants with impaired DLCO had 3.5 kg (95%CI: -4.6, -2.4) weaker grip strength, 0.04 m/sec (95%CI: -0.06, -0.02) slower gait speed and 4.44-fold (95%CI: 1.81, 10.93) greater odds of frailty compared to participants with normal DLCO. Participants with impaired FEV1 had 3.1 kg (95%CI: -4.8, -1.4) weaker grip strength, similar gait speed (-0.001 m/sec [95%CI: -0.04, 0.03]) and 5.72-fold (95%CI: 1.90, 17.19) greater odds of frailty compared to participants with normal FEV1. Age, but not smoking or HIV, significantly modified the DLCO effect on gait speed and grip strength.Conclusions: Pulmonary impairment and decreased physical function were associated. Purpose: This study examined whether employment status during mid-life and older adulthood is associated with physical function impairment.Methods: Participants were 2700 women in the multiracial/multiethnic Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Time-varying, lagged, and cumulative exposure analyses modeled associations between self-reported employment status and the likelihood of severe physical function impairment across 19 years of follow-up.Results: Independent of demographic variables, women who were not working (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.22, 2.04) or employed part-time (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.04, 1.61) were more likely to report severe physical function impairments than women employed full-time. This same pattern was seen in lagged analyses predicting risk of physical function impairment from employment status at the prior assessment (not working vs. full-time: OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.08, 2.18; part-time vs. full-time: OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.17, 2.00). The likelihood of severe physical function impairment increased by 20% for every additional 10% of follow-up spent not working (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.03). Associations were robust to adjustment for health-related variables, body mass index, and physical activity.Conclusions: Women with lower levels of employment from mid-life to older adulthood were more likely to experience severe impairment in physical function. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between frequently used patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures and a multitask performance outcome (PerfO) measure of general physical function (PF) and to examine the association of these measures with depressive mood, pain, and age.Methods: Frequently used PRO measures of general PF (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System [PROMIS] PF item bank, PROMIS PF Short Form 20a, Short Form 36 Physical Function Scale) and a PerfO test battery, namely, the Physical Performance Test (PPT), were administered to 78 adult patients from 3 inpatient clinics (cardiology and angiology, rheumatology and clinical immunology, and psychosomatic medicine) at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Pearson correlations were used to investigate the associations between PRO measures and the PPT. To explore the predictive value of age, depressive symptoms, and pain intensity, we conducted multiple linear regression analysis for each PF measure.Results: We found strong linear relationships between PRO measures and PPT sum scores. Correlations between PPT sum scores and PROMIS PF T-scores were r > 0.75. For all PRO and PerfO measures, age was a predictor of general PF whereas depressive mood was not found to be a relevant predictor. Moreover, pain intensity was found to be a significant predictor of PRO measures but not for PPT sum scores.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that frequently used PRO measures and a multitask PerfO measure of general PF can be used to measure a common PF construct. To compare perioperative outcomes, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and minimum clinically important difference achievement after single-level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in patients stratified by preoperative comorbidity burden. PROMs were administered preoperatively/postoperatively and included Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System–Physical Function (PROMIS-PF), visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and 12-Item Short-Form Physical Composite Score (SF-12 PCS). Patients were grouped according to preoperative Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) <5 (mild to moderate comorbidity) or preoperative CCI ≥5 (severe preoperative comorbidity). A 3:1 propensity score match for age, gender, insurance status, smoking status, and preoperative spinal disease was used to control for significant demographic differences between cohorts. After propensity score matching, 255 patients were included (135 in the CCI <5 cohort; 120 in the CCI ≥5 cohort). The CCI ≥5 cohort showed significantly reduced postoperative VAS back pain score on the day of surgery (P < 0.001, all). Mean PROM differences were noted for postoperative PROMs: VAS back and ODI 6 months, both instances favoring the CCI ≥5 cohort (P < 0.038). The CCI <5 cohort improved from baseline to 1 year for all postoperative PROMs except SF-12 PCS 6 weeks and 12 weeks and SF-12 Mental Composite Score 6 weeks (P < 0.034, all). The CCI ≥5 cohort reported significant improvement from preoperative baseline to 1 year for all postoperative PROMs except ODI 6 weeks, SF-12 Mental Composite Score 6 weeks and 1 year, SF-12 PCS 6 weeks, and PROMIS-PF 6 weeks (P < 0.017, all). Both cohorts reported >50% overall minimum clinically important difference achievement rate for VAS leg, VAS back, ODI, SF-12 PCS, and PROMIS-PF. The results suggest that patients undergoing MIS TLIF with severe comorbidities can expect a similar postoperative trajectory for disability, leg and back pain, and physical function. Understanding minimal clinically important differences (MCID) in patient reported outcome measurement are important in improving patient care. The purpose of this study was to determine the MCID of Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement System (PROMIS) Physical Function (PF) domain for patients who underwent operative fixation of a tibial plateau fracture. All patients with tibial plateau fractures that underwent operative fixation at a single level 1 trauma center were identified by Current Procedural Terminology codes. Patients without PROMIS PF scores or an anchor question at two-time points postoperatively were excluded. Anchor-based and distribution-based MCIDs were calculated. The MCID for PROMIS PF scores was 4.85 in the distribution-based method and 3.93 (SD 14.01) in the anchor-based method. There was significantly more improvement in the score from the first postoperative score (<7 weeks) to the second postoperative time (<78 weeks) in the improvement group 10.95 (SD 9.95) compared to the no improvement group 7.02 (SD 9.87) in the anchor-based method (P < 0.001). The percentage of patients achieving MCID at 7 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year were 37–42 %, 57–62 %, 80–84 %, and 95–87 %, respectively. This study identified MCID values for PROMIS PF scores in the tibial plateau fracture population. Both MCID scores were similar, resulting in a reliable value for future studies and clinical decision-making. Objective: Increased body weight has been associated with reduced muscle wasting in the early catabolic phase after a severe burn. Yet, overweight and obese non-burn children often exhibit impaired musculoskeletal function, which may lead to poor physical function (PF). We aimed to determine the association between body mass index (BMI) at discharge and self-reported PF and caregiver proxy-reported PF during recovery of burned children.Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective multisite longitudinal study in paediatric burn patients ((8-17 y old at time of burn). PF outcome measures were self-reported mobility, proxy-reported mobility, and upper extremity PF evaluated using PROMIS measures at 6-, 12-, and 24-months after injury. Primary exposure variable was BMI-for-age at discharge.Results: A total of 118 paediatric patients, aged 11.7 ± 3.3 y, with burns covering 37.6 ± 18.8% of their total body surface area (TBSA) and BMI-for-age of 23.1 ± 5.4 kg/m2 at discharge were analyzed. BMI at discharge was not significantly associated with self-reported mobility scores 6 months after burn (beta coefficient =-0.23, p = 0.31), had a positive effect on mobility at 12 months (beta = 0.46, p = 0.05), and no effect at 24 months after injury (beta=-0.10, p = 0.60), when adjusted for burn size. BMI did not have a significant effect on proxy-reported mobility or upper extremity PF.Conclusion: A greater BMI at discharge was associated with improved self-reported PF at 12 months after burn but not at 6 months or 24 months, which suggests a faster recovery of PF in paediatric patients of larger body weight. Background Context: Preliminary evidence has suggested favorable correlation between National Institutes of Health (NIH) Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) assessments and traditional ("legacy") patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in spine surgery. There has been a significant increase in PROMIS research with regards to spinal conditions.Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to provide an assessment of PROMIS Physical Function (PF) measures in this patient population.Study Design/setting: Systematic review.Methods: A systematic search of the PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase databases was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to identify published articles that referenced the various PROMIS PF measures. Two authors independently reviewed selected studies. The search returned 1,060 studies, 124 of which were selected for independent review by two authors. Of these, 37 were selected for inclusion. Mixed linear models were performed to assess for differences between legacy PROMs and PROMIS measures.Results: The combined sample size of all included studies yielded 10,296 total patients. Overall, PROMIS Physical Function (PF) measures demonstrated strong correlations with legacy PROMs when evaluating spine patients (weighted Pearson correlation, 0.589, standard error [SE]=0.023; weighted Spearman correlation, 0.702, SE=0.028). PROMIS questionnaires had significantly fewer questions than did legacy PROMs (4.2±0.30 vs. 9.53±0.82, p=.015). In spine studies, the PROMIS PF forms were completed in significantly less time than legacy PROMs (48.1±2.9 vs. 174.7±12.6 seconds, p<.001). Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether responses to Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Short Form v2.0 - Physical Function 8c (PROMIS PF8c) items differed when the use of a 7-day recall period was compared with no specified recall period.Methods: Using a within-subject design, we surveyed 1810 individuals from the US general population, administering PROMIS PF8c at survey beginning and end. The order of measure presentation was randomly assigned. We calculated recall difference scores (RDSs) as no recall score minus 7-day recall score using both item response theory-based T scores and raw summed scores. We examined the distribution and created Bland-Altman plots for both RDSTscore and RDSRaw. We also calculated correlations between no recall versus 7-day recall T score and raw scores. Finally, we determined whether differences in no recall versus 7-day recall scores were associated with patient-reported PF.Results: RDSTscore and RDSRaw had means (root mean square differences) of 0.00 (5.43) and -0.04 (3.79), respectively. The vast majority (%) of RDSTscore and RDSRaw values fell between the Bland-Altman limits of agreement (-10.65 to 10.66 and -7.46 to 7.38, respectively). Pearson's correlations between no recall and 7-day recall for T scores and raw scores were 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. Effect sizes for mean RDSTscore and RDSRaw compared across level of Eastern Oncology Cooperative Group performance status, patient global impression of PF severity, and single PF items were near 0.Conclusions: We did not find any significant recall period effect on PF8c responses. • Literature still lacks meta-analytical evidence clarifying the effects of Otago exercise program on physical function in older adults. • The Otago exercise program have significant positive effects on balance, lower body strength and mobility in older adults. • No clear benefits of Otago exercise program are found for upper body strength in older adults. • The Otago exercise program conducted in video-supported, more than 30 min and 4 to 12 weeks may have a greater improvement in physical function among older adults. Maintaining physical function is critical for older adults to achieve healthy aging. The Otago exercise program (OEP) has been widely used to prevent falls for older adults. However, the effects of OEP on physical function remain controversial and the possible effects modifiers have not been assessed. To evaluate the effects of OEP on physical function in older adults and to explore potential moderators underlying the effects of OEP. We searched five electronic databases and relevant systematic reviews to identify studies. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of OEP as a single intervention on physical function among older adults aged 65 and over. Meta-analysis was performed using the random-effects model. Standardized mean differences (SMD) for physical function changes, pertinent to balance, strength, and mobility, were outcome measures. Subgroup analyses on exercise protocol and participants' characteristics were performed. Thirteen RCTs consisting of 2402 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Results indicated a significant effect of OEP on balance (SMD = 0.59, 95 % CI: 0.22∼0.96), lower body strength (SMD = 0.93, 95 % CI: 0.31∼1.55), and mobility (SMD = –0.59, 95 % CI: –0.95∼–0.22) against control groups. No significant OEP effects were found on upper body strength (MD = 1.48, 95 % CI: –0.58∼3.55). Subgroup analysis revealed that the video-supported delivery mode was more effective for improving balance (P = 0.04) and mobility (P = 0.02) than the face-to-face mode. Session durations over 30 min was more effective on lower body strength (P < 0.001) and mobility (P < 0.001) than those 1–30 min. Program period of 13–26 weeks was more effective on mobility (P = 0.02) than those of 4–12 weeks. However, the effects of OEP on physical function were not associated with age groups, and baseline falling risks. The OEP could improve physical function including balance, lower body strength, and mobility in older adults. Implementing the OEP in video-supported, more than 30 min per session and 4–12 weeks may be the most appropriate and effective exercise protocol for improving physical function among older adults. Chronic pain is associated with substantial impairment in physical function, which has been identified as a top concern among persons with pain. GetActive-Fitbit , a mind-body activity program, is feasible, acceptable, and associated with improvement in physical function among primarily White, sedentary individuals with pain. In preparation for a multisite efficacy trial, we must examine feasibility across multiple sites with diverse patient populations. Here we describe the protocol of a multisite, feasibility RCT comparing GetActive-Fitbit with a time- and attention-matched educational comparison (Healthy Living for Pain). We aim to 1) test multisite fidelity of clinician training; 2) evaluate multisite feasibility benchmarks, including recruitment of chronic pain patients taking <5000 steps/day and racial and ethnic minorities; and 3) optimize fidelity and study protocol in preparation for a future multisite efficacy trial. Clinician training fidelity was assessed via roleplays and mock group sessions. Feasibility (i.e., recruitment, acceptability, credibility, adherence, satisfaction), multimodal physical function (e.g., self-report, 6-Minute Walk Test, step-count), and other psychosocial outcomes are assessed at baseline, posttest, and 6 months. Protocol optimization will be assessed using exit interviews and cross-site meetings. The trial is ongoing. Clinician training is complete. 87 participants have been recruited. 54 completed baseline assessments and randomization, 44 are mid-intervention, and 9 have completed the intervention and posttest. This study addresses the critical need for feasible, acceptable mind-body-activity interventions for chronic pain that follow evidence-based guidelines and improve all aspects of physical function across diverse populations. Multiple limitations often co-occur and accumulate, leading to subsequent function decline. However, there is a scarcity of longitudinal studies examining the progression of physical function among the general population of older adults in China. This study aimed to define typical physical function status and its change, which were characterized by the coexistence and accumulation of diverse limitations targeting a Chinese sample of older adults. This study used the three recent public data waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey during a 6-year follow-up period. 9765 individuals who were over 65 and participated in the 2011 survey were included. Latent transition analysis was used to identify the latent physical function status and explore the transition of older adults among different latent statuses. Seven latent statuses of physical function were identified, with visual impairment and related limitations being particularly prevalent among older adults. Upper limb mobility appeared to be a differentiated indicator of physical functional status. Physical function decline mainly started with the limitations in squatting, carrying weights and walking, then to the status with intact upper limb mobility and hearing function only, or converted directly into the latter, then to complete dysfunction. Our findings suggest some indicative limitations and critical steps in the process of functional decline among older adults. These results may provide insight for researchers and policymakers to develop tailored preventive and rehabilitation care and provide support for physically limited elderly according to their latent status and course of functional decline. Describe clinicians' perspectives of facilitators and barriers to eliciting physical function goals from patients with multiple chronic conditions pre- and post-surgery. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with clinicians, recruited from an academic medical center, who treat adult patients with multiple chronic conditions. Purposive sampling ensured multiple provider types were represented. Interviews were conducted in person or via web conference and were audio recorded. Findings were summarized using descriptive qualitative content analysis. Of the 12 participating clinicians, 92% were female and 83% specialized in geriatrics. Clinicians had a mean of 10.7 (min-max: 1–30) years of experience. Key facilitators to goal-setting conversations were sufficient time, familial support, and patient cognitive ability. Barriers included lack of time, lack of training, patient challenges in choosing realistic and specific actionable goals, emotional barriers, and cognitive challenges. Some facilitators and barriers are modifiable, including time, inclusion of family members in the clinical encounter, and clinician training to enable actionable goal setting. These results highlight areas for intervention to facilitate goal elicitation for physical function in clinical care settings. Clinicians should be aware of the barriers impacting eliciting goals. We examined relationships between combinations of protective factors (healthy weight, never smoking, and at least moderate levels of physical activity) and moderate or substantial limitations of physical function (PF) versus minimal PF limitations in women who had had a hysterectomy only (n = 1771) or a hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy (BO) (n = 738) participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. We found a dose-response effect that was strongest for substantial PF limitations; for each additional healthy behaviour, for women who had undergone hysterectomy only the relative risk (RR) was 0.62 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.56-0.69) and for women who had undergone hysterectomy-BO the RR was 0.70 (95% CI 0.60-0.82). Although oxygen uptake (VO 2) during exercise stress is a surrogate marker for prognosis in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), the stress test is sometimes difficult to perform owing to patient conditions, such as ageing or comorbidities. We investigated the relationships between VO 2 during usual gait with physical function and prognosis in patients with CVD. This single-centre observational study enrolled consecutive patients who were hospitalized for CVD treatment. Isometric quadriceps strength (QS) and 6-min walk distance (6MWD) as physical functions, and VO 2 during usual gait speed were measured at hospital discharge. We assessed the changes in VO 2 per body weight between at rest and during gait divided by gait speed (VO 2 /kg/gait) and analysed the relationships of VO 2 /kg/gait with physical functions and composite incidences of all-cause death or unplanned readmission after discharge. In 367 patients (age, 65 ± 13 years; females, 34%), 112 clinical events occurred. VO 2 /kg/gait showed significant negative correlations to QS (β = −0.114, p = 0.024) and 6MWD (β = −0.163, p < 0.001) after adjusting for confounding factors. High VO 2 /kg/gait was significantly associated with a high rate of clinical events (hazard ratio for 1 standard deviation of VO 2 /kg/gait, 1.36; 95% confidence interval, 1.11–1.66). This association was also observed in subgroups of older age and frailty. High VO 2 during usual gait was a relevant factor for low physical function and poor prognosis in patients with CVD and even in older age and frailty, meaning that VO 2 during usual gait might be a novel and useful marker in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the respiratory and physical function of patients who retested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA during post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rehabilitation. A total of 302 discharged COVID-19 patients were included. Discharged patients were followed up for 14 days to 6 months. The modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale, Borg rating of perceived exertion, and manual muscle testing (MMT) scores on day 14 and at 6 months after discharge were compared between the redetectable positive (RP) and non-RP (NRP) groups. Prognoses of respiratory and physical function were compared between patients who recovered from moderate and severe COVID-19. Of the study patients, 7.6% were RP. The proportion of patients who used antiviral drugs was significantly lower in the RP group than in the NRP group. There were no differences in mMRC, Borg, or MMT scores within the RP and NRP groups. The mMRC, Borg, and MMT scores were worse for patients with severe disease when compared to those with moderate disease at both follow-up time points. COVID-19 patients who did not take antiviral drugs were more likely to be RP after discharge. Background: Nitrate supplements can improve vascular and muscle function. Whether higher habitual dietary nitrate is associated with better muscle function remains underexplored.Objective: The aim was to examine whether habitual dietary nitrate intake is associated with better muscle function in a prospective cohort of men and women, and whether the relation was dependent on levels of physical activity.Methods: The sample (n = 3759) was drawn from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity, and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) (56% female; mean ± SD baseline age: 48.6 ± 11.1 y). Habitual dietary intake was assessed over 12 y by obtaining an average [of at least 2 time points, e.g., baseline (2000/2001) and 2004/2005 and/or 2011/2012] from a food-frequency questionnaire. Nitrate intake was calculated from a validated nitrate database and other published literature. Muscle function was quantified by knee extension strength (KES) and the 8-ft-timed-up-and-go (8ft-TUG) test performed in 2011/2012. Physical activity was assessed by questionnaire. Generalized linear models and logistic regression were used to analyze the data.Results: Median (IQR) total nitrate intake was 65 (52-83) mg/d, with ∼81% derived from vegetables. Individuals in the highest tertile of nitrate intake (median intake: 91 mg/d) had 2.6 kg stronger KES (11%) and 0.24 s faster 8ft-TUG (4%) compared with individuals in the lowest tertile of nitrate intake (median intake: 47 mg/d; both P < 0.05). Similarly, individuals in the highest tertile of nitrate intake had lower odds for weak KES (adjusted OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.47, 0.73) and slow 8ft-TUG (adjusted OR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.50, 0.78) compared with those in the lowest tertile. Background: The ability to preoperatively predict which patients will achieve a minimal clinically important difference (MCID) after lumbar spine decompression surgery can help determine the appropriateness and timing of surgery. Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) scores are an increasingly popular outcome instrument.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop algorithms predictive of achieving MCID after primary lumbar decompression surgery.Patient Sample: This was a retrospective study at two academic medical centers and three community medical centers including adult patients 18 years or older undergoing one or two level posterior decompression for lumbar disc herniation or lumbar spinal stenosis between January 1, 2016 and April 1, 2019.Outcome Measures: The primary outcome, MCID, was defined using distribution-based methods as one half the standard deviation of postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROMIS physical function, pain interference, pain intensity).Methods: Five machine learning algorithms were developed to predict MCID on these surveys and assessed by discrimination, calibration, Brier score, and decision curve analysis. The final model was incorporated into an open access digital application.Results: Overall, 906 patients completed at least one PROMs survey in the 90 days before surgery and at least one PROMs survey in the year after surgery. Attainment of MCID during the study period by PROMIS instrument was 74.3% for physical function, 75.8% for pain interference, and 79.2% for pain intensity. Factors identified for preoperative prediction of MCID attainment on these outcomes included preoperative PROs, percent unemployment in neighborhood of residence, comorbidities, body mass index, private insurance, preoperative opioid use, surgery for disc herniation, and federal poverty level in neighborhood of residence. The discrimination (c-statistic) of the final algorithms for these outcomes was 0.79 for physical function, 0.74 for pain interference, and 0.69 for pain intensity with good calibration. Context: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with recurrent pain that could lead to abnormal sensory patterns (ASPs).Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare children with SCD who had normal sensory patterns (NSPs) and ASPs in pain experience, physical function, pain coping, and pain catastrophizing.Methods: Children with quantitative sensory testing data were selected from a larger study that examined pain and symptoms in children with SCD. Comparisons were made between children with NSP (n = 35; 13.9 ± 1.9 years) and ASP (n = 13; 12.8 ± 1.9 years). Children completed the Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool, Functional Disability Inventory, Pain Coping Questionnaire, and Pain Catastrophizing Scale.Results: No significant differences were found in pain intensity (2.9 ± 3.0 vs. 2.6 ± 2.8 on 0-10 Visual Analogue Scale) between the NSP and ASP, respectively. The most common marked pain sites for both groups were lower extremities (22.9%), head and neck (20.8%), and upper extremities (20.8%). Functional Disability Inventory scores were significantly worse in ASP (38.5%) compared with NSP (11.4%). The ASP group had significantly worse scores in emotion-focused pain coping subscales.Conclusion: Children with SCD with ASP had worse functional disability, were expressing more affective pain quality, and had emotion-focused pain coping compared with NSP. Future studies are needed to examine the effectiveness of physical activities on the physical function as well as psychosocial interventions such as peer support and creative arts expression to minimize development of ASP in children with SCD. Objectives: The relationship between components of body composition and physical function is not well characterized among middle-aged women. This cross-sectional study examined the strength of the associations between lean mass and percent fat and physical function in middle-aged women.Study Design: Body composition, physical function and physical activity were objectively measured in 80 women (mean age 52.58 ± 6.10 years; range = 40-63 years).Main Outcome Measures: Adiposity (%Fat) and lean mass were measured via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Steps/day and minutes of low-, moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity were assessed via accelerometer. Physical function was measured via a seated transfer task, 30-second chair stand, a six-minute walk task, 8-foot timed up and go, and a lift and carry task.Results: When controlling for steps/day, measures of lean mass were related to performance on the seated transfer task (r = .25) and 30-second chair stand (-.26) (both p > 0.05), while %Fat was related to performance on the seated transfer task (r = .53), 8-foot timed up and go (r = .32), 30-second chair stand (r = -.35), and six-minute walk (r = -.48; all p ≤ 0.05). Linear regression analyses revealed: (1) age, steps/day, and %Fat were independently related to performance on the seated transfer task and 30-second chair stand (both p ≤ 0.05), (2) %Fat was associated with six-minute walk and 8-foot up-and-go performance (p ≤ 0.01); none of the variables included were associated with lift and carry.Conclusions: Adiposity but not lean mass was associated with objectively measured physical function in middle-aged women. Individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) can develop a range of motor and non-motor symptoms due to its progressive nature and lack of effective treatments. Exercise interventions, such as multimodal (MM) programmes, may improve and sustain physical or cognitive function in PD. However, studies usually evaluate physical performance, cognition, and neuroprotective biomarkers separately and over short observation periods. Part one evaluates the effects of a weekly community-based MM exercise class (60 min) on physical function in people with PD (PwP). Exercise participants (MM-EX; age 65 ± 9 years; Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scale ≤ IV) completed a battery of functional assessments every 4 months for one (n = 27), two (n = 20) and three years (n = 15). In part two, cognition and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were assessed over 6-to-8 months and compared to aged-matched non-active PwP (na-PD, n = 16; age 68 ± 7 years; H&Y scale ≤ III) and healthy older adults (HOA, n = 18; age 61 ± 6 years). MM-EX significantly improved walking capacity (5% improvement after 8 months), functional mobility (11% after 4 months), lower extremity strength (15% after 4 months) and bilateral grip strength (9% after 28 months), overall, maintaining physical function across 3 years. Group comparisons showed that only MM-EX significantly improved their mobility, lower extremity strength, cognition and BDNF levels. To assess the reliability and validity of age-specific versions of the Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Physical Function Questionnaire (FOP-PFQ), developed to measure the impact of FOP on physical function and activities of daily living. FOP-PFQ development included a literature review, two iterative phases of qualitative work involving individuals with FOP, and clinical expert review. The analysis used pooled FOP-PFQ data from an FOP natural history study (NCT02322255), a patient registry (NCT02745158), and phase II trials (NCT02190747 ; NCT02279095 ; NCT02979769). Item-level and factor analysis informed item retention and determined factor structure. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients. Convergent validity was assessed by comparing scores with age, the Cumulative Analogue Joint Involvement Scale (CAJIS), the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health Scale (PROMIS), and heterotopic ossification (HO) volume. Known-groups validity assessment used age, CAJIS, and HO volume. Factor analysis confirmed a two-factor solution: Mobility and Upper Extremity. Results reflected high internal consistency and were supportive of test-retest reliability; correlation coefficients >0.90 demonstrated FOP-PFQ scores were stable over a one- to three-week period. The majority of scores were moderately (r = 0.30–0.50) to highly (r ≥ 0.50) correlated with CAJIS and HO volume, supporting convergent validity. With the exception of some age-based and functional groups, FOP-PFQ scores were significantly worse in groups with more severe disease, demonstrating known-groups validity. • Intensive exercise in the early postoperative rehabilitation after hip fracture (up to 3 months postoperatively) is beneficial to the recovery of physical function in older adults. • Intensive exercise with more load lead to greater improvements in muscle strength, balance, and functional ability. • Older adults with cognitive impairment were not included in the studies selected for this review, conclusions about the training results may not be extended to this population. Individuals commonly experience age-related systemic decreases in skeletal muscle strength, physical function, and mobility, leading to falls and potential associated hip fractures. To evaluate whether intensive exercise can improve physical function, mobility, and independence in activities of daily living (ADL) and shorten the length of hospital stay in older adults after hip fracture surgery. This systematic review was conducted under the PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed on January 5, 2022 in eight databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The participants included older adults with hip fracture, and the intervention studied was intensive exercise. The outcomes were physical function, mobility, ADLs, and the length of hospital stay. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.3. Fifteen studies were included in this review. After hip fracture surgery, intensive exercise improved participants' physical function to a greater extent than regular or no exercise (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.25, 1.23). Intensive exercise was particularly more effective for gait speed (SMD = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.30), the timed up-and-go test results (mean difference [MD] = -4.34, 95%CI: -6.74, -1.94), balance (SMD =0.42, 95% CI: 0.38, 0.89), and ADLs (SMD = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.87). The quality of the evidence was low due to risk of bias, inconsistency, and imprecision. Recent studies suggest that patients with lower extremity osteoarthritis may have altered spinal posture. We aimed to investigate age and body mass index-adjusted sagittal spinal alignment and mobility and their relation to physical function in women over 40 years of age with and without mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Thirty-two women with unilateral mild-to-moderate KOA and thirty-two asymptomatic women were included. A skin-surface device was used to assess sagittal alignment and mobility of the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral regions and trunk inclination angle. Physical function was assessed using the Timed Up and Go test. Analysis of covariance was used to compare groups and correlation coefficients were calculated separately for two groups. Women with KOA had higher thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis compared to asymptomatic women (p < 0.05). The mean differences were 6.60 (%95 Confidence Interval 1.38;11.82) and −5.63 (−10.06;−1.20) for thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis, respectively. Physical function score was moderately correlated with trunk inclination angle and lumbar, sacral, and trunk inclination mobility in asymptomatic women (r = 0.400, −0.504, −0.602, and −0.681, p < 0.05), but a significant correlation was not found in women with KOA (p > 0.05). In conclusion, women with KOA had altered spinal alignment. Spinal alignment and mobility were related to physical function in asymptomatic women over 40 years of age. The aim is to inspect the effects of exercise and nutritional intervention on prefrail older adults' physical function. Systematic review and meta-analysis registered with PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021261197). Randomized controlled trials involving prefrail older adults who received exercise and/or nutritional interventions. Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, Clinical Trials, and PubMed were searched from inception to September 1, 2021. Primary outcomes were physical function, including physical performance, mobility, and grip strength. The short physical performance battery score and chair sit-to-stand test were used to assess the physical performance. Timed up and go and gait speed were applied to assess the mobility. Secondary outcomes were frailty status, weight, body mass index, Barthel index, and quality of life (Euro quality of life 5 dimension index values). We included 16 randomized controlled trials comprising 1199 prefrail older adults (intervention group, n = 593; control group, n = 606). Exercise and nutritional interventions significantly improved the short physical performance battery score [n = 5, mean difference 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21‒1.42, I2 = 62%], handgrip strength (n = 7, mean difference 1.52, 95% CI 0.70‒2.34, I2 = 6%), and gait speed (n = 4, standard weighted mean difference −1.06, 95% CI -1.87 to −0.25, I2 = 89%). There were no significant differences among the chair sit-to-stand test, timed up and go, weight, body mass index, and Barthel index. The objective of the present systematic review was to investigate the effects of organizational capacity building interventions on the environment, nursing staff capacity, and mobility of residents in nursing facilities. Systematic review. Nursing facilities, staff, and residents. We conducted a systematic review according to the methods of the Cochrane Collaboration. The systematic review was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database of systematic reviews (registration number CRD42020202996). We searched for studies in MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCO), the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), and the Cochrane Library (07/20). A narrative synthesis was conducted because of the high heterogeneity of the included studies. We identified 6747 records and included 14 studies in our review. We clustered the 14 interventions into 3 different categories (environmental modification, nursing staff capacity, and multifactorial interventions). Three studies assessed outcomes at the nursing staff level, and all studies reported outcomes at the resident level. We found highly heterogeneous and inconsistent effects of organizational capacity building on increasing nursing staff capacity and/or resident mobility. The findings emphasize the need for further research focusing on an international understanding and definition of organizational capacity building. Additionally, research and intervention development for organizational capacity building interventions to promote resident mobility are needed while applying the framework of the Medical Research Council. Furthermore, studies should assess outcomes regarding the environment and nursing staff to better understand if and how environmental structures and nursing staff capacity effect resident mobility. The present study investigated the association between adherence to Mediterranean diet (MeDi) and physical performance and cognitive function in older adults. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that investigated older adults aged 60+ years and assessed adherence to MeDi diet using validated composite scores. Observational studies, including cross-sectional, case-control, and longitudinal cohort studies, if crude baseline data was available, which investigated as a primary or secondary outcome the association of MeDi diet adherence with physical performance and/or cognitive function in non-demented older adults were included in the cross-sectional analysis. For the longitudinal analysis, case-control and longitudinal cohort studies that investigated the longitudinal associations between adherence to MeDi diet with the incidence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, and/or Alzheimer's disease (AD), and/or changes in physical performance and cognition in non-demented older adults were included. Studies published in other languages than English were excluded. Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and AgeLine databases until May 19, 2021. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Newcastle - Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). A pooled effect size was calculated based on standard mean differences (SMD), log odds ratio (OR) and log risk ratio (RR). This study is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021250254). Nineteen cross-sectional studies that investigated 19.734 community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults free of disability and dementia were included. A high adherence to MeDi was cross-sectionally associated with better walking speed (SMD = 0.42; 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) = 0.12–0.72, P = 0.006; I² = 65 %, P = 0.06), knee muscle strength speed (SMD = 0.26; 95 % CI = 0.17–0.36, P < 0.00001; I² = 0 %, P = 0.69), global cognition (SMD = 0.24; 95 % CI = 0.15–0.33, P < 0.00001; I² = 85 %, P < 0.00001), and memory (SMD = 0.18; 95 % CI = 0.13–0.25, P < 0.00001; I² = 100 %, P < 0.00001). The association between MeDi adherence and global cognition remained significant after stratifying the analysis by the region where the study was conducted, MeDi diet adherence composite score, and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Studies had a moderate to low risk of bias. In relation to longitudinal analysis, thirty-four prospective studies with an average follow-up period that varied from 3.0 to 12.6 years and investigated 98.315 community-dwellers were included. Results indicated that older adults with high MeDi scores had a lower decline in global cognition RR = 0.26; 95 % CI = 0.23–0.29, P < 0.00001; I² = 100 %, P < 0.00001). In contrast, no significant associations between MeDi and mobility, MCI, dementia were found. A low risk of bias was found in the longitudinal studies. Findings of the present study indicated that high adherence to MeDi was cross-sectionally associated with physical performance and cognitive function. Results of the pooled analysis of longitudinal studies revealed that high adherence to MeDi reduced the risk of global cognitive decline in non-demented older adults. However, no significant associations between MeDi adherence and the incidence of mobility problems, MCI, and dementia were found. Identification of the age trajectory of disability development across populations enables preparation for aging-related policies when conducting cross-national comparisons. This study compared three indicators of the development of physical disability in populations of Taiwan and Japan. Data comprised two nationally representative panel surveys (1) the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (N = 3,037) in 1996–2011 and (2) the National Survey of the Japanese Elderly in 1996–2012 (N = 1,974). Older adults (65+) were examined longitudinally. Activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and mobility disability development during aging were analyzed using multilevel models. After age standardization, Japan reported higher prevalence rate of ADL disability (14.95% vs. 9.65%) but lower IADL (19.30% vs. 30.36%) and mobility disability (36.07% vs. 49.82%) as compared with Taiwan. ADL limitation occur (ADL limitation>=1) at the age of 77.9 and 77.2 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Populations reached three ADL limitations at the age of 86.7 and 85.0 in Japan and in Taiwan, respectively. IADL limitation occur (IADL limitation>=1) at the age of 79.1 and 74.5 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Mobility limitation occur (Mobility limitation>=1) at the age of 70.7 and 65.3 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Linking geospatial neighbourhood design characteristics to health and behavioural data from population-representative cohorts is limited by data availability and difficulty collecting information on environmental characteristics (e.g. greenery, building setbacks, dwelling structure). As an alternative, this study examined the feasibility of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) - machine learning - to measure neighbourhood design using 'street view' and aerial imagery to explore the relationship between the built environment and physical function. This study included 3102 adults aged 45 years and older clustered in 200 neighbourhoods in 2016 from the How Areas in Brisbane Influence Health and Activity (HABITAT) project in Brisbane, Australia. Exposure data were Google Street View and Google Maps images from within the 200 neighbourhoods, and outcome data were self-reported physical function using the PF-10 (a subset of the SF-36). Physical function scores were aggregated to the neighbourhood level, and the highest and lowest 20 neighbourhoods respectively were used in analysis. We found that the aerial imagery retrieved was unable to be used to adequately train the model, meaning that aerial imagery failed to produce meaningful results. Of the street view images, n = 56,330 images were downloaded and used to train the GAN model. Model outputs included augmented street view images between neighbourhoods classed as having high function and low function residents. The GAN model detected differences in neighbourhood design characteristics between neighbourhoods classed as high and low physical function at the aggregate level. Specifically, differences were identified in urban greenery (including tree heights) and dwelling structure (e.g. building height). This study provides important lessons for future work in this field, especially related to the uniqueness, diversity and amount of imagery required for successful applications of deep learning methods. To investigate the efficacy of a community group-based intervention among community-dwelling older adults with physio-cognitive decline syndrome (PCDS). A prospective cluster randomized controlled trial included 733 community-dwelling older adults with adjusted Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA adj) scores >18 from 40 community-based sites across Taiwan. PCDS was defined as the concomitant presence of physical declines, i.e., slowness and/or weakness plus dysfunction in any cognitive domain. The multidomain intervention integrated physical exercise, cognitive training, nutritional advices and health education lessons. Conventional health education in control group entailed periodic telephone calls to offer participants health education and advice. The primary outcome was the mean differences of MoCA adj total scores and all domains of MoCA adj between baseline and 6- and 12-month follow-up in each group of PCDS, cognitive dysfunction, mobility-type frailty and normal functioning, and the secondary outcomes included the changes of frailty score, handgrip strength, gait speed and physical activity. Intervention effects were analysed using a generalized linear mixed model. Overall, 18.9% of the study sample had PCDS. Multidomain intervention for 12 months significantly improved cognitive performance in people with PCDS, and those with cognitive dysfunction only. An early benefit on visuo-spatial executive function was seen in older adults with mobility-type frailty. Intervention also improved frailty scores among participants with mobility-type frailty, handgrip strength for participants with PCDS, and gait speed in the normal group. The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the conduct of clinical trials. For studies with physical function and physical activity outcomes that require in-person participation, thoughtful approaches in transitioning to the remote research environment are critical. Here, we share our experiences in transitioning from in-person to remote assessments of physical function and activity during the pandemic and highlight key considerations for success. Details on the development of the remote assessment protocol, integration of a two-way video platform, and implementation of remote assessments are addressed. In particular, procedural challenges and considerations in transitioning and conducting remote assessments will be discussed in terms of efforts to maintain participant safety, maximize study efficiency, and sustain trial integrity. Plans for triangulation and analysis are also discussed. Although the role of telehealth platforms and research activities in remote settings are still growing, our experiences suggest that adopting remote assessment strategies are useful and convenient in assessing study outcomes during, and possibly even beyond, the current pandemic. Purpose: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) survivors frequently experience bodily pain during recovery after the intensive care unit. Longitudinal course, risk factors and associations with physical and neuropsychological health is lacking.Methods: We collected self-reported pain using the Short Form-36 Bodily Pain (SF-36 BP) scale, normalized for sex and age (range: 0-100; higher score = less pain), along with physical and mental health measures in a multi-center, prospective cohort of 826 ARDS survivors at 6- and 12-month follow-up. We examined baseline and ICU variables' associations with pain via separate unadjusted regression models.Results: Pain prevalence (SF-36 BP ≤40) was 45% and 42% at 6 and 12 months, respectively. Among 706 patients with both 6- and 12-month data, 34% reported pain at both timepoints. Pre-ARDS employment was associated with less pain at 6-months (mean difference (standard error), 5.7 (0.9), p < 0.001) and 12-months (6.3 (0.9), p < 0.001); smoking history was associated with greater pain (-5.0 (0.9), p < 0.001, and - 5.4 (1.0), p < 0.001, respectively). In-ICU opioid use was associated with greater pain (-6.3 (2.7), p = 0.02, and - 7.3 (2.8), p = 0.01, respectively). At 6 months, 174 (22%) patients reported co-occurring pain, depression and anxiety, and 227 (33%) reported co-occurring pain and impaired physical function.Conclusion: Nearly half of ARDS survivors reported bodily pain at 6- and 12-month follow-up; one-third reported pain at both time points. Pre-ARDS unemployment, smoking history, and in-ICU opioid use may identify patients who report greater pain during recovery. Thirty-seven studies reported impaired pulmonary function. Incidence of pulmonary dysfunction ranged from 45.5 % to 84.1 %. Eighteen studies reported impaired physical function. Three studies investigated the relationship between pulmonary function and physical function. No studies explored inspiratory muscle strength. Pulmonary function and physical function are related and frequently impaired in children during and after cancer treatment. A literature gap was found in diaphragm function and its relationship with physical function.
