The deployment of hydrogen refueling stations is vital to the development of fuel cell vehicles. Past studies on the hydrogen refueling stations didn't consider congestion on paths and assumed all flows are on the shortest paths of OD pairs, which is not consistent with travelers' route choice behavior. In this paper, we study flow refueling location allocation based on the user-equilibrium (UE) status, which is consistent with travelers' route choice behavior. We present a flow-capturing location allocation (FCLA) model on UE conditions. We also presented an equilibrium algorithm avoiding cannibalization to solve the model. Based on the transportation network of Anaheim city in California in the US, we compared the results of applying a non-equilibrium method to the FCLA model and applying the equilibrium method to the FCLA model on UE conditions. The results of the two algorithms and models are different. The equilibrium model and algorithm can capture more flow and has a higher flow-capturing ratio. What's more, the equilibrium model and algorithm can fully capture the expected flow in practice since the real transportation network is basically in UE status. Future hydrogen demand for the mobility markets will be partially dependent on the evolution of state and national policies and incentives. Hydrogen from natural gas plus carbon capture and sequestration (SMR-CCS) is one pathway for manufacturing hydrogen without significant carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. This paper describes a methodology for assessing hydrogen market demand, CO 2 storage options, community impacts (air quality and community vulnerability/environmental justice concerns), land ownership and technoeconomics for the mobility market in northern California, but has application globally. Our analysis indicates that a single facility with 250 t/day hydrogen generation capacity would provide enough hydrogen to supply the Bay Area and Sacramento regions of California in a mid-case demand scenario. With existing federal and state incentives, we estimate the levelized cost of hydrogen from natural gas plus carbon capture and sequestration to be $0.13 per kg (highly dependent on California Low Carbon Fuel Standard credit assumed to be $100/ton CO 2), which is competitive with grey hydrogen that averages $0.65 /kg in California. In addition, based on subsurface criteria, community impact analysis, and land ownership status, 7 sites in northern California appear to be feasible prospects for a collocated SMR-CCS new build facility. The primary barrier to CCS projects in California continues to be the regulatory framework. Further work with key stakeholders, including state and federal legislators, is needed to enhance the commercial attributes of CCS projects and public acceptance of such projects. Since 2003, the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) has operated the first U.S. publicly accessible hydrogen refueling station (HRS). During this period, the UCI HRS supported all manufacturers in the early, pre-commercialization years of the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). This paper describes and analyzes the performance of the UCI HRS during the first five years of FCEV commercialization, over which time the station has dispensed the most hydrogen daily in the California network. The station performance is compared to aggregate data published by NREL for all U.S. HRSs. Using the Hydrogen Delivery Scenario Analysis Model, typical daily refueling profiles are analyzed to determine the effect on HRS design. The results show different daily refueling profiles could substantially affect HRS design and ultimately the cost of hydrogen. While technical issues have been reduced, the compressor, dispenser, and fueling rate are areas for improvement. Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption is one of the critical solutions to decarbonize the transportation sector. Among the ZEV fleet in the US, battery electric vehicles (BEV) have been leading the market penetration. However, hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) have also been increasingly adopted in recent years. Although both technologies have challenges with infrastructure, unlike BEVs that have multiple venues for charging (home, work or public), FCEVs rely solely on fueling at public hydrogen stations, and their availability is a significant factor before the vehicle purchase. Therefore, for the success of FCEV adoption, a need to monitor and understand the driver satisfaction of these stations is extremely critical. This research project introduces a quantitative-qualitative approach for continuous monitoring of hydrogen stations based on the station utilization patterns and to assess their preferability based on driver experiences. To illustrate a proof-of-concept, we collected the hourly utilization data of all the hydrogen fueling stations in California for three months. The time-series data was used to develop a capacity-independent term called "Normalized Relative Utilization Index" (NRUI) that encapsulates the utilization pattern of each station to a single metric. We spatially regressed this metric over the number of FCEVs present in the neighborhood to deduce the relationship. We designed a survey to obtain the refueling experiences of FCEV drivers, where about 100 participants responded with their station preferences. Their answers were used to validate the quantitative approach and identify a "Satisfactory Utilization Range" (SUR) of stations which are preferred by most drivers. Though this project illustrates the analysis of data collected over a small period, this approach is easily scalable with new station installations and can be implemented as a continuous monitoring system with real-time station utilization data. We believe this demand-focused approach could complement the existing supply-side monitoring methods on station performance to provide a smoother fueling experience to drivers. Many countries and regions of the world are pursuing aggressive decarbonization policies in the transportation sector aiming to sharply reduce the sales of conventional gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), have zero tailpipe emissions, but still can be considerably more expensive than ICEVs, which is one key factor hampering their wide-scale adoption. Still, many decarbonization roadmaps and plans call for a large ramp up of ZEVs in coming years. For example, the International Energy Agency's aggressive 2DS high H 2 scenario estimates 11 M BEVs and 4 M FCEVs sold in 2030 and California has also set aggressive sales targets under its ZEV Mandate. This paper provides a detailed life cycle cost analysis comparison for FCEV versus other vehicle technologies, assuming these international adoption scenarios are implemented using a learning rate approach. Results show that the fuel cell system is the key factor in making FCEV life cycle costs comparable to ICEV costs. With an 18% learning rate, FCEVs are estimated to be cost competitive with ICEVs by 2025, but with an 8% learning rate, this cost-competitive point is pushed out almost 25 years. Abstract: This paper discusses the conceptual design of a scalable and reproducible hydrogen fueling station at Santa Monica, California. Hydrogen production using renewable energy sources such as biogas, which accounts for 100% of the total production, has been discussed. The fueling station consists of a direct fuel cell (DFC) 300 fuel cell for on-site generation of 136kg/day of hydrogen and 300kW of electric power, five hydrogen storage tanks (storage capacity of 198kg of H2 at 350 and 700bar), four compressors which assist in dispensing 400kg of hydrogen in 14h, two hydrogen dispensers operating at 350bar and 700bar independently and a SAE J2600 compliant hydrogen nozzle. Potential early market customers for hydrogen fuel cells and their daily fuel requirements have been computed. The safety codes, potential failure modes and the methods to mitigate risks have been explained. A well-to-wheel analysis is performed to compare the emissions and the total energy requirements of conventional gasoline and fuel cell vehicles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have been proposed as an option for lowering carbon dioxide (CO 2) and pollutants emissions from the transportation sector, when implemented in combination with green hydrogen production methods such as water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. FCEVs also have the added advantages of high specific energy density and rapid refueling, two important challenges that battery electric vehicles have not yet fully overcome. Moreover, flexible operation of electrolysis could support the grid and lower electricity costs. In this paper, we simulate time-varying FCEV hydrogen refueling demand for light, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles met using electrolysis systems distributed throughout the Western U.S. power system. We find that by oversizing electrolyzers the resulting load flexibility results in different hydrogen generation temporal profiles, average electricity costs, renewable curtailment levels, and CO 2 emissions. Our results indicate that increasing hydrogen production flexibility lowers hydrogen and electricity generation cost and CO 2 emissions, but there is a tradeoff between lowering operational cost and increasing electrolyzer capital cost, yielding a minimum total system cost at a size corresponding to between 80% and 90% annual capacity factor assuming a future electrolyzer cost of $300/kW.
