Quantitative predictions of marine and aeolian sediment transport in the nearshore–beach–dune system are important for designing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in coastal environments. To quantify the impact of the marine-aeolian interactions on shaping NBS, we present a framework coupling three existing process-based models: Delft3D Flexible Mesh, SWAN and AeoLiS. This framework facilitates the continuous exchange of bed levels, water levels and wave properties between numerical models focussing on the aeolian and marine domain. The coupled model is used to simulate the morphodynamic evolution of the Sand Engine mega-nourishment. Results display good agreement with the observed aeolian and marine volumetric developments, showing similar marine-driven erosion from the main peninsula and aeolian-driven infilling of the dune lake. To estimate the magnitude of the interactions between aeolian and marine processes, a comparison between the simulated morphological development by the coupled and stand-alone models was made. This comparison shows that aeolian sediment transport to the foredune, i.e. 214,000 m3 over 5 years, extracts sediment from the marine domain. As a result, the alongshore redistribution of sediment from the main peninsula by marine-driven processes decreased by 70,000 m3, representing 1.7% of the total marine-driven dispersion. From the aeolian perspective, marine-driven deposition and erosion reshape the cross-shore profile, controlling the supply-limited aeolian sediment transport and the magnitude of sediment deposition in the foredunes. In the region with persistent accretion along the Sand Engine's southern flank, a higher than average foredune deposition was predicted due to morphological development of the region where sediment is picked up by aeolian transport. Including these marine processes in the coupled model resulted in an increase of 1.3% in foredune growth in year 1 and up to 6.7% in year 5 along this accretive section. At the northern flank, where the developing lagoon and tidal channel provided increased shelter to the supratidal beach, predicted foredune deposition reduced up to −11.5% over the evaluation period. Our findings show that both aeolian and marine transports impact reshaping the nourished sand, where developments in one domain affect the other. Submarine canyons serve as important sediment transport conduits from littoral zones to the deep sea, with strong impacts on the sedimentation patterns in marginal areas of the ocean. Moreover, such canyons can be major geohazards for submarine infrastructure, warranting a good understanding of their past and current behavior. Here, we present a study of the geological history and the recent activity of the Nahariya submarine canyon, the longest of a system of ∼15 small blind canyons located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, offshore Israel. Two piston cores retrieved from the middle and outlet of the canyon, at 650 m and 915 m water depth, respectively, were the focus of a multi-proxy study aiming to characterize sediment transport and deposition along the canyon during the Last Glacial and up to the present. Both cores reveal a sequence of homogenous sediment of late last glacial age, which are capped by an unconformity overlying by fine laminated sediment dated to the last ∼200 years. Thus, the deglacial and most of the Holocene intervals are absent from the record. Evidence for down canyon sediment transport are abundant and include a 70 cm interval of mud clasts with disordered glacial ages that appears immediately below the hiatus, as well as broken calcareous shells of dead benthic foraminiferal species of shallow marine habitats, which are abundant throughout both cores. Similarly, shelf-derived living benthic foraminiferal species were found in the core-tops, indicating that active sediment transport persists along this canyon today. We conclude that the history of Nahariya submarine canyon includes a period of sediment accumulation that lasted until the last deglaciation. Thereafter, the canyon was dominated by an erosive regime that persisted throughout the Holocene. Sediment accumulation resumed ∼200 years ago. We suggest that the recent resumption of sediment-accumulation is a result of anthropogenic amplification of on-land soil erosion accompanied by a wet period that persisted in the region and enhanced land to sea sediment transport. • The geological history of a blind submarine canyon of E. • Contour currents with different physical natures observed over a drift-moat system • High SSC on the drift due to long-range sediment transport by contour currents • High SSC in the moat due to moat wall erosion by tidal-induced secondary flows • Formation of drifts forced by upslope sediment transport of tidal currents Contourite drifts are ubiquitous sedimentary features in the world′s oceans, and their formation are usually ascribed to sedimentation from contour currents. However, in-situ observations of contour currents and their associated sedimentary processes were inadequate. Here, we present mooring observation results from a drift-moat contourite system in the South China Sea to gain insight into its sediment dynamics and formation mechanism. We found that quasi-persistent contour currents develop in the moat, on and below the drift, yet subject to diverse physical oceanographic processes. High suspended sediment concentrations observed on the drift mainly occur in winter, induced by high levels of sediments transported by contour currents from Taiwan. In the moat, however, high suspended sediment concentrations are mostly caused by erosion of the moat wall during periods of strong tidal currents and low shear variance. Such results underscore the complexity of current patterns and sedimentary processes across various topographic units in the drift-moat contourite system. A novel formation mechanism of the contourite drift is thereby proposed, wherein sediment transport by contour currents brings materials for constructing the drift, while its formation is driven by near-critical reflection and upslope transport of sediments by tidal currents. Meretrix meretrix (M. meretrix) are commonly found on tidal flats along the global coastlines. They are believed to potentially affect the sedimentary processes and thus morphological dynamics on the tidal flat. Their effects on sediment erosion and deposition, however, are not well quantitatively understood. To fill this gap, we conducted an integrated synchronous field investigation of hydrodynamic, sediment properties, and macrobenthos at two nearby tidal flats, one with abundant M. meretrix and the other without. In addition, seasonal comparison between summer and winter for the M. meretrix abundant site, where there was much less M. meretrix in winter than in summer, was conducted to further examine the influence of M. meretrix on critical value for the initiation of sediment entrainment. The results show that the critical shear stress for erosion (τ e) in the M. meretrix abundant site was lower than the bare tidal flat by ~23%. Differently, for the critical shear stress for deposition (τ d), the value at the M. meretrix abundant site was greater than that at the bare tidal flat by ~30%. Overall, we concluded that the existence of M. meretrix tends to enhance both the erodibility of the sea bed and the deposition of suspended sediment in the water column. • 24,918 Landsat images focused on the lower Yellow River were used to monitor SSC during the period 1997–2020. • The proposed HGAR method significantly outperforms other retrieval methods in terms of retrieval accuracy. • HGAR is a reliable method for SSC retrieval and can be used for long-term monitoring of SSCs. Monitoring suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) of channel waters is essential for evaluating important issues such as erosion, sediment transport and deposition, reservoir siltation, and water pollution throughout watersheds. Remote sensing technology provides a new approach to large-scale SSC monitoring, but the accuracy of existing retrieval methods based on remote sensing technology still needs to be improved for complex environments. This study proposes a new hyperparameter and globally adaptive retrieval (HGAR) method for river SSC retrieval that combines a remote sensing technique and machine learning methods. The HGAR method uses the light gradient-boosting machine method as the basic model for SSC retrieval, and the tree-structured Parzen estimator method, coefficient of determination, and residual prediction deviation are combined to optimize the basic model's hyperparameters. The experiment was conducted in the lower Yellow River, where 24,918 Landsat images from 1997 to 2020 were acquired using Google Earth Engine, and 1,772 monthly cloud-free images were obtained in the end. The sequential backward floating selection method was adopted to determine the optimal modeling features. Two regression and three machine learning methods were compared with the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed HGAR method significantly outperforms other retrieval methods in terms of retrieval accuracy (as evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.626 and a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient of 0.613), generalizability, and robustness. Finally, the model explanation results show that the HGAR method can successfully capture the key information for SSC retrieval and has higher flexibility than traditional statistical models. In addition, we found that the overall fit and the fit of local extreme values are inconsistent in the lower Yellow River, and the proposed improved accuracy indicator balances the two aspects well. In conclusion, the proposed HGAR method can be used effectively to estimate channel SSC and is expected to provide technical support for long-term and large-scale monitoring of the channel surface SSC. Extreme rainfall is becoming more frequent and intense, which no doubt increases the risks and uncertainty of water erosion in widely-used contour ridge systems. Ridge slope erosion can increase the probability of contour failure occurrence and then induce contour ridge losing anti-erosion properties. However, there is little understanding of ridge slope erosive process controlled by contour ridge system responding to extreme rainfall. In this study, five rare earth elements were applied in different ridge segments and soil layers to monitor the successive development of ridge slope erosion process under extreme rainfall in contour ridge system. Simulated rainfall experiments at high rainfall intensity (100 mm h−1) lasting for 60 min were conducted in runoff plots with ridge tillage practices characterized by microtopography indices and ridge geometry indices. Results showed that three sub-processes were observed for ridge slope erosion, including inter-rill erosion, headward erosion, and rill erosion. Headward erosion mainly resulted from the break-point at ridge surface and sidewall collapse at ridge toe, and the pouring of ponding water in furrow greatly promoted rill development. Erosion rate was the largest during headward erosion process, and rill erosion contributed the most to eroded source. The dominated erosion process was transport-limited during inter-rill erosion process, and detachment-limited during headward and rill erosion processes. Sediment transport and deposition processes as well as their transformation occurred simultaneously after the development of headward erosion. Eroded sediment was mainly from the low part of ridge, which was transported by raindrop-impacted sheet flow or overflow. • A mathematical model considering the operation of 24 mega reservoirs was proposed. • The sedimentation mainly occurs in the mainstream during the flood season. • The cascade reservoirs operation leads to easier and prolonged sedimentation. The intensive construction of large dams in the upper Yangtze River Basin (UYRB) has formed large-scale cascade reservoirs and obviously altered the flow regime and sediment transport of the basin. However, few studies have quantitatively described the cumulative impact of these reservoirs on sediment interception. In this study, a flow and sediment transport model that fully considers the operation processes of 24 mega reservoirs in the UYRB was established, and the spatial and temporal variations in sedimentation from 2011 to 2080 were elucidated, assuming repeated series of daily input flow discharge and sediment concentration during 2011–2020 and monthly water operation levels of 24 reservoirs during 2018–2021 as boundary conditions. The results showed an annual average sedimentation of more than 300 Mt in the UYRB during 2011–2060, which falls to 270 Mt in the period 2061–2080, and more than 80% of the sedimentation occurs in the flood season. Nearly 80% of the total sedimentation during 2010–2080 was observed in the mainstream reservoirs, especially the four mega reservoirs in the lower Jinsha River and the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), which accounted for 31.9% and 22.7% of the total sedimentation, respectively. The proportion of sedimentation in mainstream reservoirs will further increase with increasing operation periods. Most reservoirs in the UYRB will not reach sedimentation equilibrium by 2080, except for reservoirs in the Min River Basin. The ratio of siltation capacity to average annual sediment yield determines the percentage of residual siltation capacity of each reservoir. The operation of the cascade reservoirs in 2013–2020 had no more immediate impact on the middle and lower Yangtze River than that in 2003–2012, when the TGR started impoundment. However, the joint operation of these cascade reservoirs has changed the spatial distribution of sedimentation in the UYRB, and will lead to prolonged impacts on downstream channel erosion. • High-turbidity events are triggered by wind waves with wind speeds of > 7 m s−1. • Sediment erosion and deposition are synchronous during HTEs. • Synchronism causes a near-lakebed turbid water layer and sustains the lutocline. High-turbidity events (HTEs) frequently occur in shallow lakes and can deeply influence lake ecosystems. However, the processes of sediment erosion and deposition are not fully understood. To investigate these processes, two investigative campaigns that integrate bed sediment measurements, sediment settling experiments, in-situ observations, or a hydrodynamics-sediment model were conducted to quantitatively study wind-induced HTEs in Lake Taihu, China. Cohesive sediments were massively entrained from the lakebed by wind waves when the wind speed exceeded its critical value of 7 m s−1, as estimated by water depth, triggering HTEs with turbidity waves of > 100 nephelometric turbidity units. The suspended sediment concentration was the net sediment flux of erosion (average: 5.9 mg m−2 s−1) and deposition (average: 5.5 mg m−2 s−1), which occurred synchronously for most of the HTEs and resulted in high temporal variation in suspended sediment concentration. This synchronism was determined by the critical erosional stress of lakebed sediments, which was spatially heterogeneous (0.017–0.055 N m−2) in a large lake. Equations for erosion and deposition processes were derived following the investigative campaigns and used to develop a cohesive sediment transport model for simulating HTEs in Lake Taihu. Simulations indicate that the synchronism of sediment erosion and deposition led to a near-lakebed turbid water layer during an HTE, which sustained the sediment lutocline in Lake Taihu. Rainfall erosion has been calculated and predicted by various soil loss equations, but the progressions of overland flow and sediment transport are less dynamically described. In this study, cellular automata (CA) models based on single flow direction algorithm (SFD), average value multi-flow direction algorithm (AMFD) and remaining average value multi-flow direction algorithm (RAMFD) were constructed. Simultaneously, erosion model was constructed by dividing soil erosion into inter-rill, rill and gully erosions according to critical water depth. The CA models were validated at three scales: a theoretical slope, an in-situ model slope and the natural basin. The results demonstrated the efficient performance of RAMFD in the runoff ascension and recession stages while SFD and AMFD presented unconcentrated runoff distribution, especially in the in-situ slope and basin simulation. Besides, RAMFD model occurred sediment deposition in the basin upstream while SFD and AMFD presented continuous erosion. Furthermore, the runoff Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of three models were 0.85 ∼ 0.95 and 0.65 ∼ 0.94, and the erosion root mean square error (RMSE) were 0.5 ∼ 1.0 kg/min and 0.3 ∼ 0.45 102kg/min in the theoretical slope and natural basin, respectively. Meanwhile, the NSE and RMSE values of RAMFD exhibited the best performance, indicating that this model effectively balanced water distribution while controlling the flow direction to a greater extent. Overall, it is justified to develop an erosion prediction model based on the classification of erosion types, and the rules governing water flow allocation will inevitably result in qualitative and quantitative differences of runoff and erosion. Training walls to improve navigability at river mouths alter natural sediment transport regimes, occasioning morphological changes in the nearby littoral zone. In addition, harbor channels and shorelines are susceptible to on-going changes in global circulation conditions and large-scale engineering interventions. Here we present a process-based modeling approach to determine the relationship between spatial patterns of erosion and deposition, seasonal river discharge, and the geometry of coastal defenses. The study uses the Magdalena River delta as an example, where the redistribution of freshwater and sediments after the construction of the "Tajamar" training wall heralded significant morphological changes in the area. The numerical experiments are used to describe how the erosion and deposition patterns within the estuary and delta of the Magdalena River are linked to the seasonal cycle of the Magdalena River and to the geometry of the hard structures. We demonstrate that the construction of the Tajamar and complementary hard structures would have decreased depositional fluxes in the littoral zone, leading to the observed shoreline retreat and disappearance of an extensive coastal lagoon system. It is shown that an aperture in the training walls may help restore the wetlands without compromising navigability. The effects of climate change on sediment yield and transport dynamics in cold climate regions are not well understood or reported. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been built-up, calibrated, and validated against streamflow and sediment load at several monitoring stations in a cold climate region watershed - the Athabasca River Basin (ARB) in Alberta, Canada. The model was then fed with bias-corrected spatial disaggregated high-resolution (~ 10 km) future climate data from three climate models for two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5), and two periods (mid- and end-century). Results show that channel erosion and deposition are the dominant processes over hill slope erosion in the basin. On average, a predicted warmer and wetter future climate has both synergetic and offsetting effects on sediment yield. Changes are sub-region specific and land-use type dependent, thus reflecting a marked spatial and temporal heterogeneity within the basin. Increases on sediment yield in future periods in the agricultural areas are up to 0.94 t/ha/yr, and are greater than reported soil formation rates in the region. Similarly, while substantial increases (by more than two fold) in the sediment load transport through the river reaches were obtained, the changes show both temporal and spatial variability, and are closely aligned with the trend of stream flows. We believe that availability of such models and knowledge of the effect of future climatic conditions would help water managers formulate appropriate scenarios to manage such basins in a holistic way. However, significant uncertainties in future sediment yield and transport, as a result of variations in climatic forcing of different climate models, need to be considered in any adaptation measures. Reservoirs behind dams act as deposition sites for much of the sediment being transported by rivers. As a result, the downstream river flow can be well below the transport capacity for bed-material. This promotes bed erosion and other geomorphic changes over some length of river located immediately downstream from a dam. These adjustments have been characterized for the Trinity River, TX, downstream of Livingston Dam. Field measurements and results from a 1D numerical model define a 50–60 river kilometer segment of river undergoing bed erosion as the transport capacity for bed material is reestablished. Consequences of this erosion include lowering of the channel bed, reduction in the sediment volume of channel bars, coarsening of sediment on bar tops, steepening of channel banks, and reduction in lateral migration rates of river bends. Repeat surveys of the river long profile reveals that 40 yr of dam closure has produced up to seven meters of channel-bottom incision downstream of the dam, transforming an initially linear profile into a convex-up long profile. The model output matches this observed change, providing confidence that calculated estimates for spatial and temporal changes in bed-material sediment flux can be used to explore the long-term signature of dam influence on the geomorphology of a sand-bed channel. Measurements of channel geometry, profile, lateral migration, and grain size of the lower Trinity River with distance downstream define both the trend and expected variability about the trend associated with the disruption to the bed-material load. This study is the first to simultaneously compare flow and sediment transport through a blowout and over an adjacent foredune, and the first study of flow within a highly sinuous, slot and cauldron blowout. Flow across the foredune transect is similar to that observed in other studies and is primarily modulated by across-dune vegetation density differences. Flow within the blowout is highly complex and exhibits pronounced accelerations and jet flow. It is characterised by marked helicoidal coherent vortices in the mid-regions, and topographically vertically forced flow out of the cauldron portion of the blowout. Instantaneous sediment transport within the blowout is significant compared to transport onto and/or over the adjacent foredune stoss slope and ridge, with the blowout providing a conduit for suspended sediment to reach the downwind foredune upper stoss slope and crest. Medium term (4 months) aeolian sedimentation data indicates sand is accumulating in the blowout entrance while erosion is taking place throughout the majority of the slot, and deposition is occurring downwind of the cauldron on the foredune ridge. The adjacent lower stoss slope of the foredune is accreting while the upper stoss slope is slightly erosional. Longer term (16 months) pot trap data shows that the majority of foredune upper stoss slope and crest accretion occurs via suspended sediment delivery from the blowout, whereas the majority of the suspended sediment arriving to the well-vegetated foredune stoss slope is deposited on the mid-stoss slope. The results of this study indicate one mechanism of how marked alongshore foredune morphological variability evolves due to the role of blowouts in topographically accelerating flow, and delivering significant aeolian sediment downwind to relatively discrete sections of the foredune. The Sediment Transport and Erosion Prediction (STEP) model is methodically described in this paper. The STEP model was implemented at a 3.47 km × 3.47 km grid resolution in the Kalisapi sub-watershed, Central Java, Indonesia. It was calibrated and validated in the period of 2003–2008 and 2010–2014 respectively. The result shows that the STEP model functions satisfactorily at monthly and annual time window in the calibration and validation periods. In both periods, the STEP model is able to produce fruitful annual sediment transport rates with R2 values of 0.71 and 0.9 in the calibration and validation period respectively. Moreover, the STEP model exhibits more equitable spatial variability than that of the widely known USLE model. Correspondingly, it can be surmised that the STEP model is capable of simulating spatial and temporal variability of sediment transport from a watershed at monthly and annual time scales. • STEP model is developed to simulate soil erosion, deposition and sediment transport processes in time and space. • STEP model has been successfully implemented, calibrated and validated in the Kalisapi sub-watershed, Indonesia. • Calibrating STEP model to fit the observation is straightforward as it only needs to modify two model parameters. • STEP model source code and input data for the study area are freely available in the Bitbucket repository service. To corroborate this assumption, real data on rill erosion and sediment transport from the Mogi Guaçu River Basin in southeastern Brazil were used to validate SWAT estimates. The study shows that the model is able to identify soil-eroded areas and replicate the scale and variation patterns of sediment production, although not with great precision. Hence, it can successfully be used for prioritizing areas that require action and for evaluating alternative soil management and conservation practices to mitigate erosive processes. The Paraná River is one of the world's largest fluvial systems due to its discharge. During the last 30 years, water discharge has averaged 18,389 m3 s−1 downstream of the Paraguay-Paraná confluence, where its most important tributaries, the Paraguay and the upper Paraná rivers contribute 22% and 78% of its total discharge, respectively. However, the sedimentological dynamics of this system behaves peculiarly due to the influence of the Bermejo River, a tributary of the Paraguay River. Even though the contribution of the Bermejo River discharge represents only 2% of the Paraná River discharge, its input of suspended sediments is significant due to the erosive processes in the upper Bermejo basin. Most earlier studies have primarily focused on the contributions and dynamics of the wash load (silt and clay) from the Bermejo River through the Paraguay River to the Paraná River, and neglected the relevance of fine and very fine sands (coarser than 63 μm). These sediment fractions play a key role in bed sediment composition, roughness, and bed forms, ultimately modifying the flow resistance and the morphodynamic processes, among other environmental and biological parameters. This study seeks to quantify the suspended sediment contribution of the main tributaries of the middle Paraná River during the last three decades. In particular, water discharge, sediment transport and grain size data measured at gage stations located at the Paraguay River upper reach, the Bermejo River, and the upper and middle reaches of the Paraná River are analyzed. Focus is placed on the coarse suspended sediment fraction. Additionally, the authors collected sediment samples at different river cross-sections and water discharges. The temporal analysis revealed the dynamic behavior of the sediments along the system. The results show different behaviors of the wash load and suspended sand transport provided by the Bermejo River. Along the middle Paraná reach, results suggest a significant suspended coarse fraction deposition during the highest sediment input period. Bed sediments, in turn, are re-suspended during the months with low contributions from the Bermejo and/or during the high water levels stages of the Paraná. Global deltas are facing severe challenges under the impacts of riverine sediment decline and large estuarine projects. Comparing with abundant research on the Yangtze subaqueous delta, the shoals in shallow waters are poorly understood. The Hengsha Shoal, Yangtze Delta, China, expands during the past ∼65 years, with only slight changes during the pre-projects period and remarkable variations in the projects period. It's now half-surrounded by the Hengsha Reclamation Project and the Deep Waterway Project, both facilitating the recent expansion. The current vertical net rate of change in the study area is −2.2 cm/yr, suggesting an overall balance between sediment deposition and erosion. Spatially, the Hengsha Shoal is currently changing from horizontal expansion to vertical accretion. Considering the spatial patterns of erosion/deposition and residual currents and sediment, modern geomorphic changes in the Hengsha Shoal appear to be dominated by internal sediment transport from deep to shallow waters. Considering further possible changing conditions, the future evolution of this shoal and the resulting potential ecological impacts should be studied further. This paper concerns numerical modelling of the impact on the littoral drift and the shoreline from groynes forming a field of equidistant and identical groynes. The most important effect of a groyne on the shoreline morphology is that the littoral drift is blocked completely or partially. A local reduction in the littoral drift around the groyne introduces alongshore gradients in the alongshore sediment transport and sedimentation and erosion around the groyne which will cause re-orientation of the bed contours towards the prevailing wave direction until an equilibrium is reached. A discussion of this mechanism is presented including effects of scales, e.g. the effect of the relative length of the groynes (compared to the width of the surf zone). The model results indicate a strong dependency of the reduction in littoral drift on the initial geometric bypass ratio (Q geo *), which is defined from the groyne length and the littoral transport on the undisturbed coastline; Q geo * is the transport occurring outside the tip of the groynes divided by the total transport. It is found that the sensitivity of the littoral drift to variations in groyne spacing and the angle, of the approaching waves, is inversely proportional to Q geo *. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The long-distance transport of Yellow River sediments has formed an omega-shaped ('Ω') distal muddy deposit in the Yellow Sea. Numerous studies have investigated the sediment dynamics and sedimentary evolution of the deposit, but several key questions remain unanswered due to insufficient observations. To reveal the mechanisms of sediment dynamics and quantify sediment transport and deposition processes, this study collected field datasets in the depocenter of the muddy deposit off the Shandong Peninsula. Bottom mounted tripods were deployed from August 18 to 27, 2017, and from February 23 to March 2, 2018, during which two strong wind events with speeds of over 10.8 m/s occurred. The results showed that near-bed suspended sediment concentration responded directly to varying hydrodynamic conditions, and significant differences in suspended sediment concentration between two wind events could be ascribed to a number of factors (e.g., tidal current, wave periods, wind stress, turbulence). The harmonic analysis demonstrated that suspended sediment variations during the spring tide were directed mainly by resuspension, while resuspension and advection contributed equally at neap tide. The variations in background suspended sediment concentration can be ascribed to the residual current. Furthermore, the sediment transport pattern is similar to the pattern of water circulation. Generally, the along-shore suspended sediment flux is about one order of magnitude higher than the cross-shore flux. In summer, the suspended sediment was transported mainly downcoast. In winter, sediment was transported downcoast during wavy periods and upcoast during calm periods. Advection dominated sediment flux in most cases, except during wavy periods when local resuspension increased significantly, and the contribution of resuspension term to along-shore flux was up to 87%. Meanwhile, cross-shore flux also increased significantly under strong winds, which was simultaneously modulated by downcoast and offshore winds. After statistical analysis, we found that offshore winds controlled the cross-shore sediment transport in winter. Using parameterized calculation and statistical analysis, the average accumulation rate of the study site was estimated to be 0.6 cm/yr. During calm periods, lower background sediment concentration in summer led to lower deposition rates than in winter. In addition, the frequent strong wind events in winter cause extremely high erosion rates. Eroded sediment is an important feature of permanent gully's development; however, obtaining the specific characteristics of the sediment transport in the gully can be difficult. Thus, a composite fingerprinting technique, incorporating uncertainty analysis, has been employed to investigate the mean relative contribution of sediment sources in permanent gullies. In this study, 31 tracers were measured at 62 different sampling sites from three layers of a gully wall [surface layer (SL), sandy soil layer (SSL), and semi-weathering rock layer (SWL)] and 36 sediment samples from the slumping deposit and alluvial fan of the gullies. The sediment source tracing procedure was therefore used to assess the relative contribution of each source. The mean relative contribution from the SL to the sediment of the slumping deposit is higher in the active gully (G1), and is relatively lower in the potentially stable (G2) and stable gullies (G3); thus there was no obvious gully bank retreat in G2 and G3. In different places of the G1 alluvial fan, the mean relative contribution of the SL, SSL and SWL ranged from 9–11, 36–43 and 46–55%, respectively. However, the sediment contribution of the SL increased in G2 and G3 due to the changes in the erosion type. The mean relative contributions of the SL were 33 ± 5 (G2) and 30 ± 3% (G3). The new toolbox ScourApp is presented and applied for analysis of the complex interactions between local scour and sediment deposition at bridges during floods and to determine the relative importance of the controlling parameters on scour depth. ScourApp represents the time-dependent sediment transport processes through modern empirical formulations to compute the evolution of scour depth at a bridge pier. Results show that the mathematical model reproduces observed scour depths with high accuracy and confirm that ScourApp is a suitable tool for scour analysis. The model parameters controlling the time dependent scour depth were the equilibrium scour depth, and two constants representing the effects of pier geometry, flow and sediment. Sensitivity analysis showed that all three scour model parameters exhibited a nearly linear relation with the final scour depth. Moreover, results considering sediment deposition obtained for the Rapel Bridge showed that scour depths are highly sensitive to the sediment supply rate. It has been proposed that at short timescales of 102–105 yr, climatic variability can explain variations in sediment flux, but in orogens with pronounced climatic gradients rate changes caused by the oscillating efficiency in rainfall, runoff, and/or sediment transport and deposition are still not well-constrained. To explore landscape responses under variable climatic forcing, we evaluate time windows of prevailing sediment aggradation and related paleo-erosion rates from the southern flanks of the Dhauladhar Range in the western Himalaya. We compare past and present 10Be-derived erosion rates of well-dated Late Pleistocene fluvial landforms and modern river sediments and reconstruct the sediment aggradation and incision history based on new luminescence data. Our results document significant variations in erosion rates ranging from 0.1 to 3.4 mm/yr over the Late Pleistocene. We find that, during times of weak monsoon intensity, the moderately steep areas (hillslope angles of 27 ± 13°) erode at lower rates of 0.1–0.4 mm/yr compared to steeper (>40°) crestal regions of the Dhauladhar Range that erode at 0.8−1.3 mm/yr. In contrast, during several millennia of stronger monsoon intensity, both the moderately steep and high slope areas record higher erosion rates (>1-3.4 mm/yr). Lithological clast-count analysis shows that this increase of erosion is focused in the moderately steep areas, where Lesser Himalayan rocks are exposed. Abstract: A computational investigation is presented of mono-, bi-, and polydisperse lock-exchange turbidity currents interacting with complex bottom topography. Simulation results obtained with the software TURBINS are compared with laboratory experiments of other authors. Several features of the flow, such as deposit profiles, front location, suspended mass, and runout length, are discussed. For a monodisperse lock-exchange current propagating over a flat surface, we investigate the influence of the boundary conditions at the streamwise and top boundaries, and we generally find good agreement with corresponding laboratory experiments. However, we note some differences with a second set of experimental data for polydisperse turbidity currents over flat surfaces. A comparison with experimental data for bidisperse currents with varying mass fractions of coarse and fine particles yields good agreement for all cases except those where the current consists almost exclusively of fine particles. For polydisperse currents over a two-dimensional bottom topography, significant discrepancies are observed. Possible reasons are discussed, including erosion and bed load transport. Abstract: This laboratory study describes the sediment patterns formed in a sand bed around circular patches of rigid vertical cylinders, representing a patch of reedy emergent vegetation. The patch diameter was much smaller than the channel width. Two patch densities (solid volume fraction 3% and 10%) and two patch diameters (22 and 10cm) were considered. For flows above the threshold of sediment motion, patterns of sediment erosion and deposition were observed around and within the patch. Scouring within the patch was positively correlated with turbulent kinetic energy in the patch. For sparse patches, sediment scoured from within the patch was mostly deposited within one patch diameter downstream of the patch. For dense patches, which experience greater flow diversion, sediment scoured from the patch was carried farther downstream before deposition along the patch centerline. Differences between the sparse and dense patch patterns of deposition are explained in the context of flow diversion and wake structure, which are related to a nondimensional flow blockage parameter. Abstract: Analysis of typhoon- and earthquake-triggered landsliding and fluvial response in the Tachia River, central Taiwan, documents highly episodic sediment supply over decade to century timescales. Landslide data from the Chi-Chi earthquake (1999) and subsequent typhoons (2001, 2004, and 2005) quantify the sediment supply from these events. Fluvial response was investigated by decadal-scale and century-scale longitudinal river profile data spanning 1904 to 2008 and by sediment delivery recorded in suspended sediment load and reservoir sedimentation data. Our results show that the different time periods of satellite images and aerial photographs used in previous studies make it difficult to unambiguously identify the causes of landslides previously attributed by some studies to the effects of the Chi-Chi earthquake rather than subsequent high intensity precipitation. In response to significant variability in sediment delivery from hillslopes, century-scale profile variation data indicate substantial bed surface elevation change of 2.6±6.7m, and decade-scale bed surface elevation change of 1.1±3.3m. Since 1993, the downstream reaches incised in response to bedload sediment trapping by reservoirs while headwater reaches aggraded in response to increased sediment delivery from uplands. A tremendous increase in reservoir sedimentation after 2000 likely reflects the effects of the highest decade-average daily rainfall since 1900. Suspended sediment load data indicate a post Chi-Chi earthquake increase in sediment concentration in low-flow events but do not exhibit the clear influence on sediment yields at higher flows as (e.g., typhoons) reported by others for fluvial response in the epicentral region. Abstract: The Wadden Sea and its associated barrier island system exhibit highly dynamic behaviour. Of major concern is the movement of water and air and the transport, erosion and deposition of sand and mud. These processes result in an ever-changing morphology (topography/bathymetry) of the islands, tidal channels, inter-tidal shoals and tidal flats. This dynamic development of the shape and nature of the Wadden area forms together with the biotic systems, the present Wadden system. The morphodynamic development of the Wadden Sea is influenced by changing environmental conditions e.g. sea-level rise as well as by human interferences. For the management and protection of the Wadden system knowledge on the morphodynamic development is essential. However, our present knowledge is not sufficient to predict the effects of human interferences under different climate change scenarios in sufficient detail and accuracy. This paper identifies the existing knowledge gaps, based on a review of the state of the art on morphodynamics of the Wadden Sea that is confronted with major requirements from a coastal zone management point of view. The identified knowledge gaps have to inspire and stimulate research in the fields of the large-scale sediment budgets, morphodynamic changes at smaller scales, processes and mechanisms of sediment transport, erosion and deposition and modelling tools. Abstract: This contribution presents a model approach to simulate the erosion, entrainment, deposition, and burial of the surface fine-grained laminae (SFGL) in low-gradient streams. We hypothesized that SFGL transport acts as a geomorphic control of the erosion and transport of sediment sources in a bedrock-controlled, low-gradient stream with fluvial deposits located in central Kentucky, USA. Results indicate that the SFGL development and temporary storage on the streambed surface plays a key role in maintaining an equilibrium streambed. The SFGL provides an easily erodible sediment source that satisfies the transport capacity of the stream during low to moderate flow events and thus protects deeper streambed sediment and streambank sediments from erosion. Modeling results showed that the simulation period was characterized by low to moderate hydrologic events which flush the SFGL from the stream and high flow events which deposit fine sediments into the SFGL. During the former, transported sediments were dominated by sediments of SFGL origin, i.e., 89% of sediments. During the latter, 33% of sediment input to the stream is deposited to the SFGL, which shows its importance as a temporary sink. Our model results support a novel concept that the ephemeral SFGL layers can satisfy sediment transport capacity of flow at low to moderate flows and thus protect other sources from erosion. While perhaps the bedrock, low-gradient stream studied provides an end-member to SFGL control, future research might investigate the importance of SFGL control in other stream systems. Abstract: The largest plain in the North Vietnam has formed by the redundant sediment of the Red River system. Sediment supply is not equally distributed, causing erosion in some places. The paper analyzes the evolvement and physical mechanism of the erosion. The overlay of five recent topographical maps (1930, 1965, 1985, 1995, and 2001) shows that sediment redundantly deposits at some big river mouths (Ba Lat, Lach, and Day), leading to rapid accretion (up to 100m/y). Typical mechanism of delta propagation is forming and connecting sand bars in front of the mouths. Erosion coasts are distributed either between the river mouths (Hai Hau) or nearby them (Giao Long, Giao Phong, and Nghia Phuc). The evolvement of erosion is caused by wave-induced longshore southwestward sediment transport. Meanwhile sediment from the river mouths is not directed to deposit nearshore. The development of sand bars can intensively reduce the erosion rate nearby river mouths. Erosion in Hai Hau is accelerated by sea level rise and upstream dams. Sea dike stability is seriously threatened by erosion-induced lowering of beach profiles, sea level rise, typhoon, and storm surge. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Analyzed the sediment-transport process in high sediment-laden river, the new concept and calculating method for sediment-transport water volume are proposed. Based on field data of sediment and water volume in the Lower Yellow River from 1950 to 2000, the sediment-transport water volume and unit sediment-transport water volume in LYR are calculated. Meanwhile, relations between them and influencing factors are confirmed to calculate efficient sediment-transport water volume after construction of the Xiaolangdi reservoir. Abstract: We present the most complete and new high-resolution multibeam bathymetry datasets from the shelf to the basin in the Ribbon Reef region, northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Analysis of these data, combined with existing side-scan sonar data provides a detailed morphologic framework of the submarine canyon system and other related features, their spatial distribution, controlling factors on their evolution, and evidence of recent sedimentary activity. Two morphologically different submarine canyon types are recognised: 1) shelf-incised canyons whose heads are indented into the shelf-break at shallow-water depths (about 60 to 80m). These canyons can be single-fed or multi-fed depending on the number of tributaries that merge into the main canyon valley. According to the degree of connection with the shelf, these canyons can be reef-blocked, partly reef-blocked or shelf-connected; 2) slope-confined canyons, which are located at deeper waters in the slope and show a different canyon head morphology. Canyon formation and development of the different canyon types is explained according to a four-phase model. In the first phase, localised slope failures and/or sediment gravity flows may lead to the formation of an initial canyon by retrogressive headward or downslope erosion respectively. These processes continue during the second transitional phase, leading to upslope canyon progression. Finally, canyons breach the shelf-break during a mature stage that represents the more active phase in the canyon evolution. The development of an extensive shelf-edge barrier reef (Ribbon Reefs) represents a fourth phase that conditioned the sedimentary dynamics of the canyons. The location and morphology of this reef barrier determine the type and amount of sediment supply by controlling the connection of the canyon head with the shelf drainage system. Recent canyon activity is evidenced by the presence of erosive and depositional features that include submarine landslides, gullies and rills on the canyon walls and slopes, sandwaves migrating along the canyons floors, and sediment gravity flows deposited on the lower canyons and adjacent basin floor. Abstract: In order to assess the extent of sediment connectivity between uplands and lowlands and to quantify the processes of in-channel deposition and remobilization, measurements of suspended sediment fluxes were conducted in a nested rural catchment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Data were collected over one year at three upland sites (3 to 12km2) and two downstream stations (390–630km2). Our results show that a structural discontinuity in the catchment (i.e. abrupt slope decrease at the junction between piedmonts and the alluvial plain from 2 to 10% to<0.1%) could be compensated by functional continuity during floods. Direct conveyance of fine sediment to the outlet occurred when a high stream transport capacity was reached. Erosion of the streambed was observed on various occasions and accounted for up to 50% of the flux leaving the catchment during one event. Conversely, temporary in-channel storage was apparent on other occasions, amounting to up to 52% of the flux recorded upstream during one storm. These two distinct behaviours were approximately equally distributed along the rainy season and strongly driven by the extent of coupling between surface and subsurface water. This work indeed highlights the role of baseflow spatial variations in determining the extent of lowland sediment conveyance. Riverbed erosional processes occurred when large differences in pre-event baseflow values (i.e. at least a twofold longitudinal increase) were observed between the 5-km distant lowland stations. Abstract: Runoff from agricultural watersheds can carry a number of agricultural pollutants and pathogens; often associated with the sediment fraction. Deposition of this sediment can impact water quality and the ecology of the river, and the re-suspension of such sediment can become sources of contamination for reaches downstream. In this paper a modelling framework to predict sediment and associated microbial erosion, transport and deposition is proposed for the South Nation River, Ontario, Canada. The modelling framework is based on empirical relationships (deposition and re-suspension fluxes), derived from laboratory experiments in a rotating circular flume using sediment collected from the river bed. The bed shear stress governing the deposition and re-suspension processes in the stream was predicted using a one dimensional mobile boundary flow model called MOBED. Counts of live bacteria associated with the suspended and bed sediments were used in conjunction with measured suspended sediment concentration at an upstream section to allow for the estimation of sediment associated microbial erosion, transport and deposition within the modelled river reach. Results suggest that the South Nation River is dominated by deposition periods with erosion only occurring at flows above approximately 250 m3 s−1 (above this threshold, all sediment (suspended and eroded) with associated bacteria are transported through the modelled reach). As microbes are often associated with sediments, and can survive for extended periods of time, the river bed is shown to be a possible source of pathogenic organisms for erosion and transport downstream during large storm events. It is clear that, shear levels, bacteria concentrations and suspended sediment are interrelated requiring that these parameters be studied together in order to understand aquatic microbial dynamics. It is important that any management strategies and operational assessments for the protection of human and aquatic health incorporate the sediment compartments (suspended and bed sediment) and the energy dynamics within the system in order to better predict the concentration of indicator organism. Abstract: Quantifying suspended sediment exports from catchments and understanding suspended sediment dynamics within river networks is important, especially in areas draining erodible material that contributes to the siltation of downstream reservoirs and to the degradation of water quality. A one-year continuous monitoring study of water and sediment fluxes was conducted in three upland subcatchments (3.0, 9.3, and 12.0km2) located within the Cointzio basin, in the central volcanic highlands of Mexico (Michoacán state). Two subcatchments generated high sediment exports (i.e., Huertitas, 900–1500tkm−2 y−1 and Potrerillos, 600–800tkm−2 y−1), whereas the third subcatchment was characterized by a much lower sediment yield (i.e., La Cortina, 30tkm−2 y−1). Such disparities in subcatchment behaviours were associated with the presence of severely gullied areas in Huertitas and Potrerillos rather than with rainfall erosivity indices. An adapted classification of hysteretic patterns between suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and discharge was proposed because 42% of flood events contributing to 70% of sediment export were not discriminated by the classical clockwise/anticlockwise typology. This new classification allowed the identification of relationships in the hydrosedimentary responses of successive floods. A stream transport capacity limit was also detected during hydrograph recession phases. Overall, hydrosedimentary processes proved to be seasonally dependent: sediment export was repeatedly limited by the stream transport capacity during the first part of the rainy season, whereas a channel minimum erosivity threshold was frequently reached at the end of the season. Abstract: A geophysical and geological survey (CHAMAK) has been carried out on the Makran accretionary wedge off Pakistan in order to understand the structure of the margin and the recent sedimentary processes in this self-maintaining prism disconnected from the modern Indus inputs (Qayyum et al., 1997; Gaedicke et al., 2002a; Schluter et al., 2002). Morphostructural analysis, based on the interpretation of bathymetric data and backscatter imagery, as well as a 3.5kHz echo-character mapping, allow us to distinguish three structural domains, from north to south, where sedimentary processes differ: (1) the accretionary wedge to the north, (2) the trench and (3) the northern Murray Ridge at the seaward edge of the trench. The accretionary wedge is cut by canyons responsible for an important erosion of the prism especially in the eastern part of the wedge. Within the trench, sediments transported by the canyons generate sediment waves and are transported westward, parallel to the E–W axis of the trench. The eastern part of the abyssal plain is eroded by strong turbidity currents whereas important sediment deposition occurs in the western part of the abyssal plain, as a consequence of a decrease in the current energy. Nearly no mass transport deposits are recognized in the study area except near the ridges forming the accretionary wedge. Small-scale slope failure scars are described. The prevalence of turbiditic processes and the existence of a morphological barrier formed by the Murray Ridge allow the confinement of turbidites within the trench. Migrating sediment waves seem to be common sedimentary structures in this setting. These features might be produced by important velocity decrease of turbidity currents when reaching the trench. Abstract: Laboratory experiments using steady flows and simulated tidal flows were conducted to evaluate two conflicting paradigms for cohesive sediment transport: mutually exclusive vs. simultaneous erosion and deposition. Due to the secondary flow and skewed distribution of bed shear stress (τ b), the deposition space is mostly confined to the inner wall of an annular flume. The area of deposition (or the length of deposition because of the axially symmetrical flow) provides an indicator to determine when deposition at the sediment–water interface starts. The direct observation of deposition stemming from the inner corner suggests that a critical shear stress for deposition (τ cd =0.03–0.06 Pa) does exist. Changes in deposit length and depth-averaged suspended sediment concentration (SSC) under simulated tidal cycles demonstrate that deposition can happen only in tidal decelerating phases when local τ b is less than τ cd. The exclusive paradigm incorporated with the correct erosion threshold (τ ce) profile and erosion behavior could explain changes in laboratory- and field-observed depth-averaged SSC under all tidal regimes. Identifying the erosion processes contributing to increased basin fine sediment yield is important for reducing downstream impacts on aquatic ecosystems. However, erosion rates are spatially variable, and much eroded sediment is stored within river basins and not delivered downstream. A spatially distributed sediment budget model is described that assesses the primary sources (hillslope soil erosion, gully and riverbank erosion) and sinks (floodplain and reservoir deposition) of fine sediment for each link in a river network. The model performance is evaluated in a 17,000-km2 basin in south-east Australia using measured suspended sediment yields from eight catchments within the basin, each 100–700km2 in area. Spatial variations within the basin in yield and area-specific yield were reliably predicted. Observed yields and area-specific yields varied by 17-fold and 15-fold respectively between the catchments, while predictions were generally within a factor of 2 of observations. Model efficiency at predicting variations in area-specific yield was good outside forested areas (0.58), and performance was weakly sensitive to parameter values. Yields from forested areas were under-predicted, and reducing the predicted influence of riparian vegetation on bank erosion improved model performance in those areas. The model provided more accurate and higher resolution predictions than catchment area interpolation of measured yields from neighbouring river basins. Abstract: A century of human manipulation of sediment transport and sediment supply at Sandy Hook spit has generated an evolving suite of geomorphological responses and shoreline management approaches at this public coastal resource. Eventually a major erosion problem was created in a portion of the Gateway National Recreation Area knows as the “Critical Zone”, a location immediately downdrift of the end of a lengthy seawall. In the last three decades, the management approach was to apply beach nourishment to replace the eroded volumes. Projects emplacing from 20000 m3 to 1.7 million m3 of sand in the Critical Zone attempted to counter the erosional trend. However, evolving Park policy sought to identify alternatives to the massive emplacements of sand from offshore sources. Starting in 1997, detailed topographical surveys were begun to track sediment budget in the eroding Critical Zone, and subsequently at Gunnison Beach, a site of sediment accumulation. A new management philosophy of smaller scale restoration of sediment supply in the Critical Zone has emerged. At present, the Gunnison Beach area on Sandy Hook is being monitored to determine its potential for sediment backpassing to the Critical Zone as a means to balance its local sediment budget, create a relatively consistent topography, and maintain the recreational resources. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the interacting mechanism between the saltating particles near a channel bed. A three-dimensional real-time flow visualization technique was developed to measure the interparticle collision behaviors during the saltating process. Based on the experimental data, the distribution of the collision points was found to be symmetric. This confirms the assumption that the projections of the collision points onto the reasonable plane are uniformly distributed. A three-dimensional saltating model was also developed. This model produced satisfactory results. The model is able to simulate the continuous saltating trajectories of several particles. The simulated dimensionless saltating height, longitudinal and vertical saltation velocity components were found to increase as the dimensionless particle diameter and the dimensionless flow transport capacity parameter increase, while the simulated lateral saltation velocity component varies inversely with the dimensionless flow transport capacity parameter. Abstract: Sandy sediments in shallow coastal waters of the Baltic Sea are often characterised by large numbers of biogenic structures which are produced by macrozoobenthos species. A series of experiments was devised to quantify how the interaction of such structures with the near-bed flow regime affects the sediment flux. Most experiments were done with simplified replicates of structures generated by typical species commonly found in the Mecklenburg Bight, starting with solitary structures and regularly-spaced arrays in a range of characteristic population densities, followed by a complex benthic macrofauna community, both artificial and alive. A laboratory flume channel, equipped with an acoustic Doppler flow sensor and a topography scanning laser, was used for high-resolution measurements (2 mm horizontal step size and 0.3 mm vertical resolution) of sand erosion (220 µm median grain size, at 20 cm s−1) and fine particle deposition (8 µm grain size, at 5 cm s−1). Sediment transport threshold values were measured for each layout. As a rule-of-thumb, both the erosion fluxes and the deposition of suspended matter increased considerably at low population densities (below 2%, expressed as percent of the sediment surface covered, i.e. roughness density RD). Above densities of 4%, erosion almost stopped inside the test arrays, and deposition remained well below the level of unpopulated areas. An attempt to extrapolate these findings to field conditions (using field current velocity data from 2001) showed that the net flux switched from erosion to deposition for densities above 5%. These parameters can now be integrated into a numerical sediment transport model coupling waves, currents, sediment dynamics and biological processes, which is currently under construction at the Baltic Sea Research Institute (IOW), Rostock, Germany. Abstract: A numerical model suitable for the reproduction of bed evolution in natural alluvial rivers and in channels of complex geometry is presented. It is based on a conservative formulation of one-dimensional shallow water equations, which includes an original treatment of the momentum equation source term. The proposed model has already been cross referenced with several test cases and experimental data found in the literature for fixed beds. In this study, however, the focus is on mobile bottom beds. The selected test cases are representative of some of the characteristic bed configurations that often occur in natural streams, and, therefore, are suitable for verifying the versatility of the model and its potential usefulness in the treatment of alluvial rivers. The MacCormack explicit finite difference scheme has been adopted for the numerical implementation. The liquid and solid phases are then solved by means of a semi-coupled procedure. A variety of bed evolution mechanisms and different water regime conditions are investigated in order to verify the model response in the cases of erosion, deposition and bed morphology evolution. The results show a good correspondence with the experimental data. Furthermore, the proposed model shows a notable numerical stability even when applied to test cases that are particularly difficult under the numerical computational profile, where the relative model of the standard formulation of the conservative balance equations shows evident numerical instability. Abstract: A technique is described to observe and quantify wave-by-wave bed-level changes in the swash zone. The ultrasonic instrument system is non-contact with the beach face surface being measured and the sensors remain outside of the fluid flows causing sediment movement. Sensor resolution combined with the electronic noise inherent within a digital network data-logging system results in a (conservative) measurement accuracy of ±1 mm, equating to a couple of sand grain diameters in height. Illustrative field results demonstrate the practical use of the instrumentation, and a simple data pre-processing method to separate swashes and intervening bed-level ‘events’ is discussed. These example data reveal rather complex fluctuations of the bed observed over time periods of minutes to hours. Rather strikingly, gross bed-level changes per wave are revealed to be up to many orders of magnitude larger than the observed net rate of beach face evolution. It is outlined how observations of successive bed-level changes at multiple locations within a dense grid, combined with a consideration of sediment continuity, will now enable the total net sediment transported per uprush–backwash to be quantified. Abstract: Numerical modeling of a beach nourishment project is conducted to enable a detailed evaluation of the processes associated with the effects of nearshore dredge pits on nourishment evolution and formation of erosion hot spots. A process-based numerical model, Delft3D, is used for this purpose. The analysis is based on the modification of existing bathymetry to simulate “what if” scenarios with/without the bathymetric features of interest. Borrow pits dredged about 30 years ago to provide sand for the nourishment project have a significant influence on project performance and formation of erosional hot spots. It was found that the main processes controlling beach response to these offshore bathymetric features were feedbacks between wave forces (roller force or alongshore component of the radiation stress), pressure gradients due to differentials in wave set-up/set-down and bed shear stress. Modeling results also indicated that backfilling of selected borrow sites showed a net positive effect within the beach fill limits and caused a reduction in the magnitude of hot spot erosion. Abstract: To predict sediment transport under oscillatory sheet flow condition, especially for fine sand, is still a challenging research subject in coastal engineering. This paper describes a newly-developed numerical model based on two-phase theory with the use of a one-equation turbulence closure, and its applications in predicting fine sediment suspension in near-prototype oscillatory sheet flow conditions. Model results were compared with comprehensive laboratory measurements of flow velocity and sediment concentration under both symmetrical and asymmetrical oscillatory sheet flows from a large-scale water tunnel. Good agreements between the model results and measurements were achieved and the results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing detailed characteristics of sediment entrainment process in the sheet flow regime. The comparisons also revealed the fact that the concentration peaks at flow reversal is associated with the strong vertical sediment transport flux in the pickup layer, which has been widely observed in many laboratory experiments. Abstract: The present paper analyses the interrelation between erosion, sediment transportation and accumulation proposed by N. I. Makkaveyev (1908–1983) and its further development in modern studies of river channel processes in Russia. Spatio-temporal linkages between erosion and accumulation are defined considering channel processes at different scales –river longitudinal profile, channel morphological patterns, alluvial bedforms (bars, dunes) and individual sediment particles. Relations between river geomorphic activity, flow transportation capacity and sediment budgets are established (sediment input and output; channel bed erosion and sediment entrainment into flow –termination of sediment transport and its deposition). Channel planforms, floodplain segments separated by the latter and alluvial channel bedforms are shown to be geomorphic expressions of sediment transport process at different spatial and temporal scales. This paper is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of N. I. Makkaveyev, Professor of the Moscow State University, author of the book “River channel and erosion in its basin” (1955). That book is regarded in Russia as the pioneering work which initiated the complex hydrological and geographical studies of channel processes and laid a basis for the theory of unified fluvial erosion-accumulation process. Abstract: Previous comparisons of Martian aeolian dunes in satellite images have not detected any change in dune form or position. Here, we show dome dunes in the north polar region that shrank and then disappeared over a period of 3.04 Mars years (5.7 Earth years), while larger, neighboring dunes showed no erosion or movement. The removal of sand from these dunes indicates that not only is the threshold wind speed for saltation exceeded under present conditions on Mars, but that any sand that is available for transport is likely to be moved. Abstract: Initiated by the need to quantify erosion rates and the impacts of global changes on erosion, several attempts have been made to apply erosion models at regional scales. However, these models have often been directed towards on-site soil erosion estimates, emphasising sheet and rill erosion processes, and disregarding gully erosion, channel erosion and sediment transport. These models are therefore of limited use for the assessment of sediment yield, off-site impacts of erosion, and for the development of environmental management to control these impacts at regional scale. This study analyses and compares three spatially distributed models for the prediction of soil erosion and/or sediment yield at regional scales: the WATEM-SEDEM model that is based on the empirical Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in combination with a sediment transport equation, the physics-based Pan European Soil Erosion Risk Assessment model (PESERA), and a newly developed Spatially Distributed Scoring model (SPADS). The three models were applied to 61 Spanish drainage basins and model predictions were evaluated against data on measured reservoir sedimentation rates. Global data sets on land use, climate, elevation and soil characteristics were used as model input for WATEM-SEDEM and SPADS, whereas published soil erosion estimates of PESERA at 1 km2 resolution were used directly. SPADS and WATEM-SEDEM provided best results after separate calibration for basins with a Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) higher than 5% and those with an SDR lower than 5%. In this way, SPADS explained 67% of variation in sediment yield, while WATEM-SEDEM explained 48% of the variation. PESERA represents a promising alternative to the use of empirical models at the regional scale as it can be applied to very diverse environments with little calibration. However, PESERA provides soil erosion rates and not sediment yield estimates. For most basins PESERA soil erosion rates vary between fifty and close to zero percent of total sediment yield. Two major factors may explain this discrepancy between modelled soil erosion rates and measured sediment yield. First, it may be that PESERA underestimates soil erosion under Mediterranean conditions, although PESERA soil erosion rates are of the same order of magnitude as erosion rates measured in erosion plot studies. Second, gully-, river channel erosion and sediment transport processes may be much more important than sheet- and rill erosion for regional scale sediment yield in these environments. These issues therefore require further attention in future model development. Although spatially lumped models provide better predictions of sediment yield at the basin scale, and while validation of the predicted spatial patterns of sources and sinks of sediment requires further research, spatially distributed models are expected to be of value to support management decisions regarding the assessment of on-site and off-site impacts of erosion at the regional scale. Abstract: Implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) has forced regulatory authorities to take an integrated view of the link between water quality and catchment management. In Northern Ireland, concern over progressive habitat degradation of one of the Province''s prime salmon rivers (the River Bush) provided the stimulus for a sediment monitoring programme. The aims of this study were to quantify instream sediment loads and to identify sources of fine sediment feeding into the river channel. This information would then be used to justify changes in the way the catchment''s resources were managed. Sediment loads were assessed at four sampling stations on the River Bush system over a one-year period (between 18/07/02 and 24/07/03) using sediment collection tubes and pit-type traps. These ranged between 0.196 and 4.98 t yr−1 for bed load and 1.70 and 102 t yr−1 for suspended load. A combination of desktop studies (erosion potential mapping), monitoring (visual observations, bank erosion magnitude and yield) and analytical work (sediment fingerprinting) was then applied in order to elucidate links between catchment sediment erosion and downstream sediment delivery. Bank erosion was highest in regions of the catchment with the least cohesive bank materials during high flow conditions. Livestock poaching and peak flows caused damage to banks at a localised scale and led to selective patches of bare land being susceptible to further erosion, augmenting the sediment load (approximately 2% of the annual suspended sediment and 60% of the annual bed load). Drainage maintenance work (60% and 30%), forest clearfell (1% and 2%) and ploughed land (37% and 8%) also contributed to the annual suspended sediment and bed load, respectively. Nine key actions were suggested in order to improve habitat quality in relation to sediment supply in the River Bush. These included wetland restoration; prohibiting drainage maintenance work; strategies to control conifer plantation felling; reducing bare ground; livestock access restrictions; construction site management; macrophyte clearance; employment of a river warden and systematic dissemination of project recommendations to the general public to generate community involvement. It was essential that these actions were both cost effective and practical in order to maximise catchment stakeholder uptake. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Submarine channels have long been considered analogous to meandering fluvial channels due to their similar planform geometry, and this has given rise to strong analogies in terms of the fluid dynamics of these channel types. However, there is a paucity of direct measurements detailing the structure of velocity or sediment concentration, and nothing is known about the structure of secondary flow, within submarine channels. Within fluvial channels, secondary circulation has been shown to be an important control of erosion, deposition, lateral sediment transport and overall bend stability. This paper presents a series of experiments in which saline gravity currents flowed through a submerged, fixed-form, sinuous channel model. Ultrasonic Doppler velocity profiling provided high-resolution, three-dimensional visualisation of flow fields, thereby allowing the first quantitative visualisation of velocity profiles and secondary flows of a saline gravity current within a sinuous submarine channel. The same model was also used to measure the structure of flow within a subaerial channel, thereby providing a detailed comparison between a submarine and fluvial channel. The data reveal that secondary flow cells in submarine channels are best developed at bend apexes and that the basal component of the flow cell moves from the inside to the outside of the bend, in a reversed direction to that expected from models of fluvial bend flow. These results are of prime importance when assessing the validity of comparisons between submarine and fluvial channels, and the role of secondary flow cells in the migration and evolution of meander bends. This work demonstrates that the fundamental flow processes controlling the evolution and migration of submarine and fluvial channels may be very different, and suggest that the form and evolution of submarine channels may also show different properties to their fluvial counterparts. Abstract: Distributed erosion models are potentially good tools for locating soil sediment sources and guiding efficient Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) planning, but the uncertainty of model predictions may be high. In this study, the distribution of erosion within a catchment was predicted with a semi-empirical erosion model that combined a semi-distributed hydrological model with the Morgan, Morgan and Finney (MMF) empirical erosion model. The model was tested in a small catchment of the West Usambara Mountains (Kwalei catchment, Tanzania). Soil detachability rates measured in splash cups (0.48–1.16gJ−1) were close to model simulations (0.30–0.35gJ−1). Net erosion rates measured in Gerlach troughs (0.01–1.05kgm−2 per event) were used to calibrate the sediment transport capacity of overland flow. Uncertainties of model simulations due to parameterisation of overland flow sediment transport capacity were assessed with the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) methodology. The quality of the spatial predictions was assessed by comparing the simulated erosion pattern with the field-observed erosion pattern, measuring the agreement with the weighted Kappa coefficient of the contingency table. Behavioural parameter sets (weighted Kappa >0.50) were those with short reinfiltration length (<1.5m) and ratio of overland flow power α to local topography power γ close to 0.5. In the dynamic Hortonian hydrologic regime and the dissected terrain of Kwalei catchment, topography controlled the distribution of erosion more than overland flow. Simulated erosion rates varied from −4 to +2kgm−2 per season. The model simulated correctly around 75% of erosion pattern. The uncertainty of model predictions due to sediment transport capacity was high; around 10% of the fields were attributed to either slight or severe erosion. The difficult characterisation of catchment-scale effective sediment transport capacity parameters poses a major limit to distributed erosion modelling predicting capabilities. Abstract: This paper focuses on the analysis of the morphological response induced by low-crested structures on the adjacent seabed, with emphasis on the far-field erosion that is frequently observed close to roundheads and at the gaps between structures. The analysis is based on observations of far-field erosion, both at prototype scale and in laboratory experiments. Mechanisms responsible for the observed erosion are highlighted using coastal area numerical modelling tools to simulate the flow patterns induced by schemes involving low-crested structures. Finally, an example of the use of a coastal area morphological modelling system to investigate the dependence of the far-field erosion processes on the freeboard of the coastal protection structures is presented and discussed.
