In recent years, the severe environmental degradation and high levels of fossil fuel consumption linked to conventional ship energy systems have drawn attention to the advancement of alternative ship energy systems. Consequently, ship energy systems based on the use of an electrical microgrid are coming to the fore as an increasingly popular alternative solution. However, managing the energy flows within a shipboard microgrid can be highly challenging due to the multiple energy sources (including renewable energy sources) and types of loads involved. Additionally, the integration of an energy storage system has been identified as an effective solution for improving the reliability of shipboard power systems, pointing out the important role of energy storage systems in maritime microgrids and their potential to enhance the energy management process. As such, effective energy management strategies are necessary to optimize performance and ensure that the vessel's energy demands are met while minimizing fuel consumption and reducing cost and environmental impacts. This paper presents a comprehensive review of such strategies and methods recently presented in the literature associated with energy management in shipboard microgrids integrating energy storage systems and examine the different techniques that can be utilized to achieve optimal system performance. Moreover, the paper also sheds light on the future challenges and perspectives imposed by the modern shipboard microgrids operation on the energy/power management of these systems. Buildings are becoming suitable for application of sophisticated energy management approaches to increase their energy efficiency and possibly turn them into active energy market participants. The paper proposes a modular coordination mechanism between building zones comfort control and building microgrid energy flows control based on model predictive control. The approach opens possibilities to modularly coordinate technologically heterogeneous building subsystems for economically-optimal operation under user comfort constraints. The imposed modularity is based on a simple interface for exchanging building consumption and microgrid energy price profiles. This is a key element for technology separation, replication and up-scaling towards the levels of smart grids and smart cities where buildings play active roles in energy management. The proposed coordination mechanism is presented in a comprehensive realistic case study of maintaining comfort in an office building with integrated microgrid. The approach stands out with significant performance improvements compared to various non-coordinated predictive control schemes and baseline controllers. Results give detailed information about yearly cost-effectiveness of the considered configurations, which are suitable for deployment as short- and long- term zero-energy building investments. An optimal techno-economic multi-level energy management strategy (EMS) is designed for a DC microgrid applied to a commercial building. The proposed power system is a grid-connected microgrid composed of a fuel cell (FC) system, a photovoltaic (PV) array, and a battery storage unit. The interaction between various types of power sources may lead to stability problems. Moreover, providing an uninterruptible and high-quality power supply, reducing operating costs, and maximizing system efficiency are essential factors. This paper presents a techno-economic EMS, one of the most significant objectives for the following years. The proposed EMS comprises two levels for minimizing the operating cost and supplying the load and another control level based on flatness control theory to improve the power quality. The first level is based on one of the following EMSs: State Machine Control (SMC), Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), and External Energy Maximization Strategy (EEMS) to improve efficiency and reduce the required power. The second level is based on the economic dispatching algorithm (EDA) to reduce the operating cost and ensure a UPS. Finally, the system performance is elaborated; the simulation results prove the superiority of the EEMS-EDA combination, where the cost-saving can be enhanced by 3.47%, and the efficiency is about 80.44%. This research proposes an effective energy management strategy (EMS) for the economic operation under standalone and grid-connected operating modes of integrated solar renewables microgrid. The proposed microgrid is composed of a photovoltaic generator (PV), a fuel cell system (FC), and a battery storage system. The random nature of the renewable and the load power imposed some stability problems and economic problems, including operating costs. The suggested technique was based on the bald eagle search optimization algorithm (BES), which was designed for a one-day scheduling horizon. The key objectives of this paper were to satisfy the load power with the lowest operating costs under a stable direct current (DC) bus voltage, enhance the overall system efficiency and protect the battery from deep discharge and overcharge. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, the obtained results were compared with other optimizers, including particle swarm optimization (PSO), salp swarm algorithm (SSA), artificial eco-system optimizer (AEO), COOT optimizer, and political optimizer (PO). The comparison confirmed the superiority of the proposed strategy in terms of minimum operating energy cost (0.1577c€/kW), high efficiency (87.395%) and final SoC (33.268%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper intends to present a cooperative control framework for a connected cluster of microgrids with multi-smart greenhouses creating a smart local electric grid in the framework of smart grids. Each microgrid comprises renewable generators, pumps, advanced communication and metering infrastructure, water reservoir, energy storage device, and a set of greenhouses where each one includes heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), CO 2 injector, artificial lighting, sensors, local pump, and fans. The key objective is to formulate a coordinated optimization framework embedded in a model predictive control (MPC) scheme to optimally control the operation of the clustered microgrids and manage the power flows exchange ensuring a high quality of service. The microgrids are connected permitting the power exchanges to enhance the utilization of local renewable generations. Furthermore, the cluster is connected to the main grid through a power link permitting power exchange in excess/shortage case. The cooperation is achieved throughout a bidirectional communication infrastructure, where a centralized controller is responsible of managing the different control signals. A comprehensive scheduling optimization algorithm is developed and implemented to effectively control the clustered microgrids operation considering the operational constraints, where the purpose is to enhance energy efficiency, and manipulating effectively the microclimate variables defining the optimal environment for crops development in all greenhouses.
