Cadmium (Cd) pollution of agricultural soil is of public concern due to its high potential toxicity and mobility. This study aimed to reveal the risk of Cd accumulation in soil and wheat/maize systems, with a specific focus on the source-specific ecological risk, human health risk and Cd enrichment model. For this we investigated more than 6100 paired soil and grain samples with 216 datasets including soil Cd contents, soil pH and grain Cd contents of 85 sites from China. The results showed that mining activities, sewage irrigation, industrial activities and agricultural practices were the critical factors causing Cd accumulation in wheat and maize cultivated sites. Thereinto, mining activities contributed to a higher Cd accumulation risk in the southwest China and Middle Yellow River regions; sewage irrigation influenced the Cd accumulation in the North China Plain. In addition, the investigated sites were classified into different categories by comparing their soil and grain Cd contents with the Chinese soil screening values and food safety values, respectively. Cd enrichment models were developed to predict the Cd levels in wheat and maize grains. The results showed that the models exhibited a good performance for predicting the grain Cd contents among safe and warning sites of wheat (R2 = 0.61 and 0.72, respectively); while the well-fitted model for maize was prone to the overestimated sites (R2 = 0.77). The use of "green manure"—crops that are cultivated specifically to be incorporated into the soil to increase its organic matter content—has been proposed as an alternative to chemical fertilizer because of its benefits in terms of crop yield. Nonetheless, the differential impacts of green manure on ammonia volatilization remains underexplored. In this study, the influence of various green manure management strategies on ammonia volatilization in maize cultivation were examined. Field experiments conducted from 2020 to 2022, the field experiment applied common vetch after the spring wheat harvest, with five distinct treatments: conventional tillage without green manures as a control (CT); tillage with total green manure incorporation (TG); no-tillage with total green manure mulching (NTG); tillage with only root incorporation (T); and no-tillage with removal of aboveground green manure (NT). The results showed that under TG and NTG, the maize yields were 12.3%-33.2% higher than under CT, and 6.8%-18.8% higher than under T and NT. Compared with CT, all four green manure management practices also significantly increased NH 3 emissions in maize fields, and they increased ammonia volatilization by 12.0%-13.7% in NTG and TG compared to root retention patterns, with NTG exhibiting higher rates than TG. NTG significantly increased soil organic matter, total nitrogen, mineral nitrogen, water-filled pore space (WFPS), microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and C: N, and it decreased soil pH compared to TG. Regression analysis showed that these factors were correlated with NH 3 volatilization. In addition, soil urease and ammonia-oxidation functional genes (amo A) showed differences under green manure management practices. Structural equation modeling showed that NH 4 +-N had the greatest positive impact on NH 3 , and urease activity and total nitrogen had positive effects on NH 4 +-N. Furthermore, microbial biomass carbon and pH had positive and negative effects on urease activity, respectively, both of which were only related to SOM. At the same time, WFPS had a positive impact on total nitrogen. In summary, no-tillage with total green manure mulching increases maize yield but also increases NH 3 emissions. NH 4 +-N formed by the hydrolysis of urea by soil urease and the conversion of total nitrogen were found to be the main reasons for high NH 3 emissions. In addition, SOM can promote urease activity, increase NH 4 +-N content and NH 3 volatilization by increasing MBC and decreasing soil pH. The current context of food security and global geopolitical crises calls for proactive efforts to seek adaptive strategies for limited resources in agriculture. The production of phosphatic-based fertilisers has caused a substantial depletion of natural phosphorus (P) reserves, raising concerns about price increases due to the growing demand for P. The aim of the study is to assess whether the use of liquid organo-mineral P-complexes can be an adaptive strategy to address the issue of the limited P-fertiliser resource. A complete randomised block design was implemented with three replicates, spanning two contrasting cropping seasons under a Mediterranean climate with reduced tillage and rainfed conditions. The study aimed to assess the response of a durum wheat–maize rotation to various rates of liquid organo-mineral P-complexes (humic-complexed phosphate; HCP) in comparison to granular triple superphosphate (TSP). The evaluation focused on several parameters, including P availability, plant architecture, dry matter accumulation, grain yield and yield components and P use efficiency (PUE) for both durum wheat and maize. The results revealed that applying HCP at a rate of 4 or 8 kg ha−1 increased soil P availability on average by 66% and 144%, respectively, compared to the control (no P-fertilisation), although a significant interaction with the monitoring year emerged. For wheat, applying HCP at a rate of 8 kg ha−1 of P resulted in higher grain yield (+15%), protein content (+0.9%) and P uptake (+48%) than the control on average considering both monitoring years. In the season characterised by favourable rainfall patterns, the application of HCP at 5 or 10 kg ha−1 of P for maize showed similar effects in terms of soil P availability, dry matter accumulation, grain yields and PUE. Conversely, in the season marked by a deficiency in summer precipitation, low PUE for maize was observed for HCP fertilisers, although they remained positive, unlike the case of TSP. Using HCP in conservation agriculture appears promising as an adaptive solution to address P-fertiliser scarcity, especially amid food security challenges and global crises. Evaluating the contribution of diverse nitrogen (N) sources in agricultural systems is pivotal for optimizing sustainable farming practices. While knowledge exists about the roles of various N sources, there's limited comprehensive data on the relative contributions of manure compost, fertilizer, and root residues to subsequent plant uptake. A comprehensive field study was conducted in Shandong Province, China, utilizing 15N labeling techniques to clarify these contributions. Four treatments were established, each incorporating four exogenous nitrogen sources (manure compost + urea + maize root + residual urea) applied concurrently at wheat seeding, with only one source being 15N labeled per treatment. Additional two treatments served as controls, one without 15N labelling and another without manure compost. During a wheat growing season, the N contribution from each individual source to subsequent wheat growth was quantified. Manure contributed 10% of the wheat seed N, while urea contributed 18% and maize root contributed 0.3%. Nitrogen recovery in distinct components of the wheat plant (seeds, straw, and roots) was assessed, revealing urea's superior use efficiency within the total wheat biomass at 55%. In contrast, both manure compost and maize root showed a recovery rate of 29%. Although this study spans only one-year, it offers fresh perspectives on the differential contribution and use efficiency of key N sources under field conditions, emphasizing their role in bolstering crop health and productivity for sustainable agriculture. The crop rotation is a farm-scale management choice that dictates agronomic output, ecological impacts, and farm viability. Rotations have become less diverse recently. Re-diversifying may help agricultural systems meet the growing, dynamic demands from society and challenges from climate change. Using a long-term experiment, we tested whether diversified rotations could a) match the productivity (grain yield) of simplified rotations while b) stabilizing productivity against variable weather in the western U.S. Corn Belt. We identified rotation design choices that drive these productivity-stability dynamics. Although more productive rotations were more susceptible to weather (r = 0.63; p < 0.001), this tradeoff was surmountable (p < 0.001): the corn-oat-winter wheat-soybean (Zea mays L., Avena sativa L., Triticum aestivum L., Glycine max (L.) Merr.) rotation was a) no less productive than the highly unstable, corn-soybean rotation (p = 0.11); and b) only marginally less stable than the most stable rotation (p = 0.06). Crop selection and sequencing were critical to this outcome. High productivity was due to a) overyielding of individual crops in diversified rotations that increased with time; b) sequencing to allow higher-yielding winter crops; and c) beneficial crop legacy effects. Stability was highest in rotations that included crops belonging to more weather-niches (r 2 = 0.67; p < 0.001). Surprisingly, these weather-niches groups did not correspond to traditional categories like cool- vs warm-season crops. Mixing crop species in intercrops often results in yield advantages but the underlying processes are not completely understood. Increased resource capture in intercrops, particularly of light and nutrients, has been frequently demonstrated, but there is less information on the effect of intercropping on the photosynthetic capacity of leaves and on the leaf traits related to photosynthesis. Here we determine whether photosynthetic capacity and associated leaf traits are enhanced in intercropped maize (Zea mays L.), a species frequently used in intercrops. We determined leaf photosynthetic capacity (A 1800) and leaf traits of maize leaves in different canopy layers and at different growth stages in relay strip intercrops with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and in the maize sole crop. We also measured the distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the canopies. Intercropping with wheat or faba bean resulted in larger specific leaf area (SLA; thinner leaves), lower specific leaf nitrogen (SLN), and lower A 1800 of maize leaves during vegetative growth, and differences were larger for maize intercropped with faba bean than wheat, consistent with stronger shading by faba bean than wheat. After the harvest of companion species, maize leaves received more light in the two intercrops than in the sole maize crop, but this did not result in increases in leaf N concentration, SLN, and A 1800. Results indicate that shading and lower leaf N caused by relay intercropping maize with an earlier sown species negatively affected leaf photosynthetic capacity of maize leaves. The yield increase of maize in relay intercrops was not due to a higher leaf photosynthetic capacity. Soils with high organic carbon (SOC) have been shown to enhance crop yields while minimizing climate-induced losses. However, the resilience impacts and mechanisms by which high SOC enhances crop performance have not been fully explored. Here, eight-year rotations of winter wheat and summer maize managed with chemical fertilizer input alone (CF) or with cattle manure (OM) or with peat and vermiculite (PV) were conducted, and various soil properties were measured alongside crop growth, nitrogen (N) uptake, and grain yield, with seasons categorized as dry or normal based on precipitation amounts. The OM and PV treatments increased SOC by 57% and 78% relative to the CF, respectively, and improved soil nutrient availability and the soil quality index. Soil moisture content in the 0–30 cm layer increased by 3.5–26.6%, but was less influenced in the 30–90 cm soil layers. Annual yield of wheat plus maize increased by 13% and 12% in OM and PV compared to the CF, and the yield sustainability index increased by 29% and 17%. Yield gains were more pronounced in dry compared to normal seasons, ranging from 19% to 28% and 12–15% for wheat. At least in part, the relative advantages of OM and PV treatments under drying conditions were associated with accelerated growth and N uptake rate from sowing to stem elongation for wheat and maize. Among the factors influencing yield in the present study, soil moisture exerted the greatest positive total effect on yield. Overall, the results highlight that enhanced SOC resulting from combined application of organic amendments and mineral fertilizer was positively associated with yield by promoting soil quality and water availability, with a more pronounced benefit under water-limited conditions. Crop lodging, either stem breaking/stem bending or root lodging, is a major concern for farmers worldwide. In the present study, meta-QTLs, ortho-MQTLs and candidate genes related to lodging and its associated traits were identified using 836 of the 1269 known QTLs retrieved from 107 QTL mapping studies published during 1998–2022. The study resulted in the identification of 86 MQTLs with an average confidence interval (CI) of 1.66 cM (4.26-fold reduction) as against a CI of > 7.08 cM in the initial QTLs. Out of 86 MQTLs, a subset of 12 MQTLs demonstrated stability and robustness, earning them the title of breeders' MQTLs. These selections were made based on criteria such as the number of initial QTLs involved, small CI, high LOD scores, and PVE values. Furthermore, leveraging synteny and collinearity facilitated the identification of 10 ortho-MQTLs shared between wheat and maize. Further, in silico expression analysis allowed the detection of 53 significantly expressed candidate genes encoding different proteins/products including the following: F-box protein, GDSL lipase/esterases, SANT/Myb domain transcription factor, pectin esterase inhibitor domain, glycoside hydrolase family, protein kinase domain, zinc finger domain, cytochrome P450, UDP-glucuronosyl/UDP-glucosyltransferase, glycosyltransferase 61 etc. In addition, 26 lodging tolerance genes from Arabidopsis, rice, and maize were also utilized to identify 34 wheat homologues in wheat MQTL regions. Among these, three genes TraesCS2D02G256600 (TaEREB114 -2D) , TraesCS7B02G340100 (TaIRX14- 7B), and TraesCS1B02G347600 (TaGA2ox4- 1B) were prioritized for qRT-PCR-based expression analysis in one lodging-tolerant (i.e., WH-1105) and one lodging-susceptible (i.e., WH-1184) variety. When comparing these two varieties, we found higher relative expression levels of these three genes in the second basal internode at the milky endosperm stage of the lodging-tolerant variety. The MQTLs, ortho-MQTLs, and candidate genes (CGs) identified in this study can be utilized for marker-assisted selection to improve lodging tolerance and enhance our understanding of the molecular basis of lodging tolerance in wheat. At the agro-ecosystem scale, a combination of green manure and chemical nitrogen fertilizer improves crop yield but also exacerbates soil CO 2 emissions. However, it is unclear whether reducing nitrogen by reapplying green manure to fields can achieve high crop yields and improve carbon mitigation. This study aims to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of carbon emissions in maize fields under green manure reapplication combined with a reduction in nitrogen. A field experiment comprising five treatments (green manure reapplication combined with traditional nitrogen application (N100), green manure reapplication combined with a reduction in nitrogen of 10% (N90), green manure reapplication combined with a reduction in nitrogen of 20% (N80), green manure reapplication combined with a reduction in nitrogen of 30% (N70), and green manure reapplication combined with a reduction in nitrogen of 40% (N60)) was conducted at an arid oasis region in northwestern China from 2020 to 2022. This study investigated the effects of reducing nitrogen application while reapplying green manure to the field on maize grain yield, soil respiration rate, and carbon emission efficiency (CEE) and analyzed the relationship between soil respiration rate and soil temperature (Ts), soil water content (SWC), and crop biomass accumulation (BA). The N80 treatment significantly reduced soil carbon emissions (CE) but did not reduce maize grain yield, and it showed a significant increase in CEE of 7.7% compared with the N100 treatment. In addition, this system can ensure no reduction in net primary production (NPP), net ecosystem production (NEP), and carbon sequestration (CS) potential compared with N100 and significantly improves the NPP/CE value. Soil temperature and crop biomass significantly correlated with soil respiration, which explained 68.4–72.9% and 84.4–88.8% of the seasonal variation of soil respiration, respectively. However, there was no correlation between soil moisture and soil respiration. Therefore, reducing nitrogen application by 20% while multiple cropping with green manure application after wheat was a suitable nitrogen fertilizer management measure for improving carbon mitigation in arid areas without sacrificing maize yield. Cover crops (CCs) are a recognized best management practice to reduce surface water runoff and nutrient loss from agroecosystems. This 4-yr study was conducted in a tile-terraced field to assess the effects of CCs on nutrient loss compared to without CC (no CC) in a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation. The 3xCCmix (wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), radish (Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. Sativus), and turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. Rapa)) was aerial seeded in soybean at R6 in 2018 and 2020. Cereal rye (Secale cereale) was drill seeded after the corn harvest in 2019 and 2021 (corn-cereal rye-soybean-3xCCmix). Water samples from individual flumes were collected using automated samplers and analyzed for concentrations and loads of nitrate-N (NO 3 -N), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved phosphorus (PO 4 -P), and total suspended solids (TSS). The 3xCCmix and cereal rye had 16% and 12% lower discharge, respectively, than no CC. The 3xCCmix reduced TSS load 50% compared to CC, while cereal rye had no effect. Cover crops reduced NO 3 -N load 20%, 54%, and 68% during the corn, cereal rye, and soybean growing periods, respectively. Over the full rotations, cumulative discharge and nutrient loads were greater during the 2018–20 crop rotation year because of increased precipitation in 2019. The variability in effectiveness of CCs in reducing nutrient losses was likely affected by different climatic and management factors including CC planting and termination dates. A 42-day experiment was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of a stimbiotic (STB) and wheat bran (WB) in broiler chickens receiving diets (DT) based on corn or wheat. A total of 960 Cobb 500 male broiler chicks at zero-day old were allocated to 64 pens with 8 treatments, 8 replicates per treatment, and 15 birds per replicate. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 2 × 2 × 2 factorial, with the factors as diet (corn-soybean meal or wheat-soybean meal), STB (with or without), and WB (0 or 50 g/kg). Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), and mortality-corrected FCR data were collected for the starter (d 0–10), grower (d 10–28), and finisher (d 28–42) phases. Ileal digesta and jejunal tissue were collected on d 18 and 42. Data were analyzed as a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial using a mixed model of JMP. There was no significant 3-way interaction for growth performance and expression of nutrient transporters. There was a significant SB × WB for FCR (P < 0.05) in the grower phase. Stimbiotic supplementation and WB inclusion individually improved (P < 0.05) FCR regardless of cereal type, but this effect was not observed when the two were combined. In the overall phase (d 0–42), birds receiving corn-based diets had higher (P < 0.05) FI and BWG than those receiving wheat-based diets. There was a significant 3-way interaction for ileal digestible energy (IDE) (P < 0.05) and N digestibility (ND) on d 18 and 42 (P < 0.05). There was no effect of STB or WB in corn-based diets, whereas WB inclusion decreased IDE in wheat-based diets, but STB supplementation increased IDE with or without WB. In corn-based diets, WB inclusion increased ND, whereas ND was decreased in wheat-based diets. Supplementation with STB had no effect on ND, but STB increased ND in wheat-based diets with and without WB. Ileal DE was greater (P < 0.05) for wheat- than corn-based diets on d 42. Wheat bran inclusion increased ND in corn-based diets whereas, with STB supplementation, there was no difference in ND with or without WB. There was no difference in ND with or without STB or WB in wheat-based diets. There was a significant STB × DT on the expression of GLUT-1 (P < 0.05). In corn-based diets, STB produced an upward expression of GLUT-1, whereas in wheat-based diets, STB supplementation had no effect. On d 42, stimbiotic supplementation produced upward (P < 0.05) expression of SGLT-1. In conclusion, STB supplementation in wheat- or corn-based diets and with WB inclusion improved energy digestibility. On the other hand, WB inclusion in wheat-based diets decreased nutrient digestibility especially on d 18, thus making room for a positive response to STB supplementation in wheat-based diets compared to the marginal response to STB supplementation observed in corn-based diets. GA 2-oxidases (GA2oxs) are a class of enzymes that inhibit the biosynthesis of bioactive GAs in plants. Although GA2oxs have clear roles in the development and defence responses in Arabidopsis, rice, and wheat, their potential effects on maize remain unclear. This study identified thirteen ZmGA2ox genes in maize and further characterized them using phylogenetic, gene structure, genomic locus, expression pattern analyses and GA content determination. Phylogenetic relationship analysis clearly divided the ZmGA2ox family into three groups—seven in C19-GA2ox class I, three in C19-GA2ox class II, and three in C20-GA2ox class. Evolutionary analysis suggested that ZmGA2ox1;1 and ZmGA2ox1;2 , ZmGA2ox3;1 and ZmGA2ox3;2 , and ZmGA2ox7;1 and ZmGA2ox7;2 are three pairs of segmental duplicated genes. Prediction of cis-regulatory elements in promoters suggested that ZmGA2ox genes were mainly associated with growth, development, hormones, and biotic/abiotic stress. Therefore, their spatial and temporal expression patterns and responses to various stress treatments were analysed on the basis of published RNA-seq data. Moreover, the changes of ZmGA2ox expression in leaves and roots of maize seedlings was detected under salt, alkali, dehydration, and cold stresses by qRT-PCR. The ZmGA2oxs exhibited obvious expression tendencies or characteristics in various organs under different abiotic stresses. The variations in the expression of three ZmGA2ox genes in the C20-GA2ox class in maize seedling roots showed significant regularity and a clear negative correlation with bioactive GA contents under cold and drought conditions, indicating that these three genes might exert key effects on the regulation of GA synthesis and the response to drought and cold stress. Salinity has emerged as a major threat to food security and safety around the globe. The crop production on agricultural lands is squeezing due to aridity, climate change and low quality of irrigation water. The present study investigated the effect of biogenic silicon (Si) sources including wheat straw biochar (BC-ws), cotton stick biochar (BC-cs), rice husk feedstock (RH-fs), and sugarcane bagasse (SB), on the growth of two consecutive maize (Zea mays L.) crops in alkaline calcareous soil. The application of SB increased the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and internal CO 2 concentration by 104, 100, 55, and 16% in maize 1 and 140, 136, 76, and 22% in maize 2 respectively. Maximum yield (g/pot) of cob, straw, and root were remained as 39.5, 110.7, and 23.6 while 39.4, 113.2, and 23.6 in maize 1 and 2 respectively with the application of SB. The concentration of phosphorus (P) in roots, shoots, and cobs was increased by 157, 173, and 78% for maize 1 while 96, 224, and 161% for maize 2 respectively over control by applying SB. The plant cationic ratios (Mg:Na, Ca:Na, K:Na) were maximum in the SB applied treatment in maize 1 and 2. The study concluded that the application of SB on the basis of soluble Si, as a biogenic source, remained the best in alleviating the salt stress and enhancing the growth of maize in rotation. How to plan crop planting under global warming is a key issue in the context of an emerging global food crisis. Although previous studies have utilized crop potential distribution for crop planting strategies, they overlooked the high and stable crop-yielding areas within the potential distribution zone, which hinders the optimal utilization of these areas. Taking China as a case, this study proposed a high and stable yield index based on crop potential yield using a hybrid model at site scale (i.e., establishing the relationship between the observed crop yield and the outputs of process-based LPJ-GUESS model as well as climate variables using the random forest method) and assessed planting suitability of China's main grain crops (i.e., maize, wheat, and rice) under future climate change using the index. According to the results, (1) the determination coefficients between observed and modeled yield in the hybrid models were 0.71, 0.49, and 0.66 for maize, wheat, and rice, respectively, suggesting that the hybrid model had an acceptable performance. Moreover, the hybrid models had much better performance than the LPJ-GUESS model in crop yield simulation at site scale. (2) Compared with the 2001–2020, future average potential yield of three crops in the actual cultivated land would decline in 2081–2100, where the declined areas for maize, wheat, and rice would account for 83.8–89.2 %, 68.2–70.2 %, and 74.2–80.9 % of cultivated land, respectively. (3) High yield and stable yield areas of each crop do not overlap completely spatially, indicating that establishment of the high and stable yield index for crop planting suitability measurement is necessary. Compared with the 2001–2020, the optimal suitability areas of each crop will decrease under future climate change, implying that future climate change will reduce and shift the high and stable yield area of each crop. (4) Spatial overlay between the actual distribution and the optimal suitability area of each crop demonstrates that the optimal suitability area of each crop has not and will not be occupied completely by actual crop planting, suggesting a large available area for the adjustment of future crop planting area. Intercropping has gained widespread adoption among farmers due to its ability to yield higher outputs. The primary reasons behind the yield advantage of intercropping systems are the border effects. Among various factors influencing the inter-species relationship, nitrogen (N) plays a crucial role. However, yield and border effects of wheat/maize intercropping at different N levels have been poorly studied, especially under rainfed conditions with different rainfall year types. The objective of this study was to compare the contribution of different crop strips to yield at different N levels and to explore the impact of different precipitation on crop physiological characteristics and water use of intercropping systems in rainfed areas. A field experiment was conducted between 2019 and 2021 in Yangling, Shaanxi Province, adopting a two-factor design, with the main treatment as planting pattern (sole wheat; sole maize; wheat/maize intercropping), and the secondary treatment as three N levels (0, 180, 300 kg ha−1 for wheat and 0, 235, 360 kg ha−1 for maize). Results showed that, intercropping increased total yield and land productivity, with a land equivalent ratio of 1.05–1.15. The intercropping system led to increased water consumption during crop growth, however, it also exhibited a notable improvement in water use efficiency, with a 5.2–16.9% increase compared to sole wheat cultivation. During the symbiotic period, intercropping wheat showed competitive advantages, resulting in yield increments of 16.4–31.2% over the two-year period. Border row wheat contributed 63.7% of the total production, with the increase in yield mainly attributed to an increase in the number of spikes and 1000-kernel weight. On the other hand, the intercropping maize showed a competitive disadvantage during the symbiotic period. The leaf area index, net photosynthetic rate, and yield of border row maize were comparatively lower than those of inner maize. However, no significant differences were observed between the yield of inner row maize and that of sole maize. After the wheat harvest, the intercropping maize resumed growth. The growth of intercropping maize was constrained by N and moisture conditions. In 2020 (Precipitation: 572.8 mm), the yield of intercropping maize increased by 3.2% compared to sole maize under N2 treatment, but in 2021 (Precipitation: 251.4 mm), the yield of intercropping maize decreased by 1.1%− 4.3%. Wheat/maize intercropping has clear advantages in land use in the Northwest China due to the availability of more resources for wheat/maize intercropping, especially in the border rows of wheat. The recovery of late-sown crops is limited by water and nitrogen, and increasing the water and nitrogen supply of late-sown crops can better play the advantages of intercropping. As maize-based crop rotation systems are essential to ensure global food security, understanding the effect of the preceding crops and the associated management on the subsequent maize is crucial. Here we address this view with a 6-year field experiment in the North China Plain's annual winter wheat and summer maize rotation system. Effects of preceding wheat with three water management (conventional irrigation, Con.W/M; optimized irrigation, Opt.W/M; minimum irrigation, Min.W/M) on maize yield and water consumption are investigated. We find that water management in the preceding wheat crop does not affect the subsequent maize yield but increases the interannual yield variability. Over the six years, an average yield of > 10.7 Mg ha-1 is achieved for maize in the three treatments. The highest coefficient of variation (CV) of yield is observed in Min.W/M (12.0%), while there is no significant difference in CV between Con.W/M and Opt.W/M. The annual water consumption follows a decreasing trend in the order of Con.W/M (357 mm), Opt.W/M (332 mm), and Min.W/M (290 mm), which primarily attribute to variations in initial water storage in the deeper soil profile (below 80 cm). The variation in water storage would be eliminated during the following maize growing stages due to ample rainfall in the temperate continental monsoon climate. The findings show that kernel weight (KW) is the primary determinant (accounting for 55–86%) to the observed variations in maize yield. In the Min.W/M treatment, the interactive effect of killing degree days, growing degree days, maximum temperature, and solar radiation accounts for 85% of the variation observed in KW. Feed formulation using apparent metabolizable energy (AME) corrected to zero nitrogen retention (AMEn) is widely used by poultry nutritionists. Most available tabulated data are from experiments using adult cockerels or growing broilers. Specific values are rarely available for laying hens. A study was conducted to evaluate AME, AMEn, and AMEs (AME adjusted to 50% nitrogen retention) of corn, soybean meal (SBM) and wheat in laying hens using the reference diet substitution and regression methods. Forty eight 42-wk-old Hy-Line Brown hens were used, 2 birds per cage with six replicates per diet. Test diets contained 30% test ingredient (as is basis) and 65.7% reference diet (as is basis) with limestone, other minerals, vitamins, and amino acids held constant across the reference and test diets. Using the reference diet substitution method, AME values obtained for corn, SBM, and wheat were 3,791, 2,621, and 3,565 kcal/kg (DM), respectively. The corresponding AMEn values were 3,722, 2,496, and 3,479 kcal/kg (DM), and AMEs were 3,784, 2,835, and 3,562 kcal/kg (DM), respectively. Calculation of AME, AMEn, and AMEs of ingredients using regression based on the inclusion rate (DM) of dietary ingredients and reference diet gave identical values to those obtained by the reference diet substitution method. In addition, the measured AMEn values of ingredients using laying hens in this study were close to those calculated from proximate composition using the European Union prediction equation based on adult cockerels. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of age and supplemental xylanase in corn- or wheat-based diets on cecal volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations of Ross × Ross 708 male broilers during weekly intervals from 14 to 42 d of age. Day-old chicks (1,500) were randomly distributed into 60 floor pens (25 chicks/pen; 0.078 m2/bird) and fed 1 of 4 dietary treatments (TRT) throughout the starter (1 to 14 d of age), grower (15 to 28 d of age), and finisher (29 to 42 d of age) phases with 15 replicates per TRT. Dietary TRT consisted of a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 diet types (corn- or wheat-based) and 2 xylanase inclusions (0 or 16,000 BXU/kg) as the main factors. At 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 d of age, cecal contents were collected (4 birds/pen) for VFA analysis. Main effects of cereal grain source (P < 0.05) affected propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, valeric, and isocaproic acid concentrations at 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 d of age. Broilers fed corn-based diets had higher (P < 0.05) propionic, isobutyric, isovaleric, valeric, and isocaproic concentrations than those fed wheat-based diets from 14 to 42 d of age. However, broilers fed wheat-based diets had higher (P < 0.05) butyric acid concentrations at 28, 35, and 42 d of age compared with those fed corn-based diets. Individual and total VFA concentrations increased (P < 0.05) linearly from 14 to 42 d of age. Age and cereal grain interacted (P < 0.05) to affect propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acid concentrations. These results indicate that broiler cecal VFA concentrations are influenced by cereal grain source and age. In contrast, supplemental xylanase inconsistently influenced broiler cecal VFA concentrations. Therefore, future research evaluating factors affecting supplemental xylanase and cecal VFA production in broilers is warranted. Additionally, research investigating cereal grain source effects on cecal microflora development and fermentative patterns may be beneficial for optimizing cecal VFA production in broilers. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding diets varying in cereal grain source and supplemental xylanase concentrations on growth performance and cecal volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations of Ross × Ross 708 male broilers from 1 to 40 d of age. A total of 1,536 day-old chicks were randomly distributed into 64 floor pens (24 chicks/pen; 0.08 m2/bird) and fed 1 of 8 dietary treatments (TRT) with 8 replicates per TRT. Experimental TRT were of either corn- (TRT 1 to 4) or wheat-based (TRT 5 to 8) origins. The 4 dietary TRT for each cereal grain source consisted of a positive control (PC) reference diet and 3 reduced AMEn diets (AMEn reduced 66 kcal/kg below PC) with supplemental xylanase at either 0 (negative control), 12,000, or 24,000 BXU/kg. Birds and feed were weighed at 1, 14, 26, and 40 d of age to determine BW gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio. At 26 and 40 d of age, cecal contents were collected and pooled per pen (7 birds/pen; 5 replicate pens/TRT) for VFA concentrations. No TRT differences (P > 0.05) in cumulative growth performance were observed. Likewise, no TRT differences (P > 0.05) in acetic or total VFA concentrations were observed at 26 or 40 d of age. However, cereal grain source (P < 0.05) influenced propionic, isobutyric, butyric, and isovaleric concentrations at 26 and 40 d of age with birds receiving the corn-based diets having higher (P < 0.05) cecal propionic, isobutyric, and isovaleric concentrations, and lower (P < 0.05) butyric acid concentrations than those fed the wheat-based diets. These results indicate that dietary cereal grain source may influence individual cecal VFA concentrations. However, supplemental xylanase did not affect broiler growth performance or cecal VFA concentrations. A theoretical basis for optimizing mitigation and adaptation to future climate change can be obtained by determining the carbon balance and their control mechanism in agroecosystems. To better understand summer maize (Zea mays L.)/winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) agroecosystems in dry semi-humid carbon balance mechanism, we conducted an in-depth analysis of three-year (2019.6–2022.6) seasonal dynamics of carbon fluxes and their driving factors in summer maize/winter wheat cropland in the Guanzhong Plain combined with path analysis. The results showed that net radiation (R n) was the main direct controlling factor of the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in the summer maize growing season, followed by leaf area index (LAI). However, LAI was the main factor controlling the seasonal variation of NEE in the winter wheat growing season, followed by R n. Furthermore, LAI was the dominant direct driving factor for the gross primary productivity (GPP) in the summer maize and winter wheat growing seasons. In addition, LAI was the dominant driving factor for the total ecosystem respiration (TER) in the summer maize season, while R n (indirect effect) and LAI (direct effect) were the main controlling factors of TER in the winter wheat season. The NEE values of the summer maize system, winter wheat system, and summer maize/winter wheat system in the study area were from 119 to 221, − 601 to − 595, and − 433 to − 291 g C m − 2 , respectively (the net biological production (NBP) were − 709 to − 437, 220–303, and − 496 and − 260 g C m − 2 , respectively). Notably, the average carbon emission rate of the summer maize/winter wheat agroecosystem in the Guanzhong Plain, considering the carbon output at harvest is 386.2 g C m − 2 year − 1 . Nitrogen (N) is the key nutrient for crop growth in most agricultural systems, but excessive N fertilizer applications have led to very large ammonia (NH 3) and greenhouse gas (GHG), especially nitrous oxide (N 2 O), emissions, resulting in severe air pollution and making a major contribution to global warming. To clarify the effects of improved N management on NH 3 and N 2 O emissions and crop production, a 2-year field experiment was carried out in a maize-wheat rotation in the North China Plain (NCP), testing four optimized N management practices including reducing the fertilizer (urea) N rate and using N 'synergists' with the fertilizer. NH 3 emissions were significantly reduced only by the urease inhibitor (UI) LIMUS®, with an average reduction of 66.9 % relative to emissions from the untreated urea. At the same N rate, N 2 O emissions were reduced by 30.8–76.7 % by all the synergists (UI, a nitrification inhibitor DMPP (NI) and urea with a bacterial agent (UB)), and crop yields were improved by 14.4 % and 15.2 % under the UI and UB treatments, respectively. An 15N tracer experiment showed that using N synergists decreased the total N loss by 10.9–58.7 %, and significantly increased the recovery efficiency of N (RE N) by 16.9–44.8 % over the whole rotation. Reducing the N rate reduced the GWP and yield-scaled GWP (GHGI) by 10.6 % and 8.4 %, respectively. Using the N synergists, GHGI was significantly decreased by 19.2–26.7 % (P < 0.05), while GWP was reduced by 13.2–18.1 % only by the application of DMPP or LIMUS®. Overall, the study showed that reducing N 2 O and NH 3 emissions is important for increasing N utilization and mitigating global warming. Reducing N rate and using synergists can address the joint problems of environmental pollution and agricultural efficiency. Trichothecenes are mycotoxins generated by Fusarium species that are toxic to humans and animals and frequently contaminate cereals. Herein, we present an UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS method using one-step pretreatment for simultaneous detection of 16 type A and B trichothecenes in maize and wheat. A calibration strategy based on natural isotopic distribution was adopted and validated to replace traditional time-consuming and laborious multipoint external calibration curves. Various conditions influencing the method were studied. The recoveries of spiked analytes at three different concentrations ranged from 74.2% to 105.3% and the inter-day relative standard deviations were 0.5–15.6%. The limits of quantitation were 4.4–108.8 μg/kg. Moreover, the current methodology was applied to the evaluation of type A and B trichothecenes present in samples from major wheat production areas in China. This study provides a facile methodology for type A and B trichothecenes analysis and presents promising applications for exposure risk assessment of trichothecenes in cereals. A long-term experiment was used, established in 1987 testing (i) conventional tillage with lime (lime-CT) and control (control-CT), (ii) NT with lime (lime-NT) and control (control-NT), and (iii) occasional tillage with lime (lime-OT). The NPK fertilization was the same for all treatments. The accumulated grain yield and P use efficiency of 56 crops between 1987 and 2019 were evaluated. In 2019, soil samples were collected in the 0–5, 5–10, and 10–20 cm layers and submitted to a sequential chemical fractionation of P, P indexes, and soil acidity parameters. The results reveal that is necessary to correct acidity to increase crop yields and P use efficiency, regardless of the soil management used. This increase is enhanced when soil acidity correction by liming is combined with the use of conservation systems such as NT. Furthermore, after liming with incorporation, liming can be done on the soil surface, without the need to repeat the operation of lime incorporation, ensuring high efficiency of P use even after more than four decades. • Maize and wheat are proposed for diversification, but irrigation advice is limited. • Soil moisture content was above or near drained upper limit for depths below 0.5 m. • A significant effect of irrigation on yield was observed for maize only, in one year. • One irrigation, in addition to a starter irrigation, generally is sufficient to grow a crop. • Low-input maize cultivation is not always profitable and low fertilizer rates increase risk of negative returns. Further efforts are needed to combat poverty and agricultural productivity problems in the delta region of Bangladesh. Sustainable intensification of crop production through irrigation and production of cash crops such as maize and wheat might be a promising option to increase income and diversify food production. Only limited research has however been conducted on the potential of using surface water from canals as an irrigation source for maize and wheat production in the delta region. To better understand the contribution of shallow groundwater to crop production and number of irrigations needed for maize and wheat in this unique coastal environment, we conducted multi-locational trials on farmers' fields over three rabi seasons. In addition to soil moisture and salinity, we recorded the depth and salinity of the shallow water table throughout these experiments. Maize in particular requires considerable capital investment for seeds, fertilizer, irrigation and labor. Although farmers express wide interest in maize – which can be sold as a profitable cash crop into Bangladesh's expanding poultry feed industry – many of them are reluctant to invest in fertilizer because of the high entry costs. We therefore also investigated the profitability of growing maize under low and high (recommended) fertilizer regimens. Volumetric soil moisture at sowing and during the grain filling phase or at maturity indicated that there is ample supply of water in the profile. Most measurements were above the drained upper limit (DUL). We attributed this to the generally shallow water table depths, which never exceeded 2.75 m at any location, but generally stayed between 1–2 m depth throughout the season. The region's soil texture classes (clay loams, silt loams and silty clay loams) are all conducive for capillary rise of water into the rooting zone. Consequently, irrigation had a significant effect on maize yield in the driest winter only, whereas for wheat, it had no effect. The key for a successful maize and wheat production in the delta region of Bangladesh is to ensure a good crop establishment, which can be achieved with a starter and an additional irrigation at crown root initiation for wheat and at V6-8 for maize. Maize however is not always profitable. Compared to low fertilizer rates, higher rates reduced losses in low yielding site-years and increased profits in high-yielding site years. This indicates that it is advisable for farmers not to reduce fertilizer rates. The low availability of phytate phosphorus (Phy-P) from cereals for monogastric livestock can be enhanced using feed technological processes. The present objective was to investigate the effect of soaking of grains in lactic acid (LA) on the Phy-P disappearance and chemical composition in wheat and corn grains and whether changes in the nutrient profiles occurred when cereals were dried and stored for four weeks. Wheat, corn and a 50:50 mixture of both grains were soaked in 0, 10 and 25 g/kg LA (LA0, LA10, and LA25) for 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h. Thereafter, samples were either directly analyzed for their nutrient content or stored for 4 weeks at 21 °C until analyses. The effect of LA on the nutrient profiles in wheat, corn and, wheat-corn mixture was more evident with increasing LA concentration and soaking time, with the greatest effect with LA25 after 48 h of incubation. Soaking the cereals in LA25 for 48 h decreased (P < 0.05) the total phosphorus content by 9% across grains and decreased the Phy-P content by 24, 30 and 25% in corn, wheat and wheat-corn mix, respectively (P < 0.05), thereby correspondingly increasing the available phosphorus content. Phytase activity in corn grain represented one-tenth of the activity in wheat. End-product inhibition was indicated by the reduced phytase activity in wheat and wheat-corn mix after 48 h of soaking (P < 0.05). Moreover, crude ash and neutral detergent fiber decreased after soaking in LA, with the greatest change observed with LA25 and 48 h of treatment in LA. Although the LA treatment did not markedly affect the total starch content, soaking in LA25 increased the resistant starch content in wheat by 51%, whereas it decreased by 52 and 19% in corn and wheat-corn mixture, respectively (P < 0.05). Drying and storing the samples for four weeks increased the content of dry matter and crude ash, whereas neutral-detergent fiber, acid-detergent fiber, and non-resistant starch were reduced in the LA-treated grains after storage (P < 0.05). Storage also enhanced the Phy-P disappearance in LA-treated wheat and wheat-corn mix, thereby further increasing the available phosphorus fraction. In conclusion, soaking of grains in LA25 for 48 h demonstrated to be an effective strategy to improve the phytate-P availability in wheat and wheat-corn mix. Abstract Ladybeetles are promising contributors of biological control services in agricultural landscapes, potentially providing significant economic gains in agricultural production. In northern China, ladybeetles are the most common predators in the annual double-crop rotation system, where the dominant crops are wheat in the spring and maize and cotton in the summer. Land-use features at the landscape level affect ladybeetle populations in a number of ways, and our previous studies have estimated the effects of landscape composition on ladybeetles abundance in wheat and cotton fields in northern China. However, these landscape effects on ladybeetle abundance in maize remain insufficiently documented in this specific agro-ecosystem. We assessed the relationships between ladybeetle abundance and landscape composition at four spatial scales (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 km) in a summer maize system at the whorl stage (the main period for ladybeetle colonization). We found that both semi-natural habitats (woodlots and grasslands) and vegetation around water bodies increased the abundance of ladybeetles in maize fields, and maize area played a dilution effect on ladybeetle abundance in this crop. These non-crop habitats might serve as source of emigrants that disperse to maize fields. The smallest scale (0.5 km) studied was the most predictive spatial scale in this colonization period for ladybeetles. Propylaea japonica , the dominant ladybeetle, showed response to landscape variables in a similar way as the whole ladybeetle population did. These findings suggest that leaving some non-crop habitats and reducing human disturbance to this vegetation within a landscape will enhance ladybeetle abundance in maize fields. Consistent with our previous studies in wheat and cotton fields in the same system, maintaining the continuity in time and space of functional habitats was essential for the persistence of ladybeetle populations within the landscape. Abstract The challenge to increase agricultural production with a minimum environmental impact requires to reach the maximum efficiency in the capture and use of resources such as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), water, and nitrogen (N). Such requisites are encompassed in the ecological intensification (EI) concept. The aims of this work were to evaluate at a crop sequence level: i) crops yields, ii) water and radiation productivity and its components, i.e. resource capture and resource use efficiency, and iii) partial factor productivity of applied N (PFPN), partial nutrient balance for N (PNB), N uptake and N utilization efficiency of a two-year, three-crop sequence (wheat [ Triticum aestivum L.]/soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] double crop – maize [ Zea mays L.]) carried-out under EI principles in comparison with the same crop sequence under current farmer practices (FP) in two contrasting locations of the Argentinean Pampas, i.e. Paraná (-31°50′; -60°31′) at the northern Pampas and Balcarce (-37°45′, -58°18′) at the southern Pampas. Experiments were carried-out during four consecutive years, covering two complete cycles of the crop sequence. For the accumulated grain production of the crop sequence, EI management outyielded FP from 13 to 42%, depending on environmental conditions. Maize yield accounted for most of the variation (41–64%) of the accumulated grain yield of crop sequence, whether in EI as in FP. Average grain yield differences between EI and FP treatments were 274 g m−2 for maize, 69 g m−2 for wheat and -2 g m−2 for soybean. Water and radiation productivities of the sequence were higher in EI than in FP (26% for water and 17% for radiation; P < 0.0001), mainly because of increases in resource use efficiencies. EI reduced partial factor productivity of applied N, but improved partial nutrient balance for N as compared with FP. These reductions in partial factor productivity of applied N were less than proportional than the increases in N rate. Moreover, in spite of the higher N rate in EI respect to FP, N utilization efficiency (N ut E), i.e. grain per unit N uptake, was higher across all situations in EI. Our results showed that the challenge to obtain high grain yields by increasing N rate in a medium-input system could be achieved even with an increase in N ut E. Grain yields improvements, and increases in radiation and water productivity were reached by applying a set of agronomic practices that included improved genetics, crop and fertilizer N management englobed under EI concept. Abstract To evaluate long-term effects of biochar addition and straw return (SR) on N 2 O fluxes in wheat-maize rotation system, a 2-year field experiment following a 7-year biochar addition and SR was investigated in an intensively managed agricultural soil in the North China Plain (NCP). Four treatments were included: 1) no biochar addition (CK); 2) biochar treatment with 4.5 t ha−1 yr−1 (C1); 3) biochar treatment with 9.0 t ha−1 yr−1 (C2); and 4) all the wheat/maize straw return (SR). The results showed the annual cumulative N 2 O emissions from C1 treatment were increased by 15.9–16.5%, while C2 treatment suppressed the annual cumulative N 2 O emissions by 22.8–26.3%. In comparison, straw return suppressed N 2 O emissions by 13.4–43.6% in the wheat season but increased N 2 O emissions remarkably by 45.3–53.9% in the maize season. Biochar addition enhanced the copies of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS , and nosZ genes, while straw return decreased the copies of AOB, nirK , nirS , and nosZ genes at the high N 2 O emission period in the maize season. The production of N 2 O in the maize season was mainly driven by the AOB and nosZ genes, and by AOB gene in the wheat season. Highlights • The concentration of vitamin varied significantly among different ingredients. • There was a significant difference in vitamin content of the same ingredient among different growing regions. • Corn and that of co-products were rich in β-carotene and vitamin E and oilseed co-products were rich in choline. Abstract The concentration of vitamins was determined in 143 samples of 13 feed ingredients commonly used in pig diets. The ingredients included corn and four corn co-products (corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), corn gluten meal, corn germ meal and corn gluten feed), wheat and two wheat co-products (wheat bran and wheat shorts), and five oilseed meals (soybean meal, rapeseed meal, peanut meal, sunflower seed meal and cottonseed meal). For corn and corn co-products, the content of β-carotene in corn gluten meal (11.10 mg/kg) was much greater than that in corn (1.62 mg/kg) and other corn products (2.16, 0.36 or 0.56 mg/kg, P < 0.01), whereas the content of choline was the least (80.04 mg/kg) in corn, and corn gluten feed had the greatest concentration of choline (1525.18 mg/kg). The greatest concentration of vitamin E was in corn DDGS (39.24 mg/kg). The concentration of niacin in corn was much lower than that in its co-products (3.68 vs. 23.23, 29.42, 36.46 and 52.65 mg/kg, P < 0.01). The contents of β-carotene were very low in wheat, wheat co-products and oilseed meals. The concentration of most of vitamins were greatest in wheat bran and least in wheat except that wheat shorts contained lower choline niacin (P < 0.01). For oilseed meal, the content of vitamin E was much greater (P < 0.01) in rapeseed meal (8.66 mg/kg) and cottonseed meal (10.57 mg/kg) than that in soybean meal (2.42 mg/kg), peanut meal (0.67 mg/kg) and sunflower seed meal (1.04 mg/kg). The concentration of niacin was low in cottonseed meal (9.15 mg/kg), and greatest in sunflower seed meal (183.91 mg/kg). The rapeseed meal (2276.32 mg/kg) had the greatest concentration of choline, while sunflower seed meal had the least choline (399.96 mg/kg, P < 0.01). Compared numerically, corn and its co-products were rich in β-carotene and vitamin E and oilseed co-products were rich in choline. These results indicate that the variability in concentration of vitamins among feed ingredients is very great. Coffee is globally one of the most widely consumed beverages. Due to the high economic importance for the countries that produce, export and import it, its purity and detection of external impurities have been constant concern. In some cases, visual inspection is unreliable in roasted ground coffee because of resemblance in color and the texture of the cheapest fillers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of employing Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for determination of coffee adulteration with chickpea, corn and wheat. For this purpose, LIBS spectra was evaluated with chemometrics methods for classification and quantification of the adulteration ratio. Coefficient of determination and limit of detection values for chickpea, corn and wheat adulteration with Coffee arabica were found as 0.996, 0.995, 0.995 and 0.56%, 0.52% and 0.45%, respectively. Abstract Whether crop intercropping can affect the uptake of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) by plant roots from soils is unclear. In this study, we compare the PAE uptake by plant roots between the wheat/maize intercropping and the wheat and maize monocropping in a field work. We show that the PAE bioconcentration factors of wheat and maize roots are remarkably higher under wheat/maize intercropping than under monocropping, indicating that intercropping may significantly increase the biouptake of PAEs as compared to monocropping. The wheat/maize intercropping can increase the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) in soils by increasing the abundance of redox-active functional groups in WEOM. The ETC-enhanced WEOM may be an important reason for facilitating the reduction of ferric iron [Fe(III)] minerals to soluble ferrous iron [Fe(II)] by acting as electron shuttle, thus leading to the release of the PAEs originally occluded in Fe(III) minerals into soil pore water. The increased bioavailable PAEs distributed in the soil pore water under wheat/maize intercropping eventually result in the increase in the uptake of PAEs by plant roots from soils. Despite conservation agriculture (CA) is being promoted as a climate resilient technology, limited information is available on its impacts on N storage within soil aggregates vis a vis global warming potential (GWP) under tropical agro-ecosystems. Hence, this study assessed the effects of a medium-term (5-years) CA on total soil N (TSN) changes in bulk soils and aggregates, N 2 O and CO 2 emission, GWP and total C fixed in soils under maize ( Zea mays L.)- wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) system on the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). The treatments were: conventional tillage (CT), zero tillage (ZT) with planting on permanent narrow beds (PNB), PNB with residue (PNB + R), ZT with planting on permanent broad beds (PBB), PBB with residue (PBB + R), ZT on flat land/plains without crop residue (ZT) and with crop residue retention (ZR + R). Soil samples were collected after five years of a maize–wheat system and TSN in bulk soils and their aggregates of the 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil layers were measured along with N 2 O and CO 2 emissions during the fifth year (2014–15).The soils under PBB + Rhad 37 and 9% more macro-aggregate-and micro-aggregate-associated N concentrations in topsoil (0–5 cm layer) than CT (248 and 299 kg N ha −1 ). However, topsoil soil aggregation and aggregate-associated N contents of PNB + R and ZT + R were similar to CT plots. The dehydrogenase and fluorescein diacetate activities and TSN, microbial biomass N, NO 3 -N and NH 4 -N concentrations were also highest in PBB + R plots in topsoil. The topsoil dehydrogenase activity was significantly correlated (r = 0.426, n = 21, p < 0.05) with CO 2 emission and with N 2 O emission (r = 0.770, n = 21, P < 0.01) during wheat (2014–15). However, topsoil FDA activities and MBN concentrations were only significantly correlated with N 2 O emission in wheat. In the maize–wheat system, highest N 2 O emission was observed in PNB + R plots and least in CT plots. But, PBB + R and PNB + R plots had similar CO 2 emissions to CT plots in both crops. Despite GWP of ZT + R and PBB + R plots in the maize-wheat system were ∼5% higher than CT, greenhouse gas (GHG) intensities in the CT, PBB + R and ZT + R plots were similar. Thus, PBB + R practice is a better management alternative for soil N improvement (and a reduced fertilizer N dose could be adopted in future) than CT since this practice also had 36% and 8.2% higher biomass productivities of maize and wheat, respectively in the maize-wheat cropping system and similar GHG intensity to CT plots. Highlights • We hypothesised that yield penalties produced by heat stress would be modulated by N availability. • We tested the hypothesis in field experiments with heat stress applied as a treatment in maize and wheat crops. • Yield loss due to heat was higher under high than low N availability in both crops. • Increased sensitivity to heat under high N was evident as a percentage of the unheated control as well. Deleterious effects of heat on crop yields are well documented and the occurrence of heat stresses will likely be a major constraint to achieving increased yields of major crops. Thus, agronomic and genetic strategies for increased resilience to high temperatures will be necessary. Much of the work done on this area has been focused to identify genetic sources of increased resilience and much less has been done on the crop ecology side. Nitrogen (N) fertilization is within the most common management practices used in cereal production, however, there have been limited efforts to elucidate to what degree the level of soil fertility may affect the magnitude of the high temperature effect on crop yield. The likely interaction may be relevant for designing more appropriate fertilization strategies. We conducted different studies on maize (2009–2012) and wheat (2012–2013), always under field conditions, to determine whether the availability of N may be responsible for the magnitude of the yield penalty imposed by heat stress during reproductive phases (i.e. when heat waves are more likely). We concluded that sensitivity to heat stress increased with increasing N availability and speculated that moderate N stress might produce in the crop plants a sort of acclimation to reduce sensitivity to other stresses. Fertilisation recommendations in the future may need to balance the yielding benefits of high N availability with the detrimental effect of increasing sensitivity to heat stress. Precision agriculture has under delivered partially because it has been based on technologies focused on increasing the resolution of spatial variation in soil and yield and more recently automation, with less effort in incorporating the physiological principles of crop responses to environmental variation. Here we show how a whole-farm precision agriculture approach accounting for the physiological processes underlying the relationship between environment and crop development, growth and yield (“zone management”), bridge yield gaps, increased farmer profit and reduced risk, on San Lorenzo, a 5000 ha dryland farm in the southern Pampas. The farm grows wheat and barley in winter, and soybean, maize, and sunflower in summer; winter grain cereal/double-cropped soybean is a main activity. Four management zones were defined: i) Zone 1, shallow soils (< 0.8 m) with low frost risk and deep water table (> 3 m below surface); ii) Zone 2, intermediate soil depth (0.8 to 1.8 m) with low frost risk and deep water table; iii) Zone 3, deep soils (> 1.8 m) with low frost risk and deep water table; and iv) Zone 4, deep soils (> 1.8 m) with high frost risk and water table < 3 m from surface. Crop choice and practices were tailored to each zone based on ecophysiological principles including the relative sensitivity of crop growth and yield to soil depth, frost and water supply during the species-specific critical window for yield determination; for example, maize is the most sensitive crop to stress during its critical window, therefore it was excluded from Zone 1 and 2, with a substantial reduction of risk and improvement of farm output (amount of grains that can be produced in a hectare) and profit. In comparison with neighboring farms, San Lorenzo had a 54% higher farm output, and 46% higher gross margin (or 112 US$ ha −1  year −1 ); this was driven by a higher net income (244 US$ ha −1 ) despite increased total costs (132 US$ ha −1 ). The influence of grinding size of the main cereal of the diet on production and egg quality traits was studied in brown hens from 33 to 65 wk of age. The experiment was completely randomized with 6 treatments arranged as a 3 × 2 factorial with 3 main cereals (barley, corn, and wheat) and 2 grinding size of the cereal (6 and 10 mm screen). Each treatment was replicated 11 times (10 hens/replicate). Diets were isonutritive and contained 2,740 kcal/kg AMEn and 16.8% CP. Egg production, ADFI, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined by period (4 wk) and for the entire experiment. Egg quality traits (percentage of undergrades, Haugh units, thickness, strength, color of the shell, and proportion of albumen, yolk, and shell) were measured also by period. No interactions between main cereal and grinding size of the main cereal of the diet were observed for any of the traits studied. Feed intake, egg production, and BW gain were not affected by diet or grinding size. Eggs were heavier (P < 0.01) in hens fed barley than in hens fed corn or wheat, probably because of the higher fat content of the barley diets. Also, FCR tended to improve in hens fed barley compared with hens fed corn or wheat (P = 0.07). Diet did not affect any of the egg quality traits studied. In summary, barley and wheat conveniently supplemented with enzymes, can be used in substitution of corn at levels of up to 55% in diets for laying hens, without any adverse effect on egg production or egg quality traits. Moreover, the substitution of corn by a combination of barley and supplemental fat increased egg size. Consequently, the inclusion of one or other cereal in the diet will depend primarily on their relative cost. Two of the most important agricultural practices aimed at improving soil properties are crop rotations and no-tillage, yet relatively few studies have assessed their long-term impacts on crop yields and soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of tillage and crop rotation on soil GHG emissions and yields following 15 years of treatment implementation in a long-term cropping systems experiment in Illinois, USA. The experimental design was a split-plot RCBD with crop rotation as the main plot: (continuous corn [ Zea mays L.] (CCC), corn-soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (CS), continuous soybean (SSS), and corn-soybean-wheat [ Triticum aestivum L.] (CSW); with each phase of each crop rotation present every year) and tillage as the subplot: chisel tillage (T) and no-tillage (NT). Tillage increased the yields of corn and soybean. Tillage and crop rotation had no effect on methane (CH 4 ) emissions (p = 0.4738 and p = 0.8494 respectively) and only rotation had an effect on cumulative carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) (p = 0.0137). However, their interaction affected cumulative nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions significantly (p = 0.0960); N 2 O emissions from tilled CCC were the greatest at 6.9 kg-N ha −1 -yr −1 ; while emissions from NT CCC (4.0 kg-N ha −1 -yr −1 ) were not different than both T CS or NT CS (3.6 and 3.3 kg-N ha −1− yr −1 , respectively). Utilizing just a CS crop rotation increased corn yields by around 20% while reducing N 2 O emissions by around 35%; soybean yields were 7% greater and N 2 O emissions were not affected. Therefore results from this long-term study indicate that a CS rotation has the ability to increase yields and reduce GHG emissions compared to either CCC or SSS alone, yet moving to a CSW rotation did not further increase yields or reduce N 2 O emissions. The objective of these studies was to evaluate the impact of dietary muramidase (MUR) on endogenous amino acids (AA) losses and digestibility of nutrients in wheat and corn-based broiler diets. In experiment 1, the effect of dietary MUR on the flow of endogenous AA (EAA) at the jejunum and terminal ileum of broilers were assessed using either the nitrogen (N) free diet method (NFD) or the highly digestible protein diet method (HDP ; 100 g casein/kg diet). Sialic acid and muramic acid concentrations were measured in the jejunal content. In experiment 2, a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments with 2 base grains (wheat or corn), with low or high metabolizable energy (ME) levels, and without or with MUR supplementation was implemented. All diets contained phytase, xylanase, and cellulase. Apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of dry matter (DM), protein (CP), amino acids (AA), crude fat, and energy, as well as the apparent total tract metabolizability (ATTM) of DM, CP, and gross energy (GE) were determined. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA was obtained by correcting AID values for basal ileal EAA obtained from chicks fed with NFD or HDP in experiment 1, jejunal EAA flow of all AA was higher (P < 0.001) compared to the ileum, but this effect was method dependent. Jejunal, but not ileal, EAA flow measured with HDP was higher compared to NFD, as well as sialic acid (P < 0.001) and muramic acid (P < 0.004) concentrations. Muramidase inclusion had no effect on basal EAA flow, independently of the segment and the method used. In experiment 2, dietary MUR supplementation increased the AID of CP (P < 0.05), all AA, and tended (P = 0.07) to increase the AID of GE, independently of the cereal type used. However, ATTM of DM and GE, but not CP, increased with MUR inclusion compared with the control treatments, especially in wheat and low ME diets (P < 0.05). The Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) in north-west (NW) India are facing a severe decline in ground water due to prevalent rice-based cropping systems. To combat this issue, conservation agriculture (CA) with an alternative crop/s, such as maize, is being promoted. Recently, surface drip fertigation has also been evaluated as a viable option to address low-nutrient use efficiency and water scarcity problems for cereals. While the individual benefits of CA and sub-surface drip (SSD) irrigation on water economy are well-established, information regarding their combined effect in cereal-based systems is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a two-year field experiment in maize, under an ongoing CA-based maize-wheat system, to evaluate the complementarity of CA with SSD irrigation through two technological interventions–– CA+ (residue retained CA + SSD), PCA+ (partial CA without residue + SSD) – at different N rates (0, 120 and 150 kg N ha-1) in comparison to traditional furrow irrigated (FI) CA and conventional tillage (CT) at 120 kg N ha-1. Our results showed that CA+ had the highest grain yield (8.2 t ha-1), followed by PCA+ (8.1 t ha-1). The grain yield under CA+ at 150 kg N ha-1 was 27% and 30% higher than CA and CT, respectively. Even at the same N level (120 kg N ha-1), CA+ outperformed CA and CT by 16% and 18%, respectively. The physiological performance of maize also revealed that CA+ based plots with 120 kg N ha-1 had 12% and 3% higher photosynthesis rate at knee-high and silking, respectively compared to FI-CA and CT. Overall, compared to the FI-CA and CT, SSD-based CA+ and PCA+ saved 54% irrigation water and increased water productivity (WP) by more than twice. Similarly, a greater number of split N application through fertigation in PCA+ and CA+ increased agronomic nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and recover efficiency by 8–19% and 14–25%, respectively. Net returns from PCA+ and CA+ at 150 kg N ha-1 were significantly higher by US$ 491 and 456, respectively than the FI-CA and CT treatments. Therefore, CA coupled with SSD provided tangible benefits in terms of yield, irrigation water saving, WP, NUE and profitability. Estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) and yield over cropland is essential for water resources management and food security. Particularly the estimation at long-term and regional scales still needs to be investigated. In this study, a remotely sensed and water-carbon coupled model was combined with a process-based crop growth simulation method to simultaneously estimate ET and yield. The developed model was tested for two of the most important crops (wheat and maize) with years of observations. Leaf area index determined by various remote sensing indices and individually calibrated parameters for wheat and maize were considered to improve crop ET and gross primary production (GPP) estimates. The parameters well reflected different physiological properties that C4 maize has a smaller stomatal conductance coefficient and a larger sensitivity in response to initial light than C3 wheat. Comparing with 20 years of measurements, the root mean square error (RMSE) of ET and GPP for winter wheat was 0.57 mm d−1 and 1.65 g C m−2 d−1, and for maize were 0.80 mm d−1 and 2.92 g C m−2 d−1, respectively. Besides, crop growth simulation including biomass accumulation and allocation agreed well with the measurements. Coefficient of determination was mostly larger than 0.66, and RMSE of yield was 554.7 and 1346.6 kg hm−2 for wheat and maize, respectively. Finally, the spatiotemporal crop water productivity (WP) of winter wheat and summer maize in the North China Plain during 2001–2018 were quantified. The increased WP of winter wheat while the larger WP of maize than that of wheat were discovered. Soil water deficits limit the photosynthetic productivity of crops, resulting in reduced yields. However, the effects of soil water stress on leaf gas exchange parameters, actual quantum efficiency (Φ PSII), photosynthetic capacity (maximum electron transfer rate ETRmax, maximum photosynthetic rate An max , maximum carboxylation rate Vc max25) and environmental parameters, such as photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), vapour pressure deficit (VPD), remains unclear. Especially, the dynamic responses of crops with different canopy structure types and phenological stages to water stress needs to be further clarified. In this study, we conducted a field experiment using wheat and maize under complete rainfall isolation to study the effects of coupled water stress and environmental factors on leaf gas exchange processes and photosynthetic capacity. Our results showed that the Φ PSII - PAR relationship in the wheat leaves(a C 3 plant) was more sensitive to water stress than was that in the maize leaves (a C 4 plant) and significantly differed with phenological stage. The coupling of water stress with VPD had a more pronounced effect on the gas exchange parameters (net photosynthetic rate (An), stomatal conductance (g sw), transpiration efficiency (TE), intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi)) than coupling with PAR, especially for wheat, where the coupling effect of soil water content (SWC) with VPD was more pronounced as the degree of water stress increased. The SWC status did not significantly alter the wheat An -PAR relationship, in contrast to that in maize, wherein a strong effect of SWC on the An -PAR relationship was observed. Water stress had a more pronounced limiting effect on ETR max in wheat than in maize. An max showed a weaker relationship with SWC in both wheat and maize, whereas Vc max25 exhibited a stronger relationship with SWC. Additionally, the physiological response process should take into account the differences between phenological periods. Development of semi-dwarf wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rice (Oryza sativa) led to increased yields and agronomic efficiencies with less lodging. While these short-stature cereals have become common in global crop production, commercial maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids remain tall. There is no information currently available on plant N uptake or yield responses to N timing for short stature maize hybrids. We tested three hypotheses on short-stature and tall maize hybrids 1) short-stature maize hybrids would have similar yield response to in-season N application compared to tall hybrids, 2) short-stature maize hybrids would have similar dry matter and N uptake patterns to tall hybrids, and 3) there would be significant partitioning differences between short-stature and tall hybrids in dry matter and N within the plants at multiple growth stages. In ten side-by-side field trials across eight site-years in the Midwestern USA, we tested the yield response and underlying nitrogen physiology of short-stature maize hybrids and tall comparators to split-rate N application. We show that split-rate application of 50% of the total N at mid-vegetative stages (V6) averaged 0.24 t ha−1 more grain yield across 10 field trials (positive yield response in 6 out of 10 trials) compared to a single 100% up-front N application, with the same pattern for short-stature and tall hybrids. In both hybrid statures, V6 N applications showed more frequent improvement in grain yield than V12 N applications. Total N uptake at maturity was not different between short-stature hybrids and their tall counterparts (p = 0.62). N partitioning differed between short-stature and tall hybrids; leaves in short-stature hybrids had 5% higher N concentration and 13% more N content in early vegetative development, stalks had 18–27% less dry matter and 5–25% less N content, depending on growth stage, while R1 ears averaged 18% more dry matter and N accumulation (p < 0.10 in all cases). At maturity short-stature hybrids had 4% higher harvest index and 3% higher N harvest index (p < 0.10). Based on these results, we expect that N management recommendations in short-stature maize hybrids would be similar to their tall counterparts, but that short stature mitigates logistical risk by providing more flexibility for in-season N applications. Soil CO 2 emissions respond differently to different tillage practices. However, limited information is available regarding the impact of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) on soil CO 2 emissions and the primary controlling factors or processes. The goal of this study is to derive the relationship of soil CO 2 emissions with soil physicochemical properties from differently tilled soils in a typical winter wheat summer maize rotation system. We hypothesized that soil tillage practices would impact the soil carbon cycle by modifying soil physical and chemical properties, which would in turn affect the soil CO 2 emissions. The study was conducted from 2018 to 2022 with two tillage practices using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. A leading international real-time monitoring system in situ was used to collect soil CO 2 emission data. Cumulative soil CO 2 emissions were reduced by 28.7% in maize and increased by 9.0% in wheat under NT as compared to CT. On an annual scale, the cumulative CO 2 emissions were decreased by 20.5% in NT as compared to CT. Maize season accounted for 70% 78% of soil CO 2 emissions. NT improved the aboveground biomass by 7.74% and 6.44%, and grain yields by 10.2% and 4.49% for maize and wheat, respectively. The soil CO 2 emission intensity of maize was reduced by 35.9% under NT as compared to CT. No significant differences were discovered under the two tillage practices for soil CO 2 emission intensity of wheat. For maize, NT increased the bulk density, subsequently decreasing soil temperature and increasing soil moisture. NT also led to higher soil organic carbon and total nitrogen content, ultimately resulting in a significant reduction in soil CO 2 emissions. For wheat, NT increased soil bulk density, further increasing soil moisture and lowering soil pH. NT thus resulted in lower soil organic carbon and total nitrogen content, ultimately leading to enhanced soil CO 2 emissions. Some of these observations might not be consistent with theoretical predictions, which indicated that the unconsidered factors of actual field conditions might have much significant effects. Overall, NT can be extensively used as an eco-friendly cropland tillage practice based on its positive effects of reducing CO 2 emissions and increasing crop yields. The authentication of traditional herbal medicines in powder form is of great significance, as they are always of high values but vulnerable to adulteration. Based on the distinct fluorescence of protein tryptophan, phenolic acids and flavonoids, front-face synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (FFSFS) was applied for the fast and non-invasive authentication of Panax notoginseng powder (PP) adulterated with the powder of rhizoma curcumae (CP), maize flour (MF) and whole wheat flour (WF). For either single or multiple adulterants in the range of 5–40% w /w, prediction models were built based on the combination of unfolded total synchronous fluorescence spectra and partial least square (PLS) regression, and were validated by both five-fold cross-validation and external validation. The constructed PLS2 models simultaneously predicted the contents of multiple adulterants in PP and gave suitable results, with most of the determination coefficients of prediction (R p 2) >0.9, the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) no >4% and residual predictive deviation (RPD) >2. The limits of detections (LODs) were 12.0, 9.1 and 7.6% for CP, MF and WF, respectively. All the relative prediction errors for simulated blind samples were between −22% and + 23%. FFSFS offers a novel alternative to the authentication of powdered herbal plants. Winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.)-fallow (WF) remains a prominent cropping system throughout the Central Great Plains despite documentation confirming the inefficiency of precipitation storage during the summer fallow period. Wheat yield is greatly influenced by available soil water at planting, and that quantity is influenced by cropping intensity, tillage intensity, crop grown prior to winter wheat planting, and length of the non-crop period prior to winter wheat planting. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of cropping system intensity, tillage, and crop prior to wheat planting on available soil water at planting and the probabilities of having certain minimum amounts of available soil water at wheat planting. Available soil water was measured at wheat planting for nine cropping systems varying in fallow frequency, tillage intensity, and crop prior to wheat over a 25-yr period at Akron, CO. Available soil water at wheat planting was found to be greatest (average 218 mm) for no-tillage (NT) and reduced-tillage (RT) systems in which a fallow period of 12–14 months preceded wheat planting. The lowest amounts of available soil water at wheat planting were found for the continuously cropped rotations (average 100 mm). The cumulative probability exceedance graphs of available soil water at planting fell into three groupings: 1) the five rotations that had a NT or RT fallow period prior to the next wheat crop; 2) the WF (conventional till) rotation; 3) the three rotations with either pea ( Pisum sativum L.) or proso millet ( Panicum miliaceum L.) prior to the next wheat crop. These graphs provide a valuable decision support tool for helping farmers assess risk in moving from a WF cropping system to a system of greater cropping intensity and diversity. The Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India is dominated with rice − wheat cropping system that occupies almost 10.5 million ha area. The sustainability of rice-wheat system is under threat due to numerous water-, nutrients-, weeds- and environment-related problems, mainly, due to the cultivation of rice. Suitable crop and soil management practices with a bias to conservation agriculture (CA) that can sustain soil and environmental health as well as improve crop and water productivity, are required for the Indian IGP. Maize can be a viable alternative to rice and a potential driver for diversification of rice-wheat system. The acreage of maize is on the increase in conventional and conservation agriculture-based cereal systems of India in recent years. Therefore, a field experiment, involving a maize ( Zea mays L.)-wheat cropping system was undertaken on a sandy clay loam soil for three years (2010–11 to 2012-13) in New Delhi to evaluate the impacts of CA on crop and water productivity, profitability and soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation. There were five CA-based treatments in first year, and two treatments were introduced in second year (2011-12) onwards. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In all the residue retention plots, wheat residue was retained in maize crop and maize residue was retained in wheat crop under zero till conditions. Results showed that the plots under permanent broad bed with residue (PBB + R) and without residue (PBB) resulted in ∼29 and ∼26% higher maize grain yield, respectively than conventional tillage (CT) (2.6 t ha −1 ), but wheat grain yields were comparable in all the treatments in first year. Maize grain yield in second year under PBB + R and zero tillage with residue (ZT + R) were 55 and 43% higher than CT plots (2.8 t ha −1 ). Three-year mean maize yields due to PBB + R and permanent narrow bed with residue (PNB + R) were 28 and 15% higher than that in CT plots (3.3 t ha −1 ). The PBB + R resulted in 11% higher two-year mean water productivity in maize than PBB (∼without residue), but both these treatments were comparable in this regard in wheat. The ZT + R plots resulted in 14% and 22% higher two-year mean water productivity, respectively in maize and wheat than ZT plots. Overall, the plots under PBB + R had 57% and 19% higher mean water productivities in maize and wheat, respectively compared with CT plots. Again, the PBB + R plots gave 12% higher two-year mean net returns compared with CT plots. With regard to net returns, the plots under permanent narrow bed with and without residue (PNB + R; PNB) were inferior to PBB, PBB + R, ZT and ZT + R plots. Retention of both-season crop residues could significantly improve SOC concentration in surface (0–5 cm) soil. The PBB + R resulted in highest SOC pool at 0–30 cm soil layer, which was significantly higher than that in CT. This system showed maximum carbon sequestration potential. Thus, this CA practice, which involves PBB + R is superior to other practice. This would save water through higher water-use efficiency, and lead to accumulation of more carbon in soil with higher sequestration potential, besides giving sustainable production through maize-wheat system over the years. This can be adopted across the IGP regions of India, where irrigated rice-wheat system is in practice, and in similar agro-ecologies of the tropics and sub-tropics under irrigated conditions. The long-term understanding of the carbon budget of cropping systems needs to consider varying meteorological conditions, site/soil conditions, crop selection, and management decisions. On the Canadian Prairies, a variety of crops are used in yearly rotation, often not repeating the same crop within a 3-year period. We measured net ecosystem production (NEP) in two cropping systems in southern Manitoba, Canada, for the 2006–2016 period. One system had continuous annual crops, whereas the other had a perennial phase for 4 years. NEP was calculated using the flux-gradient method, where the carbon dioxide gradient was measured with a tunable-diode laser analyser and the transfer coefficient was based on momentum similarity theory with inputs from sonic anemometer-thermometers. NEP varied from −100 (source) to +300 (sink) g C m −2 y −1 among four adjacent 4-ha fields and 10 years, depending on annual crop (corn, faba, spring wheat, barley, rapeseed, soybean) and environmental conditions. There was no period of 3 years or greater when NEP in the continuous annual crop rotation was different from carbon neutral. Inserting a 4-year perennial phase of an alfalfa/grass mix created a statistically significant carbon sink for NEP (P = 0.04), but the perennial period itself was carbon neutral. Enhanced ecosystem respiration was observed following termination of the perennial crop. Harvest practices varied from no harvest (in the establishment year of the perennial crop), grain removal only, grain + straw removal, and straight cutting of green biomass for silage. Once harvest removals were included, 3 of the 4 fields were carbon neutral, but one annual field had net carbon losses for some periods. Ecosystem respiration averaged about twice as large as harvest removals. Net carbon (mean ±S.E.) over the 11-year period for the annual cropping system (−78 ± 51 g C m −2 y −1 ) was not different from the annual-perennial system (−48 ± 47 g C m −2 y −1 ). An experiment was conducted to study the effect of cereal (corn, wheat, barley and sorghum) and supplemental enzyme (a mono-component xylanase) in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement. A 2-phase feeding program (0 to 21 and 21 to 42 d) was used and 4 iso-caloric, iso-nitrogenous diets were formulated containing corn, wheat, barley, or sorghum as the sole cereal. Diets based on each cereal were fed without or with supplemental xylanase (16,000 BXU/kg) to 8 replicate pens of 10 chicks (5 male : 5 female, Cobb 500) each. Growth performance was recorded at 21 or 42 d posthatch. Excreta was quantitatively collected from 18 to 21 and 38 to 41 d for the measurement of the total tract retention of dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and apparent metabolizable energy (AME). Ileal digestible energy (IDE) was measured at the end of the study (42 d posthatch) using titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. For the overall 42 d period, birds fed barley-based diets had lower feed intake (P < 0.05), lower body weight (P < 0.05) and converted feed into gain less efficiently (P < 0.05) compared with the diets based on corn, wheat or sorghum. Xylanase supplementation improved weight gain in diets based on corn, wheat, and sorghum with the exception of barley-based diets (cereal × xylanase interaction, P < 0.05). Xylanase improved the overall feed conversion ratio (1.885 vs. 1.939; P < 0.05) with the effect being independent of the cereal type. The N retention of barley-based diets was lower (P < 0.05) compared with the other cereals, while xylanase improved N retention (P < 0.05) regardless of the cereal type. NDF digestibility differed (P < 0.05) across cereal (barley > wheat > corn > sorghum) and was improved (P < 0.05) by xylanase supplementation. A significant cereal x xylanase interaction (P < 0.05) was observed for energy measurements, where xylanase improved IDE of the corn-based diet, and AME of corn- and wheat-based diets. This study investigated the physical properties of maize (MS) and wheat (WS) starches derivatized with 5-(4,6-dichlorotriazinyl)aminofluorescein (model cross-linking system) to have the same overall fluorescence intensity on starch molecules, but reacted either more uniformly throughout granules (UD) or more at granule surfaces (SD). Both MS and WS derivatives had lower swelling powers (SP) at 90 °C than their respective native starches. The UD derivatives had lower SP (90 °C) and greater retrogradation enthalpies than did SD derivatives, consistent with their lower peak and higher setback pasting viscosities. Also, SD starches were less soluble and retained a greater degree of granular integrity than UD starches in time-lapse, hot-stage light microscopy studies (50–95 °C), likely due to a greater concentration of cross-links at the granule surface. The results confirm that derivatization patterns impact the physical properties of modified starches. Thus, varying derivatization patterns can be a strategy to tailor modified starch properties. No-tillage of summer maize after the harvest of winter wheat is the main agricultural practice on the Huang-Huai-Hai (HHH) Plain of China. However, long-term no-tillage in the absence of deep tillage practices affects soil properties, and this effect is not beneficial for the growth and yield production of summer maize. Field experiments were conducted in 2016 in two agricultural sub-zones (Luancheng and Guoyang) in the HHH Plain. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of deep vertical rotary tillage (DVRT), compared to no-tillage with strip subsoiling (NTSS), on dry matter accumulation (DMA) and yield formation. DVRT significantly reduced the soil bulk density of the top soil layer (0–40 cm), especially for the lime concretion black soil in the Guoyang experimental site. Compared with NTSS, the soil water content in the 20–60 cm soil layer was increased under the condition of DVRT. DVRT also significantly increased root DMA in the 0–30 cm soil layer in Luancheng and in the 0–40 cm soil layer in Guoyang. The total shoot DMA, seed DMA, and harvest index of DVRT were significantly higher than those of NTSS, primarily due to a significant increase in post-anthesis DMA. In addition, DVRT increased the maximum and mean grain filling rate and thus significantly increased the maximum grain weight at harvest. Compared with NTSS, DVRT significantly increased grain yield by 21.3% and 27.8% under the plant density of 6.75 pl m −2 and 9 pl m −2 , respectively, in Luancheng and it increased by 12.3% in Guoyang. The present results indicate that DVRT can be used as a deep tillage practice to improve soil properties and grain yield of summer maize, and this may provide guidance regarding the requirements to cope with a diversity of deep tillage machines and develop sustainable agriculture in the HHH Plain of China.
