Our capability to accurately predict at the local scale the morphological changes in a mountain river affected by a severe flood is currently limited. Given the importance of including geomorphological hazards in flood risk evaluation, some improvements in this direction are required. In fact, on the basis of the controlling factors typically considered in the literature, that are the unit stream power (ω pk) and the confinement index (CI), a relatively broad spectrum of width ratios (WR = ratio between channel width after a flood and channel width before a flood) occurring in response to major floods is commonly observed in streams. We extended previous research focused on parameters that influence the morphological response of a channel to a severe flood by investigating the role played by the type of sediment transport process that occurs in a mountain river. In particular, we explored whether a relationship exists between debris flood (i.e. a condition characterised by extremely high bedload) and intense channel widening. The case study was the Cordevole River (the Dolomites, Italy) and four of its tributaries, which were affected by the severe flooding induced by the Vaia storm in October 2018. WR was determined at the sub-reach scale, and ω pk was calculated with consideration for the flood peak discharge ascertained via hydrological modeling. Despite the significant relationships found among WR, ω pk and CI, 21 sub-reaches (out of 144) of the studied stream network widened intensely reaching a WR higher than approximately 4, often to a substantially larger extent than predicted by statistical models. Such sub-reaches were certainly or probably affected by debris floods, leading us to infer that debris floods can induce widening processes that are more intense than those occurring in response to water flows. Having said that, debris floods do not automatically imply very intense widening. In addition to hydraulic and morphological constraints, the sediment transport processes possibly taking place at a sub-reach of a mountain river should be regarded as another driver of channel modifications during high-magnitude hydrological events. • Intense widening occurred along mountain rivers in response to a large flood. • Different types of fluid gravity flow drive various morphological channel responses. • Debris flood can induce more intense widening than that caused by water flow. The investigation of coarse sediment transport in wide mountain streams is very challenging because of limitations that affect the adoption of direct and indirect field monitoring techniques. Such river type represents then a stream typology for which quantitative knowledge of coarse sediment mobility, dynamics and fluxes is poor. This study uses tracer particles and a virtual velocity approach to gain insights about sediment mobility and coarse bed material transport in a wide mountain stream. Monitoring at the study area was conducted by tagging two types of tracer clasts, installing scour chains, and collecting data on water levels, transport processes, particle travel distances, and active layers over a period of 19 months and five transporting floods in the Tegnas Torrent (the Dolomites, Italy). Bed sediment was mobilized during a limited number of hydrological events (i.e. 6 to 9 per year), taking place in 50 to 400 h and inducing a total coarse sediment flux of about 1200 to 1400 m3 yr−1. The mobilization of coarse particles forming the streambed begins in response to a dimensionless shear stress (τ* c = 0.018) that is lower than thresholds commonly reported in the literature for mountain rivers and the estimated unit bed material transport was remarkably higher compared with those obtained in other mountain streams or gravel-bed rivers. The high mobility of streambed material can be related to the availability of fresh and unstructured sediment transported and deposited in the active channel by a high-magnitude event that occurred a few months before monitoring was conducted in this work, suggesting that sediment fluxes in a stream recently affected by a large flood could be considerably higher than those normally expected in a specific context. Finally, despite the existence of some application constraints, the experiment generated satisfactory results as regards the applicability of the virtual velocity approach in investigations of this stream type. The periodic removal of deposited sediment in Alpine artificial reservoirs can be carried out through the flushing technique, in which the bottom outlets of the dam are opened to let water flow through the gates, eroding, re-suspending and transporting the sediment downstream. However, this reservoir sediment management strategy normally generates marked variation both in the flow rate and in the Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) in the river reaches downstream of the dam and may produce negative effects on the riverine ecosystems and biotic communities, especially on fish. In particular, the alteration of river hydraulic parameters (i.e., water depth and flow velocity) combined with excessive turbidity values (i.e., high SSC values) may lead to a possible worsening of habitat suitability for fish, increasing animal stress. The existing known literature provides useful tools to model the effects of the varied river hydraulic characteristics and the increased fine sediment load, but separately. Due to the simultaneous increase of river flow and SSC, it would instead be advisable to combine these two parameters to obtain a comprehensive and representative fish habitat modelling during flushing events. Therefore, the present work aims to propose an innovative methodology for the European grayling (Thymallus thymallus, L. 1758) habitat modelling during sediment removal from an artificial reservoir, in order to minimize the ecological effects while optimizing reservoir sediment management. With the aim of generalizing our results, we considered two river reaches with different morphologies located in South Tyrol (NE Italy), respectively 0.8 km and 18 km downstream the Rio di Pusteria reservoir, two life stages of our model organism, grayling, a typical rheophilic freshwater fish species inhabiting the studied river, and three possible volumes of flushed sediment. Results showed that habitat suitability for spawning and juvenile grayling tended to decrease with increasing flow and SSC for each of the fish life stage considered. However, interestingly, it was preferable to increase the water outflow from the dam to reduce the flushing duration when considering high volumes of trapped sediment. Abstract: Occupation of the coast has significantly increased in recent decades, mostly due to a greater demand for recreation and tourism. Today, erosion threatens many human-made structures and activities, requiring an integrated approach for the understanding of coastal dynamics and identification of alternatives to associated problems. This study investigates a 64km-long coastal physiographic unit in the northern microtidal littoral of Tuscany (Italy). Vertical aerial photographs and direct field surveys were used to retrieve changes in shoreline position over 1938–1997 and 1997–2005 time intervals. Significant beach accretion was observed during the first period updrift of Carrara (84m) and Viareggio (280m) harbours and at Marina di Pietrasanta (100m), whereas severe erosion occurred downcoast of Carrara harbour (−130m, at Marina dei Ronchi) and on the northern side of Arno river mouth (−400m). Similar trends were observed between 1997 and 2005; beach slope between the 1997 shoreline position and the closure depth correlated well with the distribution of erosion/accretion patterns from the 1938–1997 period (slopes were lower in eroded areas than at sites under accretion). Longshore distribution of erosion/accretion patterns was controlled by coastal compartmentalisation. Three of the main littoral cells were mostly formed by natural limits (i.e., Punta Bianca promontory, Marina di Pietrasanta, the Arno river mouth and the port of Livorno). Several sub-cells were created within these cells due to the introduction of human-made structures (such as Carrara and Viareggio harbours), which formed artificial fixed limits that allowed the transport of sediments (exclusively fines) in one direction only. Results will help improve the understanding of coastal processes and manage littoral sediment transport in a sustainable manner. This will reduce the need for structural interventions, such as breakwaters and groynes, which in the past decades prevented coastal retreat at local scale but shifted erosion downdrift, leading to degradation of the investigated area and requiring continuous maintenance. Abstract: Large gravel-bed braided rivers show a highly dynamic evolution, where even moderate flow pulses can produce significant morphological adjustment. An estimation of network variations is needed by river authorities as well as by ecologists for better managing river ecosystems. However, few field investigations have been performed to measure the effect of unsteady discharges in braided rivers. In this paper we report on the morphological changes induced by six different floods in a 1-km-long reach of the Tagliamento River, Italy. Topographic surveys were performed after each significant flood, and an automatic digital camera continuously monitored the planimetric configuration. Repeated measurements of cross section profiles allowed the quantification of the transported sediments volume and, in particular, provided a basis to estimate the percentage of the floodplain subject to morphological evolution. Data analysis showed a good relationship between peak flow level, active width, and mean bed level changes. Similarly, lateral channel shifting is likely to increase for larger floods. Monitoring of a range of discharges up to bankfull conditions revealed a fundamental difference between flow pulses (events on the average occurring one or more times per year) and flood pulses (with a return period larger than two years). The morphological evolution in the former case is mainly limited to a few active branches and is locally driven by bank erosion at the bend apex. On the other hand, larger floods induce a complete reworking of the network configuration, where bifurcations and confluences play a crucial role. Single morphological units (like branches, nodes, bars) are no longer recognizable after this type of event. Braided rivers are therefore characterized by the occurrence of two different spatial and temporal scales that force the ecosystem dynamics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study investigates sediment mobility in a large gravel-bed river (Tagliamento River, northeastern Italy). Field data were used to identify the morphological effectiveness of a range of flows (floods with recurrence interval <1 to 3.5 year) and for a detailed analysis of the partial transport condition. The analyses were carried out on three cross sections where a number of areas representative of different morphological units (main and secondary channels, low and high bars, islands) were painted. Grain size of the painted area was measured using a photographic method. Monitoring of bed mobility during the study period supplied new photographs of the painted areas, measurements of size and travel distance of the mobilized particles, and estimate of flow depth after each flood event. Our analyses have shown that with dimensionless shear stress around 0.073 (17 N m− 2), the morphological effect over the painted areas was primarily partial transport; while with stresses >0.1 (25 N m− 2), the bed experienced full mobility, i.e., all the painted particles were transported or totally buried. Full sediment mobility was observed on lower morphological units (i.e., main and secondary channels) under floods with very high frequency (RI <1 y), whereas on the low bars full mobility occurred under floods with a recurrence interval slightly >1 year. Instead, fine deposition and partial transport conditions were observed on the higher bars even after the largest of the monitored floods (RI =3.5 y). The analysis of the partial transport condition relies on more than 3500 measurements of particle travel distance (travel distances range from a few centimetres up to 22 m). The transported particles were generally finer than the painted sediments, and the analysis of the sediment transport ratio revealed that partial transport occurred under equal-mobility conditions for particles finer than 32 mm and under size-selective mobility for coarser fractions. This appears to be corroborated (for D <32 mm) by the insensitiveness of particle transport distance to particle sizes, even if the exponent (≈1) of the relationship between the dimensionless shear stress and the maximum transported diameter would suggest that all fractions are transported under equal-mobility conditions. Abstract: Among the causes of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DGSD), the most important is relief energy, which is closely related to the intensity of the active tectonic deformations, either at the regional scale or at the scale of a single active fault. We analyzed some examples of DGSD from the Eastern border of the Fucino basin, in the Central Apennines, where extensional tectonics has been active since the late Pliocene. Photogeological and field geomorphological analysis was performed to identify landforms typically associated with DGSD, such as counterslope scarps, double crests, trenches, and bulging slopes. These features are located on a mountain range at less than 1 km from the causative fault of the 1915 Avezzano earthquake. We used the SBAS Differential SAR Interferometry technique to measure the slow movements of the surface, and calculated differential vertical and horizontal ground velocities of 2–4 mm yr−1 during the period spanning from 1992 to 2001. The quantitative information on the kinematics of the deformation provided some inferences on the different processes responsible for the evolution of the observed DGSD. The displacement time series shows non-linear deformation trends at some locations, possibly correlated with a strong meteorological event. We speculate that DGSD in this area are normally subject to slow deformation, and that sudden slip along sliding surfaces (observed in excavations) may sporadically be triggered off by extreme meteorological or seismic events. The alteration of sediment transport regime represents one of the key factors controlling the response of fluvial systems to human impacts. Additional research efforts are required to define sound cause-effect relationships between the human pressures and the morphodynamic responses of sediment-starved gravel-bed rivers. This work deals with the evolution of the Parma River, a large Italian gravel-bed river affected over the last 160 year by multiple anthropogenic disturbances (i.e., land-use changes, in-channel mining and, more recently, the construction of a detention basin), which strongly limited the sediment availability to the high-plain portion of its course. The data collected allowed us to reconstruct the history of the impacts, the river morphological evolutionary trajectory, the sedimentological characteristics of the bed, and to estimate, leveraging a morphological approach, the variation in coarse sediment regime over the most recent period. After the cessation of intense in-channel mining in 1990s, the study sector located upstream from the detention basin shifted from a degrading (i.e., narrowing and incising) to a recovery phase, characterized by a mean coarse transport of 15,000–31,000 m3yr−1. These results demonstrate that the in-channel mining was the most impactful historical pressure acting on the river, and that a channel preserving some natural characteristics and passing from a condition of sediment-starvation to one of increasing sediment availability can recover an active morphodynamics within a short time period. The downstream sector was greatly affected by the reduction of sediment transfer that occurred in the 2000s caused by the construction of a detention basin. Its degradation continued over the most recent period and the coarse transport is currently very low (up to about 3000 m3yr−1 4 km downstream from the basin). This sector is characterized at the present by a morphodynamics defined as "slack", a condition induced by the complete evacuation of the mobile channel sediments, leading to extremely low bed material mobility and transport, and, consequently, to morphological degradation up to the achievement of a new quasi-equilibrium. We hypothesized that such an extreme state of alteration is relatively limited in space, affecting a gravel-bed river only at the reach scale in response to multiple overlapped impacts or because of an extremely severe perturbation (i.e., reduction) of the sediment availability and dynamics. • Human-induced sediment starvation causes alteration of gravel-bed river morphodynamics. • High armouring and low bed material load characterize a sediment-starved channel. • Increasing sediment availability can lead to a recovery of channel morphodynamics. • Multiple overlapped impacts can induce extreme morphodynamic alterations.
