This work deals with fibrous biocomposites prepared by using nettle and poly(lactic acid) fibers and employing carding and compression-molding processes. The role of carding process in determining the tensile strength of the biocomposites was analyzed. The tensile, bending and impact properties of the biocomposites were found to increase initially with the increase of nettle fiber content till 50 wt% and decrease afterwards. The thermogravimetric analysis inferred that the thermal stability of the biocomposites increased with the increase of nettle fiber content. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the biocomposites exhibited high storage modulus, low loss modulus, and low damping factor. Further, the biocomposites exhibited excellent biodegradability and their biodegradability increased with the increase of nettle fiber content. Overall, the biocomposite prepared with equal weight proportion of nettle and poly(lactic acid) showed high potential for automotive dashboard panel application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural fibers are not as rigid as glass or carbon fibers. During composites extrusion and injection molding, they tend to bend and twist in the polymeric matrix, thus resulting in fiber waviness and decreased mechanical properties of natural fiber composites. The most widely used models for the estimation of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and elastic modulus, which consider the fiber aspect ratio and mechanical properties of the fiber and matrix, do not consider these important features. In order to account for fiber waviness, an effective fiber length is proposed in this paper. The undulation of the fibers is approximated with a sinusoidal arc along with a calculated new length. The proposed correction factor depends on the wavelength and amplitude of the wave approximating the fiber. To verify this method, blends of polylactic acid (PLA) and polycarbonate (PC) (prepared with and without an interchange reactions catalyst) with addition to various percentages of cellulosic fibers (5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) have been prepared and characterized. It has been demonstrated that by considering the corrected length values, it is possible to predict the mechanical properties and the effective reinforcement attained in the composites by using the most widely used models. This study investigated mechanical properties of biocomposites developed from recycled polylactic acid (PLA) from packaging industry and treated cellulosic fibers from pulp and paper solid waste. Microwave and enzymatic treatments were used for extraction and surface modification of hydrophilic cellulosic fibers. Enzymatic treatment was specifically performed for activation of hydroxyl groups and improvement of adhesion between matrix and fibers including controlling the length of cellulosic fibers with size reduction of around 50% (142 and 127 μm for primary and mixed biosolids, respectively) as compared to microwave treatment. Microwave treatment produced cellulosic fibers of 293 and 341 μm, for primary and mixed biosolids, respectively. Mechanical properties of biocomposites with 2% (w/w) of treated cellulosic fibers (Young's Modulus 887.83 MPa with tensile strain at breakpoint of 7.22%, tensile stress at yield 41.35 MPa) was enhanced in comparison to the recycled PLA (Young's Modulus 644.47 ± 30.086 MPa with tensile strain at breakpoint of 6.01 ± 0.83%, tensile stress at yield of 29.49 ± 3.64 MPa). Scanning electron microscopy revealed size reduction of cellulosic fibers. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed strong mechanical properties of novel biocomposites. Disposable containers made of non-biodegradable polymers are considered as one of the most prevalent environmental pollutants. It is very important and desirable to make fully biodegradable disposable containers for food packaging that does not endanger the health of consumers. In this research, fully biodegradable polymer composites were prepared by melt mixing of polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and natural polymers including corn starch and wheat straw, and their physical and mechanical properties were evaluated. For this purpose, by conducting experiments according to the optimal custom mixture design of the response surface methodology, the effect of 3 independent variables including the concentration of the PLA and PBS biopolymers blend (50/50% w/w) (CBB) in the range of 30–70, the concentration of corn starch (CCS) in the range of 30–60 and the concentration of wheat straw (CWS) in the range of 0–8 wt percentage of biocomposite on the dependent variables including the elastic modulus (EM), elongation at break (EB), impact strength (IS) and equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of the biocomposite sheet were investigated. According to the results of this research, with the increase in the concentration of corn starch and wheat straw in the studied range, the EM and EMC of the biocomposite increased, while its EB and IS decreased. According to the results obtained from optimizing the effects of independent variables on the physicomechanical properties of the biocomposite sheet, the optimal values predicted by the models for CBB, CCS and CWS were 48.2 wt%, 45.4 wt%, and 6.4 wt%, respectively and predicted values for EM, EB, IS and EMC were 80.8 MPa, 11.4%, 2 kJ/m2 and 4.1%, respectively. Biodegradable fiber-reinforced biocomposites from steam-exploded coconut fibers and polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) plastic were developed in this study. Biocomposite filaments and samples were produced using a commercial-scale screw extruder and a 3D printer, respectively. In-depth mechanical and thermal analyses were also performed. The results showed that the tensile strengths of PLA mixed with 3% coconut fiber (PLA97/F3) and 6% coconut fiber (PLA94/F6) decreased by approximately 22% and 23%, respectively, compared to the 64% reduction of that of the original PLA after four-week storage. The bending modulus of the PLA/fiber composite was better than that of the original PLA (21–29% higher), whereas a 5–8% improvement was observed for the PLA/PBS/fiber composites. The impact strengths of PLA97/F3 and PLA77/PBS20/F3 were approximately 8.5% and 7.4% higher than those of the original PLA and PLA/PBS, respectively. During the degradation test, both PLA97/F3 and PLA77/PBS20/F3 exhibited higher tensile strengths than the original materials. Finally, this research presents encouraging results for the production of biodegradable fiber-reinforced biocomposites that are applicable to 3D printing platforms. Environmental awareness of the global waste problem has driven the development of new green composites made from either renewable or biodegradable materials. Among the variety of available green composites, natural composites based on poly-lactic acid (PLA) have shown noteworthy performance due to their short degradation time after disposal, good strength, and ease of processing by conventional methods. In particular, green composites manufactured with PLA matrix reinforced with Manicaria Saccifera fabric (MF) display mechanical properties that have shown to be very competitive compared with similar materials. In this study, the tensile properties of a green composite of PLA reinforced with MF are optimized by using a Taguchi method approach. The processing parameters, fabric chemical treatment parameters, compression molding parameters, and fiber content are analyzed simultaneously to yield the optimum biocomposite properties. The predicted optimum parameters are experimentally verified. Tensile tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis are used. Abstract: Natural fibers have recently become attractive to researchers, engineers and scientists as an alternative reinforcement for fiber reinforced polymer composites. This paper is focused on the tensile properties of natural fiber reinforced polylactic acid composites. The untreated and flexible epoxy treated bamboo fiber, vetiver grass fiber and coconut fiber were used as reinforcement for PLA biocomposites. The stiffness of untreated biocomposites increased significantly with increasing of fiber content. However, the tensile strength decreased with increasing of fiber content. The flexible epoxy surface treatment reduced the stiffness of all composites while it considerably increased tensile strength when compared against the untreated composites. In addition, it can be seen that the effects of flexible epoxy treated on the tensile strength improvement were dependent upon the type of natural fiber. The tensile strength of bamboo fiber and coconut fiber reinforced PLA composites were significantly improved by the flexible epoxy surface treatment. Unlike the other combinations, vetiver grass fiber reinforced PLA composite showed less improvement in tensile strength when comparing with other natural fibers. Abstract: Over the last few years, intensive research has been devoted to the exploitation of “green products” based on natural resources for both matrices and as reinforcements in composite systems. The mechanical properties of reinforced biocomposites, such as flax/polylactic acid (PLA), are largely governed by interfacial properties between the two constituents apart from their intrinsic properties. Although many papers indirectly demonstrate the importance of optimising the interface between these two polymers, the exact nature of the interaction between the natural fibre and the polymeric matrix has not been clearly investigated on a fundamental level and is presently a major technological limitation of these materials. This work presents the first direct study of adhesion forces, by colloidal force microscopy, between smooth PLA films representing the polymer matrix, and a microbead of cellulose that mimic the cellulose material in flax fibres. Normalised adhesion force measurements have shown the importance of capillary forces when experiments were carried out under ambient conditions. Experiments, conducted under dry air, allowed for the deduction of the contribution of pure van der Waals forces, and our results, through the calculation of the Hamaker constant, show that these forces, for the PLA/cellulose/air system, were lower than those obtained for the cellulose/cellulose/air system and hence underlined the importance of optimising the interface among these materials. This study demonstrates the capacity of AFM to probe direct interactions in complex systems by adjusting the nature of the surface and the probe to mimic the materials in contact. Furthermore, the technique can be operated in a variety of environments, consistent with composite making and provides particular opportunity for testing and improving the properties of these new classes of composite materials. Advanced biocomposites reinforced by abundant biomass-derived fillers can add a revenue stream to enhance the economic viability of biofuel production chains and the energy efficiency of the composite industry. However, the low stiffness of biopolymers limits their use in structural applications. Poplar fibers (mesh size: <180 μm, Populus spp.), an abundant waste from the wood industry, were used as bio-filler to fabricate high-performance biocomposites based on polylactic acid (PLA), in which the poplar fibers were modified by an amino acid (l -lysine). As a benefit of the amino acid treatment, the tensile Young's moduli of the lysine/poplar/PLA composites increased by up to 68% with the addition of a small amount of lysine, compared with neat PLA. At the same time, the tensile strength, failure strain, and Young's modulus of the poplar/PLA composites all increased after adding only 0.1 wt % of lysine. It has been observed that the lysine content has a significant effect on the decomposition temperature, complex viscosity, storage modulus, crystallization temperature, and crystallinity of composites. The fracture surfaces of the composites with an optimum lysine content had fewer voids and were more compact compared with composites without any lysine. The pores on the surfaces of poplar fibers became more available for the penetration of PLA molecules as a result of lysine addition. Therefore, this study presents a facile method for reinforcing biocomposites with extremely low-cost and environmentally friendly biofillers. Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) presents suitable physicochemical properties and biocompatibility for biomedical engineering. However, PLA has some drawbacks, such as low cell adhesion, biological inertness, low degradation rate, and acid degradation by-products. In this review, recent progress on strategies to address these problems is summarized, including novel fabrication techniques, high-performance PLA composites, and their applications for tissue engineering and drug delivery. The scaffolds, especially for bone regeneration, blood vessels, organs, and skin regeneration are evaluated, in terms of in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility and biodegradability. The enhanced mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of PLA biocomposites are analyzed in detail. PLA biocomposites for drug encapsulation, sustained release, and tumor-targeting are also reviewed. Furthermore, the challenges and future perspectives on PLA-based biocomposites are discussed. The effect of cassava pulp (CP) on morphological, tensile, and thermal properties of a thermoplastic cassava starch (TPS)/poly (lactic acid) (PLA) blend was investigated. TPS/PLA/CP biocomposites were manufactured by melt extrusion and then converted into specimens using an injection molding. The weight fraction of PLA to TPS/CP was fixed at 40:60, whereas the final CP concentration in the composites was varied in the range of 4.4–22.1 wt%. CP could act as a reinforcement for TPS/PLA blend to enhance its tensile strength up to 354% and Young's modulus up to 722% when 22.1 wt% of CP was loaded and a nucleating agent for PLA as confirmed from the reduced T cc. In addition, TPS/PLA/CP composites showed a discrete phase structure (i.e., droplets in matrix) when CP with lower concentration (i.e., 4.4 wt%, 8.8 wt%, and 13.3 wt%) was incorporated and a bicontinuous phase structure (i.e., co-continuous) when higher concentration of CP (i.e., 17.7 wt% and 22.1 wt%) was employed.
