Monocropped maize is being discussed as a possible alternative to the conventional wheat-maize cropping system in order to conserve water in the North China Plain. To evaluate the economic and environmental consequences of converting cropping systems, wheat-maize, monocropped maize systems with and without irrigation are compared through a joint use of economic analysis, emergy evaluation and life cycle assessment in this study. According to the economic analysis results, the wheat-maize system has higher grain yield and levels of economic profit but a lower ratio of income to costs compared to monocropped maize systems with and without irrigation. The emergy evaluation results show that monocropped maize systems have higher levels of sustainability. Their environmental loading ratios are 8.16%–26.7% lower and the emergy sustainability indexes are 10.20%–30.52% higher than those of wheat-maize system, respectively. The life cycle assessment results reveal lower potential environmental impacts for monocropped maize systems and their total potential environment impact indexes are 39.59%–40.30% lower than that of wheat-maize system. These results indicate monocropped maize will be an effective measure to resolve the current issue of environmental pressures caused by the conventional wheat-maize system in the North China Plain. Inappropriate farm practices can increase greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and reduce soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, thereby increasing carbon footprints (CFs), jeopardizing ecosystem services, and affecting climate change. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to assess the effects of different tillage systems on CFs, GHGs emissions, and ecosystem service (ES) values of climate regulation and to identify climate-resilient tillage practices for a winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.)-summer maize ( Zea mays L.) cropping system in the North China Plain (NCP). The experiment was established in 2008 involving no-till with residue retention (NT), rotary tillage with residue incorporation (RT), sub-soiling with residue incorporation (ST), and plow tillage with residue incorporation (PT). The results showed that GHGs emissions from agricultural inputs were 6432.3–6527.3 kg CO 2 -eq ha −1 yr −1 during the entire growing season, respectively. The GHGs emission from chemical fertilizers and irrigation accounted for >80% of that from agricultural inputs during the entire growing season. The GHGs emission from agricultural inputs were >2.3 times larger in winter wheat than that in the summer maize season. The CFs at yield-scale during the entire growing season were 0.431, 0.425, 0.427, and 0.427 without and 0.286, 0.364, 0.360, and 0.334 kg CO 2 -eq kg −1 yr −1 with SOC sequestration under NT, RT, ST, and PT, respectively. Regardless of SOC sequestration, the CFs of winter wheat was larger than that of summer maize. Agricultural inputs and SOC change contributed mainly to the component of CFs of winter wheat and summer maize. The ES value of climate regulation under NT was ¥159.2, 515.6, and 478.1 ha −1 yr −1 higher than that under RT, ST, and PT during the entire growing season. Therefore, NT could be a preferred “Climate-resilient” technology for lowering CFs and enhancing ecosystem services of climate regulation for the winter wheat–summer maize system in the NCP. The North China Plain (NCP) is an important production base for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) in China, but intensive continuous winter wheat and summer maize (WM) double-cropping system (control) has also created the high carbon footprint (CF) ecological problems. It is imperative to build a new rotation pattern that not only achieves direct and indirect low greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, but also takes into account the grain security. CF metrics (per unit area (CF a), per unit economic output (CF e) and per unit kg grain yield (CF y)) were calculated for a two-year crop rotation experiment established at the Wuqiao Experimental Station, from October 2016 to September 2018. The treatments were eight alternative crop sequences grown in the first year, followed by WM in the second year. Alternative crop sequences included (1) WM, (2) fallow, (3) spring maize, (4) winter wheat, (5) spring sweet potato (Dioscorea esculenta (Lour.) Burkill), (6) spring peanut (Arachis hypogaea Linn.), (7) winter wheat-summer peanut, and (8) potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) - silage maize. The results showed that fallow → WM and winter wheat → WM were weak absorption sinks of net GHG, and other rotation patterns were all net sources during the experimental period, while the seven rotation patterns could attain 48%–94% of grain crops yield in control. Spring sweet potato → WM and winter wheat - summer peanut → WM, had no significant differences with control from three different CF perspectives. Spring maize → WM, spring peanut → WM, and potato - silage maize → WM produced more CF than control. Therefore, fallow and planting winter wheat alone in the first year of novel two-year rotation patterns reduced CF in the NCP, planting spring sweet potato and winter wheat-summer peanut increased net income without increasing CF and without compromising grain security, which could attain 1.53 and 1.12 times of the control. Abstract: The annual nitrogen (N) budget and groundwater nitrate-N concentrations were studied in the field in three major intensive cropping systems in Shandong province, north China. In the greenhouse vegetable systems the annual N inputs from fertilizers, manures and irrigation water were 1358, 1881 and 402kgNha−1 on average, representing 2.5, 37.5 and 83.8 times the corresponding values in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–maize (Zea mays L.) rotations and 2.1, 10.4 and 68.2 times the values in apple (Malus pumila Mill.) orchards. The N surplus values were 349, 3327 and 746kgNha−1, with residual soil nitrate-N after harvest amounting to 221–275, 1173 and 613kgNha−1 in the top 90cm of the soil profile and 213–242, 1032 and 976kgNha−1 at 90–180cm depth in wheat–maize, greenhouse vegetable and orchard systems, respectively. Nitrate leaching was evident in all three cropping systems and the groundwater in shallow wells (<15m depth) was heavily contaminated in the greenhouse vegetable production area, where total N inputs were much higher than crop requirements and the excessive fertilizer N inputs were only about 40% of total N inputs. High nitrogen (N) inputs in Chinese vegetable and cereal productions played key roles in increasing crop yields. However, emissions of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and atmospheric pollutant nitric oxide (NO) increased too. For lowering the environmental costs of crop production, it is essential to optimize N strategies to maintain high crop productivity, while reducing the associated N losses. We performed a 2 year-round field study regarding the effect of different combinations of poultry manure and chemical N fertilizers on crop yields, N use efficiency (NUE) and N 2 O and NO fluxes from a Welsh onion-winter wheat system in the North China Plain. Annual N 2 O and NO emissions averaged 1.14–3.82 kg N ha −1 yr −1 (or 5.54–13.06 g N kg −1 N uptake) and 0.57–1.87 kg N ha −1 yr −1 (or 2.78–6.38 g N kg −1 N uptake) over all treatments, respectively. Both N 2 O and NO emissions increased linearly with increasing total N inputs, and the mean annual direct emission factors (EF d ) were 0.39% for N 2 O and 0.19% for NO. Interestingly, the EF d for chemical N fertilizers (N 2 O: 0.42–0.48%; NO: 0.07–0.11%) was significantly lower than for manure N (N 2 O: 1.35%; NO: 0.76%). Besides, a negative power relationship between yield-scaled N 2 O, NO or N 2 O + NO emissions and NUE was observed, suggesting that improving NUE in crop production is crucial for increasing crop yields while decreasing nitrogenous gas release. Compared to the current farmers’ fertilization rate, alternative practices with reduced chemical N fertilizers increased NUE and decreased annual N 2 O + NO emissions substantially, while crop yields remained unaffected. As a result, annual yield-scaled N 2 O + NO emissions were reduced by > 20%. Our study shows that a reduction of current application rates of chemical N fertilizers by 30–50% does not affect crop productivity, while at the same time N 2 O and NO emissions would be reduced significantly.
