Background: When treating cancer patients, the progression of symptoms is accompanied by the deterioration of systemic conditions and motor function. From a risk-benefit perspective, a certain level of physical function must be maintained to continue cancer treatment. Recently, outpatient cancer treatment has become more common. Motor function is important to determine the feasibility of continuing cancer treatment. The study aimed to evaluate the motor function of patients with visceral cancer using locomo tests established by Japanese Orthopaedic Association.Methods: Locomo tests were performed, and the results were compared with data from non-cancer individuals. Background data were matched by propensity score matching. Data from 53 cancer patients (group C) were compared with that of 75 non-cancer patients (group N).Results: The average score in the two-step test of group C was lower than that of group N (1.27: 1.37, p = 0.004). The average function in the stand-up test of group C was worse than that of group N (p = 0.001). The average score in the 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale (GLFS) of group C was significantly higher than that of group N (19.92: 5.29, SE 2.21, p < 0.001). Higher 25-question GLFS scores indicate reduced mobility. The proportion of the locomo stage 2 in group C was significantly higher than in group N (51%: 13%, p < 0.001). The results of the two field tests revealed a clinically minimal difference between the two groups, but a statistically significant difference. Locomo tests may be detect potential motor dysfunction in outpatient cancer patients with apparently maintained motor function.Conclusions: Even in cancer patients who attend outpatient clinics, their motor functions could be potentially impaired. Therapeutic interventions to maintain and enhance motor function for cancer patients could be useful for continuing cancer treatment, and furthermore, improving prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the treatment preference among oncologists, patients with lung cancer, and their family members in China.Methods: A face-to-face discrete choice experiment survey was conducted among oncologists, patients, and their family members. Participants completed 13 choice sets describing 6 key attributes, namely, overall survival time, risk of severe adverse effect, severity of pain, appetite, physical functioning status, and monthly cost. Mixed logit model and latent class analysis were used to estimate attribute level preference weights and the relative importance (RI) for attributes. The willingness to pay (WTP) and maximum acceptable risk (MAR) were also estimated. The RI, WTP, and MAR of oncologists, patients, and family members were compared.Results: A total of 121 oncologists and 161 dyads of patients and family members completed the survey. Overall survival time, physical functioning status, and pain were the 3 most important attributes across all 3 groups. Oncologists and family members had higher RI on overall survival time than patients (48% and 51% vs 38%). Patients had higher RI on physical functioning status and pain (23% and 14%) than oncologists (13% and 12%) and family members (16% and 11%). For extending survival, patients had the least WTP, and family members had the highest MAR. The latent class analysis identified 2 classes in the patient group and 3 classes in oncologist and family member groups.Conclusions: There were differences in preferences for survival, risk, quality of life, and costs associated with cancer treatments among patients, oncologists, and family members. Background: As a mind-body exercise, Tai Chi (TC) may have a positive impact on physical function and psychological well-being in patients with breast cancer (BC). The aim of this current overview of systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) was to identify and summarize the existing evidence regarding the effectiveness of TC in patients with BC.Methods: A computerized search of electronic databases was performed to identify relevant SRs/MAs of TC related to BC from inception to June 2020. The Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklists were used to assess the methodological quality and reporting quality of SRs and MAs, respectively. The Grades of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the evidence quality of outcome measures.Results: Six SRs/MAs in which quantitative synthesis was used to assess various outcomes of TC related to BC were included in this overview. The quality of the SRs/MAs and the evidence quality of the outcome measures were generally unsatisfactory. The limitations of the past SRs/MAs were the lack of a protocol and registration, a list of excluded studies, or inadequately reported computational details of meta-analyses. The critical problems were that the qualitative data synthesis relied on the trials with small sample sizes and of critical low quality.Conclusions: TC is possibly beneficial to BC treatment. However, further rigorous and comprehensive studies are required to provide robust evidence for definitive conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the incidence of cancers is continuously increasing in young adults. Early-onset cancer (EOC) is usually defined as patients with cancers under the age of 50, and may represent a unique subgroup due to its special disease features. Overall, EOCs often initiate at a young age, present as a better physical performance but high degree of malignancy. EOCs also share common epidemiological and hereditary risk factors. In this review, we discuss several representative EOCs which were well studied previously. By revealing their clinical and molecular similarities and differences, we consider the group of EOCs as a unique subtype compared to ordinary cancers. In consideration of EOC as a rising threat to human health, more researches on molecular mechanisms, and large-scale, prospective clinical trials should be carried out to further translate into improved outcomes. Medical and surgical treatments for breast cancer have various adverse effects. Both mobile health and supervised intervention strategies have been implemented to overcome these effects, but some gaps remain to be addressed. Scientific evidence for the effectiveness of occupational therapy in cancer is limited. To compare the clinical effectiveness of the BENECA mHealth app used alone or combined with an integral supervised rehabilitation strategy that focused on cognitive performance, mood state, functional capacity, and cancer-related pain and fatigue in overweight women after breast cancer. In this secondary analysis of an assessor-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial, 80 overweight women after breast cancer (stage I-IIIA) were randomly allocated to an integral approach group (IA; n =40) or a control group (CG; n =40). All participants participated in an 8-week intervention. Assessments were performed at baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months and included cognitive performance (Trial Making Test and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), psychological state (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), pain (Brief Pain Inventory), fatigue (Piper Fatigue Scale), and physical function (6 min walk test). An intention-to-treat analysis was conducted with analysis of covariance. Selective attention (TMT) was significantly higher in the IA group, with a moderate to large effect size for TMT A (T2: d=1.1; T 3: d=1.2), working memory and processing speed (WAIS), anxiety and general HADS score (d =1.6), and functional capacity at 8 weeks and 6 months (d =1.5). Fatigue perception (mean difference, -0.6; 95% CI -1.4 to 0.04; p =0.009) and pain (intensity level p <0.001; interference level p =0.002) were also significantly more improved in the IA group. An integral strategy involving the BENECA mHealth app with a supervised, multimodal intervention improved cognitive, psychological, and functional performance in women after breast cancer more than mHealth alone. Effects of exercise in patients with breast cancer have been thoroughly investigated. The aim was to explore differences in effects regarding type, delivery mode and extensiveness (e.g. intensity; volume) of the interventions. We searched for randomised controlled trials including patients with breast cancer receiving systemic treatment, exercise-based interventions, and measures on patient reported- and objectively measured outcomes. Exercise showed significant and moderate effects on the primary outcomes quality of life and physical function, Standardised Mean Difference: 0.52 (95 % CI 0.38–0.65) and 0.52 (95 % CI 0.38–0.66), respectively. Type of exercise had little influence on the effects, however combined aerobic- and resistance exercise seemed superior for increasing physical function, compared to aerobic or resistance exercise. Supervised interventions were superior to partly and unsupervised. Extensiveness of the intervention only influenced physical function. Supervised interventions, more than type or extensiveness of interventions, seem to increase effects.
