Paper mills are among the most polluting industries, responsible for many organic and inorganic compounds emissions. The fibres electro-kinetic features strongly affect the ability to retain fillers since the fillers–fibres interactions are charge induced. The control and the prediction of these parameters would represent a precious aid for process management, allowing the fillers retention enhancement, a lower environmental impact and the paper sheet properties streamlining. The work presented deals with the implementation and training of four artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of the main electrochemical and physical features of cellulose pulp and paper. First, two ANNs predict the electrochemical parameters. Following, they were applied to predict the paper sheet properties and fillers retention. The neural models implemented showed outstanding prediction performance, with R2 in the order of 0.999 and a low mean error. The results demonstrate how Artificial Neural Networks may be a valuable instrument for paper mill pollutant reduction. Abstract: This paper is focuses modeling of the last part of the paper machine – the drying section. Paper is dried by letting it pass through a series of steam heated group of cylinders and the evaporation is thus performed by the latent heat of vaporization of the steam. The moisture in the paper is controlled by adjusting the set point of the steam presure controllers to the cylinders. There exist several incentives to focus on the performance of the moisture control. The time to perform a grade change is often limited by the moisture and shorter grade change time is directly correlated to economic profit. The plant model is identified periodically and the changes in its dynamic characteristics are observed. Periodic identification gives a great advantage over the conventional controller tuning methods, which uses the plant model at the nominal operating conditions. A variety of model structures are available to assist in modelling a system. Model for the drying process of Paper industry is established based on gathering 1000 groups of 2500 real-time sample data. Based on the collection of data, that was adapted to both the conventional and intelligent modelling process. As semiconductor performance improves through advanced package designs, it becomes important to consider both thermal and mechanical properties. Better understanding their relationship enhances system design and optimization. This study has introduced a numerical method that takes into account both thermal and mechanical fluxes to construct thermal and mechanical property maps for practical application in semiconductor engineering. Furthermore, this paper investigated the relationship between the two properties using the constructed property maps in commercially available semiconductor packages. Owing to the complexity of packaging design patterns, a coupled isoparametric mapping and machine learning (ML) method was introduced to investigate their effects. The model then determines and investigates the anisotropic equivalent thermal and mechanical properties of the commercialized semiconductor packages with complex pattern designs, according to the package materials, volume fractions of each material, and design patterns. This approach pursues more sophistication and practicality compared to simplified composite structure property evaluation models. Additionally, all processes in the algorithm are automated based on ML methods, making them practically applicable in the semiconductor industry. The study shows that there is a strong correlation between the thermal and mechanical characteristics in the complex package patterns. This relationship was able to form a fairly clear category based on the shape of the dielectric band because the dielectric band had significantly different effects on the thermal and mechanical fluxes. The study discussed the physical implications of the similarities and differences between the two behaviors and validated the results of the equivalent properties through finite element (FE) analysis. Finally, the study cross-validates the relationship by showing that information from one flux behavior can be used to predict the other based on the ML method. Power generation systems using photovoltaic (PV) technology have become increasingly popular due to their high production efficiency. A partial shading defect is the most common defect in this system under the process of production, diminishing both the amount and quality of energy produced. This paper proposes an Artificial Neural Network and Golden Eagle Optimization based prediction of the fault and its detection in a standalone PV system to recover the optimum performance and diagnosis of the PV system. The proposed technique combines the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Golden Eagle Optimization (GEO) algorithm. The major contribution of this work is to raise PV systems' performance. The result is a defect in the classification and identification of an ANN is used. The use of GEO provides an efficient optimization technique for ANN training, which reduces the training time and improves the accuracy of the model. This paper reports the prediction results of the ionospheric irregularities represented by the ROTI index close to the equatorial ionization anomaly's Northern peak. A feedforward backpropagation Neural Network (NN) approach is implemented using a time series Nonlinear Autoregressive approach with Exogenous inputs (NARX). We used the data from a dual frequency GPS-SCINDA station located at Helwan (geographic coordinates of 29.86°N, 31.32°E, and MLAT of 29.94°N) in Egypt. To allow the model to be independently tested during varying levels of solar activities, we collected a 5-minute resolution of ROTI data for the solar cycle 24 from 2009 to 2017. The factors that influence the development of ionospheric irregularities are involved in the established model representing the diurnal and seasonal variations as well as solar and geomagnetic activity parameters. To support learning, we included IRI-foF2 and IRI-hmF2 parameters in the input layer neurons to improve the model learning about the behavior of the ionospheric F layer. The results show that the NN-ROTI values precisely match the GPS-ROTI values with an RMSE of 0.106 TECU/min and a prediction efficiency of 95%. The predicted values are highly correlated with the originals, with a regression of 0.89. Furthermore, the irregularities were more prevalent during the equinox months than during the solstice months. It is also observed that predicted NN-ROTI values in all seasons have RMSEs less than 0.03 and 0.05 TECU/min for the low and high solar activity, respectively. The results also showed a clear correlation between solar activity and the occurrence percentage of ionospheric irregularities indicating a solar cycle dependency. The thermomechanical coupling response analysis and volume fraction optimization analysis of the FGMs spherical shell with material uncertainties are realized for zirconia-titanium FGMs, with the maximum normalized Von Mises stress as the structural safety index and the ANN as the fast calculation method. In addition, the Von Mises stress of the FGMs spherical shell and a ZrO 2 -Ti alloy double-layer spherical shell under different loads is compared. The results show that material parameter uncertainties, especially those in Young's modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and uniaxial yield limit significantly affect structural safety. The structural safety index λ calculated based on the volume fraction optimization design of FGMs spherical shell is significantly lower than that of the ZrO 2 -Ti alloy double-layer. The ANN method greatly improves the computational efficiency for uncertain problems and maintains high accuracy, compared with the statistical analysis after many calculations by randomly selecting material parameters. This paper introduces a novel direct torque control approach based on the decision tree (T-DTC), employing artificial neural networks that are effectively trained to enhance accuracy and robustness. The main objective of T-DTC is the substantial reduction of flux and torque ripples inherent in the conventional DTC, ensuring effective control of the induction motor. The conventional hysteresis controllers for stator flux and electromagnetic torque are replaced by two advanced controllers named M5 Prime model trees. Additionally, the traditional switching table is substituted with a novel decision tree table utilizing the classifier algorithm 4.5. The effectiveness of the proposed T-DTC strategy is demonstrated through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink and validated in real-time using an HIL platform based on OPAL-RT OP 5600 and Virtex 6 FPGA ML605. This paper proposes an intelligent control scheme for a two-stage integrated onboard electric vehicle (EV) battery charger connected to a single-phase household outlet which offers a close to ideal battery charging profile with power factor correction feature. Generally, the front-end AC–DC​ conversion stage is controlled by dual loop proportional–integral (PI) controllers, and tuning their gain constants is a difficult task. Furthermore, to achieve a close to ideal charging profile for an EV battery, the DC–DC conversion stage switches from constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) mode after a certain state of charge (SOC) which may lead to discontinuity in the charging current and voltage. This paper attempts to solve these issues by proposing an intelligent control scheme that includes the dynamic estimation of PI controller gain constants as well as provides a seamless mode transfer feature for battery charging. It is achieved by using fuzzy-PI-based control in the AC–DC conversion stage and Bayesian Regularization (BR) algorithm trained artificial neural network (ANN)-based control in the DC–DC conversion stage. The performance of the proposed control scheme is assessed both in steady-state and transient conditions in MATLAB® Simulink environment by comparing it against similar control schemes. The proposed intelligent control approach improves the dynamic response of DC link voltage, offers unity power factor operation and maintains the line current harmonics within IEEE 519 standards even during the switchover from CC to CV charging mode. Also, there is a decrease of 85% in the third harmonic component of the source current, 23.2% improvement in DC link voltage undershoot and 6.5% reduction in DC link voltage overshoot with reduced settling times using the proposed unified control scheme. Researchers are putting in a lot of time and energy into developing methods to use machine learning algorithms, a subfield of AI, to ‎diagnose disease in an individual patient. Extensive studies have been conducted on the potential benefits of using machine learning ‎techniques in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. For this preliminary study, the study have zeroed down on heart illness to get ‎as specific as possible about our methodology. In this paper, the authors investigate the differences in accuracy between different ‎machine learning approaches specifically, (SVM), (KNN), and a(ANN) when applied to the categorization of cardiovascular ‎illness. Our research makes use of approximately seventy thousand patient records from the Kaggle dataset, which focuses on ‎cardiovascular disease The Kaggle dataset comprises a limited number of variables per patient record, encompassing serum ‎cholesterol, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, relative blood glucose levels, and the presence or absence of angina.‎ The present study examines the Kaggle dataset and employs the (KNN), (SVM), and (ANN) methodologies. The results indicate ‎that the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm, specifically with a value of 9 for the number of neighbors, achieved an accuracy of ‎‎0.997. The SVM model using default hyperparameters achieved an accuracy of 0.9997. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) model ‎utilizing a Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel and a C value of 100.0 exhibited an accuracy of 0.9998. Conversely, the SVM model ‎employing a linear kernel and a C value of 1000.0 achieved a perfect accuracy of 1.000. The paper describes three lossy data compression techniques based on the principal component analysis (PCA), which are compared using the image compression task. The presented approach uses both classical PCA method based on the eigen-decomposition of the image data covariance matrix and two different neural network structures. The first neural structure is a two-layer feed-forward network with supervised learning acting as the so-called autoencoder, and the second one is a single-layered network with an unsupervised learning method commonly known as the generalized Hebbian algorithm. For each compression method mentioned above, the influence of the number of image segments (frames) and the number of eigenvalues/eigenvectors on the compression ratio and the image quality are examined using three different gray-scale test images. The paper also addresses a vital implementation issue regarding selecting appropriate data types to represent the compressed data. The paper's main conclusion is that the classical PCA method outperforms its neural counterparts, both in terms of the decompressed image quality and the time required to perform the compression procedure. Multiphase flow has many applications, such as oil and gas industries. Flow meter devices must be calibrated with field or laboratory data. One of the best methods to calibrate the devices and determine flow parameters is artificial neural networks. In addition, due to development of multiphase flow sensors and computer systems, artificial neural networks are employed to determine the flow regime and phase volume fractions along the pipeline. Up until now, different methods of measurement such as flow pressure signal, radioactive, ultrasonic, impedance, and their combination with neural networks have been presented. In this paper, a review of these works is performed. The type of neural network, measurement method, neural network inputs and development of each method are investigated. Studies show that the use of the gamma-ray method is the most prevalent among the papers presented. Also, examining the flow regime detection and flow rate measurement over time has moved to the use of flow parameters, including pressure, temperature, velocity, viscosity, etc. This simple method (using flow parameters) has the potential to gradually replace more advanced techniques like ultrasonic and electrical, along with expensive techniques like gamma ray. The results of this review indicate that employing intricate neural networks with many layers and neurons slightly increases the accuracy of the results. In order to be able to extract useful information from MRI medical images, we need to carry out effective image segmentation of MRI medical image and use appropriate operators to detect the edge of the image. Firstly, this paper adopts a research method based on the characteristics of horizontal, vertical and diagonal differences, and then carries out comparative analysis on different operators from different perspectives such as frequency domain and velocity domain. After analyzing the results, it is concluded that: Canny operator can detect complete, continuous and detailed edges at a faster speed. This paper uses edge detector based on Canny operator as the training output of artificial neural network. By training artificial neural network. The optimized parameters were obtained, and subjective analysis and computational analysis were performed on the quality of edge detection results of MRI medical images based on different methods. The results show that compared with the single Sobel, Canny and other traditional operators, the edge information of MRI medical image obtained by the neural network-based edge detection method is more complete and its processing time is nearly 3 times faster than the traditional edge detection method. Overstaffing production in underground coal mining is not convenient for daily management, and incomplete information of coal miners hinders the rescue process of firefighters during mine accidents. To address this safety sustainability issue, a novel face recognition method based on an improved multiscale neural network is proposed in this paper. A new depthwise separable (DS)-inception block is designed and a joint supervised loss function based on center loss theory is developed to construct a new multiscale model. The miniers can be recognized in the harsh underground environment during the life rescue. Experimental results show that the accuracy, recall and F1-score indexes of the proposed method for the miner face recognition in the underground mining environment are 97.26%, 94.17% and 95.42%, respectively. Transfer model with joint supervised loss can effectively improve the recognition accuracy by about 0.5–1.5%. In addition, the average recognition accuracy of the proposed face recognition method achieves to 91.34% and the miss detection rate is less than 5% in the dugout tunnel of coal mine. Breast cancer is one of the serious diseases that threaten the life of many women worldwide. The seriousness of this disease is that it is often discovered in late stages after a period of its occurrence. This causes a wide spread of the disease and difficulty in its treatment. Another important characteristic of this disease is that it can return again after a period of its treatment. Therefore, predicting the occurrence or recurrence of such disease early is the best solution to have a high cure rate. The main objective of this paper is to improve the prediction performance of the breast cancer recurrence. Many methods have been proposed to predict breast cancer recurrence. However, these methods did not achieve the desired results on one of the most famous datasets in the field of breast cancer recurrence's prediction (i.e., Wisconsin Prognosis Breast Cancer (WPBC) dataset). The highest accuracy achieved using the previous methods is 89.89%. Therefore, this paper provides a framework for improving the prediction of breast cancer recurrence. The proposed framework has the ability to overcome many of the challenges in the existing dataset such as: (a) the problem of imbalance between classes using a data over-sampling technique; and (b) the large number of data dimensions using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and a wrapper dimensionality reduction technique based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). It also uses the neural network algorithm to fuse the results of two individual classifiers (i.e., Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM)). Our proposed framework evaluation showed a significant improvement in the predication performance. AC corrosion represents a chronic issue that is faced by the buried metallic pipelines that are neighboring by the high voltage overhead transmission lines (HVOHTLs). In this paper a potassium hydroxide polarization cell (KOH-PC) is employed on the pipeline to mitigate the generated voltage from the power lines' intrusion with the buried pipeline. This work further investigates an integrated system to exploit the discharged energy for compensating the cathodic protection disturbances where a portion of this energy may be converted to DC form and reapplied on the pipeline as a cathodic protection voltage. This paper also presents a comparative analysis of different KOH-PCs' models with different controllers to provide the guidelines for deciding which one of these techniques is more suitable for mitigating the induced voltage and improving the cathodic protection distribution during normal and fault operating conditions of transmission lines. The applied controllers are the artificial-neural-network (ANN), Fuzzy-logic-controller (FLC), and​ adaptive-neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The choice of the shape parameter highly effects the behaviour of radial basis function (RBF) approximations, as it needs to be selected to balance between the ill-conditioning of the interpolation matrix and high accuracy. In this paper, we demonstrate how to use neural networks to determine the shape parameters in RBFs. In particular, we construct a multilayer perceptron (MLP) trained using an unsupervised learning strategy, and use it to predict shape parameters for inverse multiquadric and Gaussian kernels. Despite advancements in technology, power system faults leading to electric power interruption remain a significant issue. Efficient restoration of the power system relies on the swift classification and clearance of faults. Among the various types of faults in transmission lines, open circuit and short circuit faults are commonly encountered. This study specifically focuses on the analysis of five types of short circuit faults: line-to-line, line-to-ground, double line-to-ground, triple line, and triple line-to-ground faults. Faults can cause both power failure and power loss in transmission lines. Once a fault occurs, it is crucial to restore electricity supply promptly to prevent further losses. Therefore, the development of a system capable of accurately and swiftly detecting and removing faults is essential. Traditionally, categorizing transmission line faults required sophisticated mathematical modeling, intricate signal processing techniques, and expert knowledge to interpret the output signals. In this paper, an alternative approach is proposed, utilizing deep learning techniques for transmission line fault classification. Specifically, the paper employs techniques such as artificial neural network (ANN), long short-term memory (LSTM), with and without window regression (WR). By implementing these deep learning techniques, automatic feature extraction and signal processing are achieved, streamlining the fault classification process. The experimental results obtained from this study demonstrate an accuracy of 42.98% for ANN, 99.98% for LSTM, and 99.99% for LSTM-WR. These outcomes underscore the effectiveness of the deep learning techniques employed in accurately classifying transmission line faults, with LSTM and LSTM-WR outperforming ANN in terms of accuracy. This paper therefore proposes an upscaling minute-level regional PV power forecasting scheme using the data of the selected reference PV plants. In this paper, a novel method of reference PV plants selection is proposed by comprehensively considering the prediction accuracy of artificial neural network (ANN) as well as Pearson correlation coefficient. The reference PV plant selection coefficient μ is introduced as the comprehensive indicator for reference PV plant selection, which incorporates Pearson correlation coefficient and MAPE. In addition, a PV output power correction method is assumed to guarantee the proper operation of regional power forecasting. Besides, this paper proposes a flexible approach to effectively decrease the accumulated error of rolling forecasting by integrating the forecasting results under different temporal resolutions. In specific, the power forecasting results in temporal resolutions of 1 min, 5 min and 15 min are simultaneously derived and the performance between the traditional rolling forecasting and the proposed method is compared. The validity of the proposed method is finally verified using the collected historical power data of PV plants installed in a city of Eastern China. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a new methodology for fault detection and classification in a renewable microgrid. The main contributions encompass two key aspects. Firstly, it enhances fault detection performance in microgrids characterized by nonlinear relationships, including photovoltaic, hydrokinetic, and variable electric load systems. Secondly, the combination of the discrete wavelet transform with various types of neural networks and supervised learning techniques provides a robust methodology for fault detection and classification. The proposed approach is evaluated using an IEEE-5 feeder test bed representing a realistic ring network configuration. The results show that the radial basis function neural network model exhibited promising outcomes, yielding a low prediction error of 1.31 e-31, highlighting its practical potential for enhancing system reliability and performance. Furthermore, various test cases were conducted by altering the ground resistance to train the neural networks, demonstrating the effectiveness of this neural network in accurately identifying fault conditions. In this paper, an electric vehicle (EV) charging station powered by a photovoltaic (PV) system has been created to charge EVs. Furthermore, the maximum available power from the PV system was extracted using a new algorithm called the simplified universal intelligent PID (SUIPID) controller, which has the advantages of simplicity in design and intelligence. The SUIPID controller was compared to the artificial neural networks (ANNs), the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) based on linear membership functions, and the FLC based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize its parameters under various conditions. The system simulation was first performed using MATLAB software, then an experimental set up was conducted to confirm the theoretical work. The proposed SUIPID responds 28.5%, 44.4%, and 61.5% faster than the PSO-FLC, ANN, and FLC, respectively, whereas the ITAE error was reduced by 27.3%, 52.9%, and 65.2%, respectively. Also, the charging procedure of the EV battery is precisely steady under different atmospheric conditions. During the satellite's operations, simulation tools perform an important role in ensuring the space mission success. In this sense, the models implemented in the context of an operational satellite simulator that enables analysis of health status and maintenance during operations shall reflect the current satellite behavior with high fidelity. Moreover, it is complicated to obtain all analytical models of a satellite's disciplines, considering its aging. This paper proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to reproduce the battery voltage behavior of a large sun-synchronous remote sensing satellite, the CBERS-4, currently in operation. Using the genetic algorithm to find the best network architecture of ANN, the neural model for this application presented an error of less than 1%, demonstrating its feasibility to obtain a high fidelity model for an operational simulator enabling extend analyses. The demand for electrical energy continues to rise at an alarming rate, while supply is not proportional to power demand. Thus, in order to accomplish appropriate preparation and operation of an electrical power system network, it is crucial to properly assess the present and future consumption of electric power systems. Meeting the electric load needs entails actively anticipating the amount of energy required to meet the subscribers' power demand. To forecast energy demand, many algebraic and artificial intelligence schemes have been used. This paper proposes an improved medium-term forecasting scheme that employs an artificial neural network (ANN). The model was developed and trained with the help of an artificial neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The data used, which ranged from 2014 to 2019, was obtained from the University of Nigeria Nsukka's (UNN) research and energy Centre, and the works department of the same university. The model was designed and simulated using MATLAB 2018a, and the results were evaluated using MAPE. The proposed system used a robust machine learning based scheme. Unlike conventional systems, the system demonstrated a MAPE of 4.34% and a correlation of 0.91144315 at predicted and actual loads, as shown in Table 2. In recent years, new techniques and algorithms such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) have been used as alternative statistical tools in modeling and forecasting issues. These methods have been extensively used in the field of geosciences and atmospheric physics. The main purpose of this paper is to combine FIS and ANNs for local modeling of the ionosphere Total Electron Content (TEC) in Iran. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is developed for TEC modeling. Also, Multi-Layer Perceptron ANN (MLP-ANN) and ANN based on Radial Base Functions (RBF) have been designed for analyzing ANFIS results. Observations of 29 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations from the Iranian Permanent GPS Network (IPGN) have been used in 3 different seasons in 2015 and 2016. These stations are located at geomagnetic low latitudes region. Out of these 29 stations, 24 stations for training and 5 stations for testing and validating were selected. The relative and absolute errors have been used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. Also, the results of this paper are compared with the International Reference Ionosphere model (IRI2016). The maximum values of the average relative error for RBF, MLP-ANN, ANFIS and IRI2016 methods are 13.88%, 11.79%, 10.06%, and 18.34%, respectively. Also, the maximum values of the average absolute error for these methods are 2.38, 2.21, 1.5 and 3.36 TECU, respectively. Comparison of diurnal predicted TEC from the ANFIS, RBF, MLP-ANN and IRI2016 models with GPS-TEC revealed that the ANFIS provides more accurate predictions than the other methods in the test area. This work is motivated by a particular problem of a modern paper manufacturing industry, in which the maximum efficiency of the fiber-filler recovery process is desired. A lot of unwanted materials along with valuable fibers and fillers come out as a by-product of the paper manufacturing process and mostly goes out as waste. The job of an efficient Krofta supracell is to separate the unwanted materials from the valuable ones so that fibers and fillers can be collected from the waste materials and reused in the manufacturing process. The efficiency of Krofta depends on several critical process parameters and monitoring them is a difficult proposition. To solve this problem, we propose a novel hybridization of regression trees (RT) and artificial neural networks (ANN), namely hybrid RT-ANN model, to solve the problem of low recovery percentage of the supracell. This model is used to achieve the goal of improving supracell efficiency, viz., gain in percentage recovery. Also, theoretical results for the universal consistency of the proposed model are given with the optimal value of a vital model parameter. Experimental findings show that the proposed hybrid RT-ANN model achieves higher accuracy in predicting Krofta recovery percentage than other conventional regression models for solving the Krofta efficiency problem. Recently, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have been extensively popular for employing Electroencephalography (EEG) signals to control devices with different applications. The use of BCIs currently involves for lots of applications to help the disabilities who cannot communicate with other people, as it is an alternative way for communication by passing the need of speech. Although the applications to spell the character with BCI systems (e.g., P300-speller, SSVEP-speller, Hex-O-spell) have been already developed, but these techniques are not flexible in the real scenarios because they require the stimulus all the time or stopping the activity to focus on the limb movement in order to provide the accuracy of brain responses. In this paper, the feasibility of brainwave classification for the applications of character-writing by considering only the EEG signals without the need of stimulus unlike the literature is newly introduced. This paper adopts a classification technique named Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and focuses on two different characters; straight line and circle. From the experimental results, the suitable position of electrodes are the pair of electrodes (F3 and F4) at the frontal lobe, which provide the best result as compared to other areas due to its important role in perception, maintenance and revival of the information. Dynamic loads on engineering structures are often difficult to measure directly. Therefore, indirect identification methods based on dynamic responses are commonly used. However, this approach is often influenced by ill-conditioned matrices, noise interference, unknown structural and/or material parameters, and difficulty of constructing transfer functions when the traditional physics-based model is used. To address these issues, significant strides have been made in data-driven identification of dynamic loads, which are model-free and independent of structural characteristics. This paper tries to present a comprehensive review of dynamic load identification methods based on data-driven techniques, covering two aspects: load localization and load reconstruction. Features of the widely used data-driven techniques such as the geometric method, reference database method, machine learning methods including SVM-based methods and ANN-based methods and deep learning methods are discussed in detail. OEC is an effective in-cylinder clean combustion technology, but it will lead to extremely high NO x emissions and even cause the NO x detector failure at high oxygen ratios. The particulate number (PN) emissions on OEC are emphatically analyzed in this paper, which are not covered in previous studies. The results show that with the increase of oxygen ratio, PN emissions first increase and then decrease. After analyzing the experimental results, convenient and efficient artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed to predict the torque output, HC, CO, NO x , and PN emissions based on Levenberg-Marquardt, Bayesian regularization and Scaled conjugate gradient algorithms. The models have good fitting and prediction performance with correlation coefficient values > 0.99 and mean square error values less than 1E-3, which effectively predict the invalid NO x emissions data. The MATLAB-Simulink simulation model is established to create 1000 data point, that is applied in an ANN for training, testing and verifying. The ANN-GA method is applied to identify the optimized required power and electric consumption under four typical slope grades in the area of (0–0.65%), four typical wheel radius in the area of (0.3–0.0.39 m), four typical frontal areas in the range of (0.423–1.323 m2), four typical speed levels from speed level 1 to speed level 4. After the ANN is trained, it is applied into the genetic algorithm to identify the effective performance. The prediction results reflect the major physical mechanism that governs ES performance and are validated against the MATLAB-Simulink simulation model. Additionally, the electric assisted bicycle can reach an effective performance area at 27.16 km/h with the optimized required power of 545.5 W at slope grade of 0%, wheel radius of 0.39 m, speed level 4, frontal area of 0.423 m2. The results show that the ANN-GA method is suitable to identifying structure and operating parameters including various slope grades, frontal areas, wheel radius, speed level for optimizing effective performance of EAB, which contributes a helpful method for EAB design and control. In this paper, the ecological quality of Singrauli sub-district over a decade was investigated based on images of IRS LISS III and Landsat series of 2005, 2010 and 2015 respectively. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to develop the Geo-Spatial Ecological Impact Index (GEII) by assigning weights to the five ecological parameters (vegetative cover, moisture content, built-up index, water index and Land Surface Temperature (LST) and to determine the degree of impact on each one due to the increased anthropogenic activities. The study concluded that, there was an increase in the built up and the overall LST by 6.24 °C whereas, the vegetation covers and moisture content has decreased during the years 2005 to 2015. Aggregate change in ecological quality can be inferred from the increasing mean of GEII values from 3.39 to 3.61 indicates deteriorating ecological quality. The predicted map of GEII 2025 prepared using artificial neural network (ANN) revealed that the high ecological impact zones will cover 37.95% of the area by 2025. The result obtained from the study can be useful for policy and decision makers for sustainable development of urban sectors and natural resource management of the area with respect to ecological impact assessment. Multi-target missions are an attractive solution to visit multiple bodies, increasing the scientific return and reducing the cost, compared to multiple missions to individual targets. Examples of multi-target missions are multiple active debris removals (MADR) and multiple near-Earth asteroids rendezvous (MNR) missions. MADR missions allow for the disposal of inactive satellites, preventing the build-up of space junk, while MNR missions allow to reduce the expenses of each asteroid observation. Since those missions are long and highly demanding in terms of energy, it is paramount to select the most convenient propulsion system so that the propellant mass and the duration of the mission are minimized. To this end, this paper proposes the use of a multi-objective optimization and artificial neural networks. The methodology is assessed by optimizing trajectories for MADR and MNR sequences with off-the-shelf thrusters. Multiple Pareto-optimal solutions can be identified depending on the propulsion system characteristics, enabling mission designers to trade-off the different options quickly and reliably. Utilizing a dataset with 30-minute intervals, the study first applies multi-linear regression across twelve feature selection methods to identify the most effective techniques based on a comprehensive set of performance metrics including Training Time, RMSE, MAE, R-squared, CVRMSE, NMBE, Mean MSE (via k-fold cross-validation), and the Standard Deviation of MSE (over 10-fold cross-validation). The top three methods—LASSO regression, Sequential Feature Selector, and Recursive Feature Elimination—were further analyzed as input features for a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model. The DNN's performance was evaluated across varying data sizes (20 %, 40 %, 50 %, 60 %, 80 %, and 100 %) and configurations ranging from one to ten hidden layers. The findings reveal that LASSO regression, when integrated with DNN, consistently outperforms in terms of CVRMSE and NMBE metrics across different data sizes and model complexities. Notably, increasing the dataset size from 20 % to 80 % markedly improves the model's predictive accuracy, underscoring the significance of larger datasets in enhancing DNN generalization and performance. Additionally, the study highlights a critical trade-off in DNN architecture: while models with fewer hidden layers (1–3) show greater performance variability in smaller datasets, increasing the number of layers does not linearly translate to better performance, illustrating the nuanced balance between model complexity and efficacy. Indirect evaporative cooling has garnered considerable attention and research owing to its notable advantages, especially high cooling efficiency and low energy consumption. However, the complexity and diversity of parameters affecting indirect evaporative cooler (IEC) performance necessitate the development of a fast and efficient performance prediction model, which remains a critical research objective. To address the particular challenge, this paper introduces a novel approach that utilizes the principles of neural network theory to construct a predictive model based on backpropagation artificial neural networks (BP-ANN). The developed model is employed to investigate the impact of six main operating parameters of the water spray system on the IEC performance. Wet-bulb efficiency and pressure drop of secondary air channel are utilized as the performance evaluation indexes. The model is rigorously validated by relevant experimental data, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the influence of each parameter on the operational performance of the whole system. The significance of the influential parameters is evaluated through grey relational analysis. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization approach employing a genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced to effectively determine the optimal operating parameters of the IEC system. The results demonstrate that the whole system can efficiently operate with low energy consumption when the wet-bulb efficiency and pressure drop weights are balanced. The optimal operating parameters include a nozzle pressure of 0.15 MPa, spacing of 85 mm, aperture of 6 mm, count of 11, spray density of 0.85 kg/(s ∙ m2) and air velocity of 2 m/s, at which time the wet-bulb efficiency was 0.85, the pressure drop was 210 Pa, and the coefficient of performance (COP) was 12.4, which demonstrated an efficiency increase of 23.2% in comparison with the base system. Microgrids are extensively integrated into electrical systems due to their many technical, economic, and environmental advantages. However, they encounter a challenge as they experience high-frequency fluctuations caused by the stochastic nature of renewable energy generation, electric loads, and the presence of Electric Vehicles (EVs). Therefore, various techniques, algorithms, and controllers have been introduced to ensure effective Load Frequency Control (LFC) and maintain a stable power system in microgrids. These methods aim to ensure that the system's frequency remains stable and within an acceptable range, especially when faced with changing load demands and other factors. This paper presents a novel enhanced control approach, Particle Swarm Optimization-Trained Artificial Neural Network (PSO-TANN), to optimize the load frequency model of a microgrid with vehicle-to-grid integration. The results are then compared under various scenarios, including renewable energy integration, EV charging and discharging dynamics, and varying load demands. The comparative analysis involves assessing the performance of the conventional Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller, the PSO-PID controller, and the newly proposed controlling technique. The suggested controller attains 99.904% efficiency with a negligible mean squared error of 1.1112 × 10−7, decreasing the integrated time absolute error to 1.0 × 10−4. It shows rapid response, precise targeting, and quick peak output ability, with marginal overshoot and undershoot, and a transient time of 28.5626 s, efficiently controlling microgrid frequency. Stability analysis validates the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-TANN controller in ensuring stability within the microgrid's LFC system during uncertainties and disturbances. However, no researcher has considered such trapdoor problems in the past. In this study, the dataset is obtained by using finite element limit analysis (FELA). The proposed hybrid machine learning models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and various types of optimization algorithms (OAs), namely, ant colony optimization (ACO), artificial lion optimization (ALO), the imperialist competition algorithm (ICA), and shuffled complex evolution (SCE), are also proposed in this paper by undergoing rigorous optimization to ensure accuracy and efficiency in capturing the intricate dynamics of the stability investigations from the models. The performance of the proposed ANN-based models is assessed using several performance metrics, regression plots, and rank analysis. The proposed ANN-SCE model outperforms the other proposed models in predicting trapdoor stability, where the ANN-SCE model achieved the highest rank, with a score of 58, followed by the ANN-ALO (47), ANN-ICA (33), and ANN-ACO (22) models. This paper proposes a novel hardware architecture for a Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) with the objective of minimizing the number of execution clock cycles needed for the network's computation. The proposed architecture depends mainly on using two physical layers that are multiplexed and reused during the computation of the FFNN to achieve an efficient parallel design. Two physical layers are designed to handle the computation of different sizes of Neural Networks (NN). The proposed FFNN architecture hardware resources are independent of the NN's number of layers, instead, they depend only on the number of neurons in the largest layer. This versatile architecture serves as an accelerator in Deep Neural Network (DNN) computations as it exploits parallelism by making the two physical layers work in parallel through the computations. The proposed implementation was implemented with 18-bit fixed point representation reaching 200 MHz clock speed on a Spartan7 FPGA. The current compliance networks of automatic air-quality monitoring stations in large urban environments are not sufficient to provide spatial and temporal measurement resolution for realistic assessment of personal exposure to pollutants. Small low-cost sensor platforms with greater mobility and expected lower maintenance costs, are increasingly being used as a supplement to compliance monitoring stations. However, low-cost sensor platforms usually provide data with uncertain precision. To improve the precision, these sensor platforms require in-field calibration. Our paper aims to demonstrate that data from each individual sensor system can be corrected using that sensor system's own data to achieve much improved data quality compared to a reference. However, in this procedure, there are practical difficulties such as individual sensor outputs from the multi-sensor system not being sufficiently available due to malfunctions for instance. We explore how this can be dealt with. In our opinion, this is a novel approach, of practical importance both to users and manufacturers. We present a detailed comparative analysis of Linear Regression (univariate), Multivariate Linear Regression and Artificial Neural Networks used with a specific aim of calibrating field-deployed low-cost CO and O 3 sensors. For Artificial Neural Network models, the performance of three common training algorithms was compared (Levenberg-Marquardt, Resilient back-propagation and Conjugate Gradient Powell-Beale algorithm). Data for this study were obtained from two campaigns conducted with 25 multi-sensor AQMESH v.3.5 platforms used within the activities of the CITI-SENSE project. The platforms were co-located to reference gas monitors at the Automatic Monitoring Station Stari Grad, in Belgrade, Serbia. This paper demonstrates that Multivariate Linear Regression and Artificial Neural Network calibration models can improve the output signal. This improvement can be measured by changes in the median and interquartile ranges of statistical parameters used for model evaluation. Artificial Neural Networks showed the best results compared to Linear Regression and Multivariate Linear Regression models. The best predictors for CO, in addition to CO low-cost sensor data, were PM 2.5 and NO 2 , while for O 3 , in addition to O 3 low-cost sensor data, the most suitable input predictors were NO and aH. Based on residual error analysis, we have shown that for CO and O 3 , a certain range of concentrations exists in which calibrated values differ by less than 10% from the reference method results. In addition, it was noted that for all models, CO sensors consistently showed lower variability between platforms compared to O 3 sensors. Abstract This paper aims to better manage the reverse supply chain of the automotive industry in the context of green, circular, and sustainable development by predicting the number of end-of-life vehicles to be recycled through the establishment of a multi-factor model. The prediction of the number of end-of-life vehicles to be recycled in this paper will support the end-of-life vehicle recycling industry in terms of recycling management and investment decision-making and provide a reference for the formulation and implementation of policies relating to end-of-life vehicles. To solve the problems posed by nonlinear characteristics and uncertainty in the number of end-of-life vehicles recycled, and deal with the multiple factors influencing the recycling number, this paper presents a combined prediction model consisting of a grey model, exponential smoothing and an artificial neural network optimized by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Using Shanghai's end-of-life vehicle reverse logistics industry as an example, this study selects historical data about end-of-life vehicles recycled in Shanghai during the 2005–2016 period, identifies multiple influential factors, and validates the effectiveness and feasibility of the prediction model through empirical research. This paper proposes an effective prediction model for end-of-life vehicle industry managers, researchers, and regulators dealing with the industry's common challenges. Fiber orientation tensors (FOT) are used as a compact form of representing the mechanically important quantity of fiber orientation in fiber reinforced composites. While they can be obtained via image processing methods from micro computed tomography scans (μ CT), the specimen size needs to be sufficiently small for adequate resolution – especially in the case of carbon fibers. In order to avoid massive workload by scans and image evaluation when determining full-field FOT distributions for a plaque or a part, e.g., for comparison with process simulations, the possibilities of a direct interpolation of a few measured FOT at specific support points were opened in this paper. Hence, three different tensor interpolation methods were implemented and compared qualitatively with the help of visualization through tensor glyphs and quantitatively by calculating originally measured tensors at support points and evaluating the deviations. The methods compared in this work include two algebraic approaches, firstly, a Euclidean component averaging and secondly, a decomposition approach based on separate invariant and quaternion weighting, as well as an artificial intelligence (AI)-based method using an artificial neural network (ANN). While the decomposition method showed the best results visually, quantitatively the component averaging method and the neural network behaved better (that is for the type of quantitative error assessment used in this paper) with mean absolute errors of 0.105 and 0.114 when calculating previously measured tensors and comparing the components. With each method providing different advantages, the use for further application as well as necessary improvement is discussed. This study presents a review of literature on the usage of artificial neural networks (ANNs) architecture contribution method and structural equation modeling (SEM), and proposes a new selection process in the context of algorithm -based SEM-ANNs schemes. This study enriches academic literature by providing a review of all the main aspects of customization in ANNs and contribution methods in combination with SEM. Academic databases are examined for exhibition findings, yielding 253 papers published between 2016 and 2022. The retrieved papers are categorized according to inclusion criteria, and the final set of 73 articles are discussed based on two directions, namely, 'Sector-based' and 'Algorithm-based' as a new representation of taxonomy research. A state-of-the-art bibliographic analysis is presented. This review also identifies modern challenges and open issues in terms of multiple evaluation criteria, importance criteria, and data variations related to the selection of customizations in ANNs and contribution methods combined with SEM in different industrial cases. Several issues fall under multicriteria decision making for handling complexity problems in different ANNs and contribution methods. Thus, this study also presents a research proposal and recommends a solution based on a three-phase methodology for handling the selection and overcoming the identified issues, subsequently completing a strategic guideline solution. A numerical investigation was conducted to explore the heat transfer and flow characteristics of welded plate heat exchanger with chevron sinusoidal corrugated plates and to find the optimal parameter design in this paper. For better thermo-hydraulic performance, the effects of chevron angle (β = 30 ° ,45 ° ,60 °), the height of the corrugations (H = 3,5,7,9) and the pitch of corrugations (P = 15,20,30,45,60) were studied with inlet velocity ranged from 0.1 m/s to 0.5 m/s. Moreover, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) were employed to obtain optimization solutions of the structural parameters. With the analysis of flow form inside the flow channel, it was proposed that the chevron sinusoidal corrugated plates were helpful to transform the axial velocity of fluid to radial velocity, forming turbulence and secondary flow in the narrow region. The numerical results showed that the comprehensive performance of the plate with β = 45° was better than the other two, while P = 30 mm and H = 9 mm also performed well in this paper. Besides, an optimal parameters set was obtained with P = 15.132 mm, H = 3.005 mm, β = 45.495° when the velocity of inlet was set as 0.1 m/s, the maximum JF could reach 0.034 as the results of multi-objective optimization. • Three geometric parameters of chevron sinusoidal corrugated plates were employed in different cases and the influence of these parameters on thermo-hydraulic performance were studied. • Artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) were employed to obtain optimization solutions of the structural parameters. • The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was adopted to optimal compromise solution. Active debris removal (ADR) allows for the disposal of inactive satellites and larger objects, preventing the build-up of space junk and allowing to replace aging agents in a constellation. To make ADR missions more commercially viable, the removal and disposal of multiple debris objects using a single spacecraft are investigated. This paper proposes the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to quickly estimate the cost and duration of the transfers to de-orbit a range of debris objects, so that it is possible to identify the optimal sequence of objects which minimizes the cost and/or the duration of the mission, for the maximum number of de-orbited objects. To this end, the ANN is integrated within a sequence search algorithm based on a tree search. The performance of the proposed methodology is assessed by analyzing three distinctive sequences of multiple space debris removals. A near-term low-thrust propulsion technology enables to dispose of up to 13 debris objects within 10 years, when the optimal design parameters are chosen. In this paper, we describe methods to establish the relationships among geomorphology (physiographic) data, topography, and physical parameters in different-sized catchments using GIS techniques. GIS software allows performing interpolation point, vector or raster analysis based on topographic parameters, simultaneously with mapping land use. This technique depends on the quantity of spatial information. Our objective was to explain the most important geomorphological parameters with an emphasis on surface erosion in mountain areas. Assessment of fluvial sediment in streams is essential to evaluate surface run-off. In the present paper, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were applied to show relationships among total phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen and suspended sediment concentration using architecture based on geomorphological features. Results may be applied at a catchment scale of 1 km 2 to more than 50 km 2 . Our methods are important for investigating the land-use for final assembly depending on sediment-erosion appraisal. This understanding is critical for developing geomorphological models to predict the detachment of soil and transport from their mass, derived-debris material and surface run-off. The objective of this paper is to optimize the passive design of newly-built residential buildings in hot summer and cold winter region of China for improving indoor thermal comfort while reducing building energy demand. In this respect, this paper investigates the performance of a representative apartment building in the city of Shanghai and evaluates the optimum solutions by using a developed optimization approach, which includes three major steps of 1) setting the model for multi-objective optimization, 2) sensitivity analysis for reducing the dimension of input variables, and 3) multi-objective optimization by using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) coupled with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN), among which a novel indicator for evaluating the annual indoor thermal comfort of residential buildings of Shanghai named Comfort Time Ratio (CTR) is defined based on the modification of Szokolay’s theory in terms of bioclimatic analysis, and the impacts of passive design variables on the indoor thermal comfort and building energy demand in terms of different directions are comprehensively investigated. Results of the multi-objective optimization indicate that the residential buildings of Shanghai have a great potential in comfort-improvement and energy-saving. A series of novel optimal passive design tactics for residential buildings in Shanghai are derived accordingly which could be easily understood and conveniently carried out by the architects in practice. The fragility curve is defined as the conditional probability of failure of a structure, or its critical components, at given values of seismic intensity measures (IMs). The conditional probability of failure is usually computed adopting a log-normal assumption to reduce the computational cost. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) is constructed to improve the computational efficiency for the calculation of structural outputs. The following aspects are addressed in this paper: (a) Implementation of an efficient algorithm to select IMs as inputs of the ANN. The most relevant IMs are selected with a forward selection approach based on semi-partial correlation coefficients; (b) quantification and investigation of the ANN prediction uncertainty computed with the delta method. It consists of an aleatory component from the simplification of the seismic inputs and an epistemic model uncertainty from the limited size of the training data. The aleatory component is integrated in the computation of fragility curves, whereas the epistemic component provides the confidence intervals; (c) computation of fragility curves with Monte Carlo method and verification of the validity of the log-normal assumption.
