The Swedish pulp and paper industry (PPI) must increase energy efficiency to remain competitive on the global market, which has experienced entries from countries with cheaper energy and raw material supplies. Interactions among variables for energy use, production, energy management, electricity price and firm characteristics (FC), in different types of mills, i.e., pulp, paper and integrated mills, in Sweden from 2006 to 2015 indicate that correlations among the studied variables were different in different types of mills. This difference between types of mills seemed to originate partly from varying accessibility to production residue that could be used for energy. For all types of mills, variation of electricity prices did not correlate significantly with energy efficiency during the study period. The studied FC were firm's age, number of employees, number of companies in company group, net sales and profit for the year. Energy efficiency was more affected by the variables characterizing energy and production compared to the variables representing FC. This study also suggested presence of possible discrepancies between FC that were perceived as barriers to energy management towards energy efficiency, according to previous studies, and what was shown by the data combining variables representing energy use, production and FC. Pulp and paper mill effluent (PPME), a rich cellulosic material, was found to have great potential for biohydrogen production through a photofermentation process. However, pretreatments were needed for degrading the complex structure of PPME before biohydrogen production. The aim of this study was to gain further insight into the effect of an ultrasonication process on PPME as a pretreatment method and on photofermentative biohydrogen production using Rhodobacter sphaeroides NCIMB. The ultrasonication amplitudes and times were varied between 30–90% and 15–60 min, respectively, and no dilution or nutrient supplementation was introduced during the biohydrogen production process. A higher biohydrogen yield, rate, light efficiency and COD removal efficiency were attained in conditions using ultrasonicated PPME. Among these different pretreatment conditions, PPME with ultrasonication pretreatment employing an amplitude of 60% and time of 45 min (A60:T45) gave the highest yield and rate of 5.77 mL H 2 /mL medium and 0.077 mL H 2 /mL h, respectively, while the raw PPME without ultrasonication showed a significantly lower yield and rate of 1.10 mL H 2 /mL medium and 0.015 mL H 2 /mL h, respectively. The results of this study demonstrated the potential of using ultrasonication as a pretreatment for PPME because the yield and rate of biohydrogen production were highly enhanced compared to the raw PPME. Abstract: The pulp and paper industry is one of the most energy-intensive industries worldwide. In 2007, it accounted for 5% of total global industrial energy consumption and 2% of direct industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. An energy audit is a primary step toward improving energy efficiency at the facility level. This paper describes a plant-wide energy audit aimed at identifying energy conservation and CO2 mitigation opportunities at a paper mill in Guangdong province, China. We describe the energy audit methods, relevant Chinese standards, methods of calculating energy and carbon indicators, baseline energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the audited paper mill, and nine energy-efficiency improvement opportunities identified by the audit. For each of the nine options, we evaluate the energy conservation and associated CO2 mitigation potential. The total technical energy conservation potential for these nine opportunities is 967.8terajoules (TJ), and the total CO2 mitigation potential is equal to 93,453tonnes CO2 annually, representing 14.4% and 14.7%, respectively, of the mill’s total energy consumption and CO2 emissions during the audit period. Abstract The paper drying process has the highest level of energy consumption in the pulp and paper production process. Analysis and optimization of the energy system during the paper drying process is critical for improving the energy efficiency of the entire paper mill. In the existing model for the paper drying process, the solution requires accurate boundary conditions such as the air temperature and humidity of the pocket area and the cylinder surface temperature, which are very difficult to obtain in the papermaking process. This can result in significant deviations between the model solution and the actual production process. This paper focuses on the single-tier dryer cylinder-based paper drying process that has been widely used with high-speed papermaking machines in recent years. A mathematical model is proposed based on real-time data. The verification via industrial production demonstrates that the proposed model is reliable for the paper drying process. Based on the simulation results, two optimization operations have been proposed. The energy consumption decreases from 1.51 t steam/t paper to 1.44 t steam/t paper, 4.6% of the steam and 1.26 × 106 RMB can be saved for a medium-scale paper mill with the annual production capacity of 105 t paper. Abstract: Energy conservation is a central concern of the current industrial world, where increasing efficient energy usage is the only way of reducing a high energy demand. In the present study the optimization of a pulp and paper mill with a cogeneration plant has been carried out. The optimization was realized with a methodology which includes exergy, exergoeconomics, thermoeconomics and pinch analysis. The proposed methodology was useful in determining not only the best plant operating conditions but also establishing the components or subsystems with the highest irreversibilities. As a result of the study, operation changes in the recovery boiler, the turbogenerator, the thermal treatment and the deaerator were realized. Due to the higher irreversibility in the actual evaporator line, a new line of evaporators was proposed. Also, an innovative heat recycling technology as to the use of heat transformers was proposed in order to reduce waste heat discharged to the atmosphere. The results obtained with the proposed methodology, which integrates the different optimization methods, allowed reaching higher efficiencies and lower operational costs than those obtained with the optimization methods working separately. Abstract Long term electricity consumption forecasting has been extensively investigated in recent years in different countries due to its economic and social importance. In this context, the long term electricity consumption projections of a country or region are highly relevant for decision-making of companies and organizations operating in any energy system. In this paper, it is proposed a methodology that combines the bottom-up approach with hierarchical linear models for long term electricity consumption forecasting of a particular industrial sector considering energy efficiency scenarios. In addition, the Bayesian inference is used for model parameter estimation and, enabling the inclusion of uncertainty in the forecasts produced by the model. The model was applied to the Brazilian pulp and paper industry and it was able to capture the trajectory of the real consumption observed during the 2008–2014 period. The model was also used to generate long term point and probability distribution forecasts for the period ranging from 2015 until 2050. The growing concern for the environment and imperative need for technology-enabled energy efficient freight transportation have led to the development of dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) in many countries like Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and India. The rapid expansion of DFCs is needed to improve supply chain efficiency. DFCs have potential to decongest existing rail networks, reduce the modal share of road freight transportation, and decarbonize freight transport sector. This study attempts to use transition management theory for identifying enablers of DFC for the transition from road to rail freight transportation. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is employed to confirm the three-level transition management framework for these enablers. This paper also proposes an eight-level hierarchical total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) based model for explicating the inter-relationships among the enablers of DFC to decarbonize freight transportation and achieve sustainability in the freight transport sector. Eventually, this paper provides empirical evidence to identify and validate the enablers of DFC through the lens of transition management theory. This paper also highlights the role of 'adoption of advanced technologies' to achieve sustainability in freight transportation. Energy is one of the essential components for the social and economic growth of urban and rural communities worldwide. However, the lack of energy supply is one of the most significant challenges facing remote or local communities in Nigeria. Distributed generation systems based on renewable energy, conventional sources, or hybrid resources are possible energy production solutions for these communities. This paper, therefore, focused on providing an energy generation system based on photovoltaics (PV) and diesel generators (DG) for stand-alone applications. A comparative analysis was carried out to assess the impact of control strategies, namely load following (LF), cycle charging (CC), and combined dispatch (CD). The designed energy systems: 60 kW PV, 78.69 kW PV, PV-DG-LF, PV-DG-CC, and PV-DG-CD were simulated using HOMER Pro while technical, economic, and environmental indices were used as performance metrics. Simulation results showed that 60 kW PV generated 84,927 and 75,859 kWh, without and with temperature effect, respectively, with the corresponding unmet electric load (UEL) of 13.8 and 14.2%. The result further demonstrated that PV-DG-LF is the optimal design with the highest renewable penetration of 80.7% and the least annual total fuel consumption (TFC) of 6,594 l. The economic results further confirm the suitability of PV-DG-LF with the lowest fuel cost (FC) and moderate cost of energy (COE) of $219,934 and 0.302 $/kWh, respectively. The PV-DG-LF is found to be more environmentally friendly, with the least annual CO 2 emission of 16,629.652 kg. Abstract Industry is one of the highest energy consumption sector: some facilities like steelworks, foundries, or paper mills are highly energy-intensive activities. Many countries have already implemented subsidies on energy efficiency in generation and utilisation, with the aim of decreasing overall consumption and energy intensity of gross domestic product. Meanwhile, researchers have increased interest into alternative energy systems to decrease pollution and use of fossil fuels. Hydrogen, in particular, is proposed as a clean alternative energy vector, as it can be used as energy storage mean or to replace fossil fuels, e.g. for transport. This work analyses the re-vamping of the energy generation system of a paper mill by means of reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs). The aim is not only to increase efficiency on energy generation, but also to create a polygeneration system where hydrogen is produced. Application on a real industrial facility, based in Italy with a production capacity of 60000 t/y of paper, is analysed. First, the current energy system is studied. Then, a novel system based on RSOC is proposed. Each component of the systems (both existing and novel) is defined using operational data, technical datasheet, or models defined with thermodynamic tools. Then, the interaction between them is studied. Primary energy analysis on the novel system is performed, and saving with respect to the current configuration is evaluated. Even if the complexity of the system increases, results show that saving occurs between 2 and 6%. Hydrogen generation is assessed, comparing the RSOC integrated system with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, in terms of both primary energy and economics. Results exhibit significant primary energy and good economic performance on hydrogen production with the novel system proposed (hydrogen cost decreases from 10 €/kg to at least 8 €/kg). Abstract Whilst a plethora of literature has viewed technological progress as one of the critical influencing factors in relation to energy consumption and CO 2 emissions, little effort has been made to identify the sectoral differences in the relationship between technological progress and CO 2 emissions. Thereby, this paper remedies the inadequacies in the extant literature by empirically investigating the impact of technological progress on CO 2 emissions, specifically taking into account its heterogeneous effect in various economic sectors. This paper first decomposes the effect of technological progress as taking place in heavy industry, in light industry, in construction industry, and in service industry. A panel quantile regression approach and a balanced city panel data model are then applied, covering the period 2001–2013 in China. The empirical results show that technological progress in heavy industry and light industry surprisingly facilitates a higher level of CO 2 emissions, despite its prominent contribution to energy efficiency improvement. Meanwhile, as distinct from the effect it shows in the heavy and light industries, technological progress in construction and service industries exerts a negative effect on CO 2 emissions. Additionally, this paper further discovers that the strength of the multiple impacts of technological progress also varies with the level of emitters. By studying the heterogeneous effect brought about by technological progress in different economic sectors and emitters, this paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between CO 2 emissions and technological progress. Abstract Demand response programs offer efficient solutions for many power system problems, such as high generation cost, high demand's peak to average ratio, high emissions, reliability issues and congestion in generation, transmission and distribution systems. Their main function is to assist power systems during peak demand hours and also during contingencies. They are a subcategory of the family of demand side management (DSM) strategies. DR programs are classified into two broad categories; price-based DR programs and incentive-based DR programs. In order to exploit their full potential, DR programs must be implemented optimally. Such a problem, which here is referred to as "DR optimisation problem", is a hot research topic and has been frequently researched in the literature. This paper aims to review different research works on DR optimisation problems. Based on the conducted review, some directions for future research are proposed. Abstract This paper proposes a quantity-quality-based optimization method of indoor thermal environment design that emphasizes entransy and exergy analysis. We scrutinized the different focuses of entransy and exergy in examining an energy-related phenomenon or process, and pointed out the need for integrating entransy and exergy for the optimization of indoor thermal environment design. The proposed method contributes to identifying the most energy-efficient solution for attaining the same level of indoor thermal comfort for end users by quantifying the entransy and exergy efficiency of active technologies. With this method, a benchmark technical solution was properly determined and benchmarks for entransy dissipation and exergy loss during the process of thermal environment design were quantified. Entransy dissipation and exergy loss under common technologies were compared with the benchmark values. The concepts of relative entransy savings and relative exergy savings were defined as the evaluation indexes of technical energy efficiency. Referencing winter indoor thermal environment design for residential buildings in hot-summer and cold-winter (HSCW) regions in China, the proposed method was applied to assess the energy efficiency of different heating methods, including an inverter air conditioner, an "air source heat pump + floor radiation," a "wall-hanging gas heater + floor radiation," a "wall-hanging gas heater + radiator," and an oil-filled radiator. This paper recommended that the "air source heat pump + floor radiation" be used for residential buildings in winter in HSCW regions to improve energy efficiency. In addition, the optimization results of the proposed method were compared with that of traditional energy and exergy analysis methods. The results showed that the new method more accurately analyzed the energy flow in indoor thermal environment design, and therefore can serve as an improved way of thinking about follow-up studies on the optimization of heat pump units and the operation strategies of floor radiant heating systems. Abstract As a potential energy utilization paradigm, power and natural gas coupled system (PGCS) with gas turbines and power to gas (P2G) provides an effective approach to improve the energy efficiency with an environmentally friendly and reliable energy supply. To fully exploit complementary potentialities of PGCS and accommodate wind power with P2G devices under system uncertainties, a novel robust multi-objective power and gas flow (RM-PGF) incorporating a two-stage interval robust dispatch is proposed in this paper. Besides, to achieve a complementary energy utilization with an information privacy and a decentralized autonomy for these two sub-systems, this paper establishes a novel two-layer convex decoupled-synergetic framework for PGCS. In the outer optimization, the original nonconvex issue is convexified into an iterative second-order cone programming (SCOP) through a penalty convex–concave procedure (PCCP). While in the inner optimization, the convexified RM-PGF is solved with three decoupled-synergetic strategies, including alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), auxiliary problem principle (APP) and generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) based strategies. Finally, numerical simulations validate the superiority of the proposed RM-PGF with P2Gs for wind power accommodation, as well as the computational efficiency and robustness of these convex decoupled-synergetic strategies PCCP-ADMM, PCCP-APP and PCCP-GBD. Abstract This paper reports a review of an environmentally clean and efficient source of energy such as solid oxide fuel cell hybrid systems. Due to climate concerns, most nations are seeking alternative means of generating energy from a clean, efficient and environmental-friendly method. However, this has proven a big hurdle for both academic and industry researchers over many years. Currently, practical and technically feasible solution can be obtained via an integration of a microturbine and a fuel cell (hybrid systems). Combining the two distinct systems in a hybrid arrangement the efficiency of the microturbine increases from 25 to 30% to the 60–65% range. Hence, this paper outlines an engineering power generation solution towards the acute global population growth, the growing need, environmental concerns, intelligent use of energy with attendant environmental and hybrid system layouts concerning arising problems and tentative proposed solutions. Furthermore, advantages of a solid oxide fuel cell hybrid systems with respect to the other technologies are identified and discussed rationally. Special attention is devoted to modelling with software and emulator rigs and system prototypes. The paper also reviews the limitations and the benefits of these hybrid systems in relationship with energy, environment and sustainable development. Abstract In 2011, the Danish government published an energy strategy for Denmark where one of the main targets are that Denmark should be a fossil-free society by 2050. Calculations show, that in order to reach this goal it is necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the existing building stock by 50% on average. Since a 50% reduction is obviously not possible for all buildings, those that can should aim for a so-called "deep energy renovation", i.e. reducing the energy consumption to a level corresponding to that of new buildings or even more. This paper describes two case studies where multi-story apartment buildings have undergone deep energy renovation. "Traneparken" where the expected energy use after renovation aimed at a level corresponding to that of a new building according to the Danish Building Regulations from 2015. "Sems Have" where the aim was to go even further and meet the requirements expected for new buildings in 2020, i.e. corresponding to the Danish "nearly zero energy"-definition according to the EPBD. The paper reports on calculations and measurements of energy savings, the economy of the projects and looks at the added benefits or co-benefits that residents, housing association and society in general have achieved in addition to significant energy savings. Abstract With the revolution of the traditional economic and social pattern based on centralized fossil energy consumption, the regional integrated energy system (RIES) has gained rapid development in recent years for achieving higher energy efficiency. This paper expands the Demand Response (DR) concept to the RIES and presents an optimal operation model of RIES considering the DR mechanism on the energy price. In this paper, a comprehensive DR strategy combining energy price and different loads is firstly developed to exploit the demand flexibility of RIES in the DR model established. Based on the DR modeling of the RIES, an operation optimization model with environmental, economic benefits and energy supply reliability as objective functions has been firstly established in detail. Secondly, a complete scheduling scheme is built based on the energy consumption characteristics and system operation characteristic of the integrated energy system. The model presented could reduce the cost of system without causing a significant amount of environmental pollution, and improve the energy efficiency of the RIES efficiently. Besides, the scheduling strategy proposed could also provide support for the operation strategy of integrated energy system under the energy development. Hopefully, this paper will provide reference for future research and engineering projects on DR programs in the RIES. The European Union targets for 27% renewable energy share by 2030. At the same time, all new buildings should be nearly zero energy buildings from 2020 onwards. A major obstacle to these objectives is a combination of current economic stagnation and limited investors' confidence, which leads to low investment proportion. Despite many renewable energy technologies are already at a competitive level, the implementation rate in buildings is still low. In this paper, we focus on advances in efficient mechanisms to overcome non-technical barriers to the increase of renewable energy applications in buildings, such as Energy Performance Contracting (EPC). Tertiary sector holds a huge untapped potential for such applications, especially in Southern Europe. The Trust-EPC-South European initiative, implemented in six southern EU countries with a mix of beginner and intermediate energy service markets, aims at encouraging the financing of sustainable energy solutions in the tertiary sector, by creating a framework for standardization, assessment and benchmarking, thus improving trust and confidence in the financing parties. This paper presents three case studies in Greece, a Mediterranean family resort hotel, a resort and spa hotel and an office building. The installation of renewable energy measures, including photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems and heat pumps, was examined and their EPC potential was rated, by using the described standardization and benchmarking methodology. Their economic savings range from 3 to 23% on yearly energy costs, at a discounted payback of 3–6 years, depending on the measure. A sensitivity analysis shows the impact of the variation of technical and economic parameters on the EPC projects feasibility. The standardization practice applied is expected to support the project actors in securing appropriate financing and eventually proceed with the renewable energy installations through the EPC. Energy consumption has promoted a continuous development for economy and society, but it has also brought serious environmental pollution problems which endanger public health. In order to focus on the impact of PM 2.5 emissions from future energy consumption on human health better, this paper estimated PM 2.5 emissions caused by energy consumption in Beijing in 2020,2025 and 2030 by setting the baseline scenario, emission reduction scenario, intensified emission reduction scenario and the data of the base year 2015, which will be 162.6 thousand tons, 195.9 thousand tons and 235.9 thousand tons in the baseline scenario, 143.1 thousand tons, 151.8 thousand tons and 160.9 thousand tons under the emission reduction scenario, and 132.6 thousand tons, 130.2 thousand tons, 127.9 thousand tons under the intensified emission reduction scenario. Finally the paper measured the number of different health effect ends caused by PM 2.5 emissions and the economic loss. The results showed that there was a rapid increase, a mild increase and a moderate decrease in energy consumption and PM 2.5 emissions in Beijing under the three scenarios from 2015 to 2030. Besides, under the same scenario and the same concentration level baseline, the number of the internal medicine (over the age of 15) was the largest, and the economic loss caused by total death rate was the biggest. To reduce the dependence on fossil fuel, Process Integration and energy efficiency are crucial in chemical process industry to minimise the consumption of fossil fuels and electricity demand through Heat Exchanger Network (HEN). Pinch Analysis is well established to optimal HEN design to maximize the energy recovery in a process. The stream matches for energy recovery in HEN is important to ensure the temperature potential is not wasted, which the temperature potential could be converted into mechanical work. Therefore, Exergy Analysis has been introduced to work with Pinch Analysis, which ensure the heat recovery stream matches with appropriate temperature differences to minimise the work potential (exergy) loss. This paper demonstrates how Pinch Analysis and Exergy Analysis is simultaneously applied to determine exergy targets (rejection, requirement and avoidable losses) in low temperature HEN. A novel numerical tool known as Exergy Problem Table Algorithm (Ex-PTA), is proposed in this paper as a numerical method to the conventional graphical representation in Extended Pinch Analysis and Design (ExPAnD) method. The proposed tool produces more realistic and achievable results. The net shaft work requirement of the refrigeration system is also determined together with the system COP. This paper explored the effect of setting heat exchangers' minimum approach temperature (ΔT min ) on the exergy targets for low temperature HEN design. The external utility requirement and unavoidable exergy losses increased with ΔT min , while avoidable exergy losses and energy recovery reduced with respect to ΔT min . The net power requirement of the system increased with the ΔT min increment, however, the system COP reduced due to higher increment rate of compression compared to expansion work generation. The optimal ΔT min was determined at 2 °C for heat recovery system in the case study based on super-targeting approach, which considers the total annualized cost, operating cost and capital cost. This paper introduces a growth model that considers the indicator of economic complexity as a measure of capabilities for exporting the high value-added (sophisticated) products. Empirically, the paper analyzes the effects of the renewable and the non-renewable energy consumption on the economic growth in the panel data of 29 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries for the period from 1990 to 2013. For this purpose, the paper considers the panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and the panel quantile regression (PQR) estimations. The paper finds that not only the economic complexity, but also both the non-renewable and the renewable energy consumption are positively associated with a higher rate of economic growth. This paper proposes a global driving cycle construction method based on the real-time traffic information, which can realize online optimal energy management for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The construction method is mainly divided into three parts: the construction of velocity segments database; the construction of real-time traffic information tensor model database, and the construction of real-time global driving cycle. For the acquisition of the real-time traffic information, a two-step completion method is adopted to obtain the complete and accuracy traffic information; for the driving cycle construction, the velocity segment database, the road section velocity and the Markov transfer matrix with Monte Carlo are used to generate velocity segments which constitute the global driving cycle. With the updated real-time traffic information, the global driving cycle is reconstructed which further reflect the real-time road condition. The efficient dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is applied to realize online energy management in PHEVs. Its simulation shows that the fuel efficiency improves by at least 19.83% compared with charge depleting and charge sustain (CDCS) control strategy. Combining cost-optimal solutions to reach nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) in compliance with European policies is an ongoing challenge. Energy consumption can be reduced evaluating different configurations at the design stage and implementing the most appropriate solutions according to the building and the location. This paper develops a simulation-based optimization framework of cost-optimal choices and energy efficiency measures for new buildings. It combines energy and cost simulations using a sequential search technique to find the most effective combination of energy efficiency and renewable energy measures starting from a base configuration. The model is applied to a residential building prototype, taking into consideration hourly climatic data, construction methods, cost data and energy consumption. A cost database and a library of potential measures, related to envelope, appliances and systems, have been established and used within the optimization process. The potential impact of climate change on the estimated cooling loads has been included in the calculations. The paper shows the feasibility of European requirements for new NZEBs located in different cities. It describes how to best achieve the NZEB design at the lowest cost in 14 locations across Europe. Results highlight how the cost-optimal measures vary with climate and how in each location final selected options differ. Insulation and building tightness appear essential in colder climates, while efficient appliances and lighting are key measures in warmer locations. A key finding of the research is that a source energy reduction of 90% and beyond is feasible for new constructions in all locations. Results also show how efficient lighting and appliances considerably impact the building energy performance. Refrigerators are a common appliance in developed and emerging economies around the world. These appliances consume significant energy globally and improving their efficiency is an important aspect of future climate change mitigation. It is widely understood that the energy consumption of household refrigerating appliances is strongly influenced by room temperature and many analysts have identified ambient temperature as the most important factor in normal use. Room temperature has two main effects on the energy consumption of refrigerating appliances. Firstly, the temperature difference between the compartment and the room dictates the heat gain into the appliance through the wall insulation and door seals. A second effect is that a change in room temperature affects the condensing temperature. An increase in room temperature reduces overall refrigeration system efficiency by increasing the difference between the evaporating and condensing temperature. This paper examines laboratory data for 111 appliances where energy consumption is measured at four ambient temperatures from 10 °C to 40 °C. Field data for 235 appliances in homes is also examined. This is more complex to analyse, but it does provide useful information on underlying energy changes due to changes in room temperature during normal use. This paper determines the ratio of energy at 16–32 °C (energy conditions in IEC62552-3) and explores the shape of the energy curve at intermediate temperatures in order to develop a generalised energy curve as a function of temperature for the refrigerating appliances measured. The field data gave highly comparable shape data to that measured in the laboratory. The results provide a useful method to estimate the likely power consumption of different appliance types under a wide range of operating conditions, even where limited data is available. Financial issues have been always one of major priorities in scheduling of energy systems. Although these systems are able to serve several types of energy demands but generated emission by these systems is a challenging problem. Since improvement of each one of mentioned issues has negative effects on the other issue therefore a trade-off solution is necessary to be obtained between these issues. In this paper, a multi-objective model has been presented to satisfy both economic and environmental objectives of a hub energy system in the presence of demand response program. In the proposed paper, ε-constraint and max–min fuzzy satisfying methods have been employed to solve and select the trade-off solution. The main reason of implementation of demand response program is to reduce operation cost and improve environmental performance of hub energy system. In fact, demand response program transfers some percentage of load from peak periods to off-peak periods to flatten load curve which leads to reduction of cost and emission. A mixed-integer linear programming has been used to simulate the proposed model and general algebraic modeling system software has been utilized to solve it. A sample hub energy system containing renewable and non-renewable energy resources has been studied and comparison results are presented to validate efficiency of proposed techniques. Price based demand response (PBDR) is one of the two major DR programs. In this paper, we first introduce the pricing theories in economics, the pricing of electricity and the development of electricity pricing in China. Then, we present a detailed discussion on the PBDR strategies in the DSM of smart grid. Also, the research status of PBDR is reviewed. Countries worldwide have set national targets for energy production from renewable sources. Yet, while many governments are committed to more renewable energy, obtaining permission to site installations is becoming increasingly difficult. With large tracts of land for renewables becoming intensely contested, countries seeking to meet their renewables targets are directing attention also towards tapping the potential in the urban environment through smaller-scale facilities. These entail other challenges, and countries are seeking ways to overcome them. The focus of this paper is on one, still evolving, type of renewable energy technology: small-scale wind turbines (SSWT). The paper presents a review of current but limited international academic knowledge on the land-regulation aspects of siting SSWT in countries that already have experience with such installations, including the USA, UK and New Zealand. The paper also reports on a comparative analysis of the land-related regulations and practices in two selected Mediterranean jurisdictions – Spain (Catalonia) and Israel. The approach of this study is exploratory, relying on analysis of legal and policy documents complemented by field work through in-depth interviews with key-stakeholders in both jurisdictions. The overall aim of this study is to examine different approaches of planning systems to new technologies. The findings show that despite their shared objective factors, the two jurisdictions have adopted almost opposite approach to regulating SSWTs. The findings, therefore, suggest that the incorporation of an unknown technology within the city requires a change of mindset both among the officials and among the city residents. A more effective regulatory framework might therefore entails a combination of strategic thinking, an experimental approach and the capacity to learn from cross-national comparative experiences. Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) has dual aims to reduce emission production and stimulate adoption of long-term abatement technology. Whilst it has generally achieved its first aim, its issues are hindering the accomplishment of the second. Several solutions have been proposed to improve ETS’s efficacy, yet none of them have considered the advancement of Industry 4.0. This paper proposes a novel ETS model customised for Industry 4.0 integration. It incorporates blockchain technology to address ETS’s management and fraud issues whilst it utilizes a reputation system in a new approach to improve ETS efficacy. Specific design of how the blockchain technology and reputation system are used to achieve these objectives is showed within this paper. The case study demonstrates the inner working of reputation-based trading system—in which reputation signifies participants performance and commitment toward emission reduction effort. Multi-criteria analysis is used to evaluate the proposed scheme against conventional ETS model. There is a growing interest in developing Inter-Plant Heat Integration (IPHI) methods for reducing energy consumptions and emissions beyond that of independent plants. However, practical IPHI problems present complexities as boundaries for simultaneous intra- and inter-plant heat integration are considered. Pinch Analysis (PA) can mitigate these complexities by elucidating design insights before developing more detailed inter-plant Heat Exchanger Networks (HENs). In this paper, a novel screening algorithm based on PA and the theoretical maximum inter-plant heat recovery potential Q r e c max is proposed for practical IPHI problems. By using this screening algorithm, a large-scale IPHI problem including multiple plants is divided into several smaller sections with each section including two or three plants. Utilizing this algorithm allows for easier calculation and improved total heat recovery potentials approaching to Q r e c max . The final inter-plant HEN configuration(s) for the segregated IPHI scheme(s) are easily developed separately using PA or Mathematical Programming (MP). Before these two steps, the selection of participating streams for IPHI from individual plants is also recommended. An electric aircraft propulsion system utilizes a high efficiency motor to generate thrust for electric aircraft. However, it can be challenging to maintain high efficiency for the fixed pitch propeller, which is commonly used in electric aircraft, through all phases of the flight. This paper investigates the power demands of the electric aircraft during the climb and the cruise phases according to the flight profile, and presents a model to estimate the energy consumption per flight. Simulation results suggest that the efficiency in the climb and the cruise phases can affect the energy consumption of an electric aircraft. Efficiency during the climb phase can have a significant effect on the capacity of the electric aircraft propulsion system. Based on the aforementioned results, this paper proposes a novel approach to achieve high efficiency, in which the optimal efficiency points of the electric aircraft propulsion system in the climb and the cruise phases can be obtained by solving an optimization problem with minimizing the energy consumption per flight as the object function and under the constraints that the climb and cruise phases must be successful. For testing purposes, the proposed method is adopted to the design of the electric aircraft propulsion system on a specific two-seater electric aircraft. Experimental results obtained from real flights suggest that the proposed method can reduce the energy consumption of the electric aircraft by over 10%, while reducing the capacity demand for the electric aircraft propulsion system. The paper presents an exergo-economic based design and analysis of a forward-feed multi-effect mechanical vapor compression desalination system. The analysis is focused on estimating the energy consumption, exergy destruction, Second Law efficiency, and product cost for a different number of evaporation effects. In addition, a detailed heat exchanger design is also presented to estimate the heat transfer coefficients, areas, and pressure drop in the evaporators and feed preheaters. Finally, the cost flow diagram is provided to highlight the monetary cost of each stream as well as product cost which is compared with a conventional method. The values of specific energy consumption, Second Law efficiency and product cost from the current analysis are observed to be ranging from 7.67 to 11.36 kWh/m 3 , 7 to 11%, and 0.86 to 1.19 $/m 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the effect of a number of evaporators, compressor efficiency, evaporation temperature, interest rate, cost index factor and unit electricity cost on the plant performance is also discussed in the paper. The paper addresses the issue of the transition from a traditional electrical system without automation to a newer active and smart system allowing the possibility of implementing Demand Side Management policies, for little islands not supplied by the main grid. In particular, the paper focuses on two main topics related to the definition of: • an effective control, monitoring and communication system as a tool for the full exploitation of the opportunities given by Demand Response policies; • some solutions for the automation of the end-users’ electrical installations, in order to offer to the utility flexibility to be used for the improvement of the generation and distribution efficiency. After a brief discussion on the international regulatory framework on automation and ICT applications for power systems, the paper presents a feasibility study, based on the characteristics of the island of Lampedusa, of a hierarchical architecture of a suitable control system and of some DSM enabling solutions for residential end-users. The proposed solutions are defined taking into account some main elements: • distribution grids in small islands are generally equipped with outdated and hardly automatable devices; • utilities in small islands have reduced budget for new investments; • not less important, the most of the inhabitants has low income and unfamiliarity with automation. Both energy and water are important resources for human and should be investigated in an integrated way. The paper examines the implications of improving energy efficiency for water resources to contribute to the understanding of energy-water nexus. The paper first develops a mathematical model to link energy efficiency and water withdrawals and consumption. Using the model and the UK energy and water data, the paper then investigates the implications of improving energy efficiency of thermal power technology for freshwater, tidal and sea water in the UK. Results show that when the energy efficiency increases averagely by 10%, the total water withdrawals decrease by 1.65 × 10 6 Megaliter (ML) per year, and the total water consumption reduces by 2.89 × 10 4 ML per year. The saved freshwater withdrawals account for 0.43% of total public water supply in England and Wales in 2013, and could support 138,462 households. The water resources have different sensitivity to the improvement of energy efficiency. The sea water withdrawals are the most sensitive to the improvement of energy efficiency, followed by tidal sea water withdrawals and freshwater withdrawals. Results provide significant informative implications for energy-water nexus, and suggests that it is time to consider improving energy efficiency to address the emerging energy and water challenges. The allocation of carbon emission quotas is recognized as a fundamental and critical step towards the establishment of an effective nationwide carbon emissions trading (CET) market in China. This paper aims to examine the quota allocation pertaining to China's east coastal areas. These regions are pioneers in reformation and the domestic heavy emitters. In this paper, a multi-criteria decision analysis model is proposed. This model is based on the principles of efficiency and equity. In order to reflect the true efficiency of carbon emissions, a weighted Russell direction distance model is employed. Three criteria, namely capacity, responsibility and potential, are used to evaluate the degrees of equity. Furthermore, different situations are set to evaluate the related indicators. The results indicate the following: (1) Industrial provinces have less carbon emission quota increments. (2) The Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone has notably improved energy efficiency, and future quota increments correspond with the zone's current carbon emissions. (3) Circum-Bohai Sea Economic Zone will be a major buyer of carbon emission quotas, while Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Zone currently receives surplus quota. (4) The overall allocation of quotas converts from uneven to even as a result of GDP growth. One-third of global energy demand as well as CO 2 emissions is accounted to industrial processes. In particular, over 30% of total industrial energy consumption is attributed to the iron and steel, cement and refining industry. The aim of the present paper is to review crosscutting technologies and measures adopted to improve energy efficiency in the main Italian industrial sectors regulated by the recent EU legislation on integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC-IED). In fact, 2010/75/EU Directive on industrial emissions, a general improvement on the entire environmental performance of the industrial installations is pursued by taking into account relevant environmental issues, such as emissions into water, air, soil as well as energy efficiency, waste production, recovering and recycling, restoration of the site upon definitive cessation of activities. Moreover, according to 2010/75/EU Directive, IPPC permits should be based on Best Available Techniques (BAT) aimed to reach an adequate level of environmental protection and should establish all the necessary measures including operating conditions, emission limit values for relevant polluting substances as well as monitoring requirements. Thus, in the present paper an assessment of Best Available Techniques (BAT) related to energy efficiency in the main Italian industrial installations is carried out on the base of the analysis on the IPPC permits released by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, and made available on its web site. As a result a significant improvement in energy efficiency was assessed. In fact, many process units were upgraded, by major revamping or even by replacing the process completely with one showing better performances. Finally, since energy efficiency is at its best at the beginning of the life cycle of the plant, operators, whenever necessary, periodically monitor and measure the actual energy performance of their own installations for process control and maintenance purposes. This paper presents a novel research work on the potential benefits of using, a unique and sustainable energy source - the human-power. The paper discusses the benefits and the practicality of using human-power as a domestic energy source to power electrical and electronic devices and explores the benefit of its use in a more diverse perspective for possible change in behaviour and energy savings for improved sustainability in the society. The economic and sustainability gains of using Human-Powered Products (HPPs) are investigated. Two studies have been conducted, the first is a study which involves assessing the environmental impact of a human-powered products via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA); and the second is a case study called Home User Study (HUS), where the technology is experimentally tested. The human-powered system is used to explore the real benefits and life-cycle analysis towards assessing the sustainability of such products. The Home User Study (HUS) has been conducted to explore the in-situ use of human-powered systems using a new prototype that has been built and deployed. The study has used a monitoring device to measure the outcome of the interaction between the user and human-powered products. The results interestingly have revealed various other forms of benefits beyond renewable energy that could add extra motives for using human-powered products, such as health benefits. The paper also puts an emphasis on the opportunity of using Human-Powered Products which can be perceived as a great viable solution against counter measuring social issues such as physical inactivity and increasing sedentary behaviour. The results of the theoretical study indicate that Human-Powered Products (HPP) do not offer significant financial savings. The results of the HUS indicate that using human-powered products for health prospective outweigh the benefit gained from the prospective of energy savings and renewable energy. Based on the findings of this study, the paper suggests an approach that shows how the implementation of Human-powered systems could provide the opportunity to sustainable energy generation and energy savings, but in all cases they can be retained through a motivational drive in improving the health benefit via encouraging physical activities. The conventional powertrain has seen a continuous wave of energy optimization, focusing heavily on boosting and engine downsizing. This trend is pushing OEMs to consider turbocharging as a premium solution for exhaust energy recovery. Turbocharger is an established, economically viable solution which recovers waste energy from the exhaust gasses, and in the process providing higher pressure and mass of air to the engine. However, a turbocharger has to be carefully matched to the engine. The process of matching a turbocharger to an engine is implemented in the early stages of design, through air system simulations. In these simulations, a turbocharger component is represented largely by performance maps and it serves as a boundary condition to the engine. The thermodynamic parameters of a turbocharger are calculated through the performance maps which are usually generated experimentally in gas test stands and used as look-up table in the engine models. Thus, the operational of the engine is dictated by the air flow thermodynamic parameters (pressure, temperature and mass flow) from the turbocharger compressor; this in turn will determine the thermodynamic parameters for the exhaust gas entering the turbocharger turbine. The importance and its sensitivity dictate that any heat transfer affecting the experiments to acquire the performance maps will cause errors in the characterization of a turbocharger. This will consequently lead to inaccurate predictions from the engine model if the heat transfer effects are not properly accounted for. The current paper provides a comprehensive review on how the industry and academics are addressing the heat transfer issue through advancing researches. The review begins by defining the main issues related with heat transfer in turbochargers and the state-of-the-art research looking into it. Distributed energy system (DES) has received much attention in the world to solve the conflict between energy saving and emission reduction. The cutting-edge DES can provide multi-products for the diversity of user, such as cooling, heating, power and even desalination, through a cascade utilization of energy. Furthermore, a large-scale application of renewable energy has been considered in DES with a good interaction to grid. Thus, a dynamic balance between the supply and demand sides is urgently required to maximize the benefit from DES to end-user. All of these new features are extending the technical boundary of the conventional DES, and pose a challenge to flexible mechanism of DES's operation. This paper provides a guided technological tour on the proposed concept--flexible DES (FDES), through a literature research, in terms of features, definition, and capacity adjustment measures. In particular, one kind of FDES featured by the application of mixed working fluid (MWF) is highlighted as the main object in this paper through a summary on separation and mixing mechanism of MWF. An overview about the typical technologies to access such mechanisms, including T junction, ejector, cyclone and distillation, is presented to demonstrate advances and application potential of FDES. Finally, two representative cases from publications are briefly presented and discussed for existing configurations of FDES and possible application of separation and mixing technologies. The literature works in this paper proved a promising application prospect of the new concept FDES due to its significant performance improvement and flexible adjustment function. This paper presents an approach for designing power and water distribution networks involving the sizing, geographic location, as well as the economic, environmental and social impacts, and taking into account the multiplicity of criteria for the stakeholders involved in the development of operational policies and new facilities. In this paper is presented a method for defining solutions concerning to the design of power and water distribution networks based on a multi-stakeholder environment. A multi-objective model, considering economic, environmental and social factors, is used for illustrating how the different criteria, about priorities of the stakeholders, affect the design of the system and how to propose a solution for achieving a tradeoff between the multiple stakeholders. The proposed method was applied to an electric and water stressed scheme in the north of Mexico, the results show that the minimization of the dissatisfaction of the involved systems can provide an optimal solution that meets the objectives of all stakeholders. One of the main problems for adopting smart thermostats is consumers’ expectations about smart thermostats. Generally, the interfaces in smart thermostats and smart devices in the energy market are designed without consideration for the expectations of the customers or are not adjusting their operation according to the consumers’ expectations and behavior. Moreover, the business model does not consider one part of the product as the main link between customers and value propositions. This study shows a structure for creating a smart interface based on consumers’ expectations and shows an extension of the CANVAS business model. Furthermore, the paper re-defines the term “smart” in electric devices as the ability to adjust the system in order to reach the expectations of the consumer and to save energy. This term is not only defined in terms of saving energy but also it includes the customer’s expectations. If the system is only smart to control the temperature and save energy, the customer’s expectations may not always be achieved; thus, the smart devices are not successfully adopted in households. The design is based on artificial neural networks and a fuzzy logic controller to achieve the consumer’s expectations. The results show the interface operation on each block. The classification systems have to operate to detect changes in the customer’s market segment. The fuzzy logic controller tries to reach the customer’s expectations in order to move the customer into the energy saving market. This expectation interface tries to motivate designers to focus on consumer’s expectations for smart devices in the energy market. Not only are the energy requirements important to design a smart thermostat, but also the consumer’s expectations to create a successful smart thermostat in the electric market. Smart thermostats can reduce the consumption of electrical energy, but they need to be accepted. This interface provides an effective manner to connect the consumer’s expectations with the consumption of energy. This papers shows a proof of concept about intelligent interfaces. Energy poverty can be understood as the inability of a household to secure socially and materially the necessitated level of energy services in the home. This condition is described as either energy or fuel poverty and it has been recognized by the EU's so called “Third Energy Package”. The work in this field has identified a number of household-level factors that influence the likelihood of experiencing domestic deprivation, with particular emphasis being placed on understanding how education levels correlates to the phenomenon. In that perspective, and in order to study the dynamics of energy poverty in Greece, a questionnaire was prepared and distributed mainly by means of in-situ interviews and, in exceptional cases, in remote sessions. The evidence presented in this paper is based on a comprehensive study of 762 questionnaires mainly for Western Macedonia (43.6%) and Central Macedonia (42.6%), Greece. Using the quantitative data gathered, we measure the energy vulnerability concerning the quality of the housing–dwelling, the heating system, indoor thermal comfort and the net-income. The research is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to analyze residential energy, habitants’ behavior, and attitudes in the middle of the economic crisis in North Greece. It has been determined, that the middle class has become the most vulnerable class in that sense. A further scope of this paper is not only to present this data, which prove that domestic energy deprivation appears not only in Southern but also in Northern Greece, but also to discuss measures that can be adopted in order mitigate energy and social vulnerability of the middle class. Low grade energy streams are available in large quantities and end up as loss in the energy consumption in the United States. For sustainability and security of the energy future, various research efforts are under way to harness this low grade energy. This paper provides a review of low grade energy resources available in industry, and applications where that can be used. Then, an underdeveloped research area is identified in the integration of the low grade energy in process systems. Some of these areas include the use of low grade solar energy or flare systems, and applications include desalination, district heating, refrigeration, etc. A few applications related to saline agriculture are also identified. This work provides a basis where the recovery of low grade energy sources and subsequent integration can provide potential cost savings, environmental benefits and social impacts. In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) is employed to resolve the energy management problem of a plug-in hybrid electric bus (PHEB). Dynamic programming (DP), as a global optimization method, is inserted at each time step of the MPC, to solve the optimization problem regarding the prediction horizon. A multi-step Markov prediction model is constructed to forecast the near future driving velocities for the MPC. The battery SOC is restrained to fluctuate near a reference trajectory to ensure the global performance of MPC. Three novel restraining methods are proposed and compared in this paper. The resultant fuel economy performance with different SOC constraint methods are evaluated. Simulation results indicate that by restraining the battery SOC adaptively to the control variables gains the best fuel economy performance, and the fuel consumption of MPC is 8.7% less than a ruled based strategy. The efficiency benefits deriving from the staging of the evaporation process into multiple pressure levels are well known in the field of gas-steam natural gas combined cycles where dual and triple pressure bottoming cycles represent the standard layouts. A similar development of the cycle architecture has not been observed in the field of organic Rankine cycle systems (ORCs). In this paper the dual pressure layout is compared against the single pressure one at subcritical conditions in the utilization of a geothermal heat source in the range 100–200 °C, and considering a set of working fluids wide enough to take advantage of the features of both layouts. The paper proposes simple and unambiguous design guidelines to avoid the unnecessary complexity of the dual pressure layout when the single pressure one already ensures the highest power output, while taking advantage of its full potential in all the other conditions. Results show that the power output gains deriving from the dual pressure configuration are particularly high (up to 29%) at lower geothermal fluid temperatures (100–125 °C) and gradually diminish at higher temperatures (150–200 °C) where some of the selected fluids already obtain the best thermal matching with the heat source in the single pressure configuration. Power split configurations exhibit potential on decreasing fuel consumption. However, how to select the best power split configuration among all the possible configurations still need to be explored. In this paper, a one-dimensional searching ECMS (Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy) is developed to evaluate fuel consumption for input power split configuration. Additionally, a battery degradation model based on experimental data is applied to evaluate the battery degradation for input power split configuration. According to one-dimensional searching ECMS and battery degradation model, the impact of different input power split configurations on fuel consumption and battery degradation is investigated. Simulations show that configuration T1 has fuel consumption and battery degradation advantages for PHEV city bus application in China. These advantages are observed because the system efficiency operation points of configuration T1 are closer to the high efficiency area than the system efficiency operation points of other input power split configurations. Furthermore, according to the lever model and one-dimensional searching ECMS method, a power split configuration selection method is provided in this paper. The simulation results based on configuration selection method still indicate that configuration T1 appears to have the best fuel economy for PHEV city bus application. Over-capacity problem in refining sector and energy security for oil supply are critical issues for China’s oil industry. As governmental intervention plays a significant part in current and future development of oil industry, over-capacity problem would not be solved without macro-regulatory. Though China is promoting large-scale strategic reserve of crude oil, there is rare quantitative evaluation on the capability of the oil industry in dealing with import disruption. In this paper, a system dynamic model is established for oil supply chain analysis. Based on the model, a quantitative measurement is proposed to evaluate the over-capacity extent of refining industry. The over-capacity extent is classified into three levels, according to varied demand fluctuation the supply chain is expected to deal with. By comparing the modeling results and historical data of 2012 and 2013, we conclude that over-capacity in China’s refining industry is in the severest level. The measurement reveals the driven-force of over-capacity from supply chain perspective, and demonstrates a quantitative method to figure out the proper capacity of energy supply industry. Second, the model simulates how oil supply chain responds to crude oil import disruption and the subsequent impacts. The modeling results indicate that the current configuration of China’s oil supply system is able to maintain sustainable supply under a less-than-180-day crude oil import disruption. The model provides a supply chain perspective in looking into energy security issues, and reveals the relationship between strategic petroleum reserve and the capability to cope with supply risks. In summary, the system dynamic model proposed in this paper is applicable for analysis on capacity planning and reserve strategy design of oil supply chain, providing valuable suggestion for the future development of China’s oil industry. In this paper, the performances of a floating wind energy converter (the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5 MW wind turbine installed on the ITI energy barge) in a realistic, multi-directional random sea are rigorously investigated. The wind loads acting on the floating wind energy converter are also fully considered in the numerical simulation process. Meanwhile, in order to improve the simulation efficiency, a new state space model (the FDI-SS model) is utilized to approximate the convolution integral term when solving the motion equation of the floating wind energy converter. For comparison purpose, the simulation results when the convolution integral term in the motion equation is approximated by a commonly used state space model based on the time domain (TD) realization theory are also included. The simulation results in this paper are systematically analyzed and compared, and the accuracy and efficiency of the new FDI-SS model are verified. Moreover, the simulation results in this article demonstrate the great necessity of using a realistic, multi-directional random sea state when calculating the generated electrical power and the dynamic responses of a floating wind energy converter. Accurate estimation of extreme wave conditions is critical for offshore renewable energy activities and applications. Wave power is the transport of energy by wind waves, and the capture of that energy to do useful work. Wave energy converter (WEC) devices are designed to sustain the wave-induced loads that they experience during both operational and survival sea states. The extreme values of these forces are often a key cost driver for WEC designs. These extreme loads often occur during severe storms; therefore careful examination of harsh wave conditions during the device design process is needed. Consequently the development of a specific extreme condition modeling method is essential. This paper presents a novel method for estimating extreme wave statistics, based on the hourly measured wave height maxima at the location of interest. Wave measurements, analyzed in this paper, were collected at SEM-REV offshore sea station located near the coast of France, during years 2001–2010. Note that applied statistical methodology is general and can be well applied to a measured WEC response, and its technology risk assessment. Accurate estimation of extreme wave conditions is critical for offshore renewable energy activities and applications. SEM-REV is known French wave energy test site. The method, referred to as ACER method, is presented in brief detail. ACER method provides an accurate extreme value prediction, utilizing available data efficiently. In this study the estimated return level values, obtained by ACER method, are compared to the corresponding return level values obtained by Gumbel method. Based on the overall performance of the proposed method, it is concluded that the ACER method can provide a robust and accurate prediction of extreme wave height at a given location.
