Nurses as faculty teaching undergraduate students, require a diversity of skills to ensure that students engage in achieving the desired qualification. While it is anticipated that students have a degree of motivation to reach this goal, their varied backgrounds often mean they require additional support to assist them to engage with the learning process. It is anticipated that the tertiary institution or learning environment will have strategies to support the student from a broader perspective, but much of the engagement relies on the skill and knowledge of the nurse faculty. This discussion paper aims to promote an understanding of student engagement and argues that using aspects of therapeutic engagement can support nurse faculty to enhance the students' learning experience. Key concepts from both student and therapeutic engagement will be reviewed to provide implications, particularly for novice nurse faculty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The Nutrition Care Process and Model (NCPM) provides registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) a framework to recognize, diagnose, and intervene upon nutrition-related health concerns. Within the NCPM, nutrition assessment is essential to develop a comprehensive evaluation of the client’s nutrition history. The application of critical thinking skills to nutrition assessment is imperative to ensure appropriate acquisition and interpretation of data. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Career Development Guide, adapted from the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition, illustrates the progression of critical thinking skills as RDNs and DTRs gain knowledge and experience with practice. The Career Development Guide is characterized by the transition through the following stages: novice, beginner, competent, proficient, and advance practice/expert. The foundation of dietetics knowledge is obtained during the novice and beginner stages. Throughout, the primary objective is introduction of the NCPM and nutrition assessment theory via dietetics education and the application of nutrition assessment in supervised practice. Next, RDNs and DTRs transition to the competent stage of practice. During this phase, entry-level knowledge and skill are applied to patient care settings, and critical thinking skills develop as RDNs and DTRs gain experience. Subsequently, RDNs and DTRs move to the proficient stage as the ability to prioritize attention, generalize, apply problem-solving skills to new scenarios, and identify innovative solutions develops. Some RDNs and DTRs may transition to the advance practice/expert stage, during which critical thinking becomes intuitive. Critical thinking skills are essential to ensure diagnostic accuracy; however, more research is needed to further describe progression of critical thinking skills among RDNs and DTRs. Scholarly interest in Green IT has been rapidly growing over the past 15 years in a wide variety of disciplines including computer science, information systems, sustainability, production management and engineering. This is not surprising given the growing environmental impacts of information and communication technologies. This article presents a bibliometric analysis of academic literature across 1862 sources to improve our understanding of the evolution and current state of this multidisciplinary field. The corpus includes 4067 published journal and conference papers identified using the Scopus database. A descriptive performance analysis of the corpus using Bibliometrix software first allows us to identify the most influential works, authors, sources, institutions, and countries in the field. Examination of its conceptual structure reveals that most work has focused on the design and use phases of ICTs and neglected the manufacturing and end-of-life phases. Interactive teaching is very popular in the field of education, especially in college preschool education teaching. In this study, the experimental performance of the evaluation system based on scientific emotion construction is analyzed by the machine learning algorithm. The experimental results show that the classification model realized by the machine learning algorithm is feasible and effective for the construction of an interactive design teaching evaluation system of preschool education in colleges and universities. The main research content of this experiment is for the teaching evaluation text, this paper intends to use NB, KNN, LR, and SVM algorithms as the meta-learning algorithm in the framework, the classification effect of the meta-classifier is ranked as SVM > LR > KNN > NB. From the above data comparison, the SVM meta-classifier in the algorithm in this paper has achieved the best classification effect. The SVM meta-classifier based on the algorithm in this paper performs well, and the classification accuracy rate reaches 92.1%. This shows that this model is very suitable for studying the. This paper reflects on the experience of one Scottish University in conducting a face-to-face Objective Structured Examination (OSCE) for large cohorts of student nurses. It outlines the challenges experienced and learning gained. Borton's model of reflection frames this work due to its simplicity, ease of application and cyclical nature. The theoretical framework for the OSCE is critical thinking, enabling students to apply those skills authentically. OSCE's are designed to transfer classroom knowledge to clinical practice and offer an authentic work-based assessment. Validity and robustness are key considerations in any assessment and in OSCE, the number of stations that students encounter is important and debated. We used a case-study based OSCE approach initially over four stations and following reflection, changed to one long station with four phases. In OSCE examinations, interrater reliability is a necessity, and students expect equity of approach. We identified that despite clear marking criteria, marks were polarised, with students achieving high or low marks with little middle ground. Review of examination papers highlighted that although students' overall performance was good, some had failed in at least one station, suggesting a four-station approach may skew results. On reflection we hypothesised that using a one station case study-based, phased approach enabled the examiner to build up a more holistic picture of student knowledge and skills. It also provided the student opportunity to develop a rapport with the examiner and standardised patient, thereby putting them more at ease. We argue that this approach is holistic, authentic and student centred. Our experience highlights that a single station, four phase OSCE is preferrable, enabling students to integrate all aspects of the assessment and provides a holistic view of clinical skills and knowledge. [Display omitted] Artificial intelligence (AI) in education (AIED) has evolved into a substantial body of literature with diverse perspectives. In this review paper, we seek insights into three critical questions: (1) What are the primary categories of AI applications explored in the education field? (2) What are the predominant research topics and their key findings? (3) What is the status of major research design elements, including guiding theories, methodologies, and research contexts? A bibliometric analysis of 2,223 research articles followed by a content analysis of selected 125 papers reveals a comprehensive conceptual structure of the existing literature. The extant AIED research spans a wide spectrum of applications, encompassing those for adaptive learning and personalized tutoring, intelligent assessment and management, profiling and prediction, and emerging products. Research topics delve into both the technical design of education systems and the examination of the adoption, impacts, and challenges associated with AIED. Furthermore, this review highlights the diverse range of theories applied in the AIED literature, the multidisciplinary nature of publication venues, and underexplored research areas. In sum, this research offers valuable insights for interested scholars to comprehend the current state of AIED research and identify future research opportunities in this dynamic field. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing user acceptance of mobile library applications in academic libraries. Methodology A conceptual structural model for user acceptance of mobile library applications, was developed using a technology acceptance model (TAM) as a theoretical background, and used a structural equation modeling with partial least squares (PLS) approach to examine data collected from a survey of 273 undergraduates in an academic library setting. Findings The results of this study strongly support the TAM theory to understand user acceptance of mobile library applications. Perceived usefulness, interactivity, and ease of use had significant effects on user attitude and intention to use mobile library applications. Further, user satisfaction had the most powerful effect on intention to use among the constructs included in the model. Practical implications The results are of practical significance to all those interested in the mobile library services field, or primarily academic library researchers and library practitioners. Value The paper is the first to investigate user acceptance of mobile library services using smartphone applications based on the TAM theory. Simultaneously, the PLS approach used in this study is unique to mobile library services research. Geographic modeling is considered as an effective way to solve geographic problems. Geographic conceptual modeling is the first step of geographic modeling, in which modelers can fully exchange modeling ideas, thereby achieving a common understanding of geographic system and guiding subsequent geographic modeling process. However, due to the diverse research backgrounds of modelers, it is challenging for them to exchange modeling ideas with one another. This paper provides a visual cognitive communication method for modelers by constructing a conceptual graph gallery, and then improves the efficiency of geographic conceptual modeling. A multidimensional description method that describes modeling cognition from multiple perspectives, the conceptual graph gallery that includes concept items and conceptual graphs, and the conceptual graph gallery-based cognitive communication methods are designed in this paper. Stigma and discrimination are increasingly understood as shaping health, and in turn conceptualised as social processes shaped by power and structural inequities. A challenge to analysis and implementing interventions is developing theory that can integrate analysis of structure, agency and power. One theoretical framework already promoted by prominent scholars as supporting this need is Bourdieu's social practice theory. This paper explores the application to date of Bourdieu's theory on stigma, discrimination and health. The paper describes how existing health literature has used concepts of symbolic violence, fields, capitals and habitus to develop insight into stigma power. The discussion explores how this theoretical framework is though underutilised and there has been little consideration of new programmatic approaches based on this theory. Directions for future research include the need for integrated approaches to analysis, especially using habitus to explore stigma power, and addressing processes of change. Directions for conceptualising interventions address how a mismatch of field and habitus could foster change and then the role for prophets in fostering symbolic revolutions. All these potential directions must in turn be integrated within the vast scholarship on stigma. By conducting a bibliometric analysis of Kosher meat production according to deep-rooted Jewish tradition, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the sustainable aspects of the production process taking the main pillars of food security into consideration. The majority of treatment options available are targeted at the local pathology of the common extensor tendon as the apparent source of pain, and do not adequately address the cause, the source of overuse, and mechanism of injury. The purpose of this paper is to describe a novel approach, a regional interdependence model, to reduce symptoms of upper extremity musculoskeletal overuse in populations at risk by addressing a broader systematic approach versus a localized symptom driven approach for the assessment and treatment of lateral elbow pain. The proposed framework - Think in nerve length and layers (TINLL)- accounts for nerve tension and muscle balance in the entire extremity. • Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is one setting which aims to provide stability and community to those who have experienced homelessness. • PSH has not been widely studied with young adults. • This paper uses mixed method to explore how young adult residents experience psychological sense of community (PSOC) before and after moving into PSH. • We find that building community takes time and requires opportunities for voices to be heard, along with ongoing personal growth (often related to substance use recovery). • Future PSH settings for young people should consider how to support residents in their individual journeys, and in building community. Amidst chronic stressors and ongoing instability, many young people who have experienced homelessness and housing instability find communities and settings which offer support and care. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is one setting which aims to provide stability and community to those who have experienced homelessness, but it has not been widely studied with young adults (ages 18–25 upon moving into PSH). This paper employs a longitudinal convergent mixed methods approach – with quantitative and qualitative survey data over 1.5 years – to explore how young adult residents (N = 27 at T1; N = 20 at T2, N = 13 at T3) experience sense of community before and after moving into PSH. Using McMillan and Chavis' (1986) four-part Psychological Sense of Community (PSOC) framework to frame data collection and analysis, we find that residents' sense of community is shaped by an ongoing negotiation of personal and collective needs. Building community takes time and requires opportunities for voices to be heard (and shape change), along with ongoing personal growth – especially related to substance use recovery. Our findings offer insights for future PSH settings for young people – as well as other residential and community settings which aim to support young people. Over the past 60 years since its inception, the Anglo-American Paramedic System has continued to grow and evolve. While brief and fragmented accounts of the differences between systems have been noted in the literature, until recently there has been a paucity of research that explores and identifies sub-models of paramedicine within the Anglo-American Paramedic System. This article describes a conceptual framework that sets a roadmap for defining and comparing two newly identified sub-models of the Anglo-American Paramedic System. A conceptual framework for the exploration of these novel sub-models was developed on the basis of the work completed by Donabedian as well as Turncock and Handler. These two sub-models worked to develop a model for quality assessment and performance measurement in the public health system. The conceptual framework consists of six components that are strongly related to each other: system design, macro context, mission and purpose, structure, service delivery models and quality outcome measures. While this framework relates specifically to two novel paramedic systems known as the Professionally Autonomous an Directive paramedic systems, it can be used to measure any integrated health model. The conceptual framework described in this paper provides a stepwise roadmap for the definition and comparison of the newly identified paramedic systems to better inform future research that defines and compares paramedic system design and performance. Previous work on concept graphs combining Formal Concept Analysis with Conceptual Graphs is revisited in this paper in the context of conjunctive database queries. The paper presents the conjunctive database query model as a special case of Ganter and Kuznetsov's pattern structures, where patterns are considered as conjunctive queries. It further presents kernel operators to reduce the complexity of the computation and to simplify the description of concepts. Alternative formalisms based on intensional graphs and power context families are introduced to advance knowledge interoperability between Formal Concept Analysis, database theory, model theory, logic, concept graphs and Sowa's Conceptual Graphs. Constitutive models of the mechanical response of soft tissues have been established and are widely accepted, but models of soft tissues remodeling are more controversial. Specifically for growth, one important question arises pertaining to residual stresses: existing growth models inevitably introduce residual stresses, but it is not entirely clear if this is physiological or merely an artifact of the modeling framework. As a consequence, in simulating growth, some authors have chosen to keep growth-induced residual stresses, and others have chosen to remove them. In this paper, we introduce a novel "relaxed growth" framework allowing for a fine control of the amount of residual stresses generated during tissue growth. It is a direct extension of the classical framework of the multiplicative decomposition of the transformation gradient, to which an additional sub-transformation is introduced in order to let the original unloaded configuration evolve, hence relieving some residual stresses. We provide multiple illustrations of the framework mechanical response, on time-driven constrained growth as well as the strain-driven growth problem of the artery under internal pressure, including the opening angle experiment. The novel relaxed growth modeling framework introduced in this paper allows for a better control of growth-induced residual stresses compared to standard growth models based on the multiplicative decomposition of the transformation gradient. Reflection is a key activity in self-regulated learning (SRL) and a critical part of health professions education that supports the development of effective lifelong-learning health professionals. Despite widespread use and plentiful theoretical models, empirical understanding of and support for reflection in health professions education remains limited due to simple manual assessment and rare feedback to students. Recent moves to digital reflection practices offer opportunities to computationally study and support reflection as a part of SRL. The critical task in such an endeavor, and the goal of this paper, is to align high-level reflection qualities that are valued conceptually with low-level features in the data that are possible to extract computationally. This paper approaches this goal by (a) developing a unified framework for conceptualizing reflection analytics in health professions education and (b) empirically examining potential data features through which these elements can be assessed. Synthesizing the prior literature yields a conceptual framework for health professions reflection comprised of six elements: Description, Analysis, Feelings, Perspective, Evaluation, and Outcome. These elements then serve as the conceptual grounding for the computational analysis in which 27 dental students' reflections (in six reflective statement types) over the course of 4 years were examined using selected LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) indices. Variation in elements of reflection across students, years, and reflection-types supports use of the multi-dimensional analysis framework to (a) increase precision of research claims; (b) evaluate whether reflection activities are engaged in as intended; and (c) diagnose aspects of reflection in which specific students need support. Child and maternal health, a key marker of overall health system performance, is a policy priority area by the World Health Organization and the United Nations, including the Sustainable Development Goals. Previous realist work has linked child and maternal health outcomes to globalization, political tradition, and the welfare state. It is important to explore the role of other key policy-related factors. This paper presents a realist synthesis, categorising policy instruments according to the established NATO model, to develop an explanatory model of how policy instruments impact child and maternal health outcomes. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies assessing the relationships between policy instruments and child and maternal health outcomes. Data were analysed using a realist framework. The first stage of the realist analysis process was to generate micro-theoretical initial programme theories for use in the theory adjudication process. Proposed theories were then adjudicated iteratively to produce a set of final programme theories. From a total of 43,415 unique records, 632 records proceeded to full-text screening and 138 papers were included in the review. Evidence from 132 studies was available to address this research question. Studies were published from 1995 to 2021; 76% assessed a single country, and 81% analysed data at the ecological level. Eighty-eight initial candidate programme theories were generated. Following theory adjudication, five final programme theories were supported. According to the NATO model, these were related to treasure, organisation, authority-treasure, and treasure-organisation instrument types. • This study reviewed forced family separation as the result of migration policies. • Forced family separation is linked to negative mental health outcomes for children. • Forced family separation is linked to adverse health among parents/caregivers. • There is racial and ethnic discrimination in punitive immigration policies. This paper aims to systematically look at the impacts of child separation from the primary caregiver as the result of migration policies from a racial and ethnic equity perspective. An online systematic search of Web of Science Core Collection, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Sociological Abstracts with keywords relevant to migration, family separation, and health outcomes was conducted in January 2022. The studies retrieved through the search were independently reviewed by two of the authors using the PRISMA checklist for scoping reviews and Covidence systematic review software. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, 14 papers were included in the scoping review. We found that none of the studies were centered on a racial and ethnic equity framework. The reviewed studies showed that forced separation was associated with negative mental health outcomes including anxiety, depression, emotional and behavioral problems, post-traumatic stress or post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbance, and stress among children. Similar adverse health outcomes were reported among caregivers. Positive youth development is a popular guiding framework for studying the psychosocial development of youth. In sport research, for more than two decades, this framework has enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms involved in successful shifts from youth to adulthood. Nonetheless, scholars have recently taken a more critical stance on the positive youth development framework by elucidating some of its shortcomings. To help determine whether it may be warranted to plan for a transition from the positive youth development framework in sport research, a critical commentary is offered. The purpose of this commentary lies in situating three ontologically distinct arguments that depict the shortcomings of the positive youth development framework, namely the operationalization argument, the social justice argument, and the posthumanist argument. For many classification methods, different features in these classification models are usually organized into a flat and equal-length vector while semantically restrictive relations or nonparallel structures among them are often ignored. However, sometimes the semantic relations or structures among different attributes derived from the domain knowledge are very important, for instance, natural language processing and biological data mining, which can help to increase the performance of classification models considerably. For Chinese semantic word formation analysis with the large-scale Chinese corpus, the feature set is horizontally composed of different morpheme types, semantic types and part of speech (POS) while it vertically consists of three levels of big, medium and small classes. If a classifier model does not consider these relations or structures, then it can lead to information loss and distortion, and the degenerated classifier model can be ultimately obtained. In this paper, in view of the aforementioned limitations, by defining a new conceptual hierarchy graph, the semantic weights of different features are obtained, then semantically weighted kernels are formulated and introduced to multi-criteria linear optimization classifier (MCLOC). Thus, a new semantically weighted MCLOC (SW-MCLOC) using the linear and radius basic function (RBF) kernels is proposed and applied to Chinese word formation pattern prediction. The experimental results and comparison among MCLOC, SVM and SW-MCLOC show that our proposed model can effectively increase the separation of different word formation patterns, the predictive accuracy of target patterns and the generalization power of pattern classification on new compound words. Diffusion of innovation theory acted as a theoretical framework to understand the premiums that the brands can enjoy from the customers by moving towards immersive commerce. 948 tweets on metaverse were analysed and five in-depth interviews with the experts on metaverse were conducted. For the quantitative study, the data were collected from a select metaverse Facebook group. The findings of PLS-SEM revealed that four factors - customer engagement, customer experience, value co-creation and customer empowerment - have statistically positive impact on customer citizenship behavior which ultimately affects customer satisfaction and loyalty towards the brands. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) represent a multibillion-dollar global market. While considerable speculation exists about the future utility of NFTs, there has been limited research into the consumer behaviors of market participants. This research paper examines the motivations of NFT buyers through the lens of self-determination theory. Using a sample of 482 participants, the authors tested a conceptual framework to better understand both NFT buyers' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. This study expands the literature on NFTs in three different ways: i) it is the first study, as far as we know, to focus exclusively on NFT buyers and their motivations in purchasing NFTs; ii) it explores a variety of potential motivations theorized in the literature; and iii) it tests the expected future value of NFTs as both a motivation and as a moderator for NFT buyers. The authors determined that intrinsic motivation had the most substantial effect on purchase intention, and the expectations of NFTs' future value positively moderated the effect of amotivation on purchase intention. In contrast, high expectations of future value moderated the effect of external regulation on purchase intention. Last, we reviewed literature, including professional handbooks and publications. The content analysis and systematic literature reviews indicate that as an interdisciplinary concept, family support workforce skills are generally familiar, but not defined nor specified and differentiated from other skills used in the broad field of work with families. So, to deepen the knowledge on family support workforce skills and reach a reliable consensus, the Delphi method was used with a series of questionnaires at different stages of research. Results indicate that specific core and field-specific skills become family supportive when they are applied in the contexts of strength and relationship-based approach as well as both – whole family and child-centred approach. Born out of Israel's recent experience with the Hamas terror organization's abduction of 40 Israeli children aged 9 months to 18 years, this paper proposes a comprehensive framework that could be useful to other countries in addressing the complex challenges associated with the return of children abducted in contexts of armed conflict and political violence. This framework is rooted in four theoretical prisms—trauma, development, context, and children's rights, and spans five critical stages: the preparation stage, the first 24 h, the first week, and the first month after a child's return. It also provides general guidance on longer-term support and providing support to multiple key figures and contexts in the child's life. By outlining key concepts and guidelines within the framework, this manuscript provides a unique insight into potential response to this distressing phenomenon. This is the second of two papers reporting the development of a spiritual care competency framework for pre-registration nurses and midwives as part of a PhD study using an embedded sequential mixed methods eclectic research design. The first paper outlines how 116 competency items were generated from an in-depth review of international literature, and offers a theoretical model to underpin development of the Framework. This paper reports how the Framework was developed. Method/Results: Five focus groups were held with stakeholders in Malta (chaplains/spiritual leaders, undergraduate nursing/midwifery educators, qualified nurses/midwives, parents/carers, patients/clients) to ensure that aspects of spirituality/spiritual care important to them, but not identified in the literature review, were included in the Framework. The resulting 55 competencies in seven domains formed the Delphi Questionnaire which was validated using a two round modified Delphi method involving experts from Malta. The final seven domain 54 item Framework demonstrated good to strong internal consistency, stability and a good fit with a six factor model. The Framework's greatest immediate contribution is in its ability to inform undergraduate nursing/midwifery spiritual care curriculum design and delivery. Heart disease is one of the most prominent silent killers in the world. Treating the heart disease health problems is considerably costly. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), heart patients are now able to monitor their heart conditions using heart disease monitoring applications on any mobile devices. Usability factors such as ease of use, ease of learning, efficiency, flexibility and the attitude of users towards the applications are deemed important in determining the usability of such mobile applications. This paper employs a systematic literature review method in analyzing 1,339 relevant articles. Based on the review, this paper theoretically contributes by proposing a conceptual model that integrates haptics tactile feedback into heart disease monitoring mobile applications with the aim of enhancing the usability of the heart disease monitoring mobile applications. This is expected to lead to ease of health monitoring by both patients and health professionals, and potentially reduce the frequency of visits to hospitals and the cost of medical expenses. The validity of sporting talent is hotly contested by those working, watching, and participating in sport in its variety of forms. Despite considerable research attention to understanding talent development in sport settings, the overall utility of this concept is not known. One of the reasons for this is that sporting talent has not been adequately conceptualized. This paper aims to provide a broad foundation for exploring talent in sport. Critical review. Prior work from psychology, sport psychology and sport science more generally are reviewed to develop a new conceptualization of talent in sport. We propose a multi-faceted conceptualization of talent as: innate (i.e., originating in biological elements present at birth), multi-dimensional (i.e., consisting of capacities from a range of broad cognitive, physical, and psychological categories), emergenic (i.e., involving interactions among factors that combine multiplicatively), dynamic (i.e., evolving across developmental time due to interactions with environments and random gene expression) and symbiotic (i.e., cultural and social factors will determine the ultimate value of an individual's talent). This paper examines how power and knowledge are involved in the workings of speech and language therapy and in the work of speech and language therapists (SLTs). The paper draws on Foucault for its conceptual frame, with reference to his exposition of governmentality, biopolitics and pastoral power. Based on interviews with thirty-three SLTs in the UK, the findings show that evidence-based practice (EBP) is ever-present in speech and language therapy, despite its apparent absence; and that its power circulates in a multitude of ways. EBP as a process, and not an outcome, was workable. When competent practice was at risk, however, the SLTs challenged the dominance of EBP by saying it needed to 'get real' but then were troubled when it did. Working the 'wise' - those people involved with the client, including the SLTs themselves - was key to speech and language therapy; as was the making of subjects into biopolitical objects. Abstract The importance of supervision for social work practice is one of the most widely accepted tenets of the profession. Yet, surprisingly little is known about what happens in supervision, making it difficult to unravel what it is about supervision that makes a difference to social work practice. This paper describes the development of a framework for assessing the quality of group supervision. It focuses on one sub-category of group supervision – systemic group supervision – and draws a wider evaluation of systemic social work practice in the UK. It is based on 29 observations of "live" of supervision to illustrate differences in quality of supervisory practice. The process of developing the coding framework was cyclical, and ultimately resulted in a three-point ordinal grouping for assessing systemic supervisory practice. Analysis of observational data assessed systemic group supervision as follows: 8 as non-systemic (28%); 12 (41%) as demonstrating some incorporation of systemic ideas into interactions, described as "green shoots" (or showing encouraging signs of development but not yet reached its full potential); and 9 (31%) supervision sessions demonstrating a full incorporation of systemic concepts and practice. What marked "systemic" sessions from "green shoots" supervision was the move from hypothesis generation about family relations and risk to children to purposeful, actionable conversations with families: the move from reflection to action. This paper supports a small but growing body of evidence about the fundamental characteristics of successful or effective supervision within children and families social work. To review the current evidence on the relationship between specialty nurse certification and outcomes. A structured and comprehensive systematic review was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework to include both published research studies and expert opinion papers. Four electronic databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, and PsychINFO were searched between 2000 and 2018. The search for expert opinion papers included nursing organizations, OaLster, Grey Literature Report, and The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. The records generated through the search were exported to EndNote X8 and duplicates were removed. Title and abstracts of the records were screened by three reviewers for eligibility using the selection criteria. In the absence of an abstract, records were retained for full text review. Full text assessment of each paper was conducted by two reviewers with a third referee, if necessary, to review any discrepancies. In the case of multiple articles drawing on one set of primary data, only one article was included. A review of each article was completed using the JBI Quality Appraisal checklists to assess internal and external reliability and validity. Both quality appraisal and data extraction were conducted by the review team independently and were validated by one other member of the team. Discrepancies were resolved through rigorous discussion between the reviewers. Forty one original research studies were included in the final analysis of the literature. The findings from the included articles were synthesized into three major categories and subsequent sub-categories: Patient outcomes, nurse outcomes and organizational outcomes. Twenty seven findings contributed to the sub-category of specialty nurse certification and patient outcomes. Patient outcomes were further classified into nurse sensitive outcomes, patient mortality and patient satisfaction. Fifty-four findings related to nurse outcomes with the sub-categories: personal and professional factors, knowledge and skills, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, empowerment and confidence. Six findings related to organizational benefits: including the sub-categories of nursing turnover and vacancy rates, perception of healthcare, and costs to the organization. The current model risks driving further proliferation of specialty certifications and certifying organizations without questioning the assumptions underlying the goals of certification. The aim of this review and discussion paper is to advance the debate on competence in nursing, simulation education, and literacy in simulation education pedagogy. Building on our previous patient-safety critical translational research work on drug dosage calculation-competence modelling, and safeMedicate ® virtual learning and diagnostic assessment environment design, we introduce three new concepts. First, we re-conceptualise the cognitive and physical modalities of a theory-practice gap, created by the traditional organisation of health professional education practice. Second, that simulated clinical environments occupy the liminal spaces between the ordered, symbolic and abstract world of the classroom, and the situated, messy world of clinical healthcare practice. Third, technology-enhanced boundary objects (TEBOs) function as simulation pedagogy modalities that (a) support students' transition across the liminal space and boundaries between classroom and practice setting, and (b) support competence development and integration in nursing. We use a constructivist-based clinical simulation education model as a guiding pedagogical framework for applying TEBOs and an integrated nursing competence model. Abstract Health inequalities continue to grow despite continuous policy intervention. Work, one domain of health inequalities, is often included as a component of social class rather than as a determinant in its own right. Many social class classifications are derived from occupation types, but there are other components within them that mean they may not be useful as proxies for occupation. This paper develops the exposome, a life-course exposure model developed by Wild (2005), into the worksome, allowing for the explicit consideration of both physical and psychosocial exposures and effects derived from work and working conditions. The interactions between and within temporal and geographical scales are strongly emphasised, and the interwoven nature of both psychosocial and physical exposures is highlighted. Individuals within an occupational type can be both affected by and effect upon occupation level characteristics and health measures. By using the worksome, occupation types are separated from value-laden social classifications. This paper will empirically examine whether occupation better predicts health measures from the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). Logistic regression models using Bayesian MCMC estimation were run for each classification system, for each health measure. Health measures included, for example, whether the respondent felt their work affected their health, their self-rated health, pain in upper or lower limbs, and headaches. Using the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), a measure of predictive accuracy penalised for model complexity, the models were assessed against one another. The DIC shows empirically which classification system is most suitable for use in modelling. The 2-digit International Standard Classification of Occupations showed the best predictive accuracy for all measures. Therefore, examining the relationship between health and work should be done with classifications specific to occupation or industry rather than socio-economic class classifications. This justifies the worksome, allowing for a conceptual framework to link many forms of work-health research. Abstract Health systems around the world face financial pressures that can affect sustainability and patient outcomes, and there is a vast literature devoted to the allocation of scarce health care resources. Capital spending - for example on estates, equipment and information technology - is an important but often neglected area of this literature. This study explores the constraints on the allocation of capital budgets in health care, before addressing the question: what is the role of priority setting and rationing in responses to these constraints? The paper presents findings from interviews conducted with senior finance professionals in 30 National Health Service local provider organisations across England. Findings suggest a pervasive sense of impending crisis, with capital restrictions limiting investment in buildings, infrastructure and equipment. The paper applies a conceptual classification scheme from the classic rationing literature (the forms of rationing framework) and identifies widespread practices of 'selection', 'dilution' and 'delay', with 'denial' and 'termination' comparatively rare. Practices of 'deflection' and 'deterrence' are ascribed to national actors as a means of restricting the flow of capital resources to the system. The study suggests that there is little by way of tailored support for priority setting in capital spending, and a perception that decisions are often reactive and short term. It also suggests that wider system features and dynamics can preclude or constrain priority setting at the organisational level. The authors use these findings to suggest future conceptual development of the forms of rationing framework and make recommendations for research and practice in this area. Abstract In this paper we explore the interrelationship between the sociotechnical-pedagogical culture of e-learning, the emerging disciplines of Web science, Social Sensing and that of Cognitive Computation–as an emerging paradigm of computation. We comment in particular on the importance of this relation for the development of learning-analytics discourse. Moreover, we present an initial relational framework between these disciplines and suggest how these relations can be exploited to solve problems in each area. This paper argues for (a) the particular importance of the abstract class of 'learning machines' for Web science, (b) understanding cognitive computation as a necessary practical framework for the increasingly dominating, situated informal learning context, and (c) the potential benefit of Web science frameworks for investigating both, contemporary research questions in e-learning and the development of theories for informal ubiquitous learning. Finally, we argue that exploring links between these disciplines is necessary for improving practical research, for the purpose of developing learning-analytics methodology for evaluating the growing types of modern e-learning contexts such as the informal situated learning context. Abstract The explanation of offending and reoffending currently relies upon the Risk-Need-Responsivity model's concept of "criminogenic need" (Andrews & Bonta, 2010; Bonta & Andrews, 2017) or dynamic risk factors (DRF). This is problematic because the DRF construct is predictive rather than explanatory, and suffers from a number of conceptual problems. Relatedly, the identification and management of DRF in individuals who have committed crimes is an overriding concern for the criminal justice system. It drives the formation of correctional policy and the funding of treatment programs in prisons, forensic hospitals, and probation services. Significant theoretical work is required in order to transform DRF into explanatory tools which are useful for research and practice. In this paper we outline problems with DRF which obstruct this process and then sketch out a possible way forward; the Risk-Causality Method, with its three phases of deconstruction, analysis, and reintegration. Abstract This paper provides an interdisciplinary perspective on the role of existential crises in crime causation. The theory presented in this paper is that a crisis of meaning is interrelated with other criminogenic factors, and that these factors together lead to frustration, which in turn may lead to aggression in some cases. Specifically, factors of anomie, boredom, mass entertainment, subculture, and gender are explored. This framework traces the influence of both social structure and culture on the individual level of motivation. This paper follows in the theoretical tradition advanced by Dollard et al., linking frustration to aggression and positing "there is a strong tendency for inhibited direct aggression to be displaced, i.e., not to disappear but to be expressed in altered form or to be directed toward individuals who were not the source of the frustration." (Dollard, 1967). The paper develops a Weberian ideal type of the anomic individual within the criminal subculture. For an additional layer of social psychological perspective, the analysis continually engages with Merton's theory of anomie. Overall, this framework invites the reader to explore the interaction of psychological, sociological, and cultural variables. By appreciating the relationship between these variables, we might recognize the motivational power of the subjective experience of acute frustration present during existential crises. The results of this analysis are directly applicable to the perennial social issue of aggression. Scholarly elucidation of the criminogenic existential crisis can provide vivid guidance to teachers, parole officers, social work professionals, and therapists from a variety of traditions. The existential perspective provides an important reason to remain attuned to the psychological vulnerability of young people. Primarily, the need for meaning-oriented leadership should be seriously considered. Another basic precept of prevention should be to provide young people with a third way between models of ostentatious affluence and nihilistic ego gratification. Additionally, boredom should be recognized as a criminogenic state of being. Importantly, the pervasiveness of criminal subcultures must be reckoned with. Rather than denying the pervasiveness of such subcultures, preventive policy should incorporate destructive or unflattering norms and behavior into a positive framework of counseling or therapy. Finally, supervision during the period of inner crisis is absolutely vital. Constructive supervision would consist of ensuring that external control is concurrent with purposeful activity and outlets for inevitable frustrations. This framework has implications for criminal justice. By focusing closely -as this paper does- on psychological drives, we begin to perceive limitations to punitive policy. Abstract Internationally, policy makers are increasingly focussed on reducing the detrimental consequences and rising costs associated with unhealthy diets, inactivity, smoking, alcohol and other risk factors on the health of their populations. This has led to an increase in the demand for evidence-based, cost-effective Population Health Interventions (PHIs) to reverse this trend. Given that research designs such as randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are often not suited to the evaluation of PHIs, Natural Experiments (NEs) are now frequently being used as a design to evaluate such complex, preventive PHIs. However, current guidance for economic evaluation focusses on RCT designs and therefore does not address the specific challenges of NE designs. Using such guidance can lead to sub-optimal design, data collection and analysis for NEs, leading to bias in the estimated effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the PHI. Abstract Health interventions often depend on a complex system of human and capital infrastructure that is shared with other interventions, in the form of service delivery platforms, such as healthcare facilities, hospitals, or community services. Most forms of health system strengthening seek to improve the efficiency or effectiveness of such delivery platforms. This paper presents a typology of ways in which health system strengthening can improve the economic efficiency of health services. Three types of health system strengthening are identified and modelled: (1) investment in the efficiency of an existing shared platform that generates positive benefits across a range of existing interventions; (2) relaxing a capacity constraint of an existing shared platform that inhibits the optimization of existing interventions; (3) providing an entirely new shared platform that supports a number of existing or new interventions. Theoretical models are illustrated with examples, and illustrate the importance of considering the portfolio of interventions using a platform, and not just piecemeal individual analysis of those interventions. They show how it is possible to extend principles of conventional cost-effectiveness analysis to identify an optimal balance between investing in health system strengthening and expenditure on specific interventions. The models developed in this paper provide a conceptual framework for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of investments in strengthening healthcare systems and, more broadly, shed light on the role that platforms play in promoting the cost-effectiveness of different interventions. Abstract Registered Nurses (RNs) are regulated health professionals who are educated and accountable for safe medication administration (MA). Binding their practice are standards, policies, procedure and legislation. MA competence is taught and assessed during professional pre-registration education programs. However, different philosophies, theories and models are used by education providers making curriculum content disparate and competency frameworks diverse. Additionally, healthcare contexts are increasingly complex and clinical environments unpredictable. Competency models must respect contemporary practice. This paper focusses on the outcomes of Australian PhD research that combined Appreciative Inquiry (AI) principles with a qualitative study to identify MA safety strategies. In this 2-phase descriptive study, twenty RNs were observed then interviewed about their MA experiences. This paper discusses the interview findings. The participants explained how they assessed patient's needs and implemented strategies to administer medications safely. They presented their actions as being underpinned by a desire to do 'the right thing for the patient' despite their practice going beyond traditional procedural frameworks and not reflecting organisational protocols. Instead, they developed common strategies to enhance safe MA. The participants' described using clinical reasoning and patient-centredness during MA. This study contributes to the knowledge needed for future practice development by highlighting what works. Abstract Advocacy for people using health and social care services is widely promoted but its theoretical foundation is under-developed and its impact poorly conceptualised. This paper explores the liberatory potential of independent advocacy, using Fricker's concept of 'epistemic injustice' as a framework. People experiencing mental distress are particularly vulnerable to epistemic injustices as a consequence of deeply embedded social stigma resulting in a priori assumptions of irrationality and unreliability such that their knowledge is often discounted or downgraded. The mental health service user/survivor movement is at the forefront of validating personal experience and narrative to secure a different ontological and epistemological basis for mental distress. A foundational strand of this is advocacy to enable people to give voice to their experience. The case of independent mental health advocacy (IMHA) services under mental health legislation in England, provides an opportunity to critically examine whether advocacy can promote epistemic justice as a result of the legally sanctioned encounter between clinical assessment and subjective experience, pivoting on judgements about risk. This paper draws on empirical data from a national evaluation of IMHA services, which included 90 individual interviews with people subject to detention and three focus groups with mental health service users. Fricker's concept of epistemic injustice is used as a lens to investigate how this type of advocacy might mitigate forms of epistemic injustice, and thereby promote greater social justice in mental health. The concept of epistemic injustice provides a valuable theoretical basis for understanding the worth of advocacy in addressing testimonial injustice as well as its relative weakness in overcoming hermeneutical injustice. The challenge of independent advocacy to the dominant discourse within mental health is considered and questions raised about the place of advocacy in modern democratic mental health systems. Abstract Sciatica is a common form of low back pain (LBP) that has been identified as distinct both in terms of the persistence and severity of symptoms. Little research has explored individual experiences of sciatica, and none focuses on individuals with the most severe, long-lasting symptoms who may experience the most profound impact. This paper addresses this gap through proposing a theoretical framework for understanding such experiences, that of biographical suspension as a form of liminality of Self. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals with severe sciatic symptoms between January 2016‒March 2017, as part of the UK-based SCOPiC (SCiatica Outcomes in Primary Care) randomised controlled trial. Data were analysed thematically using the constant comparison method. The concept of 'biographical suspension', originally developed in LBP, emerged as one whereby individuals put life on-hold in the expectation of an eventual return to their former, pain-free selves. Deeper analysis extended this concept to a form of liminality, whereby individuals are caught between pre- and post-sickness selves, unable to fully identify with either. This liminality is underpinned by ongoing beliefs about sciatica as a temporary and fixable 'injury' rather than long-term 'illness', even among those with long-lasting symptoms. This led to a disjuncture between individuals' ongoing pain beliefs and experiences, resulting in longer-term psychological impacts. Biographical suspension is further conceptualised as an experiential stage giving rise to four distinct short-term trajectories: i) symptom resolution leading individuals to occupy a clearly post-liminal state; ii) remaining in suspended liminality; iii) ongoing symptoms leading to a post-liminal state of resignation; ix) a state of being both between sickness and wellness, and straddling hope and fear; thus exemplifying differing states of liminality experienced over time. Findings have implications for the support provided in clinical settings to individuals who may struggle to self-manage due to sustained liminality of Self. The purpose of this paper is to systematically examine available empirical evidence on the impact of human factors (HF) in the design and management of manufacturing operations on system quality performance. A systematic review was conducted to map the linkages between the human-system fit in the design of operations systems (OS) with production quality. A total of 73 empirical studies were identified linking HF to OS performance in manufacturing. Quality risk factors included HF aspects in product design, process design and workstation design of the manufacturing OS. Quality deficits were associated with undesirable human effects of workload like fatigue and injury-related risk factors. Forty-six percent of the studies reported on efforts to improve HF in the OS with effect sizes for quality improvements reaching up to 86%. Abstract Advance care directives situate persons as rational and self-determining actors who can make anticipatory plans about their futures. This paper critically examines how people interpret individual and future-oriented approaches to medical decision-making with limited access to information and knowledge, and reduced opportunities to prepare and document their care preferences. Based on ethnographic research with Asian migrant families living in Adelaide, South Australia (August 2015–July 2018), it reveals a discord between planning for a finite future and the contingencies and continuities of social life. It unsettles the detached reasoning that is privileged in end-of-life decision-making and reveals limitations to "do-it-yourself" approaches to advance care directives which, it will be argued, not only forecasts potential futures but also forecloses them. Taking Derrida's critique of death and decision-making as a point of departure, it develops the concept of temporal dissonance as a theoretical framework to articulate the tensions that are constituted in advance care directives. The paper suggests that attention to temporal incongruities may help to shed light on the many complex interpretations of advance care directives and the difficulties of promoting them in diverse contexts. Abstract Sociological interest in the digitization of health has predominantly been studied using qualitative approaches. Research in this field has grown steadily since the late 1990′s but to date, no synthesis has been conducted to integrate this now rather comprehensive corpus of data. In this paper we present a meta-ethnography of 15 papers reporting qualitative studies of digitally mediated patient – professional interactions. By dissecting the detailed descriptions of digitized practices in this most basic relationship in health care, we explore how these studies can illuminate important aspects of social relations in contemporary society. Our interpretative synthesis enables us to reassert a sociological view that places changes in social structures and interaction at the core of questions about the digitization of health care. Our synthesis of this literature identifies four key concepts that point at structural processes of change. We argue that when patient-professional interactions are digitized, relations are respatialized, and there are reconnections of relational components. These lead to empirically specific reactions , which can be characterized as reconstitutions and renegotiations of social practices which in turn are related to the reconfiguration of basic social institutions. We propose a new direction for exploring the digitalization of health care to illuminate how digital health is related to contemporary social change. The application of naturalistic driving data (NDD) has the potential to answer critical research questions in the area of driving behavior assessment, as well as the impact of exogenous and endogenous factors on driver safety. However, the presence of a large number of research domains and analysis foci makes a systematic review of NDD applications challenging in terms of information density and complexity. While previous research has focused on the execution of naturalistic driving studies and on specific analysis techniques, a multifaceted aggregation of NDD applications in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) research is still unavailable. In spite of the current body of work being regularly updated with new findings, evolutionary nuances in this field remain relatively unknown. To address these deficits, the evolutionary trend of NDD applications was assessed using research performance analysis and science mapping. Subsequently, a systematic review was conducted using the keywords "naturalistic driving data" and "naturalistic driving study data". This article presents a bibliometric analysis and a mapping of the intellectual and conceptual structure of the research conducted on 'Compositional Data' (CoDa) in Social Sciences. Since the publication of John Aitchison's seminal documents on compositional data in 1982 and 1986, the scientific production of papers using compositional data methods in Social Sciences has increased exponentially in several fields. The purpose of this paper focuses on multiple categories of Social Sciences and offers a comprehensive approach through bibliometrics methods, of the application of CoDa since 1988. Using various bibliometric techniques of productivity and graphic mapping, this document determines the evolution that research in compositional data has experienced, the most relevant journals and the research topics that have been addressed in different fields of research, among other issues. The findings reveal that the publication of papers applying compositional data has increased exponentially over the last 30 years, highlighting the contributions that have been made by the fields of 'geosciences', 'geography' and 'geology', 'health' and 'environmental science' to this development. The Journal of Geochemical Exploration , the Journal of Archaeological Science , Archaeometry , the Journal of Archaeological Science - Reports , t he International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health are the main journals that have contributed to this development. This paper argues that a greater understanding of the role of emotions in experiencing leadership, the impact of role models and cultures of the workplace and profession, may enable further development for effective leadership development at undergraduate level and beyond. Leadership has gained prominence as a necessary skill in nursing literature and policy, linking its importance to patient safety, working cultures, resilience and emotional labour globally. Viewed as essential in many undergraduate nursing programmes and a requirement by professional regulators, there is a globally agreed acceptance of its importance. Despite this, the focus on evaluating and researching the effectiveness of leadership learning and through experiences of students in contexts of learning remain limited. This paper presents a discussion on the importance of experiences of leadership, exploring the emotional impact and how enabling reflexivity and critical analysis can be integrated in education. An approach is proposed for nursing education where the emotional impact of experiencing leadership is given significance. Experiences of leadership in practice and educational learning in higher education should allow students to reflect and conceptualise experience, aligning educational contexts of learning. The study focuses on parental perceptions of causes of child labour in rural and urban areas of Ghana. The research is grounded on qualitative research techniques by specifically utilising in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observation to collect the necessary data for the study. In this approach, the data gathering happened in Phases 1 and 2 of the research study at the research sites in rural areas, and urban areas. The 60 participants included government officials, representatives from NGOs, and both parents whose children were involved in child labour and parents whose children were not involved. Much theoretical and empirical evidence is presented to argue that child labour has a multiplicity of causes including cultural practices, socialisation, poverty, and lack of mechanisation of work. This paper finds that the socio-cultural contexts of child labour play a critical role in children's involvement in farming in the rural area while poverty also contributes to children's engagement in artisanal fishing work in the slum urban communities in Ghana. This paper recommends that child labour must be tackled in a coordinated manner on a cross-sectoral basis and there is the need to adopt policies that would address the category of work that falls within worst forms of child labour (WFCL).
