The design of energy and climate policy is usually seen as an 'expert' domain, relying on technical tools such as economic analysis. However, policy requires the support of politicians and citizens alike, through the democratic process. Many policies, such as reducing carbon emissions from homes and transport, also affect people's lives directly. It is thus necessary to supplement technical analysis with methods that allow an exploration of people's views, values and behaviours. One such method is codesign, whereby groups of citizens work with policy analysts to develop strategies informed by the lived experience of citizens, as well as the specialist knowledge of analysts. There is a history of co-design approaches in public services such as healthcare, but there have been few attempts to co-design public policy measures. This paper reports on a Citizens' Panel, a representative group of people working with specialists to create co-designed policy recommendations for reducing carbon emissions from homes. The process revealed that policy co-design can provide detailed, viable proposals. In this case, panellists emphasised the necessity of leadership and support from government; tailored, consistent information; targeted regulation; and financial incentives. This paper presents a machine learning (ML) model designed to speed up the appraisal of geologic CO 2 storage sites by predicting the effectiveness in trapping and accommodating CO 2 in saline aquifers. Considering the urgency of de-risking as much geologic CO 2 storage resources as possible to help with CO 2 emission reduction Paris' goal, ML-based reservoir modelling has been documented as proper tool when a faster, good approximate, and less expensive approach is needed to surrogate multiple assessments of storage sites traditionally performed by long-timeframe and multi-stage geologic CO 2 storage numerical modelling approach. In this paper, a case study is presented. It consisted of a dataset comprised of six geologic aquifer parameters (CO 2 residual saturation, horizontal permeability, vertical to horizontal permeability ratio, porosity, brine salinity, and CO 2 flow rate) and elapsed time as input data, and as output data the CO 2 trapping mechanism indices (Solubility Trapping Index, Residual Trapping Index, and Structural Trapping Index) along with the dynamic storage capacity (CO 2 injected volume). Such dataset was used to train and test the artificial neural network (ANN) model. The dataset was generated from thousands of post-processed numerical realizations at several injection periods by applying design of experiment using a synthetic aquifer model derived from the Bunter Sandstone Closure 36 aquifer numerical model, from the Southern North Sea. The ANN architecture designed in Python consisted of 3 hidden layers and 40 nodes and its performance was assessed using the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean squared error (RMSE). The ANN performance showed accuracies (R2) for training and testing with 96% and 95% of precision respectively. Practical application of the ANN model was successfully implemented to CO 2 storage aquifer sites selected from CO2Stored® database which lacking numerical models (Bunter Closure 3, 9, 35, and 40), obtaining at the end of 100-years injection case a Structural, Residual, and Solubility Trapping Index averaging 83%, 11%, and 6% respectively, with low variation coefficient indicating that trapping indices were predicted properly because aquifers selected for ANN model application have similar structures (dome-like shape) and reservoir properties. In addition, CO 2 injected volume predictions for 100-years injection case were ranging from 397 to 456 million ton (Mt) totalling 2.1 giga ton (Gt) of potential storage capacity which represents 70% of total theoretical volumetric capacity. These results show the significant impact to accelerate geologic CO 2 storage sites assessment by implementing ML-based modelling to preliminary de-risking groups of saline aquifers and reasonably consider them technically feasible CO 2 storage sites in UK. To reduce the significant carbon emissions associated with construction materials, there is growing recognition of the potential for bio-based resources, including materials derived from agricultural crops such as straw, hemp and flax. The biogenic carbon stored with plant based materials can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to other products. Uses of bio-based materials are however generally limited to non-structural, in particular as insulation, but in contrast to many other solutions straw bales can also be used structurally in low-rise construction. Despite the use of straw bales for over 100 years there is still relatively little known about their compression performance, and there are no recognised guides or standards to support structural engineers. This paper describes an experimental study into the load carrying capacity of straw bale wall assemblies. In keeping with practice in the UK, and different to previous North American studies, the wall plates do not directly bear onto the plaster coats. The aim of the paper is to characterise and compare the vertical load carrying performance of straw bale walls without and with plaster coatings, and study the effect of wall height, plaster use, and load eccentricity on compressive resistance. A series of wall assemblies were built from stacking 1 m long wheat straw bales. Wall assembly heights varied with the number of bale courses: one, two, three and four bales high. In total results from 29 tests are presented. Key findings of the study concern the influence of load eccentricity, use of plaster and wall geometry on compression performance. Few sectors in the global economy need deep decarbonization as much as heavy industry, which is currently the largest and fastest growing source of global carbon emissions. Based on an original dataset of 111 expert interviews and 52 site visits, this paper asks: what sociotechnical pathways, capabilities, and regional innovation systems are emerging to support industrial decarbonization? It combines and applies insights from evolutionary economic geography and transitions studies, such as sociotechnical capabilities and learning, as well as spatial frameworks such as challenge-oriented regional innovation systems (CoRIS) and green industrial restructuring. It utilizes these collective concepts of pathways, capabilities and CoRIS to explore the organizational and technological, individual, and systems level dimensions of industrial decarbonization efforts ongoing across Great Britain. We find that within industrial net-zero clusters, spatial and technological proximities are being effectively leveraged, especially through new forms of networking, collaboration, and partnerships. CoRIS provides the basis for greater reflection on perennial transitions issues, both within and across clusters, related to incumbency and innovation, in addition to spotlighting emergent issues such as light versus deep green restructuring and incremental versus transformative change. In simpler terms, industrial decarbonization unfolds as a multi-scalar process. Industrial decarbonization exhibits both incremental and transformative patterns of change. Energy poverty is driven by four factors: poverty; high energy prices; energy-inefficiency; and specific household characteristics. Increasingly refined definitions of energy poverty (and/or vulnerability) identify types or locations of households most likely to be suffering it. But there is also a place for a different approach, considering poverty reduction directly, as poverty is a necessary component within all energy poverty definitions. This paper investigates how high the UK's top marginal tax rates would need to be, to provide funds to lift low-income UK households above the poverty threshold as defined by the low-income-high-cost (LIHC) and 10% energy poverty indicators. It finds that the increased top tax rates would still be in line with those of other European OECD countries. Using recent and new research on income elasticities of CO2 emissions, it then estimates the net direct effects on CO2 emissions of this redistribution. For both scenarios the most likely effect is a small reduction in net CO2 emissions. Further, indirect downward pressures on CO2 emissions due to reduced income among the highest earners are likely to lead to yet more favourable outcomes for net CO2 emission reduction. This study estimates total, inland, water and air transport net forward, backward and internal carbon linkages of EU's top seven emitters from 1995 to 2011. Moreover, it also reports direct emissions and intensities. Direct emissions of the seven for all four sectors mostly increased with varying proportions, while direct intensities followed a downward trend. Total, inland, water and air net backward emissions were reasonably stable excluding Germany who's total and inland net backward emissions sharply declined during 2000 while water and air emissions increased sharply. Although some nations witnessed a decrease, overall total, inland and air transport net forward emissions increased. While water transport net forward emissions had huge fluxes in the middle, stabilised towards the end. Total, inland, and air transport internal emissions for most of the nations increased over time. However, water transport internal emissions except for the UK were reasonably stable. 'Electricity, Gas and Water Supply' was the top source of German; Polish; Italian; British and Dutch net backward emissions. France and Spain's highest carbon imports were from 'Coke, Refined Petroleum and Nuclear Fuel.' Highest destinations of net forward emissions keep changing over time. Fuel forms a significant portion of the total expenditure for many commercial fishing vessels and in some cases, profitability can be dictated by fuel costs. In many nations, including the UK, these fuel costs are reduced by cost-reducing subsidies. There is evidence of growing support from various channels that public opinion is moving towards a reassessment of fuel subsidies. Analysis of the economics of the UK fishing fleet, using publicly available industry-supplied data, implies that the nominal annual value of fuel tax concessions for diesel is between £ 150–180 million per year (2009–2019). That support is largely provided to the most fuel-intensive fishing methods, such as mobile demersal trawls and dredges. Results show that, without the current fuel tax concession, several fleet segments would be deemed unprofitable. Abstract: Thirty years ago, Adams (1981) depicted a future UK where everyone was a millionaire lorry driver, simply by extrapolating from contemporary official transport growth assumptions. These assumptions underpinned the ‘predict and provide’ approach which then characterised transport planning. Twenty years later, the New Deal for Transport White Paper (1998) abandoned ‘predict and provide’ as unsustainable. This paper argues that the same growth assumptions that Adams took to their logical (absurd) conclusion have re-emerged to define both transport and the drivers of transport demand. While non-aviation transport is supposed to be carbon-neutral by 2050, the implied reductions in emissions rely on an absolute decoupling of transport demand and its drivers for which there is no evidence in current planning. Targets rely on optimistic, narrowly framed technology forecasts and behaviour change assumptions which appear highly unlikely in the present socio-political climate. Moreover, such is the cost of mitigating these tensions between economic growth and other concerns, it is argued that the targeted outcomes of current policy are as undesirable as they are unlikely. The paper concludes by calling for a transport policy which considers mobility in an integrated, holistic fashion, rather than merely as a dimension of economic growth. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Among the various sustainability goals of higher education institutions (HEIs), reducing energy use and carbon emissions are particularly important. However, not much is known about energy demand from the higher education sector – especially since there is a lack of robust models of energy demand in this sector. This paper, the first to utilize a panel dataset and advanced panel econometric techniques in order to model energy use in higher education, investigates variations in energy use between HEIs (cross-sectional analysis), and also changes in energy use over time (temporal analysis), using the UK as a case study. We argue that panel dataset and methods are more useful for understanding growth (and reduction) in energy use within the HE sector than the methods used within previous cross-sectional studies. Results show that, over time and also across the sector, energy consumption in the HEIs increases with increases in income and floor space, but at a slower rate. As HEIs grow overall (in terms of income, floor space, student and staff number) over time, they become more 'energy efficient' (using less energy per unit of area, population or income), indicating economies of scale in the temporal dimension. Results also show that after controlling for income and size, research intensive HEIs consume more energy. We also find a small but statistically significant effect of energy prices on energy consumption, as might be expected. Simulation using the model parameters for an example scenario suggests that energy consumption will continue to increase unless there is a significant change in the policies driving income growth and spatial expansion in the HE sector in the UK. Abstract In the UK, housing has been identified as a major sector for contributing to the 80% reduction in carbon emissions over the 1990 baseline by 2050, required by the Climate Change Act 2008. However, pre-1919 housing stock is the least energy efficient and consequently poses challenges to meeting this target. Using a mixed methods approach, the current study demonstrates that, in actuality, there is a significant potential for reducing emissions among this sub-sector of housing, and that the major barriers to energy efficiency retrofits concern a lack of funding, the payback period for the investment, disruption to home life and finding a trustworthy and skilled installer. Moreover, this study finds that homeowners are motivated primarily by the desire to improve home comfort and aesthetics along with a reduction in energy bills rather than in reducing carbon emissions. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving the viability of retrofitting pre-1919 homes through enhanced financial resources, policy support and the promotion of social and economic benefits. The following literature review sets out the state-of-the-art research relating to smart building principles and smart energy systems in UK higher education university campuses. The paper begins by discussing the carbon impact of the sector and the concept of 'smart campuses' applied to the sector in the context of decarbonisation. Opportunities and challenges associated with integrating smart energy systems at the university campus from a policy and technical perspective are then discussed. This is followed by a review of building and campus-scale frameworks supporting a transition to smart energy campuses using the BPIE' Smart Buildings' framework. The paper finds that the complexity of achieving net-zero carbon emissions for new and existing higher education buildings and energy systems can be addressed with the adoption of 'smart building principles' and integrating 'smartness' into their energy systems. Several universities in the UK and worldwide are integrating smart services and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their operations following the smart campus premise. At the building level, existing frameworks often create conceptual roadmaps for the smart building premise or propose technical implementation and assessment methods. At university campus scale, implementation typically comes through single-vector interventions, and only few examples exist that propose a multi-vector approach. Comparisons of the drivers and the decision-making process are made, with carbon and cost reduction being the most prominent from leveraging distributed energy generation. Dynamic tariffs play an important role in demand response, contributing to smoothing power consumption and reducing generation capacity requirement and carbon emission. However, in the existing works, tariffs are usually designed without comprehensive consideration, such as potential user responses to tariffs. Thus, assuming an electricity trading market contains a utility company and multiple residential users, a dynamic tariff design method is proposed in this paper, considering user responses to tariff changes. Leveraging the non-intrusive load monitoring technique, rated power and user preference features for each appliance are acquired by the utility company to quantify user comfort (discomfort) based on derived user appliance usage habits. Then, a bi-level Stackelberg game model is built on the supply side for designing optimal dynamic tariffs and imitating the influence of tariff changes on DR plans for users. The upper level represents the utility company, trying to maximize utility profit, social welfare and carbon emission reduction. While the lower level represents users, aiming to minimize electricity bills and user discomfort. By solving such an optimization problem with multiple objectives, a novel hybrid probabilistic multi-objective evolutionary algorithm balancing evolutionary efficiency and stability is applied where random forest is adopted to boost performance. The proposed model is benchmarked with two state-of-the-art pricing methods and validated on a publicly accessible REFIT dataset, where low-rate power measurements are collected from real houses in the UK. The experimental results show the proposed model generally outperforms benchmarks on dynamic tariff design in achieving peak-shaving and low carbon emission while preserving user satisfaction. As a major emission contributor with significant growth potential, the light goods vehicles (vans) play an important part in achieving net-zero. In 2020 the UK government committed to phasing out sales of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vans by 2030, but the impact of the policy and how far are we to decarbonize the entire van fleet by 2050 is unclear. This paper investigates the CO 2 and NO x emission trends in the van sector in Great Britain under the 2030 ICE phase-out. The instantaneous emission model PHEM, NAEI emissions inventory and remote sensing measurements are used to parameterize real-world driving emission factors of CO 2 and NO x. Scenarios have been set out to assess the impact of enablers and barriers affecting the pace of emission reductions. Results suggest vans are on track to reach the tailpipe net-zero target by 2050 under all scenarios, and the speed of NO x reduction is even faster. This paper proposes a realistic model for energy and carbon management of an advanced municipal wastewater treatment works. Through minimisation of total cost of operations, it provides operators with a visual daily operational schedule based on varying tariffs. This site is the first in the UK with a mixed operational strategy for biomethane produced on site: to burn in CHP (Combined Heat and Power) engines to create electricity, burn in Steam Boilers for onsite steam use or inject the biomethane into the gas distribution network - Natural Gas can be imported to make up shortfalls in biomethane if required. Implemented using a novel mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach, results indicate that biomethane injection should be maximised for the highest financial gain - the driving force for optimising the remaining operations being the site electricity imports and whether the electricity imported 'generates' carbon emissions. This paper examines the impact of geographical location on the energy consumption of double deck battery electric buses operating in four UK cities. By considering seasonal variation in ambient temperature and an assumed battery degradation process, the implications on operational cost and carbon emissions were investigated. Using a MATLAB/Simulink model the total energy demand of a vehicle operating on the UKBC was simulated. Energy consumption was combined with hourly seasonal averages of carbon intensity (gCO 2 /kWh) and wholesale electricity costs (£) to assess charging at different times of the day and year. At the beginning of life, the range could decrease by up to 17.3% due to heating load requirements. From beginning of life to end of life, range was predicted to decrease by up to 26%. The UK has enacted one of the most ambitious carbon reduction targets striving for net zero emissions by 2050. A major challenge to achieving this is decarbonizing heating demand with almost 25 m homes in need of retrofit. This paper explores a range of retrofit interventions to the English residential stock. These are deployed immediately in 2021 to investigate the maximum carbon reduction that could be achieved. The impact of these interventions on embodied and operational carbon emissions is estimated from 2021 to 2050. The resulting emissions are compared to estimated national carbon budgets, in order to ascertain, if, and with what combination of retrofit measures, the English housing stock can stay within carbon budgets. The results show that mass deployment of air source or ground source heat pumps can reliably achieve combined embodied and operational emissions within national carbon budgets by 2050. The careful selection of insulation materials is key in bringing down the embodied emissions, particularly to meet stricter carbon budgets. The identified scale and pace of deployment thus needed to stay within carbon budgets is likely to pose enormous practical challenges. With the increasing deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and operation of diverse energy devices, different types of multi-energy systems (MESs) emerge. Constrained by physical networks, when economic and environmental benefits are considered, how to stimulate the potential of energy shifting and conversion across temporal and spatial dimensions becomes a significant issue. This requires an innovative multi-energy trading mechanism. Due to the diversity of building types and energy categories, as well as the loads complementarity, the university community is an applicable user cluster for the investigation of multi-energy trading. The district energy operator (DEO) contributes to making deals via the interactive information of prices and quantities, besides protecting the prosumers' privacy. This paper treats carbon as a direct trading object and proposes an internal multi-energy trading mechanism, which adopts an auction based on the demands for cooling, heating, electricity and carbon, and is formed as a nonlinear equilibrium program with equilibrium constraints (EPEC) problem. The nonlinear EPEC problem is then solved by particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. It is a novel mechanism in which the prosumers submit prices and quantities simultaneously, instead of utilizing traditional linear supply functions. A hypothetical university community in the U.K. is studied to discover the internal price signals. Simulation results show that, the proposed trading mechanism benefits from exploiting the energy sharing potential of the community MES, as well as improving the players' revenues. The decarbonisation of heat requires a transition from gas boilers to low-carbon heating systems such as heat pumps. Efficiency gains can be achieved by linking heating systems through ambient loops called Fifth Generation District Heating and Cooling (5GDHC) networks. The UK needs working demonstrators to understand both the technical and practical challenges in the heat transition. The Balanced Energy Network (BEN) links two buildings on LSBU's campus and is the UK's first 5GDHC system at scale and among the first in the world to be retrofit in parallel to an incumbent gas system and include an active demand side response control system to toggle between energy vectors in way that minimises cost and carbon emissions. This paper presents performance data from its first year of operation in baseline mode, as it was commissioned and optimised. High temperature heat pumps were retrofit to an existing gas boiler circuit and match the 79 °C output temperature of the gas boiler system. Energy policy is too often not designed for energy consumers in a low-cost and consumer-friendly manner. This paper proposes a novel Stackelberg game and Blockchain-based framework that enables consumer-centric decarbonization by automating iterative negotiations between policy makers and consumers or generators to reduce carbon emissions. This iterative negotiation is modeled as a Stackelberg game-theoretic problem, and securely facilitated by Blockchain technologies. The policy maker formulates carbon prices and monetary compensation rates to dynamically incentivize the carbon reduction, whereas consumers and generators schedule their power profiles to minimize bills and maximize profits of generation, respectively. The negotiating agreement is yielded by reaching a Stackelberg equilibrium. The exchanged information and controlling functions are realized by using smart contracts of Blockchain technologies. Case studies of GB power systems show that the proposed framework can incentivize 9% more bill savings for consumers and 45.13% more energy generation from renewable energy sources. As a consumer-centric decarbonization framework, it can at least reduce carbon emissions by 40%. Abstract: Over 80% of UK peatlands are degraded to some extent and their widespread restoration could contribute to meeting various climate change, water quality and biodiversity policy challenges. Economic analysis of costs and benefits is, however, hampered by scientific uncertainty and a lack of data on biophysical conditions as well as the impacts and costs of restoration. This paper presents a simple ‘ready-reckoner’ of possible net economic benefits under different combinations of simplifying ‘what if?’ assumptions for key restoration parameters. The results strongly suggest that even a narrow focus on carbon benefits alone is sufficient to justify restoration in many cases, and the inclusion of possible additional non-carbon benefits reinforces this. However, results are sensitive to assumptions and better data for, in particular, restoration costs associated with modest emission savings from lightly degraded sites would be helpful. Eliminating the use of natural gas for non-domestic heat supply is an imperative component of net-zero targets. Techno-economic analyses of competing options for low-carbon heat supply are essential for decision makers developing decarbonisation strategies. This paper investigates the impact various heat supply configurations can have in UK supermarkets by using heat recovery principles from refrigeration systems under different climatic conditions. The methodology builds upon a steady-state model that has been validated in previous studies. All refrigeration integrated heating and cooling (RIHC) systems employ CO 2 booster refrigeration to recover heat and provide space heating alongside various technologies such as thermal storage, air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) and direct electric heaters. Seven cases evaluating various technology combinations are analysed and compared against a conventional scenario in which the building is heated with a natural gas boiler. The specific combinations of technologies analysed here contrasts trade-offs and is a first in the literature. The capital costs of these projects are considered, giving insights into their business case. Results indicate that electric heaters are not cost-competitive in supermarkets. Meanwhile, RIHC and ASHP configurations are the most attractive option, and if a thermal storage tank system with advanced controls is included, the benefits increase even further. Best solutions have a 6.3% ROI, a payback time of 16 years while reducing energy demand by 62% and CO 2 emissions by 54%. Abstract: Atmospheric CO2 concentration is one of three planetary boundaries that have already been overstepped, risking unacceptable environmental change. Rapid and deep emission reductions (≈6% per annum) are required to minimise the time spent outside the safe planetary boundary for atmospheric CO2 concentration. This paper focuses on how one sector, residential, in one country, the UK, could contribute to emission reductions of this order and urgency being achieved. A review is made of the current trend in UK residential emissions and energy use, and of the plans and policies in place to reduce emissions from this sector. It is demonstrated that these are likely to deliver emission reductions of under 2% per annum to 2020. It is shown that key policies are self-limiting, locking us into action at the current level of social/political will. An analysis of current and proposed policies identifies their limitations and the unresolved barriers to action. New policies and structures are proposed to overcome these limitations. These include strong support for the proposal that the Green Deal should allow consumers to make up the difference between technology costs and energy cost savings should they wish, and reorganising the energy market to make supplying high consuming dwellings less profitable than acting as an ESCO and reducing consumption. However, it is concluded that the key barrier is psychological and a rapid paradigm shift is required towards living within a safe operating space as individuals and societies; policies must promote and be ready to take advantage of this paradigm shift. Abstract: This paper investigates the CO2 impact of current and future UK rail track and estimates the material, process and transport emissions associated with construction, maintenance and end-of-life activities for designs at high and low traffic loads. Analysis shows that for current track configurations, track with concrete sleepers has the lowest CO2 impact, followed by steel, hardwood and softwood. Several potential future rail track designs have been analysed including embedded rail and double and quadruple-headed rail. All future track designs have a lower impact than current designs, but this improvement is more marked at high traffic loads. Up to a 40% reduction in CO2 impact could be achieved if the UK rail network was to move from conventional track design to a double-headed embedded rail design. Key levers for reducing the CO2 impact of track are identified as service life extension, traffic load reduction and the selection of low impact track designs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper the driving factors of carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation in the European Union are examined for the years 2000–2018, separated into three time periods using decomposition analysis, and particularly LMDI-I. Seven driving factors are examined, namely the economic activity effect, the population effect, the electricity intensity effect, the electricity trade effect, the energy intensity effect, the generation structure effect, and the emissions factor effect. The results showed that the main driving factor leading to increased carbon dioxide emissions is the economic activity effect counterbalanced mainly by the contribution of the generation structure effect. Moreover, a decoupling analysis between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions was carried out aiming to identify the state of each country for each period. Abstract: Transport is a major user of carbon-based fuels, and achievement of the targets set at the Kyoto Protocol and elsewhere means that the EU and national governments must reduce CO2 emissions in all sectors, including transport. This paper reports on a recently completed study for the UK government on the options available to meet a 60% CO2 reduction target by 2030 in the UK transport sector. The study follows a backcasting study approach, developing a business as usual baseline for transport emissions, and two alternative scenarios to 2030. Different policy measures are assessed and assembled into mutually supporting policy packages (PP). Although 2030 seems a long way ahead, action must be taken now if the targets for CO2 reduction are to be met. The achievement of a carbon-efficient transport future, combined with holding travel levels at present levels, is likely to be very difficult. A major transformation in the way transport and urban planning is carried out is required. As transport and urban planners, we need to think very differently in tackling the new environmental and liveability imperative. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions for a range of technologies which capture CO 2 from a variety of sources and transport it to permanent storage locations such as depleted oil fields or saline aquifers or supply it for use. CO 2 transport is the intermediate step in the CCUS chain and can use pipeline systems or sea carriers depending on the geographical location and the size of the emitter. In this paper, CO 2 shipping is critically reviewed in order to explore its techno-economic feasibility in comparison to other transportation options. This review provides an overview of CO 2 shipping for CCUS and scrutinises its potential role for global CO 2 transport. It also provides insights into the technological advances in marine carrier CO 2 transportation for CCUS, including preparation for shipping, and in addition investigates existing experience and discusses relevant transport properties and optimum conditions. Thus far, liquefied CO 2 transportation by ship has been mainly used in the food and brewery industries for capacities varying between 800 m3 and 1000 m3. However, CCUS requires much greater capacities and only limited work is available on the large-scale transportation needs for the marine environment. Despite most literature suggesting conditions near the triple-point, in-depth analysis shows optimal transport conditions to be case sensitive and related to project variables. Ship-based transport of CO 2 is a better option to decarbonise dislocated emitters over long distances and for relatively smaller quantities in comparison to offshore pipeline, as pipelines require a continuous flow of compressed gas and have a high cost-dependency on distance. Finally, this work explores the potential environmental footprint of marine chains, with particular reference to the energy implications and emissions from ships and their management. A careful scrutiny of potential future developments highlights the fact, that despite some existing challenges, implementation of CO 2 shipping is crucial to support CCUS both in the UK and worldwide. • Environmental life cycle impacts are assessed for current and future heating. • Electric air source heat pumps are the lowest-impact option to decarbonise heating. • Boilers using H 2 from natural gas with carbon capture cannot achieve Net Zero. • Boilers using hydrogen from electrolysis have the highest impacts in 17 categories. • The proposed 2050 Net Zero heating mixes reduce GHG emissions by 84–94% per kWh. Heating and hot water within buildings account for almost a quarter of global energy consumption. Approximately 90% of this heat is derived directly from the combustion of fossil fuels, primarily natural gas, leading to the unabated emission of carbon dioxide. This paper assesses the environmental sustainability of a range of heating technologies and scenarios on a life cycle basis. The major technologies considered are natural gas boilers, air source heat pumps, hydrogen boilers and direct electric heaters. The scenarios use the UK as an example due to its status as a major economy with a legally-binding net-zero carbon target for 2050; they consider plausible future electricity and natural gas mixes, including the potential growth of domestic shale gas. The environmental impacts are estimated using ReCiPe 2016. Current gas boilers have a climate change impact of 220 g CO 2 eq./kWh of heat, which could fall to 64 g CO 2 eq./kWh for boilers fuelled by hydrogen derived from natural gas with carbon capture. Heat from electric air source heat pumps or hydrogen from electrolysis can achieve net zero with a decarbonised electricity mix, but electrolysis has the highest energy demand of all options which leads to the highest impacts across 17 of the 19 categories. Despite their high carbon emissions, gas boilers remain the lowest impact option across 12 categories as they avoid the impacts related to electricity generation, including metal depletion, toxicities and eutrophication. By 2050, the best performing scenario sees the climate change impact of the heating mix fall by 95%; this is achieved by prioritising electric air source heat pumps without hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, alongside demand reduction. The results show that, if infrastructure and financial challenges can be overcome, there are several viable decarbonisation strategies for heating, with heat pumps offering the most environmentally sustainable option of those considered here. Although the penetration of renewable energy in power systems has been substantially increased globally in the last decade, fossil fuels are still important in providing the essential flexibility required to reliably maintain the system balance. In 2019, more than one quarter of power generation in Europe and over 40% of the UK's electricity generation was from fossil fuels (mainly gas). For achieving the net-zero greenhouse gas emission target around the middle of this century, these fossil fuels have to be decarbonised in the coming decades. Bulk-scale energy storage has been recognised as a key technology to overcome the reduced dispatchability associated with the decrease of fossil fuels in generation. Taking the UK power system as a case study, this paper presents an assessment of geological resources for bulk-scale compressed air energy storage (CAES), and an optimal planning framework for CAES in combination with solar and wind to replace fossil fuels in the power generation system. The analysis reveals up to 725 GWh of ready-to-use capacity by utilising existing underground salt caverns in the UK. These potential CAES sites with added solar and wind generation equal to the generation from fossil fuels in 2018 can reduce carbon emissions by 84% with a cost increase by 29%, compared to the system in 2018. The results indicate the plausibly achievable cost-effectiveness of CAES as bulk-scale energy storage for power system decarbonisation in countries the geological resources are available. A range of technology and policy actions can be put in place to reduce carbon emissions from passenger cars, this paper aims to prioritise between them, based on their likely impact and uncertainty. Formal sensitivity analysis techniques are used for the first time to determine the relative importance of factors affecting future emissions from passenger vehicles in Great Britain. The two most important actions to limit future life-cycle CO 2 emissions involve shifting to electric vehicles and limiting trends towards larger and more powerful vehicles. According to our analysis over 80% of the uncertainty in future cumulative CO 2 emissions can be attributed to uncertainty in electric vehicle uptake and vehicle size and power. These variables are a priority for transport policy makers.
