Biorefinery systems are playing pivotal roles in the technological support of resource efficiency for circular bioeconomy. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence presents great potential in handling scientific tasks of high-dimensional complexity. This review article scrutinizes the status of machine learning (ML) applications in four critical biorefinery systems (i.e. composting, fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and thermochemical conversions) as well as their advancements against traditional modeling techniques of mechanistic approach. The contents cover their algorithm selections, modeling challenges, and prospective improvements. Perspectives are sketched to further inform collective efforts on crucial aspects. Nano-biochar application was investigated for anaerobic digestion of orange peel waste. The application for methane production focused on the optimization of biochar feedstock, rescue of failed digesters, and microbial succession analysis. It showed that sewage sludge (SS) derived biochar had the highest performance enhancement among the different feedstocks, which could be ascribed to the improvement of electron transfer, interspecies hydrogen transfer, and supply of trace elements. Subsequently, nano SS biochar-amended digestate was evaluated for rescuing failed digesters, and the experimental results indicated its positive roles through gradual bioaugmentation operation. The dynamic analysis of microbial succession indicated the successful application was through the mechanism of restoring partially the functional microbial communities. The major reconstruction of functional microorganisms included bacteria phyla Hydrogenispora (24.5%) and Defluviitoga (18.8%) as well as methanogenic genera of Methanosarcina (41.5%) and Methanobacterium (27.3%). The enhanced production of microbial lipids suitable for manufacturing biodiesel from oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi is critically reviewed. Recent advances in several aspects involving the biosynthetic pathways of lipids, current conversion efficiencies using various carbon sources, intensification strategies for improving lipid yield and productivity in L. starkeyi fermentation, and lipid extraction approaches are analyzed from about 100 papers for the past decade. Key findings on strategies are summarized, including (1) optimization of parameters, (2) cascading two-stage systems, (3) metabolic engineering strategies, (4) mutagenesis followed by selection, and (5) co-cultivation of yeast and algae. The current technical limitations are analyzed. Research suggestions like examination of more gene targets via metabolic engineering are proposed. The aim of this work was to study the effects of plastics (high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) on reactor performance and microbial communities during acidogenic fermentation of food waste for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA). The addition of HDPE and PS increased total VFA yields by 28% and 47%, respectively, whereas the addition of PP and PET decreased total VFA yields by 6% and 2%, respectively. The highest enhancing performance of PS could be ascribed to its highly porous structure that could provide immobilization effects for microbial growth. Degradation of various plastics was confirmed by FESEM results, but the degrees were limited (i.e., 3.9-8.7%). Bacterial analysis showed that the addition of various plastics altered the community diversity. Phylum Thermotogae and genus Defluviitoga dominated all the reactors. Potential HDPE- and PS-degrading microbes could belong to genus Clostridium_sensu_stricto_8, while Tepidanaerobacter_syntrophicus could be PET-degrading microbes., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. This work studied the use of a horizontal high-solid digester for the decentralized anaerobic treatment of horticultural waste (fallen leaves), where the effect of intermittent mixing by a modified double helical ribbon impeller was investigated. Before experimental verification, the flow pattern and theoretical mixing time were first characterized by CFD simulation. Subsequently, three mixing time intervals (i.e., 3 min/3 hr; 18 min/3 hr; 108 min/3 hr) and one control setup (i.e., without mixing) were compared for their performance during start-up and semi-continuous operation. It was found that minimal mixing was necessary for an efficient digester's start-up but increased mixing intensity for semi-continuous operation. The results were further interpreted by correlating the digester performance and microbial communities. A wood waste-derived biochar was applied to food-waste anaerobic digestion to evaluate the feasibility of its utilisation to create a circular economy. This biochar was first purposed for the upgrading of the biogas from the said anaerobic digestion, before treating and recovering the nutrients in the solid fraction of the digestate, which was finally employed as a biofertilizer for the organic cultivation of three green leafy vegetables: kale, lettuce and rocket salad. Whilst the amount of CO 2 the biochar could absorb from the biogas was low (11.17 mg g -1 ), it could potentially be increased by modifying through physical and chemical methods. Virgin as well as CO 2 -laden biochar were able to remove around 31% of chemical oxygen demand, 8% of the ammonia and almost 90% of the total suspended solids from the digestate wastewater, which was better than a dewatering process via centrifugation but worse than the industry standard of a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane bioreactor. Nutrients were recovered in the solid fraction of the digestate residue filtered by the biochar, and utilised as a biofertilizer that performed similarly to a commercial complete fertilizer in terms of aerial fresh weight growth for all three vegetables cultivated. A food waste treating system was proposed in this study by combining biochar-assisted high-solid anaerobic digestion and subsequent steam gasification of the digestate. The effect of solid level, biochar dosage in anaerobic digestion on the properties of biogas, syngas, and final biochar products were investigated. Results showed that at a high total solid level and biochar dosage of 25 g/L and 50 g/L, the accumulative methane yield reached 110.3 mL CH 4 /g VS and 126.7 mL CH 4 /g VS, respectively. From steam gasification of different digestates under 850 °C for 15 min, a maximum of 34.92 mmol/g for the hydrogen yield and 11.44 MJ/m 3 for the higher heating value could be obtained for the syngas. Furthermore, the by-product produced from steam gasification was a nutrient-enriched porous biochar, which was suitable to be used as compost. Food and energy requirements are increasing globally, and the challenge is to meet these demands in a sustainable manner. Oil palm has a relatively high productivity, but produces the lignocellulosic residue of empty fruit bunches (OPEFB). In this study, wet oxidation pretreatment is utilized to overcome the recalcitrance of OPEFB during semi-continuous anaerobic digestion (AD) with between 19.7 and 52.7% improvement over the control, and near total cellulose and hemicellulose content could be degraded. Clarified manure, the water phase of cattle and dairy manure after filtration, is further tested for its effect on methane production by providing necessary micronutrients and vitamins. In this study, horticultural waste (HW) and sewage sludge (SS) with different mass ratios were co-gasified with steam at different temperatures to investigate the product distribution, gas synergistic interaction, and optimal design for gas products from co-gasification process. Results showed that with the increase of SS ratio in blends, the H 2 content was increased and the syngas yield was decreased. The synergistic interaction was more significant at higher temperature which promoted the H 2 production probably due to the reduction and steam oxidation of Fe species in SS during co-gasification process. The optimized highest effective gas content (82.92 vol%) was achieved with the highest HHV (11.40 MJ/m 3 ) at the conditions of SS ratio = 0.80 and temperature of 900 °C. The impact of algal biochar addition on mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion of algal biomass and food waste was investigated with a focus on semi-continuous operations and functional microbial communities. Under batch co-digestion, the highest co-digestion synergy was observed for a mixture of 25% food waste and 75% algal biomass. During semi-continuous co-digestion of 25% food waste-75% algal biomass mixture, biochar amended digesters exhibited a 12-54% increase in average methane yield (275.8-394.6 mL/gVS) compared to the controls. Elevated temperature induced narrow distributions of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by inhibiting the production of branched VFAs. Genus Proteiniphilum was selectively enriched by 3.2 folds in mesophilic digesters with biochar amendment while genus Defluviitoga was selectively enriched in thermophilic digesters due to elevated temperature. Methanogenic communities were significantly different in mesophilic and thermophilic digesters. The relationship between mixing time and methane production was investigated by anaerobically co-digesting food waste (FW) and chicken manure (CM) at four different organic loading rates. The mixing pattern and turbulence intensity obtained from CFD were adopted to evaluate the mixing performance in digesters with different viscosities. The simulated mixing time from CFD was selected as a reference for the first time to analyze the methane yield. The results showed that if the digester was well mixed under intermittent mixing mode with relatively short mixing time, then extending mixing time or changing intermittent mixing to continuous mixing would have no substantial effects on methane production. By contrast, continuously mixed digesters performed better when the intermittent mixing modes cannot make the digester get to a high degree of uniformity. To find the optimal operation parameters and provide an explanation of methanogenic pathway for methane production in mesophilic (35 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic digestion (MAD, TAD) of soybean curd residue (SCR), MAD and MAD were contrastively investigated for 95 days. The maximum available OLR was identified as 3.3 gVS/L for both MAD and TAD. Compared to MAD, TAD exhibited a 20% higher average methane yield (0.591 L/gVS) and a 7.5% higher volatile solids removal efficiency (74.1 ± 10.4%). Bacterial phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria dominated in MAD digesters while genus Defluviitoga was selectively enriched in TAD digesters due to higher temperature and organic loading pressure. Principal coordinates analysis of methanogen community showed that both temperature and OLR were crucial environmental variables shifting the taxonomic patterns of the methanogens. A three-stage anaerobic digester setup was configured and evaluated for enhanced methane production during co-digestion of food waste and waste activated sludge and the corresponding bacterial and methanogen communities were characterized. Results showed that the average methane yield (0.496 L/gVS) in the three-stage digester was 13-52% higher than that of one- and two-stage digesters. Compared to controls, an increase of 12-47% in volatile solids reduction was achieved in the three-stage digester (69.3 ± 6.7%). Bacterial phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes dominated in one-, two- and three-stage digester while genera Pseudomonas, Tissierella, and Petrimonas were selectively enriched in the three-stage digester due to functional segregation. Taxonomic analysis identified 8 dominant methanogen genera, of which Methanosarcina, Methanosaeta, Methanobacterium and Methanolinea collectively accounted for 80%. With increasing OLR and digester stage number, the dominant methanogenic pathway shifted from hydrogenotrophic pattern to acetoclastic pattern and reached a final synergy of these two., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of activated carbon (AC) on methane production and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were evaluated through comparing the anaerobic digestion performance and transformation of ARGs among anaerobic mono-digestion of food waste, co-digestion of food waste and chicken manure, and co-digestion of food waste and waste activated sludge. Results showed that adding AC in anaerobic digesters improved methane yield by at least double through the enrichment of bacteria and archaea. Conventional digestion process showed ability in removing certain types of ARGs, such as tetA, tetX, sul1, sul2, cmlA, floR, and intl1. Supplementing AC in anaerobic digester enhanced the removal of most of the ARGs in mono-digestion of food waste. Lignocellulosic biomass waste, a heterogeneous complex of biodegradables and non-biodegradables, accounts for large proportion of municipal solid waste. Due to limitation of single-stage treatment, a two-stage hybrid AD-gasification system was proposed in this work, in which AD acted as pre-treatment to convert biodegradables into biogas followed by gasification converting solid residue into syngas. Energy performance of single and two-stage systems treating 3 typical lignocellulosic wastes was studied using both experimental and numerical methods. In comparison with conventional single-stage gasification treatment, this hybrid system could significantly improve the quality of produced gas for all selected biomass wastes and show its potential in enhancing total gas energy production by a maximum value of 27% for brewer's spent grain treatment at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3gVS/L/day. The compositions of food wastes and their co-gasification producer gas were compared with the existing data of sewage sludge. Results showed that food wastes are more favorable than sewage sludge for co-gasification based on residue generation and energy output. Two decentralized gasification-based schemes were proposed to dispose of the sewage sludge and food wastes in Singapore. Monte Carlo simulation-based cost-benefit analysis was conducted to compare the proposed schemes with the existing incineration-based scheme. It was found that the gasification-based schemes are financially superior to the incineration-based scheme based on the data of net present value (NPV), benefit-cost ratio (BCR), and internal rate of return (IRR). In this work, activated carbon (AC) as an effective and low-cost adsorbent was successfully prepared from carbon residue (or char, one of the by-products from woody biomass gasification) via physical activation. The surface area of char was significantly increased from 172.24 to 776.46m(2)/g after steam activation at 900°C. The obtained activated carbons were then employed for the adsorption of dye (Rhodamine B) and it was found that activated carbon obtained from steam activation exhibited the highest adsorption capability, which is mainly attributed to the higher surface area and the abundance of hydroxyl (-OH) and carboxyl (-COOH) groups on the activated carbon surface. Moreover, it was also found that the adsorption capability significantly increased under the basic condition, which can be attributed to the increased electrostatic interaction between the deprotonated (negatively charged) activated carbon and dye molecules. Furthermore, the equilibrium data were fitted into different adsorption isotherms and found to fit well with Langmuir model (indicating that dye molecules form monolayer coverage on activated carbon) with a maximum monolayer adsorption capability of 189.83mg/g, whereas the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
