Myanmar is a major rice exporter. Rice is an important source of nourishment for its population. However, rice can be contaminated with toxic elements, including arsenic, long-term exposure to which has been linked to several illnesses, including cancer. There is a paucity of published data on arsenic in Myanmar rice. This study analysed rice (n = 50) from southern, middle and northern Myanmar for both total arsenic (T-As) (by ICP-MS) and inorganic arsenic (i-As) (by species–specific hydride generation ICP-MS or HPLC-ICP-MS). The mean concentration of T-As was 110 μg kg−1(IQR 75–142 μg kg−1), of which 86 μg kg−1 (IQR 58–113 μg kg−1) was high toxicity i-As. The calculated mean i-As intake arising from typical consumption of this rice normalised to typical body weights in Myanmar was approximately 1 μg.kg-bw−1.day−1, close to the recently withdrawn WHO, PTWI of 2.1 μg.kg-bw−1.day−1and higher than the EFSA reported BMDL05 for skin cancers of 0.06 μg.kg-bw−1.day−1.

A rapid, simple, and accurate voltammetric method for quantifying total inorganic arsenic in rice was described in this work. The simplified sample pretreatment involved the addition of a mixed solution of nitric acid and L-cysteine, which facilitated the simultaneous extraction and speciation of arsenic (As(III)). To eliminate interference from complex rice matrices, magnetic composites were employed to absorb copper and other potential interference. Furthermore, As(III) was detected using linear stripping voltammetry with screen-printed electrodes modified in-situ with gold nanoparticles and L-cysteine, enhancing both sensitivity and selectivity. With this strategy, the methodology demonstrated good resistance to interference and high sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.018 mg/kg. A comparative analysis between this method and liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) showed a good correlation with an R2 of 0.995. Additionally, the method was successfully applied to determine total inorganic arsenic in commercial rice samples, yielding satisfactory results.

This study estimated the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of inorganic arsenic (iAs) from white rice ingestion in eight countries (China, Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Cambodia) in Asia by using data collected from published literature (n = 4857). ILCR of iAs exposure from white rice ingestion substantially varied with region, ranging from 0.37 to 13.46 per 10000 people, with an average of 6.12 per 10000 people. Bangladesh had the highest ILCR, followed by Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Carcinogenic risks of iAs exposure from white rice ingestion in China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Cambodia are at an unacceptable level (more than 1 per 10000 people). Linear regression analysis indicated that ingestion rate and inorganic arsenic content were the critical factors determining regional differences in carcinogenic risk of iAs exposure from white rice ingestion in Asia.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of coke and lemonade extraction methods compared to the standard 1 % v/v HNO3 method for determining inorganic arsenic (iAs) concentrations in rice bran samples using a field-deployable method (Arsenator field kit). The limit of detection (LOD) for the methods was 45 μg kg−1, comparable to existing literature. The extraction efficiencies were assessed by comparing iAs recovery rates, with coke extraction yielding the highest recovery of 127.4 %, followed by lemonade at 116.2 %, and HNO3 at 100 %. Statistical analysis indicated strong correlations between the extraction methods, particularly between HNO3 and coke (Pearson correlation coefficient, 0.990), suggesting that coke extraction is a reliable alternative to the traditional HNO3 method. However, lemonade extraction showed a lower correlation (0.940) and higher false negative rates, indicating potential limitations for regulatory compliance. Notably, at the maximum contaminant limit (MCL) of 0.100 mg kg−1, coke extraction produced an 8 % false positive rate with no false negatives, while lemonade extraction had an 8 % false positive rate and a 17 % false negative rate. This study underscores the potential of coke extraction as a cost-effective and efficient alternative for assessing iAs levels in rice products, especially in resource-limited settings. Recommendations include the standardization of coke extraction protocols and the development of robust monitoring programs to ensure food safety and public health protection against arsenic contamination. Overall, the findings contribute valuable insights for improving arsenic detection methods and regulatory compliance in food safety practices.

The data gap in food safety regulations have created misinformation leading to the rejection of commodities for trade. The evidence presented is the local regulation of arsenic in sea produce which is based on total arsenic, tAs, instead of toxic inorganic arsenic, iAs. Furthermore, tAs data in animal origin seafood has been widely proven to be dominated by the non-toxic Arsenobetaine, AsB. Therefore, if arsenic regulatory limit was set based only on tAs without reference to iAs data, seafood products might be wrongfully rejected for trade because of non-compliance to tAs limit. We provided analysis of tAs and iAs of 14 local prawn and shrimp commodities from three shrimp/prawn sector namely aquaculture (n = 3), capture (n = 5) and processed (n = 6) using effective extraction, as well as, a fit-for-purpose analytical method for iAs. A HVG-AAS method was developed and validated for iAs with LoQ of 1.6 ppb, analytical range of 0–6 ppb, repeatability RSDr of 0.5–3.1 %, coefficient of determination R2 of 0.9975, and percentage recovery of 90.9 %, while an existing method using ICP-MS was used to verify the tAs. Based on the AOAC Official Method 999.10 2005 with minor adjustments, seafood samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide under pressure in a closed vessel heated by a microwave digester. An additional step for iAs determination was necessary to ensure compatibility in HVG-AAS analysis. Further subdivision of the aquaculture and capture samples was done by dividing them into 3 fractions, namely head, flesh and peel. Comparison of tAs in all the three fractions indicated that for aquaculture sector, the highest tAs were found in the flesh (2nd highest in % weight) whereas for the capture sector, the highest amount of tAs correlated with the highest % weight of the fraction. On regulatory aspects, speciation analysis on the iAs indicated samples with quantifiable iAs value were in-compliance despite tAs were initially found to be higher than the national limits. Risk assessment of iAs indicated there were no risk for human daily intake based on the BDML0.5 value of 3.0 μg/kg b.w per day for an average 70 kg man. All findings concluded the need for doing arsenic speciation analysis of iAs along with tAs for routine monitoring of prawn/shrimp samples and to revise the local limits from tAs to iAs particularly for seafood commodities.

Arsenic (As) is a notorious toxic contamination in marine environments, while the toxicity and health risk of As is highly dependent on As species in seafoods. In this study, we hypothesized that the species-specific As bioaccumulation and species resulted in species-specific healthy risk of As in seaweeds. To test the hypothesis, we collected 10 common edible seaweeds from the coast of Hainan Island in South China Sea. Then we comparatively quantified concentration of total As and 5 major As species [AsB, DMA, MMA, As(III), and As(V)] in seaweeds. The results revealed that the concentrations of total As varied significantly among 10 seaweed species. Specially, the highest total As concentration were found in brown seaweeds, followed by red seaweeds, and green seaweeds. Furthermore, the percentage of 5 As species to total As differed significantly among 10 seaweeds. The percentage of AsB was highest in Caulerpa lentillifera (53%) and lowest in Sargassum oligocystum (13%), while that of As(V) was lowest in Caulerpa lentillifera (21%) and highest in Sargassum oligocystum (81%). The iAs [As(III) + As(V)] exhibited highest value in brown seaweeds and least value in green seaweeds. The potential human health risk assessment indicated that the consumption of brown seaweeds of Sargassum oligocystum and Sargassum polycystum could cause a considerable carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk to residents. Overall, our findings here largely validated our hypothesis that the species-specific As bioaccumulation and As species had great significance to healthy risk of As in seaweeds.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) contamination in drinking water is a global public health problem, and exposure to iAs is a known risk factor for bladder cancer. Perturbation of urinary microbiome and metabolome induced by iAs exposure may have a more direct effect on the development of bladder cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of iAs exposure on urinary microbiome and metabolome, and to identify microbiota and metabolic signatures that are associated with iAs-induced bladder lesions. We evaluated and quantified the pathological changes of bladder, and performed 16S rDNA sequencing and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics profiling on urine samples from rats exposed to low (30 mg/L NaAsO2) or high (100 mg/L NaAsO2) iAs from early life (in utero and childhood) to puberty. Our results showed that iAs induced pathological bladder lesions, and more severe effects were noticed in the high-iAs group and male rats. Furthermore, six and seven featured urinary bacteria genera were identified in female and male offspring rats, respectively. Several characteristic urinary metabolites, including Menadione, Pilocarpine, N-Acetylornithine, Prostaglandin B1, Deoxyinosine, Biopterin, and 1-Methyluric acid, were identified significantly higher in the high-iAs groups. In addition, the correlation analysis demonstrated that the differential bacteria genera were highly correlated with the featured urinary metabolites. Collectively, these results suggest that exposure to iAs in early life not only causes bladder lesions, but also perturbs urinary microbiome composition and associated metabolic profiles, which shows a strong correlation. Those differential urinary genera and metabolites may contribute to bladder lesions, suggesting a potential for development of urinary biomarkers for iAs-induced bladder cancer.

A miniaturized/portable dual-mode colorimetric analytical system was established for inorganic arsenic determination in honey and drinking water samples. Hydride generation (HG) was utilized as a sampling technique for this colorimetric system, because of its high generation efficiency and efficient matrix separation. AsH3 was generated via HG and then reacted with HAuCl4, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were formed on the paper sheet, leading the paper color changed from light yellow to dark blue, it could be readout by naked-eye (visual colorimetric mode) and a smartphone (RGB readout mode) simultaneously. The accuracy and potential application for field analysis were further confirmed by the analysis of two water samples, four honey samples and two certified reference water samples (BWB2440-2016 and GBW08650), good recoveries (90–116%) were obtained for those samples and their spiked samples.

Epidemiological studies in inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure populations have offered convincing evidence that exposure to arsenite (As (III)) and arsenate (As (V)) are linked to immune dysfunction and immunosuppression. However, the valence-dependent immunotoxicity mechanism of iAs has not been explored. In this work, we conducted a thorough investigation and comparison of lysosome dysfunction in As (III) and As (V) induced earthworm typical immune cells coelomocytes, and the binding reaction between As (III)/As (V) and immunoprotein lysozyme (LZM). Results indicated As (III) and As (V) induced severe alterations in NR uptake and caused serious damage to lysosomal membrane, particularly As (III). As (III) (21.24 %) had a stronger inhibitory effect on LZM activity in coelomocytes than As (V) (67.40 %), which showed a similar toxic trend as enzyme activity in vitro (As (III)-68.66 % and As (V)-78.50 %). LZM skeleton relaxation, secondary structural transformation, fluorescence sensitization and particle alteration provided evidence for As (III) trigger more grievous immunoprotein dysfunction. In conclusion, As (III) and As (V) triggered lysosomal membrane destruction in coelomocytes, as well as induced structural changes in LZM result in lysosomal hydrolase dysfunction in coelomocytes. Ultimately, cellular lysosome dysfunction and destruction, which leads to the normal immune system of the cells is disrupted. As (III) induced stronger immunosuppression through lysosome pathway than As (V). Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) and fluoride (F) affect gut health and potentially damage organs. The present study investigates the interplay between gut bacteria and oxidative stress (measured by MDA level, GSH level, catalase activity, Nrf2 translocation and expression) in zebrafish exposed to F (NaF 15 ppm) and As (As 2 O 3 50 ppb) alone or in combination. Combined exposure to As and F reduced gut bacterial alteration and imposed less oxidative stress compared to F- exposure alone. V3-V4 metagenomic sequencing revealed Pseudomonas, Aeromonas and Plesiomonas genera dominated in As or F treated groups while As+F treated group was enriched in beneficial Lactococcus and Streptococcus genera. Functional KEGG analysis demonstrated treatment-specific changes in bacterial metabolism, host organismal systems, human diseases, as well as cellular processes of microbial community were significantly affected. When Aeromonas sp. isolated from F-treated fish gut, tagged with GFP-vector and fed (~3.2 × 10 6 CFU/mL) to untreated fish, induced oxidative stress in gut and kidney. Gut bacteria were found to both increase and mitigate iAs or F-toxicity, whereas As+F treatment promoted a protective response. Correlation analysis between gut microbial community at genus level and oxidative stress parameters of gut and kidney, showed Aeromonas and Plesiomonas genera are strongly correlated with oxidative stress (r = 0.5-0.9, p˂0.05). Large variability in highly toxic inorganic arsenic (iAs) has previously been reported for the kelp Laminaria digitata. This study aimed to compare iAs concentrations in two morphologically similar kelps species (L. digitata and L. hyperborea). Both species contained similarly high total arsenic concentrations. However, whilst L. hyperborea contained only trace levels of iAs (0.363 ± 0.161 mg/kg), iAs constituted the majority of arsenic species in L. digitata (61.6 ± 18.7 mg/kg). Since the identification of iAs relies on retention time of the arsenic species, co-elution of any other organoarsenicals was checked by determination of arsenosugars using HPLC-ICPMS and ESI-HR-MS. Additionally, hydride generation ICP-MS gave comparable results to HPLC-ICPMS analyses. Substituting brown rice for white rice can increase the carcinogenic risk of inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure, given that brown rice has a higher iAs content than white rice. This study estimated changes in the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of iAs exposure from rice with increases in the proportion of brown to total rice consumption (PBT) in five regions around the world, including North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The results demonstrated that the magnitude of the increase in the ILCR of iAs exposure from rice expressed as an increase in PBT, ranged from 0.02 to 0.43 per 10,000 people for each 10 % increase in PBT. The highest increase was observed in Asia, followed by Latin America, North America, Oceania, and Europe. The daily rice consumption rate rather than the increase in iAs content is the critical factor responsible for regional differences in higher carcinogenic risk with increased PBT. Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a persistent bioaccumulation carcinogen that is most abundant in soils in the form of arsenite-As (III) and arsenate-As (V). However, there is currently very little explicit evidence about cytotoxicity of As on soil organisms. Moreover, toxicological data for iAs and proteotoxicity is shortage. The purpose of the present work is to elucidate the cytotoxicity mechanism of As (III) and As (V) to earthworms, a soil ecological sentinel species, and the molecular mechanisms by which As (III)/As (V) directly bind to antioxidative enzyme Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD). Results indicate that iAs triggered cell membrane injury and genotoxicity. As (V) (56.15 %) induced lower cell viability than As (III) (61.88 %). Higher ROS and lipid peroxidation level in As (V) support greater cytotoxicity. Differences in cellular uptake due to valence induced diverse levels of oxidative stress and cytotoxicity. At the molecular level, As (III) (129.33 %) induced higher Cu/Zn-SOD activity than As (V) (110.75 %). Changes in backbone, secondary structure, amino acid microenvironment and particle size of Cu/Zn-SOD further revealed the mechanisms of differential molecular toxicity of As (III) and As (V). Binding reactions with Cu/Zn-SOD explain differences in molecular toxicity. Collective research showed that iAs-induced oxidative stress and binding reactions determine the difference of SOD activity between As (III) and As (V) at the cellular level. Consumption of inorganic Arsenic (iAs) above the safe level may lead to many diseases including cancers of skin. It is known that carcinogenicity of iAs is mediated through generation of excessive reactive oxygen species and polyphenols present in black tea extract (BTE) ameliorate the deleterious effect. Epigenetics also plays vital roles in carcinogenesis. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of iAs on epigenetics and the modulatory effect of BTE.Male Swiss albino mice were divided into three groups, (i) control, (ii) iAs-administered and (iii) iAs + BTE administered. Group (ii) developed invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin after 330 days, while only hyperplasic and dysplastic changes were observed in group (iii). Expression levels of histone methylation, acetylation marks and several histone methylases, demethylases and acetylases due to iAs were studied; most aberrant expression levels due to iAs were modulated by BTE. JARID1B, a histone demethylase implicated as one of the markers in SCC and a therapeutic target gets upregulated by iAs, but is not influenced by BTE. However, SCC is prevented by BTE. Upregulation of JARID1B by iAs represses H3K4me3; BTE upregulates H3K4me3 without influencing JARID1B expression level. It is known that theaflavin compounds in BTE are transported to the nucleus and interact with histone proteins. in-silico findings in this paper hint that theaflavin compounds present in BTE are very good inhibitors of JARID1B and BTE inhibits its demethylating activity. BTE reverses the epigenetic alterations caused by iAs, thus aids in prevention of SCC.

Arsenic (As) is the most prolific contaminant in food, triggering arseniasis primarily via contaminated rice and drinking contaminated water. However, toxicological data for arsenite (As (III)) and arsenate (As (V)) on antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) at molecular level is shortage. The interaction mechanism of As (III) and As (V) with CAT was investigated using enzyme activity detection, multi-spectroscopic techniques, isothermal titration calorimetry and computational simulations. Results indicated As (III) and As (V) induced protein skeleton relaxation, secondary structure transformation, fluorescence sensitization and particle alteration of CAT, particularly As (III). Moreover, As (III)/As (V) bound to CAT through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic. As (III) and As (V) contacted with core residues His 74, Asn 147 and His A74, Trp A357, respectively, thereby inhibiting CAT activity. Overall, As (III) is more aggressive against the structure and physiological function of CAT than As (V). Here, we investigate the effects of acute and chronic exposure to arsenate (AsV) and arsenite (AsIII) in the marine medaka Oryzias melastigma. In vivo effects, biotransformation, and oxidative stress were studied in marine medaka exposed to the two inorganic arsenics for 4 or 28 days. An investigation of embryonic development revealed no effect on in vivo parameters, but the hatching rate increased in the group exposed to AsIII. Exposure to AsIII also caused the greatest accumulation of arsenic in medaka. For acute exposure, the ratio of AsV to AsIII was higher than that of chronic exposure, indicating that bioaccumulation of inorganic arsenic can induce oxidative stress. The largest increase in oxidative stress was observed following acute exposure to AsIII, but no significant degree of oxidative stress was induced by chronic exposure. During acute exposure to AsV, the increase in the enzymatic activity of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was twice as high compared with exposure to AsIII, suggesting that GST plays an important role in the initial detoxification process. In addition, an RNA-seq-based ingenuity pathway analysis revealed that acute exposure to AsIII may be related to cell-cycle progression. There are unique challenges in estimating dose-response with chemicals that are associated with multiple health outcomes and numerous studies. Some studies are more suitable than others for quantitative dose-response analyses. For such chemicals, an efficient method of screening studies and endpoints to identify suitable studies and potentially important health effects for dose-response modeling is valuable. Using inorganic arsenic as a test case, we developed a tiered approach that involves estimating study-specific margin of exposure (MOE)-like unitless ratios for two hypothetical scenarios. These study-specific unitless ratios are derived by dividing the exposure estimated to result in a 20% increase in relative risk over the background exposure (RRE20) by the background exposure, as estimated in two different ways. In our case study illustration, separate study-specific ratios are derived using estimates of United States population background exposure (RRB-US) and the mean study population reference group background exposure (RRB-SP). Systematic review methods were used to identify and evaluate epidemiologic studies, which were categorized based on study design (case-control, cohort, cross-sectional), various study quality criteria specific to dose-response analysis (number of dose groups, exposure ascertainment, exposure uncertainty), and availability of necessary dose-response data. Both case-control and cohort studies were included in the RRB analysis. The RRE20 estimates were derived by modeling effective counts of cases and controls estimated from study-reported adjusted odds ratios and relative risks. Using a broad (but not necessarily comprehensive) set of epidemiologic studies of multiple health outcomes selected for the purposes of illustrating the RRB approach, this test case analysis would suggest that diseases of the circulatory system, bladder cancer, and lung cancer may be arsenic health outcomes that warrant further analysis. This is suggested by the number of datasets from adequate dose-response studies demonstrating an effect with RRBs close to 1 (i.e., RRE20 values close to estimated background arsenic exposure levels).

This paper describes the use of multiple models and model averaging for considering dose–response uncertainties when extrapolating low-dose risk from studies of populations with high levels of exposure. The model averaging approach we applied builds upon innovative methods developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), principally through the relaxing of model constraints. The relaxing of model constraints allowed us to evaluate model uncertainty using a broader set of model forms and, within the context of model averaging, did not result in the extreme supralinearity that is the primary concern associated with the application of individual unconstrained models. A study of the relationship between inorganic arsenic exposure to a Taiwanese population and potential carcinogenic effects is used to illustrate the approach. We adjusted the reported number of cases from two published prospective cohort studies of bladder and lung cancer in a Taiwanese population to account for potential covariates and less-than-lifetime exposure (for estimating effects on lifetime cancer incidence), used bootstrap methods to estimate the uncertainty surrounding the µg/kg-day inorganic arsenic dose from drinking water and dietary intakes, and fit multiple models weighted by Bayesian Information Criterion to the adjusted incidence and dose data to generate dose-specific mean, 2.5th and 97.5th percentile risk estimates. Widely divergent results from adequate model fits for a broad set of constrained and unconstrained models applied individually and in a model averaging framework suggest that substantial model uncertainty exists in risk extrapolation from estimated doses in the Taiwanese studies to lower doses more relevant to countries like the U.S. that have proportionally lower arsenic intake levels.

Many “hot spot” geographic areas across the world with drinking water co-contaminated with inorganic arsenic (iAs) and fluoride (F-), two of the most common natural contaminants in drinking water. Both iAs and F- are known neurotoxins and affect neurodevelopment of children. However, very few studies have investigated the neurodevelopmental effects of concurrent exposure to iAs and F-, which could potentially pose a greater risk than iAs or F- exposure alone. Further, perturbations of gut microbiota, which plays a regulatory role in neurodevelopment, resulting from iAs and F- exposure has been reported in numerous studies. There is lacking of information regarding to the relationship among concurrent iAs and F- exposure, microbiome disruption, and neurodevelopmental impacts. To fill these gaps, we treated offspring rats to iAs (50 mg/L NaAsO2) and F- (100 mg/L NaF), alone or combined from early life (in utero and childhood) to puberty. We applied Morris water maze test to assess spatial learning and memory of these rats and generated gut microbiome profiles using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We showed that concurrent iAs and F- exposure caused more prominent neurodevelopmental effects in rats than either iAs or F- exposure alone. Moreover, Unsupervised Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) analysis of gut microbiome sequencing results separated concurrent exposure group from others, indicating a more sophisticated change of gut microbial communities occurred under the concurrent exposure condition. Further, a correlation analysis between indices of the water maze test and microbial composition at the genus level identified featured genera that were clearly associated with neurobehavioral performance of rats. 75% (9 out of 12) genera, which had a remarkable difference in relative abundance between the control and combined iAs and F- exposure groups, showed significantly strong correlations (r = 0.70–0.90) with the water maze performance indicators. Collectively, these results suggest that concurrent iAs and F- exposure led to more prominent effects on neurodevelopment and gut microbiome composition structures in rats, and the strong correlation between them indicates a high potential for the development of novel microbiome-based biomarkers of iAs and/or F- associated neurodevelopmental deficits.

The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of LAB strains in reducing the intestinal toxicity of arsenite [As(III)] and its tissue accumulation. For this purpose, Balb/c mice were randomly separated in four groups. One group received no treatment (control), one group received only As(III) (30 mg/L) via drinking water and the remaining two groups received As(III) via water and a daily dose of two LAB strains (Lactobacillus intestinalis LE1 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei BL23) by gavage during 2 months. The results show that both strains reduce the pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant response observed at the colonic level, partially restore the expression of the intercellular junction proteins (CLDN3 and OCLN) responsible for the maintenance of epithelial integrity, and increase the synthesis of the major mucin of the colonic mucus layer (MUC2), compared to animals treated with As(III) alone. Microbial metabolism of short-chain fatty acids also undergoes a recovery and the levels of fatty acids in the lumen reach values similar to those of untreated animals. All these positive effects imply the restoration of mucosal permeability, and a reduction of the marker of endotoxemia LPS binding protein (LBP). Treatment with the bacteria also has a direct impact on intestinal absorption, reducing the accumulation of As in the internal organs. The data suggest that the protective effect may be due to a reduced internalization of As(III) in intestinal tissues and to a possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the bacteria through activation of pathways such as Nrf2 and IL-10. Schwertmannite (SCH) is a promising material for adsorbing inorganic arsenic (As). We synthesized SCH nanoparticles (nano-SCH) via a modified chemical oxidation method and investigated the application of nano-SCH for the remediation of As-contaminated soils. The production of nano-SCH was successfully prepared using the persulfate oxidation method with carboxymethyl cellulose stabilization. The spherical structure of the nano-SCH particles had an average hydrodynamic diameter of 296 nm with high specific surface areas (108.9 m 2 /g). Compared with SCH synthesized via the H 2 O 2 oxidation method, the percentage of Fe 3+ precipitation in nano-SCH synthesis increased from 63.2% to 84.1%. The inorganic As adsorption capacity of nano-SCH improved by 2.27 times at solution pH = 6. After remediation of heavily As-contaminated soils by using 5% nano-SCH, the leachability of inorganic As rapidly decreased to 0.01% in 30 d. Correspondingly, the immobilization efficiencies of inorganic As in soil reached >99.9%. The inorganic As fractions in treated soil shifted from specifically and nonspecifically bound forms to amorphous and crystalline hydrous oxide-bound fractions. After treatment with 5% nano-SCH for 60 d, soil pH slightly decreased from 5.47 to 4.94; by contrast, soil organic matter content increased by 20.9%. Simultaneously, dehydrogenase concentration in soil decreased by 22.4%-34.7% during the remediation process. These changes in soil properties and As immobilization jointly decreased microbial activity and initiated the re-establishment of bacterial communities in the soil. Rice is one of the major cereal crops in the world, contributing significantly towards the dietary energy and nutrition of more than half of the world's population. However, rice can also be a significant exposure route for inorganic arsenic (iAs). This risk is even greater if rice is cooked with iAs-contaminated water. Here, we quantified the effect of two cooking methods, excess water (EW) and parboiled and absorbed (PBA), on As species and essential nutrient elements (P, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Se and Mo) in white, parboiled and brown rice cooked with As-safe (0.18 μg L -1 ) and As-spiked (10 and 50 μg L -1 ) tap water. Furthermore, we calculated the exposure risk using the margin of exposure (MOE) for both low (the UK) and high (Bangladesh) rice per capita consumption scenarios. The total micro and macronutrient content in cooked rice was measured using ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry). An LC-ICP-MS (liquid chromatography-ICP-MS) method was used to quantify arsenic species. The results demonstrate that EW and PBA methods produced similar efficacy of iAs removal (54-58 %) for white and brown rice. However, the EW method was better at removing iAs from parboiled rice (∼50 %) than PBA (∼39 %). We found that cooked brown rice was superior to other rice types in many essential nutrient elements, and cooking methods significantly affected the loss of K, Fe, Cu and Mo. For both cooking methods, cooking with iAs-spiked water significantly increased iAs in all rice types: white > parboiled > brown. However, when using As-spiked water, the PBA method retained more iAs than EW. Sanmen Bay plays a crucial role in economic shellfish aquaculture in China, yet few studies exist on the arsenic speciation of shellfish from this area. In this study, arsenic speciation of 11 cultured shellfish species from Sanmen Bay were analyzed by HPLC/ICP-MS. The results showed that organic arsenic particularly AsB, was the dominant arsenic species, constituting 21 %-71 % of the total arsenic. Conversely, the levels of inorganic arsenic were relatively low, ranging from 0.007 to 0.093 mg/kg, only accounted for 0.2 %-5.7 % of the total arsenic. There was no significant level correlation between inorganic arsenic and total arsenic in Sanmen Bay shellfish, so the concentration of inorganic arsenic did not increase with the total arsenic. Routine monitoring of inorganic arsenic in groundwater using sensitive, reliable, easy-to-use and affordable analytical methods is integral to identifying sources, and delivering appropriate remediation solutions, to the widespread global issue of arsenic pollution. Voltammetry has many advantages over other analytical techniques, but the low electroactivity of arsenic(V) requires the use of either reducing agents or relatively strong acidic conditions, which both complicate the analytical procedures, and require more complex material handling by skilled operators. Here, we present the voltammetric determination of total inorganic arsenic in conditions of near-neutral pH using a new commercially available 25 μm diameter gold microwire (called the Gold Wirebond), which is described here for the first time. The method is based on the addition of low concentrations of permanganate (10 μM MnO 4 ) which fulfils two roles: (1) to ensure that all inorganic arsenic is present as arsenate by chemically oxidising arsenite to arsenate and, (2) to provide a source of manganese allowing the sensitive detection of arsenate by anodic stripping voltammetry at a gold electrode. Tests were carried out in synthetic solutions of various pH (ranging from 4.7 to 9) in presence/absence of chloride. The best response was obtained in 0.25 M chloride-containing acetate buffer resulting in analytical parameters (limit of detection of 0.28 μg L - ) which fulfils two roles: (1) to ensure that all inorganic arsenic is present as arsenate by chemically oxidising arsenite to arsenate and, (2) to provide a source of manganese allowing the sensitive detection of arsenate by anodic stripping voltammetry at a gold electrode. Tests were carried out in synthetic solutions of various pH (ranging from 4.7 to 9) in presence/absence of chloride. The best response was obtained in 0.25 M chloride-containing acetate buffer resulting in analytical parameters (limit of detection of 0.28 μg L -1 for 10 s deposition time, linear range up to 20 μg L -1 and a sensitivity of 63.5 nA ppb -1 . s -1 ) better than those obtained in acidic conditions. We used this new method to measure arsenic concentrations in contrasting groundwaters: the reducing, arsenite-rich groundwaters of India (West Bengal and Bihar regions) and the oxidising, arsenate-rich groundwaters of Mexico (Guanajuato region). Very good agreement was obtained in all groundwaters with arsenic concentrations measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (slope = +1.029, R 2  = 0.99). Tropical Atlantic blooms of pelagic Sargassum spp. present major socioeconomic and ecological challenges for Caribbean and West African nations. Valorisation of sargassum provides an opportunity to ameliorate some of the damage to national economies; however, the active uptake of arsenic by pelagic sargassum creates significant barriers to its use. When defining valorisation pathways, it is important to understand arsenic speciation in pelagic sargassum, given the different levels of toxicity associated with different arsenic species. In this study, we assess the temporal variability of total arsenic and inorganic arsenic in pelagic sargassum arriving in Barbados; and test whether arsenic concentrations are linked to oceanic sub-origins. Mangrove forests, provide vital food resources and are an endangered ecosystem worldwide due to pollution and habitat destruction. A risk-benefit assessment (RBA) was performed on the red mangrove crab (Ucides occidentalis) from the threatened Guayas mangroves in Ecuador. It was aimed to assess the combined potential adverse and beneficial health impact associated with crab consumption and define a recommended safe intake (SI) to improve the diet of the Ecuadoran population while ensuring safe food intake. Target hazard quotients (THQs), benefit quotients (Qs), and benefit-risk quotients (BRQs) were calculated based on the concentrations of the analyzed contaminants (121 pesticide residues, 11 metal(loid)s, antimicrobial drugs from 3 classes) and nutrients (fatty acids, amino acids, and essential nutrients). Except for inorganic arsenic (iAs), the THQ was below 100 for all investigated contaminants, suggesting that the average crab consumer is exposed to levels that do not impose negative non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic health effects in the long and/or short term. Concentrations of iAs (average AsIII: 25.64 and AsV: 6.28 μg/kg fw) were of the highest concern because of the potential to cause negative health effects on long-term consumption. Despite the thriving aquaculture in the Guayas estuary, concentrations of residues of the antimicrobial drugs oxytetracycline (OTC), florfenicol, and nitrofurans still were low. Based on the fact that different risk reference values exist, related to different safety levels, four SI values (0.002, 0.04, 4, and 18 crabs/day) were obtained. The strictest intake values indicate a concern for current consumption habits. In conclusion, the red mangrove crab contains various important nutrients and can be part of a balanced diet for the Ecuadorian population when consumed in limited portions. Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic [As(III) and As(V)] affects about 200 million people, and is linked to a greater incidence of certain types of cancer. Drinking water is the main route of exposure, so, in endemic areas, the intestinal mucosa is constantly exposed to the metalloid. However, studies on the intestinal toxicity of inorganic As are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of a chronic exposure to As(III) on the intestinal mucosa and its associated microbiota. For this purpose, BALB/c mice were exposed during 6 months through drinking water to As(III) (15 and 30 mg/L). Treatment with As(III) increased reactive oxygen species (43-64%) and lipid peroxidation (8-51%). A pro-inflammatory response was also observed, evidenced by an increase in fecal lactoferrin (23-29%) and mucosal neutrophil infiltration. As(III) also induced an increase in the colonic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (24-201%) and the activation of some pro-inflammatory signaling pathways. Reductions in the number of goblet cells and mucus production were also observed. Moreover, As(III) exposure resulted in changes in gut microbial alpha diversity but no differences in beta diversity. This suggested that the abundance of some taxa was significantly affected by As(III), although the composition of the population did not show significant alterations. Analysis of differential taxa agreed with this, 21 ASVs were affected in abundance or variability, especially ASVs from the family Muribaculaceae. Intestinal microbiota metabolism was also affected, as reductions in fecal concentration of short-chain fatty acids were observed. The effects observed on different components of the intestinal barrier may be responsible of the increased permeability in As(III) treated mice, evidenced by an increase in fecal albumin (48-66%). Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk.) is a commonly planted vegetable in the Southeast Asia; it is a semi-aquatic leafy vegetable with high inorganic arsenic (As) accumulation capability and can be planted under both upland and flooding cultivation conditions. To date, a limited number of field studies have investigated the effect of soil management on As phytotoxicity and accumulation of water spinach. Therefore, in this study, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of water management and phosphate (P) application on the As phytotoxicity and accumulation of water spinach grown in As-contaminated fields (121 mg As kg -1 ). Water spinach was planted in the study field with two water management (flooding and upland cultivation) and two P application rates (90 and 180 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ), and continuously harvested three times. Results reveal that the concentration and estimated daily intake (EDI) of inorganic As in the edible parts of water spinach under flooding cultivation were approximately twofold higher than those under upland cultivation. It was also found that the accumulation of As in the shoot of water spinach was strongly related to the As concentrations, rather than P/As molar ratio in pore water due to that P application rates were lower than the maximum capacity for P retention of the tested soil. Moreover, the As phytotoxicity and accumulation of water spinach were reduced at the third harvest relative to the first two harvests because of the increase in iron plaque formation on the root surface and the decrease in the growing temperature during the experimental period. Our results suggest that upland cultivation is the better practice than flooding cultivation for reducing inorganic As accumulation in the edible parts of water spinach grown in As-contaminated soils. Organoarsenic contaminants existing in water body threat human health and ecological environment due to insufficient bifunctional treatment technologies for organoarsenic degradation and inorganic arsenic immobilization. In order to safely and efficiently treat organoarsenic contaminants discharged into the aquatic environment, Co-Mn-Fe layered double hydroxide (CoMnFe-LDH) and Co-Mn-Fe layered double oxide (CoMnFe-LDO) were fabricated and employed as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for organoarsenic degradation and inorganic arsenic immobilization, and p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) was selected as target pollutant. Results demonstrated that the satisfactory removal of p-ASA (100.0%) in both CoMnFe-LDH/PMS and CoMnFe-LDO/PMS systems was obtained within 30 min, and substantial inorganic arsenic adsorption could be achieved (below 0.5 mg/L) in two systems with converting major inorganic arsenic species to arsenate. As XPS, ESR and quenching experiment revealed, the existence and generation of surface-bound radicals in two systems were identified. Based on density functional theory calculation and XPS analysis, the catalytic mechanism of CoMnFe-LDO/PMS system that PMS could be activated via direct electron transfer from adsorbed p-ASA was clarified, which differed from PMS activation via coupling with surface hydroxyl groups in CoMnFe-LDH/PMS system. Catalytic performance assessment under various critical operation parameters indicated that CoMnFe-LDH presented more stable ability of p-ASA removal in a wide pH range and complex aquatic environment. The recycle experiment demonstrated the excellent stability and reusability of CoMnFe-LDH(LDO). Besides, seven degradation products of p-ASA in CoMnFe-LDH/PMS system including phenolic compounds, azophenylarsonic acid, nitrobenzene and benzoquinne were identified by UV-Vis spectra and LC-TOF-MS analysis, and the corresponding degradation pathway was proposed. Background: Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic results in many cancers in susceptible persons. The metabolism of inorganic arsenic and genomic susceptibility are thought to be associated with cancer occurrence., Methods: This study aims to examine the interaction of genomic susceptibility markers and urinary methylation capacity indicators involved in inorganic arsenic metabolism with all-cancer occurrence. This study conducted a follow-up on 96 residents to determine their urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites and genomic assay from an arseniasis area. Among them, 24 cancer developed. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine and estimate the candidate independent variables for cancer development., Results: The residents with high inorganic arsenic exposure, high primary methylation index (PMI; MMA/InAs) (but lower secondary methylation index (SMI)), and non-heterogeneity type of genomic markers, including GSTO1, AS3MT, and MPO, tend to develop cancers. Subjects with higher PMI are at higher risk of developing cancers (HR = 1.66; 95% CI = 1.30-2.12). Cancer occurrence was greater among the CC type of GSTO1 (HR = 3.33; 95% CI = 1.11-10.00), CC type of AS3MT (HR = 19.21; 95% CI = 1.16-318.80), and AA type of MPO (HR = 13.40; 95% CI = 1.26-142.40). After adjusting confounders, a mutually moderating effect was revealed between genomic markers and methylation capacity on cancer occurrence., Conclusions: This study found the hypermethylation responses to inorganic arsenic exposure and an array of genomic markers may increase the susceptibility of a wide range of organ cancers. In this study, total arsenic (As), inorganic arsenic (iAs), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), pesticides, and aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2) in Indian rice (Oryza sativa) and their dietary exposure risks for the general Saudi population were evaluated. A total of 483 samples were acquired from various ports and supermarkets throughout the country. Average elemental concentrations were found to be in the following order: As (0.1 ± 0.024)>iAs (0.038 ± 0.015)>Pb (0.023 ± 0.008)>Cd (0.019 ± 0.005)>Hg (0.002 ± 0.0004), and results did not exceed maximum residue limits (MRLs). Out of the 294 analyzed pesticides, 15 were detected in rice, of which six were fungicides, and nine were insecticides with a detection frequency of 22% and 26%, respectively. Eight of the detected pesticides were non-approved by the European Union (EU) commission, but their detection frequencies were low. Surprisingly, rice samples analyzed for aflatoxins were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Risk assessment coupled with Monte Carlo simulation based on the hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) approaches revealed that exposure to metal(loid)s and pesticides in rice were below levels that might pose a health risk., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk.) is a popular semi-aquatic vegetable with high arsenic (As) accumulation capability in tropical and subtropical areas, and it can grow under both flooding and upland conditions. Because only few studies addressed the dietary As risk of vegetable consumption, this study investigated the accumulation and speciation of As in the water spinach, and the human health risk of consuming this crop grown in different water managements. Pot experiments were conducted in two soils with different As levels under both flooded and upland conditions. The results showed that As concentrations, mainly inorganic As, in soil pore water and shoots under flooded conditions increased 2.05- to 5.11-fold and 1.30- to 2.55-fold respectively as compared with upland conditions. Even though Fe plaque formation on the root surface was higher under flooded conditions than under upland conditions, it still cannot act as an effective barrier to sequester As released from flooded soils into plant tissue. The dietary risk of consuming inorganic As through water spinach planted in flooded soils was higher than in upland soils, especially in high-As-level soils. The health risks associated with ingestion of arsenic (As) via consumption of rice are a global concern. This study investigated the effects of integrated biochar (BC)-water management approaches to As stress and to associated health risks in rice. Rice cultivars, Jayanthi and Ishikari, were grown, irrigated with As-containing water (1 mg L -1 ), under the following treatments: (1) birnessite-modified rice hull biochar (Mn-RBC)-flooded water management, (2) Mn-RBC-intermittent water management, (3) conventional flooded water management, and (4) intermittent water management. Rice yield in both rice varieties increased by 10%-34% under Mn-RBC-flooded and Mn-RBC-intermittent treatments compared to the conventional flooded treatment. In most cases, inorganic As concentration in rice roots, shoots, husks, and unpolished grains in both rice varieties was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered by 20%-81%, 6%-81%, 30%-75%, and 18%-44%, respectively, under Mn-RBC-flooded, Mn-RBC-intermittent, and intermittent treatments over flooded treatment. Co-exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) and fluoride (F - ) and their collective actions on cardiovascular systems have been recognized as a global public health concern. Emerging studies suggest an association between the perturbation of gut bacterial microbiota and adverse cardiovascular effects (CVEs), both of which are the consequence of iAs and F - exposure in human and experimental animals. The aim of this study was to fill the gap of understanding the relationship among co-exposure to iAs and F - , gut microbiota perturbation, and adverse CVEs. We systematically assessed cardiac morphology and functions (blood pressure, echocardiogram, and electrocardiogram), and generated gut microbiota profiles using 16S rRNA gene sequencing on rats exposed to iAs (50 mg/L NaAsO 2 ), F - (100 mg/L NaF) or combined iAs and F - (50 mg/L NaAsO 2  + 100 mg/L NaF), in utero and during early postnatal periods (postnatal day 90). Correlation analysis was then performed to examine relationship between significantly altered microbiota and cardiac performance indices. Our results showed that co-exposure to iAs and F - resulted in more prominent effects in CVEs and perturbation of gut microbiota profiles, compared to iAs or F - treatment alone. Furthermore, nine bacterial genera (Adlercreutzia, Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Coprococcus 3, Romboutsia, [Bacteroides] Pectinophilus group, Lachnospiraceae NC2004 group, Desulfovibrio, and two unidentified genera in Muribaculaceae and Ruminococcaceae family), which differed significantly in relative abundance between control and iAs and F - co-exposure group, were strongly correlated with the higher risk of CVEs (correlation coefficient = 0.70-0.88, p < 0.05). Roxarsone (ROX), as one of aromatic organoarsenic compounds (AOCs), is extensively used in livestock industry, which tends to transform into high-toxic inorganic arsenic in environments. Herein, a bifunctional Co 3 O 4 -Y 2 O 3 , possessing extremely excellent catalytic and adsorption performance due to the synergy of Co 3 O 4 and Y 2 O 3 , was designed and employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the elimination of ROX and the simultaneous in-situ adsorption of secondary inorganic arsenic, in which Co 3 O 4 acted as the primary catalyst, and Y 2 O 3 served as the main adsorbent. 50 μM (3.75 mg-As/L) of ROX was almost completely degraded, coupled with the conversion of As(III) to As(V) in the system of Co 3 O 4 -Y 2 O 3 (0.2 g/L) and PMS (0.5 mM) within 15 min at initial pH 7. Meanwhile, > 99.3% of the secondary As(V) would be removed within 120 min. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) were identified to be • OH, SO 4 •- , and 1 O 2 , which were responsible for the ROX degradation and the formation of As(V). Simultaneously, the produced As(V) were effectively adsorbed via the ligand/anion exchange with surface -OH and CO 3 2- anions of Co 3 O 4 . The possible degradation pathways of ROX were further proposed on the basis of the intermediates identification. Our findings may provide an insight into the degradation of AOCs and the simultaneous removal of secondary inorganic arsenic via the PMS activation with Co 2 O 3 . Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a group 1 carcinogen, and consumption of rice can be a significant pathway of iAs exposure in the food chain. Although there are regulations in place to control iAs for marketed rice in some countries, additional measures are explored to remove arsenic from rice. Due to the surface-bound and soluble nature of iAs, previous studies have shown that it can be removed to a significant extent using different cooking methods. Towards this goal we modified and tested the absorption method in combination with four home-friendly cooking treatments (UA = unwashed and absorbed, WA = washed and absorbed, PSA = pre-soaked and absorbed, and PBA = parboiled and absorbed) using both brown and white rice (3 types each). The nutrient elements were measured using ICP-MS and arsenic speciation was carried out using LC-ICP-MS. Overall, our results show that PBA was the optimum approach assessed, removing 54% and 73% of inorganic arsenic (iAs) for brown and white rice respectively, raising the margin of exposure (MOE) by 3.7 for white rice and 2.2 times for brown rice, thus allowing the consumption of rice more safely for infants, children and adults. Other cooking treatments were effective in reducing the iAs concentration from white rice only. Here we also report changes in selected nutrient elements (P, K, Mg, Zn and Mn) which are relatively abundant in rice. In general, the treatments retained more nutrients in brown rice than white rice. No significant loss of Zn was observed from both rice types and the loss of other nutrients was similar or less than in comparison to reported losses from rice cooked in excess water in the literature. Arsenic is the most toxic element for humans. Presenting naturally in aquatic ecosystems and due to anthropogenic action, this semi-metal transfers to shellfish through the food chain. This systematic review aims to explain the dynamic of arsenic in the marine aquatic system, investigating factors that affect its bioaccumulation. A total of 64 articles were considered from three databases. The key abiotic factor influencing the presence of arsenic in shellfish is anthropogenic contamination, followed by geographic location. The crucial biotic factor is the genetics of each species of shellfish, including their diet habits, habitat close to the sediment, metabolic abilities, physiological activities of organisms, and metal levels in their habitats and food. Finally, arsenic presents an affinity for specific tissues in shellfish. This study combines ultrasound-assisted extraction and vortex-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction using an ionic imprinted polymer as a selective sorbent for rapid isolation and pre-concentration of inorganic arsenic species (As(III) and As(V)) in extracts from rice samples prior to their determination by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. All factors affecting the ultrasound assisted extraction of the species from rice (ultrasound amplitude, sonication time and sonication mode) and their selective pre-concentration by ionic imprinted polymer-based vortex-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (sorbent amount, extract pH, vortex extraction time and speed, eluting solution and vortex elution time and speed) were optimized. The analytical performance of the procedure was studied at optimum conditions: ultrasound continuous sonication at 40% amplitude for 2.0 min using 1:1 methanol/ultrapure as an extractant, 50 mg of sorbent, extract pH at 8.0, vortex loading at 1000 rpm for 1.0 min, and elution with ultrapure water by vortexing at 1000 rpm for 1.0 min, pre-concentration procedure which leads to a pre-concentration factor of 10. The limits of detection obtained for As (III) and As (V) were 0.20 and 0.41 μg kg -1 , respectively, and were well below the maximum levels established by the European Union in rice and rice containing products. The method was found to be precise (intraday and interday relative standard deviations ≤ 11%) and selective. Adverse health outcomes, including death from cardiovascular disease (CVD), arising from chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) are well documented. Consumption of rice is a major iAs exposure route for over 3 billion people, however, there is still a lack of epidemiological evidence demonstrating the association between iAs exposure from rice intake and CVD risks. We explored this potential association through an ecological study using data at local authority level across England and Wales. Local authority level daily per capita iAs exposure from rice (E-iAs ing,rice ) was estimated using ethnicity as a proxy for class of rice consumption. A series of linear and non-linear models were applied to estimate the association between E-iAs ing,rice and CVD age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), using Akaike's Information Criterion as the principle model selection criterion. When adjusted for significant confounders, notably smoking prevalence, education level, employment rate, overweight percentage, PM2.5, female percentage and medical and care establishments, the preferred non-linear model indicated that CVD risks increased with iAs exposure from rice at exposures above 0.3 μg/person/day. Also, the best-fitted linear model indicated that CVD ASMR in the highest quartile of iAs exposure (0.375-2.71 μg/person/day) was 1.06 (1.02, 1.11; p-trend <0.001) times higher than that in the lowest quartile (<0.265 μg/person/day). para-arsanilic acid (p-ASA), as a major phenylarsonic feed additive, was used annually in many countries. Once it enters the water environment, p-ASA would be transformed into hypertoxic inorganic arsenic species, causing severe arsenic pollution. In this study, magnetic copper ferrite (CuFe 2 O 4 ) was applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for p-ASA removal and synchronous control of the released inorganic arsenic species. Results showed that CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS system presented favorable oxidation ability and close to 85% of 10 mg/L p-ASA was eliminated under the condition of simultaneous dosing 0.2 g/L CuFe 2 O 4 and 1 mM PMS. The rapid decomposition of p-ASA resulted from homogeneous PMS oxidation and the attack of reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO 4 - ), which was involved the heterogeneous PMS activation through the cycles between Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Cu(II)/Cu(I). Meanwhile, the released inorganic arsenic species during p-ASA degradation were found to be controllable via the adsorption on CuFe 2 - ), which was involved the heterogeneous PMS activation through the cycles between Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Cu(II)/Cu(I).
