Background: A quality diet and an active lifestyle are both important cornerstones of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. However, despite their interlinked effects on metabolic health, the 2 behaviors are rarely considered jointly, particularly within the context of CVD prevention. We examined the independent, interactive, and joint associations of diet and physical activity with CVD hospitalization, CVD mortality, and all-cause mortality. Methods: CVD-free Australian participants aged 45–74 years (n = 85,545) reported physical activity, diet, sociodemographic, and lifestyle characteristics at baseline (2006–2009) and follow-up (2012–2015), and data were linked to hospitalization and death registries (03/31/2019 for CVD hospitalization and all-cause mortality and 12/08/2017 for CVD mortality). Diet quality was categorized as low, medium, and high based on meeting dietary recommendations. Physical activity was operationalized as (a) total moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) as per guidelines, and (b) the composition of MVPA as the ratio of vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA) to total MVPA. We used a left-truncated cause-specific Cox proportional hazards model using time-varying covariates. Results: During a median of 10.7 years of follow-up, 6576 participants were admitted to the hospital for CVD and 6581 died from all causes (876 from CVD during 9.3 years). A high-quality diet was associated with a 17% lower risk of all-cause mortality than a low-quality diet, and the highest MVPA category (compared with the lowest) was associated with a 44% and 48% lower risk of CVD and all-cause mortality, respectively. Multiplicative interactions between diet and physical activity were non-significant. For all outcomes, the lowest risk combinations involved a high-quality diet and the highest MVPA categories. Accounting for total MVPA, some VPA was associated with further risk reduction of CVD hospitalization and all-cause mortality. Conclusion: For CVD prevention and longevity, one should adhere to both a healthy diet and an active lifestyle and incorporate some VPA when possible.

SUMMARY: Purpose: The study was conducted to develop a customized diet education program using mobile instant messenger for people undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Our goal was to examine the program's effects on diet-related self-efficacy, dietary self-care compliance, and physiological indices (hemoglobin, albumin, potassium, and phosphorus). Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pre-post-test design. We applied the Cox interaction model of client health behaviors. Overall, 43 patients (21 in the experimental group and 22 in the control group) attending the renal clinic and undergoing PD at three hospitals were included. The experimental group underwent a customized diet education program using a mobile instant messenger for five weeks. Patients in the control group received routine care. This study was conducted in the following order: pre-test, treatment, post-test 1 (immediately after), and post-test 2 (four weeks after). Summary: Introduction: Research has shown that the Covid-19 pandemic may have had negative effects on lifestyle factors of people in the UK, however research is limited in terms of the impact on people living with neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's (PD) and spinal cord injury (SCI). This study explores the impact that the pandemic had on mental health and lifestyle factors such as dietary habits, supplement use and exercise in those with MS, PD and SCI. Methods: A cross-sectional, online, questionnaire study was carried out on a cohort of 134 people in the United Kingdom during the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants completed the questionnaire between June 2021–February 2022. Eligibility criteria included being over the age of 18 years, and declaring having been formally diagnosed with either MS (n=27, female=81%), PD (n=84, female=35%), SCI (n=23, female=61%). Results: 33% of participants reported an increased consumption of alcohol and 29% a decreased consumption of fruit and vegetables. However, 64% of participants reported no change in diet (p < 0.001). Vitamin D, multivitamin/minerals, probiotic and fish oil were the most commonly consumed supplements by participants. Although intake of any supplement was not significantly impacted by Covid-19 for the total cohort, by condition, and by sex, a generalised linear mixed model indicated SCI participants consumed more supplement types during Covid-19 than before (OR:1.98; 95% CI [1.04, 3.77]). Additionally, 29% of participants reported they contacted their families less than pre-pandemic (p=0.001), and 60% reported they experienced more fatigue since the pandemic. Open-ended questions added quality context to the categorical data. Conclusion: This study suggests that the impact Covid-19 has had on people with neurological conditions is complex and individual, yet the negative effects may be more pronounced than the general public. Overall, there were changes in lifestyle behaviours, some which may be detrimental to health and life quality in these already vulnerable groups. Therefore, these changes need to be considered in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Background: Using cell lines to explore the function of organic compounds is fundamental in biotechnology. Evaluating new additives intended to improve animal production is challenging due to the complexity and uncertainty of in vivo testing. This study investigated the action of a compound with antioxidant properties using cells from terrestrial (LMH cells line) and aquatic vertebrates (CHSE-214). Results: The results of our study provide reassuring evidence of the compound’s safety for use in animal production. The compound demonstrated no adverse effects on cell viability, indicating its potential for safe application. Furthermore, the compound’s antioxidant properties were evident, with a 100% recovery in both cell lines when exposed to hydrogen peroxide 0.1 mM. It also effectively reduced cellular ageing caused by metabolic processes, as measured by the TBARS formation in both cell lines, from 5 MDA µM/mg protein to 2.5 MDA µM/mg protein when used at 0.05 or 0.5 g/L. Notably, this action did not increase cell membrane oxidation, further supporting its safety profile. Conclusions: These findings indicate that the compound has an antioxidant effect and can be used independently or in combination with metabolic stimulants in the diets of production animals. Applying this additive and its possible synergy with other compounds could help reduce oxidative stress and improve growth in animal production. Background and aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disease associated with hypercholesterolemia, and dietary treatment is part of the treatment. We aimed to assess the dietary pattern in relation to the Healthy Nordic Food Index (HNFI) in adults with and without heterozygous FH (HeFH), and to examine the associations between dietary quality and biomarkers related to cardiovascular disease in adults with HeFH. Methods: We included 205 adults (≥18 years) with HeFH who received follow-up at the Lipid Clinic in Oslo and compared them to controls (n = 228). Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and dietary quality was assessed using the HNFI. Blood samples were analysed for levels of blood lipids, plasma fatty acids (FAs), and markers of inflammation and platelet activation. Summary: Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated central nervous system disorder, often accompanied by fatigue, which can be an initial symptom. Cocoa, rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, has previously reduced fatigue in chronic fatigue syndrome patients. This study aimed to assess cocoa's impact on fatigue in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Methods: This study was a double-blind, parallel placebo-controlled trial in patients with RRMS. A total number of 60 patients entered the study and were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group consumed 25 grams of cocoa daily, split into two 12.5-gram sachets, while the placebo group received 2.5 grams daily. Modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS) and Fatigue severity scale (FSS) questionnaires were filled at baseline, week 4, and week 8. Results: No significant changes were observed in FSS (P = 0.90) and MFIS (P = 0.37) during the interventions. No significant differences were observed in the questionnaire score changes between the two groups, except for the FSS decrease in the second four weeks (P < 0.05). FSS and MFIS were significantly correlated during different assessment times (P < 0.05). Both MFIS and FSS scores were correlated with Beck's depression inventory score. Conclusions: We indicated that FSS changed significantly after cocoa consumption in patients with RRMS. The FSS score of the cocoa group continued to decrease during the subsequent four weeks, unlike the placebo group. It appears that cocoa primarily affects physical fatigue rather than psychosocial or cognitive fatigue. While these results align with some prior studies, further research on larger populations is necessary to confirm these findings.

Background: Collegiate student-athletes have unique nutritional requirements to support their athletic performance and health. Few studies have comprehensively characterized the diets of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes. Objectives: To characterize dietary intake and diet quality during a competitive season in female and male NCAA Division I cross country student-athletes from a single university. Methods: Females and males (n = 14/sex) from the Florida State University cross country teams completed 9-d of food records across their competitive season. Nutrient intakes were compared to the Dietary Reference Intakes for the United States population [e.g., Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs)] and athlete-specific guidelines. Diet quality was assessed according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) using the 2020 Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2020). Total daily energy expenditure was estimated from training records. Results: Carbohydrate intakes were below athlete guidelines in 43% of females (mean ± SD, 5.67 ± 1.16 g·kg–1·d–1) and 29% of males (4.95 ± 1.05, P sex = 0.096). All participants met or exceeded athlete recommendations for protein (2.09 ± 0.425 g·kg–1·d–1, 1.92 ± 0.519, P sex = 0.36) and fat (32.8 ± 5.1% kcal, 34.4 ± 3.4%, P sex = 0.36). No participants met the RDA for vitamin D (5.14 ± 1.78 μg/d, 4.91 ± 3.24, P sex = 0.83). Only 79% of females and 36% of males met the RDA for calcium (1220 ± 307 mg/d, 1010 ± 296, P sex = 0.83). Most females (n = 13) and males (n = 11) consumed iron supplements where total intakes exceeded the tolerable upper intake level (110 ± 60.1 mg/d, 66.8 ± 36.3, P sex = 0.029). HEI-2020 indicated poor adherence to the DGAs, with better diet quality in females (65.3 ± 13.7) than males (50.6 ± 10.1, P sex = 0.0034). Participants failed to meet guidelines for all HEI-2020 food group components except total protein foods. Total daily energy expenditure was greater in males and declined across the competitive season (P sex < 0.0001, P time < 0.0001, P sex∗time = 0.25). Conclusions: NCAA Division I cross country student-athletes consumed inadequate carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamin D but met or exceeded intake guidelines for protein, fat, and iron. Diet quality was poor; HEI-2020 component scores may indicate food groups to target to improve diet quality and intake of nutrients important to runners.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04079322.

Summary: Background: It is unknown whether the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) intake and type 2 diabetes mellitus differs from other degrees of food processing. We examined the association between degree of food processing and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This was a prospective cohort analysis of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Dietary intake was assessed at baseline using dietary questionnaires and classified according to the Nova classification into unprocessed/minimally processed food (MPF), processed culinary ingredients (PCI), processed food (PF) and UPF. Type 2 diabetes mellitus cases were verified through multiple methods. Cox regression and statistical substitution analysis was used to estimate associations between MPF + PCI, PF and UPF intake and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. To investigate heterogeneity in the association between UPF and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus, UPF sub-group analysis was conducted. Different reference groups were used in each analysis. Findings: Over an average 10.9 years follow-up of 311,892 individuals, 14,236 type 2 diabetes mellitus cases were identified. Each 10% increment of total daily food intake from UPF (%g/day) was associated with 17% (95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.14–1.19) higher incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. Each 10% increment in MPF + PCI or PF intake was associated with lower incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (MPF + PCI hazard ratio: 0.94 (95%CI: 0.92–0.96); PF hazard ratio: 0.92 (95%CI: 0.89–0.95)). Replacing UPF with MPF + PCI or PF was associated with lower incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, heterogeneity was observed across UPF sub-groups, with breads, biscuits and breakfast cereals, sweets and desserts, and plant-based alternatives associated with lower incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. Interpretation: These findings support recommendations to focus on reducing intake of specific UPF for lowering type 2 diabetes mellitus risk. Funding: International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a widespread non-communicable disease in India that significantly affects the healthcare system owing to its acute and chronic complications. The traditional approach to diabetes care has focused on medical professionals, but recent research has indicated that self-care among patients is crucial. Effective self-care practices can enhance the quality of life of T2DM patients. This study aimed to evaluate self-care practices among T2DM patients at a sub-district hospital in Gujarat State, India. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 93 T2DM patients. Self-care activities were assessed using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) scale. Descriptive statistics and comparative analyses were performed. Results: The majority of the participants were male (55.9 %) and over 60 years of age (67.7 %). Participants demonstrated high adherence to medication regimens (mean score = 6.66 ± 0.86). However, adherence to other self-care practices was significantly lower; only 11.8 % reported good dietary behavior, 55.91 % engaged in regular exercise, and 50.5 % performed regular foot care. While 83.8 % reported good monitoring behavior, this contradicts the low adherence to blood glucose testing (mean score = 0.38 ± 0.59). Participants aged

Objectives: Our study evaluated the independent and overall associations of vegetable and fruit consumption at midlife with the likelihood of physical frailty in later life. We also investigated whether specific nutrients in these foods could have accounted for these associations, if present. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: A population-based cohort of Chinese adults followed over a period of 20 years in Singapore. Participants: We used data from 11,959 subjects who participated in the baseline (1993–1998) and follow-up 3 (2014–2017) interviews of the Singapore Chinese Health Study. Measurements: At baseline, dietary intake was evaluated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. During the follow-up 3 visits, physical frailty was assessed using a modified Cardiovascular Health Study phenotype that included weakness, slowness, exhaustion and weight loss. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations with physical frailty. Results: Participants had mean ages of 52 years at baseline, and 72 years at follow-up 3. Baseline intake of vegetables, but not of fruits, showed a dose-dependent inverse relationship with physical frailty at follow-up 3 (Ptrend = 0.001). Compared to participants in the lowest quintile of vegetable intake, those in the highest quintile had reduced odds of frailty [OR (95% CI): 0.73 (0.60−0.89)]. Among the components of physical frailty, vegetable intake had the strongest inverse association with weakness defined by handgrip strength [OR (95% CI) between extreme quintiles: 0.62 (0.52−0.73); Ptrend < 0.001]. In models that were individually adjusted for nutrients, the vegetable-frailty association was attenuated and no longer statistically significant after adjusting for the intake of β-carotene, lutein, folate, α-carotene, and isothiocyanates. Conclusion: : Increased midlife intake of vegetables was associated with reduced odds of physical frailty in later life, and the intake of β-carotene, lutein, folate, α-carotene, and isothiocyanates could have accounted for this association.

Objective: Exposure to 60% high fat diet (HFD) leads to a robust consummatory preference over well-balanced chow standard diet (SD) when mice are presented with a choice. This passive HFD-induced SD devaluation following HFD challenge and withdrawal is highlighted by the significant reduction in SD food intake even in states of caloric deprivation. The elements of HFD that lead to this SD depreciation remains unclear. Possibly important factors include the amount and type of fat contained in a diet as well as past eating experiences dependent on sensory properties including taste and post ingestive feedback. We aimed to explore the role of these components to HFD-induced SD devaluation. Methods: Wildtype mice were longitudinally presented discrete HFDs in conjunction with SD and feeding and metabolic parameters were analyzed. A separate cohort of animals were assessed for acute HFD preference in 3 conditions: 1) ad libitum fed (sated), 2) overnight fasted (physiologically hungry), and 3) ad libitum fed (artificially hungry), elicited through chemogenetic Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neuron activation. Population dynamics of AgRP neurons were recorded to distinct inaccessible and accessible diets both before and after consummatory experience. Transient receptor potential channel type M5 (TRPM5) knockout mice were used to investigate the role of fat taste perception and preference to HFD-induced SD devaluation. The clinically approved lipase inhibitor orlistat was used to test the contribution of fat absorption to HFD-induced SD devaluation. Results: HFD-induced SD devaluation is dependent on fat content, composition, and preference. This effect scaled both in strength and latency with higher percentages of animal fat. 60% HFD was preferred and almost exclusively consumed in preference to other diets across hours and days, but this was not as evident upon initial introduction over seconds and minutes, suggesting ingestive experience is critical. Optical fiber photometry recordings of AgRP activity supported this notion as neuronal suppression by the different diets was contingent on prior intake. While taste transduced via TRPM5 influenced HFD-evoked weight gain, it failed to impact either HFD preference or HFD-induced SD devaluation. Perturbation of post ingestive feedback through orlistat-mediated diminishment of fat absorption prevented HFD-evoked weight gain and abolished HFD-induced SD devaluation. Conclusions: Post ingestive feedback via fat digestion is vital for expression of HFD-induced SD devaluation.

Understory plantation of cardamom (genus Amomum) is an ancient and widespread agroforestry practice in the eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia, an area that supports high regional biodiversity. Cardamom provides an important cash income to rural people, and governments encourage cardamom cultivation as a replacement for slash-and-burn agriculture to alleviate poverty, aligning with the principles of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) program initiated by the FAO. This program recognizes and supports traditional agricultural practices that contributes to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. In this context, cardamom agroforestry not only supports local economies but also provides crucial habitat for animals, including the newly described skywalker hoolock gibbon (Hoolock tianxing). Nearly half of the remnant population of the skywalker hoolock gibbon lives in cardamom agroforest. In order to evaluate if gibbons could survive in cardamom agroforest for a relatively long term, we compared foraging behavior of gibbons over a year living in cardamom agroforests (group NA) and well-preserved forests (group BB) in Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan, China. In response to habitat degradation caused by cardamom plantation, group NA increased feeding time and spent more time feeding on leaves. Notably, they consumed nuts of Castanopsis hystrix which is an unusual food type for gibbons. On the contrary, members of group BB rarely ate nuts though Castanopsis hystrix is abundant within its home range. However, group NA did not occupy a large home range, or travel longer in time or distance than group BB. We also monitored female reproduction of five groups for 5–13 years. Two adult females living in agroforests successfully reared two or three offspring with an inter-birth interval of five years. In addition, we surveyed group size of 16 groups (9 in agroforest vs. 7 in well preserved forests) from 2017 to 2023, and we found no significant difference in group size between habitats. Our results suggested that cardamom agroforest can sustain skywalker hoolock gibbons provided it is not too fragmented and hunting is prohibited.

The analysis of mechanisms underlying prey use and selection is crucial for understanding the potential for apex predators to shape ecological processes across trophic levels. Significant implications for the conservation and management of ecosystems can ensue, especially in human-modified landscapes characterised by the recent recovery of apex predators, such as those of Europe. Generalist predators may show frequency-dependent prey selection, leading to prey switching; however, there is no ubiquitous support for positive relationships between prey abundance and prey selection. In a protected area recently recolonised by the wolf Canis lupus and hosting abundant wild prey (>20 individuals/km2), we assessed prey use and selection (>3000 wolf scats analysed) throughout 7 years since wolf settlement (April 2016-to-March 2023), during which prey density was relatively stable. Wolf diet was dominated by wild boar Sus scrofa and fallow deer Dama dama (>70 % of occurrences and volume); the roe deer Capreolus capreolus and coypu Myocastor coypus represented main secondary prey. The wolf showed a clear prey switching throughout the study. In the first two years, the fallow deer was the main prey and was positively selected. Then, wild boar replaced fallow deer as main prey, and was positively selected, with a progressive decrease in the use of fallow deer throughout the years. Selection indices of wild boar were negatively associated with those of fallow deer. The relationship between selection indices and population density was inconsistent across species, being negative for the wild boar and weakly positive for the fallow deer, although the latter showed no sharp decline in the area. Concurrent studies showed increased diurnal activity of fallow deer and a consequent reduced temporal overlap with the wolf throughout years since the settlement of this predator, suggesting temporal avoidance. By supporting a minor role of prey density in mediating prey switching, our results suggest a major role of other factors (e.g., antipredator behavioural responses). Alternative substantial prey are important to buffer apex predators not only towards changes in the abundance of main prey, but also towards the effects of other factors potentially reducing prey detectability, e.g., antipredator behaviour.

Summary: Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common monogenic disease characterized by the formation of fluid-filled renal cysts, loss of mitochondrial function, decreased fatty acid oxidation, increased glycolysis, and likely renal failure. We previously demonstrated that inducing a state of ketosis ameliorates or reverses PKD progression in multiple animal models. In this study, we compare time-restricted feeding and 48-h periodic fasting regimens in both juvenile and adult Cy/+ rats. Both fasting regimens potently prevent juvenile disease progression and partially reverse PKD in adults. To explore the mechanism of fasting, we administered β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) to Cy/+ rats and orthologous mouse models of PKD (Pkd1RC/RC, Pkd1-Ksp:Cre). BHB recapitulated the effects of fasting in these models independent of stereoisomer, suggesting the effects of BHB are largely due to its signaling functions. These findings implicate the use of ketogenic metabolic therapy and BHB supplementation as potential disease modifiers of PKD and point toward underlying mechanisms.

The worldwide surge in obesity and associated metabolic disorders is emerging as a significant public health issue for societies and healthcare systems. Available evidence has shown that alterations in the gut microbiota could be implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity and associated disorders. A healthy gut microbiome is characterized by richness and high microbial diversity. Gut microbiota affect how the host responds to diet, and conversely, the host may modify the gut microbiota through changes in dietary habits. Diet can impact and alter the composition, diversity, and species richness of the gut microbiota over time. An unhealthy diet, high in fat and sugar, may lead to decreased microbial diversity, reduced synthesis of metabolites that maintain gut permeability, damage to the mucus layer, increased bacterial translocation and lipopolyssacharide which can trigger endotoxemia, chronic subclinical inflammation and metabolic disorders. Currently, the impact of diet on gut microbial composition and its involvement in the pathogenic mechanisms underlying metabolic disorders is one of the most promising areas of research in nutrition. This special issue has gathered original research articles in topics related to diet patterns, gut microbiota, obesity and associated metabolic disorders as well as brief reports, reviews and perspectives in the wider field of translational and clinical metabolic research. In particular, the aim of this Special Issue was to present evidence connecting gut microbiota with metabolic disorders, explore the underlying mechanisms of this association, and examine how diet patterns may influence this relationship.

To compare health outcomes between dogs fed meat and vegan diets, we surveyed 2,536 dog guardians who provided data and opinions about dogs fed conventional meat (1,370 = 54 %), raw meat (830 = 33 %) or vegan (336 = 13 %) diets for at least one year. We examined seven general indicators of illness: increased numbers of veterinary visits, medication use, progression onto a therapeutic diet after initial maintenance on a vegan or meat-based diet, reported veterinary assessment of being unwell, reported veterinary assessment and guardian opinion of increased illness severity, and number of health disorders per unwell dog. We also considered the prevalence of 22 specific health disorders, based on reported veterinary assessments. In each dietary group the proportions of dogs considered to have suffered from health disorders were: conventional meat – 49 %, raw meat – 43 % and vegan – 36 %. Probabilities of suffering from a disorder respectively appeared highest in dogs fed conventional meat for 11 disorders, raw meat for eight disorders, and vegan diets for three disorders. We conducted regression analyses to control for differences in medically-relevant canine demographic variables, including age, sex, neutering status, breed size and unusually high exercise levels. Dogs fed vegan diets had the best health outcomes. This trend was clear and consistent, with dogs fed vegan diets usually having substantial and statistically significant decreases in risks of these seven general indicators of illness. These ranged from 14.4 % to 51.3 % compared to dogs fed conventional meat-based diets. For six specific disorders, vegan diets were associated with statistically significant risk reductions of 50 %–61 % compared to dogs fed conventional meat. After pooling our results with related studies published to date, vegan dog food was consistently associated with lowered risks of multiple specific health disorders. No health disorder was consistently more prevalent in dogs fed vegan diets.

Objectives: Moderate daily mocha pot coffee intake has been associated with better mood and cognition in patients with mild vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Similarly, moderate red wine consumption has shown protective effects on cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. The aim of this study was to explore the synergistic relation between red wine and coffee intake on mood and cognitive status in mild VCI patients at risk for dementia. Methods: A total of 300 non-demented older patients with mild VCI were asked for coffee and red wine consumption and administered with the 17-items Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Stroop Color-Word Interference Test (Stroop T), as well as the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and the Instrumental ADL to measure their mood status, cognitive performance, and functional independence. Linear regression models were used to test the association between variables. Results: Moderate wine drinkers tended to show the best Stroop T score at any level of coffee consumption; conversely, heavy wine consumers performed worse at the Stroop T, especially in patients reporting high coffee intake. Moderate drinkers of both coffee and wine showed the lowest HDRS scores. Finally, a progressive increase in MMSE score was evident with increasing coffee consumption, which peaks when combined with a moderate wine consumption. Conclusions: Daily mocha pot coffee and red wine intake seem to be synergistically associated with global cognition, executive functioning, and mood status in patients with mild VCI; the association was not linear, resulting in a protective direction for moderate intake and detrimental for heavy consumption. Future studies are needed to further corroborate the present findings and the potential long-term protective effects of these dietary compounds over time.

Food provides essential nutrients and energy for wildlife and directly influences the compositional patterns of the gut microbiota in natural reservoirs. Little is known about the interspecific differences and correlations between diet and microbial communities in sympatric herbivores. We conducted chloroplast trnL and 16S rRNA genes amplicon sequencing of 90 faecal samples from sika deer (Cervus nippon kopschi), Reeve’s muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), and a Chinese hare (Lepus sinensis). Diet analysis revealed that sika deer predominantly foraged on Rubus (36.5 %), Loropetalum (25.5 %), and Eurya (13.4 %) at the genus level; Reeve’s muntjac favoured Rubus (51.8 %), Eurya (11.0 %), and Euonymus (6.1 %); Chinese hare showed dominance in Rubus (15.8 %), Smilax (15.6 %), and Rhus (10.6 %) consumption, with all these forage plants being shrubs. The gut microbiota of the three herbivores was characterised by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria, although the relative abundances of these taxa differed across herbivore species. Alpha diversity indicated no significant differences between sika deer and Reeve’s muntjac, whereas alpha indices showed significant differences between sika deer and Chinese hare (p < 0.05). Beta diversity analysis indicated significant differences between the Chinese hare and sika deer, as well as between the Chinese hare and Reeve’s muntjac (p < 0.05), with no significant difference found between the two cervid species, which may be attributed to the influence of interspecific genetics and evolutionary factors. Due to seasonal shifts, the food availability for herbivores decreased, resulting in the convergent adaptation of shrubs consumed by the three species. Furthermore, PICRUSt functional profile prediction indicated that the gut microbiota of the three species were mainly enriched in metabolic functions. Mantel correlation analysis suggested that the gut microbiota of sika deer showed a significant positive correlation with five genera of plants, one genus of Reeve’s muntjacs, and three genera of Chinese hare (p < 0.01), suggesting that the gut microbiota of sika deer may be more susceptible to changes in food abundance. Our study emphasises how the winter climate affects the foraging strategies and microbial communities of the three herbivores, as well as their correlations. These results may further contribute to the food selection, regulation of gut microbiota, disease prevention, conservation, and management of sika deer and other sympatric herbivores.

Objective: Obesity is a leading risk factor for both the incidence and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Omic technologies, including transcriptomics and metabolomics are capable of identifying RNA and metabolite profiles in tissues and biofluids of OA patients. The objective of this review is to highlight studies using transcriptomics and metabolomics that contribute to our understanding of OA pathology in relation to obesity. Design: We conducted a targeted search of PUBMED for articles, and GEO for datasets, published up to February 13, 2024, screening for those using high-throughput transcriptomic and metabolomic techniques to study human or pre-clinical animal model tissues or biofluids related to obesity-associated OA. We describe relevant studies and discuss challenges studying obesity as a disease-related factor in OA. Results: Of the 107 publications identified by our search criteria, only 15 specifically used transcriptomics or metabolomics to study joint tissues or biofluids in obesity-related OA. Specific transcriptomic and metabolomic signatures associated with obesity-related OA have been defined in select local joint tissues, biofluids and other biological material. However, considerable challenges exist in understanding contributions of obesity-associated modifications of transcriptomes and metabolomes related to OA, including sociodemographic, anthropometric, dietary and molecular redundancy-related factors. Conclusions: A number of additional transcriptomic and metabolomic studies are needed to comprehensively understand how obesity affects OA incidence, progression and outcomes. Integration of transcriptome and metabolome signatures from multiple tissues and biofluids, using network-based approaches will likely help to better define putative therapeutic targets that could enable precision medicine approaches to obese OA patients.

Summary: Background and aims: A healthy diet is one of the pillars of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) treatment. However, the best dietary pattern and indication for specific supplementation have not been established. Our aim is to conduct a pilot study to assess the effect of an adapted cardioprotective diet with or without phytosterol and/or krill oil supplement in participants with a probable or definitive diagnosis of FH, treated with moderate/high potency statins. Methods: A national, multicenter, factorial, and parallel placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial with a superiority design and 1:1:1:1 allocation rate will be conducted. The participants will undergo whole exome sequencing and be allocated into four treatment groups: 1) a cardioprotective diet adapted for FH (DICA-FH) + phytosterol placebo + krill oil placebo; 2) DICA-FH + phytosterol 2 g/day + krill oil placebo; 3) DICA-FH + phytosterol placebo + krill oil 2 g/day; or 4) DICA-FH + phytosterol 2 g/day + krill oil 2 g/day. The primary outcomes will be low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and lipoprotein (a) levels and adherence to treatment after a 120-day follow-up. LDL- and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol subclasses, untargeted lipidomics analysis, adverse events, and protocol implementation components will also be assessed. Results: A total of 58 participants were enrolled between May–August 2023. After the end of the follow-up period, the efficacy and feasibility results of this pilot study will form the basis of the design of a large-scale randomized clinical trial. Conclusions: This study's overall goal is to recommend dietary treatment strategies in the context of FH.

Summary: In humans, dietary patterns impact weight and metabolism differentially across individuals. To uncover genetic determinants for differential dietary effects, we subjected four genetically diverse mouse strains to humanized diets (American, Mediterranean, vegetarian, and vegan) with similar macronutrient composition, and performed body weight, metabolic parameter, and RNA-seq analysis. We observed pronounced diet- and strain-dependent effects on weight, and triglyceride and insulin levels. Differences in fat mass, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle glucose uptake, and gene expression changes in most tissues were strain-dependent. In visceral adipose tissue, ∼400 genes responded to diet in a strain-dependent manner, many of them in metabolite transport and lipid metabolism pathways and several previously identified to modify diet effects in humans. Thus, genetic background profoundly impacts metabolism, though chosen dietary patterns modify the strong genetic effects. This study paves the way for future mechanistic investigations into strain-diet interactions in mice and translation to precision nutrition in humans.

Summary: Uveitis, an autoimmune disease, often leads to blindness. CD4+ T cells, including regulatory T cells (Tregs) and effector T cells (Th1 and Th17), play a critical role in its pathogenesis. Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to alleviate autoimmune diseases. However, careful characterization of the impact of CR on experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) is poorly understood. This study used single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze cervical draining lymph nodes in mice under ad libitum (AL) and CR diets, with or without EAU. CR increased Tregs, altered immune cell metabolism, reduced EAU symptoms, and downregulated inflammatory and glycolysis genes. Flow cytometry confirmed CR’s inhibitory effect on Th1 and Th17 proliferation and its promotion of Treg proliferation. CR also balanced CD4+ T cells by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT/c-Myc pathway and reducing GM-CSF in Th17 cells. These findings suggest CR as a potential therapeutic strategy for autoimmune diseases.

Summary: A ketogenic diet (KD) is increasingly debated as a countermeasure against nutrition-related modern diseases. While being immunologically beneficial, KD is still suspected of having severe metabolic side effects and negatively impacting general well-being, which prevents its widespread clinical use. We conducted a prospective pre-post interventional study investigating the effects of an eucaloric KD on metabolism, weight loss, body composition, diet adherence, and quality of life. The study had two stages: first, feasibility was tested in healthy, normal-weight participants over three weeks. After positive results, the KD period was expanded to three months, enrolling adults with overweight. Significant weight loss was observed in both groups, reducing body fat without affecting muscle or bone mass and without adverse metabolic changes. Quality of life improved, and fatigue symptoms in subjects with overweight decreased. These findings may help to overcome reservations about KD, encouraging its use as a medical tool for treating nutrition-related disorders.

Objectives: The prevalence of a vegan (strict plant-based) diet is increasing. Adequate access to nutritional information for pregnant women on a vegan diet is vital, as optimal maternal nutrition is important in order to prevent maternal and fetal complications. This study evaluated the obstetric healthcare experiences and information needs of pregnant women following a vegan diet in the Netherlands. Methods: An online survey examined women’s experiences with obstetric healthcare in relation to their vegan diet during pregnancy. In total, 195 women, all of whom followed a vegan diet during their pregnancy and gave birth between January 2018 and April 2020, completed an online survey about their experiences. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data. Results: In total, 36.5% of participants reported that an obstetric healthcare provider had inquired about their diet in general during the first prenatal consultation, and an additional 43.1% of participants proactively informed their healthcare provider about their diet. Only 19.0% of all participants received specific information about their vegan diet during pregnancy, and 25.2% reported having had extra checks, mostly blood tests, during their pregnancy. Of all participants, 35.9% would have preferred to receive additional information regarding their diet. Conclusions: Our data shows that only a minority of pregnant women following a vegan diet received information and recommendations about their diet from their healthcare providers. It is our recommendation that healthcare providers inquire about pregnant women’s diets, and refer those following a vegan diet to reliable sources of dietary information or to a specialized dietitian.

Objective: The Plants for Joints (PFJ) intervention significantly improved pain, stiffness, and physical function, and metabolic outcomes, in people with metabolic syndrome-associated osteoarthritis (MSOA). This secondary analysis investigated its effects on body composition. Method: In the randomized PFJ study, people with MSOA followed a 16-week intervention based on a whole-food plant-based diet, physical activity, and stress management, or usual care. For this secondary analysis, fat mass, muscle mass, and bone mineral density were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) for all participants. Additionally, in a subgroup (n ​= ​32), hepatocellular lipid (HCL) content and composition of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were measured using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). An intention-to-treat analysis with a linear-mixed model adjusted for baseline values was used to analyse between-group differences. Results: Of 66 people randomized, 64 (97%) completed the study. The PFJ group experienced significant weight loss (−5.2 ​kg; 95% CI –6.9, −3.6) compared to controls, primarily from fat mass reduction (−3.9 ​kg; 95% CI –5.3 to −2.5). No significant differences were found in lean mass, muscle strength, or bone mineral density between groups. In the subgroup who underwent MRI scans, the PFJ group had a greater reduction in HCL (−6.5%; 95% CI –9.9, 3.0) compared to controls, with no observed differences in VAT composition. Conclusion: The PFJ multidisciplinary intervention positively impacted clinical and metabolic outcomes, and appears to significantly reduce body fat, including liver fat, while preserving muscle mass and strength.

The gut microbiota (GM) plays a key role in health by influencing several physiological functions, including the digestive process, the immune system, vitamin production, and mental health. Dysbiosis in gut microbial composition and function has been linked to systemic inflammatory response and the development of metabolic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM). ''Leaky gut'' resulting from dysbiosis causes endotoxemia, leading to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, which are pathogenetic agents of type 2 and gestational DM. Moreover, in children, gut dysbiosis has been associated with the immunitary dysregulation with increased risk of autoimmunity and development of type 1 DM. However, dietary changes in the GM and their role in DM are poorly understood. Plant-based diets that are low in fat and high in fiber have been associated with beneficial effects on the GM. Clinical trials of prebiotics and probiotics have shown promising, albeit mixed, results. This narrative review summarizes recent findings on the relationship between the GM, diet, and DM, focusing on the systems in which the microbiota is involved in the pathogenesis of this disease and its potential use as a therapy. In addition, we discuss immune dysfunction associated with gut dysbiosis and its role in type 1, type 2, and gestational DM. Further research is needed to evaluate the GM as a potential therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of DM.

Objective: To examine geographic disparities in the nutritional quality of food purchases during the COVID-19 public health crisis in North Carolina (NC). Methods: Using shopper-level longitudinal transaction records between October 2019– and December 2020 from NC’s largest grocery retailer, we fit mixed-effect models to examine disparities in the nutritional quality of food purchases among shoppers in counties with different levels of socioeconomic development and how such disparities changed after March 2020, accounting for other observed and contextual factors. Results: Shoppers in counties with lower development levels purchased a larger share of calories from least healthy foods and a smaller share from healthier foods compared to shoppers in counties with higher development levels. These disparities were slightly attenuated for the least healthy foods and did not change for healthier foods after the onset of the COVID crisis. Conclusion: Despite existing nutritional disparities among shoppers in counties with different levels of socioeconomic development, we did not observe a large-scale accentuation of inequities in dietary quality during the COVID-19 crisis. This pattern may have resulted from programmatic responses to mitigate the adverse effects of the COVID crisis on vulnerable populations. Future work should further explore the role of such responses.

Background: Social media is an online community that offers a digital setting where people create, share, and access a wide range of information, knowledge, and viewpoints. This study assessed the association between social media use and eating behaviors and whether sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle habits are correlated with this association. In addition, it assessed whether this effect is different according to changes in lifestyle habits due to the COVID-19 pandemic among adults in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methodology: A cross-sectional web-based study was conducted among 1056 adults living in the UAE. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, social media use, and dietary habits were collected. The Scale of Effects of Social Media on Eating Behavior (SESMEB) was used and a total score ranging from 18 to 90 was generated with higher scores corresponding to a greater effect. The general linear model analysis assessed associations of certain characteristics with the score. Independent T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to investigate differences based on changes in lifestyle habits due to COVID-19. Results: Most participants (80.3 %) reported using social media >2 h/day. The mean score was 44.15 ± 12.68 (range 18–90). Increasing age, being a male, spending less time on social media, and not following influencers were associated with lower SESMEB scores. Background & Aims: It is unclear to what extent lifestyle and genetic factors affect the incidence of chronic liver disease (CLD) in the general population and if lifestyle affects CLD independently of underlying cardiometabolic perturbations and genetic predisposition. Methods: We examined 27,991 men and women aged 44-73 years from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study recruited between 1991-1996 and followed until the end of 2020 using registry linkage (median follow-up time 25.1 years; 382 incident first-time CLD events). Associations between cardiometabolic factors, polygenic risk scores (PRSs), and lifestyle factors in relation to CLD were examined using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: The incidence of CLD increased with number of cardiometabolic risk factors (the hazard ratio per each additional cardiometabolic risk factor was 1.33; 95% CI 1.21-1.45; p = 5.1 x 10-10). Two novel PRSs for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and a PRS for cirrhosis were associated with higher risk of CLD but provided marginal predictive utility on top of other risk factors and compared to the PNPLA3 rs738409 genetic variant. An unhealthy lifestyle (high alcohol intake, current smoking, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet) markedly increased the risk of CLD (hazard ratio 3.97, 95% CI 2.59-6.10). Observed associations between examined lifestyle factors and CLD were largely independent of cardiometabolic perturbations and polygenic risk. Conclusions: We confirmed the importance of cardiometabolic dysfunction in relation to risk of CLD in the general population. Lifestyle risk factors were shown to be independently associated with CLD and added predictive information on top of cardiometabolic risk factors. Information on the polygenic risk of liver disease does not currently improve the prediction of CLD in the general population. Impact and implications:: This large population-based prospective study suggests largely independent roles of cardiometabolic, lifestyle, and genetic risk factors in the development of chronic liver disease. Findings strengthen the evidence base for a beneficial effect of modification of high-risk lifestyle behaviors in the primary prevention of chronic liver disease in the general population.

Functional foods particularly prebiotics and probiotics have attracted a lot of attention due to their ability to alter gut microbiota and have an impact on a number of health and disease-related factors, in relation to human health in recent years. Functional foods are foods that provide benefits to health beyond simple sustenance. They contain biologically active ingredients that offer additional health benefits when consumed on a regular basis as part of a balanced diet. Prebiotics, which are indigestible fibers that specifically promote the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria, and probiotics, which are live microorganisms that offer health benefits upon consumption of sufficient amount, have shown great promise in modifying the composition and function of the gut microbiota. The identified review problem involves clarifying the precise impacts of prebiotics and probiotics on immune system function, gut microbiota composition, metabolic health, and disease prevention. This review emphasizes the numerous advantages of probiotics and prebiotics in preserving the balance of gut microbiota, boosting immunity, enhancing metabolic parameters, and reducing the risk of a number of diseases. The review also insight to recent advances in the formulation of functional foods in mitigating health conditions and synergy between probiotics and prebiotics.

Fish oils rank among the world’s most popular nutritional supplements and are purported to have numerous health benefits. Previous work suggested that fish oils increase collagen production; however, the effect of fish oils on musculoskeletal health is poorly understood. Further, the divergent effects of omega-3 (Ω3FA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) remains poorly understood. We tested the effects of Ω3FA and SFAs on in vitro-engineered human ligament (EHL) function. EHLs were treated with bovine serum albumin (BSA)-conjugated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5(n-3)), palmitic acid (PA, 16:0), or a BSA control for 6 days. EPA did not significantly alter, whereas PA significantly decreased EHL function and collagen content. To determine whether this was an in vitro artifact, mice were fed a control or high-lard diet for 14 weeks and musculoskeletal mass, insulin sensitivity, and the collagen content, and mechanics of tendon and bone were determined. Body weight was 40 % higher on a HFD, but muscle, tendon, and bone mass did not keep up with body weight resulting in relative losses in muscle mass, tendon, and bone collagen, as well as mechanical properties. Importantly, we show that PA acutely decreases collagen synthesis in vitro to a similar extent as the decrease in collagen content with chronic treatment. These data suggest that Ω3FAs have a limited effect on EHLs, whereas SFA exert a negative effect on collagen synthesis resulting in smaller and weaker musculoskeletal tissues both in vitro and in vivo.

Adult pollinators that forage primarily for energy have traditionally guided our understanding of plant–pollinator interactions, leading to assumptions about the importance of different plants to pollinators. Consequently, pollinator conservation strategies potentially overlook plants that balance juvenile diets. I studied a representative bee, Osmia bicornis, to explore the contributions of various plants to the nutritional quality of a pollinator diet. Using ecological stoichiometry and micronutrient ecology, I investigated the proportions of vital body-building chemical elements (C, N, P, S, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu; henceforth “nutrients”) in larval pollen loads. I considered botanical origin, location and sexual dimorphism in the nutritional niche as factors potentially influencing nutrient proportions in larval diets. Redundancy analysis indicated that the main factor determining nutrient proportion was pollen botanical origin, which accounted for 70.17% of the variation; location contributed 20.21%, and larval sex contributed 8.43%. Among the 30 taxa composing pollen loads, the main determinants of nutrient content were oak, maple, chestnut, the cabbage family, buttercup, and grasses. Trees and wind-pollinated plants provided important nutrients. Oak and maple were the main contributors of nutrients essential for growth and body development (N, P, S, Cu, and Zn). Grasses and buttercups were the main contributors of Na, which is vital for bees. Complex habitat management schemes extending beyond traditional seed mixes are essential for pollinator conservation, as non-obvious plant species provide important nutrients. Trees and wind-pollinated plants should be included in pollinator conservation efforts to create a complex nutritional landscape enabling balanced diets.

Objectives: Hip fractures are associated with a high burden of morbidity and mortality. Diet is essential for preventing fragility fractures, but the role of dietary fatty acids on the risk of hip fracture is uncertain. The aim was to investigate how intake of different dietary fatty acids relates to the risk of hip fracture. A relative validation of the long-term intake of dietary fatty acids estimated from food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) was also performed. Design, settings and participants: We used data collected in two population-based cohorts, the Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Cohort of Swedish men (n = 83,603, 54% men, aged 45–82 years). Data from the repeated investigations in the cohorts and cross-sectional data from their clinical sub-cohorts were used. Measurements: Diet data was collected in FFQs. Incident hip fractures were gathered by individual linkage to national registers. We performed Cox regression analysis to investigate associations between dietary fatty acids and hip fracture. Follow-up time was between January 1st, 1998 and December 31st, 2020. The validation was performed using correlation analyses, comparing fatty acids measured in adipose tissue with estimated fatty acid intakes from FFQs. Results: During up to 23 years of follow-up (mean 18 years) and 1,538,627 person-years at risk, 7345 participants (2840 men) experienced a hip fracture. A low linoleic acid (LA) and high intakes of long-chain n-3 fatty acids were associated with higher hip fracture risk in a non-linear way. In quartile 4 compared to quartile 1 of LA, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio of hip fracture was 0.89 (95% Confidence Interval: 0.81, 0.97). The study confirmed the validity of FFQs to capture the intake of the specific dietary long-chain n-3 fatty acids. The estimated intake of LA, α-linolenic acid, and myristic acid were also adequately captured by the FFQs. Validity was confirmed in both women and men. Conclusion: A low to moderate intake of linoleic acid and a higher intake of long-chain n-3 fatty acids were associated with a higher risk of hip fractures. The results indicate that attention should be paid to dietary fatty acid composition for the optimal prevention of fragility fractures.

Objectives, setting and participants: We aimed to examine changes in dietary habits, lifestyles (e.g., smoking, physical activity levels, and alcohol intake), anthropometry, other individual health-relevant characteristics, and overall adherence to 2018 WCRF/AICR cancer prevention recommendations, among women enrolled in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Florence cohort. Design and measurements: We fitted age- and energy intake-adjusted generalized linear models to describe (a) changes occurring over a person’s lifetime in the transition from adulthood to older age, and (b) differences between women aged 56−60 years belonging to two birth cohorts spaced apart by around 25 years (born in 1933−1941 vs. 1958−1964). Results: Dietary habits and overall adherence to cancer prevention recommendations improved among women (n = 3,309) followed from adulthood to older age (mean age 47.4 and 71.8 years, respectively), despite increases in the prevalence of adiposity and sedentary lifestyle. Women in the younger birth cohort (n = 163) showed significantly greater overall adherence to cancer prevention recommendations than in the older birth cohort (n = 355), but had more often a positive smoking history and an average larger waist circumference. Conclusion: A trend toward better adherence to cancer prevention recommendations emerged when analyzing adult-to-older-age trajectories and differences across birth cohort, yet some critical issues were also identified. Continuous monitoring is essential to detect changing prevention needs and adapt public health policies and practices.

Aim: Online food delivery services (OFDS) are popular for purchasing meals prepared outside home, increasing access to energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods. This adversely impacts dietary choices and health outcomes. Our study examined trends in OFDS use in Australia, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US) from 2018 to 2021. Methods: Repeated annual cross-sectional data was sourced from the International Food Policy Study for five countries among adults over 18 years (N = 83,337). Weighted estimates for trends in i) the proportion of the respondent’s purchasing meals per week using OFDS, and ii) average number (and standard deviation (SD)) of meals purchased per week using OFDS were assessed. Logistic regression models were fitted. Findings: OFDS use increased among adults between 2018–2021 (Australia: 17 % of respondents purchased at least one meal in the last 7 days using OFDS in 2018 to 25 % in 2021, Canada: 12 % to 19 %, Mexico: 28 % to 38 %, UK: 19 % to 28 %, and US: 17 % to 21 %). Average number of meals purchased per week outside home remained consistent for all countries over time (e.g., in Australia, 2.70 (SD 0.06) meals in 2018 and 2.63 (SD 0.06) in 2021). However, average number of meals purchased using OFDS nearly doubled between 2018 and 2021 (e.g., in Australia, 0.45 (SD 0.03) meals in 2018 to 0.81 (SD 0.04) in 2021). Conclusion: OFDS use is increasing and are substituting the conventional forms of purchasing meals outside home. Nutritional quality of foods sold, marketing practices and purchasing patterns on OFDS deserve further attention.

Introduction: Cancer is a leading cause of death in the Americas. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer, while stomach cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Tobacco and alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution are risk factors for these cancers. This study aimed to identify the association between dietary patterns and gastric and colorectal cancer. Methodology: A multi-cluster ecological study, using as secondary sources two national databases, the HIGIA (High-Cost Account) and the ENSIN 2015 (National Survey of Nutritional Status of Colombia 2015), was carried out. The population consisted of 2585 people over 50 years of age, distributed in six regions of Colombia: Atlántica, Central, Oriental, Pacífica, Amazonía-Orinoquía, and Bogotá. Multiple linear regression was performed using R2 to measure goodness of fit to estimate the effect between colorectal cancer incidence rate/gastric cancer incidence rate and exposure factors. Results: A positive association was observed between colorectal cancer and non-compliance with the recommendation of vigorous physical activity (p = 0.00) and consumption of beverages/grilled food pattern (p = 0.001). Conversely, it decreased incidence by enjoying some specific health insurance and following a conservative dietary pattern (p = 0.05). Gastric cancer incidence was found to increase with age (p = 0.000), sex (p = 0.001), and consumption of the beverages/grilled food pattern (p = 0.006). However, being in the first wealth quartile decreased the incidence (p = 0.002). Conclusion: There is evidence of an association between diet, physical activity and wealth quartile with colorectal and gastric cancer. This information should be considered for preventive interventions in the population.

Summary: Background: Decreased levels of circulating ethanolamine plasmalogens [PE(P)], and a concurrent increase in phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) are consistently reported in various cardiometabolic conditions. Here we devised, a plasmalogen score (Pls Score) that mirrors a metabolic signal that encompasses the levels of PE(P) and PE and captures the natural variation in circulating plasmalogens and perturbations in their metabolism associated with disease, diet, and lifestyle. Methods: We utilised, plasma lipidomes from the Australian Obesity, Diabetes and Lifestyle study (AusDiab; n = 10,339, 55% women) a nationwide cohort, to devise the Pls Score and validated this in the Busselton Health Study (BHS; n = 4,492, 56% women, serum lipidome) and in a placebo-controlled crossover trial involving Shark Liver Oil (SLO) supplementation (n = 10, 100% men). We examined the association of the Pls Score with cardiometabolic risk factors, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality (over 17 years). Findings: In a model, adjusted for age, sex and BMI, individuals in the top quintile of the Pls Score (Q5) relative to Q1 had an OR of 0.31 (95% CI 0.21–0.43), 0.39 (95% CI 0.25–0.61) and 0.42 (95% CI 0.30–0.57) for prevalent T2DM, incident T2DM and prevalent cardiovascular disease respectively, and a 34% lower mortality risk (HR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.56–0.78). Significant associations between diet and lifestyle habits and Pls Score exist and these were validated through dietary supplementation of SLO that resulted in a marked change in the Pls Score. Interpretation: The Pls Score as a measure that captures the natural variation in circulating plasmalogens, was not only inversely related to cardiometabolic risk and all-cause mortality but also associate with diet and lifestyle. Our results support the potential utility of the Pls Score as a biomarker for metabolic health and its responsiveness to dietary interventions. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and optimise the practical implementation of the Pls Score in clinical and population settings. BDNF is a protein associated with cognitive dysfunction. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between BDNF and cognitive functions and the intake of macronutrients in postmenopausal women. For this purpose, 72 postmenopausal women were recruited to the study and divided into two subgroups: overweight/obese and normal weight. Using a 3-day food record, nutrition was assessed. The markers studied were the level of BDNF, which was determined from the venous blood serum collected from women, and selected cognitive functions. We observed that in the normal BMI group macronutrient intake was correlated with BDNF levels, and only total fat and carbohydrate intake were inversely correlated with BDNF levels. There were inverse correlations observed among selected parameters of cognitive functioning. In the Ov/Ob group, macronutrient intake correlated with the BDNF level for several variables, e.g. vice versa with total protein, fat and carbohydrate intake, as well as dietary cholesterol. It has also been noted that there are links between the BDNF factor and excessive body weight.

Objectives: 'Super-agers,' individuals over 80 with memory abilities comparable to those 20–30 years younger. The relationship between super-agers and dietary acid load (DAL) is an area that warrants further investigation. We aim to examine the link between DAL and super-agers and assess DAL's effects on cognitive functions across different age groups and cognitive domains. Design: Employing a cross-sectional analysis of the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, we utilized propensity score analysis and multivariate-adjusted regression to mitigate confounding factors. Setting: Older adults aged 60 and above in the United States. Participants: Our primary analysis encompassed 985 older adults, supplemented by a sensitivity analysis with 2,522 participants. Measurements: DAL was assessed through potential renal acid load (PRAL), estimated net acid excretion (NAEes), and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) indices. Results: Super-agers demonstrate a preference for alkaline diets, shown by their lower DAL indices. After inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), multivariate-adjusted logistic regression reveals that each unit reduction in NAEes and PRAL increases the chances of being a super-ager by 3.9% and 3.0%, respectively. The DAL's impact on cognitive function becomes more pronounced with age. Lower PRAL and NAEes scores are significantly linked to higher situational memory and overall cognitive performance scores in those over 70, with these effects being even more pronounced in participants over 80. Conclusion: This research pioneers in demonstrating that super-agers prefer an alkaline diet, highlighting the potential role of alkaline diet in countering cognitive decline associated with aging.

The assembly and succession of the gut microbiota are important events in animal growth and have a significant impact on the productivity of aquaculture organisms, which can be influenced by the environment, growth stages, and dietary changes. However, little is known about how the growth of aquaculture organisms and dietary differences during growth affect the assembly of the gut microbiota. In this study, we fed golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) a regular diet and a high-fat, high-protein diet, respectively. We then used bacterial 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to study the gut microbiota at different growth stages and under different dietary conditions. We found that the gut microbiota of T. ovatus changes in response to different dietary conditions. Moreover, this divergence does not change with the growth of the host. This suggests that dietary differences largely explained the gut microbiota succession, while growth stage had no significant influence on gut microbiota succession in T. ovatus from 30 to 120 dph. This study, which includes the effects of growth stage and diet, increases our understanding of how the gut microbiota of the T. ovatus assembles and colonizes and also provides new insights into the study of the gut microbiota of other aquaculture fish.

An average overweight person can have different fat deposited in target organs or specific body compartments. In the case of pot belly, the accumulation of these fats is in the belly. Central obesity (pot belly) is a result of complex interactions among genetic, environmental, dietary habits, and other lifestyle factors. The gut and enteric microbiota are essential to human health. Each is composed of trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi and Impact numerous physiological processes in humans, such as digestion, immune system regulation, metabolism, and even mental health. This depends on the makeup and balance of this microbiota. An increasing number of studies have investigated the connection between health issues like abdominal obesity and the formation of a “pot belly” and the gut microbiota in recent years. It is extremely concerning that this extra fat buildup in the abdomen region is associated with a higher risk of numerous health issues. To address these health issues and develop prevention and treatment strategies such as the use of prebiotics, probiotics, use of antibiotics, it is essential to comprehend the relationship between pot belly and the enteric microbiota. The aim of this review is to deepen our understanding on relationships between alterations in gut microbiota composition and the development of central obesity. Determine how dysbiosis may contribute to metabolic dysregulation, inflammation, and other factors associated with the accumulation of abdominal fat. Explore potential interventions aimed at modulating gut microbiota composition to mitigate central obesity risk. This may include dietary modifications, probiotic or prebiotic supplementation, fecal microbiota transplantation.

Summary: Background: Consumption of fibre, fruits and vegetables have been linked with lower colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A genome-wide gene-environment (G × E) analysis was performed to test whether genetic variants modify these associations. Methods: A pooled sample of 45 studies including up to 69,734 participants (cases: 29,896; controls: 39,838) of European ancestry were included. To identify G × E interactions, we used the traditional 1--degree-of-freedom (DF) G × E test and to improve power a 2-step procedure and a 3DF joint test that investigates the association between a genetic variant and dietary exposure, CRC risk and G × E interaction simultaneously. Background & aims: Habitual dietary pattern has been shown to be a major modulator of systemic inflammation and is considered a modifiable risk factor for cardio-metabolic diseases (CMDs) and mental health disorders. We examined whether dietary-inflammation is associated with the multimorbidity of CMDs and mental health disorders in urbanizing-villages in southern India. We hypothesized that the participants with higher dietary-inflammation would have a higher burden of multimorbidity. Materials & methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 5984 adults (53% male) participating in the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents' Study. We assessed dietary-inflammation using dietary inflammatory index (DII®) based on intake of 27 micro- and macro-nutrients which were measured using a validated food-frequency-questionnaires. The CMDs and mental health disorders were assessed using standardized clinical procedures and validated questionnaires. ‘Multimorbidity’ was defined as a co-existence of one or more CMDs (hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, angina and stroke) and one or more mental health disorders (depression and anxiety). The association of multimorbidity with dietary-inflammation was examined using robust Poisson regression. Results: The prevalence of multimorbidity was 3.5% and ∼75% of participants were consuming a pro-inflammatory diet (DII >0.0). As compared to the 1st DII-quartile (least dietary-inflammatory group), the adjusted prevalence ratio (95% confidence interval) for the presence of multimorbidity was 1.46(0.87, 2.46) for 2nd, 1.75(1.05, 2.89) for 3rd, and 1.77(1.06, 2.96) for 4th DII-quartile (p-trend = 0.021). There was no evidence of an interaction between DII and sex on multimorbidity. Conclusions: Dietary-inflammation had a positive linear association with the multimorbidity, which suggest that even modest reduction in dietary-inflammation may reduce the multimorbidity burden.

The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a culinary nutrition education program at a 3-month follow-up, in terms of children's dietary practices and variety. The randomized-controlled trial was conducted among Malaysian children aged 10–11 years, in a school-based setting. The main intervention components include a parent-child session on the home food environment, followed by 5 experiential healthy meal preparation sessions, conducted fortnightly with each session lasting an hour. Dietary data were collected using an adapted guided form, in line with the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents at baseline, post-intervention, and a 3-month follow-up (intervention: n = 41, control: n = 42, drop-out rate: 15.3 %). Pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (PIBD) are autoinflammatory, multifactorial diseases that can affect children at any age. There are three types of PIBD: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and unclassified colitis Both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the onset of PIBD. It is suspected that diet composition significantly contributes to IBD risk. On the other hand, in clinical presentation, malnutrition and growth retardation are one of the key signs and they are caused by anorexia and increased metabolism rate. We can say that diet is an important hallmark of PIBD in pathogenesis as well as in the therapy. Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is the most widely used dietary intervention for the treatment of Crohn's disease, but is affected by a low tolerability, especially in pediatric patients. Promising alternative regimens are represented by Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED), and other elimination diets, whose use is gradually spreading. The aim of the review is to provide an overview on the latest evidence about the role of nutrition and diet in pediatric IBD.

There is a growing interest in using sweeteners for taste improvement in the food and drink industry. Sweeteners were found to regulate the formation or dispersal of structural components of microbial biofilms. Dietary sugars may enhance biofilm formation and facilitate the development of antimicrobial resistance, which has become a major health issue worldwide. In contrast, bulk and non-nutritive sweeteners are also beneficial for managing microbial infections. This review discusses the clinical significance of oral biofilms formed upon the administration of nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners. The underlying mechanism of action of sweeteners in the regulation of mono- or poly-microbial biofilm formation and destruction is comprehensively discussed. Bulk and non-nutritive sweeteners have also been used in conjunction with antimicrobial substances to reduce microbial biofilm formation. Formulations with bulk and non-nutritive sweeteners have been demonstrated to be particularly efficient in this regard. Finally, future perspectives with respect to advancing our understanding of mechanisms underlying biofilm regulation activities of sweeteners are presented as well. Several alternative strategies for the application of bulk sweeteners and non-nutritive sweeteners have been employed to control the biofilm-forming microbial pathogens. Gaining insight into the underlying mechanisms responsible for enhancing or inhibiting biofilm formation and virulence properties by both mono- and poly-microbial species in the presence of the sweetener is crucial for developing a therapeutic agent to manage microbial infections.

Objectives: With the acceleration of an aging society, the prevalence of age-related chronic diseases such as physical frailty and sarcopenia is gradually increasing with numerous adverse effects. Dietary nutrition is an important modifiable risk factor for the management of physical frailty and sarcopenia, but there are many complex influences on its implementation in community settings. This study aimed to summarize the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of dietary nutrition interventions for community-dwelling older adults with physical frailty and sarcopenia, and to provide a reference for the formulation of relevant health management programs. Methods: Searches were conducted in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and Cochrane Library from inception to January 2023. Searches were completed for a combination of MeSH terms and free terms. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) instrument was used to appraise quality. Coding and analysis of the extracted information were performed using the socio-ecological modeling framework. The study protocol for this review was registered on the PROSPERO ( CRD42022381339). Results: A total of 10 studies were included. Of these, four were nutrition-only focused interventions, and six were dietary nutrition and exercise interventions. The facilitators and barriers were summarized based on the socio-ecological model that emerged at three levels: individual trait level, external environment level, and intervention-related level, containing ten subthemes. Conclusion: Individual internal motivation and external support should be integrated with the implementation of diet- and nutrition-related interventions in community-living aged people with physical frailty and sarcopenia. Develop “tailored” interventions for participants and maximize available human and physical resources.
