Frequent oil spill accidents caused by transportation, storage and usage may lead to severe damage on aquatic and ecological environments. Effective methods for rapid oil recovery are urgently in demand. Polyvinyl chloride, hydrophobic nano-SiO2, expanded graphite were separately applied to polyurethane and melamine sponge to fabricate superhydrophobic sponge material. The selected superhydrophobic sponge was introduced to establish sponge - covered disc skimmer. Oil recovery tests of the device were conducted to determine the optimum parameters. The examined operating conditions encompassed sponge thickness, immersion depth, rotational speed, oil slick thickness, operation time. The results showed that the melamine sponge modified by both polyvinyl chloride and hydrophobic nano-SiO2 exhibits super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 150.3°. The absorption capacity for diesel oil can reach 53.89 g/g. The absorption capacity can still achieve 90 % of its initial capacity even after 500 extrusion-absorption separation tests. The results indicate the superiority of the superhydrophobic sponge covered surface in oil recovery over the standard steel surface regardless of the operating conditions. The recovery rate of the device can still achieve 96.4 % of its initial capacity with 95 % efficiency even after 85 h operation. The results suggest the superhydrophobic sponge - covered disc skimmer may have great application perspectives in oil spill recovery.

The pyrolysis of plastic waste to fuel will lead to greener waste management, ensure sustainability and serve as an alternative energy source. This study seeks to convert plastic waste into diesel engine-grade oil as an alternative energy source for various applications. A mixture of plastic waste of 58% PET, 20% HDPE, 12% LDPE, 7% PP, and 3% PS were used for the study. Catalytic and thermal pyrolysis was conducted in a batch reactor at a temperature of 450 °C for 2 h using Nitrogen gas. The plastic fuel produced was then analyzed using the Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS). The various characteristics of the oil, such as the kinematic viscosity, calorific value, density, and pour point, were determined. The results indicated that thermal pyrolysis produced 13% liquid, 59% gas and 27% solid residue, and on the other hand, catalytic pyrolysis yielded 15.16% liquid, 69.16% of gas, and 14.8% of solid residue. The FT-IR also showed the presence of aliphatic and aromatic compounds with a predominance of the aliphatic group. From the GC–MS analysis, the plastic fuel contains 30 compounds in the C8- C40 range. The calorific value of plastic fuel after analysis was 43.175 MJ/kg in catalytic pyrolysis and 34.132 MJ/kg in thermal pyrolysis. Also, the kinematic viscosity was 4.344 cSt in catalytic pyrolysis and 2.750 cSt in thermal pyrolysis, while the density and pour point were 0.856 g/cm3 and −17 °C respectively. These results show that catalytic pyrolysis yielded more gas and liquid with high calorific value than the thermal pyrolysis. This is an indication of the use of catalysts to improve the conversion of plastic into energy. The conversion of plastic waste into diesel oil will not only address environmental challenges but help achieve the SDGs 7 & 13 as well as Goal 7 of Agenda 2063.

Desulfurization technology is vital in the removal of sulfur compounds in diesel to attain clean fuels. In this research, the mixing assisted oxidative desulfurization (MAOD) in conjunction with a high shear mixer was used with the catalyst of the activated carbon supported phosphotungstic acid. This study discusses the desulfurization of a simulated diesel, containing 2.3 wt% S of dibenzothiophene and benzothiophene in real fuel oil. The influences of mixing speed (8,000 rpm to 16,800 rpm), mixing time (30 min to 90 min), and mixing temperature (25°C to 65°C) were examined for the sulfur oxidation. A 2k full factorial design and a face-centered cube design were utilized for the screening and optimization studies, respectively, in the experimental runs. The analysis of variance was able to determine and generate a simplified quadratic model to predict the response in the MAOD process. The optimum variables for sulfur conversion were achieved at 88.5 min (mixing time), 16,800 rpm (mixing speed), and 63.28°C (mixing temperature). The confirmatory run resulted in percent oxidation of 62.37 % and validated the generated model. Moreover, the fundamental properties of diesel oil were analyzed for comparison prior to and after the MAOD method. The results revealed the retention of essential properties of the simulated diesel oil even after the MAOD treatment step. Thus, the MAOD process has successfully preserved the properties of diesel oil even after its treatment process. This indicates a promising result of the MAOD process favorable for its future applications.

Pollution caused by petroleum oil in several manners is becoming a threat to aquatic ecosystem. Hence, we carried out an experiment to investigate how diesel oil affects biota behavior, physiological attributes and how they recover by using Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as a model organism. Nile tilapia of two different treatment groups were exposed to 0.1 mL/L and 0.5 mL/L diesel oil for 7 days. Then both groups were kept in completely diesel oil-free water for 14 days. A control group was maintained throughout the experimental period. We examined the behavioral attributes, hemato-biochemical parameters: hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and glucose (Glu), and morphological changes of erythrocytes after diesel exposure and at the end of recovery phase. Our results revealed that there were abnormalities in behavior and significant changes in Hb, RBC, WBC and Glu level in both of the treatment group after 7 days of exposure. Frequencies of erythrocytic cellular abnormalities (ECAs), for example, twin, spindle, elongated, tear drop and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) like notch nuclei, karyopyknosis, nuclear bud and nuclear bridge were prominent in both groups. However, the amount of anomalies was higher in most if not all the cases in 0.5 mL/L treatment group. Nile tilapia of both groups were quick to recover but the 0.1 mL/L group showed profound recovery than the 0.5 mL/L group. However, in the cases of ECAs and ENAs, recovery of the 0.5 mL/L group was insignificant. Hence, our experimental study concluded that the higher the exposure to diesel oil, higher incidences of major health problems are recorded, seriously piercing the healing system of Nile tilapia.

In this research work, selenium dioxide (SeO2) nanorods have been prepared by a solvothermal method in which a strong reducing agent (NaBH4) was used to reduce precursor salt into SeO2 nanorods. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was applied to observe the crystal structure which confirmed its tetragonal geometry. Moreover, morphology and particle size were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM fully described the 1-dimensional morphology of SeO2 nanorods which then arranged themselves to create a 3-dimensional flower-like structure with an average particle size of 50 nm. Also, the catalytic activity of SeO2 nanorods as diesel-additive was studied by defining different parameters such as fire and flash points, calorific value, cloud and pour points, specific gravity, and kinematic viscosity. Subsequently, SeO2 nanorods proved to be an excellent diesel additive due to higher total heat content and lower value of kinematic viscosity which enhances the better performance of the diesel engine.

Meiobenthos has been considered as an excellent tool for biomonitoring assessment. Elevated temperature and oil pollution are considered as the most pervasive aspects of global environmental changes and matter of concern for contemporary society. Presently, very limited information is available about the synergistic effect of these stressors on meiobenthic community structure and tolerance potential from tropical intertidal environment. Here, we assessed their impacts on meiobenthic community by conducting a 60 days long benthocosm experiment selecting three sets of temperature (25°, 30° and 35 °C) and two sets of diesel oil (low and high) combinations. Gradual changes in their community composition were revealed discernibly with exposures to both the disturbances after 30 and 60 days of experimental period. Diversity profiles for the nematodes were less affected, but copepods showed a graded response of decreasing density with increasing dose of both the stressors. Other meiobenthic taxa such as halacarid mite, turbellaria and polycheate juveniles were adversely affected and eliminated from the treatments, howbeit abundance of ostracods, foraminiferans and bivalve settlers varied significantly. A 3-factor PERMANOVA indicated a significant effect of temperature, diesel, between their interaction and interaction among stressors and time on meiofaunal abundances. In case of free-living nematodes, temperature rise and diesel contamination synchronously led to an elimination of k-selected species like Halalaimus gracilis, H. longicaudatus, Oxystomina aesetosa and Pomponema sp. with a significant decrease in abundance of H. capitulatus and Oncholaimus sp. The r-selected species Daptonema invagiferoum, Sabatieria praedatrix, Theristus acer, Monhystera sp. and Thalassomonhystera sp. had endured even at high doses of diesel treatment in three different temperatures set up. The effects were evident in term of changes in life strategies with an increment of opportunistic species and increased trophic diversity of deposit feeders in treated sediments. Overall, elevated temperature together with diesel oil contamination were found to alter species dynamics within shallow intertidal meiobenthic communities, which might have significant Armageddon on benthic ecosystem functioning.

More than 80 % of the primary biomass in marine environments is provided by phytoplankton. The primary mechanism in the trace element sink is the absorption of trace elements by phytoplankton. Because of their difficult degradability and bioaccumulation, petroleum hydrocarbons are one of the most significant and priority organic contaminants in the marine environment. This study chose Chlorella pyrenoidosa as the model alga to be exposed to short and medium-term petroleum hydrocarbons. The ecological risk of accidental and persistent petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was thoroughly assessed. The interaction and intergenerational transmission of phytoplankton physiological markers and trace element absorption were explored to reflect the change in primary biomass and trace element sink. C. pyrenoidosa could produce a large number of reactive oxygen species stimulated by the concentration and exposure time of pollutants, which activated their antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, β-carotene synthesis, antioxidant trace elements uptake) and peroxides production (hydroxyl radicals and malondialdehyde). The influence of the growth phase on SOD activity, copper absorption, and manganese adsorption in both persistent and accidental pollution was significant (p < 0.05, F > Fα). Adsorption of manganese and selenium positively connected with SOD, malondialdehyde, and Chlorophyl-a (p < 0.01). This study investigated the effect of immobilized biosurfactant-producing bacteria on the bioremediation of diesel oil-contaminated seawater. Initially, a biosurfactant-producing bacterium, LQ2, was isolated from a marine cold-seep region, and identified as Vibrio sp. The biosurfactant produced by LQ2 was characterized as a phospholipid, exhibiting high surface activity with strong stability. Meanwhile, the inoculation of biochar-immobilized LQ2 demonstrated superior efficiency in removing diesel oil (94.7%, reduction from 169.2 mg to 8.91 mg) over a seven-day period compared to free-cell culture (54.4%), through both biodegradation and adsorption. In addition, the microbial growth and activity were greatly enhanced with the addition of immobilized LQ2. Further experiment showed that degradation-related genes, alkB and CYP450-1, were 3.8 and 15.2 times higher in the immobilized LQ2 treatment, respectively, than those in the free cell treatment. As a natural adsorbent, sisal (agave sisalana) fibers were used to extract Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn from diesel oil samples for posterior determination (i.e., direct analytical measurements on the solid support) of the analytes by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). In the proposed procedure, 0.2 g of sisal fiber was directly added to 5.0 mL of diesel oil contained in a glass tube. After 5 min of contact time, the mixture was filtered, and the collected fibers were oven-dried for 30 min at 70 °C. After drying, the analytes were quantified directly by EDXRF using the sisal fibers as a solid support. The calibration curves showed linear concentration ranges of 0.09-1.00, 0.12-1.00, 0.09-1.00, 0.06-1.0 μg g -1 for Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) for Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn were 0.03, 0.04, 0.03, and 0.02 μg g -1 , respectively. The repeatability, evaluated by performing ten measurements at a concentration of 0.50 μg g -1 for each metal, with the results expressed in terms of the relative standard deviation (RSD), was 3.2, 6.5, 6.8, and 6.1% for Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn, respectively. The results obtained by the proposed method were compared with the results obtained by a comparative method using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and both results showed good agreement. A method was developed based on reversed-phase vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (RP-VALLME) combined with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry for the determination of Cu, Mn, Ni, and Pb in diesel oil samples. In this procedure, a nitric acid solution was used as the extraction phase to isolate analytes from organic samples. After a centrifugation step, the aqueous phase was added dropwise to a filter paper disc for EDXRF determinations. The following variables were optimized: type of extraction phase solution, concentration of the extraction phase, stirring time, and sample volume. Some instrumental parameters were also evaluated: atmospheric condition, irradiation energy, and irradiation time. Using 100 μL of a 0.075 mol L -1 nitric acid solution as the extraction phase for a sample volume of 5.0 mL and a stirring time of 45 s, the limits of detection were 14, 8, 10, and 7 μg L -1 for Cu, Mn, Ni, and Pb, respectively. The enrichment factors obtained were 34 (Cu), 62 (Mn), 59 (Ni), and 64 (Pb). The precisions, expressed as relative standard deviations (RSDs, %), were calculated from ten replications of the experiment under optimized conditions using standard solutions containing 200 μg L -1 and 400 μg L -1 of all four analytes and ranged between 2.1 and 6.4%. The results of recovery tests ranged from 87 to 112%. The proposed procedure was efficiently applied to the determination of the four analytes in diesel oil samples. Four new Ascomycete fungi capable of degrading diesel oil were isolated from sediments of a river estuary mainly contaminated by shipyard fuels or diesel oil. The isolates were identified as species of Lambertella, Penicillium, Clonostachys, and Mucor. The fungal candidates degraded and adsorbed the diesel oil in suspension cultures. The Lambertella sp. isolate displayed the highest percentages of oxidation of diesel oil and was characterised by the capacity to utilise the latter as a sole carbon source. This isolate showed extracellular laccase and Mn-peroxidase activities in the presence of diesel oil. It was tested for capacity to accelerate the process of decontamination of total petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sediments, co-composted with lignocellulosic residues and was able to promote the degradation of 47.6% of the TPH contamination (54,074 ± 321 mg TPH/Kg of sediment) after two months of incubation. Hazardous fires in fuel storage tanks may result in casualties of great impact. Efforts are being done to master the physics of the phenomena, aiming both avoidance and damage minimization. Flame characterization is an important approach studied by many researchers. This article presents the results of an experimental investigation of diesel oil (S500 type) pool fires under air crossflow conditions. A reduced scale model properly instrumented was tested in an aerodynamic channel. Measurement techniques include analysis of infrared images of pool fires, mass burning rates and flame geometry as a function of air crossflow velocity (which ranged from 0 m/s - quiescent air - to 4.0 m/s). Mass burning rates showed an oscillatory behavior as the crossflow velocity was raised. Regarding flame geometry, for an increasing air crossflow, firstly flame tilt angle increased, flame length decreased and flame height decreased until about 1.5-2.0 m/s, while after that velocity, flame geometry became nearly steady. Geometry results were also compared with thirteen correlations from literature for geometric parameters obtaining good agreement for some of them. The IR-measured temperatures showed that the flame region (reacting region) became hotter and the plume region (non-reacting region) became colder as the air crossflow velocity was increased., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. This study evaluated surface foam spraying technology, which avoids disturbing the soil, to deliver chemical oxidant and oil-degrading microbes to unsaturated soil for 30 days. Hydrogen peroxide foam was sprayed once onto diesel contaminated soil for oxidation of soil total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH). Periodic bioaugmentation foam was sprayed every three days for biodegradation of soil TPH. Foam spraying employing oxidation-bioaugmentation serial application significantly reduced soil TPH concentrations to 550 mg·kg -1 from an initial 7470 mg·kg -1 . This study selected an optimal hydrogen peroxide concentration of 5%, which is capable of treating diesel oil contaminated soil following biodegradation without supplementary iron. Application of hydrogen peroxide by foam spraying increased the infiltration of hydrogen peroxide into the unsaturated soil. Surface foam spraying provided the aqueous phase of remediation agents evenly to the unsaturated soil and resulted in relatively similar soil water content throughout the soil. The easy and even infiltration of remediation reagents increased their contact with contaminants, resulting in enhanced oxidation and biodegradation. Fractional analysis of TPH showed C18-C22 present in diesel as biodegradation recalcitrant hydrocarbons. Recalcitrant hydrocarbons were reduced by 92% using oxidation-biodegradation serial foam, while biodegradation alone only reduced the recalcitrant fraction by 25%., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Studies on fire behavior are extremely important as they contribute in a firefighting situation or even to avoid such hazard. Experimental studies of fire in real scale are unfeasible, implying that reduced-scale experiments must be performed, and results extrapolated to the range of interest. This research aims to experimentally study the fire behavior in tanks of 0.04m, 0.20m, 0.40m, 0.80m and 4.28m diameter, burning regular gasoline or diesel oil S-500. The following parameters were here obtained: burning rates, burning velocities, heat release rates, flame heights, and temperature distributions adjacent to the tank. Such parameters were obtained for each tank diameter with the purpose of correlating the results and understanding the relationship of each parameter for the different geometrical scale of the tanks. Asymptotic results for larger tanks were found as (regular gasoline and diesel oil S-500, respectively): burning rates 0.050kg/(m 2 s) and 0.031kg/(m 2 s), burning velocities 4.0mm/min and 2.5mm/min, heat release rates per unit area 2200kW/m 2 and 1500kW/m 2 , normalized averaged flame heights (H i /D, where H i is the average flame height, D is the tank diameter) 0.9 and 0.8. Maximum temperatures for gasoline pools were higher than for diesel oil pools, and temperature gradients close to the tanks were also higher for the former fuel. Fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline and diesel oil, account for substantial share of the pollution that affects marine ecosystems. Environmental metabolomics is an emerging field that may help unravel the effect of these xenobiotics on seaweeds and provide methodologies for biomonitoring coastal ecosystems. In the present study, FTIR and multivariate analysis were used to discriminate metabolic profiles of Ulva lactuca after in vitro exposure to diesel oil and gasoline, in combinations of concentrations (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, and 1.0% - v/v) and times of exposure (30min, 1h, 12h, and 24h). PCA and HCA performed on entire mid-infrared spectral window were able to discriminate diesel oil-exposed thalli from the gasoline-exposed ones. HCA performed on spectral window related to the protein absorbance (1700-1500cm -1 ) enabled the best discrimination between gasoline-exposed samples regarding the time of exposure, and between diesel oil-exposed samples according to the concentration. The results indicate that the combination of FTIR with multivariate analysis is a simple and efficient methodology for metabolic profiling with potential use for biomonitoring strategies., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Keeping in view the growing concern regarding desulphurization of petroleum products, the present study was under taken to investigate the efficiency of tin impregnated activated charcoal (Sn-AC) as a potential adsorbent for the desulphurization of model and real commercial straight run kerosene and diesel oil samples. The adsorbent Sn-AC was prepared by wet impregnation process in the laboratory and characterized by SEM, EDX and surface area analysis. Initial experiments were carried out using model oil, which was prepared by dissolving dibenzothiophene (DBT) in cyclohexane, the optimum conditions for desulfurization were found to be, 60°C temperature, 1h contact time and adsorbent dosage of 0.8g, under which about 99.4% of DBT removal was attained. Under optimized conditions the desulfurization of real oil i.e., kerosene and diesel oil was also investigated. Kinetic studies revealed that DBT adsorption followed pseudo second order kinetics and the data best fits in the Langmuir adsorption isotherm as compared to Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Using enrichment culture technique, three isolates marked as ODB-1, ODB-2 and ODB-3, were selected from oil contaminated seawater. 16S rDNA gene sequencing indicated that ODB-1 affiliated with Pseudomonas sp. while ODB-2 and ODB-3 affiliated with Brevundimonas sp. Subsequently, the bacterial cells were immobilized on the surface of expanded graphite (EG), expanded perlite (EP) and bamboo charcoal (BC). Among the three isolates, ODB-1 showed a strong binding to the bio-carriers through extracellular polysaccharides, while ODB-2 and ODB-3 made the adhesion to bio-carrier through direct physical adsorption. The immobilized bacteria exhibited good salinity tolerance compared with the planktonic bacteria. Their total diesel oil removal rates were more than 85% after 6 days' incubation. Adsorption-biodegradation process played an important role in the oil-pollution remediation. EG-bacteria system was treated as a promising remediation method, which achieved nearly 100% removal of diesel oil. We evaluated the effects of diesel oil on the bivalve Mytella guyanensis using biomarkers of oxidative stress (glutathione S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced glutathione) after an experimental in situ spill in a mangrove area in southern Brazil. A linear model was developed for the Multiple Before-After Control-Impact (MBACI) experimental design to assess the significance of biological responses. Control and impacted sites were sampled seven and two days before as well as two and seven days after the spill. With the exception of a late response of reduced glutathione (GSH) levels on day seven, none of the biomarkers were significantly altered by the impact. This result was attributed to the high environmental variability of the experimental sites combined with a low sensitivity of Mytella guyanensis to diesel oil at short time-scales. Microorganisms play an important role in the biodegradation of petroleum contaminants, which have attracted great concern due to their persistent toxicity and difficult biodegradation. In this paper, a novel hydrocarbon-degrading bacterium HZ01 was isolated from the crude oil-contaminated seawater at the Daya Bay, South China Sea, and identified as Achromobacter sp. Under the conditions of pH 7.0, NaCl 3% (w/v), temperature 28 °C and rotary speed 150 rpm, its degradability of the total n-alkanes reached up to 96.6% after 10 days of incubation for the evaporated diesel oil. Furthermore, Achromobacter sp. HZ01 could effectively utilize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as its sole carbon source, and could remove anthracene, phenanthrene and pyrence about 29.8%, 50.6% and 38.4% respectively after 30 days of incubation. Therefore, Achromobacter sp. HZ01 may employed as an excellent degrader to develop one cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the bioremediation of marine environments polluted by crude oil., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
