A comprehensive monitoring and risk assessment of arsenic (As) pollution concerning surface water and sediment is performed in the Jie River basin, where gold smelting enterprises are concentrated. The study area is divide into six regions, labeled as A, B, C, D, E, and F, from sewage outlets to downstream. Results shows that with far away from the sewage outlets, the total As concentrations in water and sediment gradually decrease from regions A to F. However, in region F, the concentration of bioavailable As significantly increases in the sediment due to the higher pH, leading to the transformation of As(V) into more mobile As(III). In sediment, Paracladius sp. exhibits strong resistance to As pollution in sediment, which can potentially elevate the risk of disease transmission. In water bodies, diatoms and euglena are the main phytoplankton in the Jie River while toxic cyanobacteria exhibits lower resistance to As pollution. Microplastics have accumulated in the environment since plastic production began, with present-day observations that range from marine trenches to mountains. However, research on microplastics has only recently begun so it is unclear how they have changed over time in many oceanic regions. Our study addressed this gap by quantifying the temporal and spatial dynamics of microplastics in two deep-water regions of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). We isolated agglutinated foraminifera from sediment cores and assessed microplastics that were incorporated into their tests. Our results indicated that microplastics were incorporated by agglutinated foraminifera after plastic production began. Microplastics were higher at deep-water sites and closer to the Mississippi River. This study confirms the presence of microplastic incorporation into agglutinated foraminifera tests and investigates microplastics in deep-water sediments in the GOM. Microplastics (MPs) are widely found in the ocean and cause a serious risk to marine organisms. However, fewer studies have been conducted on benthic organisms. This study conducted a case study on the pollution characteristics of MPs on 16 marine benthic organisms in Haizhou Bay, and analyzed the effects of habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode on the MPs pollution characters. The results showed that MPs were detected in all 16 organisms with an average abundance of 8.84 ± 9.14 items/individual, which is in the middle-high level in the international scale. Among the detected MPs, the main material was cellophane. This study showed that benthic organisms can be used as indicator organisms for MPs pollution. MPs in organisms can be affected by their habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode. This study aimed to examine the benthic structure of Guanabara Bay's (GB) rocky shores through Functional Diversity (FD) perspective. Over a five-year period, benthic communities were periodically examined using photographic samples from the meso-littoral zone. FD were analysed using the Rao Index of marine macroalgae and benthic invertebrates' functional groups (FGs) and their relationship was investigated through null models, considering temporal, geographical, and environmental variations. The entrance site exhibited exclusive FGs and overlap niches more than expected by chance, while the inner site had a higher frequency of Bacterial Biofilm and predominance of competitive exclusion. Orthophosphate and nitrate showed significant correlations with FGs inside the bay, whereas average irradiance and rainfall were at the entrance. Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as an increasing threat to the marine environment, but little is known about their effects on benthic organisms, including sea urchins, when ingested. For this purpose, wild sea urchins (P. lividus) and seafloor sediment samples were investigated across three coastal areas of Zakynthos Island (Ionian Sea), each exposed to different anthropogenic pressures, revealing a consistent pattern in MP abundance, shape, and color. Biomarkers related to oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and genotoxicity showed no significant effects of MP ingestion in the sea urchins, except for a positive correlation between GST activity and ingested MPs, suggesting a possible activation of their detoxification system in response to MP ingestion. Climate-related changes in environmental conditions, such as reduction of sea ice, intensive glacier retreat, and increasing summer precipitation, directly influence the arctic marine environment and, therefore, the organisms living there. Benthic organisms, being an important food source for organisms from higher trophic levels, constitute an important part of the Arctic trophic network. Moreover, the long lifespan and limited mobility of some benthic species make them suitable for the study of the spatial and temporal variability of contaminants. In this study, organochlorine pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB)) were measured in benthic organisms collected in three fjords of western Spitsbergen. Two of these were recommended by the Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (MARBEF) Network of Excellence as European flagship sites, namely Hornsund as the Biodiversity Inventory and Kongsfjorden as the Long-Term Biodiversity Observatory. Adventfjorden, with notable human activity, was also studied. Ʃ7 PCB and HCB concentrations in sediments were up to 2.4 and 0.18 ng/g d.w. respectively. Concentrations of Ʃ7 PCBs and HCB measured in collected benthic organisms were up to 9.1 and 13 ng/g w.w., respectively. In several samples (41 of 169) the concentrations of ∑7 PCBs were below the detection limit values, yet nevertheless the results of the research show effective accumulation of target organochlorine contaminants by many Arctic benthic organisms. Important interspecies differences were observed. Free-living, mobile taxa, such as shrimp Eualus gaimardii, have accumulated a large quantity of contaminants, most probably due to their predatory lifestyle. ∑7 PCB and HCB concentrations were both significantly higher in Hornsund than in Kongsfjorden. Biomagnification occurred in 0 to 100 % of the predator-prey pairs, depending on the congener analyzed. To explore the ecological risks of trace metals in sediments and their relationship with benthic organisms, 12 trace metals were analyzed and the macrobenthos were identified in the sediments collected from the south coast of Zhejiang province which belongs to the East China Sea. Spatially, the concentrations of most trace metals were high in the estuary, except for Ba and Sr. There was no obvious enrichment for trace metals, except that the concentration of Cd slightly exceeded the coastal background. The ecological risks calculated by the concentrations of Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni in sediments showed that the methods based on sediment quality guidelines could judge the ecological risk more intuitively than the methods based on background value (PN, PLI, RI). The continual discharge of pharmaceuticals from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into the marine environment, even at concentrations as low as ng/L, can exceed levels that induce sublethal effects to aquatic organisms. Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant, is the most prescribed antidepressant in Norway, though the presence, potential for transport, and uptake by aquatic biota have not been assessed. To better understand the release and bioaccumulative capacity of amitriptyline, laboratory exposure studies were carried out with field-collected sediments. Influent and effluent composite samples from the WWTP of Stavanger (the 4th largest city in Norway) were taken, and sediment samples were collected in three sites in the proximity of this WWTP discharge at sea (WWTP discharge (IVAR), Boknafjord, and Kvitsøy (reference)). Polychaetes (Nereis virens) were exposed to field-collected sediments, as well as to Kvitsøy sediment spiked with 3 and 30 μg/g amitriptyline for 28 days. The WWTP influent and effluent samples had concentrations of amitriptyline of 4.93 ± 1.40 and 6.24 ± 1.39 ng/L, respectively. Sediment samples collected from IVAR, Boknafjord, and Kvitsøy had concentrations of 6.5 ± 3.9, 15.6 ± 12.7, and 12.7 ± 8.0 ng/g, respectively. Concentrations of amitriptyline were below the limit of detection in polychaetes exposed to sediment collected from Kvitsøy and IVAR, and 5.2 ± 2.8 ng/g in those exposed to Boknafjord sediment. Sediment spiked with 3 and 30 μg/g amitriptyline had measured values of 423.83 ± 33.1 and 763.2 ± 180.5 ng/g, respectively. Concentrations in worms exposed to the amended sediments were 9.5 ± 0.2 and 56.6 ± 2.2 ng/g, respectively. Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) have sparked growing public and scientific concerns as emerging pollutants in recent decades, due to their small size and potential for significant ecological and human health impacts. Understanding the toxicological effects of MNPs on aquatic organisms is of great importance; however, most of the available research on aquatic organisms has focused on the pelagic organisms, and studies on benthic organisms are lacking yet. Being bottom-dwelling creatures, benthos perhaps confronts more extreme pressure from MNPs. Therefore, this review summarizes the current literature on the impacts of MNPs on benthic organisms to reveal their toxicity on the survival, growth, development and reproductive systems. MNPs can accumulate in various tissues of benthos and probably cause tissue-specific damage, resulting in genotoxicity and reproductive toxicity to benthic organisms. And, in severe cases, they may also pass on the adverse effects to the next generations. The complexity of co-exposure to MNPs with other aquatic contaminants is also highlighted. Furthermore, we have comprehensively discussed the internal and external factors affecting the toxicity of MNPs in benthic organisms. Sediment is an important reservoir for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the environment, which likely poses adverse effects to benthos. In this study, the impacts of bioturbation of three benthic organisms, i.e. Chironomus kiiensis, Hyalella azteca and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, on the release of PFOS from sediment were investigated, and the toxic effects of PFOS to C. kiiensis were explored in the presence of one or two of the other benthic organisms. Among the three organisms, C. kiiensis displayed the weakest effect on the distribution of PFOS between sediment and water (P＞0.05). The bioturbation of H. azteca and L. hoffmeisteri distinctly facilitated the suspension of sediment, leading to the enhanced amount of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and the flux of PFOS from sediment to SPM. Consequently, the concentrations of PFOS in the overlying water and pore water decreased significantly. Moreover, both H. azteca and L. hoffmeisteri affected the survival of C. kiiensis, and its mortality increased from 2.8% to 100% and 41.7% respectively. Wildfires are an important environmental problem in forested watersheds and can significantly alter water quality. Besides the reported ecotoxicological effects on pelagic species, the accumulation of post-fire contaminants in river sediments can also impair the benthic species. In this study, three sediment-dwelling species, Chironomus riparius, Atyaephyra desmarestii and Echinogammarus meridionalis, with different sensitivities, habitats, behaviours and/or feeding strategies, were exposed to water and sediments, in in-situ and in laboratory. Four sites were selected in a partially burnt basin (Alfusqueiro river basin), within and upstream the burnt area. The sites within the burnt area showed higher metal burden in both water and sediment, as well as changes in water physico-chemistry, consistently with the typical effects of incoming post-fire runoff. Both in-situ and laboratory exposures to water and sediments affected by the wildfire induced post-exposure feeding inhibition in the three tested macroinvertebrates. In fact, laboratory and field bioassays have produced generally consistent post-exposure feeding inhibition responses, but the most impactful response could be recognised after in-situ bioassays at the river site within the burnt area, where the species respond to the physico-chemical fluctuations during the exposure period. This comparative perspective supports the importance of using in-situ bioassays as a more realistic approach when dealing with complex and intermittent natural samples such as those affected by post-fire runoff. Overall, our results reinforce the awareness about the negative effects of wildfires on benthic biota, with significant feeding depression and consequent reduction in the available energy budget to ensure successful detoxification, growth and reproduction signalling potential trophic and functional disruption at the ecosystem level. The information concerning the toxicity of sinking microplastics (MPs) on benthic marine animals, particularly benthic grazers, is still scant. No study focused on biological weathering of sinked MPs operated by benthic organisms. This study aims at investigating the ingestion and the effects induced by 7-days dietary exposure to environmentally relevant amount (8, 80 and 800 particles/g of food) of irregular shaped and sized (diameter 12.6-1,065 μm; mean diameter 316 ± 12 μm) polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) on a common marine benthic grazer, the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Adverse effects were investigated on digestive tract at biochemical (oxidative stress biomarkers) and tissue level (histopathological analyses). Potential alteration of MP structure/surface and PET macromolecules due to the ingestion of PET-MPs within the sea urchin digestive tract were investigated. Results showed that PET-MPs were efficiently egested by sea urchins without producing histological alterations on digestive tract tissues, only inducing a slight modulation of oxidative status. Sea urchin grazing activity and the related transit of PET-MPs within animal digestive tract slightly affected MP structure and PET composition. Sea urchins serve as an essential niche for benthic ecosystems and are valuable seafood for humans. However, little is known about the microplastics (MPs) accumulation in sea urchins. Here, we investigated the abundances and characteristics of MPs in specific tissues of wild sea urchins for 12 sites across 2, 900 km of coastlines in northern China. Sea urchins from all sites were detected to have MPs, with a total detection rate of 89.52%. The MPs abundance in sea urchins from all sites ranged from 2.20 ± 1.50 to 10.04 ± 8.46 items/individual or 0.16 ± 0.09 to 2.25 ± 1.68 items/g wet weight. The samples from Dalian were found to have the highest value by individual, and samples from Lianyungang had the highest value by gram. Furthermore, MPs were found in different tissues of sea urchins, i.e., gut, coelomic fluid and gonads. The highest abundance of MPs was found in the gut of sea urchins, followed by coelomic fluid and gonads. The size of MPs ranged from 27 to 4742 μm, and the mean size found in gut was bigger than coelomic fluid and gonads. More interestingly, the MPs abundance increased with the decrease of anus size, shell diameter and gonad index (the wet weight ratio of gonad to total soft tissues). The MPs were dominated by fiber in shape, blue-green in colour and cellophane in composition. The biological effects of activated carbon (AC) amendments in sediments were studied with the midge Chironomus riparius. The effects on larvae growth were studied using three different AC particles sizes (PAC: 90% <63μm, MAC: ø 63-200μm and GAC: ø 420-1700μm). The long- term effects of MAC were studied in an emergence experiment over two generations (P, F1), together with larvae growth experiment over three generations (P, F1, F2). Retarded growth and development of the larvae were observed in the two smallest particle sizes (PAC and MAC), as well as morphological changes in the gut wall microvilli layer studied from transmission electron micrographs. In addition, at high AC treatments the larvae reaching fourth instar stage were of a smaller size compared to the controls. With PAC treatment AC amendment dosages higher than 1% of sediment dry weight induced mortality. In the emergence experiment there was an indication of a delay in F1 generation emergence. Male dry weight (dw) in P generation was significantly reduced in the 2.5% MAC treatment. Several studies have suggested that communities associated with artificial substrata support more non-indigenous species (NIS) than natural habitats, and may function as corridors for their expansion. Our study focused on the role of substrate type, timing and duration of submersion as determinants of fouling assemblage. We used plates made of basalt, concrete or fibreglass, to assess early, i.e., 3 months, and late, i.e., 12 months, succession in benthic communities. To assess spatial and temporal variability of the results, sampling was performed at 2 locations and the experiment was repeated in two seasons of the year. Our results showed that the timing and duration of submersion affected the number and percent cover of natives and NIS, as well as assemblage composition. Moreover, the present study showed no support for the hypothesis that marine NIS are more abundant on artificial substrata, as neither of the two artificial substrata tested supported a greater number of NIS compared to basalt (the natural substratum). Overall, fibreglass presented the most different benthic assemblage composition, supporting the fact that the extent and nature of the observed differences varied not only between natural and artificial substrata, but also according to the type of artificial habitat considered. This study investigated phototoxicity of TiO₂ nanoparticles (nano-TiO₂) to a freshwater benthic amphipod (Hyalella azteca) using 48-h and 96-h bioassays. Thorough monitoring of particle interactions with exposure media (Lake Superior water, LSW) and the surface of organisms was performed using dynamic light scattering, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Large agglomeration and sedimentation (>77%) in LSW was observed after 0.5h. A simulated solar radiation (SSR)-favored surface attachment of nanoparticles was observed, indicating enhanced phototoxicity with the increased attachment. A 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) of 29.9 mg/L in H. azteca was calculated, with a daily 4-h UV exposure of 2.2 W/m(2). Phototoxicity of nano-TiO₂ under SSR had a 21-fold increase as compared to that under ambient laboratory light. This phototoxicity was also dependent on UV dose, with calculated LC50s around 22.9 (95% CI, 20.5-23.3)Wh/m(2) when exposed to 20 mg/L nano-TiO₂. Also, H. azteca exhibited negative phototaxis in the presence of shelters, indicating that other factors might play a role in environmental systems. Finally, the environmental implications of nano-TiO₂ to benthic organisms were illustrated, emphasizing the importance of various environmental factors in the ultimate phototoxicity. Samples of the polychaete Chaetopterus variopedatus, worm tubes, commensal crab Polyonyx gibbesi and sediments were collected in eight sites in Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil, in order to evaluate the potential use of the polychaetes and crabs as biomonitors and to assess the relationships and accumulation of trace and major elements in different benthic compartments. Trace and major elements were determined by ICP OES. Organic carbon, total nitrogen and sulfur were determined by CNS elemental analyser. Tubes, crabs and polychaetes were important in the retention of trace and major elements. Metals that presented the highest accumulation in polychaetes (i.e. Mg>Al>Fe>Zn>Mn>Co>Cu>Ba>Cr) where the same for crabs (i.e. Mg>Al>Fe>Mn>Co>Zn>Cu>Ba>Cr). High concentrations of Al, Ba, Cr, Mn and Fe, from terrigenous sources, were observed in tubes, which presented accumulation factors up to 81.5 for Mn. Sedentary polychaetes are seen as good biomonitor alternatives for metal contamination studies, because they are one of the most abundant taxon in the benthic system, live in direct contact with sediments, are present in broad distributions and can also handle relatively high concentrations of metals ensuring chronic exposition.
