The loss of ecosystem functions and services caused by rapidly declining coastal marine ecosystems, including corals and bivalve reefs and wetlands, around the world has sparked significant interest in interdisciplinary methods to restore these ecologically and socially important ecosystems. In recent years, 3D-printed artificial biodegradable structures that mimic natural life stages or habitat have emerged as a promising method for coastal marine restoration. The effectiveness of this method relies on the availability of low-cost biodegradable printing polymers and the development of 3D-printed biomimetic structures that efficiently support the growth of plant and sessile animal species without harming the surrounding ecosystem. In this context, we present the potential and pathway for utilizing low-cost biodegradable biopolymers from waste biomass as printing materials to fabricate 3D-printed biodegradable artificial structures for restoring coastal marine ecosystems. Various waste biomass sources can be used to produce inexpensive biopolymers, particularly those with the higher mechanical rigidity required for 3D-printed artificial structures intended to restore marine ecosystems. Advancements in 3D printing methods, as well as biopolymer modifications and blending to address challenges like biopolymer solubility, rheology, chemical composition, crystallinity, plasticity, and heat stability, have enabled the fabrication of robust structures. The ability of 3D-printed structures to support species colonization and protection was found to be greatly influenced by their biopolymer type, surface topography, structure design, and complexity. Considering limited studies on biodegradability and the effect of biodegradation products on marine ecosystems, we highlight the need for investigating the biodegradability of biopolymers in marine conditions as well as the ecotoxicity of the degraded products. Background: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) injection has emerged as a novel treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA). In addition, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been reported to delay the progression of OA. Thus, the current study on animal models of OA investigated the effectiveness of these methods when administered independently and combined., Methods: Twenty-five guinea pig models of OA were randomly sorted into five study groups. The test groups received intra-articular MSC, LLLT, and a combination of these therapeutics for 8 weeks. Radiological and histopathologic evaluations were carried out for the test groups and the control after the completion of treatments., Results: The MSC-treated groups showed better outcomes in terms of all radiological and histological indexes compared with the control, apart from subchondral bone (P < 0.05). Similarly, but to a different extent, the LLLT-treated group showed better results than the controls (P < 0.05). The combination of MSC therapy and LLLT improved the cartilage, surface, matrix, space width, osteophytes, and radiologic OA scores more effectively than each of these methods alone (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: According to our results, the combination of intra-articular MSC and LLLT can effectively improve OA in animal models. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that leads to cognitive decline and memory loss. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for this condition, so there is a growing interest in developing new anti-AD agents. In this research project, a series of phenyl-quinoline derivatives were designed as potential anti-AD agents. These derivatives were substituted at two different positions on benzyl and phenyl rings. The structures of the derivatives were characterized using techniques such as IR spectroscopy, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and elemental analysis. During the in vitro screening, the derivatives were tested against both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). It was observed that most of the derivatives showed higher selectivity against BChE compared to AChE. Among the derivatives, analog 7n (with a methoxy group at R 1 and a 4-bromine substituent at R 2 exhibited the highest potency, with a 75-fold improvement in the activity compared to the positive control. Importantly, this potent analog demonstrated no toxicity at the tested concentration on SH-SY5Y cells, indicating its potential as a safe anti-AD agent. The level of GSK-3β was also reduced after treatments with 7n at 50 μM. A novel strategy was designed and developed based of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated crosslinking of tyramine-functionalized starch (Tyr-St), tannic acid (TA) and phenolated-magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -PhOH NPs), and simultaneous loading of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) to afford a pH-responsive magnetic hydrogel-based drug delivery system (DDS) for synergistic in vitro chemo/hyperthermia therapy of human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. The developed St-g-PTA/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic hydrogel showed porous micro-structure with saturation magnetization (δ s ) value of 19.2 emu g -1 for Fe 3 O 4 NPs content of ∼7.4 wt%. The pore sizes of the St-g-PTA/Fe 3 O 4 hydrogel was calculated to be 2400 ± 200 nm -2 . In vitro drug release experiments exhibited the developed DDS has pH-dependent drug release behavior, while at physiological pH (7.4) released only 30 % of the loaded drug after 100 h. Human serum albumin (HSA) adsorption capacities of the synthesized St/Fe 3 O 4 and St-g-PTA/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic hydrogels were obtained as 86 ± 2.2 and 77 ± 1.9 μgmg -1 , respectively. The well-known MTT-assay approved the cytocompatibility of the developed St-g-PTA/Fe 3 O 4 hydrogel, while the Dox-loaded system exhibited higher anti-cancer activity than those of the free Dox as verified by MTT-assay, and optical as well as florescent microscopies imaging. Covering surgical wounds with biomaterials, biologic scaffolds, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improves the healing process and reduces postoperative complications. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the effect of MSC-free/MSC-seeded new collagen/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (COL/P3HB) composite scaffold and human amniotic membrane (HAM) on the colon anastomosis healing process. COL/P3HB scaffold was prepared using freeze-drying method. MSCs were isolated and characterized from rat adipose tissue. After biocompatibility evaluation by MTT assay, MSCs were seeded on the scaffold and HAM by micro-mass seeding technique. In total, 35 male rats were randomly divided into five groups. After the surgical procedure, cecum incisions were covered by the MSC-free/MSC-seeded scaffold or HAM. Incisions in the control group were only sutured. One month later, the healing process was determined by stereological analysis. The Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's tests were utilized for statistical outcome analysis (SPSS software version 21). COL/10% P3HB scaffold showed the best mechanical and structural properties (7.86 MPa strength, porosity more than 75%). MTT assay indicated that scaffold and especially HAM have suitable biocompatibility. Collagenization and neovascularization were significantly higher, and necrosis was considerably lower in all treated groups in comparison with the controls. MSC-seeded scaffold and HAM significantly decrease inflammation and increase gland volume compared with other groups. The MSC-seeded HAM was significantly successful in decreasing edema compared with other groups. Newly synthesized COL/P3HB scaffold improves the colon anastomosis healing; however, the major positive effect belonged to HAM. MSCs remarkably increase their healing process. Purpose: Tuberculosis, a cost and life threatening disease, was being subjected for improving vaccine strategies beyond BCG. Thus, a novel particulate delivery system using alginate-coated chitosan nanoparticles including PPE17 protein and CpG were administered through intranasal (IN) and subcutaneous (SC) routes., Methods: The encapsulated nanoparticles were first characterized for size, surface charge, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release of PPE17 antigen. The nanoparticles were then administered intranasal and subcutaneously to evaluate the induction of systemic and/or mucosal immune responses in mice., Results: According to our result, the mean size of nanoparticles was measured about 427 nm, and exhibited a negative zeta potential of -37 mV. Following subcutaneous and intranasal administration, the results from cytokines assay showed that an increasing in the level of IFN-γ, and adversely a decrease in the level of IL-4 (presumptive Th1 biased immune response) was happened and also a notable elicitation in IL-17 cytokine was observed., Conclusion: In conclusion, our study demonstrated that alginate-coated chitosan nanoparticles showed to be an effective way to improve BCG efficiency as booster strategy for subcutaneous vaccine, and also can induce strong immune responses as prime strategy through intranasal vaccination., (Copyright © 2021. Wind turbine technology is pursuing the maturation using advanced multi-megawatt machinery equipped by powerful monitoring systems. In this work, a multichannel convolutional neural network is employed to develop an autonomous databased fault diagnosis algorithm. This algorithm has been evaluated in a 5MW wind turbine benchmark model. Several faults for various wind speeds are simulated in the benchmark model, and output data are recorded. A multichannel convolutional neural network with multiple parallel local heads is utilized in order to consider changes in every measured variable separately to identify subsystem faults. Time-domain signals obtained from the wind turbine are portrayed as images and fed independently to the proposed network. Two polyhydroxylated oleanane and seven ursane triterpenoids were isolated from aerial parts of Salvia grossheimii. The chemical structures of the undescribed triterpenoids (1-6) were characterized using 1 and 2 D NMR and ESI-MS spectral data as; 2α, 3β, 11α -trihydroxy-olean-12- ene (1), 2α, 3β, 11α-trihydroxy-olean-18-ene (2), 2α- acetoxy-urs-12-ene-3β, 11α, 20β-triol (3), 3-keto-urs-12-ene-1β, 11α, 20β -triol (4), 2α, 3β-diacetoxy-urs-12-ene-1β, 11α, 20β -triol (5), and 3β-acetoxy-urs-12-ene-1β, 11α, 20β -triol (6). All compounds were evaluated for the in vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory and cytotoxic activities against MCF-7 human cancer cell line. Compounds 1, 2, 4, and 6 showed in vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC 50  = 43.6-198.4 µM, which were more potent than the antidiabetic medicine, acarbose. The remaining compounds; 3, and 7-9 showed potent cytotoxic activity (IC 50  = 6.2-31.9 µM) against the cancerous cell line, while the potent α-glucosidase inhibitors were inactive. Molecular docking analysis and kinetic studies were applied to investigate the structure activity relationships and mechanisms of the human and Saccharomyces cerevisiae α-glucosidase inhibitory of the purified compounds. Comparing the high cytotoxicity and α-glucosidase inhibitory of the oleanane and ursane type triterpenoids suggest them as potential lead compounds for further research in anticancer and antidiabetic research., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Problem: The steep increase and inappropriateness of caesarean birth represent a healthcare problem in Iran., Aim: The purpose of study was to evaluate the effect of a campaign based on social marketing to promote normal childbirth., Method: The study was designed as a prospective case control study. The social marketing campaign was implemented from March 2016 to January 2017. A demographic data questionnaire, obstetrical history questionnaire, maternal knowledge assessment questionnaire, and maternal health belief questionnaire comprised the instruments for this study. Only women planning a caesarean birth without any medical indications for the caesarean were enrolled in the study as a case. Those who met the same inclusion criteria and did not want to participate in the campaign were assigned to the control group., Findings: In total, 350 first-time pregnant women who composed the campaign group (n=194) and control group (n=156) completed the study. The mean baseline level of knowledge and Health Belief Model component score did not differ between the two groups at baseline. However, after the campaign, knowledge scores, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, and cues to action scores differed significantly between the campaign and control groups. The follow-up of all participants in both groups showed that 35.6% (n=69) of participants in the campaign group chose natural birth as their birth method, whereas only 13.5% (n=21) in the control group delivered their newborn vaginally., Conclusion: The B Butterfly social marketing campaign successfully targeted first-time pregnant women who chose to have unnecessary elective cesarean births., (Copyright © 2018 Australian College of Midwives. Depression is a critical mood disorder that affects millions of patients. Available therapeutic antidepressant agents are associated with several undesirable side effects. Recently, it has been shown that Neurokinin 1 receptor (NK 1 R) antagonists can potentiate the antidepressant effects of serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In this study, a series of phenyl piperidine derivatives as potent dual NK 1 R antagonists/serotonin transporter (SERT) inhibitors were applied to quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. A collection of chemometrics methods such as multiple linear regression (MLR), factor analysis-based multiple linear regression (FA-MLR), principal component regression (PCR), and partial least squared combined with genetic algorithm for variable selection (GA-PLS) were applied to make relations between structural characteristics and NK 1 R antagonism/SERT inhibitory of these compounds. The best multiple linear regression equation was obtained from GA-PLS and MLR for NK 1 R and SERT, respectively. Based on the resulted model, an in silico-screening study was also conducted and new potent lead compounds based on new structural patterns were designed for both targets. Molecular docking studies of these compounds on both targets were also conducted and encouraging results were acquired. There was a good correlation between QSAR and docking results. The results obtained from validated docking studies indicate that the important amino acids inside the active site of the cavity that are responsible for essential interactions are Glu33, Asp395 and Arg26 for SERT and Ala30, Lys7, Asp31, Phe5 and Tyr82 for NK 1 R receptors., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Although vaginal birth is the safest type of childbirth, sometimes caesarean is necessary for the safety of the mother or the infant. The problem is that low-risk, healthy women are choosing caesarean as a birth option despite the fact that it is fraught with possible complications., Aim: To determine the differences and identify the predictors for the way women plan their childbirth based on Health Belief Model., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Bandar abbas city, Iran, from May to October 2015. The study recruited eligible women who self identified themselves as requesting a caesarean or vaginal birth in their response to a questionnaire., Findings: Of 470 recruited women, 183 (38.9%) planned to have a caesarean without medical indication. Maternal characteristics (age, level of education, occupational status, involvement in a medical profession, and household income) and obstetric variables (health provider type, place of prenatal care, and the number of children planned for the future) influenced the decisions made by the women. There was a significant difference between women planning a caesarean and those planning vaginal birth in terms of childbirth knowledge. Significant differences were observed regarding maternal self-efficacy, with women planning a caesarean reporting significantly lower self-efficacy than women planning a vaginal birth. Women planning a caesarean birth were also significantly less likely to perceive themselves as being at risk for caesarean-related side effects than women planning a vaginal birth., Conclusion: Comprehensive childbirth knowledge can lead to positive maternal attitude towards vaginal birth and may improve birth confidence., (Copyright © 2016 Australian College of Midwives. A rapid, simple and inexpensive spectrofluorimetric sensor for determination of doxycycline based on its interaction with thioglycolic acid-capped cadmium telluride quantum dots (TGA/CdTe QDs) has been developed. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the sensor exhibited a fast response time of <10s. The results revealed that doxycycline could quench the fluorescence of TGA/CdTe QDs via electron transfer from the QDs to doxycycline through a dynamic quenching mechanism. The sensor permitted determination of doxycycline in a concentration range of 1.9×10(-6)-6.1×10(-5)molL(-1) with a detection limit of 1.1×10(-7)molL(-1). Objective: Manual removal of placenta is performed in 1-3% of cases, and although it is a well-established and relatively safe procedure, it is not without complications. We carried out this study to determine whether intraumbilical vein oxytocin injection reduces the need for manual removal of placenta and shortens the third stage of labor, in comparison with placebo., Materials and Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 178 women with singleton pregnancy and normal delivery were studied in 1 year. Immediately after fetus delivery, oxytocin infusion (20 IU/L) was started in both groups. Moreover, 10 IU oxytocin and 1 mL normal saline were injected into the umbilical vein of women in the experimental and control groups, respectively. The duration of third-stage labor, need for manual delivery of placenta, and drug side effects were evaluated in both groups. With regard to the mean level of hemoglobin before and after delivery, the two groups were compared using the Levene test and independent t test, and other qualitative variables of the two groups were compared using the χ(2) test., Results: The women who received intraumbilical vein oxytocin had a shorter third stage of labor as compared with the placebo group (4.24 ± 3.27 min vs. 10.66 ± 7.41) (p < 0.001) and there was less need for manual delivery of placenta in the experiment group (1.1% vs. 5.1%) (p = 0.024)., Conclusion: It was concluded that intraumbilical vein administration of 10 IU (1 mL) oxytocin immediately after fetus delivery was clinically effective in shortening the third stage of labor., (Copyright © 2013. Objective: To assess which subjective scale, the visual analogue scale (VAS), the Borg CR10 (Borg) scale, or the Likert scale (LS), if any, is decidedly more reproducible and sensitive to change in the assessment of symptoms., Design: Prospective clinical study., Setting: Exercise laboratory., Participants: Twenty-three physically active male subjects (mean +/- SD age of 30 +/- 4 years old) were recruited., Intervention: Each subject attended the exercise laboratory on four occasions at intervals of 1 week. Three subjective scales were used: (1) the VAS (continuous scale); (2) the Borg scale (12 fixed points); and (3) the Likert scale (LS; 5 fixed points). Four identical submaximal tests were given (2 min at 60% maximum oxygen uptake [VO(2)max] and 6 min at 70% VO(2)max). Two tests were undertaken to assess the reproducibility of scores that were obtained with each subjective scale. Two other tests were undertaken to assess the sensitivity of each scale to a change in symptom perception: a double-blind treatment with propranolol, 80 mg, (ie, active therapy; to increase the sensation of breathlessness and general fatigue during exercise) or matching placebo. The subjective scale scores were measured at 1 min 30 s, 5 min 30 s, and 7 min 15 s of exercise. Reproducibility was defined as the proportion of total variance (ie, between-subject plus within-subject variance) explained by the between-subject variance given as a percentage. Sensitivity was defined as the effect of the active drug therapy over the variation within subjects., Results: Overall, the VAS performed best in terms of reproducibility for breathlessness and general fatigue, with reproducibility coefficients as high as 78%. For sensitivity, the VAS was best for breathlessness (ratio, 2.7) and the Borg scale was most sensitive for general fatigue (ratio, 3.0). The relationships between the respective psychological and physiologic variables were reasonably stable throughout the testing procedure, with overall typical correlations of 0.73 to 0.82, Conclusion: This study suggests that subjective scales can reproducibly measure symptoms during steady-state exercise and can detect the effect of a drug intervention. The VAS and Borg scales appear to be the best subjective scales for this purpose.
