The H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus (AIV) is widely prevalent in poultry and wild birds globally, and has become the predominant subtype circulating in poultry in China. The H9N2 AIV can directly or indirectly (by serving as a “donor virus”) infect humans, posing a significant threat to public health. Currently, there is a lack of in-depth research on the prevalence of H9N2 viruses in Shanxi Province, central China. In this study, we isolated 14 H9N2 AIVs from October 2020 to April 2022 in Shanxi Province, and genetic analysis revealed that these viruses belonged to 7 different genotypes. Our study on animals revealed that the H9N2 strains we identified displayed high transmission efficiency among chicken populations, and exhibited diverse replication abilities within these birds. These viruses could replicate efficiently in the lungs of mice, with one strain also demonstrating the capacity to reproduce in organs like the brain and kidneys. At the cellular level, the replication ability of different H9N2 strains was evaluated using plaque formation assays and multi-step growth curve assays, revealing significant differences in the replication and proliferation efficiency of the various H9N2 viruses at the cellular level. The antigenicity analysis suggested that these isolates could be classified into 2 separate antigenic clusters. Our research provides crucial data to help understand the prevalence and biological characteristics of H9N2 AIVs in central China. It also highlights the necessity of enhancing the surveillance of H9N2 AIVs.

In this study, coal samples' reactive group contents were changed using extractants, and the effects of the reactive group contents spontaneous coal combustion were investigated using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that the coal samples' hydroxyl group contents decreased in the order ethylenediamine (3.832 %) > N-methyl-2-pyrollidone mixed solution (2.091 %) > petroleum ether (0.882 %) > toluene (0.495 %) and that the hydroxyl group content was inversely related to the characteristic temperature point. RDG analysis showed that ethylenediamine formed N–H–O hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl-group-bearing molecules, coal molecules formed C–H–O hydrogen bonds with NMP molecules, petroleum ether generated a cumulative dispersive force with aliphatic side chains, and toluene molecules' benzene rings formed a very stable spatial structure with coal molecules' benzene rings. The thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry curves showed that because the characteristic temperature points of the extracted coal samples moved to the high-temperature region from T5 onward, the coal samples had to be heated to a higher temperature to reach the energy required for the reaction. From the DSC thermograms, the exergy decreased in the order toluene (110.68 J/g) > NMP (110.52 J/g) > ethylenediamine (78.29 J/g) > petroleum ether (65.45 J/g). With increasing temperature from T1 to T6, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the alcoholic and phenolic hydroxyl groups were calculated at −0.7, −0.72, −0.93, −0.84, −0.8, −0.8, and −0.93 and −0.72, −0.91, −0.83, −0.79, −0.815, and −0.91, respectively, indicating that the hydroxyl group content influenced the coal's spontaneous combustion more than the other groups' contents.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous in daily life, posing potential risks to the environment and human. While their negative effects on parental organisms have been extensively studied, intergenerational effects are still in the early stages of investigation. Here, we aimed to investigate the impact of maternal exposure to an environmentally relevant level of polystyrene NPs (PSNPs, 100 nm) during gestation and lactation (∼32 days, 50 μg/mouse/day) on neurotoxicity mediated by the microbe-gut-brain axis in offspring mice. Maternal PSNPs exposure significantly increased brain TNF-α level and microglia by 1.43 and 1.48 folds respectively, compared to control, accompanied by nuclear pyknosis and cell vacuolization in cortex and hippocampus. Targeted neurotransmitter metabolomics analysis revealed dysregulation in dopamine and serotonin metabolism. Specifically, dopamine levels increased significantly from 0.007 ng/L to 0.015 ng/L, while N-acetylseroton and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid decreased significantly from 0.002 and 0.929 ng/L to 0.001 and 0.680 ng/L, respectively. Through a combination of 16S rRNA sequencing and biochemical analysis, we discovered that maternal PSNPs exposure led to a depletion of anti-inflammatory bacteria and an enrichment of pro-inflammatory bacteria resulting in intestinal barrier damage, elevated levels of lipopolysaccharide in blood, and subsequent activation of neuroinflammation. Meanwhile, gut bacteria dysbiosis interfered with communication between gut and brain by dysregulating neurotransmitter synthesis, as evidenced by significant associations between neurotransmitter-related bacteria (Akkermansia, Family_XIII_AD3011_group, Lachnoclostridium) and dopamine/serotonin related metabolites. Furthermore, transcriptional alterations in dopamine and serotonin related pathways were observed in the enteric nervous system, suggesting abnormal signal transduction from gut to brain contributes to neurotoxicity. This study provides new insights into NPs-induced neurotoxicity within the context of microbe-gut-brain axis and highlights the risk of cerebral dysfunction in offspring with maternal NPs exposure.

An increasing number of people undergo anesthesia and surgery. Perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders are common central nervous system complications with similar pathogeneses. These conditions pose a deleterious threat to human health and a significant societal burden. In recent years, numerous studies have focused on the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the central nervous system via the gut-brain axis. Its involvement in perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders has attracted considerable attention. This review aimed to elucidate the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders, as well as the value of targeted interventions and treatments.

ABSTRACT: The wide distribution and diverse varieties of chickens make them important models for studying genetic adaptation. The aim of this study was to identify genes that alter heat adaptation in commercial chicken breeds by comparing genetic differences between tropical and cold-resistant chickens. We analyzed whole-genome resequencing data of 186 chickens across various regions in Asia, including the following breeds: Bian chickens (B), Dagu chickens (DG), Beijing-You chickens (BY), and Gallus gallus jabouillei from China; Gallus gallus murghi from India; Vietnam native chickens (VN); Thailand native chickens (TN) and Gallus gallus spadiceus from Thailand; and Indonesia native chickens (IN), Gallus gallus gallus, and Gallus gallus bankiva from Indonesia. In total, 5,454,765 SNPs were identified for further analyses. Population genetic structure analysis revealed that each local chicken breed had undergone independent evolution. Additionally, when K = 5, B, BY, and DG chickens shared a common ancestor and exhibited high levels of inbreeding, suggesting that northern cold-resistant chickens are likely the result of artificial selection. In contrast, the runs of homozygosity (ROH) and the ROH-based genomic inbreeding coefficient (FROH) results for IN, TN, and VN chickens showed low levels of inbreeding. Low population differentiation index values indicated low differentiation levels, suggesting low genetic diversity in tropical chickens, implying increased vulnerability to environmental changes, decreased adaptability, and disease resistance. Whole-genome selection sweep analysis revealed 69 candidate genes, including LGR4, G6PC, and NBR1, between tropical and cold-resistant chickens. The genes were further subjected to GO and KEGG enrichment analyses, revealing that most of the genes were primarily enriched in biological synthesis processes, metabolic processes, central nervous system development, ion transmembrane transport, and the Wnt signaling pathway. Our study identified heat adaptation genes and their functions in chickens that primarily affect chickens in high-temperature environments through metabolic pathways. These heat-resistance genes provide a theoretical basis for improving the heat-adaptation capacity of commercial chicken breeds.

Diabetic wounds pose a clinical challenge due to persistent inflammation, severe bacterial infections, inadequate vascularization, and pronounced oxidative stress. Current therapeutic modalities fail to provide satisfactory outcomes in managing these conditions, resulting in considerable patient distress. Two-dimensional nanomaterials (2DNMs), characterized by their unique nanosheet structures, expansive surface areas, and remarkable physicochemical properties, have garnered considerable attention for their potential in therapeutic applications. Emerging 2DNMs can be loaded with various pharmacological agents, including small molecules, metal ions, and liposomes. Moreover, they can be integrated with various biomaterials such as hydrogels, microneedles, and microspheres, thus demonstrating unprecedented advantages in expediting the healing process of diabetic wounds. Moreover, 2DNMs exhibit exceptional performance characteristics, including high biocompatibility, effective antimicrobial properties, optimal phototherapeutic effects, and enhanced electrostimulation capabilities. These properties enable them to modulate the wound microenvironment, leading to widespread application in tissue repair with remarkable outcomes. This review delineates several emerging 2DNMs, such as graphene and its derivatives, black phosphorus, MXenes, and transition metal dichalcogenides, in the context of diabetic wound repair. Furthermore, it elucidates the translational challenges and future perspectives of 2DNMs in wound healing treatments. Overall, 2DNMs present a highly promising strategy for ameliorating diabetic wounds, thus providing novel avenues for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in diabetic wound management.

Understanding the impacts of drought on plant photosynthetic phenology and physiology is essential for accurately predicting annual gross primary productivity (GPP) and global carbon cycles. While droughts in different seasons can have different effects on plant growth and photosynthesis, a comprehensive understanding of how plant photosynthetic phenology and physiology respond to different seasons’ droughts and their temporal changes is lacking. Here, we comprehensively evaluated the drought sensitivities of plant photosynthetic phenology and physiology and their temporal trends in the past two decades, using the start/end of the photosynthetic seasons (SOS/EOS) and peak GPP (GPPmax) derived from FLUXNET ground observations since the 1990s and remote-sensing data (2001–2020) over the globe. Our results show that spring droughts leads to delayed SOS in arid ecosystems and advanced SOS in humid ecosystems. In contrast, droughts in summer and autumn generally advance EOS. In addition, spring droughts decrease GPPmax in arid regions but increase it in humid regions, whereas summer droughts lead to significant GPPmax reductions. More importantly, we observed significant increases in the drought sensitivity of SOS, EOS, and GPPmax over the last two decades, which is driven by long-term decreases in background soil moisture and increases in atmospheric water deficit under climate change. Furthermore, these increasing trends were projected to persist in the 21st century under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways 8.5 and 4.0. Overall, our findings underscore the critical role of drought timing in shaping ecosystem responses and highlight the growing vulnerability of ecosystem phenology and physiology to drought, which may restrict the increases in terrestrial carbon uptake under warming.

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is strongly correlated with gross primary productivity (GPP). Satellite-observed canopy SIF (SIFobs) captures only a part of the total leaf-emitted SIF (SIFtotal); therefore, SIFobs may hinder the interpretation of the physiological mechanism for GPP estimation. Furthermore, there are still significant discrepancies in the estimated SIFobs escape ratio (fesc) from the canopy to the leaf level with current methods. Here, we selected several vegetation canopy variables and downscaled SIFobs based on the Soil Canopy Observation, Photochemistry and Energy fluxes (SCOPE) model from the canopy to the leaf level using machine learning (ML) algorithms and then applied our method to the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) near-infrared (NIR) SIFobs. The results showed that simulating the fesc with SIFobs, TROPOMI NIR reflectance, and the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) avoided the effects of different sun-sensor geometry conditions introduced by different sensors and was more suitable for satellite-observed SIFobs downscaling. Our downscaled SIFtotal also correlated well with the flux site GPP in areas with sparse vegetation types. SIFtotal better reflected the photosynthetic differences among vegetation types and showed an enhanced relationship with absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) compared with SIFobs. We provide an efficient canopy-to-leaf SIFobs downscaling method improved SIFtotal and GPP estimation, and our results also demonstrated the potential for using SIFobs as vegetation information in sparse coverage areas.

Rice breeders have developed numerous hybrid rice varieties with high yield and improved quality over the years. However, limited information is available on the stability of quality traits in high-quality rice. This study determined the stability of quality traits in two high-quality hybrid rice varieties, Zhuliangyou 570 (ZLY570) and Huazheyou 261 (HZY261), across different ecological regions and agronomic practices through on-farm research and field experiments. The on-farm research was conducted across nine provinces in southern China in 2021–2023, and field experiments with two sowing dates and six nitrogen treatments were performed in Hunan Province in 2022 and 2023. Results indicated that in both on-farm research and field experiments, both varieties exhibited a high coefficient of variation (CV) in chalky grain rate and chalkiness degree, followed by head rice rate, amylose and protein contents, traits including brown and milled rice rates, and length-to-width ratio revealed a low CV. The chalky grain rate and chalkiness degree of both varieties displayed poor stability, followed by head rice rate and amylose content. In contrast, brown and milled rice rates, length-to-width ratio, and protein content demonstrated high stability in the genotype plus genotype × environment interaction biplot analysis. However, the maximum value of chalky grain rate and chalkiness degree were only 8.43 % and 1.83 % for ZLY570, and 9.12 % and 2.05 % for HZY261, respectively. Both varieties revealed a high range (R) in head rice rate and amylose content, but a low R in protein content. Furthermore, the head rice rate and amylose content varied widely, while protein content showed narrower variability. These results suggest that high-quality hybrid rice exhibits poor stability in terms of head rice rate and amylose content. In contrast, it demonstrates relatively high stability in brown and milled rice rates, length-to-width ratio, chalky grain rate, chalkiness degree, and protein content.

Deep rocks are typically under a true-triaxial stress state. The strength of deep rock is thus dictated by both the direction and magnitude of principal stresses. The formulation of three-dimensional strength criterion for rocks is thus essential for evaluating the stability of deep-buried rock structures. With advancements in true-triaxial experimental instrumentation, several three-dimensional strength criteria have been proposed, necessitating a systematic review and consolidation of these criteria. This review first introduces the concept of three-dimensional stress state. Subsequently, classical strength criteria such as the Mohr-Coulomb Criterion, the Hoek-Brown criterion, and the Drucker-Prager criterion are reiterated. However, these traditional strength criteria inadequately describe rock strength under true-triaxial stress conditions. To better capture the influence of intermediate principal stress, hydrostatic pressure, and Lode angle on rock strength, researchers have revised classical strength criteria. Modified strength criteria and unified strength criteria based on classical formulations are also introduced. Notably, the unified strength criterion incorporates multiple single criteria and demonstrates wider applicability. Furthermore, beyond macroscopic strength criteria, this review also discusses micromechanical strength criteria, where the stress state and crack propagation govern rock mechanical behaviors. This comprehensive review may serve as a valuable source for addressing the problem of deep rock strength in energy extraction and other rock engineering applications.

Background: Since 1990 s, China has witnessed a widespread transition to clean cooking fuels, presenting an opportunity to investigate whether household fuel transition could mitigate obesity risk and reconcile inconsistencies in the literature regarding the association between cooking fuels and obesity. Methods: The China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) is a prospective cohort study covering 12 provinces of China (1989–2015). Participants were classified into persistent cleaner fuel users, fuel transitioners, and persistent polluting fuel users according to self-reported primary cooking fuels. Obesity and central obesity were defined as BMI ≥ 28.0 kg/m2 and waist circumference ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 85 cm in women according to Chinese criteria. Findings: Among 13,032 participants, 3657 (28.06 %) were persistent cleaner fuel users; 5264 (40.39 %) transitioned from using polluting fuels to cleaner fuels after the baseline survey; and 4111 (31.55 %) were persistent polluting fuel users. During the period of follow-up of 9.0 ± 6.8 years, 1248 (9.58 %) participants were classified into the obesity category, and 4703 (36.09 %) into the central obesity category. Persistent polluting fuel users had a significantly higher risk of developing obesity (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.45, 95 %CI: 1.22–1.72) and central obesity (HR: 1.32, 95 %CI: 1.21–1.44), compared to persistent cleaner fuel users. Persistent polluting fuel use was positively associated with developing obesity in women (HR: 1.64, 95 %CI: 1.30–2.06), but not in men. Subgroup analyses showed higher HR of persistent polluting fuel use among individuals aged 18–44 years (HR: 2.04, 95 %CI: 1.62–2.56). In contrast, the transitioners did not exhibit a significantly different risk of developing obesity (HR: 0.94, 95 %CI: 0.80–1.10) compared to persistent cleaner fuel users, which was consistent across different sex, age and urbanicity. Similar trends were observed for developing central obesity. Interpretation: Persistent polluting fuel use increased obesity risk while the obesity risk of the transition to cleaner fuels was similar to persistent use of cleaner fuels. The finding underscores the significance of advocating for the adoption of cleaner fuels as a strategy to mitigate the disease burden associated with obesity.

Based on the solid waste-based modification, green shear-thickening functionalized ballistic composites were prepared. Silica aerosols were obtained from solid waste diatomaceous earth through sol–gel preparation, gel aging, and supercritical drying. The modified silica aerosols acted as the dispersed phase, regulating the green shear-thickening liquid. A comparison was made between the performance of the modified shear-thickening liquid (SG@STF) and traditional shear-thickening liquids. By modifying solid waste based shear thickener (SG@STF) Combined with aramid fabric (AF) to test Ballistic performance. Characterization tests revealed that the rheological properties of SG@STF were significantly enhanced by increasing the volume fraction of the dispersed phase in STF from 50 % to 60 %. This enhancement was attributed to the addition of reactive functional groups on the surface of the silica sol. Yarn pull-out tests demonstrated that SG@STF/AF improved the tensile strength by 120 % compared to AF fabric, thanks to its superior friction properties. Ballistic tests showed that SG@STF increased the ballistic ultimate velocity of AF fabric by 105 %, elevating AF’s ballistic limiting velocity from 51 m/s to 105 m/s. Consequently, SG@STF/AF exhibited superior ballistic properties compared to AF fabric. The doping of SG enhanced the friction between yarns and increased the load-bearing area of the fabrics, thereby improving the ballistic properties of SG@STF/AF and achieving the desired modulation of their ballistic properties.

Summary: X-ray detection is crucial across various sectors, but traditional techniques face challenges such as inefficient data transmission, redundant sensing, high power consumption, and complexity. The innovative idea of a retinomorphic X-ray detector shows great potential. However, its implementation has been hindered by the absence of active layers capable of both detecting X-rays and serving as memory storage. In response to this critical gap, our study integrates hybrid perovskite with hydrion-conductive organic cations to develop a groundbreaking retinomorphic X-ray detector. This novel device stands at the nexus of technological innovation, utilizing X-ray detection, memory, and preprocessing capabilities within a single hardware platform. The core mechanism underlying this innovation lies in the transport of electrons and holes within the metal halide octahedral frameworks, enabling precise X-ray detection. Concurrently, the hydrion movement through organic cations endows the device with short-term resistive memory, facilitating rapid data processing and retrieval. Notably, our retinomorphic X-ray detector boasts an array of formidable features, including reconfigurable short-term memory, a linear response curve, and an extended retention time. In practical terms, this translates into the efficient capture of motion projections with minimal redundant data, achieving a compression ratio of 18.06% and an impressive recognition accuracy of up to 98.6%. In essence, our prototype represents a paradigm shift in X-ray detection technology. With its transformative capabilities, this retinomorphic hardware is poised to revolutionize the existing X-ray detection landscape.

Preterm infants face a high risk of various complications, and their gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in health. Delivery modes have been reported to affect the development of gut microbiota in term infants, but its impact on preterm infants remains unclear. Here, we collected fecal samples from 30 preterm infants at five-time points within the first four weeks of life. Employing 16 S rRNA sequencing, principal coordinates analysis, the analysis of similarities, and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, we examined the top dominant phyla and genera, the temporal changes in specific taxa abundance, and their relationship with delivery modes, such as Escherichia-Shigella and Enterococcus based on vaginal delivery and Pluralibacter related to cesarean section. Moreover, we identified particular bacteria, such as Taonella, Patulibacter, and others, whose proportions fluctuated among preterm infants born via different delivery modes at varying time points, as well as the microbiota types and functions. These results indicated the influence of delivery mode on the composition and function of the preterm infant gut microbiota. Importantly, these effects are time-dependent during the early stages of life. These insights shed light on the pivotal role of delivery mode in shaping the gut microbiota of preterm infants and have significant clinical implications for their care and management.

Torsades de Pointes (TdP) is a malignant polymorphic ventricular tachycardia with heart rate corrected QT interval (QTc) prolongation, which may be attributed to congenital and acquired factors. Although various acquired factors for TdP have been summarized, levosimendan administration in complex postoperative settings is relatively uncommon. Timely identification of potential causes and appropriate management may improve the outcome. Herein, we describe the postoperative case of a 56-year-old female with initial normal QTc who accepted the administration of levosimendan for heart failure, suffered TdP, cardiac arrest, and possible Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, further genetically confirmed as long QT syndrome type 1 (LQT1). The patient was successfully treated with magnesium sulfate, atenolol, and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation. There should be a careful evaluation of the at-risk populations and close monitoring of the electrocardiograms, particularly the QT interval, to reduce the risk of near-fatal arrhythmias during the use of levosimendan.

Background: The clinical significance of immune-related antigen CD58 in gliomas remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical importance and possible core related genes of CD58 in gliomas. Methods: Pan-cancer analysis was to observe the association between CD58 and different tumors, glioma RNA sequencing data and clinical sample analyses were used to observe the relationship between CD58 and glioma, shRNA interference models were to observe the impact of CD58 on glioma cell function, and four glioma datasets and two online analysis platforms were used to explore the core related genes affecting the correlation between CD58 and glioma. Results: High CD58 expression was associated with worse prognosis in various tumors and higher malignancy in glioma. Down regulation of CD58 expression was linked to decreased proliferation, increased apoptosis, and reduced metastasis in glioma cells. The pathways involved in CD58-related effects were enriched for immune cell adhesion and immune factor activation, and the core genes were CASP1, CCL2, IL18, MYD88, PTPRC, and TLR2. The signature of CD58 and its core-related genes showed superior predictive power for glioma prognosis. Conclusion: High CD58 expression is correlated with more malignant glioma types, and also an independent risk factor for mortality in glioma. CD58 and its core-related genes may serve as novel biomarkers for diagnosing and treating glioma.

With the increasing lethality of modern weapons, the development of body armor has become increasingly important. The main objective of current research is to make protective gear lighter and increase material ballistic performance. Here, a model ballistic-resistant composite material was produced consisting of a polyurea coating on Kevlar plain weave fabric. The effects of coating location and thickness on the ballistic performance of this aramid fabric was examined using yarn pull-out test, ballistic impact test, and numerical simulation. The results demonstrated that the polyurea coating significantly increased the friction between yarns. The maximum yarn pull-out force of the polyurea-coated fiber composite was 40-fold greater than that of the uncoated fiber. Moreover, the application of the coating on the front side outperformed the rear side in terms of ballistic performance. In particular, the front-side 0.2 mm coating was observed to result in the most considerable ballistic limit improvement, increasing the ballistic limit of a single layer of Kevlar fabric from 90.8 to 143.45 m/s. A high precision mesoscale simulation model was developed to analyze the impact of the polyurea coating on the deformation and damage of the Kevlar fabric. These results will contribute to developing new bullet-proof composite materials for the safety protection of personnel.

In the era of advancing digital transformation, the impact of the digital divide on residents’ financial behavior has garnered considerable attention, yet there exists a gap in understanding its implications for financial advisors. Employing the analytical framework of “access gap-usage gap-utility gap” and utilizing a Probit model with sample selectivity, this paper systematically explores the impacts, heterogeneity, and mechanisms of the three levels of the digital divide on the demand for and engagement with financial advisors among residents in six eastern provinces of China in 2022. Key findings are as follows: (1) The impact of the access gap isn't significantly, whereas the effects of the usage gap and utility gap are significantly negative. This implies that residents’ internet usage itself does not affect the likelihood of seeking and engaging financial advisors, but lower frequency and perceived importance of internet usage decrease the likelihood of seeking and engaging financial advisors. (2) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the inhibitory effects of the usage gap and utility gap are more pronounced in rural households, those with debt, and householders lacking financial education. (3) Mechanism studies uncover that both the usage gap and utility gap diminish residents’ demand for and engagement with financial advisors by weakening social networks and reducing information attention. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the profound impact of digital transformation on financial markets, offering policy suggestions and practical guidance to enhance financial services.

It has been reported that fucoidan plays a beneficial role in type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM). However, it remains obscure if fucoidan has the protective effects on diabetes induced skeletal muscle atrophy. Here, we investigated the effect and mechanism of fucoidan on diabetic muscle atrophy. The results revealed that fucoidan ameliorated the general symptoms of diabetes, alleviated insulin resistance, as well as improved glucose metabolism disorders in vivo and vitro. Moreover, fucoidan also improved the atrophy of skeletal muscle by resisting the reduction of muscle fiber diameter and balance the protein anabolism and catabolism. It is worth noting that these beneficial effects of fucoidan on skeletal muscle atrophy and insulin resistance were abolished by inhibiting PI3K/Akt pathway. Taken together, fucoidan ameliorates diabetic skeletal muscle atrophy at least partially by the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Summary: Jasmonate (JA) is a well-known phytohormone essential for plant response to biotic stress. Recently, a crucial role of JA signaling in salt resistance has been highlighted; however, the specific regulatory mechanism remains largely unknown. In this study, we found that the NUCLEAR FACTOR-Y (NF-Y) subunits NF-YA1, NF-YB2, and NF-YC9 form a trimeric complex that positively regulates the expression of salinity-responsive genes, whereas JASMONATE-ZIM DOMAIN protein 8 (JAZ8) directly interacts with three subunits and acts as the key repressor to suppress both the assembly of the NF-YA1-YB2-YC9 trimeric complex and the transcriptional activation activity of the complex. When plants encounter high salinity, JA levels are elevated and perceived by the CORONATINE INSENSITIVE (COI) 1 receptor, leading to the degradation of JAZ8 via the 26S proteasome pathway, thereby releasing the activity of the NF-YA1-YB2-YC9 complex, initiating the activation of salinity-responsive genes, such as MYB75, and thus enhancing the salinity tolerance of plants.

Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) is a rare lysosomal storage disease characterized by deficient activity of iduronate-2-sulfatase (I2S), leading to pathological accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in tissues. We used iduronate-2-sulfatase knockout (Ids KO) mice to investigate if liver-directed recombinant adeno-associated virus vectors (rAAV8-LSP-hIDSco) encoding human I2S (hI2S) could cross-correct I2S deficiency in Ids KO mouse tissues, and we then assessed the translation of mouse data to non-human primates (NHPs). Treated mice showed sustained hepatic hI2S production, accompanied by normalized GAG levels in somatic tissues (including critical tissues such as heart and lung), indicating systemic cross-correction from liver-secreted hI2S. Brain GAG levels in Ids KO mice were lowered but not normalized; higher doses were required to see improvements in brain histology and neurobehavioral testing. rAAV8-LSP-hIDSco administration in NHPs resulted in sustained hepatic hI2S production and therapeutic hI2S levels in cross-corrected somatic tissues but no hI2S exposure in the central nervous system, perhaps owing to lower levels of liver transduction in NHPs than in mice. Overall, we demonstrate the ability of rAAV8-LSP-hIDSco to cross-correct I2S deficiency in mouse somatic tissues and highlight the importance of showing translatability of gene therapy data from rodents to NHPs, which is critical for supporting translation to clinical development.

Study region: China Study focus: An effective evapotranspiration stress assessment system requires reliable estimates actual evapotranspiration (ETa), and potential evapotranspiration (ETp), and should consider multiple influencing indicators. This study explores the consistency of multiple evaporation reanalysis datasets across mainland China and fuses them with multi-model ensemble method. To address the uncertainty inherent in the traditional evapotranspiration stress index (ESI) that only considers the ETa and ETp relationship, we employ Pearson Correlation Analysis and a Random Forest-based Boruta Algorithm to propose new evapotranspiration stress proxies blending multiple remote sensing indicators, named as MESI-P and MESI-B, respectively. Then, we verified their performance in depicting vegetation production capacity based on Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) and Gross Primary Productivity (GPP). New hydrological insights for the region: The patterns of ETa from GLDAS, GLEAM, and Harvard Dataverse in China show consistent, but their threshold values differ. The synthesized ETa obtained after using a multi-model ensemble (MME) method is more adaptable in China, with a range of 0.45–1485.31 mm and an increase of 11.34 mm/10a. Following the same pattern as GLDAS and CRU, the synthetic ETp experiences an increasing trend (11.24 mm/10a) during 2000–2019. Compared with the traditional ESI, the MESI-P and MESI-B proposed in this study have superior signal convergence with ETa, SIF, and GPP due to the higher correlation coefficients (＞0.95) in China. Furthermore, during the calculation of MESI-B, soil moisture and solar radiation are identified as dominate factor in Northwest and Southern China respectively.

Energy efficiency is a critical problem that drives consideration of smart cities and urban areas' development. Energy security and the smart environment face enormous problems because of the dramatic rise in energy consumption brought on by rising population levels and the widespread use of new data-collecting technologies. Traditional smart grids can be updated with IoT-based smart metering (SM) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technologies by revealing previously hidden information about electrical power by implementing a communication system between utilities and consumers during the power transaction process. The smart distribution and energy consumption in smart city environments are strongly supported by the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Hence, this paper suggests the IoT and AI-assisted Smart Metering System (IoT–AI–SMS) as a new data acquisition equipment for predicting energy consumption in smart cities. The information is taken from Energy Efficiency Datasets to examine smart cities' energy consumption. This research offers a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for load forecasting using smart meter data. This technique allows training a single model with all participating smart meters without exchanging local information. Considering the customers' needs, the model developed scheduled the controllable loads and offered optimal dispatch of distributed generation in the smart grid.

Demyelination is a pathological feature commonly observed in various central nervous system diseases. It is characterized by the aggregation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) in the lesion area, which face difficulties in differentiating into mature oligodendrocytes (OLGs). The differentiation of OPCs requires the presence of Sox10, but its expression decreases under pathological conditions. Therefore, we propose a therapeutic strategy to regulate OPCs differentiation and achieve myelin repair by endogenously loading Sox10 into exosomes. To accomplish this, we generated a lentivirus-armed Sox10 that could anchor to the inner surface of the exosome membrane. We then infected HEK293 cells to obtain exosomes with high expression of Sox10 (exosomes-Sox10, ExoSs). In vitro, experiments confirmed that both Exos and ExoSs can be uptaken by OPCs, but only ExoSs exhibit a pro-differentiation effect on OPCs. In vivo, we administered PBS, Exos, and ExoSs to cuprizone-induced demyelinating mice. The results demonstrated that ExoSs can regulate the differentiation of PDGFRα+ OPCs into APC+ OLGs and reduce myelin damage in the corpus callosum region of the mouse brain compared to other groups. Further testing suggests that Sox10 may have a reparative effect on the myelin sheath by enhancing the expression of MBP, possibly facilitated by the exosome delivery of the protein into the lesion. This endogenously loaded technology holds promise as a strategy for protein-based drugs in the treatment of demyelinating diseases.

Based on 2013–2019 panel data covering 31 provinces and cities in China, this paper uses the entropy weight technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method to measure rural common prosperity (CP). Based on the global and local Moran's I methods, we analyze the dynamic evolutionary characteristics of China's rural CP and the regional differences. Additionally, we use the necessary condition analysis (NCA) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) methods to explore how six antecedents at the technology-organization-environment (TOE) level interact to affect CP. This research finds that, first, China's rural CP showed a fluctuating upward trend, with the highest level of CP in rural areas in the eastern region, followed by the central and western regions. Additionally, the gap between the three gradually narrowed. Second, China's rural CP had ''high-high'' and ''low-low'' agglomeration characteristics, with positive spatial autocorrelation, no transition changes, and strong spatial stability. Third, individual digital economic elements and organizational and environmental elements were not necessary conditions for promoting rural CP. Fourth, the multiple concurrent factors of the digital economy, organizations and the environment constituted three diversified configurations of rural CP, showing that the driving path of rural CP was characterized by ''different paths that lead to the same goal”. Moreover, ''perfect digital facilities'' and ''high entrepreneurial activity'' had a universal role in promoting rural CP. The conclusions of this research hold important theoretical and practical significance for improving China's rural CP.

Diabetes is a common metabolic disease characterized by an imbalance in blood glucose levels. The pathogenesis of diabetes involves the essential role of cytokines, particularly the IL-12 family cytokines. These cytokines, which have a similar structure, play multiple roles in regulating the immune response. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of IL-12 family cytokines in the development of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a result, they hold promise as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of these conditions. This review focuses on the potential of targeting IL-12 family cytokines for diabetes therapy based on their roles in the pathogenesis of both types of diabetes. We have summarized various therapies that target IL-12 family cytokines, including drug therapy, combination therapy, cell therapy, gene therapy, cytokine engineering therapy, and gut microbiota modulation. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of these therapies, we have evaluated their feasibility for clinical application and proposed possible solutions to overcome any challenges. In conclusion, targeting IL-12 family cytokines for diabetes therapy provides updated insights into their potential benefits, such as controlling inflammation, preserving islet β cells, reversing the onset of diabetes, and impeding the development of diabetic complications.

Clinical samples from people with influenza disease have been analyzed to assess the presence and abundance of Defective Viral Genomes (DVGs), but these have not been assessed using the same bioinformatic pipeline. The type of DVG most described for influenza infections (deletion DVGs) differs from the most commonly described DVGs from non-segmented negative stranded viruses (5′ copyback). This could be attributed to either differences between viruses or the tools used to detect and characterize DVGs. Here we analyze several NGS datasets from people infected with different types of influenza virus using the same bioinformatic pipeline. We observe that 5′ copyback DVGs are prevalent in all human clinical samples but not in the cultured samples. To address this discrepancy between clinical and laboratory cultures, we infected cell culture and ferrets with an H5N8 influenza A virus (FLUAV) and analyzed the DVG composition. The results demonstrate that the DVG population is skewed toward 5′ copyback DVGs in the in vivo infections and deletion DVGs in the in vitro infections. This demonstrates that there are differences in vivo genome production and in vitro genome production, and this has implications for how the role of DVGs in clinical disease is studied. Background: Augmentation uretero-enterocystoplasty (AUEC) provides a low-pressure urinary storage capsule that can preserve renal function in patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction for whom conservative treatments have failed. Objective: To summarize the effectiveness and safety of augmentation uretero-enterocystoplasty (AUEC) and evaluate whether it aggravates renal function deterioration in patients with renal insufficiency. Design, setting, and participants: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent AUEC from 2006 to 2021. Patients were grouped according to whether they had normal renal function (NRF) or renal dysfunction (serum creatinine >1.5 mg/dl). Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Follow-up of upper and lower urinary tract function was assessed via review of clinical records, urodynamic data, and laboratory results. Results and limitations: We included 156 patients in the NRF group and 68 in the renal dysfunction group. We confirmed that urodynamic parameters and upper urinary tract dilation were significantly improved for patients after AUEC. Serum creatinine declined during the first 10 mo in both groups and remained stable thereafter. A failure criterion fully considering the anisotropy and hydration of shale is essential for shale formation stability evaluation. Thus, a novel failure criterion for hydration shale is developed by using Jaeger’s shear failure criterion to describe the anisotropy and using the shear strength reduction caused by clay minerals hydration to evaluate the hydration. This failure criterion is defined with four parameters in Jaeger’s shear failure criterion (S1, S2, α and φ), three hydration parameters (k, ωsh and σs) and two material size parameters (d and l0). The physical meanings and determining procedures of these parameters are described. The accuracy and applicability of this failure criterion are examined using the published experimental data, showing a cohesive agreement between the predicted values and the testing results, R2 = 0.916 and AAREP (average absolute relative error percentage) of 9.260%. The error (|Dp|) is then discussed considering the effects of β (angle between bedding plane versus axial loading), moisture content and confining pressure, presenting that |Dp| increases when β is closer to 30°, and |Dp| decreases with decreasing moisture content and with increasing confining pressure. Moreover, |Dp| is demonstrated as being sensitive to S1 and being steady with decrease in the data set when β is 0°, 30°, 45° and 90°.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this experiment was to explore the effects of zinc supplementation in breeding pigeons diet on carcass traits, meat quality, antioxidant capacity and mRNA expressions of myogenic regulatory factors of squabs. A total of 120 healthy White King pigeons were randomly assigned to 5 treatments, each involving 8 replicates. The experiment lasted for 46 d (18-d incubation period of eggs and 28-d growth period of squabs). The 5 groups were 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg/kg zinc addition. Results showed that the 28-d body weight, breast muscle yield, zinc content in crop milk and myogenic factor 6 (MyF6) abundance of breast muscle were linearly increased (P < 0.050), but the abdominal fat yield linearly decreased (P = 0.040) with increasing dietary zinc supplementation. Both the linear (P < 0.050) and quadratic responses (P < 0.001) were observed in copper zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in liver and breast muscle. The 28-d body weight was increased by 90 mg/kg zinc supplementation (P < 0.05), and there is no significant difference between 90 and 120 mg/kg zinc addition. The breast muscle yield, Cu-Zn SOD and T-AOC contents in breast muscle and liver, zinc contents in crop milk and breast muscle, MyF6 mRNA expression in breast muscle were higher (P < 0.05) in the group supplemented with 120 mg/kg zinc than the control. The abdominal fat yield was numerically lowest, and MDA contents in breast muscle and liver were significantly lowest in the group fed 120 mg/kg zinc (P < 0.05). However, the meat quality traits were not affected (P > 0.05) by zinc supplementation, except for shear force. It should be stated dietary zinc supplementation at the level of 120 mg/kg for breeding pigeons increased body weight and breast muscle yield of squabs, which may be associated with the up-regulating MyF6 mRNA expression and antioxidant capacity in liver and breast muscle.

Summary: In glioma modeling, existing organoid protocols lack the ability to replicate glioma cell invasion and interaction with normal brain tissue. Here, we present a protocol for generating in vitro brain disease models using human-induced pluripotent- or embryonic-stem-cell-derived cerebral organoids (COs). We describe steps for forming glioma organoids by co-culturing forebrain organoids with U-87 MG cells. The shear behavior is regarded as the dominant property of rock joints and is dramatically affected by the joint surface roughness. To date, the effect of surface roughness on the shear behavior of rock joints under static or cyclic loading conditions has been extensively studied, but such effect under impact loading conditions keeps unclear. To address this issue, a series of impact shear tests was performed using a novel-designed dynamic experimental system combined with the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The dynamic shear strength, deformability and failure mode of the jointed specimens with various joint roughness coefficients (JRC) are comprehensively analyzed. Results show that the shear strength and shear displacement characteristics of the rock joint under the impact loading keep consistent with those under static loading conditions. However, the temporal variations of shear stress, slip displacement and normal displacement under the impact loading conditions show obviously different behaviors. An elastic rebound of the slip displacement occurs during the impact shearing and its value increases with increasing joint roughness. Two identifiable stages (i.e. compression and dilation) are observed in the normal displacement curves for the rougher rock joints, whereas the joints with small roughness only manifest normal compression displacement. Besides, as the roughness increases, the maximum compression tends to decrease, while the maximum dilation gradually increases. Moreover, the microstructural analysis based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) suggests that the roughness significantly affects the characteristics of the shear fractured zone enclosing the joint surface.

This study aims to investigate the effect of rare earth (RE) elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of bainite/martensite (B/M) bearing steel. For this purpose, GCr15 bearing steels with different RE contents were prepared and analyzed after experiencing B/M heat treatment. The results show that RE addition significantly delays the bainite transformation by reducing grain boundary energy and carbon diffusion rate, leading to a reduction of bainite volume fraction from 27.3% for bearing steel without RE addition to less than 14.5% for RE-treated steels, and the corresponding increase of martensite volume fraction from 39.1% to more than 50.2%. The volume fraction of retained austenite (RA) remains nearly unchanged. Meanwhile, the width of the bainite needles gets refined in RE-treated steels while martensite and RA blocks become bigger. Compared with bearing steel without RE addition, larger RA blocks in RE-treated steels unexpectedly have higher stability due to higher dislocation density and surrounding phases strength. Accompanied by the change of microstructure, the hardness in RE-Treated steels improves slightly, while the fracture toughness dramatically deteriorates which can be directly explained by two mechanical phenomena during toughness test. The one is that the RA in RE-treated steels is harder to transform into martensite and thus consumes less energy; The other one gives that cracks tend to propagate along grain boundaries or martensite interfaces with less energy consumption easily in RE-treated steels instead of breaking off bainite.

The microstructure evolution and precipitation behavior of a multi-component β titanium alloy (namely TB17) were investigated through various characterization methods. The results show that with the increase of the solution temperature, the coarse lamellar α phase (αl) and fine secondary α phase (αs) existed in the original as-forged TB17 alloy decrease. At the same time, the molybdenum equivalent value of the β matrix also decreases gradually, leading to the increase of αs phase during the following aging process. For the aged samples, the micro-strain accumulated in the β matrix resulted from phase transformation strain exhibits an increasing trend as the solution treatment temperature rises, highly depending on the volume fraction of αs phase. When the alloy is subjected to a solution treatment at temperature of 805 °C plus aging, it can achieve a good combination of high strength of 1375 MPa and considerable ductility due to mixed microstructure of suitable amount of micro-scale αl and nano-scale αs precipitates. The strength is further improved by increasing the solution temperature (from α+β to β field), which is attributed to higher volume fraction of fine αs precipitates formed during aging that can effectively hinder dislocation slip and induce micro-strain. Morphological features of the fracture surfaces are also discussed against the different microstructural morphologies, revealing the fracture mechanism of TB17 alloy under different heat treatment conditions. The current work could contribute to a better understanding of phase transformation behavior and strengthening mechanism in TB17 alloy.

In the global context of advocating low carbon and environmental protection, the renewable energy market has developed rapidly. As a means of combating global climate change, renewable energy has sparked interest from private investors as a new investment opportunity. In this paper, the quantile–quantile regression (QQ) method and the quantile causality (QC) method are used to study the influence relationship between the fossil energy futures market and the renewable energy stock market returns at different periods and under different market conditions. Results show that when the market is in a normal state, the fossil energy market and the renewable energy stock market have a weak positive relationship, and the positive impact is in the order of crude oil market > natural gas market > heating oil market. While in a bear market, the influence relationship would be abnormally strengthened or even reversed, showing extreme asymmetry. Furthermore, we find that the influence of the fossil energy market on the renewable energy market shows country heterogeneity, and the impact is more significant for developed countries. Some meaningful implications can be concluded for investors and policy-makers. Firstly, both investors and policy-makers should be more alert to the impact of the petrochemical energy market on the renewable energy market. Secondly, investors should be more alert to the downside market risks and further distinguish the different impacts of the natural gas market and the heating oil market on the renewable energy market when making portfolios. Thirdly, policymakers should take some targeted measures to buffer the negative impact of the renewable energy stock market in petrochemical energy when the market is bearish.

The product of near-infrared radiation reflected by vegetation (NIRv) and PAR (NIRvP) is a promising proxy for the remote estimation of gross primary production (GPP). However, the efficiency of NIRvP in estimating the GPP and its limitations across multiple biomes and climate zones remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the performance and limitations of NIRvP in estimating the GPP in comparison to absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR), solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), and the MOD17A2H GPP product. Overall, the correlation between NIRvP and eddy covariance (EC) GPP was stronger than that of APAR, SIF, and MOD17A2H GPP across most biomes with usually similar seasonal variations in radiation, air temperature (TA), and precipitation. The near-​infrared (NIR) reflectance (ρNIR) and light use efficiency (LUE) exhibited a covarying relationship under these environmental conditions, which suggested that the ρNIR contributed positively to the NIRvP-GPP relationship under such climatic conditions. However, the performance of NIRvP was poor in some biomes and climate zones, which exhibited different variations in the seasonal patterns of radiation, TA, and precipitation. The resulting inconsistencies between ρNIR and LUE implied that the ρNIR contributed negatively to the NIRvP-GPP relationship in these regions. To investigate the antibacterial mechanisms of Nile tilapia, it is necessary to understand the responses of immune-related genes in infected lymphocytes. Usually, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is applied to investigate transcriptional profiling. However, few studies have evaluated stable reference genes for qRT-PCR in Nile tilapia head kidney lymphocytes (HKLs). In this research, we assessed the stability of seven common reference genes, which include 18 S ribosomal RNA (18 s rRNA), beta actin (β-actin), beta-2-microglobulin-like (β-MG), elongation factor 1a (EF1A), Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), Tubulin alpha chain-like (TUBA), and Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (UBE)，in both resting state and several responding states of Nile tilapia HKLs. Results showed that β-MG was the optimum reference gene in both resting state and LTA stimulation state, while GAPDH was the optimum for LPS stimulation. However, no single candidate gene could be employed as the universal reference under all situations. Next, the geNorm and RefFinder tools was applied to access the adequacy of the union of two reference genes, and the results suggested that the combination of β-MG and GAPDH was the best candidate. Finally, the expression profiles of three typical immune-related genes interleukin-1β (IL-1β), transcription factor p65(P65), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) under LPS/LTA situations in HKLs were evaluated via multiple reference genes and single reference gene difference analysis. The findings revealed that TUBA and UBE were incapable of working as reference genes, and the union of two reference genes was better than any sole reference gene. The single-cell RNA-Seq (scRNA-Seq) data of Nile tilapia HKLs confirmed the above results. In conclusion, our data suggest that the combination of β-MG and GAPDH may be the best criterion for qRT-PCR calculation in tilapia HKLs.

Summary: Recent evidences have implicated that SENP3 is a deSUMOylase which possesses neuronal damage effects in cerebral ischemia. However, its role in microglia remains poorly understood. Here, we found that SENP3 was upregulated in the peri-infarct areas of mice following ischemic stroke. Furthermore, knockdown of SENP3 significantly inhibits the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in microglial cells. Mechanistically, SENP3 can bind and then mediated the deSUMOylation of c-Jun, which activated its transcriptional activity, ultimately followed by the activation of MAPK/AP-1 signaling pathway. In addition, microglia-specific SENP3 knockdown alleviated ischemia-induced neuronal damage, and markedly diminished infract volume, ameliorated sensorimotor and cognitive function in animals subjected to ischemic stroke. These results indicated SENP3 functions as a novel regulator of microglia-induced neuroinflammation by activating the MAPK/AP-1 signaling pathway via mediating the deSUMOylation of c-Jun. Interventions of SENP3 expression or its interaction with c-Jun would be a new and promising therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke.

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder leading to cognitive impairment in the elderly, and no effective treatment exists. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that physical therapy and electroacupuncture (EA) effectively improve spatial learning and memory abilities. Nevertheless, the mechanism underlying the effects of EA on AD pathology is largely unexplored. Acupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36) has previously been shown to improve cognitive impairment in AD, but the mechanism is unclear. According to recent studies, EA drives the vagal–adrenal axis from the hindlimb ST 36 acupoint but not from the abdominal Tianshu (ST 25) to curb severe inflammation in mice. This study examined whether ST 36 acupuncture improves cognitive dysfunction in AD model mice by improving neuroinflammation and its underlying mechanism. Methods: Male 5xFAD mice (aged 3, 6, and 9 months) were used as the AD animal model and were randomly divided into three groups: the AD model group (AD group), the electroacupuncture at ST 36 acupoint group (EA-ST 36 group), and the electroacupuncture at ST 25 acupoint group (EA-ST 25 group). Age-matched wild-type mice were used as the normal control (WT) group. EA (10 Hz, 0.5 mA) was applied to the acupoints on both sides for 15 min, 5 times per week for 4 weeks. Motor ability and cognitive ability were assessed by the open field test, the novel object recognition task, and the Morris water maze test. Thioflavin S staining and immunofluorescence were used to mark Aβ plaques and microglia. The levels of NLRP3, caspase-1, ASC, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-18 in the hippocampus were assayed by Western blotting or qRT-PCR. Results: EA at ST 36, but not ST 25, significantly improved motor function and cognitive ability and reduced both Aβ deposition and microglia and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in 5×FAD mice. Conclusion: EA stimulation at ST 36 effectively improved memory impairment in 5×FAD mice by a mechanism that regulated microglia activation and alleviated neuroinflammation by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammatory response in the hippocampus. This study shows that ST 36 may be a specific acupoint to improve the condition of AD patients.

DNA methylation plays an important role in plant growth and development, and in regulating the activity of transposable elements (TEs). Research on DNA methylation-related (DMR) genes has been reported in Arabidopsis, but little research on DMR genes has been reported in Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea, the genomes of which exhibit significant differences in TE content. In this study, we identified 78 and 77 DMR genes in Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea, respectively. Detailed analysis revealed that the numbers of DMR genes in different DMR pathways varied in B. rapa and B. oleracea. The evolutionary selection pressure of DMR genes in B. rapa and B. oleracea was compared, and the DMR genes showed differential evolution between these two species. The nucleotide diversity (π) and selective sweep (Tajima’s D) revealed footprints of selection in the B. rapa and B. oleracea populations. Transcriptome analysis showed that most DMR genes exhibited similar expression characteristics in B. rapa and B. oleracea. This study dissects the evolutionary differences and genetic variations of the DMR genes in B. rapa and B. oleracea, and will provide valuable resources for future research on the divergent evolution of DNA methylation between B. rapa and B. oleracea.

Background: Using polluting cooking fuels is a suggested risk factor for hypertension. Transitioning to clean cooking fuels has occurred widely in China in the past 30 years. This provides an opportunity to examine whether the transition could reduce hypertension risk and to ascertain the inconsistent literature on the relationship between cooking fuels and hypertension prevalence. Methods: Initiated in 1989, the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) enrolled participants from 12 provinces in China. By 2015, nine waves of follow-up have been conducted. Based on self-reported cooking fuels, participants were classified into persistent clean fuel users, persistent polluting fuel users and those who transitioned from polluting fuels to clean fuels. Hypertension was defined as having systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg, or self-reported current use of antihypertension medication. Findings: Among 12,668 participants, 3963 (31.28%) were persistent polluting fuel users; 4299 (33.94%) transitioned to clean fuels; and 4406 (34.78%) were persistent clean fuel users. During the period of follow-up (7.8 ± 6.1 years), hypertension was diagnosed in 4428 participants. Compared to persistent clean fuel users, persistent polluting fuel users had a higher risk for hypertension (hazard ratio [HR] 1.69, 95%CI 1.55–1.85), while those transitioned to clean fuels did not. The effects were consistent by gender and urbanicity, respectively. The HRs for hypertension were 1.99 (95%CI 1.75–2.25), 1.55 (95%CI 1.32–1.81) and 1.36 (95%CI 1.13–1.65) among those persistent polluting fuel users aged 18–44, 45–59 and ≥60 years old, respectively. Interpretation: Transitioning from using polluting fuels to clean fuels prevented an increase in hypertension risk. The finding highlights the importance of promoting the fuel transition as a risk-reduction strategy for reducing the disease burden from hypertension.

After intensive research on the gut-brain axis, intestinal dysbiosis is considered to be one of the important pathways of cognitive decline. Microbiota transplantation has long been thought to reverse the behavioral changes in the brain caused by colony dysregulation, but in our study, microbiota transplantation seemed to improve only behavioral brain function, and there was no reasonable explanation for the high level of hippocampal neuron apoptosis that remained. Butyric acid is one of the short-chain fatty acids of intestinal metabolites and is mainly used as an edible flavoring. It is commonly used in butter, cheese and fruit flavorings, and is a natural product of bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber and resistant starch in the colon, acting similarly to the small-molecule HDAC inhibitor TSA. The effect of butyric acid on HDAC levels in hippocampal neurons in the brain remains unclear. Therefore, this study used rats with low bacterial abundance, conditional knockout mice, microbiota transplantation, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing, and behavioral assays to demonstrate the regulatory mechanism of short-chain fatty acids on the acetylation of hippocampal histones. The results showed that disturbance of short-chain fatty acid metabolism led to high HDAC4 expression in the hippocampus and regulated H4K8ac, H4K12ac, and H4K16ac to promote increased neuronal apoptosis. However, microbiota transplantation did not change the pattern of low butyric acid expression, resulting in maintained high HDAC4 expression in hippocampal neurons with continued neuronal apoptosis. Overall, our study shows that low levels of butyric acid in vivo can promote HDAC4 expression through the gut-brain axis pathway, leading to hippocampal neuronal apoptosis, and demonstrates that butyric acid has great potential value for neuroprotection in the brain. In this regard, we suggest that patients with chronic dysbiosis should pay attention to changes in the levels of SCFAs in their bodies, and if deficiencies occur, they should be promptly supplemented through diet and other means to avoid affecting brain health.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common disease in the world and the first among the causes of human death. Its morbidity and mortality increase annually, but no effective treatment is available. Therefore, new drugs should be developed to treat cardiovascular disease. Gentianella acuta (Michx.) Hulten (G. acuta) is an important Mongolian medicine in China and elicits protective effects on cardiovascular health. In this study, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) combined with network pharmacology was used to screen the main active ingredients and confirm that bellidifolin was one of the main components for the treatment of ischemic heart disease. Then, rat myocardial (H9c2) cells injury model induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in vitro was established to verify the effect of bellidifolin on oxidative stress stimulation, including determination of antioxidant enzyme activity and apoptosis. Transcriptome sequencing, qRT-PCR, and western blot were performed to further verify the antioxidant stress mechanism of bellidifolin. Results showed that bellidifolin pretreatment decreased the rate of apoptosis and the levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Conversely, it increased the contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that bellidifolin caused a protective effect on cardiomyocyte injury. Bellidifolin minimized the H2O2-induced cell injury by activating the PI3K-Akt signal pathway and downregulating glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) and p-Akt1/Akt1. Therefore, this work revealed that G. acuta has a good development prospect as an edible medicinal plant in cardiovascular disease. Its bellidifolin component is a potential therapeutic agent for cardiovascular disease induced by oxidative stress damage.

This work explores the durability of alkali-activated materials exposed to acidic and alkaline environments to analyze and evaluate their applications. The alkali-activated materials of metakaolin and metakaolin-mine tailings were immersed in solutions of different pH values for 90 days, in which the durability of materials was studied. Characterizations include pH, FTIR, XRD, SEM and 29Si NMR measurements. It was found that the alkali-excited materials have good durability in an alkaline environment. A small amount of lye was diluted in the neutral solution, leading to a decrease in the amount of gel and a slight deterioration of the durability of the materials. Moreover, alkali-activated materials were corroded in acidic environments, leading to poor durability because hydrogen ions (H+) attacked N-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels, and production of new sinjarite (CaCl2) mineral phases. This work provides a scientific reference value for the application of alkali-activated materials in daily environment.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of knowledge-based dynamic capabilities in national innovation systems in the achievement of sustainable development goals, employing an empirical approach in the context of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. Based on data from 130 sample countries, we analyzed the impact of knowledge-based dynamic capabilities on the achievement of sustainable development goals using PLS-SEM. In particular, we considered the differences in the impact of knowledge-based dynamic capabilities on the achievement of sustainable development goals at different stages of economic development. The results show that knowledge-based dynamic capabilities have a positive impact on the achievement of sustainable development goals, while their compositional dimensions have a dual impact, both direct and indirect. In addition, knowledge-based dynamic capabilities have different impacts on the achievement of sustainable development goals at different stages of economic development. This indicates that a country's economic development level will affect the relationship between knowledge-based dynamic capabilities and the achievement of sustainable development goals. However, it also means that there is a more complex relationship between these capabilities and the achievement of the goals. This study offers a new perspective for sustainable development research, adds new insights to the theory of linking knowledge-based dynamic capabilities to the achievement of sustainable development goals, and provides a measurement standard for the impact of those capabilities on the goals.

C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) are a group of carbohydrate-binding proteins which function by mediating multiple biological events, including adhesion between cells, the turnover of serum glycoproteins, and the innate immune system's reaction to prospective invaders. However, how CLRs affects bony fish's innate immunity to bacterial infection is ill-defined. Therefore, CD302, a member of the CLRs family, was found in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (OnCD302) and the functions in the immune activities of tilapia against bacterial infection were examined. The OnCD302 consists of a C-type lectin domain, a transmembrane domain, and a deduced protein encoded by 242 amino acids. Besides, the OnCD302 protein has a series of highly conserved amino acid sites with other CD302 proteins. Subcellular localization showed that OnCD302 is located in the cell membrane. Transcriptional level investigation showed that OnCD302 was extensively expressed in all selected organs and had high expression in the liver. The transcriptional levels of OnCD302 are induced by Streptococcus agalactiae and Aeromonas hydrophila in the liver, spleen, head kidney, brain, and intestine. Afterwards, in vitro study revealed that several kinds of pathogens could be bound by the recombinant protein of OnCD302 (rOnCD302). Meanwhile, rOnCD302 could inhibit the growth of S. agalactiae, but had no inhibitory effect on A. hydrophila. However, the agglutinate ability of rOnCD302 to A. hydrophila and S. agalactiae was not observed in this study. Additionally, rOnCD302 reduced the ability of macrophages to phagocytose S. agalactiae and A. hydrophila. Summarily, our results indicated that CD302 get involved in fish immunization activities to bacterial infection.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an extremely harmful pollutant in diesel engine exhaust fumes, which must be controlled and removed effectively. In order to better integrate desulfurization materials into diesel exhaust systems, a new desulfurization powder coating (DeSOx coating) was prepared. The SO2 capture performance and kinetics of the DeSOx coating were subsequently studied. This study used a fixed-bed reactor to test the DeSOx coating SO2 capture performance and conduct kinetic analysis at various temperatures and gas flows. The analysis obtained the kinetic parameters of the activation energy and Arrhenius constant, with the derived rate control equations, under isothermal conditions. The DeSOx coating and filter which were prepared using metal oxide powders, SiO2 colloidal sol, and additives, exhibited an enhanced SO2 capture performance. In this experiment, an MnO2/SiO2/LiOH coating had the best SO2 removal rate and capture capacity at 400 °C. Under a reaction space velocity of 10700 h−1, the MnO2/SiO2/LiOH coating SO2 removal rate was 100% within the first hour of reaction. Under a reaction space velocity of 32000 h−1, the MnO2/SiO2/LiOH coating SO2 capture capacity was 132.7 mgSO2/gmaterial during the second hour of reaction. The SO2 capture conversion rate of the DeSOx coating and filter follows the second-order kinetic mechanism model. For the MnO2/SiO2/LiOH coating, the Arrhenius equation gives an activation energy of 4952 J/mol and the Arrhenius natural logarithmic constant is 8.969 s−1. For the MnO2/SiO2/LiOH filter, the activation energy of the rate constant is 214 J/mol, and the Arrhenius natural logarithmic constant is 3.744 s−1. Therefore, the desulfurization coating is an effective way to remove SO2 pollutants from diesel exhaust gases.

Summary: A planar microwave array device with complex electromagnetic functional reconfigurability is demonstrated by means of phase transition film VO2 to manipulate the electromagnetic distribution. Based on planar patch architecture, the microwave device can switch between antenna array and cascaded filter functions. Furthermore, hybrid EM functions such as cascaded antenna arrays and filters are enabled, themselves with further reconfigurability. Therefore, a single design realizes many mono and hybrid antenna and filter functions, which are determined by the order of the array. For simplicity of demonstration, a 2 × 2 array device working at three reconfigurable center frequency points of 3.1, 3.7, and 4.4 GHz, fully compatible with standard planar CMOS processing. A comprehensive design method is proposed to meet the design requirements of a patch-based antenna array and cascaded filter. Based on the functionally reconfigurable microwave device, the front-end circuit could be recombined to suitable for multifunctional microwave systems.

The factors affecting membrane fouling are very complex. In this study, the membrane fouling process was revealed from the perspective of ion environment changes, which affected the whey protein structure during ultrafiltration. It was found that the concentrations of Ca2+ and Na+ were overall increased and the concentrations of K+, Mg2+ and Zn2+ were decreased at an ultrafiltration time of 11 min, which made more hydrophilic groups buried inside and increased the content of α-helix, leading to more protein aggregation. The relatively higher K+ ratio in retention could lead to an antiparallel β-sheet configuration, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and tryptophan increased, which resulted in more protein aggregation and deposition on the membrane surface at 17 min. When the ion concentration and ratio restored the balance and were close to the initial state in retention, the protein surface tension decreased, and the hydrophilic ability increased at 21–24 min.

Summary: Carbon capture from both stationary emitters and dilute sources is critically needed to mitigate climate change. Carbon dioxide separation methods driven by electrochemical stimuli show promise to sidestep the high-energy penalty and fossil-fuel dependency associated with the conventional pressure and temperature swings. Compared with a batch process, electrochemically mediated carbon capture (EMCC) operating in a continuous flow mode offers greater design flexibility. Therefore, this review introduces key advances in continuous flow EMCC for point source, air, and ocean carbon captures. Notably, the main challenges and future research opportunities for practical implementation of continuous flow EMCC processes are discussed from a multi-scale perspective, from molecules to electrochemical cells and finally to separation systems.
