Some core designs integrate high-enriched fuel and moderator materials to enhance neutron utilization. This combination results in a broad spectrum within the system, posing challenges in resonance calculation. This paper introduces a general framework to realize resonance self-shielding treatment in broad-spectrum fuel lattice problems. The framework consists of three components. First, a new energy group structure is devised to support resonance calculation in the entire energy range and capture spectral transition and thermalization effects during eigenvalue calculation. Second, the subgroup method based on narrow approximation is selected as a universal method to perform resonance calculation. Finally, transport equations for each fissionable region are solved for neutron flux to collapse the fission spectrum. The proposed method is verified against fast, intermediate, and thermal spectrum pin cell problems and an assembly problem featuring a fast-thermal coupled spectrum. Numerical results affirm the accuracy of the proposed method in handling these scenarios, with eigenvalue errors below 154 pcm for pin cell problems and 106 pcm for the assembly problem. The verification results revealed that the proposed method enables accurate resonance self-shielding treatment for broad-spectrum problems.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the sulfate resistance of portland-dolomite cement (PDC) with varying dolomite contents, when exposed to sodium sulfate solution at 5 ℃ and 20 ℃. Visual appearance, expansion, mass change, and compressive strength of PDC mortars were tested, and XRD, FTIR, and SEM analyses were conducted to examine deterioration products and microstructure. Results indicate that at 20 ℃, the incorporation of 10 % dolomite in PDC had a negligible impact on sulfate resistance, whereas higher dolomite replacements of 20 % and 30 % notably diminished it. In contrast, exposure at 5 °C led to more severe deterioration in all PDC samples, regardless of dolomite content, and the higher dolomite content, the poorer resistance to sulfate attack. The increased formation of ettringite and gypsum resulted in reduced sulfate resistance of PDC at 20 ℃. However, at 5 ℃, the presence of dolomite significantly promoted the formation of thaumasite at later stages, which caused initial ettringite and subsequent late-stage thaumasite sulfate attack, ultimately leading to the failure of PDC. The findings suggest that PDC should be carefully considered when used in sulfate-rich environments, particularly at low temperatures.

Background: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released the latest estimates of the global burden of cancer. We present a comparison of cancer profiles between 2020 and 2022, leveraging data from the Global Cancer Statistics (GLOBOCAN). Methods: Cancer incidence and mortality data were sourced from two different years, 2020 and 2022, in the GLOBOCAN database. We tracked changes in age-standardized incidence and mortality rates, as well as estimated numbers of new cancer cases and deaths of the 15 most common cancer types globally and in China between 2020 and 2022. Additionally, we conducted comparisons to assess alterations in the cancer burden and variations in mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) across different regions and countries for both 2020 and 2022. Results: Lung cancer remained the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The new cases of thyroid cancer witnessed a sharp increase in 2022. Conversely, the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths from stomach and esophageal cancer decreased significantly in 2022. The geographic distribution of cancer incidence and mortality across six continents in 2022 largely mirrored that of 2020. Higher Human Development Index (HDI) levels in countries corresponded with elevated rates of cancer incidence and mortality, consistent with the previous year. Among 185 countries or territories, China's age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) ranked 64th and its age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) ranked 68th, aligning with global averages. Lung cancer continued to impose the greatest burden of incidence and mortality. Stomach, breast, and esophageal cancers showed declines in both case counts and ASIR. Noteworthy reductions in both ASMR and absolute mortality numbers were observed in liver, stomach, and esophageal cancers. The global MIR decreased from 0.516 in 2020 to 0.488 in 2022. MIR trends indicated an upward trajectory with decreasing HDI levels in both 2022 and 2020. While Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom demonstrated increasing MIRs, China exhibited the most significant decrease, followed by Russia and the United States. Conclusions: The global landscape of cancer incidence and mortality in 2022 reflects ongoing trends observed in 2020. Cancer burdens vary notably across countries with differing socioeconomic statuses. Decreases in stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer cases and deaths signify progress in cancer control efforts. The decrease in the global MIRs highlights potential improvements in cancer management.

Sprouted wheat wholemeal was reported to enhance the nutritional and sensory properties of cereal products, but few human studies exist. The effect of blending 50 % sprouted wheat wholemeal in a bread recipe on the postprandial glycemic and satiety responses, and sensory-related sensations was investigated in this randomized crossover human study with 12 healthy participants. Capillary blood samples were collected and glycemic response was determined at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 min. Satiety visual analogue scales were given every 30 min. While substituting bread wheat flour with sprouted wheat wholemeal significantly increased the α-amylase activity in the dough (p 0.05). Likewise, participant overall acceptability was not adversely affected. Sprouted wheat wholemeal can be used as a functional ingredient in breadmaking, although it did not, in this study, significantly affect digestibility parameters.

Air blast fireball of the composite explosive is an important way to destroy the target and effectively determines the damage effect. Herein, based on the effect of aluminum powder content on the explosion reaction kinetics of HMX-based aluminized explosives, the cylindrical charges with positive gradient structure (PGS) and negative gradient structure (NGS) were designed and prepared to control the structure and size of air blast fireball. The PGS cylinders exhibited lateral shuttle-shaped flame/fireball and the width of the fireball was 3.901 m, which was increased by about 14% compared with homogeneous cylinders. The NGS cylinders led to the vertical shuttle-shaped flame/fireball that the height of the air blast fireball reached 4.049 m, and had longer durations of the fireball. The numerical fitting results show that the lateral shuttle-shaped flame/fireball and vertical shuttle-shaped flame/fireball gradually changed into spherical-like flame/fireball with an increase from 0 to 30 wt% of outer and inner layer HMX content, respectively. The vertical shuttle flame/fireball gradually changed into a spherical-like flame/fireball with the increase of HMX content. This is a feasible way to regulate the shape and size of the air blast fireball through gradient adjusting the distribution of HMX and Al, which could provide an effective strategy to improve the damage effect.

This paper attempts to reveal the freezing temperature and its influencing factors of heavy metal-contaminated loess by adopting two cooling methods: fast and slow grading. As a result, Lanzhou loess was used as an experimental material to make polluted soil with varying heavy metal concentrations and initial water content. The pollutant elements included Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, Cd, and Pb. The findings demonstrate that: 1) The slow cooling rate causes supercooling, jumping, and a progressive decrease in the temperature of the polluted soil. Different cooling methods have no obvious effect on freezing temperature. Furthermore, the freezing temperature of contaminated soil varies depending on its water content. The impact of increasing water content on freezing temperature is not evident; 2) The freezing temperature of loess decreases with the increase of heavy metal ion content. The freezing temperature of loess polluted by Zn, Ni and Cd ions decreased linearly with the increase of ion content. The influence of cations on the freezing temperature of loess is as follows: Zn2+> Ni2+> Cd2+> Cr3+> Pb2+> Cu2+. The influence order of anions is Cl− > SO42−; 3) The freezing temperature of loess containing heavy metal ions is about equal to the freezing temperature of the corresponding heavy metal solution plus the freezing temperature of loess itself. The freezing temperature of heavy metal-polluted loess follows the temperature superposition principle.

Finding reliable photocatalysts capable of driving reactions using only sunlight is more needed than ever. A variety of strategies to harvest sunlight and convert it into chemical energy have been successfully utilized such as synthesizing nanostructures, using metal nanoparticles, doping, and others. In this work, we discover a facile way to anchor CuS nanoplatelets on 2D MoS2 by the solvothermal method using ethylene glycol (EG) as both a reduction agent and an exfoliating agent of bulk MoS2. Using CuS as a co-catalysis on MoS2 with their huge surface areas, led to improved photocatalytic activity for three different applications including H2 evolution, CO2 reduction, and endosulfan degradation. Specifically, Cu–S@MoS2 3% nanocomposite produced 9.86 μmol g−1 h−1 of H2, 0.48 μmol g−1 h−1 of CO and full decomposition of endosulfan within 6 h. The Cu-loaded MoS2 nanocomposites were thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic (including synchrotron-based spectroscopy) and microscopic methods to understand the formation of Cu–S during the solvothermal process. Moreover, the role of the EG during the synthetic procedure was revealed experimentally and studied theoretically via DFT simulations.

Strong light absorption capacity and effective separation of photogenerated charge are the keys to photocatalytic water decomposition, which is usually solved by constructing heterojunction methods. In this work, a novel n-n interwoven Ni2P/CdIn2S4 S-type heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. After a series of characterization and performance tests, under simulated sunlight irradiation at 6 °C (λ > 420 nm), the hydrogen production of Ni2P/CdIn2S4 composite with the best performance can reach 6 mmol/g/h, which is not only 48 times that of pure CdIn2S4, but also 17.2 times that of the expensive metal Pt (CIS–1Pt). By changing the temperature, the hydrogen production of Ni2P/CdIn2S4 reached 8.7 mmol/g/h at 27.5 °C, while its AQY reached 7.7 % and 6.6 % at 420 nm and 475 nm, respectively. In addition, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was analyzed by band structure and XPS diagram, and it was confirmed that the internal electric field of the S-type heterojunction accelerated the photogenerated charge transition and enhanced the hydrogen evolution ability. This effectively compensated for the limitations of severe carrier recombination and low active sites in CdIn2S4 photocatalysts. Therefore, this work provides some help for the construction of non-precious metal S-type heterojunctions for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

The canonical transient receptor potential channel (TRPC) proteins form Ca2+-permeable cation channels that are involved in various heart diseases. However, the roles of specific TRPC proteins in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury remain poorly understood. We observed that TRPC1 and TRPC6 were highly expressed in the area at risk (AAR) in a coronary artery ligation induced I/R model. Trpc1−/− mice exhibited improved cardiac function, lower serum Troponin T and serum creatine kinase level, smaller infarct volume, less fibrotic scars, and fewer apoptotic cells after myocardial-I/R than wild-type or Trpc6−/− mice. Cardiomyocyte-specific knockdown of Trpc1 using adeno-associated virus 9 mitigated myocardial I/R injury. Furthermore, Trpc1 deficiency protected adult mouse ventricular myocytes (AMVMs) and HL-1 cells from death during hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury. RNA-sequencing-based transcriptome analysis revealed differential expression of genes related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in Trpc1−/− cardiomyocytes. Among these genes, oxoglutarate dehydrogenase-like (Ogdhl) was markedly downregulated. Moreover, Trpc1 deficiency impaired the calcineurin (CaN)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway in AMVMs. Suppression of this pathway inhibited Ogdhl upregulation and ROS generation in HL-1 cells under H/R conditions. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays confirmed NF-κB binding to the Ogdhl promoter. The cardioprotective effect of Trpc1 deficiency was canceled out by overexpression of NF-κB and Ogdhl in cardiomyocytes. In conclusion, our findings reveal that TRPC1 is upregulated in the AAR following myocardial I/R, leading to increased Ca2+ influx into associated cardiomyocytes. Subsequently, this upregulates Ogdhl expression through the CaN/NF-κB signaling pathway, ultimately exacerbating ROS production and aggravating myocardial I/R injury.

Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder has emerged as a vital structural and functional material in ceramic applications owing to its remarkable performance including wear resistance, temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. Agglomeration during the drying process is the other key issue that needs to be resolved, which improving the quality of zirconia powder becomes crucial in reducing industrial expenses. This study focuses on investigating the influence of modern microwave heating technology on the drying kinetics of Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder. The experimental results revealed that the average drying rate of Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder increased with sample water content, microwave heating power, and sample mass. Four kinetic fitting models, namely Page, Wang and Singh, Quadratic Model, and Modified Page, were employed to analyze the experimental data for Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder with a mass of 20 g, initial water content of 7.5%, and the microwave heating power is 480 W. Among these models, the Modified Page model demonstrated the best fit and effectively described the drying kinetics of Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder. The Modified Page model successfully captured the kinetics across varying masses, microwave heating powers, and initial water content. FT-IR spectroscopy was employed to describe the material before and after microwave drying. The results exhibited a significant reduction in water molecule content in the Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder after microwave drying, thus confirming the high efficiency and rapidity of the microwave drying procedure. This research provides comprehensive experimental data and offers a theoretical foundation for the industrial application of microwave-enhanced drying of Y2O3–ZrO2 ceramic powder.

To explore the feature of cancer cells and tumor subclones, we analyzed 101,065 single-cell transcriptomes from 12 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and 92 single cell genomes from one of these patients. We found cancer cells, endothelial cells and stromal cells in tumor tissue expressed much more genes and had stronger cell-cell interactions than their counterparts in normal tissue. We identified copy number variations (CNVs) in each cancer cell and found correlation between gene copy number and expression level in cancer cells at single cell resolution. Analysis of tumor subclones inferred by CNVs showed accumulation of mutations in each tumor subclone along lineage trajectories. We found differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between tumor subclones had two populations: DEGCNV and DEGreg. DEGCNV, showing high CNV-expression correlation and whose expression differences depend on the differences of CNV level, enriched in housekeeping genes and cell adhesion associated genes. DEGreg, showing low CNV-expression correlation and mainly in low CNV variation regions and regions without CNVs, enriched in cytokine signaling genes. Furthermore, cell-cell communication analyses showed that DEGCNV tends to involve in cell-cell contact while DEGreg tends to involve in secreted signaling, which further support that DEGCNV and DEGreg are two regulatorily and functionally distinct categories.

Emerging evidence has indicated that the alterations in gut microbiota and metabolites are associated with cognitive performance. However, whether these associations imply a causal relationship remains to be definitively established. Here, we conducted two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) studies to explore the causal effects of gut microbiota and metabolites on cognitive performance, using large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs). We identified seven positive causalities between host genetic-driven gut microbiota and cognitive performance, including Class Clostridia (p = 0.0002), Order Clostridiales (p = 8.12E-05), Family Rhodospirillaceae (p = 0.042) and Ruminococcustorquesgroup (p = 0.030), Dialister (p = 0.027), Paraprevotella (p = 0.037) and RuminococcaceaeUCG003 (p = 0.007) at the genus level. Additionally, a total of four higher abundance of gut microbiota traits were identified to be negatively related to cognitive performance, including genus Blautia (p = 0.013), LachnospiraceaeFCS020group (p = 0.035), LachnospiraceaeNK4A136group (p = 0.034) and Roseburia (p = 0.00016). Fe–Mn–Al–C austenitic steels have promising prospects for lightweight applications, due to their low density, excellent strength, and ductility. But the specific strength ratio of these alloys are still low as compared to other alloys. Herein, an orthogonal rolling (OR) process was used to improve the mechanical strength of a Fe–28Mn–8Al–1C low-density steel. The effect of this deformation method on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties was studied by means of microscopy techniques, e.g. optic, scanning and transmission electron microscope, electron backscattered diffraction, X-ray diffraction, micro hardness and tensile test measurements. Microstructural characterization results show that OR significantly promotes the activation of multiple slip systems within grains in the material. The development of more uniform deformation microstructure, compared with that that after unidirectional cold rolling to the same strain was mainly due the improvement of the uniformity of strain distribution by rolling deformation in multiple directions. It resulted in an average 84.5 nm sized ultrafine grain structures after 8-pass OR. The tensile and yield strengths were significantly increased to 1813 MPa and 1798 MPa, respectively. Despite of the still-exiting strength-ductility trade-off, a much higher elongation at tensile failure of 9.6% was achieved, compared to only 5.2% of unidirectional cold rolled material. This superior strength and ductility combination was likely promoted by the increased dislocation density and deformation substructures in forms of dislocation cells, and deformation twins induced by OR.

Al2O3–ZrO2 composite ceramic is a significant structural material and functional material, and the preparation of high-quality Al2O3–ZrO2 powder is a key step to meeting practical application requirements. The major factor affecting the quality of Al2O3–ZrO2 powder is the drying effect. This paper uses modern microwave drying technology to dry Al2O3–ZrO2 powder. The result was indicative that the average drying rate increases with initial moisture content, initial mass, and microwave heating power. Four dynamic models were applied to fit the empirical data of Al2O3–ZrO2 powder under different pretreatment conditions, the Modified Page model can precisely delineate the Al2O3–ZrO2 microwave drying procedure. To evaluate the changes in samples before and post-drying, the specimens were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. These results demonstrate that microwaves can accelerate the drying of Al2O3–ZrO2 and improve its dispersion. Fick's second law calculates the effective diffusion coefficient. When the initial moisture content of Al2O3–ZrO2 was 5.6%, the microwave heating power is 560 W, and the initial quality is 15 g, the effective diffusion coefficient of Al2O3–ZrO2 is 0.006361 m2/s. Based on the relevance of the microwave power and activating energy, the activating energy of microwave drying Al2O3–ZrO2 was calculated, which is −34.80 g/W. This paper provides basic study data and theory instructions for microwave drying technology in drying Al2O3–ZrO2 even the drying process in green metallurgy.

As global demand for ecological resources continues to surpass ecosystem capacity, predicting future changes in ecological supply, consumption, and carrying capacity is crucial for informed decision-making regarding sustainable land use and ecological security. This study forecasts ecological carrying states in Nepal, a representative region in the southern Himalayan foothills, from 2020 to 2030. We employ three alternative scenarios from the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway and Representative Concentration Pathway (SSP-RCP): SSP2-RCP4.5 (BAU), SSP1-RCP2.6 (TSS) and SSP5-RCP8.5 (SSS). Our findings indicate a continuous rise in ecological consumption, particularly in densely populated tropical areas such as the hilly region (HR) and Terai region (TR). Under the BAU and SSS scenarios, ecological supply decreases rapidly in these regions. Alarmingly, over one-third of Nepal's districts, mainly in central and eastern HR and TR, are projected to experience overloaded ecological carrying states by 2030. Climate change sensitivity and escalating consumption due to improved living standards and population growth pose significant challenges for these regions to reverse ecological deficits. This study offers a scientific foundation for reconciling the conflict between ecological protection and societal demands, facilitating the preservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems while striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

There are abundant coal resources in the permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Open-pit mining is the primary method for coal extraction due to its simple technology and cost-effectiveness. However, the mining process can lead to degradation in permafrost regions. Underground coal mining has been adopted as an option to minimize the impact on the permafrost environment. However, underground coal mining in permafrost regions, along with ventilation, can disrupt the thermal equilibrium of frozen rocks around the shaft, leading to changes in the permafrost table and the seasonal thawed layer around the shaft. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the temperature field of frozen rocks under mine ventilation. Some researchers focus on the temperature of frozen rocks in respect to constant airflow temperature. In fact, the airflow temperature in the shaft varies related to shaft depth, ground temperature, ventilation amount, and ventilation time. In this study, we utilize field data to construct two numerical models for predicting the temperature regime of frozen rocks. The first model, using the finite difference method, describes airflow temperature in the shaft within permafrost regions, accounting for variations in shaft depth, ground temperature, initial rock temperature, ventilation time, and ventilation amount. A fitting equation is then determined as a third boundary condition. The second model employs the finite element method to solve the heat transfer equation with phase change. The results indicate that the maximum thaw depth of frozen rocks around the shaft of Jiangcang coal mine ranged from 3.25 to 5.3 m at various shaft depths. This maximum thaw depth occurs on September 15th and is correlated with ventilation time, stabilizing after three years. Natural ventilation offers protection to frozen rocks around the shaft, and these results can serve as references for designing support systems in underground mining within permafrost regions.

This paper presents a novel Double-negative (DNG) metamaterial (MM) resonator with a mirror-symmetric configuration, designed to exhibit multiband resonances in the S, C, and X bands. The resonator is fabricated using advanced processing techniques on a Rogers 5880 substrate and features electrodeposited copper. It consists of four equal regions, each containing interconnected split-ring resonators that are connected through a cross-shaped structure to ensure mirror symmetry. The simulation results demonstrate six resonance points at frequencies of 2.45 GHz, 4.27 GHz, 6.86 GHz, 8.98 GHz, 10.69 GHz, and 11.65 GHz. These resonances are characterized by near-zero/negative permeability, negative permittivity, refractive index, and impedance. Furthermore, the cross-polarization effect of incident waves is investigated.Additionally, the potential for tunability of resonance frequencies is explored through a sandwiched configuration of the MM resonator, achieved by modifying the cover of the resonating patch. Moreover, the equivalent circuit model of the proposed MM resonator is in good agreement with practical measurements, validating the simulation results. The new tuning method for MM resonators holds the promise for future sensing applications and wireless communications.

Summary: This study found that the level of neuroepithelial cell-transforming gene 1 protein (NET1) was significantly increased in a mouse cardiac fibrosis model. Moreover, the expression level of NET1 was increased in cardiac fibrosis induced by TGF-β1, suggesting that NET1 was involved in the pathological process of cardiac fibrosis. Overexpression of NET1 promoted β-catenin expression in the nucleus and significantly increased the proliferation and migration of cardiac fibroblasts. NET1 may form a complex with β-catenin through GSK3β. Knockdown of β-catenin alleviated the effects of NET1 overexpression on collagen production and cell migration. In the heart of NET1 knockout mice, NET1 knockout can reduce the expression of β-catenin, α-SMA, and collagen content induced by MI. In conclusion, NET1 may regulate the activation of Wnt/β-catenin and TGF/Smads signaling pathway, promote collagen synthesis in fibroblasts, and participate in cardiac fibrosis. Thus, NET1 may be a potential therapeutic target in cardiac fibrosis.

Objective: The preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score, a comprehensive marker of nutritional and immunological status, has been found to be robust for tumor prognosis prediction. Here, we evaluated the use of HALP in the prognostic prediction of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). Study design: Patients with TSCC were retrospectively recruited from the years 2009–2019. Patient clinicopathological characteristics, along with preoperative blood parameters, were recorded on admission, and the cut-off HALP value was determined by X-tile software. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate the predictive value of HALP for patient overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: A total of 339 TSCC patients were enrolled. The optimal HALP threshold was 56 and the patients were divided into two groups according to their scores. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients in the high-HALP group experienced longer OS (p = 0.007) and DFS (p = 0.006) than those in the low-HALP group. A novel NHC-catalyzed regiodivergent reaction of ynones with trifluoromethyl ketones consisting of Aldol reactions and intermolecular [3 + 2] annulations has been developed. Employing two different NHC catalysts, various tertiary alcohols and dihyrofuranones containing trifluoromethyl can be obtained in moderate to good yields (35 examples, up to 91% yield). This protocol features mild reaction conditions, high efficiency and broad substrates scope, promoting the development of NHC catalysis and transformations of ynones.

The overwhelming impact of complex-phase microstructures to mechanical response in multiphase steels requires accurate constitutive properties of the individual phases. However, precise prediction of individual phase properties to their mechanical response is critical and sophisticated, and commonly requires multiscale characterizations and numerous approximations. In this work, by employing full phase information and semi-empirical analytical models, we accurately predict the yield strength of deformed variants of Ce-modified SAF2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS). High energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HE-SXRD) reveals the phase fractions of major phases along with secondary phases of Cr2N and eutectic CexFey. Average lattice strain/crystallite size of the austenite and ferrite/martensite phases from the measured volume is estimated through the Williamson-Hall method. A unique composite strengthening type analytical model is used to estimate yield strength by taking individual strengthening contributions from all phases, their grain sizes, stored dislocation densities, solid solution, and precipitates. Close agreement between reconstructed and experimental yield strength is observed for several cold and cryogenic rolled SDSS. A combination of HE-SXRD and analytical model offers a time-effective virtual design pathway to engineer high-strength steel.

Despite the common challenge of investigating non-metallic inclusions within ultra-high-strength-steel (UHSS) at sub-micrometer scale via conventional methods, probing nitride inclusions at elevated temperatures is vital for guiding steel’ performance. Herein, an in-situ spectro-microscopic determination using advanced Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) coupled with photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) is employed to explore the local structure and electronic properties of selective h-boron nitride (h-BN) containing inclusions (A1 and A2) embedded within steel matrix. While the variation in the relative intensity of π∗/σ∗ excitonic peaks at spatially different locations refers to the polarization and or thickness effects. Several minute features observed in the 192–195 eV energy range show oxygen (O) substituted nitrogen (N) defects (ON,2N,3N), which are more dominant in A2 inclusion. The observed dominance further explains the relatively high intense π∗ peak in A2 due to increased localization. Weak shoulder on the left side of π∗ peak in both room and high-temperature XAS spectra is ascribed to the interaction between h-BN and the local environment, such as Ca-based inclusion or steel matrix. Defects are commonly found in h-BN, and precise identification of the same is vital as they affect the overall physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Moreover, significant changes in high-temperature B K-edge XAS spectra, such as relative intensity of π∗/σ∗ excitonic peaks at the same location and reduced intensity of defects, suggest the adjusting nature of BN inclusion, complicating their precise prediction and control towards clean steel production.

Summary: Obstructive uropathy from nephrolithiasis remains a leading cause of end-stage kidney disease. Mechanisms of kidney fibrosis after relief of ureteral obstruction represent opportunities for therapeutic intervention. Here, in mouse models of ureteral obstruction, we have combined methods of virus tracing and optogenetic techniques to identify an overactive central pathway in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN)-rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) that determines the fibrotic fate of kidney after relief of the obstruction. The overactive pathway is driven by kidney afferent nerves that activate angiotensin II signaling in RVLM-projecting PVN neurons to drive sympathetic discharge back to the kidney. This causes the kidney to undergo fibrosis with loss of function. Blockade of sympathetic traffic or deletion of AT1a in PVN preserves the structure of the post-obstructed kidney. Human post-obstructed kidneys also demonstrate evidence of increased sympathetic nerve activity associated with a fibrotic outcome. Manipulating these neural elements is a potential treatment strategy.

Summary: Dysregulated amino acid increases the risk for heart failure (HF) via unclear mechanisms. Here, we find that increased plasma tyrosine and phenylalanine levels are associated with HF. Increasing tyrosine or phenylalanine by high-tyrosine or high-phenylalanine chow feeding exacerbates HF phenotypes in transverse aortic constriction and isoproterenol infusion mice models. Knocking down phenylalanine dehydrogenase abolishes the effect of phenylalanine, indicating that phenylalanine functions by converting to tyrosine. Mechanistically, tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS) binds to ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related gene (ATR), catalyzes lysine tyrosylation (K-Tyr) of ATR, and activates the DNA damage response (DDR) in the nucleus. Increased tyrosine inhibits the nuclear localization of YARS, inhibits the ATR-mediated DDR, accumulates DNA damage, and elevates cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Enhancing ATR K-Tyr by overexpressing YARS, restricting tyrosine, or supplementing tyrosinol, a structural analog of tyrosine, promotes YARS nuclear localization and alleviates HF in mice. Our findings implicate facilitating YARS nuclear translocation as a potential preventive and/or interfering measure against HF.

Plasticizers are common additives used to enhance the flexibility and workability of polymer materials. Recent findings suggest a great potential for typical plasticizers being used as rejuvenators to recycle oxidized paving asphalts. This study investigated the rejuvenating effectiveness of two plasticizers via rheological evaluation and explored the underlying mechanism by analytical characterizations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A conventional plasticizer dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and an environmentally friendly tributyl citrate (TBC) were selected given the discrepancies in their molecular structures. Both plasticizers were effective in restoring the rheological performance of the aged asphalt; TBC was relatively more efficient which was attributed to its higher molecular polarity and the formation of hydrogen bonds with the oxidized asphalt molecules. Analyses based on the gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry suggested the capability of the plasticizers in dissociating the oxidized asphalt molecules and improving the molecular mobility. The improved molecular mobility was considered responsible for the reversing effect of the plasticizers, as compared to aging, in terms of widening the relaxation spectrum and broadening the glass transition region. The plasticizers’ dissociating effect was confirmed and visualized in the simulations by inspecting their impacts on the spatial arrangement and distribution of the asphaltenes.

Experiments for simultaneous elimination and detoxification of microgram level of As(Ⅲ) in the presence of micromolar H2O2 and Fe(Ⅱ) which are frequently encountered in natural water were conducted. The results showed that the molar ratio of oxidant to As(III) plays important role in As(III) oxidation under the experimental conditions. The extent of As(Ⅲ) oxidation with single H2O2 or Fe(Ⅱ) ranged from 7.9 % to 60.3 % and 22.2–46.6 %, respectively. Treatments with H2O2/As(Ⅲ) molar ratios in the range 150: 1–750: 1 or Fe(Ⅱ)/As(Ⅲ) molar ratios in the range 37.5: 1–375: 1 were more favor for As(Ⅲ) oxidation respectively, and increasing oxidant concentration did not result in complete As(Ⅲ) oxidation. As(Ⅲ) was completely oxidized and eliminated following the precipitation of ferric hydroxides in 5 reaction minutes when H2O2 and Fe(Ⅱ) coexisted in the reaction system. The interface characterization for the reacted precipitates after the experiment were conducted by using a high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with an EX-350 energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results showed that As(Ⅴ) was the merely arsenic species and As oxide primary situated in the subsurface layer of the reacted precipitates, whereas Fe was more concentrated in the outermost surface layer. Our research showed that H2O2 and Fe(Ⅱ) at natural level may exert significant influence on arsenic mobilization in natural water. Considering the much more toxic of As(Ⅲ) than that of As(Ⅴ), the research also provide us an environmental friendly choice in the elimination and detoxification of microgram As(Ⅲ) in drinking water.

Drug resistance is a major challenge in the treatment of epilepsy. Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) accounts for 30% of all cases of epilepsy and is a matter of great concern because of its uncontrollability and the high burden, mortality rate, and degree of damage. At present, considerable research has focused on the development of predictors to aid in the early identification of DRE in an effort to promote prompt initiation of individualized treatment. While multiple predictors and risk factors have been identified, there are currently no standard predictors that can be used to guide the clinical management of DRE. In this review, we discuss several potential predictors of DRE and related factors that may become predictors in the future and perform evidence rating analysis to identify reliable potential predictors.

ABSTRACT: Familial risk of lung cancer has been widely studied but whether this association holds in non-smoking females is largely unknown. We sought to determine the relationship between a family history of cancer and lung cancer risk among Chinese non-smoking females based on a multi-center prospective population-based cohort study involving 547,218 individuals between 2013 and 2019. A total of 1620 lung cancer cases occurred during a median follow-up of 3.9 years. Summary: Background: Optimal uptake rates of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans are essential for lung cancer screening (LCS) to confer mortality benefits. We aimed to outline the process model of the LCS programme in China, identify the high-risk individuals with low uptake based on a prospective multi-centre population-based cohort, and further explore associated structural characteristics. Methods: A total of 221,955 individuals at high-risk for lung cancer from the National Lung Cancer Screening cohort were included. The logistic regression model was performed to identify the individual characteristics associated with the uptake of LCS, defined as whether the high-risk individual undertook LDCT scans in designated hospitals within six months following the initial risk assessment. The linear regression model was adopted to explore the structural characteristics associated with the uptake rates in 186 communities. Findings: The overall uptake rate was 33·0%. The uptake rate was negatively correlated with the incidence of advanced-stage lung cancer (Pearson's coefficient −0·88, p-value 0·0007). Multivariable regression models found that lower uptake rates were associated with males (OR 0·88, 95%CI 0·85–0·91), current smokers (OR 0·93, 95%CI 0·90–0·96), individuals with depressive symptoms (OR 0·92, 95%CI 0·90–0·94), and the structural characteristics, including longer structural delays in initiating LDCT scans (30–90 days vs. ≤14 days: β −7·17, 95%CI −12·76∼ −1·57; >90 days vs. ≤14 days: β −13·69, 95%CI −24·61∼ −2·76), no media-assisted publicity (β −6·43, 95%CI −11·26∼ −1·60), and no navigation assistance (β −5·48, 95%CI −10·52∼ −0·44). Interpretation: Multifaceted interventions are recommended, which focus on poor-uptake individuals and integrate the ‘assessment-to-timely-screening’ approach to minimise structural delays, media publicity, and a navigation assistance along the centralised screening pathway. With China’s rapid urbanization and socioeconomic development, cultivated land has been experiencing continuous reduction, spatial shift, and ecological degradation in the past few decades, coupled with the decreasing and aging agricultural labor force, thus improving cultivated land utilization efficiency while minimizing associated environmental impacts is one of the major challenges facing China. This study first establishes an index system to access the eco-efficiency of cultivated land use (EECLU) considering both carbon sequestration and carbon emissions, next, employs the Super-SBM model to evaluate the spatial–temporal characteristics of EECLU, then, uses landscape metrics to describe landscape pattern dynamics of cultivated land, and finally conducts panel data analysis to investigate the relationship between landscape pattern changes and the EECLU variations. This framework was applied to Jiangsu Province, a major grain-producing area with a developed economy. The results showed that the average EECLU of the counties in rural Jiangsu from 2000 to 2020 slightly decreased, most counties were in the medium–low efficiency range (0.6–0.8), and Southern Jiangsu generally has the lowest EECLU values while Central Jiangsu has the highest. The total area and the average patch sizes of cultivated land have significantly positive impacts on EECLU, while the shape complexity and patch fragmentation have significantly negative impacts on EECLU. Therefore, comprehensive low-carbon strategies and better management and technology in the agricultural sector are needed to further improve EECLU. On the premise of protecting the total area of cultivated land, larger and more aggregated land patches should be promoted in the land consolidation process, and the cultivated land targeted for occupation or compensation should be able to simplify the overall shape of cultivated land patches.

Objective: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in persons with HIV (PWH). BMD provides information only about bone mineral quantity. Trabecular bone score (TBS) is a noninvasive tool that estimates bone microarchitecture. The aim of this study is to measure BMD and TBS of Chinese PWH after one-year ART. Methods: We designed a retrospective study of adult Chinese PWH. Patients with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan prior to ART initiation, and again 48 weeks later were included. Information regarding demographic and clinical history, HIV treatment history, BMD and TBS were collected. We analyzed differences in BMD and TBS over 48 weeks and associations between key risk factors and changes in BMD and TBS. Results: Our study included 233 ​PWH (mean age ​= ​36.6 ​± ​11.1 years). Before ART initiation, 19.3% of PWH had normal BMD but abnormal TBS. Both BMD and TBS decreased after one-year ART. TDF and LPV/r-containing regimens were associated with greater declines in BMD at different site. Traditional risk factors such as old age, low BMI and female sex were associated with lower baseline TBS. Greater change in TBS over one year was associated with lower BMI and lower baseline CD4+ cell count, but unlike BMD measures, it was not correlated with treatment with TDF and LPV/r in our study population. Conclusions: We present the first longitudinal analysis of change in TBS over 48 weeks compared with BMD among Asian PWH receiving ART. Before ART initiation, approximately 20% of PWH with impaired bone microarchitecture would not have been identified if DXA were used alone to assess for bone damage. Both BMD and TBS decreased after one-year ART. Change in TBS was not associated with different antiretroviral agents. The translational potential of this article: The trabecular microarchitecture measured indirectly by TBS may provide clinicians additional information about bone damage in PWH.

Cardiac dysfunction is a vital complication of endotoxemia (ETM) with limited therapeutic options. Transient receptor potential canonical channel (TRPC)1 was involved in various heart diseases. While, the role of TRPC1 in ETM-induced cardiac dysfunction remains to be defined. In this study, we found that TRPC1 protein expression was significantly upregulated in hearts of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged mice. What’s more, TRPC1 knockdown significantly alleviated LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction and injury. Further myocardial mRNA-sequencing analysis revealed that TRPC1 might participate in pathogenesis of ETM-induced cardiac dysfunction via mediating myocardial apoptosis and autophagy. Data showed that knockdown of TRPC1 significantly ameliorated LPS-induced myocardial apoptotic injury, cardiomyocytes autophagosome accumulation, and myocardial autophagic flux. Simultaneously, deletion of TRPC1 reversed LPS-induced molecular changes of apoptosis/autophagy signaling pathway in cardiomyocytes. Moreover, TRPC1 could promote LPS-triggered intracellular Ca2+ release, subsequent calpain activation and caveolin-1 degradation. Either blocking calpain by PD150606 or enhancing the amount of caveolin-1 scaffolding domain that interacts with TRPC1 by cell-permeable peptide cavtratin significantly alleviated the LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction and cardiomyocytes apoptosis/autophagy. Furthermore, cavtratin could inhibit LPS-induced calpain activation in cardiomyocytes. caveolin-1 could directly interact with calpain 2 both in vivo and in vitro. Importantly, cecal ligation and puncture-stimulated cardiac dysfunction and mortality were significantly alleviated in Trpc1-/- and cavtratin-treated mice, which further validated the contribution of TRPC1-caveolin-1 signaling axis in sepsis-induced pathological process. Overall, this study indicated that TRPC1 could promote LPS-triggered intracellular Ca2+ release, mediate caveolin-1 reduction, and in turn activates calpain to regulate myocardial apoptosis and autophagy, contributing to ETM-induced cardiac dysfunction of mice.

Summary: The suppressive function of regulatory T (Treg) cells is tightly controlled by nutrient-fueled mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activation, yet its dynamics and negative regulation remain unclear. Here we show that Treg-specific depletion of vacuolar protein sorting 33B (Vps33B) in mice results in defective Treg cell suppressive function and acquisition of effector phenotype, which in turn leads to disturbed T cell homeostasis and boosted antitumor immunity. Mechanistically, Vps33B binds with lysosomal nutrient-sensing complex (LYNUS) and promotes late endosome and lysosome fusion and clearance of the LYNUS-containing late endosome/lysosome, and therefore suppresses mTORC1 activation. Vps33B deficiency in Treg cells results in disordered endosome lysosome fusion, which leads to accumulation of LYNUS that causes elevated mTORC1 activation and hyper-glycolytic metabolism. Taken together, our study reveals that Vps33B maintains Treg cell suppressive function through sustaining endolysosomal homeostasis and therefore restricting amino acid-licensed mTORC1 activation and metabolism.

In this study, the carbon fiber reinforced ZrB2-SiC composite ceramic was joined to Ti6Al4V alloy with Ag-Cu eutectic alloy filler at varied holding time and a fixed temperature of 800℃. Interface microstructure and shear strength of brazing joints were studied. The brazed ZSCf ceramics/AgCu/TC4 alloy is endowed with good metallurgical bondings. A typical interfacial structure of joints brazed for 10 min was found as ZSCf/TiC/Ti5Si3/Ag(s,s)/Cu(s,s) + TiC/TiCu/Ti2Cu/(TiC + TiCu)/TC4 alloy. Increase of holding time did not vary the precipitated phase of the joints but decreased thickness of the Ag(s, s) and Cu(s, s) reaction layer and gradually thickened the Ti-Cu reaction layer near the TC4 side. The formation process of reaction products was discussed in detail. The holding time substantially influenced shear strength of the joints. A maximum shear strength of 39 MPa was reached at a brazing time of 20 min.

A typical rare-earth element modified Ce-SAF 2507 super duplex stainless steel was isothermally hot-compressed to reach superior mechanic properties over its pristine and peers. Mechanical, macro- and micro-structural evolutions subjected to hot-modification were studied in detail toward an optimal hot working for the Ce-SAF2507. A dynamic softening phenomenon shows that the increase of hot deformation temperature and decrease of the strain rate were dominated by the dynamic recovery of ferrite at a high strain rate and low deformation temperature. The same phenomenon at a low strain rate but high deformation temperature was ruled by the dynamic recrystallization of austenite. These two processes determined significant phase transformations from austenite to ferrite under higher deformation temperature and strain rate. A hot deformation activation energy Q ∼406 kJ mol−1 was obtained through a unified strain-compensated constitutive equation for Ce-SAF2507. Quantitative grain size refinements further proved the above mechanisms deduced from mechanical and microscopic observations, while structure induced changes of mechanical properties were crosschecked with the microhardness. Insights of microstructure also demonstrated the existences of the Cr2N in both phases, grain boundaries, and α/γ interface. The overall deformation dynamics was explicated based on the structural and quantitative results.

In our previous studies, enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) has been proven to be a key oncogenic driver in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, the regulatory mechanisms on EZH2 remain poorly understood in OSCC. Here, through multi-transcriptomics, bioinformatics analysis, and quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), the co-expression network of long noncoding RNA RC3H2 (RC3H2), microRNA-101-3p (miR-101-3p), and EZH2 were screened and validated as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanism in OSCC. Silencing of RC3H2 inhibited OSCC cell proliferation, colony formation, migration, and invasion in vitro and reduced the expression of EZH2 and H3K27Me3, whereas RC3H2 overexpression significantly promoted OSCC cell growth, colony formation, migration, invasion, and xenograft tumor growth in vivo and increased the expression of EZH2 and H3K27Me3. A fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay verified that RC3H2 was predominately localized to the cytoplasm. RNA pull-down and luciferase activity assays showed that miR-101-3p was physically bound to RC3H2 as well as EZH2, and its inhibitor reversed the inhibitory effect of RC3H2 knockdown on progression of OSCC. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that RC3H2 as completive endogenous RNA sponging miR-101-3p targets EZH2 and facilitates OSCC cells’ malignant behavior.

A set of AgCu/Cu-foam/AgCu/Ti multi-layered composite fillers was designed and employed to braze the Inconel 600 alloy and ZrB2-SiC ceramic. Microstructures, formation mechanism and shear strengths of the joints were investigated in detail with and without the addition of Ti foil. The shear strengths of the brazed joints were improved substantially with the presence of Ti foils. A maximum gain of 150 % was reached from 77 MPa to 198 MPa after introducing the Ti foil and brazing the joint at a 1173 K for 15 min. The mechanical property enhancement is attributed to a newly formed TiC phase, release of residual stress, and barrier effect of Cu foam to inhibit formation of Ti-Ni intermetallic compounds.

Summary: Coordinated expression of cell adhesion and signaling molecules is crucial for brain development. Here, we report that the Caenorhabditis elegans transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) type I receptor SMA-6 (small-6) acts independently of its cognate TGF-β type II receptor DAF-4 (dauer formation-defective-4) to control neuronal guidance. SMA-6 directs neuronal development from the hypodermis through interactions with three, orphan, TGF-β ligands. Intracellular signaling downstream of SMA-6 limits expression of NLR-1, an essential Neurexin-like cell adhesion receptor, to enable neuronal guidance. Together, our data identify an atypical TGF-β-mediated regulatory mechanism to ensure correct neuronal development.

Summary: The capability to build up stable, switchable catalysts for complex artificial systems that can mimic the responsiveness of biological systems to multiple triggers is highly desirable and challenging. Herein, we engineer such a system by physically locking catalytically active metal clusters (MCs) inside individual cationic molecular organic cages (I-Cages), where the responsive and task-specific counteranions of I-Cages impart MCs with a programmable gating effect. This allows for precise spatial and temporal control over chemical reactions by regulating accessibility of reagents to the MC sites. Following this strategy, we have successfully tailored catalytic activity of a series of model catalysis (e.g., methanolysis of ammonia borane, and the reduction of 4-nitroaniline) by employing light and pH stimuli, as well as their combination, for programmable-activity control.

As displaying many advantages including high specific strength, light weight, energy absorption, etc., porous structures have been widely used in aerospace, medical science, engineering and other fields. In this paper, an adaptive anisotropic porous modeling method is proposed for improving the mechanical performance of 2.5D mechanical parts whilst minimizing weight and maximizing product benefits. The method relies on the Anisotropic Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations (ACVTs) by offsetting closed B-spline curves. To enhance adaptability to a given parts, the finite element analysis (FEA) results of stress field is combined with stress-based weighted random sampling strategy to generate ACVTs according to Riemannian metric. A skin frame is established to improve geometrical quality of porous structure and ACVTs is tailored to be adaptive for concave and Non-zero genus. Besides, a parametric model between the stress tensor distribution and the relative density field is formulated, allowing the size, the distribution and the shape of pores to be controlled by stress mapping. Both the FEA results and the experimental data show that the adaptive anisotropic structures have significant advantages in mechanical properties, topological consistency and connectivity. Additionally, an example of wrench is provided to prove the great potential of the adaptive anisotropic structures in engineering applications.

Environmental cadmium (Cd) exposure can cause several pulmonary diseases. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) involved in the process of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the association between environmental Cd exposure and EMT was unclear in COPD patients. This study aimed to analyze the associations among circulatory Cd, EMT and COPD based on case-control study. Four hundred COPD patients and 400 control subjects were recruited. Circulatory Cd was detected using atomic adsorption spectrometer. MicroRNA-30 (miR-30) was measured by RT-PCR and the markers of pulmonary EMT were evaluated through western blotting. Circulatory Cd concentration was increased and serum miR-30 was decreased in COPD patients. Circulatory Cd was inversely associated with pulmonary function in COPD patients. Moreover, serum miR-30 was gradually decreased in parallel with FEV1 in COPD patients. Meanwhile, there was a negative association between serum miR-30 and circulatory Cd in COPD patients. Further analysis found that E-cadherin, one of epithelial biomarkers, was reduced in lung tissues of COPD patients with higher circulatory Cd. On the contrary, pulmonary N-cadherin, Vimentin and α-SMA, three of mesenchymal biomarkers, were increased in COPD patients with higher circulatory Cd. In vitro experiments revealed that Cd exposure repressed miR-30 levels and promoted EMT in BEAS-2B cells. Our results provide evidence that miR-30 reduction contributing to pulmonary EMT may involve in the process of Cd-induced COPD.

Summary: Osteoglossiformes is a basal clade of teleost, evolving since the Jurassic period. The genomes of Osteoglossiformes species would shed light on the evolution and adaptation of teleost. Here, we established a chromosome-level genome of African arowana. Together with the genomes of pirarucu and Asian arowana, we found that they diverged at ∼106.1 million years ago (MYA) and ∼59.2 MYA, respectively, which are coincident with continental separation. Interestingly, we identified a dynamic genome evolution characterized by a fast evolutionary rate and a high pseudogenization rate in African arowana and pirarucu. Additionally, more transposable elements were found in Asian arowana which confer more gene duplications. Moreover, we found the contraction of olfactory receptor and the expansion of UGT in African arowana might be related to its transformation from carnivore to be omnivore. Taken together, we provided valuable genomic resource of Osteoglossidae and revealed the correlation of biogeography and teleost evolution.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) complicates chronic kidney disease (CKD). We tested the hypothesis that CKD activates a broad reflex response from the kidneys and the white adipose tissue to impair peripheral glucose uptake and investigated the role of salt intake in this process. Methods: 5/6-nephrectomized rats were administered normal- or high-salt for 3 weeks. Conclusions were tested in 100 non-diabetic patients with stage 3–5 CKD. Findings: High-salt in 5/6-nephrectomized rats decreased insulin-stimulated 2-deoxyglucose uptake >25% via a sympathetic nervous system (SNS) reflex that linked the IR to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in brain and peripheral tissues. Salt-loading in CKD enhanced inflammation in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, and enhanced the impairment of insulin signaling and Glut4 trafficking. Denervation of the kidneys or adipose tissue or deafferentation of adipose tissue improved IR >40%. In patients with non-diabetic CKD, IR was positively correlated with salt intake after controlling for cofounders (r = 0.334, P = 0.001) and was linked to activation of the RAS/SNS and to impaired glucose uptake in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, all of which depended on salt intake. Interpretation: CKD engages a renal/adipose-cerebral-peripheral sympathetic reflex that activates the RAS/ROS axes to promote IR via local inflammation and impaired Glut4 trafficking that are enhanced by high-salt intake. The findings point to a role for blockade of RAS or α-and-β-adrenergic receptors to reduce IR in patients with CKD. Fund: National Natural Science Foundation of China. The amino acid contents of five floral sources Chinese honeys (jujube, rape, chaste, acacia, and lungan) were measured using reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The results showed that proline was the main amino acid in most of the analyzed samples. Phenylalanine presents at the highest content in chaste honey samples, and the total amino acid contents of chaste honeys were also significantly higher than those of other honey samples. Based on the amino acid contents, honey samples were classified using chemometric methods (cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA)). According to the CA results, chaste honeys could be separated from other honeys, while the remaining samples were correctly grouped together when the chaste honey data were excluded. By using DA, the overall correct classification rate reached 100%. The results revealed that amino acid contents could potentially be used as indicators to identify the botanical origin of unifloral honeys.

Osteoblasts and adipocytes are derived from a common precursor, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Alterations in the normal fate of differentiating MSCs are involved in the development of obesity and osteoporosis. Here, we report that viable motheaten (mev) mice, which are deficient in the SH2-domain-containing phosphatase-1 (SHP1), develop osteoporosis spontaneously. Consistently, MSCs from mev/mev mice exhibit significantly reduced osteogenic potential and greatly increased adipogenic potential. When MSCs were transplanted into nude mice, SHP1-deficient MSCs resulted in diminished bone formation compared with wild-type MSCs. SHP1 was found to bind to GSK3β and suppress its kinase activity by dephosphorylating pY216, thus resulting in β-catenin stabilization. Mice, in which SHP1 was deleted in MSCs using SHP1fl/flDermo1-cre, displayed significantly decreased bone mass and increased adipose tissue. Taken together, these results suggest a possible role for SHP1 in controlling tissue homeostasis through modulation of MSC differentiation via Wnt signaling regulation.

To study the stress, deformation, and seepage pressure during the initial impoundment of the Jinping-I Arch Dam, monitoring analysis and numerical calculation were used in a dam behavior analysis that focused on the working behavior of the dam during the late period of the initial impoundment up to the end of November 2014. The numerical calculation was performed based on feedback analysis of the deformation and stress of the arch dam through inversion of the elastic moduli (E) of the dam body and foundation, using a three-dimensional finite element model for the linear elastic material of the arch dam. The main monitoring indices presented insignificant changes in the late period of the initial impoundment, and the results of feedback analysis were consistent with monitoring results. Analysis results also show that the deformations of the dam body and dam foundation were within the design range; the dam stress distributions were normal, with values lower than the design control criteria; and the seepage flows through the dam body and dam foundation were lower than the design drainage capacity of the deep-well pump house, demonstrating that the Jinping-I Arch Dam was in good working condition, and the initial impoundment had been successfully completed. The results of the working behavior analysis of the Jinping-I hydropower project during the initial impoundment can provide references for safe operation of similar projects.
