The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in 53Ca and 55Ca, populated from 54,56Ca(p,pn) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum l assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)keV in 53Ca and 6000(250)keV in 55Ca indicate a significant l =3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the ν0f7/2 single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the ν0f7/2 orbital in 55Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at Z=28.

Gamma decays were observed in 56Ca and 58Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from 57,59Sc beams at ≈200 MeV/nucleon. For 56Ca, a γ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for 58Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the 21+→0gs+ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for 21+ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the 0f5/2 and 0g9/2 orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic 60Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to 70Ca or even beyond.

States in the N=35 and 37 isotopes 55,57Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from 56,58Sc and 56Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the (p,2p) quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from 56Ca was studied. Excited states in 55K, 55Ca, and 57Ca were established for the first time via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from 56Ca to states in 55K and 55Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in 57Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N=35 to collective excitations at N=37.

The nuclear structure of 51Ar, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using γ-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the γ-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the 50Ar+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of 50Ar. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of 51Ar could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in 51Ar.

We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of 51,53K produced via the 52,54Ca(p,2p) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2+ ground states and 1/2+ first excited states in 51,53K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/21+) - E(3/21+) energy differences towards N = 40. Excited states in the N=40 isotone 62Ti were populated via the 63V(p,2p)62Ti reaction at ∼200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using γ-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 21+→0gs+ and 41+→21+ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed 62Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring 64Cr and 66Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for 62Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N=40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N=40 island of inversion extends down to Z=20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive 60Ca. In this study, we elaborated advanced asymmetric membranes using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a galactomannan (GA) derived from Delonix regia seeds, a blend known for its biocompatibility properties. These membranes, crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA), exhibited remarkable enhancements in various crucial aspects for biomedical applications, in particular provides antibacterial properties. The incorporation of GA leads to the formation of globular regions, enhancing crosslinking and swelling properties. Increasing GA content results in membranes with enhanced biodegradation, reduced mechanical resistance, and increased elongation at break. The chemical composition of these membranes actively stimulates the metabolism of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and to a lesser extent, monocytes, promoting cell proliferation particularly at GA contents between 10 and 20 %. Notably, the membrane containing 20 wt% GA demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects by reducing MCP-1 cytokine secretion without compromising tissue repair capacity, as TGF-ß secretion remains unaffected in human monocytes. Introduction: Paraneoplastic encephalitis (PE) represents a rare but significant complication in patients with testicular cancer (TC). Given the paucity of comprehensive literature on this topic, our review seeks to consolidate current knowledge and provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of PE in the context of TC., Materials and Methods: In adherence to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted from 1950 to April 2024 using PubMed. The search focused on articles where TC was identified as the primary etiology of PE. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine's levels of evidence tool were employed for assessing study quality, and a thematic analysis was conducted to identify trends and patterns., Results: Out of 91 articles identified, 29 met the inclusion criteria, encompassing 5 retrospective chart reviews, 3 case series, and 22 case reports. Findings indicate that PE symptoms can manifest at any stage of TC-before tumor detection, during treatment, or even years posttreatment. A notable observation was the frequent oversight of microscopic testicular tumors in ultrasound imaging, leading to diagnostic delays. The outcomes of PE in the context of TC were diverse, reflecting the heterogeneity of the studies included., Conclusion: PE, although rare, is a critical consideration in patients with TC presenting with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important tool for analysis of deep brain grey matter structures. However, analysis of these structures is limited due to low intensity contrast typically found in whole brain imaging protocols. Herein, we propose a big data registration-enhancement (BDRE) technique to augment the contrast of deep brain structures using an efficient large-scale non-rigid registration strategy. Direct validation is problematic given a lack of ground truth data. Rather, we validate the usefulness and impact of BDRE for multi-atlas (MA) segmentation on two sets of structures of clinical interest: the thalamic nuclei and hippocampal subfields. The experimental design compares algorithms using T1-weighted 3 T MRI for both structures (and additional 7 T MRI for the thalamic nuclei) with an algorithm using BDRE. As baseline comparisons, a recent denoising (DN) technique and a super-resolution (SR) method are used to preprocess the original 3 T MRI. The performance of each MA segmentation is evaluated by the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). BDRE significantly improves mean segmentation accuracy over all methods tested for both thalamic nuclei (3 T imaging: 9.1%; 7 T imaging: 15.6%; DN: 6.9%; SR: 16.2%) and hippocampal subfields (3 T T1 only: 8.7%; DN: 8.4%; SR: 8.6%). We also present DSC performance for each thalamic nucleus and hippocampal subfield and show that BDRE can help MA segmentation for individual thalamic nuclei and hippocampal subfields. Background: Asthma disproportionately affects minority populations and is associated with psychosocial stress such as racial/ethnic discrimination. We aimed to examine the association of perceived discrimination with asthma and poor asthma control in African American and Latino youth., Methods: We included African American (n = 954), Mexican American (n = 1,086), other Latino (n = 522), and Puerto Rican Islander (n = 1,025) youth aged 8 to 21 years from the Genes-Environments and Admixture in Latino Americans study and the Study of African Americans, Asthma, Genes, and Environments. Asthma was defined by physician diagnosis, and asthma control was defined based on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines. Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination was assessed by the Experiences of Discrimination questionnaire, with a focus on school, medical, and public settings. We examined the associations of perceived discrimination with each outcome and whether socioeconomic status (SES) and global African ancestry modified these associations., Results: African American children reporting any discrimination had a 78% greater odds of experiencing asthma (OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.33-2.39) than did those not reporting discrimination. Similarly, African American children faced increased odds of poor asthma control with any experience of discrimination (OR, 1.97; 95% CI, 1.42-2.76) over their counterparts not reporting discrimination. These associations were not observed among Latino children. We observed heterogeneity of the association between reports of discrimination and asthma according to SES, with reports of discrimination increasing the odds of having asthma among low-SES Mexican American youth (interaction P = .01) and among high-SES other Latino youth (interaction P = .04)., Conclusions: Perceived discrimination is associated with increased odds of asthma and poorer control among African American youth. Objective: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an established adjunctive surgical intervention for treating Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms. Both surgical targets, the globus pallidus interna (GPi) and subthalamic nucleus (STN), appear equally beneficial when treating motor symptoms but effects on nonmotor symptoms are not clear. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a common PD complaint. Given prior data in STN-DBS, we aimed to further explore potential benefits in LUTS in both targets., Methods: We performed a prospective, nonblinded clinical trial evaluating LUTS in PD patients in both targets pre and post DBS using validated urologic surveys. Participants were already slated for DBS and target selection predetermined before study entry. LUTS was evaluated using: the American Urological Association (AUA-SI), Quality of Life score (QOL), Overactive Bladder 8 Questionnaire (OAB-q), and Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM)., Results: Of 33 participants, 20 underwent STN DBS and 13 had GPi DBS. Patients demonstrated moderate baseline LUTS. The urologic QOL score significantly improved post DBS (3.24 ± 1.77vs. 2.52 ± 1.30; p = 0.03). Analyzed by target, only the STN showed significant change in QOL (3.20 ± 1.61 vs 2.25 ± 1.33; p = 0.04). There were no other significant differences in urologic scores post DBS noted in either target., Conclusion: In PD patients with moderate LUTS, there were notable improvements in QOL for LUTS post DBS in the total sample and STN target. Background: Obesity is associated with poor asthma control, increased asthma morbidity, and decreased response to inhaled corticosteroids. We hypothesized that obesity would be associated with decreased bronchodilator responsiveness in children and adolescents with asthma. In addition, we hypothesized that subjects who were obese and unresponsive to bronchodilator would have worse asthma control and would require more asthma controller medications., Methods: In the Study of African Americans, Asthma, Genes, and Environments (SAGE II) and the Genes-environments and Admixture in Latino Americans (GALA II) study, two identical, parallel, case-control studies of asthma, we examined the association between obesity and bronchodilator response in 2,963 black and Latino subjects enrolled from 2008 to 2013 using multivariable logistic regression. Using bronchodilator responsiveness, we compared asthma symptoms, controller medication usage, and asthma exacerbations between nonobese (< 95th% BMI) and obese (≥ 95th% BMI) subjects., Results: The odds of being bronchodilator unresponsive were 24% (OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03-1.49) higher among obese children and adolescents compared with their not obese counterparts after adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, sex, recruitment site, baseline lung function (FEV1/FVC), and controller medication. Bronchodilator-unresponsive obese subjects were more likely to report wheezing (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.13-1.70), being awakened at night (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.09-1.65), using leukotriene receptor inhibitors (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.05-1.70), and using inhaled corticosteroid with long-acting β2-agonist (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.05-1.78) than were their nonobese counterpart. These associations were not seen in the bronchodilator-responsive group., Conclusions: Obesity is associated with bronchodilator unresponsiveness among black and Latino children and adolescents with asthma. The findings on obesity and bronchodilator unresponsiveness represent a unique opportunity to identify factors affecting asthma control in blacks and Latinos.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) affects 1.5 of every 1,000 caucasian Americans and less frequently affects African Americans. Developmental dysplasia of the hip comprises a spectrum of abnormalities, ranging from laxity of the joint and mild subluxation to fixed dislocation. Early diagnosis of DDH usually leads to low-risk treatment with a harness. Late diagnosis of DDH in children may lead to increased surgical intervention and complications. Late diagnosis of DDH in adults can result in debilitating end-stage degenerative hip joint disease. Screening decreases the incidence of late diagnosis of DDH. Clinical evaluation for DDH should be performed periodically at each well-baby visit until the age of 12 months. There is no consensus on imaging screening for DDH. Consideration for screening with ultrasound is balanced between the benefits of early detection of DDH and the increased treatment and cost factors. In addition, randomized trials evaluating primary ultrasound screening did not find significant decrease in late diagnosis of DDH. In the United States, hip ultrasound is selectively performed in infants with risk factors, such as family history of DDH, breech presentation, and inconclusive findings on physical examination. Ultrasound for DDH should be performed after 2 weeks of age because laxity is common after birth and often resolves itself. A pelvic radiograph can optimally be performed after the age of 4 months, when most infants will have ossification centers of the femoral heads.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) binding sites have been detected in the embryonic brain, but the specific receptor subtypes and biological functions for ANP family ligands therein remain undefined. We now characterize the patterns of gene expression for the natriuretic peptides [ANP, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), type-C natriuretic peptide (CNP)] and their receptors (NPR-A, NPR-B, NPR-C) at several early stages in the embryonic mouse nervous system by in situ hybridization, and begin to define the potential developmental actions using cell culture models of peripheral (PNS) and central nervous systems (CNS). In the CNS, gene transcripts for CNP were present at the onset of neurogenesis, embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5), primarily in the dorsal part of the ventricular zone (VZ) throughout the hindbrain and spinal cord. On E14.5, new CNP signals were observed in the ventrolateral spinal cord where motor neurons reside, and in bands of cells surrounding the spinal cord and hindbrain, localized to dura and/or cartilage primordia. ANP and BNP gene transcripts were not detected in embryonic brain, but were highly abundant in the heart. The CNP-specific receptor (NPR-B) gene was expressed in cells just outside the VZ, in regions where post-mitotic neurons are differentiating. Gene expression for NPR-C, which recognizes all natriuretic peptides, was present in the roof plate of the hindbrain and spinal cord and in bilateral stripes just dorsolateral to the floor plate at E12.5. In the PNS, NPR-B and NPR-C transcripts were highly expressed in dorsal root sensory (DRG) and cranial ganglia beginning at E10.5, with NPR-C signal also prominent in adjoining nerves, consistent with Schwann cell localization. In contrast, NPR-A gene expression was undetectable in neural tissues. To define ontogenetic functions, we employed embryonic DRG and hindbrain cell cultures. The natriuretic peptides potently stimulated DNA synthesis in neuron-depleted as well as neuron-containing Schwann cell cultures and differentially inhibited neurite outgrowth in DRG sensory neuron cultures. CNP also exhibited modest survival-promoting effects for sensory neurons. In marked contrast to PNS effects, the peptides inhibited proliferation of neural precursor cells of the E10.5 hindbrain. Moreover, CNP, alone and in combination with sonic hedgehog (Shh), induced the expression of the Shh target gene gli-1 in hindbrain cultures, suggesting that natriuretic peptides may also modify patterning events in the embryonic brain. These studies reveal widespread, but discrete patterns of natriuretic peptide and receptor gene expression in the early embryonic nervous system, and suggest that the peptides play region- and stage-specific roles during the development of the peripheral and central nervous systems.

Since diseases of the neural retina and optic nerve can result in alteration of biological membranes, this study determines similarities and differences in the membrane phospholipid content of the neural retina, optic nerve head, and optic nerve to serve as baseline data. Neural retina, optic nerve head, and optic nerve were dissected, isolated as 5 sets from 20 rabbits and frozen in liquid N2. Separate pooled-tissue extracts were prepared for each set of tissues and phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) analyses performed. Ten phospholipids were quantified (respective neural retina, optic nerve head, and optic nerve mole % are given for the 5 major phospholipids detected): phosphatidylcholine (PC), 44.61, 27.67, 26.40; PC plasmalogen or alkylacyl PC (CPLIP); phosphatidylinositol (PI); sphingomyelin (SM); phosphatidylserine (PS), 12.63, 14.77, 15.09; phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), 21.21, 9.59, 8.69; PE plasmalogen (EPLAS), 11.07, 30.96, 33.93; an unidentified (unknown) phospholipid (U) at the chemical-shift value of 0.13 ppm; diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG); and phosphatidic acid (PA), 0.46, 2.92, 1.57. Significant differences between the various tissues were determined by the one-way analysis of variance, using a Scheffé range value of P < 0.05. The neural retina in all phospholipids detected except for the uncharacterized (unknown) phospholipid was significantly different from the optic nerve head tissue. The optic nerve head was significantly different from the optic nerve in PC, CPLIP, PE, EPLAS, U, DPG, and PA. The data provide a baseline for studies on pathologically changed neural retina, optic nerve head, and optic nerve.
