Worldwide, aquatic biodiversity is severely threatened as a result of anthropogenic pressures such as pollution, habitat destruction and climate change. Widescale legislation resulted in reduced nutrient- and pesticide loads, and restoration measures allowed modest recovery of freshwater biodiversity. However, from 2010 onwards, recovery in the otherwise unrestored aquatic habitats stagnated. The aim of the present study was therefore to reveal long-term trends in aquatic biodiversity in an anthropogenic landscape and to explain the observed patterns. To this end, over 40 years of biomonitoring data of the indicative taxa group Trichoptera (caddisflies), with an exceptionally high spatial and temporal resolution, was employed. Periods of recovery, stagnation, and decline were delineated using linear and non-linear modelling approaches. Subsequently, species were grouped based on abundance patterns over time and this grouping was used to ascertain species-specific responses to anthropogenic stressors using a trait-based approach. Richness and abundance of all Trichoptera jointly, as well as of the five most abundant and the remaining 136 species, significantly increased from 1980 to significant breakpoints from 2010 onwards, after which these metrics, except the abundances of the 5 most abundant, declined significantly. Trend-based species groupings were not significantly explained by biological traits or ecological preferences. However, Trichoptera species increasing in abundance were less sensitive to climate change and poor water quality, or concerned sensitive species which benefited from restoration measures. Species with stable or declining abundances showed higher sensitivity to climate change. The Trichoptera declining in abundance indicated that conditions in non-protected or restored habitats did not improve due to climate change on top of the other anthropogenic pressures. Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone. To investigate these two hypotheses, we used stable-isotope analysis to determine the food-web structure of lake Markermeer (The Netherlands), a large reservoir lake with armoured shorelines in a former coastal bay area. Contrary to expectation, connectance of the food web in lake Markermeer was comparable to other lakes, while food-chain length was in the higher range. However, the trophic links revealed that numerous macroinvertebrates and fish species in this constructed lake exhibited omnivorous feeding behaviour. Furthermore, in line with our second hypothesis, primary consumers heavily relied on pelagically derived organic matter, while benthic primary production exerted only a minor and seasonal influence on higher trophic levels. Stable-isotope values and the C:N ratio of sediment organic matter in the lake also aligned more closely with phytoplankton than with benthic primary producers. Moreover, terrestrial subsidies of organic matter were virtually absent in lake Markermeer. These findings support the notion that isolation of the lake through shore armouring and the lack of littoral habitats in combination with persistent resuspension of sediments have affected the food web. Objective: New techniques have emerged to aid in preventing inadequate margins in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) surgery, but studies comparing different techniques are lacking. Here, we compared narrow band imaging (NBI) with fluorescence molecular imaging (FMI), to study which intraoperative technique best assesses the mucosal tumour margins., Materials and Methods: NBI was performed in vivo and borders were marked with three sutures. For FMI, patients received 75 mg of unlabelled cetuximab followed by 15 mg cetuximab-800CW intravenously-two days prior to surgery. The FMI borders were defined on the excised specimen. The NBI borders were correlated with the FMI outline and histopathology., Results: Sixteen patients were included, resulting in 31 NBI and 30 FMI measurements. The mucosal border was delineated within 1 mm of the tumour border in 4/31 (13 %) of NBI and in 16/30 (53 %) FMI cases (p = 0.0008), and within 5 mm in 23/31 (74 %) of NBI and in 29/30 (97 %) of FMI cases (p = 0.0048). The median distance between the tumour border and the imaging border was significantly greater for NBI (3.2 mm, range -6.1 to 12.8 mm) than for FMI (0.9 mm, range -3.0 to 7.4 mm; p = 0.028). Submucosal extension and previous irradiation reduced NBI accuracy., Conclusion: Ex vivo FMI performed more accurately than in vivo NBI in mucosal margin assessment, mainly because NBI cannot detect submucosal extension. Background: To investigate associations between annual average air pollution exposures and health, most epidemiological studies rely on estimated residential exposures because information on actual time-activity patterns can only be collected for small populations and short periods of time due to costs and logistic constraints. In the current study, we aim to compare exposure assessment methodologies that use data on time-activity patterns of children with residence-based exposure assessment. We compare estimated exposures and associations with lung function for residential exposures and exposures accounting for time activity patterns., Methods: We compared four annual average air pollution exposure assessment methodologies; two rely on residential exposures only, the other two incorporate estimated time activity patterns. The time-activity patterns were based on assumptions about the activity space and make use of available external data sources for the duration of each activity. Mapping of multiple air pollutants (NO 2 , NO X , PM 2.5 , PM 2.5 absorbance, PM 10 ) at a fine resolution as input to exposure assessment was based on land use regression modelling. First, we assessed the correlations between the exposures from the four exposure methods. Second, we compared estimates of the cross-sectional associations between air pollution exposures and lung function at age 8 within the PIAMA birth cohort study for the four exposure assessment methodologies., Results: The exposures derived from the four exposure assessment methodologies were highly correlated (R > 0.95) for all air pollutants. Similar statistically significant decreases in lung function were found for all four methods. For example, for NO 2 the decrease in FEV 1 was -1.40% (CI; -2.54, -0.24%) per IQR (9.14 μg/m 3 ) for front door exposure, and -1.50% (CI; -2.68, -0.30%) for the methodology which incorporates time activity pattern and actual school addresses., Conclusions: Exposure estimates from methods based on the residential location only and methods including time activity patterns were highly correlated and associated with similar decreases in lung function. Knowledge on the role of seagrass leaf elements and in particular micronutrients and their ranges is limited. We present a global database, consisting of 1126 unique leaf values for ten elements, obtained from literature and unpublished data, spanning 25 different seagrass species from 28 countries. The overall order of average element values in seagrass leaves was Na>K>Ca>Mg>S>Fe>Al>Si>Mn>Zn. Although we observed differences in leaf element content between seagrass families, high intraspecific variation indicated that leaf element content was more strongly determined by environmental factors than by evolutionary history. Early successional species had high leaf Al and Fe content. In addition, seagrass leaf element content also showed correlations with macronutrients (N and P), indicating that productivity also depends on other elements. Expected genomes of additional seagrass species in combination with experiments manipulating (micro)nutrients and environmental drivers might enable us to unravel the importance of various elements to sustain productive and flourishing meadows., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The success of cisplatin-based (Platinol, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, New York, NY, USA) chemotherapy for testicular cancer comes at the price of long-term and late effects related to healthy tissue damage. We assessed and modelled serum platinum (Pt) decay after chemotherapy and determined relationships between long-term circulating Pt levels and known late effects., Patients and Methods: In 99 testicular cancer survivors, treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy, serum and 24-h urine samples were collected during follow-up (1-13 years after treatment). To build a population pharmacokinetic model, measured Pt data were simultaneously analysed, together with cisplatin dose, age, weight and height using the NONMEM software. Based on this model, area under the curve between 1 and 3 years after treatment (Pt AUC1-3 years) was calculated for each patient. Predicted long-term Pt exposure was related to renal function and to late effects of treatment assessed median 9 (3-15) years after chemotherapy., Results: Decay of Pt was best described by a two-compartment model. Mean terminal T1/2 was 3.7 (range 2.5-5.2) years. Pt AUC1-3 years correlated with cumulative cisplatin dose, and creatinine clearance before and 1 year after treatment. Patients with paraesthesia had higher Pt AUC1-3 years (30.9 versus 27.0 µg/l month) compared with those without paraesthesia (P = 0.021). Patients with hypogonadism, elevated LDL-cholesterol levels or hypertension also had higher Pt AUC1-3 years., Conclusions: Renal function before and after cisplatin treatment is an important determinant of long-term Pt exposure. Known long-term effects of testicular cancer treatment, such as paraesthesia, hypogonadism, hypercholesterolaemia and hypertension, are associated with long-term circulating Pt exposure., (© The Author 2015. In remote, tropical areas human influences increase, potentially threatening pristine seagrass systems. We aim (i) to provide a bench-mark for a near-pristine seagrass system in an archipelago in East Kalimantan, by quantifying a large spectrum of abiotic and biotic properties in seagrass meadows and (ii) to identify early warning indicators for river sediment and nutrient loading, by comparing the seagrass meadow properties over a gradient with varying river influence. Abiotic properties of water column, pore water and sediment were less suitable indicators for increased sediment and nutrient loading than seagrass properties. Seagrass meadows strongly responded to higher sediment and nutrient loads and proximity to the coast by decreasing seagrass cover, standing stock, number of seagrass species, changing species composition and shifts in tissue contents. Our study confirms that nutrient loads are more important than water nutrient concentrations. We identify seagrass system variables that are suitable indicators for sediment and nutrient loading, also in rapid survey scenarios with once-only measurements., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Longitudinal studies of cardiac function in long-term childhood cancer survivors are scarce and frequently concern a median follow-up shorter than 13 years., Patients and Methods: Cardiac assessment was performed in 22 doxorubicin-treated long-term survivors of a malignant bone tumour at median 22 years (range 15-27.5) post-treatment. Age at follow-up was 39 years (range 27-59) and cumulative dose of doxorubicin was 360 mg/m(2) (range 225-550). Cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography and (24-h) ECG. The results were compared with those of earlier assessments at 9 years (1992) and 14 years (1997) post-treatment., Results: Systolic dysfunction was found in 27% (9% in 1997; P = 0.02) and diastolic dysfunction in 45% (18% in 1997; P = 0.02). Heart rate variability showed further deterioration compared with earlier results., Conclusions: Twenty-two years after doxorubicin-treatment, bone tumour survivors showed progressive cardiac dysfunction.

Background: There is increasing appreciation of gender differences in COPD but scant data whether risk factors for low lung function differ in men and women. We analysed data from 3 years follow-up in 178 women and 464 men with COPD, participants in the Euroscop Study who were smokers unexposed to inhaled corticosteroids., Methods: Explanatory variables of gender, age, starting age and pack-years smoking, respiratory symptoms, FEV(1)%FVC and FEV(1)%IVC (clinically important measures of airway obstruction), body mass index (BMI), and change in smoking were included in multiple linear regression models with baseline and change in post-bronchodilator FEV(1) as dependent variables., Results: Reduced baseline FEV(1) was associated with respiratory symptoms in men only. Annual decline in FEV(1) was not associated with respiratory symptoms in either men or women, and was 55 ml less in obese men (BMI 30 kg/m(2)) than men having normal BMI, an effect not seen in women. It was 32 ml faster in women with FEV(1)%FVC

Objectives were to examine how the conceptus and recombinant bovine interferon-tau (rbIFN-tau) regulate intracellular components of the PGF(2a) synthetic pathway and to determine if arachidonic acid (AA) is limiting in endometrial tissue of pregnant cows. In Experiment 1, uteri were collected from either cyclic or pregnant dairy cows on Day 17 post-estrus. Intercaruncular explants were dissected and incubated for 60 min to quantify PGF(2a) production in response to oxytocin (10(-6) M), A23187 (10(-5) M), melittin (10(-5) M), and phorbol 12, 13 dibutyrate (PDBu, 10(-6) M). Additional explants from the same cows were incubated for 24 h with and without AA. Oxytocin and A23187 did not stimulate PGF(2a) in explants from either cyclic or pregnant cows. Both PDBu, melittin, and A23187 + melittin stimulated PGF(2a) production in explants of cyclic cows, but not in explants of pregnant cows. The addition of AA to explant cultures for 24 hr did not increase PGF(2a) production during a subsequent 60-min incubation. In Experiment 2, explants were collected from cows that received intrauterine infusions of either BSA (1.9 mg/1.2 ml) or rbIFN-tau (0.2 mg rbIFN-tau + 1.7 mg BSA/1.2 ml) twice a day from Days 14 to 17 of the estrous cycle. Treatments of rbIFN-tau attenuated PGF(2a) secretion induced by in vitro PDBu and A23187 treatments. However, rbIFN-tau treatment in vivo had no effect on the in vitro induction of PGF(2a) secretion by melittin. IFN-tau may regulate the PGF(2a) synthetic pathway by reducing activity of PKC or PKC mediated events.

Background: Previous epidemiological studies have shown acute effects of increased amounts of ambient air pollution on the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in children with respiratory disorders. We investigated whether children with bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and relatively high serum concentrations of total IgE (>60 kU/L, the median value) are susceptible to air pollution., Methods: We collected data from children during three winters (1992-95) in rural and urban areas of the Netherlands. Lower respiratory symptoms (wheeze, attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath), upper respiratory symptoms (sore throat, runny or blocked nose), and peak expiratory flow were recorded daily for 3 months. The acute effects of airborne particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 microm, black smoke, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide were estimated by logistic regression., Findings: 459 (73%) of 632 children had complete data. Of these, 26% had BHR and relatively high (above median) serum total IgE, 36% had no BHR and total IgE of 60 kU/L or less, 15% had BHR and total IgE of 60 kU/L or less, and 23% had a total IgE of more than 60 kU/L but no BHR. In children with BHR and relatively high serum total IgE the prevalence of lower respiratory symptoms increased significantly by between 32% and 139% for each 100 microm/m3 increase in particulate matter, and between 16% and 131% for each 40 microm/m3 increase in black smoke, SO2, or NO2. Decrease in peak expiratory flow of more than 10% in that group was more common with increased airborne particulate matter and black smoke. There were no consistent positive or negative associations between increased air pollution and prevalence of respiratory symptoms or decrease in peak expiratory flow in the other three groups of children., Interpretation: Children with BHR and relatively high concentrations of serum total IgE are susceptible to air pollution. Although our odds ratios were rather low (range 1.16-2.39) the overall effect of air pollution on public health is likely to be substantial since these odds ratios refer to large numbers of people.

Fluid overload may arise during hysteroscopic surgery, caused by absorption of fluid used to distend the uterus. Continuous monitoring of the fluid balance is required to prevent this serious complication. Commercial equipment does not serve this purpose adequately. We describe a simple solution. We weigh the inflow and outflow volumes together on a spring balance; this method provides information about fluid balance, since any fluid lost as spillage or by absorption is reflected by a loss of weight on the balance. The method is simple, accurate, and inexpensive, and the components can be purchased readily.
