Background: Regarding the massive increase of interactive mobile screen household equipment and the omnipresence of television, many recommendations are in favor of a limitation of use, especially among the youngest., Objective: We aimed to evaluate the proportion of parents who report having discussed the subject of their child's exposure to screens during a consultation with a health professional. We also aimed to assess preschool exposure to television and mobile media devices, and to explore parents' views on the benefits and risks of exposing their children under 3 years old., Methods: A questionnaire was administered to parents of children aged 6 months to 3 years in a pediatric emergency ward and several nurseries. This observational, cross-sectional and multicenter study was conducted from January to May 2019., Results: We included 451 responses in the analyses. Only 99 (22.7%; 95% CI: 18.7-26.6) parents reported having discussed their child's exposure to screens with a doctor, on the initiative of the parents themselves for 52 households (53.1%; 95% CI: 43.2-62.9). Feelings of a benefit of screens on child learning concerned 134 (34.5%; 95% CI: 29.8-39.3) parents; 300 (68.5%; 95% CI: 64.1-72.8) said they were sufficiently informed about benefits and risks. In a typical week, 240 (53.7%; 95% CI: 49.1-58.3), 160 (35.8%; 95% CI: 31.3-40.2), and 58 (13.0%; 95% CI: 9.9-16.1) children were exposed at least once a week to television, smartphones, and tablets, respectively., Conclusions: Our study showed that the theme of exposure to screens was hardly addressed by physicians in consultation. Our findings help target prevention messages, including fighting the widespread belief that media are beneficial to child development, emphasizing the importance of screen-free time (eating, going to bed, after waking up) and encouraging support and interaction during exposure in families who choose to expose their children., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None for both authors, (Copyright © 2021 French Society of Pediatrics. Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical technique in which filtered light enhances superficial neoplasms based on their neoangiogenic pattern. The accuracy of NBI can be augmented by combining it with high definition television (HDTV). The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the diagnostic value of NBI in combination with HDTV in evaluation of oral (O) and oropharyngeal (OP) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Between April 2007 and December 2009, we analyzed 96 patients who were divided into 2 groups: Group A included 35 patients previously biopsied and diagnosed with OSCC or OPSCC and subjected to pre- and intraoperative HDTV white light (WL) and HDTV NBI endoscopy; Group B included 61 subjects already treated for OSCC or OPSCC and followed-up with HDTV WL and HDTV NBI. Fourteen of 35 (40%) patients in Group A showed adjunctive findings with NBI compared to standard WL. All of these findings were histologically confirmed. Twelve of 61 (20%) patients in Group B showed positive NBI findings, which were all confirmed by histology. The sensitivity, specificity, positive, negative predictive values, and accuracy for HDTV WL were 51%, 100%, 100%, 87%, and 68%, respectively, whilst for HDTV NBI were 96%, 100%, 100%, 93%, and 97%, respectively. Overall, 26 of 96 (27%) patients had a diagnostic advantage in applying NBI and HDTV: 6 patients received a diagnosis of recurrence and 1 of persistence after previous treatments; 5 showed a metachronous tumour; in 4 a synchronous tumour was diagnosed; 9 lesions were upstaged; in 1 patient previously diagnosed with an unknown primary by fine needle aspiration cytology on the neck, an anterior tonsillar pillar cancer was identified., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows television direct-to-consumer (DTC) prescription drug advertisements that do not fully disclose drug risks if the ads include "adequate provision" for dissemination of the drug's approved labeling. This requirement can be met in part by referring consumers to multiple text sources of product labeling. This study was designed to assess the materials to which consumers were referred in 23 DTC television advertisements. SMOG assessments showed that the average reading grade levels were in the high school range for the main body sections of the materials and college-level range for the brief summary sections. The Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) instrument identified specific difficulties with the materials, including content, graphics, layout, and typography features. Stronger plain language requirements are recommended. Health care providers should be aware that patients who ask about an advertised drug might not have the full information required to make an informed decision.

Objective: To determine if the policy recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding television viewing are heeded in an inpatient pediatric setting., Setting: An inner-city academic medical center., Participants: Consecutive sample of 199 pediatric inpatients., Methods: An investigator visited all pediatric inpatient rooms. Observations were made when the patient was present in the room, alert, and awake. The main outcome measure was exposure to inappropriate programming. In accordance with AAP guidelines, we used the established television rating system to code programs as appropriate versus inappropriate for children. We classified G- and PG-rated shows that centered on adult themes or that were not informational, educational, and nonviolent as inappropriate. We tested parental demographics, age of child, time of day, and presence of an adult in the room as possible predictors., Results: Ninety-one percent of the patients had the television turned on. Of these, 53% were tuned to inappropriate programming. Exposure to inappropriate programming did not differ by parental ethnicity, language, or education. Exposure was highest for infants and toddlers as compared with children or adolescents (74% vs 40% vs 52%, P =.001); it did not vary by time of day. Exposure was higher when an adult was present in the room (58% vs 42%, P =.05); this effect was most pronounced for adolescents (68% vs 41%, P =.05)., Conclusions: Despite AAP recommendations, hospitalized children are exposed to inappropriate programming, especially when parents are present in the room. Hospital stays may be a unique opportunity to educate parents about the AAP recommendations for television viewing by children.

A wide range of cancer information resources is available to patients and their relatives, who are increasingly acting as independent learners. In order to examine preferences for different types of information and to establish the appropriateness of providing a Web-based cancer information resource (CancerHelp UK) a questionnaire survey was undertaken. Of 258 questionnaires distributed to patients attending for oncology outpatient or general practice appointments, 205 (80%) were suitable for analysis. 74% (95% confidence interval 68% to 80%) of participants wanted as much information as possible. All participants cited people most frequently as a future source of cancer information. All participants frequently cited television as a source of both general and cancer-specific information. Despite a lack of computer experience patients were significantly more likely than other groups to say that they would like to use the Web-based resource. It is suggested that such resources are likely to be increasingly well used, particularly by cancer patients, given the growth in health information on the Web and developments in delivery of digital information into the home via television.
