In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13Li and of the excited states of 11Li populated via one-proton removal from 14Be and 12Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11Li and 13Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11Li to 13Li.

The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in 53Ca and 55Ca, populated from 54,56Ca(p,pn) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum l assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)keV in 53Ca and 6000(250)keV in 55Ca indicate a significant l =3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the ν0f7/2 single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the ν0f7/2 orbital in 55Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at Z=28.

The nuclear structure of 66Se, nucleus beyond the N=Z line on the proton-rich side of the valley of stability, was investigated by the neutron knock-out reaction 67Se(12C,X)66Se using a 12C target. The analysis of the singles spectrum of the γ-rays emitted during the de-excitation of the populated low-lying excited states revealed two previously detected (927(4) keV, 1460(32) keV) and three new (744(6) keV, 1210(17) keV, 1661(23) keV) transitions. The 744-keV, the 1210-keV, and the 1460-keV transitions were found to be in coincidence with the one at 927 keV. The spectrum coincident with the 927-keV transition showed a further possible transition at 299(35) keV, which was obscured by significant atomic background in the singles spectrum. This transition might correspond to a peak previously reported at 273(5) keV that could not be assigned to 66Se unambiguously. Based on a comparison of the experimental data to theoretical calculations, four new excited states are proposed which suggest that 66Se exhibits shape coexistence.

Gamma decays were observed in 56Ca and 58Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from 57,59Sc beams at ≈200 MeV/nucleon. For 56Ca, a γ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for 58Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the 21+→0gs+ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for 21+ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the 0f5/2 and 0g9/2 orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic 60Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to 70Ca or even beyond.

Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p,pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

We study isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) densities in Ca40 in comparison with theoretical densities calculated by Skyrme Hatree-Fock (HF) models. The charge symmetry breaking and the charge independence breaking forces are introduced to study the effect on the IV density. The effect of isospin mixing in the ground-state density is examined by using the particle-vibration coupling model taking into account the collective IV giant monopole excitation. We show a clear correlations in the IV density and isospin impurity of Ca40 within the HF and the particle-vibration coupling model. We extract for the first time the experimental information of isospin impurity from the magnitude of IV density.

States in the N=35 and 37 isotopes 55,57Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from 56,58Sc and 56Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the (p,2p) quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from 56Ca was studied. Excited states in 55K, 55Ca, and 57Ca were established for the first time via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from 56Ca to states in 55K and 55Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in 57Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N=35 to collective excitations at N=37.

The nuclear structure of 51Ar, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using γ-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the γ-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the 50Ar+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of 50Ar. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of 51Ar could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in 51Ar.

We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of 51,53K produced via the 52,54Ca(p,2p) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2+ ground states and 1/2+ first excited states in 51,53K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/21+) - E(3/21+) energy differences towards N = 40. Excited states in 63,65,67Mn were studied via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy following knockout reactions from 68Fe. Similar level schemes, consisting of the 11/2−, 9/2−, 7/2− and 5/2g.s.− level sequence, connected by I→I−1 transitions, were established, the first time for 65,67Mn. Their level structures show features consistent with strongly-coupled rotational bands with K=5/2. State-of-the-art shell-model calculations with the modified LNPS effective interaction reproduce the observed levels remarkably well and suggest the dominance of 4-particle-4-hole neutron configurations for all the states. The data on the low-lying excited states of odd-mass 53−67Mn provide a textbook example of nuclear structure evolution from weak coupling through decoupling to strong coupling along a single isotopic chain on the n-rich side of the β stability line. Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of 82Zr and 84Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of ∼10 keV, and the masses of 79Y, 81Zr, and 83Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low α separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr–Nb cycle in the rp-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of 83Nb was determined to be 490(400) keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the p-nucleus 84Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous νp-process simulations. We report on the measurement of new low-lying states in the neutron-rich 81,82,83,84Zn nuclei via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. These include the 41+→21+ transition in 82Zn, the 21+→0g.s.+ and 41+→21+ transitions in 84Zn, and low-lying states in 81,83Zn were observed for the first time. The reduced E(21+) energies and increased E(41+)/E(2+1) ratios at N=52, 54 compared to those in 80Zn attest that the magicity is confined to the neutron number N=50 only. The deduced level schemes are compared to three state-of-the-art shell model calculations and a good agreement is observed with all three calculations. The newly observed 2+ and 4+ levels in 84Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes, which has been incorporated by taking into account the upper sdg orbitals in the Ni78-II and the PFSDG-U models.

Short-lived 46Cr, 50Fe and 54Ni were studied by isochronous mass spectrometry at the HIRFL-CSR facility in Lanzhou. The measured precision mass excesses (ME) of 46Cr, 50Fe and 54Ni are −29471(11) keV, −34477(6) keV and −39278(4) keV, respectively. The superallowed 0+→0+ β-decay Q values were derived to be QEC(Cr46)=7604(11) keV, QEC(Fe50)=8150(6) keV and QEC(Ni54)=8731(4) keV. The values for 50Fe and 54Ni are by one order of magnitude more precise than the adopted literature values. By combining the existing half-lives and branching ratios, we obtained the corrected Ft values to be Ft(Fe50)=3103(70) s and Ft(Ni54)=3076(50) s. The main contribution to the Ft uncertainties is now due to β-decay branching ratios, still, more high-precision measurements of the half-lives, the masses, and especially the branching ratios are needed in order to satisfy the requirements for a stringent CVC test.

Excited states in the N=40 isotone 62Ti were populated via the 63V(p,2p)62Ti reaction at ∼200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using γ-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 21+→0gs+ and 41+→21+ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed 62Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring 64Cr and 66Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for 62Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N=40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N=40 island of inversion extends down to Z=20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive 60Ca. We present an investigation of the structure of 13Be obtained via a kinematically complete measurement of the (p,pn) reaction in inverse kinematics at 265 MeV/nucleon. The relative energy spectrum of 13Be is compared to Transfer-to-the-Continuum calculations which use as structure inputs the overlaps of the 14Be ground-state wave function, computed in a three-body model, with the unbound states of the 13Be residual nucleus. The key role of neutron p-wave orbital in the interpretation of the low-relative-energy part of the spectrum is discussed. A new technique developed for measuring nuclear reactions at low momentum transfer with stored beams in inverse kinematics was successfully used to study isoscalar giant resonances. The experiment was carried out at the experimental heavy-ion storage ring (ESR) at the GSI facility using a stored 58Ni beam at 100 MeV/u and an internal helium gas-jet target. In these measurements, inelastically scattered α-recoils at very forward center-of-mass angles (θcm≤1.5°) were detected with a dedicated setup, including ultra-high vacuum compatible detectors. Experimental results indicate a dominant contribution of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance at this very forward angular range. It was found that the monopole contribution exhausts 79−11+12% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which agrees with measurements performed in normal kinematics. This opens up the opportunity to investigate the giant resonances in a large domain of unstable and exotic nuclei in the near future. Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) are the primary sensory cells that sense the gut luminal environment and secret hormones to regulate organ function. Recent studies revealed that vagal afferent neurons are connected to EECs and relay sensory information from EECs to the brain stem. To date, however, the identity of vagal afferent neurons connected to a given EEC subtype and the mode of their gene responses to its intestinal hormone have remained unknown. Hypothesizing that EEC-associated vagal afferent neurons change their gene expression in response to the microbiota-related extracellular stimuli, we conducted comparative gene expression analyses of the nodose-petrosal ganglion complex (NPG) using specific pathogen-free (SPF) and germ-free (GF) mice. We report here that the Uts2b gene, which encodes a functionally unknown neuropeptide, urotensin 2B (UTS2B), is expressed in a microbiota-dependent manner in NPG neurons. In cultured NPG neurons, expression of Uts2b was induced by AR420626, the selective agonist for FFAR3. Moreover, distinct gastrointestinal hormones exerted differential effects on Uts2b expression in NPG neurons, where cholecystokinin (CCK) significantly increased its expression. The majority of Uts2b-expressing NPG neurons expressed CCK-A, the receptor for CCK, which comprised approximately 25% of all CCK-A-expressing NPG neurons. Selective fluorescent labeling of Uts2b-expressing NPG neurons revealed a direct contact of their nerve fibers to CCK-expressing EECs. This study identifies the Uts2b as a microbiota-regulated gene, demonstrates that Uts2b-expressing vagal afferent neurons transduce sensory information from CCK-expressing EECs to the brain, and suggests potential involvement of UTS2B in a modality of CCK actions., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is innervated by intrinsic enteric neurons and by extrinsic efferent and afferent nerves. The enteric (intrinsic) nervous system (ENS) in most regions of the gut consists of two main ganglionated layers; myenteric and submucosal ganglia, containing numerous types of enteric neurons and glial cells. Axons arising from the ENS and from extrinsic neurons innervate most layers of the gut wall and regulate many gut functions. The majority of ENS cells are derived from vagal neural crest cells (NCCs), which proliferate, colonize the entire gut, and first populate the myenteric region. After gut colonization by vagal NCCs, the extrinsic nerve fibers reach the GI tract, and Schwann cell precursors (SCPs) enter the gut along the extrinsic nerves. Furthermore, a subpopulation of cells in myenteric ganglia undergoes a radial (inward) migration to form the submucosal plexus, and the intrinsic and extrinsic innervation to the mucosal region develops. Here, we focus on recent progress in understanding the developmental processes that occur after the gut is colonized by vagal ENS precursors, and provide an up-to-date overview of molecular mechanisms regulating the development of the intrinsic and extrinsic innervation of the GI tract., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: Platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF) is identical to thymidine phosphorylase (TP), and it can induce angiogenesis, including arteriogenesis, in chronically ischemic canine myocardium. Because its effect on peripheral arterial disease has not been elucidated, we investigated whether overexpression of PD-ECGF/TP could ameliorate chronic limb ischemia in rabbits., Methods: Left femoral arteries were resected from 24 male rabbits. After 10 days, a plasmid vector containing human PD-ECGF/TP complimentary DNA was injected into 10 sites in the adductor muscles. Control groups received either the LacZ plasmid vector or saline vehicle only (n = 8 per group). Blood pressure was measured in the calf before surgery, at the onset of ischemia, 10 days later, and 20 and 30 days after gene transfer. Collateral vessel development and limb perfusion were assessed by angiography, and resected tissues underwent molecular and histologic examination., Results: In the PD-ECGF/TP group, human PD-ECGF/TP messenger RNA and protein were still detected at 30 days after treatment. Calf blood pressure decreased significantly after femoral artery resection in all three groups. It subsequently showed a greater increase in the PD-ECGF/TP group than in either control group, and the difference was significant at 20 days after treatment (PD-ECGF/TP, 97.4 +/- 7.4; LacZ, 58.6 +/- 6.9; saline, 41.3 +/- 3.6). Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated an increased ratio of capillaries and arterioles to muscle fibers in the PD-ECGF/TP group (2.14 +/- 0.13 and 1.51 +/- 0.06), but not in the LacZ group (1.39 +/- 0.04 and 0.71 +/- 0.05) or the saline group (1.34 +/- 0.05 and 0.71 +/- 0.04, P < .01). The angiographic score was higher in the PD-ECGF/TP group (0.96 +/- 0.08) than in the LacZ group (0.50 +/- 0.02) or saline group (0.51 +/- 0.03) at 30 days after gene transfer (P < .01)., Conclusions: This study demonstrated that PD-ECGF/TP gene transfer induced angiogenesis and decreased ischemia in a rabbit hindlimb model by promoting arteriogenesis, suggesting that targeting this gene may be a promising therapeutic strategy for peripheral vascular disease.

Enteric nervous system (ENS) development requires complex interactions between migrating neural-crest-derived cells and the intestinal microenvironment. Although some molecules influencing ENS development are known, many aspects remain poorly understood. To identify additional molecules critical for ENS development, we used DNA microarray, quantitative real-time PCR and in situ hybridization to compare gene expression in E14 and P0 aganglionic or wild type mouse intestine. Eighty-three genes were identified with at least two-fold higher expression in wild type than aganglionic bowel. ENS expression was verified for 39 of 42 selected genes by in situ hybridization. Additionally, nine identified genes had higher levels in aganglionic bowel than in WT animals suggesting that intestinal innervation may influence gene expression in adjacent cells. Strikingly, many synaptic function genes were expressed at E14, a time when the ENS is not needed for survival. To test for developmental roles for these genes, we used pharmacologic inhibitors of Snap25 or vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP)/synaptobrevin and found reduced neural-crest-derived cell migration and decreased neurite extension from ENS precursors. These results provide an extensive set of ENS biomarkers, demonstrate a role for SNARE proteins in ENS development and highlight additional candidate genes that could modify Hirschsprung's disease penetrance.

The caudal-related homeobox transcription factor (Cdx2) plays an important role in intestinal development, differentiation, and homeostasis. However, only a limited number of Cdx2-regulated target genes have been elucidated. To delineate the molecular mechanism regulated downstream of Cdx2, we aimed to define Cdx2-regulated genes. We engineered a rat intestinal epithelial cell line, IEC-6, with minimal endogenous Cdx2 expression to express exogenous Cdx2. The gene expression patterns for Cdx2-inducing cells and control cells were examined using oligonucleotide arrays. In the present study, differential expression of 23 genes was confirmed by a semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis using gene-specific primers. Increased expression of genes was involved in the Notch signaling pathway, xenobiotic metabolism, enzymes associated with tumor suppression, RNA binding protein, receptors, signal transduction, and transcription factors. The wide-ranging collection of such inducing genes suggests to the functions of Cdx2 in cell fate decision and maintenance of intestinal epithelia.

Mediastinal bronchial artery aneurysm is rare but potentially life-threatening, and requires prompt treatment to avert rupture with catastrophic results. A 78-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a benign esophageal tumor, which appeared as an extrinsic, extramucosal filling defect on an esophagogram. Chest computed tomography and selective bronchial arteriography led to a definitive diagnosis of mediastinal bronchial artery aneurysm. Aneurysmectomy and closure of the ostia of both the afferent and efferent bronchial arteries was performed via standard posterolateral thoracotomy. Postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the seventh postoperative day.

Background: This study examined the effects of the depletion of leukocytes and platelets from circulated blood on cardiac function after cardiopulmonary bypass in 37 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting or aortic valve replacement., Methods: Leukocytes and platelets were removed continuously using a blood cell separator, beginning immediately after the start of the operation and ending 1 hour after the release of the aortic cross-clamp in 19 patients (LPD group), but not in the remaining 18 patients (control group). Blood cell counts and levels of thromboxane B2, 6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha, leukocyte elastase, complements C3a and C4a, thrombin-antithrombin III complex, and D-dimer were determined periodically during and after the operation. The cardiac index, the difference between the central and peripheral core temperatures, and the doses of catecholamines and vasodilators required to support the circulation in the early postoperative period also were assessed., Results: Leukocyte and platelet counts and levels of leukocyte elastase, thromboxane B2, thromboxane2/6-ketoprostaglandin F1alpha, thrombin-antithrombin III complex, and D-dimer were significantly lower in the LPD group than in the control group before and after the release of the aortic cross-clamp and during the perioperative period. There were no significant differences in the levels of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha or complements C3a and C4a between the two groups. The catecholamine dose was significantly lower in the LPD group than in the control group (1.1 +/- 2.5 versus 5.0 +/- 5.2 mg/kg, respectively). Fewer patients required the use of nitroprusside as a vasodilator in the LPD group than in the control group (1/19 versus 12/18, respectively)., Conclusions: The depletion of leukocytes and platelets using a blood cell separator prevents the deterioration of cardiac function after cardiac operations using cardiopulmonary bypass.

A novel peptide, H-Gly-Phe-Trp-Asn-Lys-OH, was isolated from eel guts. This peptide, termed eel intestinal pentapeptide (EIPP), enhanced the frequency of the spontaneous contractions and increased the basal tone of the circular muscle of the esophagogastric junction. Furthermore, EIPP enhanced the spontaneous contractions of the longitudinal muscle strips of the gut and stomach, and of the circular muscle of the gastro-intestinal junction. The peptide may be a physiological regulatory peptide in the gastro-intestinal tract of the eel.
