Experiments to stabilize the model system were carried out using a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) unit. The SMES unit suppressed the power oscillation within approximately one wave in the dynamic instability tests, and was able to prevent a generator from stepping out by absorbing the acceleration energy from the generator in the transient stabilizing tests. These results show that an SMES unit can improve the power system stability.
