Abstract

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract

The first search for ultra-rare K+ decays into the π+e+e−e+e− final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018. An upper limit of 1.4×10−8 at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the K+→π+e+e−e+e− decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be (7.2±0.7)×10−11. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of 10−9 for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: K+→π+aa, a→e+e− and K+→π+S, S→A′A′, A′→e+e−.

Abstract

A search for the K+→μ−νe+e+ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10−11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Abstract

Searches for lepton number violating K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−π0e+e+ decays have been performed using the complete dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 5.3×10−11 and 8.5×10−10 are obtained on the decay branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The former result improves by a factor of four over the previous best limit, while the latter result represents the first limit on the K+→π−π0e+e+ decay rate.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports searches for K+→μ+N and K+→μ+νX decays, where N and X are massive invisible particles, using the 2016–2018 data set. The N particle is assumed to be a heavy neutral lepton, and the results are expressed as upper limits of O(10−8) of the neutrino mixing parameter |Uμ4|2 for N masses in the range 200–384 MeV/c2 and lifetime exceeding 50 ns. The X particle is considered a scalar or vector hidden sector mediator decaying to an invisible final state, and upper limits of the decay branching fraction for X masses in the range 10–370 MeV/c2 are reported for the first time, ranging from O(10−5) to O(10−7). An improved upper limit of 1.0×10−6 is established at 90% CL on the K+→μ+ννν¯ branching fraction.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports the first search for K+→π+νν¯ using the decay-in-flight technique, based on a sample of 1.21×1011 K+ decays collected in 2016. The single event sensitivity is 3.15×10−10, corresponding to 0.267 Standard Model events. One signal candidate is observed while the expected background is 0.152 events. This leads to an upper limit of 14×10−10 on the K+→π+νν¯ branching ratio at 95% CL.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton (N) production in K+→e+N decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element |Ue4|2 are established at the level of 10−9 over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144–462 MeV/c2, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The |Ue4|2 range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/c2.

Abstract

In the present work of the PIENU experiment, heavy neutrinos were sought in pion decays π+→μ+ν at rest by examining the observed muon energy spectrum for extra peaks in addition to the expected peak for a light neutrino. No evidence for heavy neutrinos was observed. Upper limits were set on the neutrino mixing matrix |Uμi|2 in the neutrino mass region of 15.7–33.8 MeV/c2, improving on previous results by an order of magnitude. Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports a search for the lepton number violating decays K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−μ+μ+ using a data sample collected in 2017. No signals are observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions of these decays of 2.2×10−10 and 4.2×10−11 are obtained, respectively, at 90% confidence level. These upper limits improve on previously reported measurements by factors of 3 and 2, respectively.

Abstract

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a rare disease in low-incidence countries like Japan, where general physicians have fewer experience with TBM. Despite its proper treatment and early improvement of the condition, TBM often causes paradoxical reactions (PRs), which can lead to severe complications such as stroke. As PRs in the brain are difficult to detect without regular neuroimaging surveillance and have a later onset than in other organs, delayed treatment can be fatal. We report a case of a 54-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative man who presented with TBM and miliary tuberculosis (TB) in an unconscious state. Standard anti-tuberculous therapy with adjunctive systemic high-dose dexamethasone brought rapid clinical and microbiological improvement, which allowed the dexamethasone to be tapered. However, he developed cerebral infarction with left hemiplegia due to a TBM-related PR five months after admission. Therefore, the initial high-dose dexamethasone was again added to the anti-tuberculous drugs, achieving the significant effects on the PR-related lesions. Anti-tuberculous drugs had been administered for 3 years and the dexamethasone was carefully tapered. Nevertheless, enlargement of PR-related lesions in the brain recurred 5 years later. Accordingly, the dose of corticosteroid was again increased, resulting in resolving the lesions. 12. [Pulsatile diameter change of coronary artery lumen estimated by intravascular ultrasound].

Abstract

To analyze the pulsatile movement of coronary arterial walls, intravascular ultrasound was used to measure the diameter changes in the arterial lumen of 32 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD group) and five patients with chest pain but no CAD (control group). Measurements were performed on segments of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery that were angiographically nonstenotic. Following identification of the peak systolic and end-diastolic phases using intra-coronary pressure tracings, the luminal diameters were measured around the center at 4 degrees intervals using a computer-assisted image analyzer. The pulsatile diameter change (dD) and end-diastolic diameter (DD) at each interval were analyzed and compared between the CAD and control groups. Mean DD did not differ significantly between the CAD group (4.53 +/- 0.69 mm) and the control group (4.52 +/- 0.51 mm). In contrast, the mean dD in the CAD group (0.05 +/- 0.18 mm) was significantly lower than that of the control group (0.13 +/- 0.12 mm). The mean maximum and minimum standardized percentage pulsatile diameter changes were -10.6 +/- 6.2% and 16.2 +/- 5.9%, respectively, in the CAD group, and -2.7 +/- 4.6% and 11.7 +/- 1.3%, respectively, in the control group. The mean standard deviation of dD was significantly greater in the CAD group (0.182 +/- 0.05 mm) than in the control group (0.116 +/- 0.04 mm), which indicated dD in CAD patients varied to a greater degree than in control patients. The ratio dD/dP (dP : pulse pressure) was used as an index of vascular compliance at the site of measurement. The mean dD/dP was significantly smaller in the CAD group (1.1 +/- 2.5 x 10(-3) mm/mmHg) than in the control group (4.0 +/- 3.3 x 10(-3) mm/mmHg). Aniso-diametric wall movement in the coronary artery (as indicated by a negative dD during systolic expansion) was enhanced in the CAD group compared to the control group. This was probably caused by the early stages of the arterial sclerotic process as it progressed heterogeneously along the vessel wall. Thus, aniso-diametric movement, which is a functional abnormality of the coronary arterial wall, appears to antedate detectable morphological changes.
