Abstract

Vinasse, the most important liquid residue of the bioethanol production, is often used in fertigation programs. However, this practice may have negative effects on crops if applied without a prior conditioning treatment. In the present study, the efficiency of a fungus-based process as a method for vinasse treatment was evaluated. Phytotoxicity of the residue, before and after biological treatment, was tested on two plant species used for human consumption (Triticum aestivum L. and Raphanus sativus) in order to evaluate the application of vinasse in fertigation. The fungus, identified as Aspergillus sp. V2, showed high tolerance to vinasse, resulting in an optimal growth even when is cultivated on the undiluted residue. Biologically treated vinasse with a cycle of re-inoculation of spores resulted in a COD removal of 52%, whereas pH was increased from 4.4 to 6.1 at the end of treatment. Toxicity studies demonstrated a substantial improvement in the growth parameters (vigor index and fresh weight) of plant species exposed to treated vinasse compared to those exposed to raw residue. These results show that Aspergillus sp. V2 is useful for the recovery of an actual wastewater like sugarcane vinasse, enhancing its fertilizing properties. Fil: Rulli, Macarena María. Abstract

Vinasse is the main residue from bioethanol production. If discharged in water bodies, it can impair the photosynthetic process causing great damage to the environment. However, this wastewater could be considered a by-product and used as a substrate for obtaining value-added products. In the present work, two basidiomycetous fungi were selected based on their ability to decolorize vinasse and to synthesize lignocellulolytic enzymes in agar medium. Selected fungi were identified as Pycnoporus sp. P6 and Trametes sp. T3. In liquid cultures, both fungi demonstrated their capacity to decolorize and remove phenolic compounds from diluted vinasse, with the concomitant production of ligninolytic enzymes, mainly laccases, suggesting the participation of this enzyme in the bioremediation process. This study proposes that Pycnoporus sp. P6 and Trametes sp. T3 could be used in the design of cutting-edge sustainable biotechnological processes to remedy vinasse, simultaneously synthesizing oxidative enzymes, in an environmentally friendly way. 3. Underivatized amino acids detection by anion-exchange chromatography coupled to a nanostructured detector.

Abstract

This work reports the development of a fast and reliable amperometric sensor for the detection of amino acids. The detector was constructed using copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) modified glassy carbon electrode (CuNPs-RGO/GCE) and based on the application of high performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD). Under optimized isocratic HPAEC-PAD conditions (using 40 mmol L -1 NaOH as mobile phase, flow rate of 0.30 mL min -1 and detection potential of 0.45 V vs. Pd/PdO), the linear dynamic ranges of the concentration of amino acids obtained were 0.50-50 µmol L -1 for lysine, 1.0-100 µmol L -1 for alanine, glycine and serine, and 5.0-100 µmol L -1 for leucine. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) obtained ranged from 0.10 (for lysine and leucine) to 0.50 µmol L -1 (for alanine, glycine and serine) and sensitivity varied from 6.1 (for leucine) to 21.5 nA µmol -1 L (for serine). The average recovery percentages ranged from 97% (for glycine) to 102% (for leucine and serine). The results obtained showed that the CuNPs-RGO/GCE has good long-term stability, repeatability and reproducibility; this makes the device suitable for application as an electrochemical detector. The successful application of the proposed method for the analysis of sugarcane vinasse demonstrates its suitability for separation and determination of amino acids in complex matrices., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Biodegradable films are a promising strategy to reduce the environmental impact caused by conventional plastics commonly used in agriculture. This study focused on the production and characterization of Konjac glucomannan (KGM) and alginate (ALG) based films enriched with sugarcane vinasse (VIN), a nutrient-rich wastewater generated in large volumes by the sugar-ethanol producing industries. ALG, KGM and ALG/KGM blended (50:50) films were produced by casting and treated with calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) (ALG films) and a combination of Ca 2+ , alkali, and ethanol (KGM and ALG/KGM films). Vinasse addition tended to reduce transparency and water resistance of the films and had less effect on their mechanical properties. Crosslinking of ALG films resulted in enhanced mechanical properties and reduced moisture content, water solubility, swelling, water vapor permeability, and flexibility. KGM films were less impacted by crosslinking/deacetylation but showed improved water resistance while maintain a high degree of swelling (290% and 185% for KGM and KGM/VIN films respectively). Blended films exhibited characteristic properties of the two biopolymers and adequate compatibility indicated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and morphologies. Vinasse-added ALG/KGM films represent a novel nutrient-enriched, bio-based material for agricultural applications and could help to face the environmental challenges imposed by vinasse disposal., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. 5. Enhancing biogas production from vinasse in sugarcane biorefineries: Effects of urea and trace elements supplementation on process performance and stability

Abstract

In this study, the effects of nitrogen, phosphate and trace elements supplementation were investigated in a semi-continuously operated upflow anaerobic sludge blanket system to enhance process stability and biogas production from sugarcane vinasse. Phosphate in form of KH2PO4 induced volatile fatty acids accumulation possibly due to potassium inhibition of the methanogenesis. Although nitrogen in form of urea increased the reactor’s alkalinity, the process was overloaded with an organic loading rate of 6.1 g COD L−1 d−1 and a hydraulic retention time of 3.6 days. However, by supplementing urea and trace elements a stable operation even at an organic loading rate of 9.6 g COD L−1 d−1 and a hydraulic retention time of 2.5 days was possible, resulting in 79% higher methane production rate with a stable specific methane production of 239 mL g COD−1.
